The New Irish Penal Laws Have Been Confirmed.

Lord Braid agreed the regulations went further than was lawfully allowed. The ruling was issued with “immediate effect” meaning churches could open their doors on the same day.

Lord Braid said those who brought the judicial review were entitled to have the regulations declared unlawful. He said the Scottish government regulations disproportionately interfered with the freedom of religion secured in the European Convention on Human Rights.

As we go to press there has been a development in Declan Ganley’s case against the unjust State imposed ban on public worship. The State had been asked by the High Court to clarify whether there is a legal basis for Covid-19 restrictions on people attending Mass or whether they are merely advisory. The State have confirmed that the restrictions are not merely advisory but carry legal weight — in the eyes of the State it is therefore illegal to attend Mass. This authoritarian and unjust response comes in spite of the fact that similar legal challenges in several countries have found in favour of the freedom to worship.

The most recent case being in Scotland at the end of March.

He added: “It is impossible to measure the effect of those restrictions on those who hold religious beliefs. It goes beyond mere loss of companionship and an inability to attend a lunch club.”

Places of worship in Scotland were allowed to reopen immediately after Covid regulations forcing their closure were deemed unlawful. A group of 27 church leaders launched a judicial review at the Court of Session arguing the Scottish government acted beyond their emergency powers.

Rev Dr William Philip, senior minister at the Tron Church in Glasgow, welcomed the ruling.

He said: “From the outset we have recognised the serious decisions the Scottish Ministers had to take in response to the pandemic.

“However, its approach to banning and criminalising gathered church worship was clearly an over-reach and disproportionate and if this had gone unchallenged it would have set a very dangerous precedent.

Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Christian Legal Centre, said she was “thankful and relieved” that the court had recognised what she described as a “dangerous interference”.

She added: “The fundamental principle of freedom has prevailed with a strong dash of good old common sense.”

Canon White, parish priest of St Alphonsus Church in Glasgow, said: “I’m overjoyed to hear that the court has understood the essential need to protect not only the physical and material health of our society but also its spiritual

needs and therefore overturned the disproportionate, unnecessary and unlawful blanket ban on public worship.”

On hearing that the restrictions would be lifted immediately, Canon White confirmed he would be organising Mass at St Mary’s immediately.

It is hoped that the Irish courts will reach the same judgement as other places and declare the ban on public worship to be unlawful. Declan Ganley is challenging certain temporary regulations introduced by the Minster for Health to deal with the pandemic — Regulation 5(1) and (3) of the 1947 Health Act. He claims the regulations are incompatible with various articles of the Constitution, including Article 44 where the State acknowledges the right to the free practice of religion. Alternatively, he wants a declaration the regulations do not prevent him leaving his residence for the purpose of practising his religion.

Meanwhile a recent study in the US suggested that, with the right guidelines in place, churches can reopen with little or no risk of transmission. But in Ireland the attacks on Christianity continue and are getting worse.

Garda checkpoints were erected close to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mullahoran, Co Cavan, on Sunday 7th March as parish priest Fr PJ Hughes said Mass in defiance of the Covid-19 regulations. Fr Hughes likened the Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions to the penal laws and Oliver Cromwell.

Father Hughes told the Irish Times he was “just absolutely sick at the whole idea of closing the church.

The people who are making the decision about closing the church are not people of faith. They can’t be because if they were they would know the damage they are doing to themselves, their own souls and to the whole country.”

He said he is “disappointed with the archbishops, that they don’t stand up and see what’s going on, what’s happening.” He believed “the Archbishop of Armagh should be doing more, He’s responsible for the souls of the baptised in this country because he is the Archbishop of Armagh.”

The Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Francis Duffy, had told him “to close the doors. It does not represent the official church, what I am doing. They are towing the line of a Government who don’t believe in God.” In Limerick Gardai have been taking the names and addresses of Catholics who were praying outside the Sacred Heart Church.

It is becoming clearer by the day that the biggest casualty of Covid is our personal freedom and I encourage you to read the excellent article on page 24 by Dr. Joseph Mercola which discusses the impact of this. The article highlights the following: • While the casualties of government-imposed COVID-19 countermeasures are manifold, the biggest and most tragic of them all is the loss of individual freedoms.

• • We either choose freedom, or we choose to live under authoritarian rule. Even if restrictions are lifted, public attitude can place freedom on shaky ground, as public acceptance of overreach will allow for the same to occur again and again at a moment’s notice.

• • The freedom to interact with other human beings is a crucial, most basic human need.

• • The inevitabilities of life — which include uncertainty, moment-to-moment risk and the surety of death — demand that we not require people to cease living in order to “save” others from the ramifications of ill health.

• • The answer, if we really want to protect the masses, is to educate and promote healthy living at all stages of life. Improving your health through a healthy lifestyle, sunshine, fresh air and real food, is the best way to protect the most people.

I will close with a short update on my wife’s progress.

Unfortunately there has been a setback and Kim is now back in hospital, it appears there is more damage to her back than originally thought and so she requires more scans and a new program of physiotherapy. It means her journey to recovery will be slower than we originally had hoped for and could take a number of years so please keep her in your prayers.

Commentary On Easter Sunday Evening Dom Prosper Gueranger

The day of Jesus’ Resurrection is fast drawing to its close. It is the day honoured by God with the greatest of all miracles; it is the most important day that has ever dawned upon the world since light was first created; but the night will soon be upon us, shadowing the brightness of the great day.

Four times has our Redeemer appeared. He would now manifest himself to all his Apostles, and thus enable them to know by their own experience what they have, a few hours since, learned from Peter’s testimony. But, leaving for a few moments longer these men whom he honours with the name of brethren, and who now believe in his Resurrection, he would first console two hearts that are grieving on his account, though their grief comes from their want of faith.

Two men are traversing the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus, slowly and sadly. They are evidently suffering from some cruel disappointment; nay, they give one the idea that a motive of fear impels them to leave the city. They were disciples of Jesus; but the ignominious and violent death of this Master, in whom they had such confidence, has filled their hearts with bitter despondency.

They are ashamed of having joined themselves with one who is not what they took him to be. They hid themselves after his execution; but the report having been spread of his sepulchre having been broken into, and the Body taken away, they resolve to seek a safer refuge. Jesus’ enemies have great power, and are doubtless busy taking proceedings against those who have dared to break the seal of the sepulchre.

Perhaps all that have had any connection with this Jesus will be arraigned before the public tribunal.

While they are thus conferring with each other on the sad events of the last few days, a stranger overtakes

them and walks with them. It is Jesus; but so absorbed are they in their own sorrow, that they do not recognize him.

The same happens to us, when· we give way to feelings of human grief: we lose sight of that God who comes to cheer us by his presence along the path of our exile. Jesus asks these two men the cause of their sadness. They tell him with all simplicity, and this King of glory, who has, this very day, triumphed over death, deigns to enter into a long conversation with them, and explain to them, as they walk along, the scriptural prophecies concerning the humiliations, the death, and the glory of the Messias.

They would throw themselves at his feet but he has disappeared, leaving them mute with surprise, and yet transported with exceeding joy. It is the fifth apparition.

The two wayfarers are delighted with his words. As they afterwards say to each other, their hearts burn within them as the stranger goes on telling them these grand truths.

