Meadow Acres Polled Herefords Complete Dispersal

At the turn of the nineteenth century, land was being homesteaded by immigrants from Eastern Europe, each getting their one hundred and sixty acre allotment with the promise to break a portion of arable ground each year and turn it into production. The land fifty miles north of the American border, then the North-West Territories, was being settled by the early 1890’s, nearly fifteen years before Saskatchewan was incorporated into the Dominion of Canada. In 1909, the railway arrived; opening accessibility to the region and in 1910 the village of Lampman was founded. It was named after Archibald Lampman, a Confederation poet. This sleepy little settlement, nestled in a farming region, grew to the status of a town on June 1, 1963. The discovery of the Bakken formation changed the sleepy little town into a hive of activity, as the oil industry has changed the face of the region.

In the latter 1850’s, a flood of Europeans migrated to Ontario.

Many of the Alsace German Catholic settlers located in southern Bruce county, near the present day hamlet of Formosa, establishing churches and schools, along with a brewery. (Over the years ownership and names changed, but some of us will recognize the “Formosa Springs” label.) In this group of new Canadians was Andrew Fornwald, born in 1807, and along with his wife Theresa raised eight children, five sons and three daughters. Their fourth son, Henry, born in 1849, married Sophia Illerbrun and raised ten children; seven daughters and three sons. In 1904, Henry and Sophia along with their brood of ten, moved west and homesteaded in the Lampman area.

Their youngest son, Alphonse was born in 1900. He grew up on the family farm and attended Sinclair school. In 1926, he married Margaret Wanner of Crosby, North Dakota who had emigrated from Russia. The couple raised thirteen children; seven sons and six daughters. In their early years, the young couple struggled while establishing their farm; a tornado in 1931 demolished the barn and sheds and like their neighbours, they had to live through the “dirty thirties.” As the family grew, Meadow Acres Farms Dispersal - 1 Alphonse added more land to their base and improved his

machinery. In 1946, he purchased a one-way disc, a tractor and a two-ton truck; the beginning of mechanized farming.

The fourth child of Alphonse and Margaret was Fred Fornwald born in 1930. Fred married Evelyn Fieber in 1954 and began farming, as well as raising seven children; six boys, Leslie, Danny, Brian, Terry, Calvin, Blair and one daughter, SherryLynn. In their early years, Fred and Evelyn operated a mixed farm which consisted of grain, beef and dairy. As the boys began to grow up and expressed interest in farming, the mixed farm became mainly a dairy with some beef cows. Fred and the boys constructed a new dairy barn with a one hundred and fifty cow capacity and in 1974; the farm was turned into a limited company, Fred Fornwald & Sons Farms Limited.

The dairy, a registered Holstein herd, operated under the trade name of Lampada Holsteins.

The program was highly successful and exhibited throughout Canada and the United States. In 2001, Lampada Holsteins were awarded the Master Breeders Shield by the Canadian Holstein Association.

Lampada Holsteins have won All-Western breeders herd on numerous occasions, have had many All-Western winners and a host of nominees. Lampada Star Dust Rose was awarded All-American Three Year old and Reserve All- Canadian in the same year. The 2007 All-Canadian Senior Two Year Old was won by Benner Leduc Jo Lyn, owned by Lampada. Lampada Holsteins rapidly rose and became a household name in dairy circles.

Blair Fornwald the youngest son of Fred and Evelyn has lived his entire life on the farm maintaining the tradition of prior generations. Aside from getting an education and farming, he loved hockey and played as a goalie for Lampman as a kid and later with the senior team. Blair met Laurel Hildebrandt in Estevan, and they married in the spring of 1983.

Laurel was born in Regina, but at the age of three her family moved to Vancouver where she grew up as a city girl, blissfully unaware of farm life, except for stories told to her by her mother, about life on a farm just outside of Lampman. Laurel had no idea of what went into raising cattle...she just knew that meat was purchased at the grocery store and found its way onto her dinner plate. Lampman each summer and after graduation, came to live with her grand-mother in Estevan; by fall she decided to get a job and stay for a while‌she never left, married Blair and together raised three children.

