As one’s study increasingly discovers this to be so, his or her confidence in the credibility of its inspired claim will only increase. Yet, regardless of one’s belief of inspiration, there would still be far less debate over its teachings if people chose to simply respect Scripture’s claim enough to let it explain itself. 2) Handle It Correctly. 2 Timothy 2:15 should describe our study habits. Accurate interpretation can be achieved by keeping the following points in mind. 3) Know the Flow of Scripture. Scripture is not a collection of random sayings. Fun For the Fall by Brenda Dedmon
F
all is a beautiful time of the year with all the colors of the trees. There is a verse in the Bible that reminds us of why it is so beautiful. “God has made everything beautiful for
its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The fall weather is cooler, it is great
to be outside, and it is a great time to do fun activities with your family. Perhaps, you could ask your parents for a family meeting to talk about some fun things to do together. As you meet, ask each family member to name one thing they would like to do for the fall. The list could include: • Go to a football game and enjoy popcorn for a snack • Visit an apple farm and pick apples • Visit a corn maze • Visit a pumpkin farm and pick out a pumpkin to carve as a family • Have a picnic in the park or your backyard • Rake leaves and then jump in the leaves. You could make “leaf angels” as you would snow angels • Go for a bike ride or hike • Make a pinecone bird feeder thankful for, which includes family and friends. Fall gives us the opportunity to show our appreciation to others by doing things for them. The following are ideas you could do as a family: • Bake an Apple Pie • Make Pumpkin Bread • Make Hot Chocolate Packets • Make Caramel Apples • Make Apple Cider Packets • Make Apple Muffins • Make a Trail Mix and include Candy Corn A Family Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to spend time together. As a family plan to do five Saturday Hunts where you do one category each Saturday! It will be fun finding places you can discover these things to do. Even though there are some of the same scents in each category, find different places for each category. Make a list and check each one off as you do the activity. 1. LOOK for leaves of the following colors: Orange, Yellow, Red, for a squirrel and spider web

TASTE Pumpkin, Fresh Apples, Apple Cider, Hot Chocolate, Apple Jelly 5. SMELL Pumpkin Spices, Cinnamon, Apple Cider, Pine Needles, Hay, Corn It is important to document these family times, so take pictures of all the activities you do. For the activities you do for someone else, be sure to get a picture of you making the item and of you and the person when you share it with them. At the end of the month, have your parents print the pictures. You can organize all the pictures in a photo album and then write funny captions of the activities. You need to make sure you are helping your family in planning, preparing for, and participating in a fun time for the Fall Family Fun! “U” are an important part of the F “U” N! About The Author

After we came home one night, he said, “I don’t want to live here anymore.” I told him to put his shoes back on and get out. He stepped out the door, and I shut it. I watched him walk to the end of the driveway, look at the house, turn around with his head down and continue to walk. I went outside to follow him and make sure he was safe. I followed him to the end of the block and around the corner. At that time, he decided to turn around and come back home. I ran back into the house before he saw me and opened the

Noteworthy s a teacher, I often find myself in the middle of an explanation and see the blank look on a student’s face. The problem occurs when I am using a multimeaning word. Take the word note, which by the way, has several meanings. Musical “notes” have given me great pleasure over the years. Dick Clark once said, “Music is the soundtrack of your life.” I believe that. Music evokes such memories and emotions for me. The hymn “Love Lifted Me” takes me back to the wooden pew, sitting by Nana, eating cookies she packed in her purse. Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It to The Streets” has me marching on the football field in 1982. The “Bye, Baby Bunting” lullaby puts me rocking in a chair, snuggling with my girls, who are all grown up now. “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge brings my mind to a fashion show orchestrated by the local hospital as a fundraiser. My three sisters and I participated. What a sweet moment as our younger sister walked onto the stage. She had been in a horrible car accident the year before. It was a miracle she had lived, let alone about to walk! Note-worthy indeed. My favorite “notes” are the ones we leave for others. I tried to sneak notes in my girls’ lunch boxes or gym bags over the years to remind them how much they are loved. Recently, I helped a friend—whose mom passed away about a year ago—pack for a move back to her childhood hometown. Amid the boxes, she appeared carrying a large Ziplock bag. It was filled with yellow sticky notes that her mom had left in various places every time she had visited. I once read a story about a teacher who asked her students to “note” characteristics about their classmates. Many years later, one of those students was killed while serving his country. At the funeral viewing, some of his classmates discovered the young man had carried his peer’s notes in his wallet all those years. Noting the significance of others’ words, I was prompted to begin the activity in my fifth-grade classroom. I challenged the students to look for traits that others might overlook. One particular year, I had a student who had a