Jesus feigns to bid them farewell, but they will not hear of it: ‘Stay with us,’ they say to him, ‘for the evening cometh on, and the day is far spent.’ (Luke 24:29) They take him into their house at Emmaus, constrain him to sit down to table with them, and yet, strange to say, they have not an idea who this heavenly instructor is, who has solved all their doubts with such persuasive wisdom and eloquence!

The two disciples cannot wait; though so late in the evening, they must hurry back to Jerusalem, and tell the Apostles that their Master is living, that they have seen him, and talked with him. They therefore leave Emmaus, where they thought to pass the night, and are soon back in the city from which they had tremblingly fled. They are soon with the Apostles; but they find them already aware of the glad tidings, and fervent in their faith of the Resurrection.

Before they have time to open their lips, the Apostles exclaim: ‘The Lord hath truly risen, and hath appeared unto Simon!’ (Luke 24:34) The two disciples then relate what has just happened to themselves.

Such is the conversation of the Apostles — men now unknown, but whose names are, in a short time hence, to be published and loved throughout the whole universe.

Do not we resemble these two disciples, when we allow ourselves to be influenced by human thoughts and feelings? Jesus is near us, he speaks to us, he instructs us, he consoles us; and yet, often times, it is long before we recognize him!

The doors of the house where the little flock is assembled are kept carefully closed, for they are afraid of being discovered. The soldiers, who had kept watch at the sepulchre, went early this morning to the chief priests, and told them what had happened.

At length, Jesus makes himself known to our two incredulous disciples. They have placed him at the head of the table; it is for him to break the bread. He takes it into his divine hands, as he did at the Last Supper; and no sooner has he

Ten of them are now together in the house; for Thomas, who was present when the two disciples came in from Emmaus, has taken the opportunity, afforded by the darkness of the hour, to go forth into the city.

The Apostles, then, are speaking to one another of the great events of this day, when lo! Jesus stands before them, and yet the door has not been opened.

That well-known voice and figure and face! — yes. it is Jesus! He speaks to them with an accent of tenderest love, and says: ‘Peace be to you !’ What can they say?

This sudden and mysterious visit robs them of self-possession. They have no idea yet of the qualities of a glorified body; and, though firmly believing in the mystery of their Lord’s Resurrection, they are not quite sure that what they now behold is not a phantom.

This year’s Easter is as full of reality and life and joy, yea, and of thyself, as was that whereon thou didst rise from the grave. All times and seasons belong to thee: and as the material world has ever been supported by thy power, so the spiritual world lives by thy mysteries.

Praise, then, and honour, and benediction be to thee, 0 Jesus! for thy Resurrection, which makes this day the grandest and gladdest of the year!

Scripture, Tradition, Magisterium, and Priesthood Fr. Kevin E. O’Reilly, OP

One line of argument offered by those who promote the ordination of women as deacons and priests is that the Church’s teaching and praxis with regard to this issue is the fruit of tradition and that it has no basis in Sacred Scripture.

This argument at once demands a clarification of the relationship that obtains between Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium. Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, ‘Dei Verbum’, describes this relationship in an unsurpassed way.

Both Scripture and Tradition flow from “the same divine wellspring”; in a certain manner they unite so as to form a single reality; and, they tend towards “the same end.” Sacred Scripture is the Word of God as written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; Sacred Tradition “takes the Word of God entrusted by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and hands it on to their successors in its full purity.”

Scripture and Tradition, which “are to be accepted and venerated with the same sense of loyalty and reverence”

constitute “a single deposit of the Word of God, which is entrusted to the Church.” In whatever issue he might consider, therefore, a Catholic theologian will not intimate any tension between Scripture and Tradition.

Magisterium, the living teaching office of the Church, has for its part the task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God as found in Scripture and in Tradition. Vatican II is at pains to point out that this office “is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ” and that it “is not above the Word of God.” The teaching office of the Church is rather the servant of the Word of God, teaching only what it has been passed down to it. The Latin phrase, ‘quod traditum est’, might well be translated as “what has been ‘traditioned’.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has shown how the Church’s doctrinal, sacramental, and liturgical traditions, as well as the theology of the early major theological figures, form part of the intricate and interwoven relationship between the Church and the Bible. An adequate understanding of the Word of God in Scripture is not possible outside this unified context.

Scripture, the doctrinal tradition, and the sacramental practice of the Church down through the centuries provide the normative sources for Catholic theology in discerning the intention of the Lord Jesus with regard to the priesthood. These sources are not discrete elements that might possibility contradict each other but constitute a single theological lens.

The sacrament of Holy Orders for its part is intrinsic to the very structure of Tradition. The bishop, who possesses this sacrament in its fullness, is thereby inserted into the current of apostolic succession. The sacrament of Holy orders is in fact an expression of what has been handed on from the Apostles. It is also the guarantee that the faith is preserved in its integrity from one generation to the next.

Vatican II’s Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, ‘Presbyterorum Ordinis’, teaches that, Holy orders conforms its recipients “to Christ the Priest in such a way that they can act in the person of Christ the Head.”

Acting in the person of Christ the Head, however rules out arbitrariness. Bishops and priests, their co-workers, transmit Christ’s authority sacramentally. Holy Orders does not make them sources of authority in their own right.

Hierarchy is not the rule of clerics over the Church but rather is “sacred authority” (from the Greek, hierá

archē). Properly understood, this authority is exercised

by Christ. The Apostles and their successors simply represent this authority.

John Paul II’s clarification in ‘Ordinatio Sacerdotalis’, is to be understood within this interpretative matrix of Scripture, Tradition, and the episcopal office as sacramentally mediating the authority of Christ. There he writes that “the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful”. (Ordinatio Sacerdotalis 4) John Paul II states that we are here dealing with “a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church’s divine constitution itself.” In his apostolic letter he does not unpack just how priesthood pertains to the Church’s divine constitution. This brief article cannot unfortunately enter into a treatment of this issue either.

Certainly, women have done more than men in many places to preserve and to hand on the faith. Their gifts are still unfortunately all too often grossly disregarded.

Women gifted with a sacramental appreciation of the faith, however, wholly subscribe to the Church’s teaching concerning Holy Orders. They recognise that sacramentality, not functionality, is the decisive criterion.

St. Patrick And The Souls You Hardly Save

An Irish Blessing With Saint Patrick’s Day having passed, I was able to reflect on the evolution of my observance of the day. This year in Italy, celebrations were marked by a concern for the Nigerian community at the parish (incidentally, Saint Patrick is also the patron of Nigeria) and some Irish food. The celebration also marked the first Saint Patrick’s Day without one of my brother priests, who passed away in the summer.

He was born and raised in Ireland and after a conversion later in life, Fr. Eddie entered seminary in his late fifties. His Irish wit and compassion towards the sick made him wellloved and appreciated among his much younger peers. As the years of study wore on, although his wit and compassion remained, his health began to decline. Ordained a priest in 2016 at the age of 66, his four years of ministry would be marked by illness, and seldom did he celebrate Mass in public.

What’s The Point?

The question that naturally arises is: what’s the point? Was all that work, all the study, all the sacrifice, really worth it? I have met those who tell me, without hesitation, that the answer is no. Why give so much, take so much time and effort for an elderly man to become a priest?

I can appreciate their concerns: financially, perhaps it makes little sense, and it is certainly timeconsuming to explain, over and over again, the finer points of philosophy and theology. Yet, such arguments miss the most important reason in favour of all the efforts and sacrifices; indeed, they miss the only real reason for doing anything at all, and that is because it is God’s will.

