ummer is almost over, and it’s time for those back to school days which can bring excitement, endless possibilities, but also anxieties. Are you prepared? If you’re not sure how to cope with pressures of a new school year, the answer is easy. Bring your relationship with Jesus to school with you.

Understanding how to take God with you in the classroom will guard and protect you. For example, if a classmate bullies you, what action would you choose? What is the right thing to do if you thought about cheating on a test? Have you intentionally borrowed someone’s pencil and not returned it? With Jesus by your side, you will not want to make bad choices in school.

At school, students take classes to teach them all they will need to live, work, and function in God’s world. The first page of the Bible tells how God made a divine world. David wrote in a Psalm that the Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.

As His children, our challenge is to identify our talents to become the person God created us to be. Don’t doubt what God says about you and has given to you. Pursue your work at school and home with excellence. Study hard, because God can use it to put you in the perfect workplace someday. He has big plans for you.

Students should cover themselves from head to toe with God’s armor. He provides six weapons to help us stand firm against the enemy. Put on His belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and

the shoes of peace, along with a shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and don’t forget the sword ─ the word of God. Recite these three scriptures before going to school to stay close to Jesus.

1) “Today is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”(Psalm 118:24) Each day is a precious gift. Use it wisely. Do not waste time worrying.

2) “I am the LORD your God. I will be with you everywhere you go.” (Joshua 1:9) God is with you every day, everywhere!

3) “Finally, be strong in the LORD and in His mighty power.”(Ephesians 6:10) Be strong and brave, and you will have success.

Keep God’s commands in school. Jesus tells us not to let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths. That means no gossiping. No bad language. Instead, use your words to pray for those who have bad things to say. God is at work not only in your life but through dedicated teachers, staff workers, and committed parents who want to give students a future with hope. Because God loves you so much, He’s put good people in your path to help you and see to it that you succeed.

Remember to take your anxieties, cares, and accomplishments to the Lord. He promises to equip us with everything we need for doing His will.

am a planner. Some of my family members might kindly refer to it as overly compulsive about what I want to accomplish in a given time frame and with limited resources, but I call it being prepared for life – complicated, unexpected, messy, wonderful life. I believe my profession as a financial planner is a result of this compulsiveness as well as a desire to help others, but mostly due to the influence of my two fathers – my earthly father and my Heavenly Father.

My earthly father, “Daddy”, taught me repeatedly about the value of hard work, that “money does not grow on trees”, and to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. My Heavenly Father has patiently taught me from His Word and with His still quiet voice that it is not all about me and that He is the author and owner of it all – a lifelong lesson that is not easy for the rebellious child in me.

It is natural to think of our money selfishly. “What plans should I make with my money?” However, He supernaturally allows us to be stewards of what He gives us. It is actually freeing and humbling to realize our Father gives 100%, requires us to give back only 10% to His work, and then gives us the privilege of managing the other 90% to take care of our needs, those of our family, and then be a blessing with the rest! As a financial planner, I try to teach a few principles and practical steps that will help us all do just that.

Start where you are! Examine your current budget and work toward spending less than you make. As a result, when you have a surplus, begin paying off any credit cards and debt you may have accumulated. Maybe you can only start with $25 a month. Then start with $25 a month! Be consistent and when you get a raise or pay off a debt, begin to save toward an emergency fund, retirement, and then your goals.

If you are saving for retirement or a health plan, you may be able to have it deducted from your paycheck and enjoy tax-deferred savings in addition to compound interest!

If your employer matches a portion of contributions, then time and compounding work even more in your

The choice is up to you. You can pay someone else interest through acquiring debt or you can pay yourself the interest while investing toward your goals.

If you are new to investing, a good place to start might be with a mutual fund. I recommend making

consistent monthly investments which takes advantage of ups and downs in the market, buying more shares at lower prices which can give you a better return in the long run. Diversify as your savings increase.

Your God-given goal may be going back to college to pursue a new profession, starting your own business, working for a non-profit, adopting a child, or giving to the needs in your community and around the world.

Recognizing that God is the owner and we are the stewards is the most important money truth for all of us.

This much is certain – you cannot take your money with you; but you can use it to impact eternity! Be thankful!

Be generous! And let’s make a difference with what our Father has blessed us with.

I closed my eyes and thought of the nothingness, the blackness, the emptiness of death. I was afraid.”

