Thank God! ears ago, I met a joyful older woman who had suffered greatly throughout her lifetime. Her “secret” to remaining joyful? Worship God! I took her advice to heart and choose to worship God in spite of how I might feel sometimes. Personally, I am a lover of old hymns and have often turned to them in troubled times. During this bizarre season, one hymn in particular stands out. “Now Thank We All Our God” was written by Martin Rinkart in 1637, by far the most
disastrous year of his life, when his small town of Eilenburg experienced war, famine, and plague. Rinkart’s wife died, as did thousands of his parishioners—with Rinkart conducting all their funerals. The words to the hymn he composed in the midst of this are haunting, and they challenge us to worship God no matter what: Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, in Whom this world rejoices; Who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

NOW? In the midst of suffering? THANK GOD? How could Rinkart offer gratitude during the tragedy he endured? I can only attribute this to an intense and purposeful obedience to Scriptures like the following: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). “Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us” (Romans 5:3-5). I want to be someone who rejoices in my sufferings (which are, relatively speaking, quite light) and give thanks in my circumstances because thankfulness and joy are what God wants for me, and I know He wants the best for me. I want perseverance resulting in great character and, out of great character, to be a man of courageous hope. What an upward calling we have in Christ! May we truly pursue it. God give us the grace to be like Martin Rinkart, who had an astounding level of hope and joy in the midst of unspeakable difficulty. God help us to be like the older woman I met who had suffered intensely but was still filled with joy because she maintained a life of worshiping God no matter what came her way. Wherever you are, and whatever you are going through, I encourage you to worship with all you have, and I leave you with the words of Rinkart’s second stanza: O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us; And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed; And free us from all ills, in this world and the next! Don’t Be Idle MONEY MATTERS

I
n one of my favorite novels, As I Lay Dying (1930) by my favorite novelist William Faulkner, an old man named Anse Bundren justifies his laziness by reasoning that once he gets to Heaven, riches and wealth “will be taken from them that have and give[n] to them that have not.” But what does Jesus say in Matthew 25:29? “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” Anse Bundren actually seems to have it backward, biblically speaking. Yet old Anse and those like him often attribute their poverty to “bad luck.” But as Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” The harder we work, the “luckier” we get! When I was a kid growing up in the 1970’s, I cannot recall seeing anyone holding a sign on a corner begging money. Rather, I remember a blind man who stood regularly outside the Post Office downtown with a cup of pencils he was selling to make money. This man was obviously and permanently disabled. Today, on countless street corners and interstate on-ramps, there are young, apparently able-bodied men and women holding cardboard signs expecting to be handed money (and this was true for many years before our current pandemic). As Christians, we are instructed to help the poor, the widow, and the orphan—no question about it. But I also believe God wants us to use sound judgment (discernment) and not simply hand over our money indiscriminately to anyone who is panhandling or holding a sign on a corner. Robert D. Lupton has an eye-opening book entitled Toxic Charity: How the Church Hurts Those They Help and How to Reverse It. Lupton has worked for many years with numerous charitable and

missions-minded organizations, and one of the author’s observations is that “giving to those in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy people.” There is a considerable difference between giving to help people during an immediate crisis (disaster relief, for instance) and regularly giving to the same people who chronically solicit donations. This latter dynamic might actually be “enabling” destructive behaviors such as idleness or substance abuse. In 2 Thessalonians 3:6-7, Paul goes one step further: “Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you.” Surrounding ourselves with idle people may end up infecting us with the same apathy, hopelessness, and sloth. At the very least, we might normalize and legitimize idleness (notice how this sounds nicer than “laziness”). After all, one must wonder why we’ve had a proliferation of aggressive panhandling in cities and towns across America (sometimes turning violent), as well as the ubiquitous people holding cardboard signs at countless intersections. For those reading my column in this magazine, odds are you currently have a job and are working diligently in pursuit of your goals—paying bills, trying to save something for a rainy day, and investing for your retirement. On the other hand, many have become unemployed during this pandemic, and there’s a chance that more may join the jobless ranks unless the pandemic ends in the near future. Let’s encourage those less fortunate, offer godly counsel, and a “hand up” in addition to the occasional “handout.”

