THE HOLY FACE DEVOTION A Brief Timeline of Events Relating to the Holy Face and Holy Face Devotion ~33 AD: Veronica wipes Our Lord’s face with her veil and an image of His Holy Face miraculously appears on the veil. Veronica later passes the relic of the veil to Clement I (3rd successor of St. Peter). The relic of the veil was kept in catacombs for the next 3 centuries during persecutions of the Church. After that time, the Holy Veil was placed in the church that was constructed over the tomb of St. Peter (later to become the Basilica of St. Peter).

The Holy Veil has since been kept intact throughout the centuries.

1843-1847: Sister Mary of St. Peter, a Carmelite nun in Tours France experiences a series of revelations from Our Lord about a powerful devotion He wished to be established worldwide - the devotion to His Holy Face. The express purpose of this devotion was to make reparation for the numerous blasphemies and profanities taking place in the world but was also established as a means through which we can all appeal to God for anything we wish.

1848: Sister Mary of St. Peter passes away in the odour of sanctity on July 8. Just before her death she was able to relay the details of her 5 years of revelations to the local bishop in Tours, France. She was also able to share the information

with a friend named Leo Dupont, a retired lawyer in Tours, France.

1849: Shortly after the death of Sister Mary of St. Peter, Pope Pius IX ordered public prayers be offered in all churches in Rome to implore God’s mercy on the Papal States due to revolution occurring at the time. As part of these public prayers, a three-day exposition of the relic of Veronica’s veil was held for public veneration at St. Peter’s Basilica. On the third day of the showing, January 6, 1849, a miracle occurred through which Our Lord’s face on the veil became very distinct and glowed with a soft light. The Canons of the Basilica ordered the bells rung at sight of the miracle, which attracted crowds of people.

The miracle lasted for three hours, was attested to by an apostolic notary during the incident, and was documented in the daybook of the Vatican Basilica.

That same evening, detailed copies of the effigy were made, and were touched to the relic of Veronica’s veil, to a relic of the true cross, and to the lance which pierced Christ’s side, and were later sent abroad. In years to come, a custom was followed in the Vatican where further copies of the image on Veronica’s veil were created in the Vatican each year in the same manner, and sent abroad as relics of special devotion.

1851-1876: Leo Dupont obtained one of the Holy Face relics created in the Vatican, and placed it on the mantle in his parlour, keeping a crystal oil lamp burning continuously in front of it as a sign of veneration. He began privately praying the Holy Face prayers (obtained from Sister Mary of St. Peter) with friends and acquaintances in front of the image. Soon afterward, miraculous healings began to occur with the

friends and acquaintances who said the devotional prayers (the “Golden Arrow Prayer” and “Litany of the Holy Face”), and who anointed themselves with the oil from the lamp in front of the image.

Due to the repeated miracles that happened from that point forward, Leo DuPont’s parlor soon became a place of pilgrimage, and word quickly passed throughout France.

These miracles continued for 30 years, even past the death of Leo Dupont, and were so numerous that Pope Pius IX declared Leo Dupont to be perhaps one of the greatest miracle workers in Church history!

1877: After the death of Leo Dupont, his home became the Oratory of the Holy Face.

1885: While devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus has always existed in some form or another, these revelations and miraculous occurrences lead to this special devotion being established by Pope Leo XIII as an Archconfraternity; and contrary to custom, He immediately established it for the ENTIRE WORLD. 1885-1897: It was a well-known fact the St. Therese of Lisieux and her family registered as members of the Archconfraternity of Reparation to the Holy Face at Tours France and that St. Therese herself was so devoted to this that she added the title to her name at the time she took the habit. This is why you will often see St. Therese referred to as St. Therese of the Child Jesus “and of the Holy Face”.

1910: On April 27, 1910, Pope Saint Pius X approves the Feast of the Image of the Holy Face, with Rite of greater Double in the Third Feria, after the Sunday of Quinquagesima (Shrove Tuesday) for the diocese of Cambrai, France.

Today: Unfortunately, the Holy Face devotion was slowly forgotten around World War I. In the revelations to Sister Mary of St. Peter, Our Lord was very specific in stating the extreme importance of this devotion for making reparation to God, for holding back the justice of God during the evils of our day, and for obtaining the resolution to all of the problems in our families.

Dear Lord, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, I (we) offer You these prayers in reparation for the sins which offend God the most in these modern times-the sins of BLASPHEMY and the PROFANATION OF SUNDAY and Your Holy Days of Obligation: One Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be To The Father

After receiving this prayer, Sister Mary of St. Peter was given a vision in which she saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus delightfully wounded by this “Golden Arrow”, as torrents of graces streamed from It far the conversion of sinners.

I salute Thee, I adore Thee and I love Thee, O adorable Face of Jesus, my Beloved, noble Seal of the Divinity! Outraged anew by blasphemers. I offer Thee, through the heart of Thy blessed Mother, the worship of all the Angels and Saints, most humbly beseeching Thee to repair and renew in me and in all men Thy Image disfigured by sin.

The Case for an Infant King Tara K. E. Brelinsky During a retreat I attended, the priest offered a correction that changed my perspective on life and faith. Simple and direct, his one-line instruction challenged the ideals I’d accepted as true and set me on a course toward a deeper union with Christ, the Infant King.

A women’s silent retreat, the chapel was filled with women, mostly mothers. As females, we tend to be doers, helpers, caretakers. We raise children and run households. We support others and make our way in the world. We’re the prayer warriors, the organisers, and the volunteers.

Watching, it occurred to me that the man, St. Joseph, had crafted a fine cradle for his expected child. In the months before this night, he’d put to use his skills as a master carpenter and built a sound bed of hardwood.

He’d lovingly designed and planned, cut and sanded, built and carved a one-of-a-kind crib for Mary’s baby.

What joy it must have given him to utilise his talents in service to his growing family.

And, if we’re honest, most of us would admit that we see our role as the linchpin, the one who serves to hold it all together. Most of us believe that our input, specifically our actions, determines the end result in our marriages, our families, our workplaces, our relationships, our churches, and the world at large.

Abandoning Well-Crafted Plans But travel for the census meant leaving the beautiful cradle behind. It meant abandoning his wellcrafted plans for provision for his spouse and child.

Furthermore, it meant accepting the lowly invitation to a stable when no one else was willing to offer a more suitable place for the Child’s birth.

Of course, this belief, that we are responsible for the success or failure of all things within our scope of reach, isn’t just a feminine mindset. Men, also, cling to this vision.

So, wanting to aid his beloved wife in the less-thanideal circumstances, Joseph had to improvise with the supplies on hand (meagre, second-hand supplies). He

It Packed a Punch I suppose that’s why our priestly director offered us such words of wisdom. “It doesn’t all depend on you,” he said. A simple statement, but one that packed a punch.

It doesn’t all depend on you, or me, or anyone – alone.

As a twenty-first-century woman, as a home schooling parent, as a Catholic living in post-Christendom, selfsufficiency and autonomy are foundational principles on which I’ve constructed my understanding of who I am and who I am meant to be. Yet, as the director pointed out, that attitude needed dismantling or at least re-orienting.

So it was with this internal struggle in my mind that I asked the Holy Spirit to renew my perspective. And I found myself led into a meditation on the nativity of Christ. Now, as words rather than pictures are my ordinary mode of expression, I was surprised by the experience that followed.

