Welcome to the 13th Annual Next Step Cattle Company Bull Sale. We could not be more pleased with the quality of bulls we have for your appraisal on the third Saturday of November. We appreciate your support of the Next Step program, and please feel free to stop by and view the bulls anytime ahead of the sale.
Our group combines nearly 100 years of experience in the seedstock business. We have focused on cattle that thrive in the southeastern climate and maximize profit for cattlemen in the southeast. Many of the bulls come in a 6+ frame package and are bred to enhance weaning weight and provide ample calving ease. Likewise, the group has made a large effort in increasing the marbling and carcass quality genetics in our bulls. Ultimately, we bred our bulls to increase the marketability of your feeder calves.
Fruitful times in the cattle business has arrived for cow calf producers all across our great country. Producers are receiving record breaking prices for all classes of beef cattle. The demand for US quality beef and the low inventory of the US cowherd has been the driving forces behind the record prices. We get the question on how long prices will stay this strong. Most of the sophisticated price predictors say cattlemen will continue seeing strong feeder cattle prices into 2027. A much larger window than the 2014 and 2015 window of feeder cattle price spikes.
We hope you can join us the third Saturday in November. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate reaching out to any of our team members.
Sincerely,
Next Step Crew

Access to more and better information has always been key to making wise decisions. The evolution and improvement of genetic evaluation tools too has given us an ever-clearer picture of the true genetic makeup of cattle and thus a better view of the value proposition. RightMate, powered by Top Genomics LLC is taking the evaluation of genetics and genomics one giant step further. By combining speci c genomic information with the long-proven value of EPDs, this new advancement in technology improves our depth and precision when evaluating the actual ability to transmit value and pro t.
The 3 Accreditation Logos below are designed to simplify bull selection and improve buyer con dence by more accurately describing the genetics o ered and by reducing risk. What this means to you as a customer is a much greater assurance that you are getting both what you want and need from the genetics you purchase. What it means to your seedstock provider is access to RightMate technology that simply sets them apart from the rest of the industry.
ACCREDITED GENOMIC PLUS – For the majority of producers who simply need consistent and balanced genetic improvement, without genomic setbacks, G+ Accredited bulls should be on your list for premium purchase. These sires will absolutely move you forward for both cost reduction and income producing traits and substantially reduce risk when compared to all other evaluation programs. It’s simple, the right genes are in these bulls to help secure a pro table future and the they have great EPDs to match!
ACCREDITED CALVING EASE – Simply nd bulls with the ACE logo for third party Accredited, secure Calving Ease bulls. Though we have had tools in the past to assist in choosing heifer bulls, we’ve never had one nearly this e ective. The reduced risk that comes with this genomic certi cation will simply make your decisions easier and your heifer calving season more successful. Purchase special purpose ACE bulls with con dence. They will deliver consistent and predictable calving ease.
ACCREDITED TERMINAL MATE – Just like an ATM machine makes it simpler to access your cash, the ATM Logo highlights bulls accredited to generate extra cash income as soon as your next calf crop! These bulls are meant speci cally to use only on mature cows and for the purpose of adding performance, pay weight and end product value to market.
The bulls selling were selected from the top 50% of the 2023 and 2024 calf crops. The breeders have worked hard to combine the growth and maternal traits of the Simmental and Angus breeds in a moderate frame bull with superior carcass potential, while maintaining a breed average birth weight EPD. We have listed as much data as possible on each bull to assist you in selecting the one that will help you reach the goals you have set for your beef operation.
The bulls and cow herds are on the Pfizer Vaccination Program. All bulls have been tested and are negative for PI BVDV. All bulls are eligible for interstate shipment. Any bulls going to Texas or any other state that requires a PCR negative test for trichomoniasis on bulls under 18 months of age will be tested following the Sale and delivery will be arranged once test results are available. Time frame 10-14 days.
All bulls have had a complete BSE and have passed a semen test and are guaranteed to be breeders for a period of 180 days from sale date, if they have been given proper care. Any claim of a bull being a non-breeder must be in writing to Next Step Cattle Co. along with a veterinarian’s statement of the problem by June 5, 2025. If the bull is proven a non-breeder, Next Step Cattle Co. shall at the option of the buyer, replace the bull with another bull of equal value if available or grant the buyer credit on another bull.
Arrangements have been made for trucking to centralized unloading locations in Alabama and throughout the Southeast, at the least cost possible to the buyer. If you need assistance in getting bulls delivered, contact us prior to Sale Day and we will work with you on getting your bulls delivered as prompt and economical as possible. See page 4 for more trucking information.
The breeders of the bulls marketed in the Next Step Cattle Co. Bull Sale are retaining a ½ semen interest in each bull selling. The buyer will have full possession, full salvage value and ½ semen interest in the bull and will be able to market or dispose of the bull in any manner. The breeder will have the option in the future to collect the bull for in-herd use or for marketing semen at their expense and the buyers’ convenience. The buyer can participate in the marketing of the semen by sharing in the collection and marketing cost. It is very unlikely that any large amount of semen would be marketed from these bulls, but with the increased opportunities to collect data on cattle in the future, some of these bulls could prove to be valuable to the beef industry.
GGP stands for Neogen Geneseek Genomic Profiler which is a DNA genomic enhancement of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). GGP predictions verify performance, maternal, and carcass traits to increase accuracy and genetic prediction of the individual. Animals with GGP in the ASA/IGS Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation have an EPD accuracy equal to 15 to 35 progeny records for calving ease and performance EPDs and 6 to 8 progeny records for carcass EPDs. This advanced technology tool provides genetic prediction on yearling animals equal to years of progeny data.
Next Step Cattle Company was formed in early 2013 by a group of performance-oriented breeders that have been breeding, developing and marketing Simmental, SimAngus™ and Angus bulls for beef producers in the Southeast. The bulls selling in this sale represent over 200 years of dedicated efforts by this group of breeders. Bulls bred by each of the breeders below are designated on the second line of the information box for each bull. Their individual herd code or initial is listed to the right of the Herd box.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.
Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:
ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.
BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.
BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.
DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.
MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.
TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.
WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring
and
and yield. For more detailed information about EPDs and $indexes, visit: www.simmental.org
Expect the Full Scale sons to live up to their name. The cattle are big-time performers and will increase payweight and frame. His pedigree features multiple generations of Southeastern breeding and offers incredible hair shedding and docility.

BD:
Today’s industry pays big for heavy fat steers, but your pocketbook demands smaller cows. What to do?
The answer is clear, dependable data and the courage to bypass traditional straightbreeding.
Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts.a Meanwhile, packers pay $20 to $34 more for SimAngusTM and Simmental-sired steers than English-sired calves.b
Finally, raise efficient cows and high-performance calves. The proof is in the data – and the cash.
