Happy New Year from all of us at Larges Farms. WOW! 2026 is starting off with a bang. The cattle market is on fire right now. We sold the steer mates to this year’s bull offering on Western Video Auction for over $3200 for a nine-weight steer the first week in January. 4 days later the market was up another $10 cwt. With prices like this, having quality cattle with performance is worth more than ever. By using our SimAngus genetics we can put you in the driver seat to raise those top dollar feeder calves along with raising females that are efficient and have longevity. Demand for our bred heifers has been great. For 2 spring sales in a row Larges Farms has sold the highest priced bred heifers at Ogallala Livestock Market. This is an honor for us, considering the shear number of head they market annually. Progressive producers are finding the extra value of heterosis from using Larges Farms bulls and females.

New this year we did genomic testing on all the bulls and had the parentage verified. By doing this it gives you the producer more exact EPDs when making your bull selection. Also new this year we hired Matt Macfarlane with M3 Marketing to manage our sale. M3 Marketing specializes in marketing purebred cattle and has done it for over 25 years. Matt has been a wonderful asset in putting together this year’s sale.

We have been selling bulls for over 30 years now. Our cattle are not pampered and raised in a commercial setting. Most of the cows calve on cornstalks and never see a feed wagon. We have officially designated the first Wednesday of February each year as sale day! This year’s sale falls on February 4, 2026, and will be hosted at Larges Farms. Please join us for a hot meal beginning at 12:00 MOUNTAIN time. During the lunch hour, the bulls will be on display to the public for you to view in person.

by Western Plains Veterinary Service in Wallace late March to early April. After they have passed their exams, Larges Farms will deliver your purchase free of charge within 250 miles of the ranch. If you need assistance with delivery after that please let us know.

Pedigree Considerations We want to make everyone aware that we are new to registering cattle. When looking up bulls online you will see the breed code of “CS”. This means Commercial Simmental, simply meaning the cow is not papered. As we progress with the registering process in future years you will see this less. Thank you for being patient with us through this process.

Our Guarantee to You We have a first season breeding guarantee on every bull purchased here at Larges Farms. In the event that a bull is unable to complete a breeding season caused by an injury or death, please contact one of us immediately. If a bull is deemed unable to breed by a veterinarian, we will offer you a bull of equal value if one is available. If a bull is not available and you are able to salvage your bull at local market; we will issue you a sale credit for the difference between your purchase price and the amount received from your salvage check. We understand that accidents happen, even in the most cared for environments. That being said, Larges Farms cannot guarantee a bull in the case of poor feed management or neglect to the animal.

About Us The vision of this operation began with Marvin and Arlene Large in the late 1960’s. Marvin’s passion was cattle, good cattle. While raising their 5 children on the ranch, they experimented with many breeds of cattle and eventually settled on the Simmental breed. He loved the easy feeding and docility of these cattle as well as the ability to adapt to the environment.

Marvin found success in crossbreeding Simmental cattle with the Angus breed to maximize his profits finishing his own cattle in the feedlot. He was proud to market a finished product to the packers at 13 months of age and was able to gain added premium on those carcasses.

Today, the 400 head of SimAngus cattle operation is a result of the AI process that began here in the 70’s. The bull calves offered each year have been carefully selected based on performance, docility, and their outstanding phenotype. The mammas of these bulls have produced multiple offerings in our sales over the years, showing the longevity that has been bred into them.

In 1994 after graduating from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Animal Science, Jeremey Gittlein joined Larges Farms as Ranch manager.

Today Jeremey continues Marvins’s vision of maintaining quality cattle.

Raising and selling bulls is just one aspect of the operation, the ranch takes pride in custom feeding and their custom heifer development program.

Jeremey’s wife Amy began employment as account manager for the farm after the birth of their oldest son Regan in 1997. You will find her as well as Jeremey’s two oldest children, Regan and Brady, behind the scenes each day running daily operations.

One Final Note The bulls have been part of a complete vaccination program from birth to weaning. Consultant for our program is Western Plains Veterinary Services of Wallace, Nebraska. Contact Dr Erickson at 308-387-4325 if you have any questions about our protocols.

Suthers Feeds of Frankfurt, Kansas is our consulting nutritionist and has developed rations specifically for this set of bulls. Austin Vieselmeyer is our consultant and loves to talk all about the ins and outs of this development ration. We invite you to reach out to him for any of your nutritional needs.

And finally, new this year, all bulls have had a TSU sent in to the NeoGen lab for a GGP-100K panel. They have been parentally verified and have received genomically enhanced EPDs along with being trait tested. You can find all results listed under the bulls respected ASA registration number.

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

STAYABILITY (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cow herd at 6 years of age.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