Back to Bethlehem My mind’s eye transported me back to Bethlehem, back to a cold, dark night outside a roughly constructed stable. There, I stood peering through splintered boards at an other-worldly scene. I saw a humbly dressed man with a coarse brush in his calloused hand scraping

The Tear As my daydream continued, I saw Joseph finish the long, arduous task of cleaning and fill the now-hollowed space with fresh, pungent hay. Then, I witnessed him drag the heavy manger beside his dear, young wife and instruct her to lay the Babe down.

At that moment, I spied the beautiful Blessed Mother’s obedience as she wrapped the Child a little tighter in the swaddling cloths and placed His tender body on the rough straw. With a mix of joy and sorrow on her radiant face, I watched a single tear escape her eye and fall upon the Baby’s cheek.

Entering In Inspired by the tender scene of family life, I felt drawn into the stable, too. I envisioned myself as a young girl slipping around the open doorway and eventually coming to rest on my knees beside the Christ Child’s bed. Peace, joy, and awe flooded my heart and mind as I contemplated the reality that God had truly entered into human history as a helpless newborn.

There was so much more that I experienced during that meditation, but the overwhelming lesson was

an understanding of the need to rekindle devotion to Christ, the Infant King.

Focusing on the adult ministry of Jesus is indeed necessary. We must ruminate on the gospels, model His works, and contemplate His Passion and death.

But as a people who have become so attached to self-sufficiency, worldly knowledge, and personal achievement, focusing only on Christ’s self-directed actions too easily confirms our misguided belief that we are the catalysts of motion. We then erroneously draw the conclusion.

However, Jesus first came as our Infant King. The omnipotent God came in total humility, deprivation, and silence. The One Who made all came vulnerable to all.

An Infant- Tiny, Delicate, Wholly Dependent In art, images of the Christ Child typically depict a chubby toddler or a small, hardy-looking child. And while Jesus did grow to match those forms, He didn’t begin that way. He began as all newborns do: tiny, delicate, and wholly dependent on others.

Why would our Creator choose to enter into human history in such a manner? Why would the Divine King Who commands the planets to revolve and the

sun to shine come first as One Who couldn’t lift His own head? Why else but to teach us the enduring value of utter poverty, complete detachment, and unwavering trust.

No human stage of growth is as capable of expressing the realities of complete dependency as that of infancy. And God chose this stage to begin His work of salvation. He chose to memorialise it in scripture so as to give us a model for our own faith.

Providence’s Provisions While St. Joseph had to supply the man-power for cleaning that make-shift crib, he was dependent on Providence for every provision (from the stable to the manger, from the inspiration to the straw).

Just so, I also have to do the work assigned to me for my state in life, but I must do it with the realisation that God is the true Source of every good action, the Provider of every need.

My heart beats and my lungs draw breath without my conscious decision, but still, the world is fond of teaching that I am my own master and control is mine for the taking. And how readily I cleave to that idea.

However, that dear young Mother in the stable left a shining example of how to live life in a sincere union.

Humbly, obediently, she followed where she was led without complaint because she knew that it didn’t all depend on her or Joseph.

Indeed, from the first utterance of her fiat, that opening which allowed God to enter into human history, it was God Who begat Jesus and it was He Who ordered all things after for the Holy Family.

That tear, I was privileged to see in my dreaming, was a reminder that obedience and humility bear a cost.

But what small price are sorrows and hard things when weighed against the salvation they secure?

St Joseph’s Supernatural Staircase Mary O’Regan Wednesday is the day of St Joseph, and for this year of 2022, occasionally I’d like to remember spectacular miracles of the FosterFather of Jesus on this day. Here, I’m giving my attention to the miraculous staircase in New Mexico that is a grand example of what may happen after only one novena to St Joseph is offered.

It was the year 1873, the Sisters of Loretto in Sant Fe, New Mexico were running a girls’ school, which was drawing many pupils, so much so that the sisters needed to accommodate the growing numbers by building a new chapel.

They sought the services of a famous French architect, Antoine Mouly, who designed and oversaw the construction for five years.

Alas, Mouly died before the stairs connecting the chapel to the upper choir loft could be envisioned. The sisters in their floor-length pleated skirts could only access the loft by climbing on a long ladder that was treacherous. They also realised that there was no room for a staircase because of the many pews that were needed for the congregation.

The sisters began a 9-day novena to St Joseph, praying for the intention that he, the man who had brought Jesus into the carpentry trade, could send them a carpenter. On the

9th day of the prayer, a man who seemed most inscrutable came to the door. He said he wanted to build them their staircase on one request.

He wanted to work in secret with no one watching him. The sisters saw the hand of Divine Providence in this man, and they agreed to his offer.

For 3 months the man toiled. The day that an exquisite helix-shaped

stairwell was complete, the man was nowhere to be found. It was like he disappeared into thin air.

Throughout these 90 days, no one had learned his name. His language was silence. Then the sisters even put an advert in the local paper to find him. No one knew anything.

Next, the sisters tried to trace the wood that they assumed had been purchased nearby or at least was

grown in America. When they went to the lumberyard, the men who worked there had no record of selling any timber to a man who wanted to build a staircase for a chapel. The sisters were astonished and they talked about how odd it was that the carpenter had only used the most ordinary tools, and yet he’d built a mesmerising masterwork, it curved in such a way as it didn’t crowd the pews that they had guarded, and it had 30 steps with no load-bearing column and had this weightless quality whereby it seemed to hover in the air. And not one nail or any type of metal attachment had been used in the stairs construction, rather it was joined by square wooden pegs. The wood used was not native to the US. Later it was determined to be a variety of spruce that is most like a tree only found in Israel.

Entertain the idea, if you will, with me, because I’m developing my faith here, too, that were we to offer novenas to St Joseph, the results could be simply astounding. All of us, especially in these craziest of crazy times have widely differing prayer requests, some of utmost urgency, and St Joseph is perhaps more needed than ever. It’s helping me to keep the staircase in mind, even though I’m not praying for anything like this, and to know that answered prayers can be as wondrous.

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.

Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

And as every error contains its element of truth, the partial truths to which We have referred are astutely presented according to the needs of time and place, to conceal, when convenient, the repulsive crudity and inhumanity of Communistic principles and tactics.

Thus the Communist ideal wins over many of the better minded members of the community.

These in turn become the apostles of the movement among the younger intelligentsia who are still too immature to recognise the intrinsic errors of the system.

The preachers of Communism are also proficient in exploiting racial antagonisms and political divisions and oppositions.

They take advantage of the lack of orientation characteristic of modern agnostic science in order to burrow into the universities, where they bolster up the principles of their doctrine with pseudo-scientific arguments. …There is another explanation for the rapid diffusion of the Communistic ideas now seeping into every nation, great and small, advanced and backward, so that no corner of the earth is free from them.

This explanation is to be found in a propaganda so truly diabolical that the world has perhaps never witnessed its like before. It is directed from one common centre.

The Patron Saint Of The Unborn Larry Peterson

Ironically, the Patron Saint of the Unborn is a Young Man The Annual March for Life occurs each year, and tens upon tens of thousands will march in defence of the unborn. Many expectant women, however, scared and unsure of their situation, most likely will avoid the march.

If you know an expectant mother who is feeling afraid or unsure, you might suggest that she turn to a young man for help. The young man is the Patron Saint of Unborn Children and Expectant Mothers, and many miracles have been attributed his intervention. His name is Gerard Majella.

Gerard was the youngest child born to Domenico and Benedetta Majella.

They had three daughters, and Gerard was their only son, born April 6, 1726.

The Majellas were a hard-working Italian family. Benedetta brought her children to Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Graces as often as she could.

