5 Incredible Eucharistic Miracles From The Last 25 Years As Catholics, we believe that the bread and wine used in the Mass become the body and blood of Christ.

Theology and scripture put aside, some of the most compelling pieces of evidence are when the Eucharist has quite literally changed into Jesus’ body and blood. It’s happened throughout history but as we can often be sceptical of events that happened long ago here we have compiled a list of Eucharist miracles, all of which happened in the last 25 years!

1) Argentina 1992, 1994, 1996 Where: The parish of Saint Mary in Buenos Aires What happened: While both other miracles are definitely worth finding out about, the most interesting and comprehensive study was done with the 1996 Eucharist. It began bleeding when consecrated and part of it became human tissue. After several intense studies, it was found that the tissue was part of a heart, a muscle of the myocardium, the left ventricle, the muscle that gives life to the whole heart and body.

The tissue revealed further that it belonged to a person who had gone through intense pain, experiencing extended periods of time where he could barely breathe, had immense strain put on the heart (both common feature of crucifixion) and

had been stabbed in the left side.

What was most insane was that despite the fact this should have killed the person, the tissue showed signs of being ‘alive’.

results were eventually published in 2013. The reddish substance analysed in the host was indeed blood in which there was DNA and haemoglobins of human origin.

This was evidenced by intact white blood cells being found in the tissue. This showed the heart sample was pulsating as elsewise the white blood cells would have disintegrated roughly 15 minutes outside of a living body.

Two studies conducted by eminent forensic experts using different methods both showed that blood came from inside the host; this showed that it wasn’t possible that the blood was placed on the host from an outside source. The blood type was AB positive, the same type as found in other Eucharistic miracles and the Holy Shroud of Turin. A microscopic analysis of the blood in 2010 showed that since 2006 much of the blood visible had coagulated (as expected) but that underlying internal layers contained the presence of fresh blood which showed that the Eucharist was still bleeding.

Interesting fact: The Archbishop who commissioned the research was none other than the now Pope Francis!

2) Mexico 2006 Where: The Parish of Saint Martin of Tours in Tixtla When: 21 October 2006 What Happened: During a Mass in a parish retreat, a host that was about to be distributed was effusing a reddish substance. The diocese decided to conduct extensive scientific study of the host to discern its cause, origin and ensure there was no hoax being played.

The human tissue found in the host was living, evidenced by intact white and red blood cells and active macrophages.

The immunohistochemical studies revealed that the tissue found corresponds to the muscle of the heart mentioned in Buenos Aires, the Myocardium. All in all, the study proved beyond a doubt that the occurrence was not of natural origin and went further by linking this miracle to the others that happen around the world.

3) India 2001 Where: The parish church of Saint Mary in Chirattakonam When: 5 May 2001 What Happened: On April 28 2001, the church began the Novena to St. Jude Thaddeus as they did every year. At 8:49am, the priest exposed the Most Holy Sacrament

The priest then went to the archbishop of the diocese to inform him of the change but when he returned to the parish and opened the tabernacle it had in fact developed further as now clearly in the Eucharist was not only the three red dots but a face crowned with a crown of thorns.

It is suggested that the three red dots refer to the three wounds St. Thomas asked to see of Jesus before he would believe he rose from the dead, a thought compounded by the fact that this was the reading of the day. The Eucharist remains there to this day and is often adored by the faithful.

4) Venezuela 1991 Where: The Marian Shrine of Finca Betania in Cúa When: 8 December 1991 What Happened: The priest had just divided the big host into four parts and consumed one of those pieces, as is normal in the Mass.

When he placed the remaining pieces back on the paten (the plate the host is kept on) he noticed that one of the pieces now had a red spot and from it a red substance was coming out, similar to the manner in which blood escapes from a wound, the numerous pilgrims who were there immediately verified the blood did not come from the priest.

The host continues to produce fresh blood and the then-Bishop of Los Teques requested a series of studies to test the Eucharist’s miraculous appearance.

The details of the heart’s condition are the same as those we’ve mentioned earlier, but the most incredible thing about this study was that, due to the advanced nature of the equipment they used, they were able to observe that the cardiac tissue was joined to the consecrated host in an inseparable manner. There is no scientific explanation for this; they penetrated each other, as if a fragment of ‘bread’ had suddenly transformed itself into ‘body’.

It is not possible to manipulate an event of this type. No one, absolutely no one, would have been able to do it. “Even the scientists of NASA, who have at their disposal the most modern analytical techniques, would not be able to artificially recreate such a thing” affirmed Professor Sobaniec-Lotowska.

MEN’S ROSARY IRELAND 5

The Men’s Rosary Movement Movements that bring about change for the better are often based on simple ideas. The Men’s Rosary Movement is a great example of this. Get a bunch of Catholic men together to pray the Rosary in public. It’s simple and easy to organise and perhaps that is why it is growing in Ireland and across the world.

It all started in Ireland when Owen from Northern Ireland was sent a photograph of men praying the Rosary publicly on a street in Poland.

Men’s Rosary in Poland He sent the picture to some contacts and was delighted when the response came back that the men’s Rosary was needed in Ireland and should be up and running as soon as possible. Over the next few weeks and with the help of friends the word was spread through posters, advertising, parish bulletins and most importantly, through word of mouth.

The first Men’s Rosary in Ireland took place outside the Guildhall in Derry on Saturday 2nd October 2021 with men kneeling before a statue of Our Lady. Eighty men turned up in blazing sunshine, despite heavy rain having been predicted. It was a powerful, peaceful and prayerful occasion. Many of the men’s wives stood on the periphery and joined us in prayer. Passers-by stopped, some of them obviously very moved and tearful and they too accompanied us in Our Lady’s Rosary.

This was followed on the first Saturday in November with a men’s rosary in Newry and despite heavy rain, nearly 100 men turned up to a joyful and impressive day beside the Catholic Cathedral in Newry. ​ elfast was next, on the first Saturday in December, B with 150 men kneeling and saying the Rosary in the centre of Belfast at Castle Junction and witnessed by thousands of Christmas shoppers who were passing by. Many stopped to comment on the sense of peace praying had brought and how it was wonderful to see so many men on their knees praying for the reparation, repentance, and conversion of Ireland as well as for men asking Our Lady to protect the women in their lives from the evils of abortion.

Owen set up a website www.mensrosaryireland.com and as the word began to spread the men in the South of Ireland were anxious to play their part and Men’s Rosaries have been held in many locations including Galway, Kerry, Knock, Cork and Athlone. These public Rosaries are being held on the First Saturday of the month to facilitate those who wish to do the Five First Saturdays Devotion. I was recently contacted by a friend in Sligo to let me know that the Sligo Men’s Rosary will begin in April of this year and continue on each first Saturday thereafter.

AN URGENT WAKE-UP CALL Fr. Bill Peckman Pastor’s Pen: An Urgent Wake-Up Call One of the founders of Western Philosophy, Aristotle, who lived 300-400 years before the birth of Jesus, said, “Tolerance and apathy are the virtues of a dying society.” It is a strong sign of a society that has lost its moral code. It has lost its moral code through indulgence of the senses (particularly sexual), its wealth, and its focus on leisure. The people have largely grown soft, dependent, and thus ripe for plunder. Human history is replete with examples: whether it was the Roman Republic becoming the Roman Empire, the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Weimar Republic becoming Nazi Germany, or the Kingdom of France sliding into the madness of the French Revolution, a society tagged by apathy or who sees tolerance as virtuous is ripe for collapse and totalitarianism.

What is true within the political realm is doubly true in the spiritual realm. When one takes serious reading into the Old Testament, one sees the people of Israel ebb and flow like an ocean tide in their relationship

with God. When Israel holds onto the teachings of God presented to them through the Torah (First five books of the Bible) all goes well for them and they thrive. When tolerance of foreign gods, idols, and the vile things these religions promote (child sacrifice, prostitution, use of the occult) Israel collapses. This happens soon after the death of Joshua, after the death of Solomon, during the time of the prophets who beg Israel to run from evil, through the Greek invasion, and even under Roman rule.

