Anthony Murphy As we go to press the “United” States of America is on the brink with half the population enthusiastically embracing the culture of death. Though we may not know the real results for months, due to massive voter fraud across the board, the media has declared Biden the winner and he has been congratulated by political leaders across the globe.

But the media do not decide elections and legal challenges are still before the courts so it would be prudent to await judicial rulings on the challenges.

All that said, let us proceed with the assumption that “catholic” in name only, Joe Biden, does prevail. What can the Church expect?

— All the pro-life gains of the past three years will be eviscerated and there will be support abortion and infanticide under any circumstance.

— The Little Sisters of the Poor, EWTN, and a host of other faithbased groups will be back in court, doing a rear-guard action to defend their religious liberty.

— Catholic schools will not only have to be reconciled with the death of any and all parental freedom of choice initiatives but can count on massively intrusive regulations designed to make Catholic institutions carbon copies of the godless government schools, especially as that relates to human sexuality.

— President Trump’s holding in abeyance of the so-called “Johnson Amendment” will be reversed immediately, so that once more the muzzle will be placed on the mouths of clergy.

— Religious liberty will be restricted in the name of “equality” .

— Promotion of “transgender rights” as the number one civil rights issue of our time.

— Mandate face masks across the nation interminably, keeping government’s boot on the neck of the economy and keeping people of faith socially distanced with continuing restrictions of worship and access to the sacraments.

— Allow minors as young as eight years old to choose dangerous hormone treatments to treat childhood and adolescent genderdysphoria without parental approval and despite parental objections: A temporary measure leading to a lifetime of pain and regret.

— Deny counselling for anyone with unwanted same-sex attraction and gender-dysphoria.

— Squash the fossil fuel industry, tossing up to ten million people out of work, and ending affordable transportation and energy for all but elites.

— Open borders, creating a tsunami of illegal immigration and maintaining their grip on power through the creation of future voting fodder.

As happened in Ireland the secularists will come gunning for Catholics first, simply because the Church presents the biggest threat with her unwavering moral teachings and with her very large institutional footprint through schools, social services and media presence.

And as in Ireland they will capitalise on the historical, now-somewhatlatent but always-ready-to-be-revived anti-Catholicism. The late former abortionist, Bernard Nathanson, documented how NARAL did just that in highlighting the Catholic bishops as the villains in the fight, precisely to ignite religious bigotry. As has been happening in Poland, priests and nuns will be assaulted on the streets and churches will be vandalised.

But perhaps worst of all: because Joe Biden claims to be a Catholic, if he is elected president, the United States will offer a horribly distorted portrait of Catholicism and what it means to be a Catholic man to the entire world.

If Biden and Harris prevail in the race for the White House, brace yourself for a horrifying fundamental transformation of America, with Christian faith and morals in the crosshairs.

This will have global impact because as a global leader, other nations tend to follow America. What happens in America affects the rest of the world, be it for good or bad.

Let’s end on a positive note. In spite of all the bad news, I would highlight one piece of incredibly good news, namely, that anecdotal evidence informs us that

20th November 2020 Catholic Voice a record number of American bishops and priests spoke with total clarity regarding the matters at stake in the US election of 2020. Even if their counsel did not bear the hoped-for fruit, we should recall the wise observation of St. Mother Teresa: “God does not call us to be successful, only faithful.” Their brave and strong voices will be ever more important in the difficult months ahead.

In America as in Europe the battles lines are drawn, they have been for some time but this election has focused our minds on what is at stake. There is less fence sitting and more of us are speaking out even if it means losing good friends or alienating family.

The resistance movement is growing for we know we MUST speak the Truth no matter what the cost. Let us therefore be bold and continue to encourage and pray for Catholics to reaffirm their love for Western Christian civilisation and their willingness to defend its remnants and culture. We can be confident that no matter how fierce the attack or the personal cost, God will not be mocked and the gates of Hell will not prevail.

The West and Christian civilisation will rise again, fulfilling Our Lady’s prophetic words in Fatima, “in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph!”

Declan Ganley Takes Legal Challenge Against Covid Restrictions On Religious Services Patrick Hayes

Galway businessman Declan Ganley is taking a constitutional challenge against the government’s Covid-19 restrictions on public worship, citing his “genuine desire to be able to attend Public Mass”.

The entrepreneur is being represented by Gately Tweed, an international law firm, in a judicial review that was brought before the High Court on 6th November.