Gerard, only three, loved the “pretty lady with the baby.”

“See what I got from the little boy” When Gerard got a bit older, he would run off to the shrine by himself. The first time he came home, he yelled out, “Mama, mama, see what I got from the little boy.” In his hand, he held a small loaf of bread. No one paid much attention, but after several days of coming home with bread, his mum (some sources say his sister) followed him to see where he was getting the bread.

What she saw stunned her because the statue of Our Lady of Graces came to life and the child she was holding scampered down to play with Gerard. She quickly left and, sure enough, when Gerard came home, he had another small loaf of bread with him. Gerard’s family kept this to themselves.

Gerard’s dad died when the boy was twelve, and the family was left in poverty. Gerard’s father had been a tailor, so his mom apprenticed Gerard to a tailor so he could learn the trade. However, four years into his apprenticeship, Gerard was

offered the job as a servant for the local Bishop of Lacedonia. Needing the money, he took the position.

The Bishop kept hearing stories about Gerard and his kindness – how he would always stop and visit the poor in the clinic, how he always helped others, and how he even brought the poor leftovers from the bishop’s table. The young man was gaining a reputation just by being himself.

“I want to be a saint” Gerard returned to his trade as a tailor when the Bishop passed away.

He divided his earnings among his mother, the poor, and with offerings for the souls in purgatory. By the time he was 21 years-old, he had established a steady business, but his mom was quite worried about her son. He looked thin and frail because he was always fasting and doing penance. She begged him to eat, and he told her, “Mama, God will provide. As for me, I want to be a saint.”

Gerard tried to join the Capuchins, but they thought him too sickly to endure the demands of the order.

Finally, after much pleading and nagging, he was accepted as a lay brother into the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, aka The Redemptorists.

As a lay brother, Gerard would never be a priest, say Mass, or hear confessions. He would live under the same roof, wear the same habit, and share the prayers. He also would take the vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience. He would be a caretaker to the monastery. He embraced this role and served them well, acting as a gardener, sacristan, porter, cook, carpenter, and, of course, the tailor.

And there were always the children.

They flocked to Gerard to hear his amazing stories and learn how to pray. Once, when a large group was sitting around listening to him, a little boy fell off a cliff. When they reached the child, they thought he was dead.

Gerard said to the boy’s father, “It is nothing.” Then he traced a cross on the boy’s forehead, and the boy awoke. It was just one of Gerard’s many miracles that people witnessed.

Gerard had tuberculosis and died on October 16, 1755. He was just 29 years old.

Many miracles have been attributed to his intercession. One, however, stands out as the reason Gerard has become the patron saint of expectant mothers.

A few months before his death, he was visiting friends. When he was leaving he dropped his handkerchief.

One of the daughters picked it up to return it to him. He told her to keep it because one day, she would need it.

Years later, as a married woman, she was about to give birth but the doctor was sure she would not survive. She remembered the handkerchief and asked for it. When she held it to her womb, all of her pain disappeared and she gave birth to a healthy baby.

There was no explanation.

In 1893 Pope Leo XIII beatified Gerard. And on December 11, 1904, Pope St. Pius X canonised him in Rome. He was now St. Gerard Majella.

St. Gerard is the patron saint of unborn children, expectant mothers, and motherhood.

St. Gerard, please pray for all those pre-born children in danger of losing their lives and for expectant mothers everywhere.

Let us pray that they will take a supernatural outlook on the problems that we are facing and that they will realise that without Christ, we can do nothing.

I heard of the Death of Alice von Hildebrand just before I began writing this article. She was born Alice Marie Jourdain, in Belgium, in 1923 and escaped to America in 1940 during the Nazi occupation.

It was in America that she met and married Dietrich von Hildebrand, the great Catholic philosopher.

Alice was a champion of the Catholic family and of a true understanding of femininity. She also carried on the legacy of her husband Dietrich in defending the traditional Catholic Mass.

Her death caused me to re-visit one of Dietrich von Hildebrand’s books - ‘The Devastated Vineyard’, which was a follow on from his book ‘The Trojan Horse in the City of God’.

The Devastated Vineyard was translated from the German back in 1973. The battle for the faith identified then continues to this day and is at a critical juncture now with the renewed attempts being made to suppress the ‘Mass of Ages’.

One of the difficulties that come with the passage of time is that those

whose living memories include a time when there was only a Latin Mass grow ever fewer in number whilst the number of Catholics who have never experienced the Latin Mass has increased exponentially.

In his introduction, von Hildebrand notes that the enemies of the Catholic Church no longer leave the Church but they work from within Church structures in order to destroy the faith of the people. He says; “Their systematic and artful undermining of the holy Church testifies clearly enough to the fact that this is a conscious conspiracy, involving Freemasons and Communists who, in spite of their differences and usual enmity in other matters, are working together toward this goal. For the Church is the arch-enemy of Freemasonry, and is the principal hindrance to the Communists in their conquest of the world. Naturally the Communists are incomparably more dangerous, but Freemasonry, though in theory not so clearly antithetical

to Christianity, is a welcome coworker in the fifth column.

The inconceivable thing is that this conspiracy exists within the Church, that there are bishops and even cardinals, and many priests and religious, who play the role of Judas.”

Von Hildebrand identifies two groups who are destroying the Catholic Church. The first group work for the ancient enemy of the Catholic Church and their goal is to destroy the Church. He points out that these enemies who once operated chiefly outside of the Catholic Church now operate from within. They pretend to be Catholic and often hold offices within the Catholic Church whilst seeking her destruction.

The second group identified by von Hildebrand are those who want to transform the Catholic Church in an effort to make her more appealing to the world. They want to turn the Church into a mere humanitarian society without any supernatural element. These people

do not want to destroy the church but they are dangerous because they really believe that the reforms they propose and implement will eventually lead to a re-awakening of the faith. However, these misguided people are actually helping the first group in that their false understandings of the purpose of the Catholic Church, which is first and foremost the salvation of souls, is slowly but surely leading to the collapse of the Catholic faith in the western world.

As von Hildebrand says of this second group - “But they have lost the true Christian faith to such an extent that they do not clearly understand that the secularised, humanitarian, organisation which they want to make of the holy Church would have nothing left in common with the Church of Jesus Christ.”

There is ample evidence of this lack of understanding when one witnesses the liturgical abuses that are regular features of the Novus Ordo celebrations of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

As Pope St John Paul II wrote in his Encyclical letter - ‘Ecclesia De Eucharistia’ - “At times one encounters an extremely reductive understanding of the Eucharistic mystery. Stripped of its sacrificial meaning, it is celebrated as if it were simply a fraternal banquet.”

Reading The Devastated Vineyard one realises that many things are still the same as in von Hildebrand’s time. His opening paragraph in chapter one on the lethargy of the Guardians, for example, could have been written about our Irish bishops who continue to ignore the entreaties of faithful Catholics for a reform of the Catholic schools My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee. I beg pardon of Thee for all those that do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen.

to make them fit for purpose once again.

Von Hildebrand writes, “One of the most horrifying and widespread diseases in the Church today is the lethargy of the guardians of the Faith of the Church. I am not thinking here of those bishops who are members of the “fifth column,” who wish to destroy the Church from within, or to transform it into something com­pletely different.

I am thinking of the far more numerous bishops who have no such intentions, but who make no use whatever of their authority when it comes to intervening against heretical theologians or priests, or against blasphemous performances of public worship.