When Eddie understood that God’s will was for him to become Father Eddie; when he saw that, in spite of his wanderings, God wanted him for His own, to have him serve as His Priest, the Divine will became the guiding rule and measure of his life and a gift for those who came into contact with him. If it took Fr. Eddie 66 years and traveling across the world to become what God had planned from all eternity for him to be, the sacrifices and efforts were all worthwhile.

I mention this because Fr. Eddie’s case shows us a general principle, one that should govern our lives.

While we may not know what God intends in particular for each soul (for instance, whether God is calling a particular soul to religious life or marriage), we know that in general He desires all men and women to be saved and come to know the truth (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

God’s universal will is that all may make it to heaven. This general desire should be ours as well, and it needs to be shown in our prayers and sacrifices, in our attitudes towards others, in short, in the way we live our daily lives.

What About The Wandering Sheep?

This thought is perhaps easy to keep in mind for those dear to us who haven’t wandered far from the path, the ninety-nine sheep in our lives who stay more or less close

to Christ. But what about that one sheep who wanders? Perhaps we have one in the family, or a coworker or friend: what about that soul who seems so far off that there is no hope? Do our sacrifices and prayers really make a difference?

My favourite poem by G. K. Chesterton is The Ballad of the White Horse. In this I’m not alone, because, as scholars note, the work is one of the last great epic poems in English, and it was the only work that Chesterton thought was good enough to dedicate to his wife.

The poem recounts a fictionalised account of King Alfred’s battle with the Danes in 878 AD, but the work has more to it than that because Alfred is Christian and the Danes are pagans.

In the beginning of the poem, as Alfred becomes aware of the size and strength of the Danish army and plans for the eventual battle, he calls out to the Blessed Virgin, asking only to know whether, when everything is said and done, he and his men will make it back home alive. Mary’s answer is enigmatic.

After telling him that the wise and evil know many things, she ends with the following three stanzas: But you and all the kind of Christ Are ignorant and brave, And you have wars you hardly win And souls you hardly save.

I tell you naught for your comfort, Yea, naught for your desire, Save that the sky grows darker yet And the sea rises higher.

Night shall be thrice night over you, And heaven an iron cope.

Do you have joy without a cause, Yea, faith without a hope?”

Given that cryptic answer, Alfred goes to gather his troops, telling them he’s calling them to go die in

What the king doesn’t understand is the last line: “Do you have joy without a cause?” which is a reference to Mary, the Cause of our Joy, who will intercede during the pivotal moment in the battle and bring them victory.

The Souls You Hardly Save Consider just that one line: “You have wars you hardly win and souls you hardly save.” In our lives, we encounter a great number of souls who are in bad spiritual shape, souls who seem to be beyond help. Even Saint Teresa of Calcutta, that great saint of charity who loved everyone so dearly, even she spoke of souls who have “an entire miserable existence, an existence perhaps believed to be useless.” We could say that these are, at best, the souls that are hardly saved.

An Example From The Life Of Saint John Vianney In his biography of Saint John Vianney, the Abbé Trochu recounts the following story of the saint.

A certain Abbé Guillaumet met a lady on a train who was in deep mourning and when he said that he was going to Ars she asked, “Monsieur l’Abbe, will you allow

me to accompany you to Ars? I may as well go there, as elsewhere. . . . I am travelling to distract my thoughts.” When they reached the village, the priest led the lady to a place near the church and suddenly, Saint John Vianney appeared. He stopped in front of the lady in black who, following the example of the crowd, had gone down on her knees.

He bent over her and whispered into her ear: “He is saved!”

But, as the king failed to see, a war hardly won is still a war won, and a soul hardly saved, is still a soul saved. It might not be very pretty, but, in the end, as they say in sports, a win is a win.

The woman was startled and Monsignor Vianney repeated: “He is saved!” A gesture of disbelief was the only reply of the stranger. Whereupon the saint, stressing each word, repeated, “I tell you he is saved.

He is in Purgatory, and you must pray for him. Between the parapet of the bridge and the water he had time to make an act of contrition. Our Blessed Lady obtained that grace for him. Remember the shrine that you put up in your room during the month of May? Though your husband professed to have no religion, he sometimes joined in your prayers; this merited for him the grace of repentance and pardon at the last moment.”

The next day, the lady explained to Abbé Guillaumet that she had been in black despair because of the tragic death of her husband: “He was an unbeliever, and my one object in life was to bring him back to God. I did not get the time. He committed suicide by drowning himself. I could only think of him as lost. Oh! Were we never again to meet? Now you hear that the Cure d’Ars told me more than once: ‘He is saved!’ So I shall meet him again in heaven. Monsieur L’Abbé, I am cured!”

No one would hold up the husband of the story as a model of faith. Yet, in the end, he was saved through God’s mercy, but also through the prayers and efforts of his wife. A soul that is hardly saved, is saved nonetheless. Indeed, it in this context that Saint Mother Teresa speaks of such souls. “I am convinced,” she said, “that even one moment is enough to ransom an entire miserable existence, an existence perhaps believed to be useless.” The woman had prayed, sacrificed, and begged God for her husband’s soul.

Dramatic Or Not, This Is The Work To Be Done Sometimes these sacrifices for the conversion of souls are seen in a dramatic way. For instance, after the death of Venerable Elisabeth Leseur, her atheist husband came across her will. In it, she explained how she made a deal with God, asking Him to send her all the sufferings and sacrifices necessary to purchase his soul.

“On the day that I die,” she wrote, “I shall have paid the price. You will have been bought and paid for. Greater love than this no woman hath that she should lay down her life for her husband.”

Although he initially scoffed at the thought, the husband would later experience a profound conversion, become a religious, and eventually a priest. Yet, not all, and

perhaps not even most sacrifices are so dramatic. Saint Therese of Lisieux remarked that “To ecstasy, I prefer the monotony of sacrifice.” The little sacrifices, the small offerings, hidden in the depths of daily life but offered to God nonetheless, make all the difference.

Honouring Saint Patrick Why mention this now? Shortly before I left the States for Italy, Fr. Eddie remarked, knowing that his health was declining: “Nate, I want you to preach my funeral Mass.” As Providence would have it, between COVID and lockdowns, I wasn’t able to make it, but this, more or less, would have been the point of the homily. An Irish life lived for and in Jesus Christ, a life which brought so many others to Christ: there is no better way to honour Saint Patrick.

If, as the saying goes, we are all Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day, then this lesson is for all of us. With our sacrifices and prayers, and mostly importantly through our examples and vocations, we can help Christ reach even the “souls that are hardly saved.”

Blessing Sin?

I must confess, that I am a prophecy person, by that I believe that prophecy to be God inspired. That been the case then we are duty bound to take notice.

Fr Tim Hazlewood, a priest in Cork (on RTE’s Morning Ireland 19.03.21) has said he would bless the union of same-sex couples. “If Christ was with us now, He would do the caring, the loving thing,” Fr Hazelwood said.

When I read in my bible the many warning prophecies made and how people ignored those warn-ing and paid the price, it makes me sit up and realise that we God fearing people had better get our act together

Whatever about Fr Hazelwood’s opinion, Our Lord would of course do the right thing. There can be no doubt about that. Nevertheless, however, sodomy is an abominable sin and Fr Hazlewood is wrong to promote and encourage it.