“Then one summer night, sitting in the dark, filled with the fear of death, I invited Jesus Christ into my life. I asked him to forgive me and save me. From that moment I no longer felt afraid. Surprises hile sitting and playing with my seven month old son, Gabriel, in the splash park, my husband, Andrew, brought me an ice cream cone. I was delighted, but knowing that he would want it all for himself, I was secretly thinking to myself, “I sure hope Gabriel does not look up and see it.” He has just been introduced to food and he is enjoying experiencing this new world of solid foods.

As I sat watching him playing in the water mesmerized by all the sprayers and kids jumping in the splash zone, I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me.

He reminded me of all the times that we, as children of God, get distracted by everything vying for our attention that we don’t take the time to lift up our eyes from the current circumstances of life to see what God is holding in His hand for us.

Especially as the roles that we, as women, have in our daily responsibilities, it is easy to become so

consumed with meeting everyone else’s needs around us that we are distracted from pursuing the heart of the Father and listening for the sweet voice of the Holy Spirit.

I know for me, being mom to two kids, wife to my husband, co-pastor to a thriving church, and owning my own travel business, it is very easy to start looking at everything that needs to be done and become lost in the commotion. My mother always has said “Don’t worry about the gnats, while the elephants are stampeding.” I often have to remind myself of this. It is so easy to find myself swatting at the gnats while the truly important thing is losing my focus.

My husband always says, “What you stare at the longest becomes strongest in your life.” He is referring to vision. We are called to be a people of vision. If we are constantly looking at the gnats or the water sprayers, in Gabriel’s case, we lose sight of God and the promises that He has made us. I went and lifted my sons face to see the ice cream and his face lit up and his little legs started kicking. It was a surprise from Parent to Child. That is what God has for us.

A few weeks ago my husband released a Word on Facebook, “Get ready for a surprise from the Father.” We received that from the Holy Spirit and have been actively looking for God’s surprises. We have seen God do so many things, since we raised our expectation level, and got our focus off of the distractions of life.

Today I want to encourage you to reserve your gaze for Jesus alone. When we put our eyes on Him, everything else begins to fall in order. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help; my help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” Lift up your eyes today; it is your time to receive surprises from the Father.

Teaching Our Children to Pray Through the Storms of Life

e are in a terrible storm. Please pray,” the late night text read. I immediately turned off the TV and prayed for my daughter and her husband who were already tired from hours of driving. As strong winds rocked their vehicle side to side, rain and hail fell, and a tree had fallen across the interstate blocking two lanes, she had been scared, but knew to ask for God to protect them.

What do people do when they can’t turn to the Lord in a storm in their life? God gives us so much peace when we have Him in our life. I was thankful my daughter knew to call on God. I was thankful she knew I’d pray. How do we teach our children confidence in God? How do we teach them to pray?

In our own home, we had prayer before meals. At bedtime, we read stories from a Bible Story book then knelt in front of our couch, in a row, and we prayed together. As the children got older we read from the Bible, then prayed. I grew up with that. My memory takes me back as far as fourth grade when we sat together at night and read silently from our Bibles, then knelt and prayed.

Looking back I remember teaching a four year old class on Sunday evenings to pray. We began learning by my praying a few words and I’d have the children repeat after me. Later we said “Thank you God for....” and each added what they were thankful for. Still later we all went around the group and prayed one sentence.

A few years later when I had these children again, those who had learned to pray as four year olds, would pray in class but those who hadn’t been taught to pray just sat there. The children I work with in Sunday school today are learning that prayer is talking to God, thanking him for specific things and asking for help in areas of need and for those sick.

When a now-college-aged granddaughter was five, we were about to eat. She wanted to say the blessing.

She began praying, then stopped, looked around the kitchen and asked, “Who are we praying for today?” At her house, a kitchen bulletin board had pictures of missionaries that they took turns praying for, a different family each day.

You can teach your child to pray at an early age. By example is best. I encourage you to get an age appropriate Bible Story book and read to your children each evening at bedtime, then pray together. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray and we have his instruction in Matthew 6, beginning with verse 9.

We all have storms of different kinds in our lives.

We can always turn to God in these times of storms. We can also teach our children how to call on God when there are storms in their lives, then thank him for our sunny days.

Circle of Life

ircle of Life. These three words bring to mind a Disney movie that teaches us that life and death go hand in hand. It teaches us that life’s journey includes death. The reality is in our life’s journey, we wake up every day to a new beginning.

Our fears or challenges can easily be overcome. Tomorrow there is always hope for a better day. But the process of death or saying goodbye to a loved one is a journey no one is ever prepared for.

