Welcome...

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 9th Annual EXTRA EFFORT Fall Sale at the Fred and Eudell Smith Cattle Center in Clayton, NC. The auction will take place on Saturday, October 18th beginning at 12:00. We encourage you to join us at the ranch on Friday night for an evening filled with presale activities. The Kiddie Cattle Camp begins at 5:30 for all of our young cattle enthusiasts in the family. Starting at 6:30 is an educational program from Dr. Jamie Courter, from right here in Henderson, NC. After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a doctoral degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics, she spent five years working for Neogen Genomics and in 2023 she became the Beef Genetics Extension Specialist for the University of Missouri. Hear her speak about her passion to help beef producers better understand the uses and benefits of genomic technologies on their herds. We will also hear from Marty Ropp, founder and CEO of Allied Genetic Resources. Our partnership with Allied has played a pivotal role in our quest to breed EVERGREEN Cattle. Hear Marty speak about this relationship and how Allied helps beef producers all across the country.

The genetic progress on display in this year’s sale is the result of years of strategic selection, leading genetics, and advanced technologies like Embryo Transfers and RightChoice. This is what we refer to as STRATEGIC COMPOUNDING—incremental gains built on a series of many good decisions. This helps us to achieve our goal of producing EVERGREEN CATTLE: proven, climate-adapted genetics that add lasting value through balanced excellence in calving ease, maternal traits, growth, carcass quality, and phenotype, not sacrificing any one trait for another. One of our core values at this ranch is family, and that extends to our cattle customers. We are forever grateful for the opportunity to serve you and we feel as though when you purchase genetics from us, we become partners. Your herd’s genetics are a huge investment and we stand by every animal that we sell.

The EVERGREEN breeding philosophy would not be achievable without our commitment to embryo transfers. 56% of the bulls in this catalog are embryo calves, and we believe that this is one of the most consistently impressive and uniform calf-crop that we have ever produced, thanks largely to the large contemporary groups of several of our best flushes.

We sincerely thank you for your interest in FSCR Genetics and we look forward to seeing you on sale day.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” -Matthew 7:12

ACCOUNTABILITY - PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Our Ranch closely follows the Law of the Harvest.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” -Galatians 6:7

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” -Luke 12:48

PERSEVERANCE:

Fred Smith Company Ranch values the perseverance of the human spirit.

““…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with PERSEVERANCE the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on JESUS, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” -Hebrews 12:1-3

Veterans’ Discount

Thank you to our Veterans for preserving our way of life and our freedoms. We offer a $250 discount on the first bull to all who have served or are currently serving in the United States military.

FRED SMITH COMPANY RANCH BULL DEVELOPMENT FSC Ranch bulls are developed to adapt to our Southeastern environment by housing in pastures that are primarily Bermuda grass. They are developed on a high roughage ration consisting of ground grass hay, corn gluten, and no more than 0.5 of body weight of corn. We have developed this feeding program to not only allow us to maximize genetic potential, but to keep the customer in mind that purchases them. We want to sell bulls in the same shape we like to buy them in – ready to breed at 14 months of age and that will stay around a long time.

EVERGREEN BREEDING PHILOSOPHY

Breeding goals matter! If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there! The EVERGREEN Magnolia is our company logo -the EVERGREEN tree is green in all seasons of the year. The EVERGREEN breeding philosophy is simple, yet requires rigor to achieve. To produce cattle that work in all seasons of our industry we must be disciplined and focused to balance calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass traits to provide value to our commercial customers with the most predictable genetics available. At FSC Ranch we take a very long-term view and realize that it takes much longer to achieve excellence than many people think, but through “Extra Effort” we are confident we can produce the finest SimAngus™ genetics possible for our customers.

To achieve the EVERGREEN genomic system, we emphasize the traits that have the largest economic impact in our customers’ breeding program. For our customers in the cow-calf business the options are simple: Wean more calves and wean heavier calves. Our structured and balanced approach includes: cattle raised on a forage-based high fiber ration, DNA testing, and using all data possible to make our selection decisions.