In Church history, we see the same. We see it in the early church with the toleration and acceptance of many heresies among the clergy almost lead to many believing Jesus was not the Son of God. We see it in the medieval church where sexual scandal among the clergy had grown so bad that ST Peter Damian, in his book, “The Book of Gomorrah” pleaded with the pope to clean up the mess that existed in the clergy. It wasn’t just sex, it was greed for wealth, it was abuse of power, and other things that crept into and was tolerated by both clergy and laity. The toleration of evil in the Renaissance Church made the Protestant Reformation inevitable. Thankfully, the Church learned this time and engaged in a Counter-Reformation which apexed with the Council of Trent.

In the 500 years since the Council of Trent, we have now come to another crossroads. The normal Catholic in western societies has become a champion of tolerance and apathy. Most people do not know their faith (not through their own fault initially) nor really show any desire to know their faith. We have many who call themselves Catholics who do not practice the faith. We have those who call themselves Catholics, and who in the name of being tolerant or relevant to society, have bought and now espouse teachings which contradict Catholic teaching. This is true even in the clergy, even among bishops. The serious and deadly scandal of such tolerance of what God has declared to be evil poisons the flocks of which the clergy have been bidden by Our Lord to shepherd.

Rushing to the Extremes I personally believe we have such a case because the extremes are running the show. On one side we have the group I call the persecutors/executors. Their answer to all sin is to hate the sinner as well as the sin. They see the sinner as beyond redemption and thus in need of severe penalties and even execution. These will shun sinners as beyond redemption or not deserving of redemption. This attitude is not in union with the Gospel Christ preached. He reached out to sinners and saw them as deserving of redemption and needing of

His love. He offered redemption to anyone who sought it. However, he did not stop people from rejecting that redemption.

On the other extreme we have the enablers. These believe if one loves the sinner then one must tolerate the sin in the name of loving the person or love the sin themselves even if they don’t adapt the sin in their own life. These people, though, will shun those who don’t follow their compromise and see the sinner as not needing redemption. This is just as bad as the other side as both could not care less about the state of the sinner’s soul.

The place of truth is between the extremes by acting in the person of Christ who offered love and redemption. He hated the sin but loved the sinner so much as to call them away from the sin. Some accepted and some rejected. We are to love the sinner but hate the sin.

This takes us to a place again where we speak the truth in charity. We should love them enough to care about the fate of their eternal soul.

Tolerance of sin or apathy towards sin condemns the sinner and proves the tolerant and apathetic to be cowards. In the wake of such cowardice and enabling we have seen the wholesale rejection of most every Church teaching about human sexuality, abortion, and family life.

When those are no longer held, it makes sense that such teachings as the Real Presence would also be rejected or unknown. Hence, religious practice continues to plummet and those who do practice are routinely mocked by this society. Like the aforementioned historical examples, we are ripe for destruction.

A Light to the Nations What has made Christianity the force for good that it has been at its best over two thousand years, is when it held fast to the truth

and applied it with great love. The Gospel bids us to love those who hate us and to do good to those who hate us. Think about it: we can do good for those who disagree with us.

St Theresa of Calcutta opened AIDS hospices in New York City and San Francisco. She didn’t become a champion of gay rights; she ministered to those were dying because she had great love. She was following hundreds of years of examples of Christian action that led to the Christian inventions of hospices, hospitals, colleges and universities, orphanages, and so on.

It led men like St Francis de Sales to reach out to homeless and discarded street kids and provide for their needs without accommodating their thievery. I could go into a very long list of examples, but the truth remains, we grow when we adhere to truth even under persecution and we choose to love both ourselves and those around us as in need of Christ’s saving redemption.

We are failing in this western world because we are slipping away from the truth through tolerance of evil and apathy to the sinner.

We have compromised out of a desire to dodge persecution and to be allowed to exist quietly in

our little worlds as if that is what Christ commanded. Nowhere does it say, “Don’t offend a sinner.” In the early Church, so much of why there were persecuted is that they both defied the corrupt society they lived in, but also because they showed great love and compassion to all, especially to those the elites dismissed as unworthy of charity or kindness.

This means our first allegiance must be to Christ and the entirety of the truth he has revealed to us.

When our first allegiance is to our comfort, to an ideology, or worst of all, a political party, then we compromise away the Gospel in the name apathy and tolerance.

My first challenge is to educate yourself in the truth of the faith!

Ignorance of the truth will not be a suitable excuse before God. In our parishes, we are going to greatly expand what we do in education from cradle to grave. No more soft, mushy, water downed catechesis.

No more spewing facts without challenging toward integration; our faith isn’t a game of Trivial Pursuit chock full in arcane factoids. No, what we believe and how we apply those beliefs matter. We are called to be a light to the world, and we cannot do that if we look, speak, and act as the world does.

8 GROWTH THROUGH SUFFERING

Christians Can’t Bypass Suffering Melanie Jean Juneau What a tragedy if, at the end of my days when I stand before God, I finally realise that I spent my earthly life playing religious games, deluding myself into believing I had lived in real communion with Christ. Our life in Christ is authentic when we are able to receive His transforming Love and then allow this Divine Love to flow through us as we love and serve others.

Life in the Spirit According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Man’s first, most important vocation in life is to live the Spirit. Fortunately, the sacraments are like an open door to this new life: What faith confesses, the sacraments communicate: by the sacraments of rebirth, Christians have become “children of God,” “partakers of the divine nature.”

Coming to see in the faith their new dignity, Christians are called to lead henceforth a life “worthy of the gospel of Christ.”They are made capable of doing so by the grace of Christ and the gifts of his Spirit, which they receive through the sacraments and through prayer.

Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, Christians are “dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” and so participate in the life of the Risen Lord. Following Christ and united with him, Christians can strive to be “imitators of God

as beloved children, and walk in love” by conforming their thoughts, words and actions to the “mind . . . which is yours in Christ Jesus,” and by following his example. ( CCC 1692, 1694) Although we ARE united to Christ

by Baptism and are dead to sin, to participate fully in the life of the resurrected Lord in our day-to-day lives, we must first be purified.

The process of purification usually involves suffering because we are mortal, human, full of pride.

Suffering I have not really written very much about my pain, the struggle to raise nine kids with little money, and endless chores on a hobby farm. I only really write about the joy of mothering. A friend pointed out to me the other day that I never really talk about the long, dark periods in my life. I guess it is because joy always triumphs eventually; I tend to forget about the painful years, the years of suffering. The love of little people, strong tea, laughter, and the presence of God in the midst of chaos seems to crack anxiety and stress, but yes, I have been shattered by the demands of mothering.

I once asked a priest what my life would have been like if I had not experienced this suffering but had married a well-off dentist, had 1.25 kids, and lived in an efficient, modern house. He put on a phony, pious face, put his hands together in prayer, and said in a high, mocking voice, “Oh, you would be a nice Christian lady, praising the Lord.”

What he meant by that amusing bit of acting was that I would be shallow, without depth and strength.

If this is the situation, I say bring on suffering, because I want — no I need — to live in reality. I can think of nothing worse than to die and discover that I had deluded myself, simply living happily on the surface, eating, drinking, doing chores, sleeping, and yet missing out on the core reality of what it means to be fully alive, fully human, in relationship to other people and to God. God always manages to use those moments when I am shattered to crack my heart and soul open to more of His presence and healing.

It is like childbirth; the pain is forgotten when I hold my newborn.

If there is no pain, no suffering,

Look at a Butterfly I can compare my struggles to conform to Christ with a butterfly struggling to emerge from its chrysalis. If I feel sorry for a poor butterfly as it struggles to emerge from its cocoon, he will either die or be left with damaged wings. The only way a butterfly can strengthen its wings is by beating them against the cocoon so its’ muscles will grow.

When you help it, you prevent it from getting strong enough to fly.

Turns out their ‘struggle’ is key to their development.

While it may be tempting, while it may sound like a good idea on the surface, neither us nor the butterfly can skip the icky stuff, the rumble.

There’s no bypass, overpass, or underpass – we gotta go through the rumble to develop our wings and fly.

Listen to His Voice For me, God speaks through books, as well as my spiritual director, and the written word. He has often changed my life through these “tools”, flipped an inner switch by bringing insight and clarity.

I then realise that each difficult stage in mothering is normal, not a big deal, because all mothers go through similar experiences. So I am not going through a dramatic or unusual crisis. I can see each difficult stage as a call from God to change and grow by going deeper, accessing the strength of the Holy Spirit within my own heart.

