Praying for Those in Authority

O

by Jeffery Carter

ne area of the Christian life that most Christ followers must admit they are not satisfied with is their prayer life. One particular area that may be a struggle is the matter of praying for those in leadership positions. This could include your boss or teacher all the way up to your local government and federal government officials. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 gives the church special instructions on prayer including teaching about praying for

mother and brothers executed to secure his throne. He took Christians that perhaps Paul knew, dipped their bodies in wax and set them on fire, using the light to light his dinner parties. Paul is saying pray for Nero!

those in authority.

The message for the Christian is this: Even when we do not agree with the policies of the people who lead us, we should still pray for them. Regardless of how wicked they may be, their work should be bathed in the prayers of God's saints.

1. The Seriousness of our prayers (1 Tim 2:1)

3. The Savior over our prayers (1 Tim 2:2b-4)

Paul urges the church to pray and he uses the phrase “first of all” which means to make it a priority. He says there should be requests, general prayers, prayers made on behalf of others, and prayers of thanksgiving. The point he is making is that in some way, shape, or form, there is always a need for prayer.

After telling the church that these prayers, on behalf of all people, will lead to some peace in life, he then says that this lifestyle of prayer is pleasing in the sight of our Savior who wants all people to be saved.

Paul says that these different types of prayers should be made on behalf of all people. There is absolutely no one in the world who should be beyond the prayers of God's people! Whether you like them or not, you should pray for them. But Paul continues his point. He says to pray for kings and for all that are in authority. As we pray for our family and friends, let us not forget to pray for our leaders. They need the wisdom of God to be able to carry out their offices. When Paul wrote these words, Nero was the Emperor of Rome. He was a wicked man who even had his own

Whether you like the people in leadership in your life or not, you should be praying for them. Pray for discernment and guidance in their lives. Pray to God for those in authority!

2. The Scope of our prayers (1 Tim 2:1-2a)

I firmly believe that God intervenes in the affairs of men. He can overrule a wicked leader. He can impress a wicked leader to make godly decisions! We need to pray for those in power, especially right now. And perhaps if we’d pray for it, lost leaders would get saved.

Science and Christianity

A

by Janelle Martin

s a mother, and an educator, I have learned that science is not the enemy of Christianity, but the confirmation of God’s wonderful plan of creation. Here are some fun things you can do with your children to teach them some simple scientific principals as well as God’s amazing ways. 1. Bubbles and Balls: Using several different bubble wands, show the children that no matter the shape of the wand, bubbles are always round. The reason they are round is that bubbles are shaped by the air pressure around it. God doesn’t want us to be shaped by our world, but for us to remain the way he made us, like a rubber ball. Eventually, a bubble will break because the pressure outside becomes greater

4. Diversity Lesson: Take several hard boiled eggs, and dye them different colors. After they dry, peel them and show the children that on the inside, they all look the same. Then explain how God created us all differently and yet on the inside, we are all the same. 5. Salt Makes a Difference: Using a ¼ cup Epsom Salt, and ¼ cup warm water, in a clear cup stir until the salt is dissolved and then add a few

than the pressure inside. A solid rubber ball doesn’t lose its shape.

3. Penny Polishing: Find some dirty pennies, and place them in a clear cup. Cover them with lemon juice and let them soak for 10 minutes, then clean them off with a paper towel. They will look brand new! This is a chance to let children know that God can take our dirty hearts and make them clean with His Love!

drops of food coloring. Place the cup in the refrigerator until crystals begin to form (about 4 hours). Spoon the crystals out on a paper plate. Jesus tells us to be salt and light in our world, so that the world can see that adding Jesus to our lives makes a difference. I hope you’ll take advantage of these activities to make a teachable moment with your children. (These are especially good on those rainy days!)

2. Chalk in Buttermilk: Soak small pieces of colored chalk in buttermilk for about an hour, then let the children color either on black paper or on the sidewalk and note how much brighter the colors are, and that they change color as they dry. When we “soak” ourselves in God’s word and His teachings, it makes a difference in us, and how the world sees us.