They either close their eyes and try, ostrich-style, to ignore the grievous abuses as well as appeals to their duty to intervene, or they fear to be attacked by the press or the mass media and defamed as reactionary, narrow-minded, or medieval.

They fear men more than God. The words of St. John Bosco apply to them: “The power of evil men lives on the cowardice of the good.””

We see this cowardice in the silence of our bishops when it comes to the

promotion of the LGBT agenda in Catholic schools. One of the local Catholic secondary schools where I live, organised for a male ‘drag queen’ to give a presentation to the transition year students of the boys and girls Catholic secondary schools. This man is also an erotic strip dancer at a bawdy club which tours Ireland.

They also brought in a woman who had ‘married’ another woman after her husband had died, to give a presentation to the transition year students. Catholic parents who raised objections were told that the school was proud to be inclusive and welcoming. This is a Catholic school with an archbishop as patron, which is corrupting the minds and moral understanding of the Catholic children in their care.

From my research into this matter I can tell you that this is not an isolated incidence and there is a worldwide movement which seeks to indoctrinate children with a false understanding of human sexuality and to destroy their innocence.

The sad thing is that this lethargy of those in authority has infiltrated into the whole of western society.

Von Hildebrand notes that, “parents, college and university presidents, heads of numerous other organisations, judges, heads

of state, and others” are all affected by the lethargy and do nothing to fight against the moral corruption that has now pervaded all of western society. He then points out something that will be familiar to readers of Catholic Voice.

“But it is most especially infuriating when certain bishops, who themselves show this lethargy toward heretics, assume a rigorously authoritarian attitude toward those believers who are fighting for orthodoxy, and who are thus doing what the bishops ought to be doing themselves!” “... The drivel of the heretics, both priests and laymen, is tolerated; the bishops tacitly acquiesce to the poisoning of the faithful. But they want to silence the faithful believers who take up the cause of orthodoxy, the very people who should by all rights be the joy of the bishops’ hearts, their consolation, a source of strength for overcoming their own lethargy. Instead, these people are regarded as disturbers of the peace.

And should it happen that they get carried away in their zeal and express themselves in a tactless or exagger­ ated manner, they are even suspended.

This clearly shows the cowardice which is hidden behind the bishops’ failure to use their authority.

For they have nothing to fear from the orthodox; the orthodox do not control the mass media or the press; they are not the representatives of public opinion. And because of their submission to ecclesiastical authority, the fighters for orthodoxy will never be as aggressive as the so-called progressives. If they are reprimanded or disciplined, their bishops run no risk of being attacked by the liberal press.”

We have encountered this on the numerous occasions when we have written to our bishops, particularly about liturgical abuses. We encounter silence when we challenge our Irish bishops to reform the Catholic schools in their charge and to openly speak out against the LGBT indoctrination of children which gives the children a dangerous and distorted understanding of human sexuality. In later life, if these children act out on their now distorted understanding of human sexuality, they will be led to misery and great sadness in their personal lives.

Education. This new ‘morality’ goes under the name of ‘active consent’ and is being directed from the National University of Ireland, Galway, NUIG. They now have a team of twelve people, predominantly women (11 out of the 12) which includes Kate Dawson, who seeks to teach children what she calls ‘porn literacy’.

This involves looking at pornographic movies and using critical thinking skills in order to develop one’s understanding of sexual matters.

In the brief for a document titled ‘Toward a Model of Porn Literacy: Core Concepts, Rationales, and Approaches’ they state: “Findings suggest that the proposed learning outcomes should focus on reducing shame regarding pornography engagement and improving critical thinking skills regarding the following sexual health topics: body image comparisons and dissatisfaction; sexual and genderbased violence; fetishising of gay and transgender communities; and setting unrealistic standards for sex.

Methods of engagement for porn literacy, gendered differences, and important findings that are specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, plus (LGBT+) persons are discussed, and recommendations regarding future research and intervention development are outlined.”

The Galway group have also produced a play called ‘The Kinds of Sex You Might Have At College’. This play has been presented at third level colleges in Ireland and the description states: “The Kinds of Sex You Might Have At College is an original Active Consent play about what you want, how you want it, if you want it and what happens when you don’t. Performed by an energetic ensemble of actors, this theatrical performance brings you through a range of sketches about the kinds of sex you (might) have during your time at college.”

Because Covid-19 has restricted access to the colleges, they are now working to turn this play into a film which can be shown to students.

The ultimate basis of ‘active consent’ is that any and all sexual activity between unmarried college students is OK, provided all parties to the sexual activity have given their ‘active consent’. It is presented as a way of protecting students from unwanted sexual encounters but it will lead to further licentious behaviour amongst students who accept the false premise upon which the programme is based which is that ‘active consent’ is the main moral norm for engaging in sexual activity.

Parents might be shocked to learn that it is proposed to develop an ‘active consent’ module for use in both primary and secondary schools. In an Irish Independent article of 31st December 2021, is was stated that Education Minister Norma Foley said that consent needs to be taught ‘within a wider context of particular issues’. The education minister was reported as

implying that this will be featured in the new RSE programme which is set to be launched by September 2023.

Norma Foley also said, “Other areas looked at included, but were not limited to: developments in relation to contraception; healthy, positive, sexual expression and relationships; safe use of the internet; the role of school ethos; and LGBTQ+ matters,” There is no public opposition from the Irish bishops to these developments and these developments will be incorporated into the Catholic schools in Ireland unless Catholic parents stand up and defend their children from this corruption and insist that their bishops take an active role in defending children from these ideologically driven and dangerous forms of education.

It is also of interest to realise that these programmes are being

developed and the teachers’ training programmes are being organised and will be implemented without any meaningful consultation with Catholic parents.

However, it must also be noted that most ‘Catholic’ parents with school age children, have not been properly formed in their Catholic faith and will probably not raise any serious objections to these programmes given that they will be ‘sold’ on the basis that they are designed to protect children.

These programmes will lead in the longer term, to increased sexual activity amongst younger and younger age groups, and the resultant children conceived as a result of this will be exterminated under our current abortion legislation.

We are living in ever darkening times but we must never lose hope.

Catholic parents have been given the primary responsibility of protecting

PROTECTING CHILDREN 15 their children, but in a world where many people in authority no longer accept scientifically verifiable realities regarding human sexuality, Catholic parents will often find little to no support from those in authority, including those in authority in the Catholic Church.

Once again this shows the need for sincere Catholic parents to organise family networks so that their children can be raised with a full understanding of the Catholic faith.

We are hoping to get back on the road in the near future and I have been asked to make some presentations in Northern Ireland.

Please pray for the organisers of these meetings so that they will go ahead and that we will be able to reach Catholic parents and to update them on the reality of what is being proposed for their school age children.

When Satan Torments The Mind Msgr. Stephen Rossetti I continued to be saddened by the number of people who suffer from mental torments. I daily receive frantic emails from people who are at their wits end. They have been mentally tormented for years and are losing hope.

These mental obsessions typically begin with a “normal” psychological weakness: low selfesteem, depressive thinking, dark ruminations, anxiety and fear, frustrations and anger.

However, Satan then takes advantage of this human weakness and exaggerates it. Our low selfesteem becomes self-hatred; our anxiety becomes despair; our dark rumination becomes suicidal ideation. What should have been a typical daily irritant now becomes a full blown crisis.

Satan’s denigrating messages to us center around six common themes: “You are a terrible person”, “There is no hope for you”, “God doesn’t care about you”, “This torment will never end”, “You are going to hell”, “You should kill yourself.”