We focus on 5 EPD traits and 2 index traits for the following reasons:

1. Calving Ease Direct EPD (CE) – It all begins with a live calf that does not require assistance and does not impose undue strain on the calf or dam.

2. Calving Ease Maternal EPD (CEM) – CEM is calving ease viewed as the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve unassisted. It has a positive genetic relationship with growth and mature size. That’s why we don’t just select for higher Calving Ease Direct.

3. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) – We believe most of our customers market their calves at weaning time where they are sold by the pound so we emphasize this growth trait.

4. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) – This highly heritable trait offers individual genetic growth potential for increased efficiency in the feedlot.

5. Marbling EPD (MARB)-Consumers are demanding more high-quality beef options and marbling matters and increases return to the cattleman.

6. All-Purpose Index (API) – In NC the average herd size is 41 cows. API is the most effective selection tool available for these producers to achieve profitability. It measures the expected performance of progeny of Sim genetic bulls used on the cowherd, with a portion of the daughters retained for breeding and remaining progeny being sold.

7. Terminal Index (TI) – This is a terminal index that measures the expected average performance of progeny of Sim genetic bulls used on a cowherd, with all offspring placed in the feedlot and sold grade and yield. This includes growth and carcass information only, since all progeny are marketed.

The goal at FSCR is to improve our customers profitability and sustainability in the cattle business. We believe this is best achieved by using sires that will produce seedstock bulls and heifers that rank in the top 30% for the 5 EPDs targeted above and rank in the top 10% for both API and TI indexes. When an animal attains this goal, we label it an “EVERGREEN BULL OR HEIFER.” Therefore, our customers can buy with confidence knowing that every breeding decision is made to produce “EVERGREEN CATTLE!”

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE RANCH

Please join us Friday, October 17 at 5:30 pm.

JAMIE T. COURTER, PH.D. Originally from Henderson, North Carolina, Jamie received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University. It was here that her passion for the beef industry began. Following graduation, she went on to obtain a master’s degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics from South Dakota State University. During her tenure there, she interacted with and learned from producers of all ages and backgrounds. Her thesis research was conducted at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, NE, working with leading geneticists to advance calculations of GE-EPDs. This knowledge and experience led to her decision to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a doctoral degree, where she worked alongside Drs. Ron Lewis, Matthew Spangler, and Temple Grandin to better quantify docility for genetic evaluations.

Following graduation, Jamie spent the first five years of her career as a Product Manager and Technical Services Manager at Neogen Genomics. While different titles, both positions had the same goal: to help beef producers better understand the use case and benefits of genomic technology. This encompassed everything from interpreting EPDs to adoption of commercial genetic testing. While there, she gained invaluable knowledge of the global cattle industry, its needs, and pinch points as it pertains to technology adoption. All information and experience that will pose useful in her new role as State Beef Genetics Extension Specialist at the University of Missouri, where she started just Sept. 1st of 2023.

MARTY ROPP is founder and executive officer of Allied Genetic Resources, All Beef, LLC and the founder of Allied Feeding Partners, LLC. Originally from Normal, Illinois, the current home office of Allied, Marty grew up in the swine seedstock business but left Illinois in 1982 to pursue his B.S. degree from Kansas State University which was followed by an M.S. degree from University of Missouri. Marty founded the Allied Genetic Resources business in June of 2010. With more than 100 independent seedstock producer owners specializing in the genetic improvement, production and marketing of SimAngus™, Simmental as well as Red Angus, Angus, Gelbvieh Balancer and now Shorthorn commercial bulls, Allied is one of the largest coordinated seedstock service businesses in the US with owners marketing more than 10,000 bulls annually. All Beef, LLC and Allied Feeding Partners, LLC were added to the Allied family in 2017 and 2018 to aid in achieving Allied’s original mission. All programs and initiatives from the Allied family of businesses are built to promote the success of the commercial beef business, primarily using tools and programs to promote genetic improvement, backed by customer service. The latest Allied priority programming centers around Seedstock and Commercial industry implementation of RightMate and RightChoice technologies created by Dr. Mahdi Saatchi at Top Genomics, LLC.