Tomorrow can seem like an eternity or it may never come at all. It is confusing and painful for everyone involved. How do you prepare for that?

Three local community members wondered the same thing. Dr. David Lovell, Stephanie Lovell Harbour and Andrew Nall, RN owned a personal care home and saw firsthand the

services provided to the seniors they cared for. “We just believed we could do the basics better,” states Stephanie.

They were frustrated and felt their patients along with their families, deserved to be treated with more dignity and respect. They wanted to be able to prepare their patients for this journey by providing them with a team of professionals that would meet their needs physically, spiritually and emotionally. “The goal was to care for our patients like they were family” says Dr. Lovell, “and I think we accomplish that each and every day.” In 2010 the decision was made to offer the community where they lived hospice services.

In October 2017 they expanded their services to the Ft. Oglethorpe and surrounding area. The office is located

at 4966 Battlefield Parkway in Ringgold.

You may see one of the Tapestry Hospice vehicles at a neighbor’s home or at a local Assisted Living Facility.

Tapestry is able to meet you where you are at this time in your life.

Tapestry’s motto is “making life easier, when it matters most.” This is what they believe and live every day – helping patients and their families navigate this end of life journey with love and compassion.

What makes a difference is the team that serves this community, lives in the community. “Tapestry’s greatest strength is our staff of caregivers” says executive administrator, Leigh Critton.

Their understanding, compassion and professionalism will give you the

peace and confidence you desire while making difficult decisions for your loved one.

Another difference is that they are locally owned and operated, so decisions about care or assistance are made every-day in the office, not by calling a corporate office or far removed manager. “The whole staff from the office to the field seem to have a “calling” to do this work and act as a team,” states Andy Nall, RN Owner.

When should a decision be made about entering a hospice program? At any time during a life-limiting illness, it is appropriate to discuss the patient’s care options, including hospice. The Tapestry staff members are highly sensitive to the many questions and concerns that the family is faced with.

How is this care paid for? Is it covered by insurance? Hospice coverage is widely available. It is provided by Medicare nationwide,

by Medicaid and by most private health insurance policies. A Tapestry team member can check with your health insurance provider to be sure of coverage.

If you are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, cancer, cardiac disease, ALS, kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, dementia, Parkinson’s, pulmonary disease, stroke, coma, or liver disease, you may qualify for hospice care. The benefits of hospice care include but are not limited to physician care, registered nurse visits, 24/7 hospice team on call, certified nursing assistants, dietary consult, trained volunteers, spiritual counseling, aggressive pain management and so much more.

In addition, hospice will provide medications, supplies and equipment as appropriate.

You can also become involved in this compassionate journey by volunteering your time and or talents to the people of your community. You can sit with families or patients, read, play games or just be there for support.

Maybe a patient may need their grass cut or anything that would make life easier for them. You can volunteer as an individual or as a group. If you are interested, just call and ask for the Volunteer Coordinator, Heather Smith and she can walk you through the

steps. Heather says “Tapestry would love to have you as a volunteer. Volunteers are an integral part of the team. They enhance the quality of life for the patients and our staff in so many ways. They provide compassionate support to both the patient and the family members. The importance of our volunteers cannot be overstated.”

believe having a sacred space in one’s home is an essential component of having a vibrant prayer life. It’s also an ancient Christian practice. Going back to the earliest days of our faith, believers actually used to gather in private residences—there were no church buildings as we know them now for the first few centuries of the faith. Archaeologists have discovered altars built in Christian homes where believers would gather on the Lord’s Day to worship and celebrate communion. For people who lived during those times it would not be uncommon to say prayers at those same altar places throughout the week.

This was the context in which much of the New Testament was written. When the Apostle Paul addressed believers, he was talking to Christians who would have had sacred space set up in their homes.

When Christianity became legalized and no longer had to stay hidden in homes, glorious formal church buildings were constructed almost overnight. This did not, however, mean that Christians tore out the private altars in their homes and ceased having dedicated spaces in their houses for the worship of God. Instead, believers kept their altars and went to their separate church buildings. This practice has continued down to our times with many Catholic and especially Orthodox believers maintaining dedicated sacred space in their homes (both churches encourage it strongly, in fact). These spaces are always set up

intentionally—they often occupy a nook or corner of the house and come complete with sacred art and crosses on the wall, small tables set up with candles, colored cloth, and prayer books, and sometimes one even finds kneelers or prayer rugs to lie prostrate on.

