Gò0dNews from the Pastor’s Desk

Pray for Your Pastor grew up as a preacher’s kid. I don’t think I was all that bad, just maybe held to a higher standard sometimes. I remember growing up never really seeing my Dad stop and relax. He was always either working to support our family or doing some church work as a pastor. It was not easy having a dad who wore so many hats. My dad passed away at the age of 58. I believe to this day he just could not go on with that pace of life and he could not stop. He loved his family, but most of all, he loved God and gave his life in the service for both.

I often think of my Dad as one of the Old Testament prophets. He cared more about what God said than pleasing the crowds. He would study and pray until he was full, and he would preach until he was empty. Many times, after preaching all day on Sunday, he would come home and be very down and ready to quit, but by Wednesday, he would be ready to go again. Several years ago, God began to deal with me about preaching. My first reaction was that I didn’t want to be considered one following in my Dad’s footsteps. My second reaction was that I wasn’t sure that was what I had planned to do. I wanted to do God’s will, but I was just not sure this was what He wanted. After much prayer and over a year of wrestling with the thought of God’s calling me, I surrendered to His will. I knew that a call to preach was a call to prepare,

6 // October 2019

so I started Bible College. After my Dad passed away, I was called to be the pastor of the same church in which he was pastoring at the time of his passing. With much prayer and support, I accepted the position. It was not long into my first pastorate that I was having some of the same emotions I witnessed my Dad go through. I called it the PPSD (Pastor’s Post-Sunday Depression). I thought it would pass with time, but here we are, more than twenty years into pastoring, and I would have to say that it is still a battle. I am sure that most pastors go through the same battle after preaching and giving their heart through preaching. I have also noticed the up and down motions of just talking with people. You may be rejoicing one minute with a family that has just told you about a prayer that was answered in their life, only to be brought down the next with a special need or request in someone else’s life. The constant up and down does take its toll on your life, and unfortunately, it also plays into the entire family. I have seen statistics that show 1,500 pastors will leave the ministry each month and 1,300 will be terminated. There will be 7,000 churches that close their doors each year. I don’t know how true these numbers are or how close they are to the truth. I often think these numbers may be low. Some have said that it is getting better and the numbers are much less. I pray that they are. We must learn to pray for our pastors. I say that not because I am one, but so you will keep your pastor lifted in prayer. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 11:28, “Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.” The Scriptures say that pastors “watch for your souls.” I would not want to give up what God has called me to do. Sometimes it is a challenge for me and my family, but God’s grace has always been sufficient for every need. Please, pray for your pastor, and when you can, give him a word of encouragement or volunteer to do something around the church. Nothing encourages a pastor like someone who wants to do something for God.

What Gets Measured Gets Managed MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

R

emember the last time you seriously tried to lose some weight? You were probably on the scale every day, watching your weight and writing it down in a journal or saving it in notes on your cell phone. By monitoring your weight every day, you were able to know precisely how much progress (or regress) you were making toward your goal. Similarly, some people like to keep a prayer journal to track their spiritual growth; besides offering a place for spiritual reflection, a prayer journal also serves as a daily reminder to take time to talk to God. It’s the same with our finances. We can know we’re serious about improving our financial situation when we start “measuring” our goals by writing them down, and “managing” our finances by keeping a written budget and monitoring our progress (or regress) regularly. Let’s see how this might look in real life. Sally begins by making a personal “balance sheet” for the first time in her life. She lists all her debts (or “liabilities”) on one side of a document, noting the precise amounts she owes and the names of all her creditors. In her case, the list includes college student loans, a car loan, and a few credit cards. Then she makes a list of her “assets” or things she owns, including her checking and savings account balances and a ring her grandmother left her. Sally immediately notices that she has a “negative net worth,” meaning she has more debts than she has assets. Once she has “measured” her financial situation by writing it down, she is now ready to “manage” it. Without first being honest with herself by examining her finances, Sally would likely never take that next crucial step to improve herself

10 // October 2019

financially. She next makes a written budget of her monthly bills, and notices that she should, in theory, have nearly seven hundred dollars left over every month after paying all of her bills, including debt payments. Where has this extra seven hundred dollars been going? Sally has no clue, so she examines her past ninety days of bank statements, seeing where every debit card “swipe” went. She discovers to her dismay that her “leftover” cash had disappeared through shopping online and eating out. Chastened but determined, Sally makes a new written plan where she will intentionally direct that extra seven hundred dollars per month toward her debts, paying them off one by one, from smallest balance to the largest balance. To her surprise, she realizes she can be debt-free in only two years using this plan (if she takes an extra weekend job, she can do it even faster). This realization inspires Sally to begin exploring how to build up her assets as soon as her debts are paid off. She realizes she has never signed up for her employer’s 401(k) retirement plan at work, and she starts looking into that. Unfortunately, she realizes she has missed out on lots of “free money” over the years since her employer offers a five percent “match” when employees contribute to their 401(k) via payroll deduction. Sally commits to enrolling in the plan immediately in order to get that free money every month. She also educates herself about setting up a Roth IRA using low-cost stock index mutual funds. With these simple steps, Sally’s finances will experience a fabulous turnaround in just a few years, and within two decades, she should be quite wealthy. It starts with “measuring,” and then “managing.” “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3).