He must know that the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar were destroyed by God because of such acts. Like the woman caught in adultery Jesus forgave her, yes, but crucially added: “Now go and sin no more”. Just be-cause we like or love something doesn’t necessarily make it a good thing in the Eyes of God. Fr Hazlewood might do better to follow closer Our Lord’s teaching by guiding us sinners to: “ ... sin no more”.

Our country is in a state of denial. I cringe when I hear foreign countries cite Ireland as been one of the most progressive and liberal IN THE WORLD. What a damning indictment, Ooops I’m at it again(anger etc).Sorry.

So I’ll finish by simply recommending a few prophecies: Mathew 24:7, Luke 21:11, don’t worry there are many more.

A State Of Denial Dear Editor, For some time now I have been threatening to write to your newspaper, but anytime I attempt to do so a tremendous feeling of anger and disgust builds up in me.

So why you might ask, well with all the nonsense that is been pumped out at us by our so called “media moguls” even I (not the brightest star in the galaxy) knows only too well that it is all de-signed to suit the liberal agenda.

There is an obvious bias against the Catholic Religion at this present time, not only Catholics but all God-fearing people also.

Do you remember those Bible Thumpers of yesteryear?

Those guys who could be heard for miles around shouting at the top of their voices on street corners about the end times etc. Well, you know what, it was not all nonsense.

To the unenlightened (and I was one of them) may I respectfully suggest that you take up reading the Holy Bible. Please do not be intimidated by attempting this task.

Remember you are not ex-pected to know the book “off by heart” but there are some nuggets that you will find very inspiring and consoling.

Quo Vadis Irish Bishops?

The need for Irish Catholics to pray for our bishops grows more urgent by the day. One could be forgiven for thinking that our Irish bishops have lost their way. Irish Catholics will once again be officially denied access to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on Easter Sunday and the Irish bishops, by their actions, fully support the unjust penal restrictions that have been forced on lay Catholics. The bishops and the priests will get to attend the Holy Sacrifice of Holy Mass at Easter, most of the lay faithful will not.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

As I write this article the Irish Government have just confirmed to Declan Ganley that they believe that it is now illegal in Ireland for a priest to celebrate Holy Mass with members of the laity in attendance and that it is illegal for the laity to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They have confirmed that penal sanctions have been attached to such celebrations or attendance. It will be interesting to see what the High Court judge decides in this case and whether it will be referred to our Supreme Court.

In Scotland, a recent ruling by Judge Lord Braid has declared the criminalisation of celebrating Holy Mass and attendance at same as being unconstitutional. He said that article nine of the European Convention on Human Rights had been breached. This article reads:

alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.

2. Freedom to manifest one’s religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.”

It is notable that article nine allows governments to restrict freedom of religion on health grounds. However, if one can go to the supermarket to purchase an Easter egg or a television set, then one can hardly argue that there is a health imperative which would allow the restriction of public worship in conditions which are safer than the supermarkets.

The Irish bishops have not made any legal challenges to the legislation as it would appear that they have more important things on their minds such as launching a synodal process in Ireland and making negative comments about the recent Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s document reaffirming Catholic Church teaching that one cannot bless openly sinful relationships.

Bishop Paul Dempsey, of the Achonry Diocese, recently issued a ‘reflection’ which was published on the Irish Catholic Bishops’ website. In his reflection Bishop Dempsey quoted Bishop Bonny of Antwerp. Bishop Bonny is in favour of blessings for same-sex relationships.

“ARTICLE 9 Freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

I called Bishop Dempsey and he kindly took my call. I asked him if he supported Bishop Bonny’s call for blessings of same-sex relationships.

1. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either

Bishop Dempsey said that I seemed to have a particular focus on that issue and that he also quoted Pope Francis in his reflection.

I explained that the reason I was focusing on this particular issue was because of Bishop Bonny’s public stance on the blessing of homosexual relationships and because Bishop Dempsey, in his reflection, had not clarified whether or not he supported Bishop Bonny’s position.

Bishop Dempsey said that the reason he quoted Bishop Bonny was to highlight what was discussed at the Synod on the Family. Here is the quote from Bishop Bonny that Bishop Dempsey used in his reflection. “there were frequent discussions about appropriate rituals and gestures to include homosexual couples, including in the liturgical sphere. Naturally, this occurred with respect for the theologically and pastoral distinction between a sacramental marriage and the blessing of a relatioinship. The majority of the synod fathers did not choose a black and white liturgical approach or an all-or-nothing model.”

Bishop Dempsey goes on to tell us how we must understand the bigger picture saying that the Church’s understanding of marriage is fundamental. He says that, “The deeper problem arises in the sphere of language, at best it is experienced as cold and distant, at worst hurtful and offensive. The statement that the Church “cannot bless sin” is seen as targeting or treating same sex couples in a way that others are not targeted or treated in the Church. Many have found this deeply offensive. As a result some feel they are not welcome and have no place in the Catholic Church. There is a great sadness in this as no one should feel that they are not welcome in the Church, which is the Body of Christ. Further to this so many people in same sex relationships have enriched the life of the Church and continue to do so in parishes across the world.”

In my conversation with Bishop Dempsey, he said that I was trying to

twist what he was saying, and that I was angry and aggressive. I admit that I was angry as I am very passionate about these matters. This is because I am a father of children who is very much aware of the push to have homosexual relationships given some form of false recognition within the Catholic Church.

Most of our Catholic schools in Ireland promote the false LGBT ideology and to date, no Irish bishop has publicly spoken out against this false indoctrination of Catholic children.

This makes me angry and I publicly apologise to Bishop Dempsey for any upset caused I may have caused him.

However, Bishop Dempsey did not answer the question I asked him which was, “does he support Bishop Bonny’s call for blessings for people in same sex relationships”. This is a yes or no question and Bishop Dempsey accused me of trying to put words into his mouth by asking this question, which is simply not true.

Catholic parents need to know if their bishop supports giving blessings to same sex couples. It is not clear from Bishop Dempsey’s article, which you can read in full on the Irish Bishops website, what exactly he is in favour of with regards to same sex couples.

Bishop Dempsey’s reflection is misleading, I assume unintentionally.

When Bishop Dempsey says that “The statement that the Church “cannot bless sin...”, he has misquoted the CDF document which nowhere states that the church cannot bless sin. What the CDF document says is that Jesus does not and cannot bless sin: “At the same time, the Church recalls that God Himself never ceases to bless each of His pilgrim children in this world, because for Him “we are more important to God than all of the sins that My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee. I beg pardon of Thee for all those that do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen.

He in fact “takes us as we are, but never leaves us as we are” When Bishop Dempsey erroneously says that “The statement that the Church “cannot bless sin” is seen as targeting or treating same sex couples in a way that others are not targeted or treated in the Church.” he is again being misleading and is following the agenda of those who seek to incorporate the

homosexual lifestyle into the Catholic Church.

The CDF was not targeting same sex couples, even though it was responding to a specific question which asked, “Does the Church have the power to give the blessing to unions of persons of the same sex?”

The CDF document does not narrow its treatment of relationships only to same sex relationships. In regard to the blessing of relationships the document states the following.

14 QUO VADIS IRISH BISHOPS? “Consequently, in order to conform with the nature of sacramentals, when a blessing is invoked on particular human relationships, in addition to the right intention of those who participate, it is necessary that what is blessed be objectively and positively ordered to receive and express grace, according to the designs of God inscribed in creation, and fully revealed by Christ the Lord. Therefore, only those realities which are in themselves ordered to serve those ends are congruent with the essence of the blessing imparted by the Church.