Now, Jesus being our Lord means obeying His Word, doing what He says. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” We are His slaves. We have no rights. So, what is Jesus expecting us to do? Just one thing. Make disciples. Note Matthew 28:1820: “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Gò0dNews for Women

Laying Up Treasures just love yard sales. Every year, I look forward to the warmer Saturdays that spring brings and those neon pink and green ‘Yard Sale’ signs that inevitably begin to pop up all over town. There is something thrilling about searching through boxes and tables and garages full of others’ castaways. You just never know what you’ll find! A cute shirt that is just my size, a barely-used candle, a well-worn ball glove for my son, endless possibilities. I have to be careful not to overdo it, because it doesn’t take very much “collecting” to clutter up my house and crowd out my own cabinets, drawers, and closets. Consequently, I have to have yard sales of my own every year or so. It’s a vicious, selfinduced cycle. This cycle of wanting something and then getting rid of it helps me to be mindful of how much importance I place on things that have no eternal value. Like the physical possessions that eventually become ‘junk’ at a yard sale, such is anything in life that I am giving my time, my money, my thoughts, or my ‘heart’ to that isn’t a part of God’s eternal plan for my life. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” As women, we tend to put our heart into most of what we do, from our careers to our families to our hobbies and interests. The danger comes in forgetting that this life of ups and downs, with all of its priorities and responsibilities, is not eternal and our treasure is not here! It is natural to want a happy life full of good things, but sometimes we become so involved in the immediate circumstances of our lives that we forget that this world and everything in it will soon be gone. You have probably heard the expression “You can’t take it with you when you go”. While it may be true that we cannot take anything from earth to heaven, what we sometimes forget is that we can store up treasures in Heaven while we are here on earth! Matthew 6:19-20 says, “Do not store up for yourselves

14 // June 2018

treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.” To me, these treasures are our relationships with God and others whom we strive to reach with the Gospel of Christ.

In this fast-paced world of busyness that can often get overwhelming, it is such a comfort to be reminded of the truth of our Father’s steadfast and unchanging love that will last for all of eternity. Plans change, but God doesn’t. Jobs change, but God doesn’t. Relationships change, but God doesn’t. You could fill in the blank with almost any word: ________change(s). Everything applies! Everything except for God, that is. He is the beginning and the end and he has known our life from beginning to end, down to the very number of hairs on our head. He is the one treasure that we can take with us in the end, when all else has faded away. Hold to His unchanging hand today and cling to those treasures that have real, eternal value. All other ground is sinking sand.

Two Life-Changing Decisions

ave you ever had to make a difficult decision that would require personal sacrifice and be emotionally gut-wrenching? Imagine having to make such a decision at a young and vulnerable age. At the 2017 Bethany Christian Services banquet, Stephanie Bacon and Evie West shared their stories of unexpected pregnancy and choosing adoption. Stephanie was a pastor’s daughter. She started dating a boy in youth group and became pregnant. As a young teen who didn’t have a job or a driver’s license, she thought adoption was the best alternative for her baby. “I knew all along I wanted an open adoption. I wanted a connection to my son. I got their profile, I looked through their pictures, I read their letter, and I talked to them. I loved the idea of this family. When I had him, he was four weeks early. They took him to the neonatal intensive care unit and that is where he stayed until released. I believe if I would have had him in the room with me, it would have been very difficult. God knew what I needed in that moment.” Stephanie had heard of Bethany Christian Services in Chattanooga, and she learned that they have a birth parent support group. “I thought, how cool is that? We definitely need support. Even 18 years later, we still need support to get through our adoption.” Stephanie met with the Bethany birth parent group and was able to connect with other birth moms in the support group. Stephanie has been able to share her story and meets with high school girls and others who are going through the struggle she went through. Evie West was brought up by Christian parents in a sheltered upbringing. In high school, she was introduced to gang life. After becoming pregnant and having her son, she thought she would give up the gang

life. Finding out the responsibility of parenting was not for her, a week later she left him with a baby sitter and returned to school and her former behavior. “I turned back to doing all the things that I wanted to do- smoking dope, drinking, partying, and this gang lifestyle.” Later attending Lee University, Evie rededicated her life to Christ and began reading her Bible and spending time with God. She found out for the second

time she was pregnant. “I was singing for Lee Choir, I went out of town, I met a lady who had come up to me and loved on me and through divine intervention the Lord spoke to her and said I was pregnant.” This kind woman found her a doctor, helped her get insurance and financial assistance. Later on, she asked Evie if she had considered adoption. “I think placing my [second] son for adoption was the best decision that I could have ever made for him. It was difficult, but it was not such a difficult decision that God cannot heal and prove Himself faithful as He does in every situation.”