This kind of decor may not suit the fancy of everyone reading this article, but we should recognize sacred space in the homes of believers was a practice of the early Church that turned the world upside down. We would do well to emulate them!

For us, this may mean clearing out a closet and storing stuff elsewhere so we can have a tiny private room to pray in. It may mean putting a desk or kneeler in some place off the most beaten paths of our homes. Wherever we set it up, it should be sacred and have the accessories required for prayer. Bibles, candles, journals, prayer books, etc., can go in such spaces. Decorate your space with a cross if that is helpful to you. Make a list of prayer topics/requests and post it to a bulletin board—put up whatever physical prompts you find helpful for your prayer life. Regardless, the space should say one thing to you: Christ is the welcome and precious guest of your home, and this is the place where you will meet Him. Lord willing, you will start to notice a difference in the peace of your home as it becomes a place of regular prayer and worship to the Lord.

Iron Sharpens Iron

exercise is not a lot of fun. Therefore, it sure is hard to consistently get out there and get those steps in. That’s

especially true here in the south where the heat is just one more easy excuse to take the day off. Whether you walk, run, bike, or work out in a gym, staying motivated enough to “just do it” is one of the biggest obstacles we all face when it comes to getting the exercise we need to be fit. There is one thing might help that I learned in one of the very first Exercise Science classes I took in college. Exercise with a friend.

There are many benefits to having an exercise partner. Two of the best are: 1. Exercising with someone else makes it more enjoyable.

Anything that is fun you will do more often. (By the way you can have more than one fitness friend. The more the merrier.)

2. You’ll exercise even when you really don’t want to.

When someone else is counting on us, we feel like we almost have to. That’s pretty good motivation.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 27:12, “Iron sharpens iron so one person sharpens another.” Sounds like we can use that advice to keep us looking sharp.

I know that I used the words “looking sharp” when referring to being fit I should clarify that I don’t believe that being “fit” is synonymous with being thin. Being fit can come in all shapes and sizes (so does looking sharp). Being fit is about being healthy and having enough energy to get through your daily tasks without feeling exhausted.

If you already have a fitness friend, then good for you.

Don’t forget to thank them and tell them how sharp they are looking. If you don’t have that partner but want to find one, can I give you couple of suggestions about the kind of person you should look for? One thing that is very important is finding someone who is positive. If you’re going to be spending time with them you really need someone that is going to not only help you exercise more, but also make you a better person. Not to mention, a “negative Nelly” is most likely going to make you want to exercise less not more. Then you’re defeating one of the purposes of finding an exercise partner. Proverbs 12:26 says “There is one who speaks like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.” So choose an exercise buddy who is going to speak life into you and do the same for them.

Another thing to look for in a fitness friend is someone who is a God chaser. If you can find that kind of a partner your exercise time is also going to include some good conversations about the things that matter most. When you’re having those God conversations and even lifting up His name in prayer and praise you will be getting some awesome spiritual “iron sharpening” as well. Why not chase after God while you’re chasing a healthier you. Nothing like getting two birds with one stone or in this case one iron wet-stone.

Amazing Grace s believers, we all know the song "Amazing Grace". As we sing this song, the warmth of God's love touches our hearts and brings tears to our eyes. I have been thinking about my journey as a Christian. There has been much joy and peace, but also much sorrow and turbulence. How

did I make it for 40 years? Married, two children, and a mother-in-law to take care of. Then, came a divorce, years of court proceedings and raising two children alone. The children became adults and had their own families. Many problems accompanied them, and as a mother and an intercessor, I was up many nights burning the midnight oil for them.

Battles do rage and I suffered tremendous hurt, but I kept praying.

Health and financial problems for me were not welcome, but they came, and God proved His faithfulness over and over again. With each problem, God's Amazing Grace led me through.

The author of the song. Amazing Grace, was John Newton. He was a former slave trader. John was the child of a stern sea captain, who all but raised him on the sea. If my facts are straight, John was in the British army, although not by choice and he was extremely reckless. It is recorded, that on one of his voyages, a fierce storm nearly sank his ship.

John prayed to God and his ship survived. He later became an Anglican priest and in 1772 he wrote the song Amazing Grace.

When we call out to God in our storms, His Amazing Grace abounds. I believe sometimes, God must think "I hear Mary again, I better send the grace". When I read about the slave trading, beatings, and near death storms at sea, that John Newton went through, we can compare them to the storms in our own lives. The history of this song was such an encouragement to me.

God is wonderful and full of grace and favor and always providing his loving kindness.
