By raising up a young man named Gideon, God transformed

men everywhere to be Warriors, not Worriers. He is challenging men to be Courageous, not Cowards. Gideon morphed in his faith in the Lord during a time when “there was no king in Israel and every man did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6). As a result, he went from being Vulnerable to Victorious. I. Gideon was a Vulnerable Worrier (Judges 6:11-21). Manasseh, one of the largest tribes in northern Israel at the time, had become the poorest of many. In an effort to hide the harvest from the ravaging Midianites, Gideon, along with his father Joash, was beating out wheat in the winepress in Ophrah. While doing so, the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and confronted him with a challenging task: “deliver Israel from the hand of Midian” (v.13). God called Gideon, whose name means “feller or hewer,” a “valiant warrior” (v. 12). Valiant warrior means bold, brave, and courageous champion. Sure, the statement seemed ridiculous to him because he was anything but a valiant warrior. In fact, he was a vulnerable worrier (cf. v. 13). At this point in his life, Gideon felt helpless, timid, and vulnerable. Just as Gideon was oppressed for seven long years, many men feel spiritually helpless, timid, and vulnerable to the oppression of sin in their lives. Consequently, they fail to maximize their potential for the Lord Jesus Christ. However, know this for sure: “God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27). As our Lord affirms, “Who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27). God specializes in turning vulnerable men into victorious men. II. Gideon was a Victorious Warrior (Judges 6:22-8:35).

Nevertheless, God had to deal with Gideon personally before He would use him to deliver others from enemy oppression. Gideon lived up to the calling of God on his life! What about you, men? What things are you hiding? Are you defeated by oppression and unconfessed sin in your life? Are you a vulnerable worrier? What strongholds are you struggling with? God can transform your life right now. He wants to deliver you personally before He uses you to deliver others from oppression and strongholds in their lives. When you give your whole heart to Jesus Christ and build an altar of worship to Him as Gideon did, nothing will be impossible for you. Like Gideon, you, too, will be well on your way to becoming a Valiant Victorious Warrior, a Mighty Man of Valor for the Lord Jesus Christ. For victory is in Jesus.

Lord and named it “The Lord is Peace,” i.e., Yahweh Shalom (Judges 6:24). The turning point in the narrative was when “the

A friend stated that the cap and gown “fit him well.” I thought about that comment, rolling it over in my mind for several days, considering all aspects and perspectives of it. Physically, the cap and gown absolutely fit him well. But beyond the outward appearance, beneath the fabric, and below the cap is where the true fit can be found. George was molded and fitted for Christ long before his birth. He was created with and for a purpose. Down syndrome didn’t change that. A quote by J.C. Ryle brings to mind the extent of what clothing can truly represent: “Never is a man…rightly clothed till he puts on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 13:14 states to “clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.” While caps and gowns represent the completion of 12 years of schoolwork and preparation for the future, “having on” the Lord Jesus Christ carries with it much furtherreaching ramifications extending to eternity. For George, graduation can be seen as a steppingstone on his ongoing Gospel-sharing journey. None of us can predict how God will use us to impact others. George’s path has guided him to surprising places and offered unanticipated

Innovative techniques produce shorter recovery times, less pain, and a quicker return to normal activities. Of those suffering from PAD, up to 3.5 million have progressed to critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe form of PAD, where the blood vessels become dangerously narrow and can lead to pain when resting, ulcers or sores, and gangrene. The risk for developing PAD rises with age and is highest for those over 50 years old. Smoking, the single greatest risk factor, increases the chance of developing PAD three to five times. Desire vs. Sacrifice verything starts in the mind: a thought or notion of how to obtain or achieve something greater than the current state. Whether it be financially, emotionally, mentally, or physically, everything begins in the infant stage of the thought process. Thoughts manifest over a duration of time, and for those thoughts to become tangible, DESIRE is awakened. I personally had a desire when I was 440 lb. to lose weight and become much healthier. My want/desire to lose the weight had all the ingredients it needed to begin my weight-loss journey. But there was one ingredient missing that I was not prepared for: SACRIFICE. This is the intangible that discourages most people who start a new journey to quit just a short time after they have started. That was me for many years because my mind had the desire to do something I’d never done, and it required a level of sacrifice that was not met in my heart. Sacrifice is a heart condition, and it requires daily action. Desire is a mental condition that is bred through multiple thoughts/ questions of what you want versus whether or not can you do it. Sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. I was 440 lb., and in 15 months, I lost 243 lb. My desire was to do the unexpected, and my sacrifice for the unexpected showcased my desire. My heart wanted to keep my old nutritional habits, but in order to fully achieve my desire, I had to let go of my wants and establish my new needs. The fight is real when it comes to keeping the desire you initiated in your mind. It is a daily, uphill battle, but Vince Lombardi said it best: “The harder you work, the hard it is for you to surrender.” People always say quitting isn’t an option when truthfully, it always is. But quitting is also a heart condition. Just like the story of the two wolves living inside of you, the one you feed is the one that will be dominant in your