Understanding Your Role in Achieving Holistic Health

H

by Sara L. Campbell

and for many persons, this may mean a combination of self-care and healthcare. As you work with healthcare providers, be responsible and do your part. Take care of your whole being and expect a holistic approach to your health from your healthcare provider. Do not settle for anything less.

Health promotion and disease prevention should be a major focus for you and your family. Develop a lifestyle that embodies your entire being, seeking natural, safe, and effective approaches for health promotion and disease prevention. A healthy diet, regular exercise, obtaining appropriate screenings, getting adequate sleep and rest, maintaining an intimate relationship with the Lord, and engaging in fellowship with others are all vital to one’s holistic health. Be sure to put good things into your body, including what you watch, read, and listen to on a daily basis. Be sure to include prayer for health, protection, and any needed healing. Some people are concerned that if they seek medical advice, they are not trusting God. God created healthcare providers and Christian providers seek the Lord in their daily work. Holistic health is best achieved through a healthy balance of approaches. Extreme approaches to your health may include a decision to stop all of your medications, or on the other end of the spectrum, to only depend on medications. God wants us to collaborate with Him to achieve health

Do your homework using reliable sources. Wikipedia is not the best resource, but there are reputable internet resources available. Avoid the tendency to simply accept a diagnosis or treatment without investigating the situation on your own or seeking other advice. You are the best person to know your own body. Ask questions and advocate for holistic health. A good health practitioner will want to understand and know the big picture of your health. God created our “whole” being. All of the parts of our bodies are meant to work together in a synergistic way, each part cooperating and collaborating with the other parts. Luke 10:27 states, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” This is a perfect verse for demonstrating how we are meant to be, not built with disconnected body parts, but with all of our parts working in synchronization.

Are Your Legs Ready For Summer? By: Michelle Turner Warm weather is finally here! If you wish your legs were free of spider or varicose veins, now is the time to schedule an appointment with the experts at Hamilton Vascular Center. Hamilton Vascular Center is led by vascular surgeons Michael Hartley, MD, and Hector Dourron, MD, who have vast experience in evaluating and treating vascular issues. This is extremely important when dealing with varicose veins, because the problems can be more than cosmetic. The good news is, with treatment, your legs can be ready for summer in as little as only one or two visits.

Spider Vein Removal How does laser treatment work? Spider veins are treated through a cosmetic laser that emits a prescribed dose of energy to the vein. The laser selectively targets the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. After treatment, the appearance of the vessel will be naturally reduced. How many treatments are required? Typically, only one or two treatments are required and results can be seen in three to four weeks. Treatment time usually varies between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated. Does treatment hurt? Laser treatment causes only minimal discomfort. Any redness or swelling is typically gone within a day. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

Additional Services In addition to spider vein removal and minimally invasive varicose vein removal, Hamilton Vascular Center offers laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is available for your face, underarms, legs, back, bikini line, and chest. Treatment takes approximately 5 to 30 minutes. Four or more sessions are typically suggested. The best news is, there is little to no discomfort and no downtime.

Hummus from Home by Evan Tyler Fox

I

was working out in northern Utah just above Salt Lake City. I was on my lunch break and had plans to meet up with a friend and grab a bite to eat. We met up, started catching up on small talk, and (I don’t remember exactly how it happened) the next thing I know he pulled out this small, round container and some tortilla chips and starts chowing down. It didn’t look quite like any dip I had seen before. My curiosity lead to questioning and upon further investigation I learned the name of this mysterious condiment – hummus. That was my first encounter with hummus, and though I didn’t know it at first, it definitely would not be my last. As a guy from small town Tennessee, it took me a time or two to eventually get warmed up to hummus. But, I must say, now it’s one of my go-to appetizer options, not only for its simplicity, but also for its nutritional qualities. You’re going to love this recipe; it’s perfect for parties, picnics, travels, or just plain, ole healthy comfort food. It can be used as a dip for veggies or crackers, as well as a spread on sandwiches or wraps. Enjoy!