These demonic obsessions are doubly dangerous because Satan is usually able to hide behind a person’s psychic flaws. Individuals do not realize the demonic source and thus they are even more convinced of their hopeless wretchedness. They may sink further into despair.

O Jesus, it is for the love of Thee, in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and for the conversion of poor sinners [that I do this]. Amen.

Yes, you have underlying psychological weaknesses which makes you

vulnerable to these negative ruminations.

But Satan is tormenting you with them. Once people can recognise the action of the Evil One, they may feel less culpable and more emotionally distant from them. +Let them come Let them come....and let them go.

Many people find it difficult just to stop these mental obsessions.

In fact, the more one tries to stop them, the stronger they often become. Rather, offer no resistance. Let them come in one ear, and let them go out the other ear. Try not to latch onto them.

Offer your suffering for others.

We all have our own sufferings.

Some people have great physical sufferings. You have great mental sufferings. These mental torments, when given to Jesus in faith, can be a source of grace for others, and for you.

Breathe and relax. Our bodies tense up when we are stressed.

Take long, slow deep breaths.

Inhale slowly, exhale slowly.

Breathe deeply. Exercise the body by walking or whatever exercise works for you. When the body relaxes, it helps the mind relax. +Close the door Close the door to the demonic.

However, the barminess of the jury at Bristol Crown Court whose members saw fit to acquit four White, smug, privileged, bourgeois, Marxists from cushy backgrounds of the criminal damage they had caused by violently overthrowing the 200-year-old statue of a local benefactor and flinging it into the harbour went further than most.

A precedent has been set. Perhaps I shall try my own hand at iconoclasm, now that the law approves of it, by taking a sledgehammer to the statue of Karl Marx that stands grimly above his tomb in the grimy, wind-blown cemetery of an inconsiderable north London borough.

they would reply, as the Marxists of Jesus College, Cambridge have done, that it is the legacy of slavery in the olden days that they oppose, not the reality of slavery today; for the latter is a near-exclusively Marxist sin.

Jesus College, whose appalling Fellows are bought and paid for by the Chinese Communist Party, has a Legacy of Slavery Committee. But that committee studiously avoids asking questions about the Party’s present-day unlawful occupation of Tibet, the enslavement of its entire population, many of whom are forced to interbreed with their Han Chinese masters, or the incarceration of millions of Muslim Uyghurs in the vast, brutal concentration camps of Sinkiang.

The Marxists who founded Black Lives Matter were unwise enough to admit at the outset that they were doing what they were doing because they were Marxists. They did not actually care about Black

The Taiwanese people have responded with delight by ordering unprecedented quantities of Lithuanian rum, chocolate and other goodies (for the Lithuanians live well), and the economy of that doughty little Baltic state, whose citizens were once themselves enslaved under the Marxist jackboot of Moscow, is justifiably booming as a result.

And what would the middle-class, middle-brow, muddle-minded Marxist iconoclasts of Bristol have to say about the KGB-old-guard government of Vladimir Putin, as its troops mass on the borders of the Ukraine, whose government has committed the sin of considering an application to join NATO? Putin and his thousands of KGB gerontocrats long to re-enslave those nations that broke free of the Soviet tyranny when the Berlin Wall came down. And they may not stop there. Both Sweden and Finland, alarmed at Putin’s sabrerattling in their direction too, are now seriously considering coming into the NATO family. They, like Ukraine, would be most welcome.

Some biliuos, far-Right commentators have wittered on about how wrong it is to judge the slavers of old by the different standards of today. They are wrong.

For Christianity has been gloriously with us for more than two millennia.

The central message of the Lord of Life in the New Testament, as of His dad in the Old, was this: “Thou shalt love.”

For this reason, all the brutal slavers of old were no less morally repugnant in their day than the Communist slave-running regimes of our day, such as the Russian and Chinese tyrannies.

The real crime of the Bristol statuesmashers was the totalitarian mindset, born of their unthinking Marxist belief, that led them to apply a monstrous double standard, tearing down the statues of slavers long buried while fawning dutifully upon the far more brutal slavers of today. For that double standard, they should have been locked up for a long, long time.

But let us meet the Bristol Marxists on their own terms, and look the other way as Russia and China seek to enslave more and more people, and examine only the legacy of slavery – the slavery of the past.

Working Through Our Guilt?

It is unfortunate that many parishes report a decline in the numbers of Catholics coming to Confession.

Is this an indication of the kind of spirituality that believes in self-administered healing? If it is, then it also lacks belief in the supernatural. In the present day it is perceived difficult to approach a priest in the confession box, admit transgressions and ask for forgiveness. What is the advantage of telling a priest what we have done wrong when he may not be particularly understanding or have much time for us?

If this is the only understanding of what happens in Confession it is no surprise that at least some people will prefer to pay a trained counsellor and “work through” their guilt or other problems in a fifty minute session.

We need to remind ourselves that going to the Sacrament of Penance is not a therapeutic exercise where we admit our faults. It is not the advice we receive from the priest that is important but the healing remedy that only Jesus Christ, in the person of the priest, can administer.

This healing is many faceted.

The first and most important part is that when we sincerely repent of our sins, we are absolved from them. Pope Saint John XXIII in his autobiography, explains that the mercy of our gracious Lord is not just a feeling in the heart; it is an abundance of gifts.

The following quotation shows the wealth of mercy available through the sacrament of Penance: When we consider how many graces are poured into the sinner’s soul along with God’s forgiveness,

we feel ashamed. These are: the loving remission of our offence; the new infusion of sanctifying grace, given as to a friend, as to a son; the reintegration of the gifts, habits and virtues associated with the grace; the restitution of our right to heaven; the restoration of the merits we had earned before our sin; the increase of grace which this forgiveness adds to former graces; the increase of gifts which grow in proportion to the growth of grace just as the rays of the sun increases as it rises, and the rivulets are wider as the fountain overflows.

Confession is unique among the sacraments because it can be administered anywhere, at any time.

Here we have one of the reasons why it is important that priests can

be easily identified by their clerical clothing. Stories have been reported of distressed men and women who approached a priest in a restaurant, a train or even on the street, to have their confession heard.

The effect of absolution is immediate, depending only on sincere repentance and the carrying out of the prescribed penance.

Repentance is fundamental to our union with Christ in the Eucharist but it is only in the special sacrament instituted by Christ and carried out in the Church that grievous sins are forgiven. In common with all the sacraments, Penance or Reconciliation is a liturgical action.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains how the sacrament of Penance can take different forms.

However the usual way is by individual confession to a priest within the framework of the sacrament. Here the penitent becomes reconciled with God and with the Body of Christ, which is the Church. Our understanding of liturgy shows us that it is Christ himself who is working in our souls in each of the sacraments.

The source of all forgiveness is God the Father. The reconciliation that takes place between the penitent and God is brought into effect by the Paschal mystery and the gift of the Holy Spirit. But it is through the agency of the Catholic Church that it takes effect in the soul of the person who, having confessed his sins, expresses sorrow for them.

He is the physician tending each one of the sick who need him to cure them. He raises them up and reintegrates them into fraternal communion. Personal confession is thus the form most expressive of reconciliation with God and with the Church. (CCC 1484)

The authority for this comes directly from Jesus Christ who appeared to his apostles on the day of his resurrection from the dead. Having greeted them he showed them the wounds in his body. He told them that he was sending them out as the Father had sent him.

While this is perhaps most apparent in individual Confession, it is also permitted that the sacrament of Penance be celebrated as a community of believers. In the communal celebration of the sacrament, penitents are instructed to prepare themselves by means of the examination of conscience.