The oldest, Dustin, born in 1983, loved farming from the start and was Blair’s shadow. He was very active in sports; ball in the summer months and hockey in the winter.

He competed at provincial level in both sports and was part of the team that won the provincials in hockey during his last year of minor hockey. At the Sask. Proud Sale in December of 2005 he met Kirsten Spence, a Hereford girl from Outlook, Saskatchewan and they married in July, 2008. They have two beautiful daughters: Brenna and Britt, making seven generations of the Fornwald family in Canada. Dustin and Kirsten purchased and reside on the original Henry Fornwald homestead.

Their daughter, Ashton was born in 1986.

Independent and stubborn (like her father), she left home right after graduation.

She attended the University/College of the Frazer Valley, Abbottsford, British Columbia for two years, and then relocated to Halbrite, Saskatchewan where she currently is a lead operator for Gibson Custom Treating. She married Michael Adderley and has a daughter Peyton. Like her older brother, Ashton was very sports minded playing both ball and hockey. She competed on a provincial level in both sports losing in a provincial hockey final on a very controversial call.

The youngest, Darnell was born in 1989, liked cattle, but thought sitting on a tractor was boring.

He attended Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta for two years, and then accepted a job as a herd health manager at a feedlot in southern Alberta. There, he met Morgan Luhoff and they were married in April 2012. The couple lives in Coaldale, Alberta and Darnell works on a dairy operation. Sports is in the family blood, as Darnell competed in ball, hockey and in Tae Kwon Do as far afield as Quebec.

No doubt Tony Lischka’s advice was solid and helpful in the building stages, but Blair’s dairy background was the key in building a great herd of Polled Hereford breeding cattle.

The dairy influence taught milk, production was measured in pounds and fertility. The cow herd was totally based on the propagation of strong cow families...the Adas, Tammys, Traceys, Sarahs, Geminis and so on. They have developed a cow herd coming into its prime, complete with quality and the documentation to go with them.

MA HR Tracey 68S 9X First Lady Classic Hereford Champion Agribition 2011 Sadly, one of Blair’s brothers, Brian, was taken by Leukemia at the age of 19. Blair inherited Brian’s prized car...a 1973 Barracuda. It was a beautiful automobile that he kept in a garage during the winter and only drove it in summer.

In 1990, Blair and Laurel decided that they wanted to start a purebred Hereford herd of their own. Although the car was very meaningful to Blair and hard to part with, he made the difficult decision to sell the Barracuda and purchased ten cow-calf pairs... this was the start of the couples, Meadow Acres Polled Herefords, twenty-three years ago...the tattoo letter was “A.” On acquiring purebred Polled Hereford cattle, one of the most influential and helpful breeders in the area was Tony Lischka who owned ANL Polled Herefords. Since Tony was also in dairy, the goals and knowledge were similar. Tony was only seven miles south of Blair’s and was always available to answer Blair’s questions. On one occasion, Blair was not able to attend a sale, so Laurel travelled with Tony, who helped her bid on a cow. She was very nervous...but Blair approved her choice and all was well.

All three of the children started in 4-H dairy at a young age. The Soo-Moo 4-H Dairy Club consisted mostly of cousins as Blair’s brother’s children were all in it as well.

But soon they joined the Browning 4-H Beef Club as the kids realized there was money in selling steers. As they learned about beef cattle...feeding, grooming, showing...

Laurel learned along with them and soon the city girl became a country girl....it was a family event. In 1997, Dustin’s steer was named Grand Champion at the Estevan Regional 4-H Show.

With some show ring experience and the children of age, they decided they were ready to exhibit at Agribition and Ag-Ex in Brandon, but quickly realized they had a lot more to learn.