Mr Justice Charles Meenan adjourned the matter to 8 December, directing that the State be notified of the application for permission to bring the challenge, but warned that the action may be moot by 1 December when Level 5 restrictions are lifted.

It is understood Ganley claims that the prohibition on public worship is unconstitutional due to provisions that guarantee freedom of religion and protect public worship in Article 44 of Bunreacht na hÉireann.

Speaking on behalf of his client, Paul Tweed said: “The effect of the Regulations imposed on 22 October

is to make it unlawful for a priest to leave his home to celebrate, or for an ordinary Catholic to leave his or her home to attend, a public Mass.”

The Chief State Solicitor’s office is understood to have asked Ganley not to issue court proceedings, but a delay in addressing the matter is thought to have prompted today’s action.

CEO of Rivada Networks, Ganley (52) is a devout Catholic who has previously campaigned against the repeal of the 8th Amendment and the passage of the Lisbon Treaty.

He also founded the pan-European political party Libertas, but was unsuccessful in his bid for election to the European Parliament.

Although all religious services, except funerals and weddings, have been banned to the public, places of worship do remain open for private prayer.

Five Catholic bishops who met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin last month were unable to convince the government to reverse its policy on the matter, whilst critics of the decision have insisted that the holding of public worship has not been the cause of any transmission so far.

The court is expected to be told that the decision to ban public worship is unnecessary due to the alleged lack of evidence indicating a significant risk of transmission within places of worship.

“Public Masses have been responsibly conducted under stringent risk mitigation protocols. Based on HSE data, our client does not believe that public Masses are associated with any greater risk of Covid 19 infection than other important activities, including schooling and childcare, which are permitted under current Regulations,” Tweed stated in a press release.

The judicial review proceedings were initiated against the Minister for Health, whilst Ireland and the Attorney General are notice parties to the case.

Making The Most Of The Sacraments An Essential Part Of Our Spiritual Life (Part 2) Canon Francis Altiere I.C.K.S.P.

The Incarnation, The Church And The Sacraments Jesus Christ, though he ascended once again into heaven forty days after his resurrection from the dead, remains present for us today in the Church, which he founded to continue his work; in particular, the sacraments of the Church are like the continuation of the Incarnation of the Son of God. As Pope Benedict XVI once put it: “a slogan that was popular some years back: ‘Jesus, yes; Church, no,’ is totally inconceivable with the intention of Christ. We cannot have Jesus without the reality he created and in which he communicates himself.

Between the Son of God-made-flesh and his Church there is a profound, unbreakable and mysterious continuity by which Christ is present today in his people. He is always contemporary with us, he is always contemporary with the Church, built on the foundation of the Apostles and alive in the succession of the Apostles” (general audience, 15 March 2006).

Thus we can understand why Saint Paul so often refers to the Church simply as the “Body of Christ,” since it

is the Church founded by Christ which continues his work on earth today. The Church founded by Christ is that Church built on the foundation of the Apostles (Revelation 21:14) and in particular on the rock of Saint Peter (Matthew 16:18), in other words, the Catholic Church, which goes back in an unbroken chain of two thousand years to Jesus Christ himself. It is to this Church that Jesus has entrusted his teaching and his sacraments.

To understand how Jesus continues to be present among us today we need to say a word about the great mystery of the Incarnation – the mystery of “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:31) – since the sacraments, like the Church herself, are the continuation and the consequence of the Incarnation. Since human beings are composed of body and soul – a union of matter and spirit – Our Lord chose to respect human nature when redeeming us, first by coming among us as a true man, like us in all things but sin, and then by giving us his (invisible) grace by means of (perceptible) signs. It is in this sense that the sacraments are like the continuation of the Incarnation, which is the taking on of a visible human nature by the eternal Son of God. God – who is an eternal, invisible spirit – chooses to save us through visible means, since we ourselves are a union of matter and spirit, body and soul. Catholicism is the religion of the Incarnation, the religion founded by the God-mademan, Jesus Christ.