Very subtly through the fashion industry, news media, music, social media, and Hollywood, TV, and the movie industry, thoughts and ideas are planted to dictate to us our worth and value system; what defines beauty; how marriage should look; how we should raise our children; what career we should choose; and everything else under the sun! Our filter, the lenses through which we absolutely must view ourselves and our entire lives, must be from the inside out, from the new life granted us by God’s Spirit through Jesus Christ. This is where we must place more focus and attention. Heritage’s employees pride themselves on the personal touch they give in creating tributes reflecting the uniqueness of a loved one. Tributes created by Heritage are treated as an empty canvas because no two funerals should be the exact same. Ceremonial music, tribute videos, memorial folders, memory tables, and photo collages are all just the beginning to a vast array of items used in creating an environment representing families and their loved ones.

Gò0dNews for Parents

Just Because You Are You ive-year-old Joseph sat cross-legged in the floor, staring at the television. He watched Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood every afternoon. When the program ended, Joseph announced, “I like Mister Rogers. You know why I like him, Mama? Cause he likes me just the way I am.” I looked up from the button I was sewing back onto a shirt. “I like him, too.” And I did. I liked Fred Rogers’ philosophy of making each child feel good about himself or herself. I can’t count the times I heard him say something like, “You are special. I like you just because you are you. There is no one else exactly like you.” The year my son turned thirteen, I saw the difference a few positive words can make in a child’s life. Our church was in the midst of building a new sanctuary. Several members were in the construction business, so much of the work was performed by our own people. One Saturday morning, Joseph asked, “Will you take me to the church, Mama? I want to help with the roof.” The following Sunday, the preacher thanked the men and women who had given time to the project. “Could I say something, pastor?” Larry

Giles stood to his feet. He was a founding father of our church, a World War II veteran, a former POW, and a respected Bible teacher. “I echo your appreciation of the men and women who worked yesterday. One of those men was Joseph Ledbetter. I call him a man because he did a man’s job and hung in there just as long as any of the rest of us.” He looked at my son. “I’m proud of you, Joseph.” Joseph sat a little taller in the pew. His cheeks were a bit pink, and I could see he felt good about himself. He felt valued. He felt part of something big and important. Even as I type these words, tears well up in my eyes, tears of gratitude for the individuals who have affirmed my children through the years. Scripture tells us to “encourage one another day after day” (Hebrews 3:13). Paul instructed the Thessalonians to “encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Children are part of “one another.” They live in a world bombarded by voices that tear them down and tell them they are not enough. Let’s stand against those voices by taking advantage of opportunities to speak words of encouragement. I promise you, it will be time well spent. What if the child hasn’t accomplished anything special? Take a tip from Mister Rogers. Tell the child, “I like you just because you are you.” “A hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” –Forest E. Witcraft

support the idea of burning off a significant amount of fat

The Definition of “Tone” Usually, when people say they want to “tone up,” they have an image in their mind of a body where the muscles are harder looking and not hidden so much under a layer of fat. This is really talking about two things: first, losing some fat to turn a thicker layer of fat into a thinner layer, and second, building up or hardening the muscle underneath. So, what is the best way to achieve this? The Number One Exercise for Toning Physiologically, “muscle tone” describes the readiness of a muscle to contract or do work even when at rest. A muscle that lacks “tone” appears very slack or flaccid because the nervous system that turns on the muscle fibers has been largely disengaged

2. Set a goal bedtime. Look at the chart above to figure out how many hours your child needs to sleep. Then count backwards from when they need to get up in the morning so you know what time to plan for bedtime. Just like jet lag during travel makes it harder to fall asleep, sticking to the same bedtime every day makes it easier for your child to fall asleep. 3. Turn off electronics (TV, tablets, phones, and games) 30-60 minutes prior to bedtime. Turning them off is partly helpful because it is hard to stop exciting videos or games to go to bed. It is also important because the light from the screens can lower the melatonin made by your child’s body. This is a problem because melatonin is the hormone that helps you feel sleepy when it is bedtime. 4. Keep up a regular bedtime routine. Having a set of

Regardless of our age, life is going to end one day. What if we spent our remaining days like they are our last and served people as Jesus did? What if our focus was on making disciples who make disciples? We know the Great Commission was the final recorded command of Jesus. Most of the time, we immediately think of all of the negatives, but there are many ways that singlehood can bring a fruitful and fulfilling life. Singles have more time to devote to serving and helping others. There aren’t as many demands on their time, so this opens up countless opportunities to bless others. There is a freedom that comes from being able to function and make decisions without having to include numerous other family members. Being able to come and go as needed opens up a whole new world for the single that the married person very rarely gets to experience.

I couldn’t understand why kids couldn’t like me for who I was. Fortunately, I attended a Christian school and a Christian college, so the peer pressure to do bad things or go bad places really wasn’t a factor in my life. I loved God and really wanted to please Him. I had learned over time that I wasn’t going to be able to please a lot of people. I was a pleaser by nature, so that was difficult to deal with emotionally. But, I sought solace in my relationship with God. Here’s the good news: God didn’t disappoint me.
