Preview Sale Bulls The bulls are being fed at home on the ranch. Come and see the bulls, if you need directions to the ranch give us a call. On Wednesday, April 8th the bulls will be at Lewistown Livestock Auction for preview prior to the sale.

Breeder Guarantee All bulls are semen tested prior to sale day. Brevig Charolais will guarantee the bulls for the first breeding season. If for some reason a bull is proven to be an unsound breeder from the sale date until September 1, 2015, we will pay, if it is reasonable, to return the bull to sound breeding ability, (not to include health conditions due to lack of feed or care).

If it is unreasonable to treat the bull, Brevig Charolais will decide at that time to either replace the bull, give credit in future sales or refund your money. All claims will require a veterinarian’s examination. A bull’s inability to naturally service cows must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and reported immediately to Brevig Charolais. Brevig Charolais Ranch’s veterinarian must evaluate all claims and the diagnosis on a bull. The bull must have salvage value at a sale yard. Salvage value of the bull belongs to Brevig Charolais Ranch.

We do not insure for mortality. If you want mortality insurance, a company representative will be available.

Brevig Charolais Ranch will share 50% of the cost of that insurance. Guarantees apply to cattle purchased on sale day.

Disposition Guarantee

Free delivery within the State of Montana. Bulls going out of the state will be delivered at cost to central locations. $50 cash back on each and every bull hauled sale day from the sale facility.

Bulls are guaranteed for disposition. If you don’t like the disposition, you do not own him. The bulls must be picked up on sale day by the buyer or delivered by Brevig Charolais Ranch. Bulls delivered on third party transportation will not qualify. If you don’t like the disposition of a bull, Brevig Charolais will replace the bull or give credit in a future sale.

Supplement information will be available on our website www.brevigcharolais.com, as well as sale day. They will include sale day weight, ADG from gain test weight to sale weight, scrotal circumference and ultrasound information.

Our ultrasound tech is Sonja Gregory, Bar D Livestock Services.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or check payable at the sale facility unless credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

Disputes: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters is final.

Retained Interest Brevig Charolais is retaining 1/3 semen revenue-sharing interest in each individual in the sale.

What is the story behind Red Charolais cattle?

Red Charolais or red factor Charolais, as they are often called, are Charolais cattle that have been bred to be dilution gene free. Over the years breeders have taken Charolais cattle that expressed more reddish tint and continued to breed them until they have produced dilution gene free Charolais thus the red or red factor Charolais. Red factor Charolais are heavily used in Canada and are beginning to make their appearance in the United States. In the bull/dam’s pedigree red factor or red genetics is noted by a “Q” in their registration number. The following is a more complete explanation of the color of cattle.

“There are basically three different colors in cattle. Those being black, red, and brownish red to reddish black.” Charolais cattle would be red if they did not have the dilution gene, some call it a masking gene. This concept is better explained in an article by Milton W. Orr, where he writes, “A homozygous (alike) pair of dilution genes can dilute the solid colored animal to almost white or cream colored. Most solid white or cream colored cattle are genetically red or black but are homozygous (both genes the same) for the dilution genes that dilute the pigmentation to white or cream color.” An animal which is heterozygous for the dilution gene (one gene for dilution and the other for non-dilution) can influence the intensity of red pigmentation in red cattle and black pigmentation in black cattle. The offspring of a black animal bred to a white animal will most likely produce gray offspring. Likewise, red cattle mated to animals whose pigment is diluted can produce light yellow to rust colored offspring. Charolais are homozygous for the dilution gene as evidenced by their white color.

Red Charolais have been extensively used in Canada. The push for red factor Charolais is to have the tremendous feeder abilities of the Charolais genetics, but when used on Angus mother cows, the calves will be either red or black depending whether the Angus cow has a recessive red gene. we are seeing more interest in the uS for Red Charolais. Redzone has been tested and he is not only a Leptin T/T bull, but he is also dilutor gene free, which makes him homozygous Red. Bros Bronko (Bob as we call him) is a buff colored bull.we liked the look and performance we saw from his sire ACC I AM LEdGEnd 914w and with Bob being a red factor bull it was a perfect fit to bring him home. The calves from Bob are stout and thick. In our program he has been easy calving. we like the calves and look for good things from his off-springs. one of the new dnA test looks at leptin as a possible link to improving marbling. Leptin is a product of fat cells. The leptin protein is directly related to appetite, energy utilization and marbling in beef cattle. The gene in cattle is Leptin-cc, Leptin-tc or Leptin-tt. Cattle with a homozygous (both alleles are the same) L-tt tend to have higher marbling scores and gain faster in the feedlot. Cattle with L-cc cattle tend to have a higher percentage of lean meat. The t allele frequency and L-tt proportion among breeds reinforces the traditional phenotypic differences between breeds, with the British breeds tending to marble and Continental breeds tending to be lean. The final 60 days on feed are the most critical for carcass quality. If you feed cattle long enough, nearly all of them will grade but it will not be cost-effective. what’s more, in an average group, animals that look identical when they are sorted will finish differently. Some of this difference is because of different leptin genotypes. when calves are homozygous L-tt they continue to stay in a hunger mode eating and storing fat, including intramuscular fat (marbling). These cattle finish sooner and have more marbling.