It takes perseverance, prayer, the sacraments, and grace to die to self and conform our thoughts, words, and deeds to Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “By his passion and death on the cross Christ has given a new meaning

Disobey and you’ll get your way Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas

For fifty years “liberal” disobedience and disregard for liturgical norms most often resulted, not only in no punishment, but in having disobedience enshrined in law.

In my senior year of high school, I was taking fourthyear Latin and third-year French; in the latter course, Sister Maria Gemma offered us a proposal: If we completed the whole textbook before semester’s end, she would give us a treat (which she didn’t identify).

We took the bait. The “treat” was spending the last two or three weeks of high school French reading Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) by Antoine de St. Exupéry.

For those unfamiliar with the novella, let this very brief (and very inadequate) summary suffice (or whet one’s appetite). A little prince goes on an inter-galactic journey in search of a friend. That work became one of the most transformative literary experiences of my life.

On one of the planets visited by the Little Prince, he meets a king – megalomaniacal to the core. He endeavours to impress his little visitor with his power, declaring that every thing and every person in his kingdom renders him absolute obedience. The little fellow is skeptical, to say the least, causing the nutty king to assert that even the sun obeys him: “You shall have your sunset. I shall command it. But I shall wait, according to my science of government, until conditions are favourable.” “And when will that be?” inquired the Little Prince. “Well, well!” replied the king, first consulting a large calendar. “Well, well! That will be around…around… that will be tonight around seven-forty! And you’ll see how well I am obeyed.”

The king based his claim on an interesting premise: “One must command from each what each can perform,” the king went on. “Authority is based first of all upon reason. If you command your subjects to jump in the ocean, there will be a revolution. I am entitled to command obedience because my orders are reasonable.”

They have made demands, assuming that they will be obeyed because they are aimed at “conservative” or “traditional” Catholics who, by their very nature, are given to obey their superiors in the Church.

Where am I going with all this?

Yes, the prelates in question have made a presumption, based on the theological convictions of their intended audience. That is, that “conservatives” obey. However, “conservatives” are not ahistorical; they have witnessed for more than half a century that “liberals” have never obeyed any liturgical authority, and have done so with impunity. Actually, more to the point, “liberal” disobedience and disregard for liturgical norms most often resulted, not only in no punishment, but in having their disobedience enshrined in law!

Let but a few examples suffice.

In spite of the fact that not a word in Vatican II discusses the reception of Holy Communion in the hand, the Low Countries, France and Germany introduced the new way (a “new way” resurrected at the Protestant Reformation), contra legem. Pope Paul VI then polled the bishops of the world on whether that method ought to be permitted. The worldwide episcopate replied with a resounding “No!” In an effort to avoid a schism, the Pope agreed to permit it in countries where the illicit practice had been introduced. Numerous other countries (where Communion in the hand had not been in vogue) petitioned the Holy See; all those petitions were viewed favourably. In the United States, the illicit mode of distribution and reception was spreading; the topic had brought to the floor of our episcopal conference on several occasions, each time defeated.

Finally, the topic surfaced for debate and vote during the presidency of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin; it failed yet again, causing Bernardin to resort – illicitly – to absentee ballots, with the result of passage by one vote.

Disobedience rewarded.

At roughly the same time, a push occurred for the reception of Holy Communion in both species on Sundays, which was not permitted. The Holy See had repeatedly forbidden the practice because of the unwieldy nature of it, as well as the concomitant almost inevitable recourse to extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to carry it out. Not only did reception under both forms continue, but dozens of bishops mandated it for their dioceses. Rome blinked.

Disobedience rewarded.

Throughout the entire Judaeo-Christian Tradition, a female had never served at the altar. That fact did not stop innovators from enlisting girls and women to join the ranks of boys and men. Some bishops attempted to enforce the ban; some winked; not a few encouraged female service at the altar; and, amazingly, some even mandated it. Rome constantly repeated the norm, to no avail. Eventually, Rome validated the use of female altar servers. Disobedience rewarded.

Pope Paul VI, in Immensae Caritatis, opened the door for the non-ordained to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion in very narrowly defined circumstances. These assistants were to be called “extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.” The U. S. Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy determined that such nomenclature sounded like these people ought to be used only in “extraordinary” situations (which was, of course, the point). So, they changed the title to “special” ministers. Pope St. John Paul II referred to abuse of the permission for extraordinary ministers “reprehensible”; Redemptionis Sacramentum decreed that such ministers were to be phased out of Masses and not to be introduced where they did not yet exist. Hardly a parish in the country does not have “extraordinary” ministers in grand supply, so that more Catholics receive Holy Communion from a lay person than from a cleric on any given Sunday. Disobedience rewarded.

Cardinal Cupich has forbidden ‘ad orientem’ celebrations of Holy Mass and has intimidated one

REWARDING DISOBEDIENCE 11 of his priests with threats of suspension for daring to question his diktat. But no bishop has the authority to forbid what universal law not only permits but actually presumes (the rubrics assume the priest is facing east, hence, the directive to “turn toward the people” to offer greetings or blessings). When authority figures resort to bullying, it is the clearest sign that they know they are constructing their edifice on sand.

We have lived through decades of liturgical abuses, with precious little effort on the part of bishops (or Rome, frankly) to stem the tide. Indeed, one of the principal reasons the usus antiquior has gained such an audience is precisely because weary Catholics have sought safe haven in that liturgical expression.

An archbishop of my acquaintance called in a priest renowned for his flagrant disregard for the rubrics of the Sacred Liturgy. He cajoled the priest to mend his ways. The priest smiled at him condescendingly. The archbishop asked him if he intended to comply. “I can’t,” came the swift response. “Would you like me to suspend you a divinis?” “You do what you gotta do, and I’ll do what I gotta do,” replied the renegade cleric.

What did the archbishop do in the end? Nothing!

So, what makes Pope Francis, Archbishop Roche and Cardinal Cupich think that their current policies will be obeyed, given our long history of disobedience being rewarded? Because their observation of human behavior leads them to conclude that “willing horses” will indeed accept “flogging” in perpetuity. But suppose those “willing horses” recall a canonical maxim, namely, that “custom is the best interpreter of law” – which, in this context, means that disobedience is generally rewarded? Or suppose, more, they have finally learned that the power-crazed king of our novella was correct: Dictates ought always to be “reasonable”?

Would it be a vain hope that ignoring unreasonable demands might give way to the reward of having one’s reasonable aspirations become law? Or, what about another canonical maxim: “I have no obligation to obey what you have no right to command”?

The Little Prince ends his visit to the king’s planet with this comment: “Grown-ups are so strange.”

One final thought for our “fathers in God”: “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged” (Colossians 3:21).

The Nine Ways Of Being An Accessory To Another’s Sin John Lacken ***NB - Parents be warned! This article contains material that is not suitable for children. - NB*** Let us pray an Ave for our bishops that they will always seek to expose the truth regardless of the fear that it can sometimes bring.

Our Lord Himself tells us that the Truth will set us free. “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

I remember when I first came across the nine ways of co-operating in the sin of another. It was when my wife asked me to examine one of our younger children on their Catechism. Our children were being home schooled at the time, and the two youngest have never attended a formal school and most of them have never taken State exams. The reason we decided to home school our children was because the Catholic schools, which had bishops as patrons, were not fully upholding the teachings of the Catholic Church or teaching the Catholic Faith properly.

One of the questions I was to ask the child was, ‘What are the nine ways of co-operating in the sin of another? I didn’t know the answer myself, but as I heard my child recite them I was overcome with the thought that this was something that I needed to look at more closely as I was probably guilty of some of these sins.

We can often think we are doing our best not to sin, but we may not realise that we can become an accessory to the sins of another by our actions or inactions.

Bishops at the Vatican

One day sometime after this, I arrived early for Holy Mass and I was leafing through my Roman Missal of 1962 in preparation for Holy Mass. At the beginning there is a section on ‘The Most Necessary Prayers’. It is followed by acts of Faith, Hope, Charity and Contrition.