Each year the herd improved and they started moving up in placing. The kids won Champion Hereford in the Junior Beef

Extreme at Agribition and exhibited Supreme Champion over all breeds at Ag-Ex in Brandon; as well they exhibited two Canadian All-Star heifers. Meadow Acres have had great success each year at the annual South East Field Day (one year winning Champion in all categories). The children were members of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association and were very successful at the Bonanza Shows. In 2010 Meadow Acres won the best group of five bulls at the Regina Bull Sale.

burning. We moved to town for a few months while our new house was being built. It was difficult for us, and we were all happy to be back on the farm and in a brand new house. It is a blessing to live in a community of such caring people. While we were saddened to lose our home and possessions, it was just stuff; we were all alive and healthy.”

In the fall of 2008, Blair and Laurel split away from Fred Fornwald & Sons Farms Ltd. and formed Meadow Acres Farms Ltd. Blair and Laurel, along with Dustin and Kirsten, currently farm 3500 acres of cash crops with a total land base of 7000 acres and calve two hundred plus females. The children and grand children each own some cattle and Blair and Laurel are grateful that their son will maintain a seven generation tradition of living off of the soil.

The first calves we purchased were Letter ‘A’’s and here we are around the alphabet and back to Letter ‘A’. It seems like we’ve been in the Hereford breed forever, but really it’s only been a blink of an eye. We’ve built up our herd from 10 cow/calf pairs to what you see on offer here. It’s been hard work, but also rewarding to see the improvements and the growth of the herd. We have seen many different trends in the industry over the last 20 years, but the one thing that has remained consistent is the people. We have made so many great friendships and are thankful for all the Hereford Breed has done for us. These cattle will be leaving but the friendships will stay forever!

The herd is in it’s absolute prime, the cows are working hard and in great shape and the calves on these cows, mainly sired by TH 89T 743 Untapped 425X, are the best we have ever raised. With most of the females in the sale carrying this same service there is a world of opportunity for their new owners! everything sells in this sale, including embryos, our interest in TH 89T 743 Untapped 425X and semen inventory, nothing is being held back. 2013 bull calves taken at the time of the sale will sell with no further guarantee. The yearling bulls and herd bulls will sell with a current semen test.

October 18th, 2013 will add another page into Hereford history as one of the top cow herds in our country will go under the gavel. Although it will come with a hint of sadness, it will be an opportunity day for the entire livestock industry.

The Meadow Acres operation is truly a family affair dedicated to agriculture. Now a fourth generation establishment, it was founded by Fred Fornwald operating under the herd name “Lampada.” Although he raised a few Herefords, the core of the operation was registered Holsteins. This dairy background in which Blair grew up, was of great importance as they established the beef herd.

As in the dairy industry, volume, fertility and milk production are critical for success; the Fornwalds applied those standards to their Hereford program. “This cow herd is my kind!” Heavy, deep bodied cows with tons of milk and calving for the most part, in a two month period. As you read through this catalogue, you will see the actual weaning and yearling weights which attribute to the strength and productiveness of these working cows. Blair is a staunch believer in pounds of calf at weaning and the program has been developed in such a manner. These breeders have built the core of this cowherd through strong cow families which they developed and then multiplied the top cows through embryo transplant. This cow herd is just coming into its prime; therefore, we will hear much more about these cows in years to come.

Over the past decade or so, Blair has developed a strong commercial and loyal customer base. Since mid October is far from bull buying season, Meadow Acres offers to keep and winter all bull purchases for the convenience of the customer. Simply put.....buy them, insure them and have them delivered next spring ready for breeding season. In addition, the Fornwalds offer a customer appreciation with half down and the balance in the spring.

teRms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

BiddinG: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder...no by-bidding will be permitted. disPutes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final. announCements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

BReedeR’s GuaRantee: As this is a dispersal sale, all cattle sell with no further guarantee. Any known defects will be announced before the cattle are sold.

PReGnanCY inFoRmation: All serviceable age females have been pregnancy examined by an accredited veterinarian, giving an estimated length of gestation.

This estimated gestation period shall be used only as a guideline to calving and is not a guarantee of actual service.

CeRtiFiCate oF ReGistRation: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Hereford Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

HealtH: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.
