ANNUAL REPORT 2023

HELPING CHILDREN EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

A Message From the CEO Dear Friends,

Board of Directors

The year 2023 has officially been deemed one of the most challenging years for Catie’s Closet.

Anne-Marie Sousa

We were met with levels of need never before seen in our organization’s history. More children and families in our communities experienced poverty and homelessness than ever before, which resulted in an increased dependency on our programs and services.

Board President & Founder The Arbors at Dracut

Laura Bisson Co-Founder UnitedHealth Group

New Corporate Headquarters Location

Our work was more essential than ever, and the demand was more than we could’ve ever imagined. Use of our In-School Closet Program and SOS Urgent Response Program tripled. In the fall, we had to halt all new urgent orders as our team worked tirelessly to fill orders for 1,000 children on our waitlist. Despite all of this, we still managed to open 12 new closets and serve 90,000 students. We carefully stewarded monetary donations to meet children’s most immediate needs and put all hands on deck to quickly process and distribute in-kind donations.

Lynne Baril Co-Founder Circle Health

While we still feel the effects of these challenges as we head into a new year, we also feel an immense amount of gratitude for our amazing supporters who continue to step up and answer our calls for help.

Rebecca Gilding State Street

With unwavering support from individuals and organizations across the communities we serve, we remain steadfast in our mission to break down barriers to education for youth in need.

Melissa Herman Login VSI

Vicor Corporation

We promise to be with students every step of the way. Whether they need help one time or throughout their entire school journey, we are committed to walking alongside them, meeting their basic needs so they have the confidence to thrive in school and life.

Jodie Payette Deloitte Consulting

Our vision is that every child can access the essentials that foster physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It’s because of our supporters that we can work to make this vision a reality for thousands of more children in need.

Katie Belanger, CPA

I invite you to read the rest of this report for an in-depth look at the year behind us and all that’s ahead for Catie’s Closet.

Our Programs Our Mission Catie’s Closet gives children in need life-changing access to clothing and basic necessities so they can thrive in school and in life.

In-School Closets Our In-School Closet Program provides students in grades preK-12 the opportunity to shop for clothing and other basic items during school hours as often as they need. Each Closet is designed to be a bright, welcoming, and safe place students can rely on consistently. The Closets are stocked with donations as well as direct purchases. Donated goods are sorted and stored in our regional distribution centers, and re-stock orders are submitted regularly by volunteers at each school. We aim to provide students with in-style clothing that will make them feel proud, confident, and empowered to express themselves.

Success Stories “Catie’s Closet provides a safety net for our students. Whether it's due to their socioeconomic status, day-to-day needs that arise during school, or just helping them to feel more comfortable, students know that Catie's Closet is there for them.“ “I just went down to the closet yesterday with a student who was removed from her mom a week ago due to neglect. She was sent to school in a tank top that was too small and not warm enough for the weather. Without embarrassment I was able to say, ’I bet you’d love to pick out a shirt that you love!’ She was able to sort through several options on hangers (like she was at a store), pick one she loved, and twirl in front of the mirror in all smiles! What this does for a student’s confidence, self-esteem, and experience of school as safe and supportive is invaluable. Thank you on behalf of our students and families.”

“Catie’s closet is the highlight of my students’ month. They are brand new to the country, and they had to leave everything behind. Having their own things again is crucial to helping them feel normal and at home again. They also come without weather appropriate clothing, so we visit at the start of every season change.”

Because, it's so much ANNUAL REPORT 2023 more than clothes

Hundreds of students have received items from Catie’s Closet throughout the year. This has alleviated some families’ stressors on finding uniforms or other items needed for school. We've built family relationships by being able to collaborate with them on getting kids to school and making sure they have what they need when they arrive. Students love being able to choose items themselves and “go shopping” in the closet; it gives them a sense of independence and pride.

I truly cannot speak to one student. Catie’s Closet has helped our children and families immensely in some of their most difficult times, including homelessness, fire, poverty, one parent households, and even two parent households struggling to make ends meet. A huge thank you to Catie’s Closet for all of the hard work they put into what it is and what it means to our families. There’s a very happy 7th grader who is wearing new sneakers at Parthum today. She’s mostly non-verbal, but repeatedly said “Thank you!” with a huge smile on her face, followed by fist bumps. This is the first time we’ve witnessed such joy first hand at Catie’s Closet. Just so uplifting! We feel so lucky to have Catie's closet in our school. The kids call it the magic place. It is really a magical place for our students. Catie’s Closet has vastly improved the culture of our school. It has brought staff, students, and families together as a community. It has helped to build connection within our school community and to increase the well-being of our students.

What’s Ahead in 2024 Creating a Confident Nation, One Confident Student at a Time. Over the last 13 years, we’ve witnessed students’ transformations that are only made possible when they have what they need to show up and shine every day. The changes that take place are long-lasting in a child’s life and far-reaching within and outside their communities. It just takes one confident student to create a confident school, a confident community, a confident state, and a confident nation. It’s a ripple effect powered by immediate access to clothing and basic necessities and is the driving force for Catie’s Closet’s work in 2024.

“I have been a school nurse for close to 30 years. Since it arrived I have seen Catie's Closet bring comfort, cleanliness, and confidence to our children. It has filled a big gap. It is a resource that I turn to time and time again. It is a clean change of clothes for the little ones who have been sick or had an 'accident'. It is comfort for the child who comes to school wearing shorts in the winter or sweats when the temperature is 80+ degrees. It is comfort for the child who is wearing pants that no longer button. It is a warm jacket and boots rather than a sweater when it is snowing. It brings a smile and pride to the child who was wearing soiled clothing. It is a pretty ponytail to the little one who didn't get her hair brushed. It is an expression of love and care. I know that Catie's Closet was created in memory of your beautiful daughter who you lost way too early. I am sorry for your great loss. I think it is such a loving, lasting, and compassionate way to celebrate her life. She must be so proud of the generous efforts you have made on behalf of all children.” Thank you very much.