For this reason, it is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships, or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage (i.e., outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex. The presence in such relationships of positive elements, which are in themselves to be valued and appreciated, cannot justify these relationships and render them legitimate objects of an ecclesial blessing, since the positive elements exist within the context of a union not ordered to the Creator’s plan.”

In this discussion of the blessing of relationships, the CDF speaks of the illicitness of blessing any sexual relationship where those involved are not sacramentally married. It is not just speaking about same sex relationships.

In my phone call with Bishop Dempsey he said that I seemed to be focussed on one particular quote from him, the one from Bishop Bonny. I would say that it is Bishop Dempsey who chose to focus on one particular aspect of the CDF document whilst ignoring the fact that the CDF included non-marital heterosexual relationships in the ban on blessings.

In its response, the CDF broadened the discussion out beyond the limits of same sex relationships, but Bishop Dempsey chose to narrow the focus to same-sex relationships, and this was the very reason for my phone call to him in order to seek clarification of his position.

I ask you to pray for Bishop Dempsey as it is my belief that his reflection, with its misquotes and singular focus on same sex relationships, will only serve the cause of those who seek to normalise homosexual relationships within the Catholic Church.

That I am correct in this assumption is borne out by the fact that organisations which support same sex marriage, such as The Irish Times, as well as other newspaper outlets, have given favourable coverage to bishop Dempsey’s reflection.

The Irish Times article was headed “Vatican language on gay blessings ‘hurtful’, says Ireland’s youngest Catholic bishop” Bishop Dempsey is not alone in using quotes from bishops who do not accept Catholic Church teaching on same sex relationships. This March, in Knock, Fr Richard Gibbons had an online presentation during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which featured Cardinal Schonborn who gave an address on St Joseph.

be refused.” (Cardinal Schonborn - Der Sonntag interview) While Bishop Dempsey is focussed on same sex relationships, Father PJ Hughes continues to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to allow Catholics to attend, despite the penal laws against this, and to feed the flock entrusted to his care.

Bishop Dempsey also mentions another very worrying development within the Catholic Church in Ireland and that is the proposed National Synodal Assembly. I fear that the Irish bishops will follow the German bishops and will lead Irish Catholics into schism.

The Church as instituted by Jesus Christ, it is a hierarchical institution with Christ as its Head. Dogmatic Catholic teaching is not a matter for negotiated discussions as dogmatic matters are already settled.

I am suspicious of Catholic bishops who claim to uphold Catholic teaching on marriage and family life on the one hand, whilst intimating that we must somehow include those who live in sinful relationships in the life of the Church without calling them to leave the sinful relationships they are in or to bring these relationships, where possible, into line with Catholic Church teaching.

Cardinal Schonborn recently objected to the CDF document and seems to indicate that he will not follow the directive in certain situations.

Catholics are called to follow Catholic Church teachings because they are the teachings of Jesus Christ. Catholics are called to strive to “sin no more”, just as Christ called the woman in adultery to “sin no more”, whilst not condemning her.

Christ did not concentrate by reflecting “on how His language was heard and interpreted by the people of His time” as Bishop Dempsey urges the Catholic church of our time to do. Christ simply preached the Truth saying “Whoever has ears, let them hear” (Matthew 11:15) Christ’s direct, uncompromising way of speaking led to Him being crucified.

Perhaps this is a good place for the Irish bishops to start. Let them concentrate on preaching the Truths of the Catholic Faith simply and with clarity and stop thinking about who is going to be offended. Let them stop their selective quotes from bishops and Cardinals who favour same sex marriage. Let them stop their selective quotes from CDF documents which distort the reality of those documents and let them stop accusing those who challenge them to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church as being the ones who are selective.

The language used in the CDF document, which Bishop Paul Dempsey has misquoted, is not discriminatory in any way. The document even addresses this question of discrimination. I wonder why Bishop Paul Dempsey did not refer to the following section of the document?

“The declaration of the unlawfulness of blessings of unions between persons of the same sex is not therefore, and is not intended to be, a form of unjust discrimination, but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite and of the very nature of the sacramentals, as the Church understands them.” (CDF Responsum 22/02/21) Bishop Paul Dempsey needs to let us know whether or not he favours giving blessings to those in same sex relationships. Perhaps Bishop Paul Dempsey could actively promote John Cassidy’s book, ‘There’s A Place For Us’, which was written by a man with same sex attraction and which addresses the very question of the role of same sex attracted people within the

The Five First Saturdays

This book is a collection of Rosary meditations composed by the celebrated French Dominican, Father Jacques Marie Louis Monsabré, which were translated into English in 1885. I recommend that our readers first read the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s - “Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to a dubium regarding the blessing of the unions of persons of the same sex,” which was published on the 15th March 2021 and is available on the Vatican’s website.

I then recommend that our readers read Bishop Paul Dempsey’s “Reflection by Bishop Paul Dempsey to mark Pope Francis’ ‘Amoris Laetitia Family Year’ which is available on the Irish Bishops Conference website.

I have been in contact with the Catholic Communications Office in Maynooth to ask them to correct the misquote in Bishop Dempsey’s reflection.

After reading both of these documents I will leave it to our readers to decide who is ‘targeting’ the same sex issue, Bishop Dempsey, or the CDF?

Matt Talbot An Icon And Inspiration For These Addictive Times In recent months not a day passes without addiction to drugs, drink, or gambling being the source of some tragic headline or news event.

The deceased Celtic Tiger is busy dumping its evil poisoned fruits.

Perhaps now is the time for all prayerful Catholics to support the recent initiative of the Archbishop of Dublin to re-invigorate the cause of a holy Dublin labourer, Matt Talbot, for the highest honour the Church can bestow — that of sainthood. Of course I must add that the desire is the easy bit and the work necessary to be undertaken to claim the honour is very difficult.

Matt Talbot undertook this work with great zeal so let us give him the reward he so richly deserves by praying to him for ‘Miracles on Tap’, by ensuring that his official canonisation prayer cards reach every church and every addiction agency or centre in the four corners of the world. I myself intend to do my little bit of work by becoming more active in my branch of the Knights of Saint Columbanus, which bears the name ‘Venerable Matt Talbot Council’.

Led by our Grand Knight, Brother Gerry Nangle and our representative on the Dublin Diocesan Committee Brother Michael Wall. Our major project is now to assist and promote in whatever way we can the cause of Matt Talbot’s canonisation.

I will not dwell too much on the details of Matt’s heroic life, as the majority of our readers will already know them. Matt died of a heart attack in Granby Lane on Trinity Sunday, 7 June 1925, whilst making his way to Mass in St.Saviour’s Church on Dominick Street. He was buried the following Thursday on the feast of Corpus Christi, in Glasnevin Cemetery.

His hidden life of exemplary holiness became apparent to those who found him and cared for him and arranged his funeral and burial. Many years later, in 1952, Matt’s remains were exhumed and placed in a double coffin and re-interred in a vault in the centre of Glasnevin Cemetery.

and his grave became a place of pilgrimage for people from all over Ireland and indeed the world.

In 1972 Matt Talbot’s remains were removed to their present resting place in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Seán McDermott Street, where pilgrims can pray and see his coffin through a glass panel. Other places of interest for those who wish to seek his intercession are of course Granby Lane, marked by a plaque, opposite where he died, on the walls of the Salvation Army hostel, demonstrating that addiction distinguishes between neither class nor religion, and by a cross on the railings near the exact spot.