When we say that “the Word was made flesh” (John 1:14), this does not, of course, mean that God turned into a man, in such a way that he would somehow have stopped being God: that is naturally impossible. The Incarnation means that Jesus Christ – who is true God from all eternity, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit – also became man at a given moment in time when, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, he assumed a human nature. He united this human nature to his divine nature, while remaining of course one person, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, God the Son. This central mystery of our faith is beautifully summed up in one of the liturgical texts of the Christmas season: Deus homo factus est: id quod fuit parmansit, et quod non erat assumpsit, “God is made man. That which he was, he remains; and that which he was not, he takes up” (January 1st, office of Lauds).

All Souls Day - Jakub Shikaneder (1855 - 1924) It should now be clear that, in the designs of God’s providence, the Incarnation, the founding of the Church and the institution of the sacraments are all parts of one, unified plan for the salvation of the human race.

We must never separate Jesus Christ, the Church or the sacraments from each other. During his earthly life, Jesus Christ instituted each of the seven sacraments and entrusted them to his Church so that throughout the ages we would be able to receive his graces.

Through the sacraments we continue to be in vital contact with Jesus Christ, just like the people of Galilee two thousand years ago, though in a different and more mysterious way. Just as the humanity of Jesus Christ serves as the “instrument,” or tangible cause, by which his divinity carried out its work among men, so too the sacraments are like the “instruments” by which Jesus Christ, invisible head of the Church, continues to give us his grace. It is important for us to understand that the sacraments are far from being a distracting intermediary in our relationship with Jesus Christ: on the contrary, they are the privileged means by which Jesus Christ exercises his role of mediator between us and the Father. The Church and her ministers are not parallel mediators in competition with Our Lord; they are always subordinated to Christ and, according to his wise plan, they are in fact the instruments of his mediation. “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you” (Jn 20:21), he said to his Apostles.

Question : Do you know your Father!

Everyone loves to get to really know their Father and that can take a lifetime.

But we also have Our wonderful Father in Heaven who created us and is waiting for us when we pass from this life.

The question is do we know Him! Have we tried to get to know Him! Of course it is never too late!

The Four Ends Of The Mass Father Gavan Jennings

Atonement As he underwent the passion, and especially during the crucifixion, Jesus was praying for all sinners. He prays to his Father to forgive them “for they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34). He forgives the Good Thief for his sins and promises him he will see heaven that very day (see Lk 23:43). On the Cross, and so in the Mass, Jesus pours out his blood for us (see Lk 22:20) so that our sins may be made up for, or “atoned” for.

Our ability to pray the Mass can be greatly increased by knowing “the four ends of the Mass” (as they are traditionally called): adoration, thanksgiving, atonement and petition. Sometimes we are only aware of one or two of the ends (or goals) of the Mass – adoration or petition for instance – and are unaware of the other ends. In particular it is good to remember these four ends when we give thanks after Mass; we can even use the four ends as a structure for our thanksgiving and for our daily prayer.

Let’s look at each of these ends one by one.

Adoration The first and most important end of the Mass is adoration. To adore is to worship, praise, and glorify God. Sometimes the Mass is actually called the “sacrifice of praise” primarily because through the Mass we join in Jesus’ own praise of his Father. This is the most important end because to adore God is the greatest action we can ever do – it is what we shall do for all eternity in heaven.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the Mass as “the source and summit of the Christian

life” (CCC1324), meaning that everything we do in our lives as Christians is directed to the Mass (summit), and everything receives its impetus (source) from the Mass.

And of course we also worship the Eucharist itself in the Mass (and also after the Mass before Jesus in the Tabernacle) “by, among other ways, genuflecting or bowing deeply as a sign of adoration of the Lord” (CCC1378).

Thanksgiving The very word Eucharist comes from the Greek word meaning “to give thanks”, and so it is no surprise that thanksgiving is one of the four ends of the Mass. Nobody is better able to thank the Father for all the gifts of creation than Jesus.

At certain points during the Mass, such as during the Preface, we explicitly give thanks to Father, through Christ, for creation and also for our redemption. Again during the Offertory “we give thanks to the Creator for bread and wine, fruit of the ‘work of human hands,’ but above all as ‘fruit of the earth’ and ‘of the vine’ – gifts of the Creator” (CCC1333).

We should be very conscious that Christ’s body is “given up for us,” and his blood “shed for the many for the forgiveness of sins” as we pray during the Mass itself.

Petition Because in the Mass we pray to the Father, through his beloved Son, it is a most powerful means “to obtain spiritual or temporal benefits from God” (CCC1414). In the Prayer of the Faithful we explicitly make our petitions “in communion with the whole Church in heaven and on earth” (CCC1354); such prayer must be very powerful before God. But we should remember that, while it is good to ask God for many things through the Mass, at the same time we are actually receiving something infinitely superior: Christ Himself.