A few pages later there is ‘An abridgement of Christian Doctrine’ which includes; the ten commandments; the six precepts of the Church; the Seven Sacraments; the three theological virtues and the four cardinal Virtues; the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost; the Spiritual Works of Mercy; the Corporal Works of Mercy; the eight Beatitudes; the seven deadly sins; the contrary virtues; sins against the Holy Ghost; sins crying to Heaven for vengeance; and then, I saw them listed again, Nine ways of Being Accessory to Another’s Sin. Once again I realised how poorly catechised we had been in school and I also realised the value of rote learning. To have committed these basic Church teachings to memory would be a great advantage throughout one’s life, but I did not

have this advantage. To this day I would struggle to recite some of the doctrines listed above. I would recognise them if you mentioned them, but I do not have a complete recollection of them because we did not have to learn them by heart when we were children.

When I lived in Leitrim, there was an elderly man who lived in a cabin at the end of the road. Frank lived until a few days before his hundredth birthday. Once, when I was visiting him, he showed me his ‘penny’ catechism which he had kept from primary school. I opened the well worn booklet up at a few random pages and asked him some of the questions from each page.

He answered each one correctly exactly as the answer was written in the book. Most Catholic school children nowadays, cannot even recite the ten commandments!

The nine ways of co-operating or of being an accessory in the sins of another are: 1. By Counsel: Giving advice or direction to the evil-doer; 2. By Command: Ordering or inducing another to commit sin;

3. By Consent: approving of the sin, before or after its act; 4. By Provocation: Inciting or urging one to commit sin; 5. By Praise or flattery: Inciting or urging one to commit sin by praise; 6. By Concealment: helping one to commit sin by offering to conceal the crime; 7. By Partnership: Sharing the fruits of another’s sin; 8. By Silence: Not speaking out when we should, or not acting to prevent sin when obliged; 9. By Defending evil: Attempting to justify the evil actions of others.

These were brought to my mind by several recent and some not so recent happenings. I came across a claim about an alleged cover up in one of Ireland’s seminaries. I was not able to get verifiable information to prove this, nonetheless, I thought about concealment and silence, and the truth setting us free.

I read about Jesuit Cardinal JeanClaude Hollerich, who is the president of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) describing the biblical determination of homosexual acts as sinful, as “false.”

“Asked by reporters how he approaches the Church’s determination that homosexual acts are sinful, the cardinal responded, “I believe that this is false.” He said that “thinking further about the teaching … can lead to a change in teaching.”” (Source: LifeSiteNews) Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, who is also the Archbishop of Luxembourg, was appointed as Relator General of the 2021–2023 “Synod on Synodality,” Other German bishops called for blessings of homosexual couples.

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee. I beg pardon of Thee for all those that do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen.

sexuality and this attack is being aided and abetted by certain members of the hierarchy. Those who promote a false understanding of human sexuality are involved in objectively sinful acts. Those who promote a false understanding of human sexuality to children, are guilty of child abuse. We cannot remain silent while this state of affairs persists otherwise we will become accomplices in sin.

The situation in Ireland is no better than elsewhere in the world. As we have pointed out on many occasions, the dangerous and childdamaging LGBT ideology is being actively promoted in Catholic schools in Ireland, to Catholic school-children.

Here is a recent example of what is happening in Ireland. I have mentioned the Kerry Diocesan Youth Services (KDYS) before. The bishop of Kerry, Bishop Raymond Browne, has the authority to appoint four members to the board of directors. There was one Kerry diocesan priest who was listed as chairman of the board of directors in their 2019 Annual Report. There is a link to the KDYS on the Kerry Diocesan website.

Alcohol, Sexual Health. There is a ‘DASH’ van which was due to be in the Abbey Street car park in Tralee on Monday 7th February 2022, and the KDYS encourages young people to drop in if they have any questions.

Telling the young people to ‘Go visit them’.

The staff who man the DASH van hand out free condoms to young people. Their ideology around human sexuality is false, misleading and also sinful.

They also fully support abortion and, any girl who might get pregnant as a result of the failure of the condoms handed out for free by the DASH van team, will be helped to kill her child should she so choose.

The DASH van is run by the Sexual Health Centre, which is based in Cork. They have a strategic plan for 2019 - 2023. Here is an excerpt from Goal 5 of that plan Goal 5: To support all individuals in society in relation to crisis and unplanned pregnancies, sexual dysfunction, sexual addiction, porn addiction, sexuality, healthy relationships and HIV...

“To continue to meet the demand for all-option support to people experiencing a crisis or unplanned pregnancy as well as individuals who wish to access post-termination counselling” ‘All-option support’ is a euphemism to indicate that they support the killing of nascent unborn human beings in their mother’s wombs.

In the past, when we have contacted Bishop Browne, he refuses to take any responsibility for what is going on in the KDYS which includes promoting the LGBT ideology to children as young as 13, and here we see the KDYS promoting an organisation that promotes contraception and abortion. Bishop Browne refuses to publicly condemn these sinful actions.

The audited accounts for 2019 of the Sexual Health Centre shows that they received €565,665 in Government funding. The Kerry Diocesan Youth Services Annual Report of 2019 shows that they received €3,073,988 in Government funding.

On their website, the Sexual Health Centre also lists The Cloyne Diocesan Youth Services as an organisation that they work with. The Cloyne Diocesan Youth Services received just over €2,000,000 from

government agencies in 2020. Their annual report contains a message from Bishop William Crean.

Parents should be outraged that their hard earned taxes are being used by government and other agencies to corrupt their children.

Catholic parents should be outraged at the silence and complicity of some of their bishops in these matters.

When these matters are raised you will be told about all the good that these organisations do. However, doing good does not excuse co-operating with organisations that promote abortion and that distribute free condoms to young people. Such co-operation tarnishes the good works that are done by these diocesan youth organisations.

Also, when Catholics speak of doing good, it must always be looked at in the light of the ultimate good, which is to attain Heaven. If such scandalous behaviour leads even one young person into a sinful way of life and eternal damnation, then of what real benefit will these organisations have been to such a soul? What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and loses his soul?

When we look back at the nine ways of co-operating in evil there are a few that apply to these situations.

Counsel and Consent immediately come to mind.

The KDYS counselled the young people who engage with them to go and visit an organisation that is encouraging young people to commit grievous sins.

They are thus guilty of consenting to the sinful actions of distributing condoms and of promoting an organisation where it is known that Catholic moral teaching on human sexuality is rejected.

Silence also comes to mind. The bishops, who publicly congratulate themselves on their child protection programmes, remain silent in the face of these organisations which seek to corrupt young people and who also try to actively engage with them and promote their false sexual ideologies in Catholic Schools.

We are not talking about some minor sins here, we are talking about sins against the fifth and sixth commandments - contraception and abortion.

But now that you have read through this article, I have put you in a position where you too are aware of the sins being committed by these organisations which are corrupting our young people and children, while the bishops look away and choose not to see.

You also have a duty to find out what is going on and then to speak out. I am asking you to contact Bishop Raymond Browne and Bishop William Crean asking them to publicly speak out against these abuses of our young people and to stop permitting the promotion of contraception and abortion through their diocesan youth services.

If they have lost control of these diocesan organisations, then they should cut all ties with them and ask them to change their names so that the dioceses are no longer publicly associated with the promotion of contraception and abortion.

Remember that the immoral RSE programmes were stalled for years in Ireland because Catholic parents objected to the corruption of their children. Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis Are Clear: Families Are Headed by Parents, Not the State Monika Jablonska A nation that constrains parents from being parents has no future “Those in society who are in charge of schools must never forget that the parents have been appointed

by God himself as the first and principal educators of their children and that their right is completely inalienable.” —John Paul II Parents are the most important part of the family equation as far as the education of the young. Mothers and fathers offer the first lesson in living, the first lesson in religion and the first lesson in prayer.

A mother and child, especially, present a special and unique type of a relationship. She is the child’s first educator.

The father, even though he doesn’t have a direct part to play at the stage of child’s growth in his mother womb, provides attention and reinforcement throughout the mother’s pregnancy. The father’s voice, support, and love projects through the mother toward the child. Fathers, like mothers, are pillars in the development of a child’s emotional well-being.

As clearly expressed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI:

As the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church reminds us:

Children have a right to be educated in authentic moral values rooted in the dignity of the human person, to be inspired by the truth of our Catholic faith and to learn ways of behaving and acting that lead to healthy self-esteem and lasting happiness. This noble but demanding task is entrusted in the first place to you, their parents.

