Saying Good-Bye To Mom and Dad

She was my first friend. He was my protector. They were both my heroes: my mom and my dad. There are not enough words in the English dictionary to put into words the love I have for these two people, the love that has carried me through even after they left this world. My dad left me about 25 years ago, and although I am the middle child out of five, I was still called “Daddy’s baby.” I was that one: the one who got away with everything. He treasured us all, but I was the one who could do no wrong in his eyes.

When Dad left us all those years ago, my love for my mom grew even stronger as I watched her raise my baby sister all alone, and she did it with pride! She stood her ground when my sister would get out of line, and she raised her right. After my sister married and left home, I think the tables began to turn then. I more or less became the mom, and she became the daughter. She went with my husband and daughter and me on every vacation, every trip to the store, and every restaurant. My mom became not just my friend but my best friend. Over the years, she was there for me when I got married. She held me when I cried because I thought I would never have a baby and rejoiced with me on the day we found out I was going to indeed have a baby! She was there the day I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl. She was there when they flew my daughter to Atlanta when she was 12 months old, all the while praying that God would fix her heart. We rejoiced together the day my daughter’s heart came in and cried the same day for the family that lost a child.

So tell me, how? How did the tables turn so fast? How? How did we go from being best friends and having the time of our lives to being caretaker and patient? How did it happen that the day came that she looked at my 17-year-old daughter who she was with every single day of her life and not know who she was? My tears fell down like rain that day. How did she start seeing people in the room that only she could see? Were they really there? I may never know. And how? How did she leave me that day: July 23, 2019, at 3:20 a.m.? How did this happen so fast? How do you go on without them? It’s an age-old question. How do we live without our parents? The day I walked out of that hospital, I felt like I was nobody. Who did I belong to now? I was nobody’s daughter, and I said as much. And then someone wrote me and said, “Yes, you are someone’s daughter! You are a child of the King!” These words rang so true to me after 10 months of trying my best to try to figure out who I was without them. Yes, I am a mom and a wife, but who was I without the people who knew me since day one? Well, we pray and we ask God to give us guidance and assurance that we will see them again one day.

I’m not sure that I even know the answer still after all this time, but I have learned to take it one day at a time and let God lead me. So if you’re facing losing a parent today, just take a step back and remember the good days. Remember the fun places you went with them. Remember the long walks and talks that you had with them, and give God the glory for those days.