Receiving Christ in the Eucharist is the closest thing to entering heaven that we can experience in this life: “There is no surer pledge or dearer sign of this great hope in the new heavens and new earth ‘in which righteousness dwells,’ than the Eucharist” (CCC1405) Fr Gavan Jennings is a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei and editor of Position Papers. Be Part Of The Miracle | China Church Solidarity

have been visiting China since 1979 and working systematically there since 2000. In 2014, we were able to open an Augustinian Sisters’ Active contemplative Monastery (pictures below). I unhesitatingly call this a wonder and a miracle in the context of Communist China.

The foundation of this monastery can be sourced to many, including the prayers and financial support of many in Ireland and Britain, but in a special way to the extraordinary faith of two people: the Mother Foundress, Sr Mary, who with her family lived through all the oppression of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s in China and the positive response of an elderly bishop despite his suffering during the same period.

I once asked Sr Mary’s Bishop how was it possible for him to say yes when asked to sponsor this Contemplative Monastery in his diocese in such difficulties for Christians in China. His reply was profound: “When Sister Mary told me her story and the dream of her contemplative vocation, my twenty years in prison, ten of these in solitary confinement, flashed to memory, painful as they were.

But in a moment I saw the point of it all. It was a grace that allowed me to recognise and understand her call to initiate a contemplative

monastery, as that was the only option available to me while in prison – Contemplation.”

The Monastery was formally opened in 2014. However, permission to open the Monastery was given by the government with a BIG CONDITION, namely, that a Nursing Home for the Aged would be attached to the monastery. This was acceptable to the sisters and would constitute the “active” part of their mission.

A New Catholicism Dear Editor, Just when the US is about to make a decision between a pro-abortion and a pro-life president, the Pope decides to, effectively, diminish support for those lacking visibility, a voice, a vote, a union, or money. (Encylical Fratelli Tutti) There’s money in actually killing babies too. But only expense in defending their right to life.

In Ireland, the State (the taxpayer) gives €450 to General Practitioners for a dead baby, and only €150 for a live one. (Statutory Instrument 598 of 2018. This can be checked on the web).

“You Have Saved The Best Wine Until Last” Dear Editor, The founder of the Catholic TV station EWTN, Mother Angelica, often reminded the elderly members of her audience that ‘old age is the best wine’ when it comes to our prayer life and our dynamism as intercessors or prayer warriors.

This is counter cultural as in our day, youth, strength and beauty are idolised by society at large and the elderly are often overlooked and forgotten. But for believers who have spent their lives walking with their Saviour, deepening their relationship with Him and have experienced His power and love in their lives – this is the time to sprint the last hundred yards into His Kingdom!

The elderly are the treasure of the church and every prayer, ache and pain are useful in building the kingdom; for some, walking upstairs to the bathroom is like a climb to Calvary, a mighty act of intercession it can be...

Perhaps Tennyson spotted this when he wrote:Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’ We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

We must never tire of praying and offering sacrifices for our Irish bishops most especially when it seems that they are failing us. St James tells us that the reason we ask for things and do not receive them is because we ask for the wrong reasons. We ask to satisfy ourselves. The reason we should pray for our bishops is because we seek the Glory of God and because we realise that God is not glorified as He ought to be glorified when our Catholic churches are closed to the public for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and when Catholics are forbidden from receiving Holy Communion on the tongue which is according to the norms of the Catholic Church.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen The title of this article comes from St John’s Gospel. The first part is from chapter 8. This is the chapter where the woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus. Later, Jesus is teaching in the temple and the Pharisees accuse Him of not telling the truth. Many of the Jews believed in Jesus on account of His replies to these Pharisees and it is to these believing Jews that Jesus addresses the words “And You Shall Know The Truth, And The Truth Shall Make You Free!” (John 8:32) The second part of the title is Pontius Pilate’s question to Jesus when Jesus tells Him: “Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.

Pilate saith to him: What is truth?”

(John 18:38) There is a lot of talk these days about confusion in the Catholic Church. It is my view that there is no confusion within the Catholic Church, properly understood, because the Catholic Church is indefectible, i.e. is incapable of teaching falsehoods.