After saying this he breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.” (Jn.20:19).

If we proclaim the Lord’s death, we proclaim the forgiveness of sins.

If, as often as his blood is poured out, it is poured for the forgiveness of sins, I should always receive it, so that it may always forgive my sins. Because I always sin, I should always have a remedy.

The people of God implore his forgiveness and express this in the public recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. Individual confession and absolution are inserted into the liturgy by means of the reading of passages from scripture so that the ecclesial nature of the sacrament is expressed. As one, the community gives thanks for the forgiveness received in unity with brothers and sisters in Christ.

This of course is not to be confused with general absolution which is only permitted in cases of grave necessity or danger. General absolution carries with it the obligation to avail of individual confession at the first opportunity.

Personal sin affects the Body of Christ, to which all Catholics in the state of grace belong.

Regardless therefore, of its manner of celebration, the sacrament of Penance is always, by its very nature liturgical, and therefore it is an ecclesial and public action. As we are all sinners there is always a need for a remedy. When we are in the state of grace, the remedy for venial sin is available to us during the Mass which St. Ambrose names as healing grace.

Charity And Vaccines - Part 1 Fr Ambrose Astor

Having established that both conscience and prudence forbid the reception of COVID-19 vaccines, Father Ambrose now explains, especially for priests, why getting vaccinated is not the “loving thing to do”. (Fr Ambrose writes under a pseudonym to protect his Catholic ministry) If there is one adjective the common sentiment identifies with a good Christian, it is no doubt “loving”.

A good Christian, in imitation of Christ, seeks to love all, especially those in need. This objective notion of charity however, particularly in the current climate, is easily contorted into a subjective notion based on emotions and feelings.

Over the last two years a number of attitudes that contravene basic medical principles and human rights have been promoted under the guise of a false charity – from wearing masks, to the lockdown of the healthy, the isolating of the sick at home until they deteriorate, and the abandonment of the elderly in order to ‘protect them’ – the list of ‘loving things to do’ grows longer.

More recently the ‘loving thing to do’ is to get vaccinated – the rationale being that by doing so we are protecting the lives of others.

A number of prelates have exploited this noble Christian sentiment by ignoring objective moral and medical facts. If we truly love our neighbour, they tell us, we must leave behind our preferences, accept any disadvantages, and take the jab.

Then we will be showing that we really care about others, for then we will be protecting them from a deadly virus. Some of these prelates even refer to a ‘moral obligation’ to take the vaccine. Conversely, the refusal to do so would be proof of egotism and self-love, turning the other way and exposing others to risk. What are we to make of this?

At face value, if one accepts the current narrative, it seems to make perfect sense.

However, St Paul tells us that it is not permissible to do evil so that good may come of it (Romans 3:8).

This is a very important concept with vast consequences for the present question. In Article 1 of this series Conscience and Vaccines1, we learned that all vaccines presently available have been developed from cell lines obtained by the vivisection and murder of a human foetus. The conclusion was that, even though a case can be made in certain extreme situations for an ethical use of such vaccines by what the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has called remote, material cooperation, the grave conditions required for this do not ordinarily exist and therefore one cannot in good conscience receive these vaccines.

In the second article of this series Prudence and Vaccines2, we considered a number of other medical issues such as the startling lack of safety or efficacy of these vaccines – which in reality are properly termed gene therapies – and also their potential to facilitate and spread disease as well as permanently alter the human

immune system (and other parts of the human genome) at the genetic level. We also considered ethical issues around the grave violation of the Natural Law and the Nuremberg Code, and social issues around the creation of a two-tiered system of ‘medical apartheid’ which evokes comparisons with dark periods of history such as the segregation of Jews in Nazi Germany. The conclusion was that it is gravely imprudent to take the risk of receiving the vaccine.

We now arrive at considerations on the virtue of Charity which, in order to be authentic, must be based on objective truth. St Maximilian Kolbe, who died a victim of the Nazi ideology which began with methods of control very similar to those being enforced today, wrote: ‘No one in the world can change Truth. What we can do and should do is to seek truth and to serve it when we have found it. The real conflict is the inner conflict. Beyond armies of occupation and the hecatombs of extermination camps, there are two

28th January 2022 irreconcilable enemies in the depth of every soul: good and evil, sin and love. And what use are the victories on the battlefield if we ourselves are defeated in our innermost personal selves?’ Keeping this background in mind, let us now turn to the queen of virtues, charity.

Q. First of all, what is charity, and is there an order to be observed in its practice?

A. As an infused virtue, charity inclines us to love God above all things in the same way as He loves Himself and to love all things that God loves in the same way that He loves them. God is to be loved first, above all things, and His commandments always take precedence over any other considerations, however urgent they might be: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment (Matthew 22:37-38). Committing a sin against

Catholic Voice God can never be tolerated in any circumstances, for to commit sin is to offend God and therefore it is to fail to love Him. If you love me, keep my commandments, Our Lord tells His apostles. (John 14:15) Second, one must love one’s neighbour as one’s self, which implies that love for oneself precedes love for neighbour. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself (Matthew 22:39). To love neighbour is to love him as God loves him, and to want what is really good for him, namely what makes him a virtuous person and helps him save his soul.

Two very important consequences follow from this. The first is that to do for our neighbour anything that is sinful cannot be a true manifestation of love. The second is that it’s not about doing things that make me feel good about myself, but things that really are of benefit to my neighbour. Since

the notion of charity can be easily influenced by subjective feelings, it is essential to be attentive to the objective order of the good in order to ascertain whether or not an action is truly charitable. For example, Catholic parents whose baptised child intends to marry in a civil ceremony outside the Church may want to support their child’s decision and attend the ceremony in order to ‘keep the peace’.

Objective charity, however, demands that these parents inform their child that they cannot attend the ceremony due to the demands of the moral law. This would of course cause emotional discomfort for both child and parents, but objectively speaking the parents are doing the loving thing because their action is putting the spiritual welfare of their child first, sowing the seeds for their conversion and salvation.

24 CHARITY & VACCINES soul, then the salvation of my neighbour’s soul, and finally my own physical welfare and that of my neighbour. Since the needs of the soul take precedence, we should be prepared to sacrifice physical welfare for spiritual benefits, both for ourself and for our neighbour.

This is precisely why we must never do anything that would lead our neighbour to sin, for if we truly love someone, then we will be concerned with helping them attain their supernatural end for which purely natural means are insufficient. Speaking the truth to souls tactfully and at the right moment is loving them in truth. It is truth that leads to freedom, and we should want for true freedom and love of God to be shared by those we love. In other words, one cannot show authentic love to someone and at the same time approve of what is objectively wrong.

Our life in this world is brief, lasting only a few years. Our soul will live forever, either eternally happy with God in heaven or eternally wretched in hell. There are no considerations of health of the body that are of any consequence when the soul is at stake. This is why, for example, a mother cannot abort her child even to preserve her own life, or a person cannot consent to euthanise their parent in order to put an end to their sufferings. To violate

God’s commandments would be a proof of a misguided love that puts ephemeral survival and comfort above eternal salvation.

Q. Why does taking the vaccine violate charity?

A. Given the mounting medical evidence and the knowledge of the moral issues surrounding the foetal cells, taking the jab and encouraging others to take it, far from being an act of love, clearly and objectively violates the most fundamental precept of charity.

It violates love for God who said: Thou shalt not kill. It violates love for the baby whose organs made the vaccine possible. It violates love for one’s own soul by sinning against conscience and against one’s body.