By giving life to their children, the mother and father share in God’s creative work. They teach their children faith, love, values and morals. They teach them how to forgive, to be generous, to be open, to respect people and to be good human beings.

Since parents have given children their life, they are bound by the most serious obligation to educate their offspring and therefore must be recognised as the primary and principal educators. This role in education is so important that only with difficulty can it be supplied where it is lacking. Parents are the ones who must create a family atmosphere by love and respect for God and man, in which the well-rounded personal and social education of children is fostered.

Hence the family is the first school of the social virtues that every society needs.

According to Pope St. John Paul II: Parents are the first and most important educators of their own children, and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area: they are educators because they are parents. They share their educational mission with other individuals or institutions, such as the Church and the State.

O Jesus, it is for the love of Thee, in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and for the conversion of poor sinners [that I do this]. Amen.

Today, parents remain under continuous and determined attack.

They fight for their children at schools that try to smuggle ageinappropriate content (such as gender identity, sexuality and confusion about what constitutes a family).

The truth is, nobody but the parents can decide about their children.

Neither schools, nor government, nor any others, have the right to steal children from the parents to indoctrinate them, to deprive them of the truth and to limit their freedom.

A nation that constrains the parents from deciding about their own children, or intentionally excludes them from their young one’s lives,

instead of exacerbating the threats to our integrity. Protecting families means endeavouring to create for it an environment favourable for its development.

On March 18, 2015, during a General Audience, Pope Francis said:

has no future. A nation that kills its own children has no future.

A country that abuses its own children’s human rights has no future.

In fact, from the way children are treated society can be judged, not only morally but also sociologically, whether it is a liberal society or society enslaved by international interests. …

Children remind us … that are all sons and daughters. … And this always brings us back to the fact that we did not give ourselves life but that we have received it.

The main purpose of every state is to protect the duties and rights of parents and their children.

Our government should protect, respect and appreciate families’ rights, morals and values, and foster them:

Americans, stand up for your children! Fight for your family!

Our children are the bright future of this soil. Nobody but you can decide about your own children.

You decide about their past, present and future. Pope John Paul II said:

Protecting the nation’s families means identifying evil to defeat it,

Catholic parents must learn to form their family as a ‘domestic

church,’ a church in the home as it were, where God is honoured … prayer is a normal event … and everyone shares the hopes, the problems, and sufferings of everyone else.

In the meantime, dear children, honour your father and your mother. In a certain sense, they are representatives of the Lord. They are the ones who gave you life, and those who introduced you to human existence in family life, nation and culture.

The future of humanity flows by way of the family.

LIBERALISM IS A SIN

Don Félix Sardà y Salvany: – was born on May 21, 1844 in Sabadell, Catalonia, Spain. He was a Catholic priest and writer who wrote against Liberalism which he considered a grave sin. He was the editor of the weekly Spanish Catholic magazine ‘La Revista Popular’ for over forty years. He died on January 2, 1916 at the age of 71. This book, Liberalism is a Sin, is particularly relevant to the times we live in today where Liberalism permeates every aspect of our society and has deeply infiltrated the thinking of many of the Catholic hierarchy.

Should The State Prescribe Compulsory Medications?

During the brief period of democracy in western Europe following the defeat of Hitler and Mussolini, and eventually in eastern Europe following the defeat of Soviet Communism, rioting in the streets was comparatively rare, for the people were able to use the mechanisms of parliamentary democracy to keep the State in check.

The European Union, however, has ushered in another era of centralised, anti-democratic, superstate control. Many European nations have decided that their citizens must either accept Statemandated medication in the form of the Chinese-virus vaccines or accept what, in effect, amounts to house arrest and imprisonment.

Rioting and fire-setting has erupted in various European cities, including Brussels, the seat of the European tyranny-by-clerk. Riots also broke out in the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Denmark and even Switzerland, where such events are extremely rare.

The pretext advanced by the Kommissars of Brussels and by Ministers in many of their vassal states was the surge in the Chinesevirus infections.

Yet in Britain, now no longer a satrapy of Brussels, where the ZOE Chinese-virus study reports an estimated 70,000 new infections per day, Britain’s health minister has said that for the time being compulsion will be avoided.

In fact, there is no need for compulsion at all. For, contrary to the official narrative, the vaccines have not proven particularly efficacious in preventing the transmission or acquisition of infection.

They substantially reduce the risk of severe disease or death, but, again contrary to the official narrative, vaccination is neither the only – nor necessarily even the best – prophylactic.

It is the obligation of governments, instead of resorting to compulsion, to find alternative methods of treatment for those who – for whatever reasons – refuse to be vaccinated.

If only the Pooterish politicians of little Europe were to lift their gaze from our tiny continent and look around the world, they would find some very interesting experiments in the repurposing of ordinary, inexpensive, safe, pre-existing medications – a repurposing that is successfully defeating the infection.

In India, for instance, the States of Goa and Uttar Pradesh could not afford to vaccinate their entire populations. They were able to vaccinate only health-care workers and those most at risk.

Therefore, they put together treatment packs so that anyone who became infected could administer to himself a combination of corticosteroids, Vitamins D and K, zinc supplements, an anti-parasitic and an anticoagulant.

The World Death Organization protested and the Indian Government tried to intervene, but the States have the power to administer healthcare.

The results in Goa and Uttar Pradesh were spectacular. For the Indians, who have been famous as mathematicians for many centuries, realised that even though each individual repurposed or “off-label” medication might only reduce the risk of severe outcomes by a statistically-insignificant one-third, which is about half the risk reduction available from the vaccine, several such medications in combination would not merely achieve statistical significance but also reduce the risk of severe outcomes by even more than the two-thirds achieved by the vaccines.

Dr Peter McCullough of Texas A&M University has put together a simple treatment protocol, starting with a prophylactic stage for everyone, and then with subsequent stages for treating those who become infected.

His protocol is very similar to that in Goa and Uttar Pradesh. Like them, he has had considerable success with his combination treatment – so much so that he recommends against bothering with the vaccines at all (though here the mathematics are against him).

Total Depravity And St John Bosco What a beautiful soul St John Bosco was!

It was while I was serving as a high school chaplain that I came across St John Bosco’s philosophy of child discipline.

This harsh doctrine is an attempt to glorify God and exalt his almighty Divine Providence, but in doing so it echoes the harsher beliefs in Islam. It also denigrates rather than dignifies man.

He would advise his brothers that the boys in their orphanages should be treated with gentleness and kindness because, he observed, God had planted in the children the desire to please their father figures. This was a natural desire to do good and be good, and therefore the brothers should recognise and encourage this natural desire for goodness through joy, encouragement and gentleness–always avoiding harsh discipline and anything that would quench the child’s natural longing for goodness and love.

In this sense he echoes St Benedict who prescribes that in the monastery there should be “nothing harsh, nothing burdensome.”

This was refreshing for me as a person and encouraging for me as a pastor. It was especially refreshing for me because one of the theological assumptions in the Protestant world in which I was raised was the Calvinistic doctrine of total depravity – that we are totally depraved – that original sin has ruined us to such an extent that we cannot even desire the good, the beautiful and the true, and that God’s forgiveness cannot re-make

John Bosco’s tender pastoral advice reminds us that we are created in God’s image and that our natural desire for the beautiful, good and true is the indelible mark of God’s good creation within us. He creates us and said, “That’s good!”

This goodness is wounded by original sin, but not obliterated and we only turn ugly when that original goodness and natural enthusiasm for the good is wounded by others who are harsh, abusive or overly demanding and strict.

One of the ways this abuse takes place is through the assumption that the child is “totally depraved” and therefore he or she is going to be bad, is going to be rebellious, is going to be wicked and that, therefore, they need to be harshly disciplined from the get go.

Instead of this St John Bosco (and St Benedict before him) encourages a gentle, loving approach–using the child’s natural desire to please–the natural desire for goodness and happiness to lead him or her to the joy of an abundant life. Along with

this advice is the common sense advice that the parent or teacher take time to explain why there are certain rules and expectations rather than simply laying down the law.

I found as a parent the most wonderful surprise. In teaching my children right and wrong–even at a very early age they were smart and logical. If I took the time to explain why I expected certain behaviours and why they made sense the child most often responded positively.