severe reading disability. He could not even write words, just a string of letters with no spaces. I tried to help Gabriel fit in by helping us with tasks in our room—adjusting technology cords and desks. He had a good sense of humor also, but he got so overwhelmed with his school work. The special educator took Gabriel to her room and read his notes to him: “You are funny,” “You are funny,” “You make me laugh.” But one brought tears to his eyes: “You are the bravest person I know.” At my age, mental “notes” are important. I certainly need to take notes to remember things. For instance, I
recently exited a grocery store and searched for my car. I often forget to note where I have parked. Spotting a sliver car, I strolled over only to realize it was pulling out of the spot. I quickly diverted my look to another car, hoping the driver did not think I was about to get in with him. I find myself writing notes and numbers on my hand when paper is not handy. However, with soap and water, they easily wash away. Not with God. He has noted us from the beginning. For when our names are engraved in our Heavenly Father’s hand, we will never be forgotten or washed away—Isaiah 49:16. About The Author

After proper rest, our minds and bodies are ready to continue toward our goals. Rest also helps us achieve our God-given potential. Recently, I traveled to Florida to put my small investment property up for sale after my renter’s contract ended. I found my couch and dining room set missing, along with the renter. After a good cry, I placed a sale-by-owner sign in the window. Soon afterward, a lady stopped to view my home and decided to purchase the house. Writing my first purchase agreement caused me much distress. A home inspector pointed out a few issues. The buyer chose to back out of the deal even

they can still throw us off track if we are not rough road ready. The trails’ roots, rocks, and ruts remind me of obstacles in life that we often face. The immovable, rigid, sometimes abrasive challenges leave us wounded and striving for a resolution and restoration. These wounds may be more profound than any physical pain, so time on the trail is time spent with the Lord. I love to invite the Lord to join me on my walk through the roots, rocks, and ruts on the trail and in life. When we reframe our thinking with a foundation of biblical truth, we can open our hearts to the refinement and restoration that only Christ can give. Luke 24:32 (CSB) states, “They said to each other, ‘Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?’” Inviting Jesus into our challenges and reframing our thoughts with God’s Word transforms our experience with roots, rocks, and ruts. Let’s take a look at verses that can restore our thinking: • Roots—May we be rooted in Christ Jesus: Colossians 2:6-7 (CSB) says, “So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to
When we reframe our thoughts around obstacles, we open ourselves up to accept God’s refinement in our life. He restores us when we seek and praise Him. Leaning on God allows us to face life’s obstacles and overcome them, even when they are disguised as roots, rocks, and ruts. Remember, we are commanded to be strong and courageous because the LORD is with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9). The Word of God gets us rough road ready!