It violates the right of others to see in us a good example and not to be scandalised by us.

Q. In the article on Conscience, you explored the fact that the vaccines were generated and/ or tested on cells procured from an aborted foetus. It was my understanding that receiving them only involved remote, material cooperation. Are you not contradicting the Holy See? A. The aim of this article is not to contradict the Holy See, who is the supreme authority on this question, but to offer further reflection in order to demonstrate that the

instructions given to date form only a partial view of the matter.3 The confusion comes from not sufficiently considering what, in moral theology, we call the ‘moral object’ of the action which here is the taking of the vaccine. It is not so much about the original abortions, or the research performed on the dead foetuses, or the marketing of the medicines derived therefrom.

All these actions are extremely grave, and we must make every effort to unmask the magnitude of the machine of evil we are involved in. This is why the horror of it was stressed in the first article. Too many people, even among priests and bishops, have grown accustomed to abortion that they need to have their consciences pricked.

The real problem from a strictly moral point of view lies precisely in the fact that, however remote the original abortion, or the laboratory research or the pharmaceutical marketing, might be in time and space, there is a proximate link between the recipient of the vaccine and the dead baby, that link being the residual components of the cell lines that belong to the baby and which the recipient is benefitting from in his own body thanks to the vaccine.4 In other terms, the moral object of taking a vaccine to protect one’s

28th January 2022 health (this is a good moral object in itself) is vitiated by the circumstance that the vaccine came directly from the immoral abuse of an innocent person and includes something of that person. That is the precise problem which the Holy See has yet to address. In its note of 20th December 2020 it refers to ‘formal cooperation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines derive’. It does not consider the specific problem of the stolen matter that is in some way still present in the vaccine, and for which some form of restitution must be made.

Of course, one might bring up examples from manuals of moral theology concerning remote material cooperation. However, it can be argued that they do not apply, for the simple reason that this is an entirely new problem which demands a new answer. Never before have we been able to steal from a baby such vital elements that, due to their living efficaciousness, are used to (purportedly) furnish billions of people with the means of fighting a virus, and this for decades. Never before has it been possible to exploit a human being in this way. Institutional slavery is far behind. Even cannibalism is less grave than this, for when human flesh is consumed, it nourishes for but a short time. Here we have human remains that, after being abused in a laboratory, are now used – against the will of their owner – to serve indefinitely someone else’s life. Such is the crux of the matter.

It is also important to consider that the reception of these gene therapy vaccines is an offence against charity for the other foetuses who will be murdered because of the vaccine industry which is being pushed forward by the present vaccines. This was explored in more detail in Article 1. It is not an assumption, but a reality proven by studies in contemporary medical journals, which affirm that drugs such as molnupiravir have been tested on ‘Lung only mice’ and calls for the testing of future

Catholic Voice COVID-19 vaccines on these same mice grafted with human foetal organs (these humans die from the vivisection and organ harvesting method). In other words, the very fact that the presently available vaccines are manufactured and/or tested through aborted foetal cells increases the demand for even more vaccines and medications of the kind. So not only is taking the jab a sin against the original infant who was murdered, but it also endangers many other babies who will die, offered like victims to Moloch, the bloodthirsty Canaanite god to whom were sacrificed human babies.5 The evil of using stem cells from aborted babies is much graver and vast in its implications than many wish to admit. Even though each person who receives the vaccine is not actively a part of them, nevertheless it is hard to think that they are entirely guiltless, since de facto they benefit from them.

For priests, in particular, this is an extremely important consideration.

How many sins are committed in the production and marketing of these vaccines? And who benefits from these crimes? Let’s enumerate them: Past sins: Original abortions, vivisection on human beings, deprivation of both lives natural and supernatural (the baby cannot be baptised, which deprives it of eternal life and the vision of God6), torture, theft and usurpation of stolen organs, manipulation of body parts, desecration and violation of the child. Present sins: cooperation in the industrialisation of the human body, including marketing of pharmaceutical products. Future sins: which will be committed because of the growing industry: encouraging the vicious circle of creating new foetal cell lines as well as the harvesting of foetal organs to graft onto laboratory mice (‘Lung Only Mice’ and ‘Human Immune System’ Mice), and thereby encouraging new and countless abortions. This might even reach the stage (if it has not already done

CHARITY & VACCINES 25 so) of creating embryos in a lab just to be able to exploit them.

A number of pharmaceutical products, including vaccines, use aborted foetal cells in the testing stage of production only. The question is often asked whether or not that changes the morality of these products. In principle it does not, inasmuch as that testing is an essential part of its production. If a new product is marketed using and abusing foetal cell lines for testing, it is in the same category as the other products in which the foetal matter is actually used to create it, and having recourse to such products constitutes material cooperation in a very grave evil, which is permissible only in extreme cases.

As argued in both the Conscience and the Prudence articles, this extreme situation does not ordinarily exist today, and therefore we must oppose any abuse of human foetuses with, to borrow Pope John Paul II’s expression, ‘maximum determination’. This in turn explains the real nature of the push for abortion on demand: it is ultimately a form of Satan worship.

A Personal Perspective On The Prodigal Son Bob Blundell

I first read the parable, ‘The Prodigal Son’ from Luke’s gospel, years ago when I was in the early stages of my journey toward the Lord. At that point in my life, my understanding of God’s word was limited to a literal interpretation of the Scripture. I often missed the true essence of the messages Jesus told in the New Testament. I remember finishing the chapter and setting my bible down on the desk, unnerved by what I read.

The story had struck me square in the face, but not in the way most people would understand.

You see, I was part of the story. I was the oldest son.

Growing up in a small Texas town in the 60s, my younger brother and I were raised as I suspect my father had been brought up. He was a harsh disciplinarian who taught us to respect authority, work hard, and never make excuses for our failures. These rules were strictly enforced, and I did my best to avoid disappointing my parents, my teachers, then later my employers. I wasn’t an angel nor was I a genius, but I worked hard to apply these teachings as I evolved into an adult.

In my mid-30s, I dove into my career in pursuit of tangible ‘things’ valued in our world such as money and status. I desperately sought the admiration and respect of the people around me. As I focused on attaining these things, I began to see the results of my labours. With each promotion I received or possession I acquired, I felt a momentary rush of joy. But like the pleasure we receive from all earthly things, my happiness quickly faded, and I found myself looking to the next challenge on the horizon, believing status and possessions would help me find true peace.

My Prodigal Brother While I was seeking emotional fulfilment through worldly pleasures, my brother travelled a more volatile road. He stumbled through life, surviving too many self-inflicted wounds to track, squandering every opportunity and gift given to him. With each bad choice he made, a dark cloud of misfortune followed him in his journey. By society’s standards, he failed in most aspects of his life. However, my parents always stood by him, supported him financially, and defended his actions regardless of the circumstances.

I grew to despise him for his behaviour, and harboured resentment toward my parents for not holding him

to the same standards I had grown up with. Over his lifetime, they gave to him repeatedly and he always accepted those gifts without a note of gratitude. I had worked diligently to achieve success, as I knew it. My brother on the other hand never had to earn his way in life. Everything was given to him.

In Luke chapter 15, Jesus tells a story of a man who had two sons. The youngest son demanded he be given the inheritance he would be due if his father died. In a sense he told him, ‘You are already dead to me. Give me what is mine!’

The father gave him his share and the son fled the country, spending it foolishly on a life of debauchery and sin. Soon he returned penniless and ashamed.