Join us Friday night to hear about the RightMate technology along other news regarding the beef business from Marty Ropp.

You’re invited! Bring the whole family out to the Ranch Friday night for an evening of hands-on fun and learning at KIDDIE CATTLE CAMP! This special event is designed to give kids an exciting, safe, and educational glimpse into ranch life while creating memories the whole family will cherish.

The fun begins at 5:30 pM, with plenty of activities to keep kids of all ages entertained. Explore the ranch and enjoy a variety of attractions, including: an upclose livestock display where kids can meet a calf, face painting, a bounce house, hayrides, and so much more! By the Numbers, Measurable Differences...

We believe these bulls are an excellent example of the progress we are making to produce EVERGREEN bulls. We hope that you will find a bull that meets your needs. If we can help in any way, please let us know.

On behalf of the TEAM at FSC Ranch, we can assure you that we are seeking to be the best genetic seedstock provider for our customers by doing everything just a little bit better by putting forth a “little extra effort”. We agree with Coach Vince Lombardi: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

Breeding EVERGREEN Bulls - Status Report

In recent years, we’ve invested heavily in our Embryo Transfer program, using it to combine top male and female genetics and move closer to our goal of producing EVERGREEN CATTLE – uniform, consistent, and balanced bulls. This technology allows us to multiply our most elite cow families, ensuring that the best genetics don’t just influence one or two calves a year, but entire groups of sale bulls that are stamped with the same proven quality alongside the FSC Brand.

In this year’s sale, 61 out of 108 bulls (56%) are ET calves, including full brothers from flushes to Compounder (9), Copperhead (9), Essential (7), Freedom (15), Honor (7), YON Flagship (13), and Hometown Hero (1). Having this many full and half-brothers available in one offering provides customers with an opportunity that is both unique and valuable: the ability to select from multiple sons of a proven mating, giving confidence that the genetics will transmit consistently in their own herds.

Embryo transfer work not only greatly accelerates our genetic progression, but it also produces a much more uniform calf crop. These ET full brothers are impressively similar to each other phenotypically, and they carry that same balance and predictability in their EPD profiles. We have been thoroughly impressed by the consistency offered here—from birth weight to growth, from structure to carcass merit—and believe our customers will see the same results once these bulls go to work.

Beyond this sale, the impact of embryo transfer is shaping the long-term direction of our cow herd. By concentrating superior genetics, we are strengthening the maternal base of our program while also elevating performance and carcass traits. Each flush represents not only a step forward for us, but also for our customers who can confidently invest in bulls that are proven to transmit value year after year. The results of this work are evident in every pen of bulls, and we’re excited to share the progress with you.

Going the EXTRA effort

At FSCR we test all our progeny to provide the most up-to-date genetic information on all our sale animals. All progeny sale animals are both homozygous polled and homozygous black tested. Every bull has received a Breeding Soundness Exam.

Below is the herd health protocol followed at Fred Smith Company Ranch, as recommended by Dr. Harrison Dudley, DVM. All animals are tested and free of anaplasmosis, leukosis, Johne’s, BVD-PI, tuberculosis and brucellosis.

When producing bulls with this much economic value, it only makes sense to put forth the extra effort with a first class herd health protocol.

AGE Advantaged

FSC RANCH - North Carolina’s Largest Source for Age-Advantaged Bulls

There are several important and logical reasons why commercial customers should consider purchasing bulls with a few more months of age and development on their side. Some of the benefits are obvious, but some others we don’t always consider.