Of course there are some children (and parishioners) who are more recalcitrant than others, but even they are usually won over by St John Bosco’s mixture of common sense, love and goodwill.

Superbook – A Modern Way To Teach The Bible Mary Kearns

Grandparents lament the dearth of knowledge of the Catholic faith amongst children and are deeply saddened by the fact that in many cases, their own sons and daughters have failed to pass the faith on to their own families.

This is a common realisation among all adult Catholics, quite apart from those with children and grandchildren. The question is invariably “what can we do?” When we have the opportunity, we can bring them to the church. Children love to light candles and this gives us the chance to talk about the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Blessed Lady and some of the saints. Some churches now have statues of saints Jacinta and Francesco and because of the youth of these new saints, it can be a way children can be introduced to the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.

We can also tell the young boys and girls about the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle and show them how we genuflect. Of course the earlier we start this practice the better as very young children have no difficulty accepting it. All of this is good and long as parents raise no objections; it is something we should do whenever possible.

However this is not enough. The children are learning about the faith at school but unless they are particularly blessed in having teachers who are themselves people of faith, what they are being taught is a watered-down version of Catholicism which would be hard enough to distinguish from other Christian religions.

The cliché “meet them where they’re at” has particular relevance

now and “where they are at” is generally speaking, what they see on television.

There is a Faith-based series which would compete very favourably with Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, Power Rangers and the many other programmes which keep children glued to the TV screen such as Teenage Bounty Hunters and other dramas for older kids streamed through Netflix.

“Superbook” began in Japan in the 1980s and has had unprecedented success throughout the world since that time. Based on the Bible, it features two children, Joy and Chris, who with their robot friend, are transported through the years back to the time of Jesus where they get involved in the Gospel.

The series also covers the Old Testament where the children meet Moses and Jonah and other significant persons from those years.

Joy and Chris are typical middle school children whose adventures begin when a mysterious device

appears and takes them away on journeys throughout the Bible.

“Superbook” has a great appeal to children because Joy and Chris are like real kids who ask questions like real kids and integrate into the bible stories in way children of nowadays can relate to.

Each episode begins in today’s world where we meet Joy, Chris and their robot Gizmo, who are either in some sort of trouble or have a difficulty they can’t deal with. “Superbook” is a tabletesque digital Bible who suddenly shows up just at the right time and brings the three friends through the years to biblical times.

Just like most children today, Joy and Chris have little knowledge of the Bible but they are immersed into the relevance of what is happening and get involved in the action. At the end of the episode they are brought back to the present when they can apply what they have learned to their own lives with integrity and honesty.

“Research performed during and after the outreach showed that this series was an unprecedented success. “Superbook”, also known as Animated Parent and Child Theatre, is an animated television series produced by Tatsunoko Productions in Japan in conjunction with The Christian Broadcasting Network in the United States.

Each episode is twenty minutes long and starts in modern times with Joy and Chris having some trouble or difficulty. When they encounter Jesus and other biblical persons they learn something that will solve their own difficulties and which they can take back with them to their own lives.

From Japan, the “Superbook” series went on to air throughout the world from Asia to North America. By 1989, in the midst of economic and political turmoil, “Superbook” began broadcasting in the Soviet Union to astounding results.

“Superbook” aired during primetime on the Soviet National Channel. CBN received over 6 million letters from children, introducing a whole new generation to the Bible. Even today, the “Superbook” Kids Club is one of the highest rated live-action children’s programs in Ukraine.

Since first airing in Japan, the series has now been broadcast in over 106 countries, translated into 43 languages, and viewed by over 500 million people.”

Adults who have watched some episodes are amazed at how good the story is and children who watch are enthralled. “Superbook” (in other words the Bible) is unlike any other faith-based TV show. It has to be viewed to be appreciated. The action scenes are exciting and the pace is fast-moving but the story

To get introduced to “Superbook,” good episodes to start with are The First Christmas and also the Wedding Feast of Cana and the Feeding of the Five Thousand.

A particularly good episode is the parable of the Prodigal Son. This is the Gospel story we will be hearing on the Fourth Sunday of Lent.

What a great opportunity this will be if we can bring the children to Mass on that day when they have already seen the story on screen!

“Superbook” is the Bible brought to life through animation but it is more than entertainment. There is also a Superbook Bible App and the Superbook Kids web-site. This is an engaging and powerful means of introducing children to the Bible

A word of warning is needed however. Some of the episodes can be somewhat alarming with depictions of Satan or demons, for instance in the case of Jesus exorcising the Gerasene demoniac.

Parents might object to young children viewing this so it is advisable for an adult to take a look at each episode before showing to children.

Reclaiming the Vocation of Marriage Michele Chronister Recently, a friend of my husband’s from graduate school took vows as a consecrated virgin. Of all the vocations in the Church, this one is admittedly the one that I know the least about, and I was deeply struck by the rite and the vows she took. We weren’t able to attend in person, but I have no doubt that it would have been even more deeply moving if we had.

And briefly, there flickered a sort of insecurity about my own vocation in my heart. The Church recognises that those vowed to priesthood or any celibate vocation are a foretaste of the life that will be all of ours in heaven (where “they will neither marry nor be given in marriage”). Sometimes, it is even spoken of as a sort of “superior” vocation, one that mostly renounces the cares of the world in favour to total devotion to God. Although there is a beautiful line in the rite of Consecration of Virgins about the gift of marriage as the first gift given by God to humanity (and how the call to perpetual virginity in no way negates the gift of marriage) I still found myself wondering… have I chosen the lesser part?

And then, I recalled our vocation story.

The Gift of Vocation Before getting married, my husband had considered the priesthood, and I had considered religious life.

But when we were honest with ourselves, we realised that we mainly considered those vocations because we loved God and wanted to be holy – and priesthood and religious life just seemed like the holier options (as opposed to marriage). After dating for six months, God made it very clear to both of us (with a calm yet persistent call placed in our hearts) that he

was calling us to the vocation of marriage. What surprised both of us was that it felt less like something we were giving to God, and more like something he was giving to us – and we were profoundly humbled in the face of that gift.

I don’t know if anyone else ever had this problem, but when I was a teenager, I remember having repeated nightmares that I had to get married, and that it was to someone that I didn’t want to be stuck with.

In the back of my mind, even though I dated and wanted children, I wasn’t sure if I would ever know that a guy was “the one” – at least not with any kind of deep certainty.

(Needless to say, those nightmares have ceased and I have only found myself loving my husband more with each passing year.)

Over the course of our dating and engagement, we spent countless hours in the chapels on our college campus, praying together but also just letting Jesus (in the tabernacle) be a sort of chaperone – a constant presence in our conversations and discernment. Although we certainly

were (and are) in love, what ultimately drew us to the married vocation was that he was at the centre of our relationship and being together made us closer to him. To this day, when we are disagreeing about something, or frustrated with each other, and we take the opportunity to bring it to prayer – it all melts away because our love for him has somehow melded into our love for each other.

This all might sound kind of lofty, and I assure you that we have a normal marriage, filled with the normal ups and downs of family life. We aren’t perfect by any means, we don’t agree about everything, and we don’t spend all of our downtime praying. We watch our favourite shows, laugh over our favourite memes, and plan home improvement projects for our little fixer-upper. But the undercurrent to all that we do is Him. Through our marriage, he is whittling away the rough edges and daily gifting us with his love in concrete ways.

That is what makes this vocation of marriage a gift.

A couple of years ago, while discerning a shift in my prayer life, a call to a deepening of my own faith, I remember having numerous conversations with my spiritual director about marriage and the call to holiness. I was afraid that being married would sort of preclude me from “levelling up” in my faith life.

After all, weren’t the higher levels of prayer and faith life reserved for priests and religious? In college, thinking that I might be called to married life, I remember digging through the library’s collection, trying to find books about married saints. My college library was thirteen stories high. I found one or two books on the topic.

With his talent for fatherly reassurance (which I am certain must be a gift of ordination) my spiritual director reassured me that loving Jesus didn’t mean that I wasn’t loving my husband well (and vice versa). Loving my husband led

Catholic Voice me closer to Jesus, and loving Jesus deeply and with longing made me a better wife.

does not mean that there are few married saints – just many whose names are known to God alone.