24 // August 2020

everyday life. Will you feed the heart that always leans toward quitting? Or will you feed the heart that sacrifices for its desire to become tangible? Quitting is easy and fast, with no accountability for you. Sacrifice requires long and slow suffering for a cause that started with a personal desire and evolves into something much bigger than you. It instills a fire in you that will never cease and a legacy to pass on to your children. As I fought every day in my journey, I realized that I wasn’t just fighting for me. I was fighting for

others who did not have the tools I developed during my journey and who one day I would help. My faith in Jesus Christ is how I sustained my level of sacrifice: walking by faith and not by sight. Christ sacrificed Himself for all of us because God had a desire for His people. I did not know I would end up here; I just had faith that my daily sacrifices of habitual changes would lead me somewhere greater than I started. Remember, sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. About The Author

Saying Good-Bye To Mom and Dad he was my first friend. He was my protector. They were both my heroes: my mom and my dad. There are not enough words in the English dictionary to put into words the love I have for these two people, the love that has carried me through even after they left this world. My dad left me about 25 years ago, and although I am the middle child out of five, I was still called “Daddy’s baby.” I was that one: the one who got away with everything. He treasured us all, but I was the one who could do no wrong in his eyes.

When Dad left us all those years ago, my love for my mom grew even stronger as I watched her raise my baby sister all alone, and she did it with pride! She stood her ground when my sister would get out of line, and she raised her right. After my sister married and left home, I think the tables began to turn then. I more or less became the mom, and she became the daughter. She went with my husband and daughter and me on every vacation, every trip to the store, and every restaurant. My mom became not just my friend but my best friend. Over the years, she was there for me when I got married. She held me when I cried because I thought I would never have a baby and rejoiced with me on the day we found out I was going to indeed have a baby! She was there the day I gave birth to my beautiful

32 // August 2020

baby girl. She was there when they flew my daughter to Atlanta when she was 12 months old, all the while praying that God would fix her heart. We rejoiced together the day my daughter’s heart came in and cried the same day for the family that lost a child. So tell me, how? How did the tables turn so fast? How? How did we go from being best friends and having the time of our lives to being caretaker and patient? How did it happen that the day came that she looked at my 17-year-old daughter who she was with every single day of her life and not know who she was? My tears fell down like rain that day. How did she start seeing people in the room that only she could see? Were they really there? I may never know. And how? How did she leave me that day: July 23, 2019, at 3:20 a.m.? How did this happen so fast? How do you go on without them? It’s an age-old question. How do we live without our parents? The day I walked out of that hospital, I felt like I was nobody. Who did I belong to now? I was nobody’s daughter, and I said as much. And then someone wrote me and said, “Yes, you are someone’s daughter! You are a child of the King!” These words rang so true to me after 10 months of trying my best to try to figure out who I was without them. Yes, I am a mom and a wife, but who was I without the people who knew me since day one? Well, we pray and we ask God to give us guidance and assurance that we will see them again one day. I’m not sure that I even know the answer still after all this time, but I have learned to take it one day at a time and let God lead me. So if you’re facing losing a parent today, just take a step back and remember the good days. Remember the fun places you went with them. Remember the long walks and talks that you had with them, and give God the glory for those days. About The Author

Flicko’s Video Services

y wife Kim and I started Flicko’s Video Services in Chattanooga/Fort Oglethorpe in November of 2004. Our primary business is transferring video (VHS,

Camcorder, Betamax, Umatic, memory cards, HD, and cell phone), 8mm and 16mm film, audio, picture/slide conversions, duplications, and video editing. One of our goals was to own a business that would be a part of the community and help support it in some fashion. In order to do so, we got involved in the school districts by becoming business partners with Boynton Elementary and Heritage. We’ve helped the Catoosa County Sheriff’s department, Teen Maze, Untapped Potential, and many other organizations with video projects and sponsorships. We expanded outside of our storefront to include filming on location for events such as school plays, band concerts, graduations, corporate and sporting events, banquet videos, weddings, and much more. We wanted to supply these organizations with great-quality videos at an affordable cost.

No other transfer service/business allows the customization that we do, and no one is quicker than us in delivering the final product. We always look to exceed our customers’ expectations and rely on word of mouth to carry our reputation forward into the community. What separates us from our competition? We do it the way our customers want it: total customization. Other businesses do it the way they want to. You have to conform to them. We combine VHS/Camcorder tapes to a single DVD (up to two hours’ worth of video). All the competitors allow is a single tape to a single DVD. No exceptions. We turn all projects around in a week or less, and most of the time, it takes just a day or two. The competition takes four to six weeks or longer. Our prices are competitive, and most of the time, we beat their prices on similar services. We offer video filming services at an affordable rate and FREE filming for many school events.