But instead of being rebuked and rejected, his father welcomed him home with a celebration. The oldest son who had faithfully served his father all his life was

taken back by his generosity toward his brother.

‘Look at all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders.’ (Luke 15:29) And the father replied, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.

But now we must celebrate and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ (Luke 15:31) For years I was blind to the true meaning of this powerful story of redemption and relentless love. In the Scripture, I could only see the flaws of my family as characters in the plot, and the egregious behaviour of the younger son, much like my brother’s. The pain of my relationship with my sibling obscured my vision of reality.

It took years for my eyes to be opened and the truth to be revealed to me. My gradual enlightenment was purely a result of God’s work in my life. But the clarity I saw was not only in the meaning of the parable itself. I could suddenly see my own journey and transgressions more clearly.

For over 40 years, I pursued meaningless objects which could be earned, bought, or possessed.

God was not a part of my life, or scarcely even a word in my vocabulary. Twice He called upon me, and twice I denied him.

As a teenager, He summoned me to the front of a small Presbyterian church. I felt a powerful presence urging me to stand and walk toward the pulpit and accept Him in my life, but I was frightened and remained in my seat until the force subsided.

Twenty years later He beckoned me again, this time through a

co-worker. At one point I found myself kneeling in prayer in a small conference room at work, accepting Christ in my life.

For a while, I felt a sudden rebirth.

My spirit was renewed. I became involved in a church, and my view of what was important in the world began to change. But unfortunately, my conversion was temporary, and two years later the flame in my heart began to flicker and I returned to a life focused on self-indulgence.

I was driven by a need for recognition and respect from others, vs paying homage to the One who gave me life. Every thought I had and action I took was focused on me, whether it be through the attainment of financial gain, promotion, or even physical pleasure.

My pursuit of worldly things eventually took me to a very dark place in my life, resulting in my divorce and pressing guilt which threatened to overcome me.

In my blindness and vanity, I had ignored my own transgressions against God. I couldn’t see that my sins, though different than my brother’s, were no less hurtful to Him. I had rejected Him, I judged others. I coveted. The list goes on.

In short, I was the wayward son.

In a society filled with temptations, most of us are prodigal sons and daughters at various times in our lives. We turn away from Him, seeking fulfilment and joy from worldly things. We revere false idols, whether they be people,

A PRODIGAL SON 27 possessions, or pleasure. And in our flawed logic, we often hesitate to seek Him because we believe our transgressions are unpardonable, unworthy of His love and forgiveness.

But Jesus gave us this parable so we would never lose sight of the most important message He told in His short life. The message of God’s mercy and his infinite love.

Today, remnants of the resentment I feel over my brother still remain, much like a thorn embedded beneath my skin I cannot reach or extract.

Perhaps someday it will come to the surface and I will be free of it.

But for now, I view him as a person very much like me. A sinner who deserves God’s forgiveness.

Over six hundred years ago, Thomas a Kempis wrote words that are as true now as they were when he authored his book Imitation of Christ.

‘He who seeks anything but God alone and the salvation of his soul will find only trouble and grief.’

In my own journey, I wish I had understood this profound statement and followed this guidance. But of course, that would not have been God’s plan for me.

I sometimes think of the father in the story, and the great suffering he must have endured when his youngest son demanded his inheritance. That is surely the same pain God endures when we commit sin. Yet despite our failures and flaws, He is always there waiting for us to return.

“Offer up everything within your power as a sacrifice to the Lord in an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended; and of supplication for the conversion of sinners. Thus invoke peace upon your country. I am her Guardian Angel; the Angel of Portugal. Above all, accept and bear with submission the sufferings that the Lord may send you.”

Saint Brigid - Patroness Of Ireland REV. J. A. KNOWLES, O.S.A.

There is a general agreement of opinion amongst St. Brigid’s most learned and reliable biographers that it was in the village of Faughart, County Louth, she first saw the light. The date of her birth is a matter upon which there exists great diversity of opinion amongst writers of her life.

It may safely be placed in some year between 451 and 458.

Faughart is distant about three miles from Dundalk. In and around the village are to be found memorials of the Saint, which are religiously treasured by the inhabitants. The ruins of a church, said to have been built on the site of the very house in which St. Brigid was born, are shown to the visitor.

An old graveyard, in which are interred many noted men and women of bygone days, is still called St. Brigid’s Cemetery.

The interested visitor will be shown St. Brigid’s Well, the waters of which are reputed to possess curative properties, as a result of the blessing bestowed upon them by the Saint, whose name they bear. The village itself is surrounded by the fertile valleys of Louth. A splendid view of Dundalk Bay, with the Cooley mountains in the distance, is obtained from Faughart. The country around the birthplace of the Saint abounds in historic memories. Cardinal Moran, in his short Life of St. Brigid, writing of Faughart, says: “Every inch of the adjoining plains is historic ground, and from the days of Dathi and Fingall, to those of Edward Bruce and O’Neill, and still later times, some of the most stirring scenes of Irish history were witnessed there.”

of the country to this stream, in the pious hope of being freed from their maladies, through the intercession of her who was born near its waters.

Mention of Faughart is made by St. Bernard in his life of St. Malachy. He says that “three Bishops came into the village of Faughart, which they say was the birthplace of St. Brigid.”

The parents of St. Brigid were Dubtach and Brotseach. The father was descended from a noble line of ancestors. He belonged to the race of Con of the Hundred Battles, one of the most famous warrior Kings of Ireland He was a Druid of Leinster. Brotseach, like her husband, could lay claim to Royal descent. She was the daughter of Dalbronach, of the noble house of the O’Connors. It is not certain at what particular period the parents of our Saint received the grace of baptism. Some say that this sacrament was administered to them by the hands of St. Patrick, while others assert that they were baptised by one of his immediate disciples.

It is most probable that they received the grace of conversion before their saintly child was born. To account for the fact that St Brigid was born in Louth, biographers are agreed that the mother of the Saint was on a visit to relatives in Faughart, when the illustrious event took place. This seems to be the true explanation of the fact that the birth occurred outside the district in which the ancestral home was situated Leinster always has looked upon St. Brigid as a child of the Lagenian race. The old chronicles make frequent mention of Leinster as the part of Ireland most blessed and favoured by the spiritual protection and benefactions of the Patroness of our country. In a very ancient poem she is addressed as the “ Princess of the men of Leinster.”

St. Columba, who sang her praise in verse, calls her “Dear Saint of Lagenia.” Another Saint, Ultan of Ardbrechan, gives expression to his belief in her intercessory power in these words: “I shall be saved in all things by my Leinster Saint.”

It is certain that, soon after the birth of their child, Dubtach and Brotseach returned to their home on the fertile and expansive plains of Leinster. From what history tells us of the ways of Divine Providence in granting heavenly manifestations at the birth of many of our more modern saints, we may justly assume that, in the case of St. Brigid, signs and portents of her future sanctity were not wanting.

No more remarkable or momentous event could have taken place in the history of a nation than the birth of this first and most precious fruit of the labours and toils of our glorious Apostle. Her advent into this world was heralded, according to pious tradition, by many strange and wonderful happenings, which can be attributed only to supernatural agency.

The good and saintly mother must have felt that hers was no ordinary child Angels, they say, sang their hymns of praise and thanksgiving round her cradle. Perhaps it may have been the mother’s privilege, too, to hear the sweet strains of celestial harmony that filled the house in which the child was born. Her eyes may have been permitted to gaze upon the dazzling brightness of the robes of the angelic minstrels, and to behold them place the golden aureole round the head of her child as a token of her future greatness and sanctity.