The official Church began in 1931 to take an interest in Matt’s life of heroic sanctity when Archbishop Edward Byrne started a sworn enquiry, and this led to a similar Vatican enquiry in 1947, which led the humble Dublin labourer to be publicly venerated at his shrine in the heart of the poorest part of the city and honoured with the title of ‘Venerable’. Matt needs two miracles to rise from ‘Venerable’ to ‘Sainthood’ and to achieve this a massive official prayer card campaign as outlined above is essential.

The UN Is Coming For Your Children Christopher Monckton of Brenchley At the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, now in session, the Communists who now control most such supranational entities have infiltrated a far-out Left, feminist manifesto into the draft recommendations, which are always carefully prepared in advance and very nearly always nodded through unopposed by For instance, “Guarantee access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)”. The use of the calculatedly obscurantist acronym will eventually replace the weasel words “sexual and reproductive health and rights”, for too many non-Communists now know that these are code-words for abortion on demand – which, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with the health of the woman and everything to do with permanently destroying the health of her child by tearing it limb from limb and killing it in its mother’s womb.

And here is another gem: “Avoid online violence against women, and be able to hold media and companies who run social media content accountable for removing such content.” What this means is that anyone who argues against baby-butchering will be “cancelled” – i.e., prevented from expressing an opinion.

The unspeakable BBC already has an undeclared but rigorouslyenforced policy of describing anyone who opposes the torturing and butchering of babies as an “extremist”. Long gone are the days when we were occasionally allowed to speak up for little children’s rights on the air.

for “direct funding to women’s organisations and feminist movements”. This is by now a wellworn device used exclusively by the Communist Left. The watermelons (green on the outside, Red on the inside) have been doing it for years.

One fine instance is the Aarhus Convention, which provides cover for hard-Left governments to pour taxpayers’ money into the already well-padded bank accounts of Communist front groups such as Greenpeace.

The national delegates who go to these conferences will almost never speak out against the Communists, for they fear the organised reputational damage they will have to endure if they do. As for the news media, they attend these international UN gabfests in large numbers, but even the few who are not on the far Left themselves go there to wine and dine and not to report what is going on in the negotiating chamber.

In my experience, it only takes one determined reporter to bring

the whole house of cards crashing down about the ears of the bitter, anti-Western plotters who are ruthlessly inflicting maximal damage on the democratic nations via the international institutions.

Let me give you an example of what can be done. In 2011, I went to the annual Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change. Global warming is, of course, an elaborate fiction devised and maintained by Communist front groups with the idle, passive acquiescence of politicians too frit to endure the endless attacks on the reputations of all who ask sensible question about whether we really need to shut down the West.

There were journalists there from every major news institution on the planet. Not one of these thousands of reporters bothered actually to report what the conference was up to.

All such documents are carefully crafted in a turgid, bureaucratic, calculatedly impenetrable lack of style whose purpose is to induce all who try to read them to ingest a couple of leaden paragraphs and then go and do something more interesting – such as going to their local cemetery to watch coffins warp.

The official in charge of the documentation centre said that no draft recommendations were available. However, I knew the procedures and standing orders, and I knew the recommendations had been drafted. So I politely but very firmly insisted. Sure enough, from deep in a filing cabinet, a grubby copy was produced and given to me.

I asked the official what was in the document. He said: “One hundred and eighty pages of stark, staring lunacy. That’s why we didn’t want to give it out.”

When the piece appeared online, all hell broke loose. The first thing that happened was that, on a hilariously trumped-up pretext, I was banned from the conference.

So I hired a plane and skydived into South Africa from 10,000 feet. The resulting headlines were priceless and, as I had expected, the cowardly bullies of the UN did not dare to enforce their petty ban.

They backed off.

After 24 hours, WordPress, which hosted some 500,000 blog postings every day at that time, wrote to Anthony Watts, the proprietor of his eponymous website, to say that my piece revealing what was actually going on at the conference had received more downloads than all the other 499,999 blog postings on all subjects that day.

And that meant the UN was compelled to abandon two-thirds

of the negotiating text that the Communists had so meticulously prepared. All of the wicked schemes that I had exposed, including the proposal for crimes-againsthumanity trials in an International Climate Court, were hastily dumped. That one piece, by one journalist, set back the Communist agenda by decades.

What is now urgently needed is a well-funded international proWestern, pro-democracy, pro-freemarket, anti-Communist news media empire. It would be successful, for everyone who does not want wall-to-wall wokery-pokery would subscribe. It would run rings round the UN, just as I did. It would lift the blanket of the dark thrown down upon the world by woke censorship.

And it would speak up trenchantly for little children everywhere.

“Wimmin’s reproductive health and rights”, forsooth!

I went back to my lodgings and sat up all night reading the entire document. It was indeed remarkably difficult to stay awake. However, by 3.30 in the morning I had written a piece for WattsUpWithThat.com, the world’s leading climate-change website, exposing the Communists’ latest plans.

For instance, they were proposing to set up an International Climate Court, before which they proposed to empower themselves to hale anyone who expressed the slightest doubt about the Party Line to the effect that the world would come to an end unless capitalism and the West were destroyed.

Climate sceptics would face the capital charge of “crimes against humanity”.

Alas, Poor Foolish People Mary Kearns

“Alas, poor foolish people, what will you do now? Who will take care of you in your trouble?” Archbishop Saint Laurence O’Toole.

Ireland in the late 12th century was seriously in need of Church reform. Devastation rendered by the Norse invasions had left most of the monasteries in ruins and many people were Catholic only in name.

Some new monasteries had been established and others, including Clonmacnoise, had recovered, but the great centres of learning that had earned Ireland the title “Land of Saints and Scholars” were never again the same and the glory of the Golden Age of monasticism was barely remembered. .

Before a century had passed, a reform of the Church had begun, in line with the general reform led

by Rome. In 1129, the man known to history as St. Malachy became Archbishop of Armagh. Malachy initiated many reforms supported by the princes of the northern part of Ireland. When he travelled to Rome to receive the pallium from the Holy Father, Innocent II, Malachy had a significant encounter with Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux and head of the Cistercian order. This eventually led to the founding of the Cistercian monastery of Mellifont.

Henry was named “a Catholic prince labouring to extend the borders of the Church and teach the truth of the Christian Faith to rude and unlettered people.”

Despite some signs of reform, Malachy confided to Bernard how many evils were rampant in the Irish Church at this time. Whether this was sufficient reason or whether it was the additional evidence of ecclesiastical abuses in the country given by other bishops, in 1155, the Holy Father and only English Pope, Adrian IV, commissioned Henry II of England, to invade Ireland. The purpose was to reform the Church and its people and this was authorised by the Papal Bull “Laudabiliter.”

When almost twenty years later, the King of Leinster, Diarmait McMurrough appealed to the English King for aid, the mandate was already in place for an English invasion of Ireland. History has perhaps unjustly laid the blame entirely on the Leinster King for inviting the English to Ireland. As it turned out, it was the Normans, under the banner of Richard de Clare, sometimes known as Strongbow, who actually carried out the invasion. In this he was supported by Irish warriors loyal to Diarmait McMurrough.

This may have been how the English monarch was presented to the Pope but history tells a different story and Henry II is remembered as the man responsible for the death of the holy martyr Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry had little time to spare for Ireland then, however his shadow was ever looming over Ireland.