Today I Saw God

s we approach this season of Thanksgiving hoping to find our tables filled with desserts, I want to share a little story with you as a
reminder that God is working ALL things for your good just as He promises in Romans 8:28. I pray we are reminded to fill our homes with the sweet aroma of gratitude no matter what our situations and circumstances look like. A few weeks ago, I was having one of those days where I needed a little pick me up. Jeremy lost his job during this COVID-19 situation, and although it seems to be a terrible thing and it has been a challenging, we understand God has a greater purpose in this moment for our family, our marriage, and our ministries. We know God is more than able to provide abundantly above all we need, but there are days where we are human, and our faith seems to fall short compared to that of the biblical characters we admire. This particular day was one of those days for me. Yet, I remained steadfast in prayer. Ever so carelessly, a mere thought passed from my mind to my lips and I whispered, “Jesus, I would really like some chocolate”. I thought nothing else of my prayer nor my additional small whisper afterwards. The next day I received a call from an unexpected guest, saying she had some gifts to bring us. When she arrived, I sent Kainen outside to pick up the box she brought. It was filled with lots of blessings, and you guessed it, among those gifts were chocolate bars. Not just one kind of chocolate but a variety of chocolate bars, filled with delicious goodness of all sorts, like
glory. And sometimes He even supplies our wants. Today, I saw God in the gift of a candy bar! Where did you see Him? “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

ounded in 2004, Challenge Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Cleveland, Tennessee. Challenge Golf’s mission is to use the game of golf as a
catalyst to expand the Kingdom of God. Golf provides a nonthreatening way to meet golfers in their circumstances, be there for them in their time of need, point them to Jesus, share the Gospel with seekers, and teach discipleship principles. Why is the mission of Challenge Golf so relevant today? Our mission field is huge, with 26 million golfers and 15,000 courses in the United States alone. The Barna Research Group produced a recent survey illustrating why it’s a mission field ripe for the harvest. A typical golf tournament with 100 players most likely includes: • 37 suffering from alcohol or substance abuse, • 35 addicted to pornography, • 23 considering bankruptcy, • 45 alienated from their children, • 27 devastated by a failed marriage, and • 2 seriously contemplating suicide! What is COPD?

OPD affects over 30 million people in the U.S. Correct diagnosis and education are the key to appropriate and adequate treatment. COPD develops slowly and can worsen over time. When COPD is severe, symptoms can get in the way of the most basic tasks, such as doing light housework, taking a walk, even bathing and getting dressed. Many people with COPD avoid activities that they used to enjoy because they have difficulty breathing. What is COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term used to describe chronic lung diseases including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. This disease is characterized by shortness of breath. COPD is currently an incurable disease, but with the right diagnosis and treatment, there are many things you can do to breathe better and enjoy life. Chronic: “Chronic” means that the disease lasts a long time and is always present. While the symptoms may take years to develop and the severity may differ at times, there is still much you can do to slow the progress of the disease. Obstructive: The ability to move air in and out of the lungs is blocked or obstructed. This is caused by swelling and extra mucus in the tubes of the lungs which carry air in and out. Pulmonary: This means that the disease is located in the lungs. Disease: The lungs have some damage. But even though a cure hasn’t been found yet, the symptoms can be treated. Signs and Symptoms of COPD It’s easy to think of shortness of breath and coughing as a normal part of aging, but these could be signs of COPD. COPD can progress for years without noticeable shortness of breath. That’s why it is important to talk with your healthcare provider as soon as you notice these symptoms. Everyone at risk for COPD who has cough, breathlessness, or sputum production, should have a pulmonary lung function test (spirometry). Ask your healthcare provider about ordering this test. Spirometry measures the amount of air a person can blow out of the lungs (volume) and how fast they can blow it out (flow). Symptoms of COPD can be different for each person, but the common symptoms are: • Increased shortness of breath • Frequent coughing (with and without mucus) • Wheezing • Tightness in the chest Not all COPD is the same There are different types of COPD. Each type may affect how well different treatments work, how symptoms affect everyday life, and how they progress. If you have another health condition in addition to COPD, such as high blood pressure, heart disease,

heartburn, depression, or diabetes, this can also affect COPD and how it is managed. Here are some things that can help determine the particular type of COPD. Taking these things into consideration can be useful in addition to spirometry numbers and other factors. 1. Do you have a cough? If so, do you cough up mucus on most days for at least three months in a period of at least two years? If yes, you may have a chronic bronchitis type of COPD that will respond to different medicines. 2. Have you been told that your lungs are stretched out and bigger than normal? If so, are they stretched out throughout your whole lung or just in certain places? If so, this is emphysema which is diagnosed by a radiology test. Sometimes it is possible to decrease the size of the big, stretched out places in the lungs. Who is at Risk? Smoking cigarettes is the principal risk factor for COPD in the U.S. There are other risk factors, including pollutants such as fumes or chemicals, dust, and smoke (including secondhand smoke). In some cases, COPD is caused by a genetic condition called alpha-1antitrypsin deficiency. COPD most often occurs in people over age 40, but can develop earlier in individuals with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. COPD diagnosis requires, at a minimum, a medical history, physical exam, and low flow rates on spirometry. What do I do if I have COPD? 1. Quit smoking. It is never too late to quit smoking. 2. Avoid exposure to pollutants (fumes, chemicals, dust, and smoke). 3. Visit your healthcare provider or pulmonologist on a regular basis, even when you are not sick. Many medications used for COPD are delivered by inhalers, so ask your healthcare provider to show you how to use inhalers correctly and then check your inhaler technique. Be sure to tell your doctor about all your health conditions and bring all your medicines to your visit. 4. Take precautions against seasonal flu. This includes getting a flu vaccine each year.