He then went on to tell me that he had been standing in St. Peter’s Square at the canonisation of Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin – the first couple to ever be canonised together. He explained to me that normally, when someone is canonised, they are placed into a category – virgins, martyrs, pastors, etc. When Sts. Louis and Zelie were canonised, they were put into an entirely new category of saints – “the marrieds”.

The Complementarity of Vocations

As we talked, he and I agreed – God is calling married couples in our generation, in a particular way, to a life of deeper sanctity. The world needs the witness of married couples, living a life of love for Christ.

It is true that there are few married, canonised saints. They are still far outnumbered by those in priesthood and religious life. However, that

The prayers at a wedding Mass are theologically rich and beautiful.

Marriage should be entered into with the same kind of gravity and discernment that priesthood and religious life are. The married vocation needs to be reclaimed from what the world says it is – a happy conclusion to the story of two people falling madly in love – to what it actually is – the decision of a man and woman to seek union with God through deeper union with each other. Along with that is the call to embrace to cross, to suffer, to die to self, and ultimately to find a deeper joy in Christ…together.

St. Vincent Of Lerins On How To Navigate A Church Crisis Fr David Nix Many Catholics think that “Catholic” means “universal,” and they are correct, but they make the mistake of thinking this is universal not through history but just today in this current Church crisis.

We look to the great saint and doctor of the Church of the 5th century, St. Vincent of Lerins, for how to navigate a Church crisis when many bishops believe and teach different things. St. Vincent of Lerins was one of the very, very few bishops who fought against the global 5th century heresy of Arianism believed by 99% of the bishops of his day. We will see below in his writings why “Catholic” does not mean “universal” (for example, as in an opinion poll of a certain time of history) but rather that Catholicism is that what has been believed “everywhere, always and by all” Catholics of the past, as New Advent quotes the great saint: Moreover, in the Catholic Church itself, all possible care must be taken, that we hold that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, by all. For that is truly and in the strictest sense Catholic, which, as the name itself and

the reason of the thing declare, comprehends all universally. This rule we shall observe if we follow universality, antiquity, consent.

We shall follow universality if we confess that one faith to be true, which the whole Church throughout the world confesses; antiquity, if we in no way depart from those interpretations which it is manifest were notoriously held by our holy ancestors and fathers.

Here are some other quotes in italics from the doctor of the Church, St. Vincent Lerins, who stood against the global heresy of the 4th century of Arianism with my analysis in bold applying it to the current global heresy of modernism: What then will a Catholic Christian do, if a small portion of the Church have cut itself off from the communion of the universal faith? What, surely, but prefer the soundness of the whole body to the unsoundness of a pestilent and corrupt member? What, if some novel contagion seek to infect not merely an insignificant portion of the Church, but the whole?

Then it will be his care to cleave

Of course, the first sentence might not be used by traditionalists but rather against traditionalists, namely, “if a small portion of the Church have cut itself off from the communion of the universal faith,” it should be excised from the body.

Indeed, are not those today who attend the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and hold to the same faith as our great-grandparents simply “a small portion of the Church”?

Indeed, we are small, and some would say “pestilent.” However, St. Vincent of Lerins is again asking us to consider not only the one billion Catholics living currently, but all the Catholics who have ever lived. How do we know this is his assertion?

Because he links the word “pestilent” with the two words “novel contagion.” Any new doctrine developed by so-called “Catholics” must always be seen as a novel infection affecting only certain sad times of Church history.

The cure for the cancer of any such “novel contagion” in any dark point of Church history was just written by the Doctor of the Church: “It will be his care to cleave to antiquity, which in the present cannot possibly be seduced by any fraud of novelty.”

So also when the Arian poison had infected not an insignificant portion of the Church but almost the whole world, so that a sort of blindness had fallen upon almost all the bishops of the Latin tongue, circumvented partly by force partly by fraud, and was preventing them from seeing what was most expedient to be done in the midst of so much confusion, then whoever was a true lover and worshipper of Christ [preferred] the ancient belief to the novel misbelief, escaped the pestilent infection.

Again we see that it is possible for God to allow 99% of the Catholic bishops of the world to fall into error in the darkest times of Church history, especially when Catholics live under a great punishment from God for their own sins.

But the litmus test of heresy in a person is if they “prefer the ancient belief to the novel misbelief.”

When there is confusion in Church history, St. Vincent teaches that those who have new beliefs are living in “blindness” but the “true lover and worshipper of Christ” holds “the ancient belief.”

The ancient faith is the same faith that all the dead Catholics before us believed. Indeed, these dead Catholics are currently the most alive in Christ.

But it may be that we invent these charges out of hatred to novelty and zeal for antiquity. Whoever is disposed to listen to such an insinuation, let him at least believe the blessed Ambrose, who, deploring the acerbity of the time, says, in the second book of his work addressed to the Emperor Gratian:

“Enough now, O God Almighty!

Have we expiated with our own ruin, with our own blood, the slaughter of Confessors, the banishment of priests, and the wickedness of such extreme impiety. It is clear, beyond question, that they who have violated the faith cannot remain in safety.”

I was just telling a young family the other night that it is all the holiest priests I know (those much holier than me) who always get put on the shelf or suspended under false accusations while the corrupt and heretical clergy continue unchecked, nearly to a man in the 21st century. Indeed, the heresy of modernism executes the exact thing that St. Ambrose begged God to end: “the banishment of priests.”

He lamented the side-lining of true priests, not heretical priests. So also we too must pray for the end of this punishment from God that He allows: apostasy from the topdown, as prophesied (most likely) in the third Secret of Fatima.

But in this divine virtue, as we may call it, exhibited by these Confessors, we must note especially that the defence which they then undertook in appealing to the Ancient Church, was the defence, not of a part, but of the whole body. For it was not right

that men of such eminence should uphold with so huge an effort the vague and conflicting notions of one or two men, or should exert themselves in the defence of some ill-advised combination of some petty province; but adhering to the decrees and definitions of the universal priesthood of Holy Church, the heirs of Apostolic and Catholic truth, they chose rather to deliver up themselves than to betray the faith of universality and antiquity. For which cause they were deemed worthy of so great glory as not only to be accounted Confessors, but rightly, and deservedly to be accounted foremost among Confessors.

Notice here that St. Vincent of Lerins is basically saying that the bad guys of Church history always promote notions that he can only describe as “vague” where the good guys of Church history hold to a faith he can only describe as “Apostolic and Catholic.”

Modernism has infected the whole Church, but it started as St. Vincent of Lerins said, with the “vague and conflicting notions of one or two men.” Indeed, heretics always use vague language so that they can be slimy and sneak away like a snake.

But those who hold to Apostolic Catholicism choose “the faith of

St Paul to the Galatians “As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema.”

(Galatians 1:9)

Notice again that “universality” does not mean that which might be erroneously held by most Catholics in an isolated time of Church history, but rather the saint directly links “universality” to “antiquity.”

That is, the Catholic Faith is the Faith of our Fathers. Our Faith is that which is believed not by a bishop’s conference but that which has been believed “everywhere, always, by all” as the saint said.

But some one will ask, How is it then, that certain excellent persons, and of position in the Church, are often permitted by God to preach novel doctrines to Catholics? …

The reason is clearer than day why Divine Providence sometimes permits certain teachers of the Churches to preach new doctrines — That the Lord your God may

try you; he says. And assuredly it is a great trial when one whom you believe to be a prophet, a disciple of prophets, a teacher and defender of the truth, whom you have folded to your chest with the utmost veneration and love, when such a one of a sudden secretly and furtively brings in noxious errors, which you can neither quickly detect, being held by the prestige of former authority, nor lightly think it right to condemn, being prevented by affection for your old master.

Notice that God only allows good Catholics to be betrayed doctrinally by a bad hierarchy not so that such good Catholics go to hell, but so that they have a higher place in heaven through identifying the classic truths of the Catholic Faith around such bad leadership.

Of course, it’s no fun having bad leadership in the Church but it is

only permitted “that the Lord your God may try you.” Indeed, consider how many lukewarm Catholics have had to ‘google’ classic Catholic teaching just the past two years alone in order to get to the bottom of a thousand conflicting opinions found in the current hierarchy?