Legacy

rowing up, I remember thinking how great my father was. How smart, how talented, how kind, how perfect he was. Being older now, and looking back, I think about him and realize he wasn’t perfect, but he was really close! When my three girls were young and growing up, I often remember thinking I wish I was as great a father as my father was. He set such a high standard of integrity, and raised such a high bar of character and love. What a legacy he left and what a name to try and live up to! Speaking of leaving a legacy, we find in Genesis 17, that God speaks to Abram and changes his name to Abraham. God also informs him that he will be a father of many nations, and that He would establish a covenant between Himself, Abraham, and his descendants. No difficulty living up to that standard and name, huh?! What could possibly go wrong there? Now, I know that Abraham’s life and decisions were far from perfect, however, we read later in scripture, that God calls Abraham His friend, and that he was highly recognized, recommended, and even renowned for his great faith. What seems to be an impossible standard to reach in men’s eyes, turns out to be a success in the eyes of the Lord. Speaking of high standards, imagine having to live up to the ultimate name of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God. That same name that causes storms to cease, makes demons tremble and flee, heals bodies and souls, and eventually brings every kingdom to its knees. Imagine trying to live to that standard, and live up to that name. Wow! Not just anyone could do that. It would take someone very special. Someone worthy of not only the calling, but worthy of the opportunity. The one referred to as the only begotten son of the Father. The one who humbled Himself and came to earth to be an example for us. And the one to whom the Father looked down upon and said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I

am well pleased” (Mark 1:11, NKJV). He was worthy, He is worthy, and He forever will be worthy, and He continues to live up to that name. And here is an awesome truth: so can you. You can live up to the name God has given you, the calling He has given you, and yes, even the opportunity He

has given you. No matter your history, good or bad. No matter your story, good or bad. No matter your training or lack thereof, good or bad, you can leave a great legacy, and you can live up to your great name! Jesus doesn’t look at your failures and disappointments, he looks at your potential and at what He sees as His finished product. So, be encouraged fathers, for although you are not perfect, you are considered a friend of our Heavenly Father, and worthy of all He has for you. Strive to be the great father your kids believe you are, and leave a legacy with them worth leaving, and they too will carry on your name!

Back in the car, Joseph rode in silence. As we entered the grocery store, however, he made an announcement. “I like him. I like the new preacher. Mama, did you see how he kept that grownup waiting so he could talk to me? I can’t wait until Sunday. I bet he tells good stories.”

He repeated each name as if logging it into his memory. Art invited me to take a seat. Rebecca, my youngest, crawled into my lap and Rachel leaned against me, her thumb in her mouth. While I chatted with the preacher, Joseph inspected the new furnishings. Each time I looked my son’s way, Art assured me, “He’s just fine, Mama.” A set of encyclopedias on a low shelf caught Joseph’s attention. The faces and symbols etched across the spines created an impressive collage of Americana. When my boy looked at the man behind the desk, Art went to kneel beside him. The preacher’s finger traced the faces of Washington, Lincoln, Twain, Sojourner Truth, and others. He spoke of their contributions to our country. Art removed a volume from the middle of the set. “When I take away a book, the picture isn’t complete anymore, is it, Joseph? Each face is necessary to tell the

Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

A

s many as one in three Americans experience spider veins and varicose veins. A common misconception we must often address at our practice is the myth that

spider veins are synonymous with varicose veins and that all varicose veins are “cosmetic”. This is simply not true. Although venous high pressure, defective valves within the veins and weak walls of the veins are responsible for both varicose veins and spider veins, this is where the similarities end. These disorders are two distinct medical conditions which require two distinct treatment protocols. Spider veins are cosmetic, varicose veins can be cosmetic or medical depending on severity and or symptoms. Spider veins have no effect on health, just appearance. Varicose veins can be associated with symptoms which affect health and limit

Varicose Vein Treatment

Contrary to popular fallacy, varicose veins are not

simply cosmetic and can lead to serious medical conditions. Varicose veins can be accompanied by symptoms such as pain, burning, fatigue, or tenderness. The number one cause for the symptoms of restless leg syndrome is varicose veins. Ranging from vein stripping surgery to laser vein ablation, a wide variety of varicose vein treatment exists. Most experienced vein surgeons strive to provide our patients with only minimally invasive techniques when possible: Endovenous laser ablation, Radiofrequency ablation closure, Glue closure and Mechanical venous abrasion with sclerotherapy. Varicose Veins
