To Our Dear Friends, Never in our wildest dreams did we think that catstudio would become what it is today. We modestly started with just 2 designs (Atlanta and Georgia) to celebrate the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A few years later, we officially founded catstudio, and now we have over 300 geographical and collegiate designs - and counting. Fast-forward to 2014 when we were humbled to win an award recognizing catstudio as the creator of the Geography niche in the home and gift industry. What an honor! This year we celebrate 22+ years of joyfully illustrating the world, and to celebrate, we want to hear your story. Everyone has a life story to share - a home, a happy place, a state of mind - and we love nothing more than hearing about where our artwork has found a home. From collections of glasses that celebrate the places you’ve been, to pillows that have been handed down from generation to generation - joyful memories arise from our artwork. That’s the heartbeat of catstudio and the reason we keep on doing what we do. We invite you to Tell Your Story: send us an email, a snailmail, or share your photos to Instagram with #mycatstudiostory. As you browse this catalog, you’ll see our pillows gracing a wide variety of homes. From vintage to modern, cottage to mansion, coastal to chalet chic - our pillows feel right at home in any design setting or aesthetic. We’d be honored for our original artwork to be a part of YOUR unique home! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love and support in this journey! Here’s to new friends, adventures, and most of all... stories! 2020 2021

How the
Geography Collection
Came to Life...
Once upon a time C(armel) A(nd) T(errell) — the ‘cat’ of catstudio – fell in love and discovered that they shared anthropological backgrounds and a thirst for travel. They also had a joy & deep appreciation for art, design and craftsmanship. Thus, they decided to put their interests together and design a timeless ode to geography & craftsmanship — the catstudio Geography Pillow. To begin to realize a collection, they had to climb 5 big steps: 1. Research — using maps, the internet, and conversations with many locals, they logged in 1,000’s of hours. 2. Design — drawing and drawing, 1,000’s more hours. Hopefully you’ll notice their obsessive attention to details! They believed every aspect was important. They sent drafts to savvy locals — the toughest critics, to help invoke an “insider” feeling of each place. Then re-draw & re-draw! 3. Color — more research hours spent to get the balance of colors pitch perfect….not an easy task! In some cases up to 30 colors adorn each pillow! 4. Artisanship — to get samples made, Terrell & Carmel went off in search of those craftsmen they so admired. Through serendipity, a trip to Hong Kong and Bali, they came upon a textile queen who introduced them to one of the world’s treasures: Indian hand embroiderers. (They presently employ over 1,000 artisans.)
5. Production — they and the textile queen knew this was going to be a challenging project: the extensive training time, the use of up to 30 thread colors per design, the realization that it took a week to embroider one pillow, and then, getting each word & icon correct! Finally, after all these hours (did we say 1,000’s? Ha!) of joyful work — trumpets sound — the unique inimitable catstudio hand embroidered pillow collection became a reality!!! Each pillow is unique in that every artisan’s work has its own “signature” and is one of a kind - like a snowflake. catstudio is constantly adding more designs and re-designing our current ones. Many are in their 3rd edition, which doesn’t even count the endless revisions and tweaks that take place in the life of a design! Now 12 years of work. The many joyous hours have paid off in producing these exquisite pillows as they’ve turned up in movies, magazines, graced beautiful homes (even the White House), are owned by Senators, Governors, Celebrities, and Terrell’s cousin in the hollows of Kentucky. Each one, signed by the artisan (care label), will surely stand the test of time and become a future heirloom. That’s the story, and it’s only the beginning…

United States of AMERICA,
A few notes about our wonderful country... As of June 2013, our population is 316 million. We’re living on 3.5 million square miles of mountains, plains, valleys, and seacoasts with 500,000 earthquakes in California each year. Interestingly, we’re the 3rd largest country in both size and population. We're 2 1/2 times the size of Western Europe, slightly larger than China, and 1/2 the size of South America.
72
One thing we've got plenty of (in some places) is water! The Great Lakes contain about 1/5 of the fresh water on Earth! Most of that fresh water ends up pouring over Niagara Falls at the rate of 750,000 gallons per second. You might be interested in knowing that Annie Taylor (& her cat) were the first in 1901 to go over the falls in a device (a homemade wooden barrel) and survive.
From Cold to Hot. The highest point is Mt. McKinley, Alaska at 20,320 feet and the lowest is Death Valley at minus 282 feet. What a country! We have cacti growing over 50 feet tall and weighing 10 tons! Birds with wingspans of up to 9.5 feet! Canyons a mile deep and rivers over 2,500 miles long. We've got trees over 4,600 years old and another tree that's 36 stories tall! And by the way, two mature trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of four. One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year. It seems like it's not a bad idea to hug a tree. Now after talking & thinking & planning & drawing & redrawing, we've squeezed America into 432 sq. inches (or 18" x 24")….and after a supercalifragilistically HUGE amount of blood, sweat, & embroidery we've got a masterpiece just for you!