In 1162 following the death of Archbishop Gregory, Saint Laurence O’Toole was consecrated Archbishop of Dublin by Gelasius, Archbishop of Armagh and successor of St. Malachy. His election was endorsed by the High King, Ruairi O’Connor and the king of Leinster, Diarmait McMurrough who was married to Saint Laurence’s sister. Saint Laurence was then just 32. The community at Glendalough where he had been Abbot supported him and also the clergy and people of Dublin. Although Brian Boru had vanquished the Danes at Clontarf in 1014, Dublin was to a great extent, a Danish or Viking city.

The years in which Saint Laurence O’Toole lived were full of prominent persons whose names are familiar from Irish history. The arrival of Richard de Clare in 1170 and his well trained Norman knights, allied now to the Irish of Leinster, brought about an unprecedented political and cultural instability which needed the intervention of Saint Laurence O’Toole. As Archbishop of Dublin he was able to combine

9th April 2021 Catholic Voice the skill of a leader and reformer with pastoral care of his flock and fearless negotiation with secular authorities.

He introduced Augustinian monks from France to Christ Church Cathedral to help reform the sacred liturgy. A deeply prayerful man, Saint Laurence frequently joined the monks in the early hours to sing the Divine Office. Contemporary sources tell of how afterwards he walked in the graveyard, watching and praying over his city as it wakened to the day.

In 1179, Saint Laurence led the six Irish bishops who attended the Third Lateran Council in Rome. His holiness impressed Pope Alexander III who appointed him Papal Legate to Ireland with the responsibility of reforming the Church and defending it against attack. The Archbishop committed himself to the challenge of re-igniting the Faith and bringing about a reform in the lives of the people, not just in his own diocese but throughout the country.

On his return, Saint Laurence summoned a council of the Irish Church at Clonfert which took firm action against malpractices. This Council deposed seven so-called “lay bishops” and forbade any layman from having “the rule of any church or church matters.” The ordination of the sons of priests and bishops was also prohibited.

niece Aoife, daughter of Dermot McMurrough, had married Richard de Clare. We can only imagine what distress it had caused Saint Laurence to witness this Irish princess, his sister’s child, aligning herself with the foreign invaders.

Even as the peace talks were being conducted, the city of Dublin was attacked by the Normans. Killing and looting took place and Saint Laurence was seen carrying wounded and dead bodies in his arms. He saved other lives by the sheer force of his presence. In 1175 he was one of the signatories of the Treaty of Windsor between King Henry II and the High King of Ireland. This meant that Ruairi O’Connor accepted Henry as his overlord and restyled himself as king only of Connaught while still retaining some authority over the other kings.

Saint Laurence attempted to meet King Henry of England and undertook a perilous sea voyage for this reason. However he failed to achieve a meeting. For the last ten years of his life, Saint Laurence was a constant traveller and often visited England in his efforts to bring about peace between the two countries.

The Archbishop followed King Henry to France and exhausted and ill, this is where he died. His shrine is venerated at Eu in Normandy although his heart was returned to Ireland and reposes in Christchurch despite an attempt to steal it. Many miracles were attributed to his intercession and he was canonised

by Pope Honorius in 1225.

Dublin’s Archbishop carried his people in his heart and on his deathbed, his last words were for them. “Alas, you poor foolish people, what will you do now?

Who will take care of you in your trouble?”

Respected by kings, princes and leaders as a person of honour and integrity, his mediation in matters ecclesial and civil, was eagerly sought by all sides. It was said that Saint Laurence O’Toole was the one man in Ireland that everybody trusted.

A diligent reformer, Saint Laurence was also a compassionate pastor.

He provided food for the poor and destitute of Dublin and fed them from his own house. He continued his works of charity, especially towards homeless children, whom he looked after and housed in his own residence.

Many times his presence alone was enough to put a stop to violence and it was in this way that the Archbishop made his outstanding contribution to negotiating peace between the different factions. He was well-placed to mediate with the Norman leaders as his own

All of the violence that happens within our country is a fever graph. It points to a decay in our civilisation. How are we going to get out?

I’ll tell you one thing, we have to realise maybe why the eagle is our symbol. The eagle always builds its nest always in the mountain crevices.

When the mother pushes the young eagles out of the nest down out of the nest to what must seem like certain death, the mother swoops down the abyss and catches the young and flies up into the sky and repeats the process until the bird has learned to fly.

Moses saw that when he wrote, “As the eagle stirs among the young, so God stirs among the nations.”

Maybe God is stirring us, bringing us to the brink of danger in order that we might begin to examine ourselves and restore the dignity of man and belief in God.

The Biggest Casualty Of Covid?

The psychological devastation caused by teaching children to fear their own hands, other people, the air they breathe and that their very presence poses a lethal threat to others is but one of the many casualties of COVID. While the casualties of government-imposed COVID-19 countermeasures are manifold, the biggest and most tragic of them all is the loss of individual freedoms.

As noted by Jonathan Sumption in his February 15, 2021, Telegraph commentary: What makes us a free society is that, although the state has vast powers, there are conventional limits on what it can do with them. The limits are conventional because they do not depend on our laws but on our attitudes.

There are islands of human life which are our own, a personal space into which the state should not intrude without some altogether exceptional justification.

Liberal democracy breaks down when frightened majorities demand mass coercion of their fellow citizens, and call for our personal spaces to be invaded. These

demands are invariably based on what people conceive to be the public good. They all assert that despotism is in the public interest.

A Fragile Freedom As Sumption points out, “We cannot switch in and out of totalitarianism at will.” We either choose freedom, or we choose to live under authoritarian rule.

Even if (and that’s a big if, at this point) restrictions are lifted, public attitude can place freedom on shaky ground, as public acceptance of overreach will allow for the same to occur again and again at a moment’s notice.

This is a serious problem, as there will always be other epidemics and pandemics. There is always the threat of terrorism and climate change. There will always be a public health calamity, be it obesity or diabetes, that can be used as justification for government intrusion into our private lives.

Personal Liberty Is Worth Fighting For Personal liberty, as Sumption points out, is critically important, and perhaps most important of all, for our mental and physical health, is the freedom to interact with other

human beings. It is an absolutely crucial and most basic of human needs. Infants robbed of physical interaction fail to thrive and are at increased risk of death.

But children, adolescents, adults and the elderly have no lesser need for it. We may tolerate it for longer without marked ill effect, but over time, it takes its toll on health, emotional stability and longevity. The fact that we’re allowing government to ban human interaction is a dire sign of a society at the brink of self-destruction.

Data show the overall non institutionalised infection fatality ratio is 0.26%. People under the age of 40 have a mere 0.01% risk of dying from the infection. The vast majority that test positive for SARS-CoV-2 have no symptoms at all, and most do not get seriously ill.

We Must Relearn To Accept The Inevitabilities Of Life What’s more, the average age of death from COVID-19 is somewhere between 76.9, according to one study, and 82, according to U.K. government data cited by Sumption.

9th April 2021 Catholic Voice Either way, this is right around the average age of death from any cause anyway, and therefore not an outrageous threat to public health. Yet, the public willingly relinquishes the freedom to live a normal life, somehow oddly convinced that by trading in their freedom, people at the end of their life will be spared the pain of death.

They won’t. None of us will.

The inevitabilities of life — which include uncertainty, moment-tomoment risk and the surety of death — demand that we not require people to cease living in order to “save” others from the ramifications of ill health, regardless of their age.