ustling Tel Aviv and the contrasting quiet shores of the Sea of Galilee; my baptism in the Jordan River where Jesus himself experienced the same newness of life;
the picturesque view of the Mediterranean Sea, and the walls of Old Jerusalem; the City of David, old ruins of The Roman Empire and the town of Bethlehem. The journey I had made to the Holy Land provided countless opportunities to walk where Jesus walked, imaginings of him playing as a little boy. Visions of Him speaking and mentoring His disciples came into focus just as his long walk down the Via Dolorosa did. Jesus’s life, though short, was full of living. Of all the memories made during my travels there was one brief period of time that encapsulated an extreme array of emotions extending from silent tears to songs of gratitude and praise. Descending the steep stairway to the dungeon in the excavated palace once belonging to Caiphas, the High Priest, I could feel the air getting warmer and more humid the further I went down. At the bottom the stone walls were cold offering a bit of relief from the pall of the moist, motionless air. It was here that Jesus was imprisoned for a short time after being scourged and beaten. Blood, perspiration, and dirt mixed with the dank air dripped down His face into His eyes. His sight obscured though His vision and objective clear. He was voluntarily there as the blood sacrifice of a spotless lamb. His life’s purpose almost complete. Glancing around the small dimly lit space the only light came from above our heads from the hole in the ceiling where Jesus might possibly have been thrown to the floor 20 feet below where I now stood. The silence screamed the emotions felt by all of us lining the walls. Pressed by the stones surrounding us, breathing in the oppressive stale air, tears silently rolled from our eyes as we stood listening to the agonal words of Jesus from Psalm 88. Sitting on the floor of this room He had felt alone, forgotten and forsaken, heavy with the burden of His purpose, crying out to His Father. His despair was almost still palpable in this dungeon. At the completion of the scripture reading, softly at first, then increasing in volume as we raised our voices in song, came

the familiar words of the old hymn- “What Can Wash Away My Sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus.” Those words became even more real and personal for me that day. I was in a place where that atoning blood had splattered and landed on the very stones under my feet. My own sobs erupted in physical and emotional response to the feeling of being overcome and overwhelmed by the length Jesus had gone to restore a relationship with me and the depth of suffering He endured to accomplish that. I have struggled for years recognizing my own value. That day it became more apparent, I was being reminded of the tremendous price that had been paid for me. Believing myself to be less than His intent for me and my life diminishes the work of Jesus and the sacrifice He had so willingly made. Leaving that place after prayer that afternoon, slowly, silently, and solemnly making the trek back up the steep stairs, I felt I was walking out into the fresh air as a new follower of Christ. One with a deeper more personal commitment and connection; one with enhanced understanding, enriched passion, and identifiable purpose. The unprecedented times we are in now call for stronger faith, deeper commitment, and a more solid and focused connection. Little did I know then how I would need to rely on that journey's memory to help me stay focused on the goodness of God, His sovereignty and unparalleled sacrifice.

Be Spirit-Filled And Spirit-Led

e are officially entering into the holiday season. For many of us, this is an enjoyable season. For others, it’s a season fraught with sadness as a result of loss, past years of hurt, or family drama. But for pretty much all of us, this can be a season of exceedingly long to-do lists and being overwhelmed. How are we to combat this excessive stress and put an end to it? Can we even do that? Is that a realistic option for us? Yes, I believe it is. But there is only one sure-fire way to make it happen, and that is this: by listening to the Lord rather than man. We can be led astray by humans but never by God. And that is what I want you to be reminded of this holiday season.
“Bah humbug!” brought about by stress, remind yourself of the Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. Read of the plight of the Israelites as they groan for a Deliverer. Discover the symbolic pictures of Christ found in the Old Testament books. Then turn to the New Testament and read Luke’s version of the Christmas story. Discover the hope, joy, peace, and love brought about by the long-awaited fulfillment of those prophecies from long ago.
How to be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led this holiday season:
Search the Word. Secondly, get in the Word. Reading the Word and being in prayer are the only sure-fire ways you can go about assessing your true priorities and responsibilities this season. Just in case I haven’t harped enough on the importance of prayer in all this, I want to share one of my favorite Bible verses with you, James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” As we are approaching Thanksgiving and Christmas and trying to decide what we will and will not do this year, remember this: The Lord has already promised that He undoubtedly will provide you with the wisdom and direction you need when you ask for it. So just ask, friend! He’s ready and willing to hear from you!