• Older bulls have the ability to service more females in a shorter period of time than yearling bulls. Age-advantaged, 18-20 month old bulls should be capable of safely settling at least 5-10 more females in their first breeding season with minimal risk over a 45 day breeding period due to greater fitness, superior average semen production and maturity.

• Over-fat bulls are an issue in this industry. A high quality, slower paced development program is possible when producing older bulls for sale. Age-advantaged bulls can simply be developed more slowly and still reach target weights and marketable condition with ease. Too often bulls developed to be sold as yearlings are subjected to extra push nutritionally in order to make those same thresholds. When done improperly, the results can be reduced longevity and lifetime service because of damage to feet, soft skeletal tissues and in extreme cases even internal organs associated with excess or faulty nutrition and exaggerated growth rate.

• Certainly, older bulls lose less weight and strength during their first breeding seasons. With that in mind the risk of your bull taking a week off or quitting the process of breeding cows completely is reduced. This is especially true in the more challenging breeding environments of the southern US.

• More of the guess work is taken out when purchasing older bulls. Strengths and flaws can both be more evident to buyers with an extra 6 months of development. For example, by that age foot and leg or disposition issues will be more evident and a higher percentage of potential problem bulls should have been identified and removed from the offering.

• Sorting older bulls does not give license to buy poorer genetics just because they have more age. It is important to make sure the age-advantaged bulls you are evaluating are not just the leftovers after the more valuable bulls were marketed as yearlings and low genetic value bulls should never be an option, regardless of age.

Many producers will always favor purchasing high value, younger bulls because of the potential of an extra season of use later in life and often sellers prefer the simplicity and lower cost of producing them. Correctly developed older bulls however, simply have a greater probability of breeding success in the first season than when they were younger. Give them a try for reduced risk.

HETEROSIS

Years of research and industry proofs stand unchallenged. Crossbred calves simply weigh more and crossbred commercial cows are absolutely more productive and profitable than straightbred commercial cows. End of story! In fact, the economic advantages are so large, one could argue that anyone discouraging commercial herds from using planned crossbreeding is just not interested in their profits or sustainability.

Historically, the promotion of crossbreeding has focused on the simple direct effects of individual heterosis. This is because those improvements are immediate, easy to see and impressive, often resulting in increased weaning weights of 4 to 5%. That translates in a 15 to 35 more pounds of calf weaned next year compared to this year, just with your first cross on straightbred cows. Far greater economic impacts of crossbreeding however are realized in the added profit produced by crossbred commercial cowherds designed with a plan for profit. “Plan” is the key. Just like in all facets of the commercial cow calf business, poor decisions in crossbreeding programs for breed, source or individuals are not acceptable, especially today with better information available and more value at stake.

So, how much more valuable is a crossbred commercial female vs. one that is not? Research repeatedly shows a lifetime production increase for crossbred females of between 20 to 25% because of greater fertility, longevity and improved maternal environment. Hundreds of publications have demonstrated this advantage dating back to the 70’s and there is literally no research that dispute these results. Simply put, if an average straight-bred female produces six, 500 pound calves in her life, the result is about 3000 lbs. of gross production. In comparison, based on years of data and research, her crossbred counterpart will deliver between 3600 and 3750 pounds of calf weaned because on the average she produces an extra calf in her lifetime and each calf is heavier. Depending on price, that added performance generates somewhere at or above $1000 more total dollars of value or more than $100 per year of added income. The benefit of needing to retain 10-15% less replacement heifers each year and calve substantially fewer 2-year-olds each season is a huge bonus as well.

I realize that the previous example is based on maximum heterosis which is achievable through advanced management or systems approaches, but can be challenging to maintain for some operations. For greatest simplicity and practicality, consider composited seedstock with the breeds and percentages that fit your production and marketing situation. They come with retained heterosis and profit enhancement bred in. Even at 50-75% of the maximum possible heterosis, the increased profit composites provide is difficult to match by any other enterprise change and the long-term improved uniformity of both calf crop and cow herd just makes everything you do easier.