We were originally named “Flicko’s Video Workshops.” The original concept of Flicko’s was to create a place where people could come and work on their own projects. They could do things like scan their own pictures and slides, do video editing, and create a final project just the way they wanted it. Around 2006, we changed the name to “Flicko’s Video Services.” We still offer customers the opportunity to rent out work stations at an hourly rate to work on their projects; however, we found that most people were not interested in doing so and would rather just drop off their projects and have us complete it. Our mission is to provide our customers with the bestquality product, at a good price, done just the way they want it, and to turn their project around in the quickest time possible.

34 // August 2020

Other video transfer businesses do not allow customers to walk in and only accept mail-ins. At Flicko’s Video Service, you can mail it or come on in. We’ll even make you a cup of coffee. The best part about my job is sharing with customers. When you come in, it’s like going down memory lane. When you look around, you’ll probably see an old camera or 8mm film projector that will remind you of the one that dad used to have. Every customer of ours has a story and a precious moment in time that they are looking to relive. By the time they leave, we feel like we’ve made another friend. We don’t take it lightly and know how important it is to get their project right and protect it until we see them again. It’s the most rewarding job I could ever have, and I certainly thank all the customers who have entrusted us with their most precious memories over the past 15 years.

Gò0dNews for Everyone

Covered in His Feathers 020 started with my dad beginning chemo treatments and my oldest daughter fighting pneumonia (which included a hospital stay). My nerves were on edge, and my anxiety was HIGH. So why not add a global pandemic on top of all that, right? I’ll admit that in early March, when the Coronavirus arrived in Rome, I was a nervous wreck. I knew I was feeling anxiety that I’d never felt before. I also KNEW it was time to heavily rely on my faith. On Wednesday, March 11, I looked through the variety of the podcasts in my phone, praying to find one that would speak directly to what I was feeling. I can’t remember the title to the one I found, but I do recall it was about relying on the Lord when you feel scared. The Scripture passage for this episode was Psalm 91. It wasn’t a passage I’d studied in the past. I couldn’t recall ever hearing about what verse 4 says: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” The study leader told the story about how her teenage daughter was involved in a scary car accident and how this woman was hours away from her daughter. All she could do was pray for her until she could get to her. Specifically, she prayed for the Lord to “cover” her daughter. Her daughter thankfully walked away without being seriously hurt. This woman’s friend told her that she had come upon the accident not long after it had happened. She walked up to the scene because she recognized the car. This friend recalled thinking, “There’s no way this will go well.” And then, at her feet, right next to the driver’s door—was a feather. I had chills when I heard this. Back to that week. When I got home that Wednesday, I received a text from someone in whom I’d confided my fears. It read, “The Lord wanted me to share this with you. Hold on to the words of Psalm 91.” Chills! Two days later was Friday, March 13, the day I was sent home to work like many others. That morning, I prayed Psalm 91 over and over. I don’t recall what brought this song to mind, but I pulled up “You Cover Me” by Prestonwood Choir and

38 // August 2020

listened to it that morning. The song is taken straight from Psalm 91! It was maybe the second time I’d ever heard it, but the Lord brought it to me that morning. That night, the atmosphere was very strange with everything happening and the heightened sense of nervousness all around. I opened my Bible to Psalm 91 and left it open to that passage for weeks. My husband noticed it and asked me, “Do you not know what’s on my arm?” He raised his sleeve to show me a tattoo I knew was there—a male angel with very large wings. I thought, “So what, I’ve seen it before.” But then, I noticed the writing above his tattoo. Chills covered my arms and tears filled my eyes because I knew then all these

little things were no coincidence. Our sweet Heavenly Father was reaching down to me, some worried mama in Rome, Georgia. Right above my husband’s tattoo was, “Psalm 91.” I knew the Lord was telling me, “I’m covering you.” How precious it is to know that our God, who is hearing MILLIONS of prayers at the same time, especially during times of chaos and uncertainty, reached down to remind me, “I will COVER you.” Don’t ever think He isn’t listening to you, that He’s not hearing you. Just be sure that you are ready to hear Him when He speaks.

Easy-Peasy Fruit Salad Recipe by Pam Wattenbarger

T

his is an easy, versatile fruit salad with a 10-minute prep time. The pudding mix will blend with the fruit juices to create a sweet, creamy base that enhances the flavor of the fruit. Naturally glutenfree, it’s the perfect recipe for summer when fresh fruits are in season. Don’t like strawberries or peaches? Substitute your favorite fruit instead. Good substitutions are blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.

Ingredients • 4 peaches, peeled and cubed • 1 (16-ounce) container of strawberries, washed, stems removed, and sliced • 3 bananas, peeled and sliced

1. In a medium bowl, mix the peaches, strawberries, and bananas together gently. 2. Stir in the instant vanilla pudding mix until the fruit mixture is coated. 3. Refrigerate until serving. This is best made an hour in advance to allow the flavors to meld.