We sat in the closet underneath the staircase in our home with our only hope—prayer. As I prayed, the Lord softly spoke to my spirit, “Psalm 91.” In this passage, it says that He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge. It brought comfort and peace amid uncertainty. Although I could not see what was happing around me—now I am thankful for that—I knew that God was with us and that He was assuring us of safety. Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread by Pam Wattenbarger
T
his Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread recipe makes a thick, dense bread that combines all
the favorite flavors of fall. It’s delicious for breakfast or for snacks, especially when served warm with a pat of butter. Be sure to use canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. The pecans can be omitted or walnuts can be substituted. For anyone who needs a gluten-free version, simply substitute 1 cup of Oneto-One Gluten-free Baking Mix for the all-purpose flour.
Ingredients • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking soda • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • ½ teaspoon allspice • 1 cup sugar • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened • ½ cup butter, softened • 4 large eggs • 1 (15-ounce) canned pumpkin
Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and allspice until blended. Set aside. 3. Place the sugar, cream cheese, and butter in a large mixing bowl. Using a mixer, blend at medium speed until the mixture is combined. 4. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix until blended after each addition. Add the canned pumpkin. Mix until blended. 5. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture. Stir until moistened. Stir in the pecans, if using. 6. Spray two 9” by 5” bread pans with nonstick cooking spray. Divide the batter equally between the two pans. 7. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, checking every five minutes after 30 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center of the loaves comes out clean.

The Choice Will Always Be Yours
uke 10:38-42 tells the story of Mary and Martha, two sisters, and their choices. The sisters welcome Jesus and His followers into their home. As you read, imagine your family has invited friends over for a fall bonfire in your backyard. While having guests in your home is a positive experience, it can also be stressful—especially when you have preconceived notions about how the event should unfold. Now, let us see what we can learn from the choices of these two sisters as they throw a party. One sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet listening to him while Martha was distracted with preparations. I can hear Martha saying, “Can you believe Mary is leaving me all this work to do by myself? I want this meal to be perfect, and I need her to make the bread.” After milling around the kitchen another five minutes, her anger gets the best of her. She marches in to see Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (Luke 10:40). Sound familiar? How many times has our justified anger reached our boiling point—when we begin to think we know best? Sometimes, we get so bold, we approach the Lord and explain in detail how He needs to handle the situation. We, a people who barely understand our thoughts and feelings, think we know best. We try to advise the One who sees into everyone’s hearts how to run the show. Remember the bonfire I told you you’re planning? Your guest will be arriving in thirty minutes, and you are not ready. A fight breaks out between you and your spouse. The husband wants his wife to make the salad, but she is putting on her makeup. As a wife, you think your husband should be blowing off the driveway, yet he is nowhere to be found. Yes, I rest my case. The story is still relevant today. Husbands and wives tend to play this dangerous little game from time to time—Who contributes to the family the most? We think we know best when it comes to how they should spend their time. I love how Jesus responds to Martha’s request. I imagine Jesus shaking His head as He says, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one
38 // October 2021
thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42). Okay, wait, Jesus, what is the one thing that is needed? What is better than being productive and prepared? Mary was simply being with Jesus! She sat at His feet listening. Being with someone you love and listening to them is better than being busy and pursuing perfection. Are we filling our October calendars so full we are missing the one thing that is needed—the one thing that will never be taken away from us?
Jesus addressed the condition of Martha’s heart. He told her she was worried and upset about many things. Jesus helps reveal to us the condition of our hearts too. Martha’s actions teach us another important lesson. We can and should bring our emotions to the Lord, even when we are acting like whining toddlers—that might be the time to run and find Him quickly. Jesus lovingly reset Martha’s heart and priorities for the day. He is willing and able to work on our hearts too. What is the condition of your heart? Do you make time to be with Jesus? Mary made the better choice that day, but we also have that same choice every single day. The choice will always be yours, but time spent with the Lord always yields the best returns! We need to prepare them to stand up for the Lord and not fall into society’s hands. I read something the other day that has been heavy on my mind. “Why would you bring a

left some real bad stuff behind me,
I’m walking in his favor,
Jesus carried me through pain,
He removed that infected thorn,
He filled my heart with joy,
He’s the only true friend I’ve ever had, He’s got me higher than the sky,

He threw me up into the air,
I thank Jesus every morn,
After he taught me how to fly!
