BULLS in the

Ballroom

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity has been initiated by Gelbvieh breeders and supporters to increase participation in the National Gelbvieh Show, the National Gelbvieh Sale, the National Gelbvieh Convention and to identify the most useful young sires in the Gelbvieh breed. The sponsor of the annual Futurity will be the Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity, Inc., a non-profit organization, not associated with the American Gelbvieh Association. The Futurity winners will be selected by scored balloting of the participating breeders members. Ballots must have a different bull in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions. Ballots must include all three positions. The consignor of the Futurity winner shall receive approximately 80% of the net Futurity funds. Two runners-up will be identified to receive approximately 10% respectively. The Futurity winner will be sold as Lot 1 in the National Gelbvieh Sale. The net sale proceeds of the winning bull will be given to one breeder member who will be selected by a random drawing. Each Futurity breeder member will receive 20 (twenty) units of semen from the winning bull. The initial voting will be held at the National Western Stadium Arena on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 10:00 am. The top 3 vote winning bulls will be honored Saturday night January 7, 2012 at 6:30 pm in the Red Lion Hotel with “Bulls in the Ballroom VII” Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity. The Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity winner and runners-up will be announced at “Bulls in the Ballroom”. The general public is welcome. The 2012 Futurity is limited to 55 breeder memberships. The 55th breeder membership will be sold at public auction before the drawing for the sale proceeds in the ballroom.

RWG Double-XL 0541 is a high performance bull, with an amazing birth to yearling actual and EPD spread. With a high end maternal based pedigree. RWG Double-XL 0541 was the #1 bull at yearling with a ratio of 123, a great son from the record breaking sire RWG Traction 7412 who was the 2010 NWSS Res. Sr. Champion Bull, who’s first 32 progeny have recorded a 92 BW ratio, 102 WW ratio and 103 YW ratio. RWG Traction 7412 has quickly become one of the most impressive and talked about young proven sires in Canada, with progeny consistency and quality second to none. RWG Double-XL 0541 will follow in his sires footsteps while combining the power of his Dam VG Valley Miss 20L. A direct daughter from the foundation female VG Valley Miss 23J who has had a huge influence on our program. RWG Double-XL 0541 combines all of the top producing females in our program. RWG Double-XL 0541 is a great young bull that uniquely offers what we are all looking for, proven out-cross pedigree, EPD strength with real world performance, balanced set of igenity values, while improving phenotype, with a great disposition. You are encouraged to check out www.royalwesterngelbvieh.com for more info and pedigree pictures. Homozygous polled, EPD strength, breed changing, curve bender!

After watching from the sidelines for 14 years, I am excited to finally have an opportunity to participate in the purebred Futurity. Thus, it is with pleasure that we bring Masterlock to Denver this year. I think you will find Masterlock is an outcross to most USA genetics (particularly on the dam side). When you evaluate his depth of rib (especially his fore rib), his depth of flank, his levelness and width of top, his wide based skeletal structure and his overall breed character then you too may determine that he can make a solid contribution to the breed. If EPDs are your criteria for genetic selection then you will be most appreciative of his CED and BW numbers. The fact that his EPDs are primarily Canadian generated may account for his growth numbers but I believe most forward thinking Futurity Members will alloow him to produce his own performance numbers in the future. Point of interest: Scott Sevverrtson’s top selling bull at $12,500 in 2009 was a FULL brother to Masterlock!! All of the bulls in this Futurity anticipate being the breed’s “great one” ---Masterlock certainly may be just that!

Upgrade 425X is one of those phenomenal young bulls that has been turning heads since birth. This young herd sire prospect offers power and performance with a tremendous set of EPD’s. Homozygous polled and double black with a 82 lb BW and 759 lb WW with a ratio of 110. His sire is our senior herd sire, Post Rock Granite 200P2 (owned with our good friends at J & K Gelbvieh) who is the #1 bull in the Gelbvieh breed for gestation length and the #2 bull in the Gelbvieh for registrations this year. His dam is about as good as you can make them, with a perfect udder and phenomenal phenotype. We purchased her from Knoll Crest Farms as a bred heifer and she has never let us down, as this year she has been honored as a Dam of Merit. Mr James Bennett was here just after she had calved and he just said (WOW-WHAT A COW!). We think upgrade can do just what his name says, upgrade most any herd. He is truly right for the times and has the eye appeal, genetic strength and great disposition to be a breed leader. We look forward to seeing you in Denver and would appreciate you consideration in the futurity selection.

Last year sensation was the “Whitney” female. She sold for $20K and was the National Champion female. Everyone wanted a piece of her. Three years ago, the bull on the hill most talked about was “Buddy Boy”. So why not get the both of best worlds with JDPD Chain Link 251Y? He takes the genetics from the top and bottom side of his pedigree to make a powerful package. This young bull is power, power, power with a touch of class. He is extremely big boned, big middle, big footed, big hipped and big butted. If you want to add meat, middle and shape to your calves, this is the bull. He wraps all this power into a super classy design. He is beautiful necked and smooth fronted, extremely long bodied with a softness to his walk that will be unmatched. He has continued his parents winning ways by being selected Grand Champion at the Tulsa State Fair, and most recently Reserve Grand Champion at the NAILE in Louisville. Not only is he nice to look at, but his EPD’s and Igentiy numbers are just as attractive. The spread between his birth weight and yearling weight is where you will make your money. Consider this young bull for one of your next A.I. sires, but remember the only way to get him is to VOTE for him!

