Historie Gagelstraat 107 is tezamen met Gagelstraat 109 en Willemstraat 108 gevestigd in de voormalige sigarenfabriek Gomarus (aanbesteed in 1902) van Norbert van Reuth. Deze fabriek was operationeel van 1903 tot 1934. Dit gemeentelijk monument is een zeldzaam voorbeeld van de industrialisatie van Eindhoven. Karakteristiek zijn de vormgeving en ligging. Bijzonder fraai zijn de getoogde ramen, de segmentbogen boven ramen en deuren, het mansardedak met eronder het beeldbepalende metselwerk in muizentand. De sigarenindustrie domineerde in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw, de Eindhovense economie en kort voor de eeuwwisseling verdiende ruim een vijfde deel van de bijna vijfduizend inwoners er de kost mee. Ondanks de opkomst van Philips en de toename van de arbeidskosten die dit indirect veroorzaakte, wist de sector zich in de daaropvolgende decennia nog vrij goed te handhaven, al trad er wel een concentratieproces op ten koste van de kleine ondernemers. Bovendien verspreidde de sigarenindustrie zich in zuidelijke richting over de Kempen naar plaatsen als Valkenswaard en Bergeijk. Met name in Valkenswaard zijn er naar schatting zo’n zestig sigarenfabriekjes geweest, waarnaast ook nog honderden mensen actief waren in de huisnijverheid. De bekendste ondernemer was Hendrik Kersten, oprichter van het sigarenmerk Willem II. In het kielzog van de sigarenindustrie kwamen ook toeleveringsbedrijven voor papier, lucifers (Mennen & Kuenen, 1870) en kistjes (Picus, 1883) tot ontwikkeling.

History Gagelstraat 107, along with Gagelstraat 109 and Willemstraat 108, is situated in the former Gomarus cigar factory, commissioned in 1902 by Norbert van Reuth. This factory operated from 1903 until 1934. This municipal monument stands as a rare example of Eindhoven’s industrialization. Characteristic features include its design and location. Particularly striking are the arched windows, segmental arches above windows and doors, the mansard roof with distinctive herringbone masonry beneath. In the late nineteenth century, the cigar industry dominated the economy of Eindhoven, with nearly one-fifth of its almost five thousand inhabitants employed in the trade shortly before the turn of the century. Despite the rise of Philips and the subsequent increase in labor costs indirectly caused by it, the sector managed to sustain itself reasonably well in the following decades, albeit with a concentration process that marginalized smaller businesses. Additionally, the cigar industry spread southwards into the Kempen region, reaching places like Valkenswaard and Bergeijk. Valkenswaard alone housed an estimated sixty cigar factories, alongside hundreds more involved in cottage industry. The most renowned entrepreneur was Hendrik Kersten, founder of the Willem II cigar brand. Supporting industries for paper, matches (Mennen & Kuenen, 1870), and boxes (Picus, 1883) also flourished alongside the cigar industry.h floors can be removed for other functions and layout.