It’s as inhumane as it is illogical.

Rather, the answer, if we really want to protect the masses, is to educate and promote healthy living at all stages of life. Improving your health through a healthy lifestyle, sunshine, fresh air and real food, is the best way to protect the most people. Quarantining and shunning human interaction are probably the worst things you can do for yourself and society at large.

The Press Has Become An Instrument Of Control Historically, the press has been viewed as a crucial instrument for a well-informed public, and thus supportive of a free and democratically-run society. Indeed, this is why journalists and news outlets were known as “the Fourth Estate.” It was an acknowledgement of their societal influence. To be effective, the press had to develop a certain amount of public trust.

Today, trust in mainstream media has dramatically eroded, and for good reason.

Time and again, reporters and entire news outlets have been caught peddling fake news, and when the press misleads rather than

informs the public of the facts, they become tools for tyranny. Their viewers become more ignorant by the day rather than more informed, and thus more easily controlled and manipulated.

A Century Of Controlled Media As detailed in “Reuters and BBC Caught Taking Money for Propaganda Campaign,” infiltration and manipulation of the media has been a routine occurrence since 1915, when J.P. Morgan interests, including the steel and shipbuilding industries, purchased editorial control of 25 of the most influential newspapers, thereby allowing them to control news about military preparedness, financial policies and other stories deemed crucial to their private and corporate interests.

Then, in 1948, the CIA launched Operation Mockingbird, a clandestine media infiltration campaign that allowed the agency to control and inject its own propaganda into the mainstream press.

The modern propaganda machine also includes Big Tech, which allows for previously unthinkable information control through automated censorship across a much broader spectrum of sources.

Literally overnight, an individual or company involved in the dissemination of truthful information that goes against the status quo can have their website shadow banned by search engines, their social media accounts eliminated, their web hosting and email services cancelled and their online payment systems shut down. From one day to the next, you, your thoughts, opinions and all your hard work can be effectively erased.

To What Aim Control?

It’s important to realise that authoritarian dictators are not, in

CITIZEN ABUSE 25 fact, trying to help you. They’re trying to change you. Censorship does not protect the public. It’s a control mechanism, as you are unlikely to rebel against an injustice that you don’t even know exists, or if you know about it, your understanding of the problem is diametrically opposed to the truth; hence, you’ll support a “solution” that will perpetuate or deepen the problem.

At an even deeper level, censorship and information suppression is an effort to alter your cognitive faculties, because how do you even define people and things that you are not allowed to criticise?

As noted by Taibbi, Big Tech and media are tools for politicians, corporations and the intelligence industry, the interests of which are frequently diametrically opposed to that of the people.

Chemical companies cannot sell their toxic wares if an informed public shuns them. The fake food industry cannot flourish if the public understands the basics of health. Technocracy cannot be implemented if an informed public opposes the agenda, and so on.

What we see clearer than ever these days, is the schism in journalism where the old-school norms of gathering data and then delivering it to the audience and allowing them to make up their own minds as to whether it’s good or bad has been replaced by subjective interpretation of the data.

Essentially, most mainstream reporters now tell you how to think about a given topic. They even tell us how to think about people who refuse to think the way they’re instructed to think. That way, the public ends up doing the dirty work of censoring, cancelling and dehumanising the undesirables for them.

It has facilitated the dumping of toxic products onto the people of the Global South, and even used the world’s poor as guinea pigs for drug experiments.

The Great Reset — A Plan To Capitalize On Covid-19 Pandemic For a time, there was so much uncertainty about SARS-CoV-2 and the infection it causes, you’re forgiven if you opted to err on the side of caution. known by the doctors involved in administering the vaccines to have been used in Kenya, our opinion is that the Kenya ‘anti-tetanus’ campaign was reasonably called into question by the Kenya Catholic Doctors Association as a front for population growth reduction.

By showing proof that you’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine, through a digital certificate or app on your phone, the hope is that you can once again board an airplane and travel freely, attend a concert or enjoy a meal in your favourite restaurant, just like you used to.

Certain vaccines have also been found to cause infertility as an unexpected side effect. For example, a 2018 study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health found that women who received HPV vaccinations suffered higher rates of infertility.

Except, being required to present your “papers” in order to live your life isn’t actually freedom at all — it’s a loss of personal liberty that you once had, one that disappeared right before your eyes and one that’s setting the stage for even more intrusive surveillance and privacy erosion.

Letters Recent Vatican Statement Dear Editor, The Vatican’s recent re-statement of Church teaching, in which only couples aspiring to live a married life, may have their relationships Blessed, has predictably raised the hackles of those critical of everything distinctively Christian. The evasion and ignorance underlying so much of this commentary is so tiring and stifling.

Wouldn’t it be strange if the Catholic Church, acquiesced with anything that is destructive of God’s life within us?

To be authentic the Catholic Church must repeat and represent in every generation Jesus Christ’s call to “Repent, and believe the Good News.” For us who are members of His Church, this means that we have discovered that God loves us more than we can ever imagine.

Vaccination: An Act Of Solidarity Or State Compliance?

Dear Editor, Bishops conferences world-wide including the Irish Bishops, have issued statements in support of government vaccination programmes ‘for the common good’. They base this on the hotly disputed premise that we are in a global pandemic, but offer no proof.

Consequently, global vaccination is being pushed on countries. Behind this push are sinister groups & organisations such as the Gates Foundation, whose ‘preferential option for the poor’ & indeed us all, is to impose population control.

Statements from the highest levels of the Catholic Church have justified the use of abortion tainted vaccines. This is perplexing to those of us who refuse to take a vaccine dependant on foetal cell lines on moral grounds. The fact that a tiny human being made in the image & likeness of God has been torn from its mother’s womb & has been further exploited in socalled ‘medical research’ is abhorrent to this writer & reminiscent of Nazi experimentation.

A most welcome statement was issued recently by ‘the International Coalition of Women Doctors,

Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Kazakhstan has called for a “new pro-life movement” to protest “abortion-tainted medicines like Covid vaccine” He states “there now comes a time, a new phase… of all pro-life movements to protest, clearly & unambiguously, against abortion-tainted medicines, against the abuse of the body parts of the unborn (LifesiteNews Feb 2021).

Pete Balinski of Lifesite news comments that Bishop Schneider’s call “comes in the wake of revelations of how researchers procure cell lines used in the development of numerous vaccines – including a number of Covid vaccines – from babies who

were aborted live in order to have usable tissue” Bishop Doran, in his letter “Vaccination – An act of Solidarity” naïvely, perhaps, commends Astra Zeneca/Oxford University for making a vaccine available to the poor on a not-for-profit basis. He may not be aware that the Oxford University Vaccine group is recruiting children as young as 6 years old for a Covid study group. (Oxford Vaccine G r o u p @ O x f o r d Va c G r o u p ) .

Children will be injected with a Covid -19 experimental serum.

The funding comes from Bill Gates, a philanthropist who funds population control/pro-abortion/ climate change initiatives worldwide (ChurchMilitant.com).

Bishop Doran also mentions in his letter “the significant capacity of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland” suggesting that Ireland could produce vaccines “as a service to developing countries”. Sadly Ireland also kills her own children, having legalised abortion. Without any moral guidelines for research practices, many pharmaceuticals may take advantage of such a resource of ‘experimental material’.

“If we, human beings, are committed to perpetuating our species, we have no choice left but to eradicate these highly infectious viral variants.