Bar GT Justified is an extremely thick, powerful, Homozygous polled red bull. He expresses his muscle, rib shape and depth in an eye appealing package. Bar GT Justified moves out on a wide base with structural correctness. His pedigree is from the best at Jumping Cow. This young Herd Sire is out of “CAP” (Carolina Power x 84Y) and 548U (Collateral x 905K7). This is a nice combination of old and new genetics.

EGL Stacker Y010 is a second generation product of our Residual Feed Intake testing. His sire Northern Wind has been the undisputed breed leader, among 55 sires progeny tested for RFI, recording an average ratio of 103.5. His dam was selected for our donor program after she went through the RFI testing herself with a -2.02 RFI score for a 116 ratio. Stacker’s final test result showed a 102 ratio for RFI. Stacker has the big, square hip that Eagle Pass cattle have been known for. His carcass merit is off the charts with a $32 Grid Merit and large REA. Northern Wind progeny have excelled in REA as his 2011 sale bulls averaged over 16 sq. in. His dam is a long made, angular, very maternal looking female with a beautiful udder. Stacker should test homo black and homo polled. You can view him in the “Yards” as he will be the anchor bull in our pen of three.

Tucson is a very thick, free-wheeling bull that is attractive to look at, plus he was the #1 bull among 135 contemporaries from four breeds in our recent feed efficiency test. His RFI score of -2.74 was good for a 114.3 ratio. This bull has what it takes to be a breed influencer. Appreciate his mass, his bone, his big foot and ease of movement, but then study the numbers. We emphasize feed efficiency because it accounts for 60% of our customers production costs, but we do not single trait select for it. He will sire moderate framed, scale busting calves that carry a load of maternal merit. His sire JBOB “Jr” has enough progeny tests on our RFI system to call him a proven predictor of feed efficiency with a 103 average ratio for RFI. His dam, Phoenix is the last in the line of great Phoebe females. She is very similar in kind to her two National Champion siblings and passes on the length of hip and width of rump that the Phoebe progeny are known for. Tucson will undoubtedly be one of the heaviest muscled bulls in the futurity and he is homo polled by birth. The time to embrace feed efficiency has arrived.

Trademark comes from an ET mating of Post Rock Silver 233U1’s dam and one of the most heavily muscled interesting designed outcross black bulls we’ve come across in recent years that is owned by Marshall Cattle Co. The result is a black homozygous polled herd sire that’s tremendously heavily muscled and posted our top weaning weight of over 850 pounds when raised on a Balancer recip without creep on native pasture with the rest of our spring calves. Trademark offers a lot to those seeking true outcross genetics that are performance proven from a strong maternal genetic pool.

Prairie Hills Gelbvieh is proud to offer PHG Stand and Deliver Y08 as our entry in this years Futurity. Stand And Deliver has been a standout from the time he was born and is a great example of performance with style. Stand And Deliver is tremendously long sided, while still being clean through his neck and shoulder and straight and wide over his top. This guy pushed down the scales with an impressive 797 pound weaning weight without an ounce of creep feed. In addition, he is an outcross to nearly every red purebred pedigree in the country. His sire - Payday - was purchased from Davidsons in 2010 because of his impressive depth of chest and capacity. His first calves are making quite the first impression in our herd, being the heaviest group at weaning and continuing to impress as they go into the feedlot. Stand And Deliver’s dam is a daughter of one of our most prolific females - VVGR Miss 356K - herself a division winner at Junior Nationals. 356K has produced calves that have sold throughout the midwest, including a daughter who sold in the National Sale to M Heart D Gelbvieh of Montana. Stand And Deliver has already tasted success in the show ring, being named Champion Gelbvieh Bull at North Dakota’s largest Gelbvieh show. If you’re looking for a homozygous polled, red, outcross bull that offers a combination of length of body, balanced EPD’s, balanced DNA, and rugged good looks - we think we have your match in PHG Stand And Deliver Y08.

Every Gelbvieh Breeder in America is looking for their next Purebred herdsire and Black Sensation 271Y really rings the quality bell. The genetic combination of HYEK Black Impact with our donor female TAU Ms. Sleepy 920J gave us one of the best Homozygous Black Purebreds to come out of our operation. Black Sensation is a really complete bull that puts it all together. He is very attractive from the profile as he is extended about his front, long spined while being level and square from hooks to pins. On that same token when you get behind him he doesn’t disappoint. He is super stout and expressively muscled, and to top it all off he is extremely sound. 271Y is good in his angles and takes a long and fluent stride when put in motion. All of this combined with a consistent genetic profile makes me confident that Black Sensation will offer longevity to any Gelbvieh Herd. In the end, 271Y is the Front Pasture Kind and we project him to be a difference maker in the Gelbvieh breed for years to come.

All great breeding bulls feature incredible cow families and this black homozygous polled purebred Pop A Top son definitely sports one of the all-time great cow families in the breed. JRI Pop A Top 254Y86’s dam has already been honored three times as a Dam of Merit female and her six calves to date have only averaged 85 pounds at birth with a ripping 700 pound 205 day weight growth spread with no creep. Super mom, 254M76’s first four calves were beautiful replacement daughters with all four featuring 102 and 102 plus weaning ratios on their calves along with a $4242 average on sons. If you trace this powerful Judd Ranch cow family, JRI Pop A Top 254Y86’s great grandam, JRI 254E52 and great grandam, JRI 254C4 were both honored 5 times as Dam of Merit and 5 times as Dam of Distinction.