Even non-Catholics are googling the truths of traditional Catholicism not despite our wonky leadership but because of our wonky leadership. Glory be to God that out of this confusion is springing new converts who are discovering Apostolic Catholicism and our Holy Fathers. They are discovering the One Catholic Faith found in “antiquity,” as St. Vincent of Lerins calls it. The saints clearly teach that when confusion abounds in the hierarchy, “antiquity” is the only safe and guaranteed path to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the one and only Saviour of the world.

“The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.”

How To Practice A Good Lent - Part 1 Dom Prosper Gueranger

Having spent the three weeks of Septuagesima in meditating upon our spiritual infirmities and upon the wounds caused in us by sin, we should be ready to enter upon the penitential season which the Church has now begun. We have now a clearer knowledge of the justice and holiness of God, and of the dangers that await an impenitent soul; and, that our repentance might be earnest and lasting, we have bade farewell to the vain joys and baubles of the world. Our pride has been humbled by the prophecy, that these bodies would soon be like the ashes that wrote the memento of death upon our foreheads.

During these forty days of penance, which seem so long to our poor nature, we shall not be deprived of the company of our Jesus. He seemed to have withdrawn from us during those week of Septuagesima, when everything spoke to us of His maledictions upon sinful man, but this absence has done us good. It has taught us how to tremble at the voice of God’s anger. ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’, we have found it to be so: the spirit of penance is now active within us, because we have feared.

And now, let us look at the divine object that is before us. It is our Emmanuel; the same Jesus, but not under the form of the sweet Babe whom we adored in His crib. He has grown to the fullness of the age of man, and wears the semblance of a sinner, trembling and humbling Himself before the sovereign Majesty of His Father whom we have offended, and to whom He now offers Himself as the Victim of propitiation.

He loves us with a brother’s love; and seeing that the season for doing penance has begun, He comes to cheer us on by His presence and His own example. We are going

to spend forty days in fasting and abstinence: Jesus, who is innocence itself, goes through the same penance.

We have separated ourselves, for a time, from the pleasures and vanities of the world: Jesus withdraws from the company and sight of men.

We intend to assist at the divine services more assiduously, and pray more fervently, than at other times: Jesus spends forty days and forty nights in praying, like the humblest suppliant; and all this for us. We are going to think over our past sins, and bewail them in bitter grief: Jesus suffers for them and weeps over them in the silence of the desert, as though He Himself had committed them.

No sooner had He received baptism from the hands of St. John, than the Holy Ghost led Him to the desert.

The time had come for showing

Himself to the world; He would begin by teaching us a lesson of immense importance. He leaves the saintly Precursor and the admiring multitude, that had seen the divine Spirit descend upon Him, and heard the Father’s voice proclaiming Him to be His beloved Son; He leaves them and goes into the desert.

Not far from the Jordan there rises a rugged mountain, which has received, in after ages, the name of Quarantana. It commands a view of the fertile plain of Jericho, the Jordan, and the Dead Sea. It is within a cave of this wild rock that the Son of God now enters, His only companions being the dumb animals who have chosen this same cave for their own shelter. He has no food wherewith to satisfy the pangs of hunger; the barren rock can yield Him no drink; His only bed must be of stone. Here He is to

“Offer up everything within your power as a sacrifice to the Lord in an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended; and of supplication for the conversion of sinners. Thus invoke peace upon your country. I am her Guardian Angel; the Angel of Portugal. Above all, accept and bear with submission the sufferings that the Lord may send you.”

Thus does our Saviour go before us on the holy path of Lent. He has borne all its fatigues and hardships, that so we, when called upon to tread the narrow way of our Lenten penance, might have His example wherewith to silence the excuses, and sophisms, and repugnances, of self-love and pride.

The lesson is here too plainly given not to be understood; the law of doing penance for sin is here too clearly shown, and we cannot plead ignorance: let us honestly accept the teaching and practise it. Jesus leaves the desert where He has spent the forty days, and begins His preaching with these words, which He addresses to all men: “Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

(Matthew 4:17) Let us not harden our hearts to this invitation, lest there be fulfilled in us the terrible threat contained in those other words of our redeemer: “Unless you do penance, you shall perish.” (Luke 13:3) Now, penance consists in contrition of the soul, and mortification of the body; these two parts are essential

to it. The soul has willed the sin; the body has frequently co-operated in its commission. Moreover, man is composed of both soul and body; both, then, should pay homage to their Creator. The body is to share with the soul either the delights of heaven or the torments of hell; there cannot, therefore, be any thorough Christian life, or any earnest penance, where the body does not take’ part, in both, with the soul.

But it is the soul which gives reality to penance. The Gospel teaches this by the examples it holds out to us of the prodigal son, of Magdalene, of Zaccheus, and of St. Peter. The soul, then, must be resolved to give up every sin; she must heartily grieve over those she has committed; she must hate sin; she must shun the occasions of sin.

The sacred Scriptures have a word for this inward disposition, which has been adopted by the Christian world, and which admirably expresses the state of the soul that has turned away from her sins: this word is conversion. The Christian should, therefore, during Lent, study to excite himself to this repentance of heart, and look upon it as the essential foundation of all his Lenten exercises. Nevertheless, he must remember that this spiritual penance would be a mere delusion, were he not to practise mortification of the body. Let him study the example given him by his Saviour, who grieves, indeed, and weeps over our sins; but He also expiates them by His bodily sufferings. Hence it is that the Church, the infallible interpreter of her divine Master’s will, tells us that the repentance of our heart will not be accepted by God, unless it be accompanied by fasting and abstinence.

How great, then, is the illusion of those Christians, who forget their past sins, or compare themselves with others whose lives they take to have been worse than their own; and thus satisfied with themselves, can see no harm or danger in the easy life they intend to pass for the rest of their days! They will tell you that there can be no need of their thinking of their past sins, for they have made a good confession! Is not the life they

have led since that time a sufficient proof of their solid piety? And why should anyone speak to them about the justice of God and mortification? Accordingly, as soon as Lent approaches, they must get all manner of dispensations. Abstinence is an inconvenience; fasting has an effect upon their health, it would interfere with their occupations, it is such a change from their ordinary way of living; besides, there are so many people who are better than themselves, and yet who never fast or abstain. And, as the idea never enters their minds of supplying for the penances prescribed by the Church by other penitential exercises, such persons as these gradually and unsuspectingly lose the Christian spirit.

The Church sees this frightful decay of supernatural energy; but she cherishes what is still left, by making her Lenten observances easier, year after year. With the hope of maintaining that little, and of seeing it strengthen for some better future, she leaves to the justice of God her children who hearken not to her when she teaches them how they might, even now, propitiate His anger. Alas! these her children, of whom we are speaking, are quite satisfied that things should be as they are, and never think of judging their own conduct by the examples Jesus and His saints, or by the undeviating rules of Christian penance.

It is true, there are exceptions; but how rare they are, especially in our large towns! Groundless prejudices, idle excuses, bad example, all tend to lead men from the observance of Lent. Is it not sad to hear people giving such a reason as this for their not fasting or abstaining — because they feel them? Surely, they forget that the very aim of fasting and abstinence is to make these bodies of sin suffer and feel. And what will they answer on the day of judgment, when our Saviour shall show them how the very Turks, who were the disciples of a gross and sensual religion, had the courage to practise, every year, the austerities of their Ramadan?

But their own conduct will be their loudest accuser.

These very persons, who persuade themselves that they have not strength enough to bear the abstinence and fasting of Lent even in their present mitigated form, think nothing of going through incomparably greater fatigues for the sake of temporal gains or worldly enjoyments. Constitutions which have broken down in the pursuit of pleasures which, to say the least, are frivolous, and always dangerous, would have kept up all their vigour, had the laws of God and His Church,

and not the desire to please the world, been the guide of their conduct. But such is the indifference wherewith this non-observance of Lent is treated, that it never excites the slightest trouble or remorse of conscience; and those who are guilty of it will argue with you, that people who lived in the middle ages may perhaps have been able to keep Lent, but that now-a-days it is out of the question: and they can coolly say this in the face of all that the Church has done to adapt her Lenten discipline to the physical and moral weakness of the present generation! How comes it that, whilst these men have been trained in, or converted to, the faith of their fathers, they can forget that the observance of Lent is an essential mark of Catholicity; and that when the Protestants undertook to reform her, in the sixteenth century, one of their chief grievances was that she insisted on her children mortifying themselves by fasting and abstinence. to be cont’d...