The reason that many people including baptised Catholics may be confused is because they are not fully conversant with exactly what the Catholic Church teaches. They have not been properly catechised and they have not taken the time themselves to study official Catholic Church teaching.

St Paul, when writing his letter to the Galatians says: “I wonder that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel.

Which is not another, only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema.

As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema.

For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men?

If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

For I give you to understand, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.

For neither did I receive it of man, nor did I learn it; but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

(Galatians 1:6-12) The difficulty for those who do not take the time to study official Catholic doctrine is, how will they know if someone is preaching a different gospel? If you don’t know the original teachings, how will you know if someone has changed them or if they are teaching something different? The answer is, you cannot know. Therefore it is very important for Catholics to continue studying the Catholic faith until the end of their days. For those who have the responsibility of passing on the faith to others, I am thinking particularly of Catholic parents, then the duty to know the Catholic faith is obligatory because the salvation of the children God may choose to send you, in ordinary terms, is dependent on you fulfilling your duty by seeing to it that your children are properly catechised.

The doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church come from God and the duty of Popes, Cardinals and Bishops is to defend the Doctrine of the Faith. They are the guardians of the Deposit of Faith and they have also been entrusted

by God with the command to teach the Catholic Faith in its fullness to the whole world.

“And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth.

Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

What are Catholics to do when someone in authority in the Catholic Church contradicts Catholic Church teaching? St Paul tells us to ‘let him be anathema’. We should not listen to them or follow them but we will not know that what they teach is false unless we have studied our Catholic faith.

In his letter to the Romans St Paul tells us the following about homosexual relations.

If Catholic teaching on marriage and human sexuality is true, then civil non-marital sexual unions, regardless of whether they are heterosexual or homosexual in nature, cannot also be right.

We live in what might be called a ‘post truth’ society where rational thought and absolute truths are rejected.

The truth is what you decide it to be and nobody is wrong except those who teach or say that there are absolute truths. The reality of course is that there are absolute truths and Jesus Christ teaches us that our freedom depends on accepting these absolute truths which come from God. Those who seek to enslave us by lying to us, are the ones who now control the main stream narrative and they do this very effectively through modern technology. One morning I was sitting with my youngest daughter after breakfast at our kitchen table. I turned to her and said something like ‘well how are you’. To our surprise my smart-phone answered us saying that she (the smartphone) was fine.

We laughed at this but then a thought dawned on me. Our smart-phones are constantly tuned into our conversations ‘listening’ for key words that trigger a response. We tend to take our smart phones everywhere with us. I realised that usually when I went to confession, my smart-phone was in my pocket. I now make sure to leave it in the car or to leave it at home when I am going to confession.

The big social media giants, google, twitter & facebook actively filter and suppress information that does not accord with their agenda for the world. Laws are being passed in most western societies which target individuals and organisations which promote any message contrary to the ‘official’ narrative. At least three doctors in Ireland have recently been dismissed from their posts because they dared to public;y question government policy in relation to covid-19.

In the UK in 2014, Justice Richard Page was reprimanded for expressing his view to colleagues on a same-sex adoption case in England, that children do best when raised by a mother and a father. Justice Page was ordered to undergo ‘equality training’. When he repeated his belief about the benefits of having a mother and a father in a public Radio interview he was dismissed as a magistrate and suspended as a non executive director in the health service. His case is due to go before the appeals court in England this month.

All of our online activity is carefully monitored. For the most part this has to do with targeted advertising but it is becoming almost impossible to avoid the ‘watchers’. I recently purchased a tablet device for use with the piano at home. In order to set the device up I had to have a google account. I didn’t want to give access to my private e-mail as the device will be used by more than one person, so I set up a new account. In order to activate the account I had to give my phone number so the device could send me a text to verify my account.

It doesn’t bother me too much but this level of personal data collection is intrusive and potentially very dangerous in the wrong hands, especially if used for political purposes or to suppress those whose views dissent from the government narrative.

Stories of Saint Teresa Of Avila Extract from ‘The Consolations of Purgatory’ by Rev Father H Faure S.M. Don Bernardin of Mendoza, a Spanish gentle man, wishing to give proof of his devotion to the Blessed Virgin, offered to give St. Teresa a house which belonged to him near Valladolid if she would found a convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

“To tell the truth,”; says St. Teresa, “I was not very willing to establish a convent at so great a distance from the city. But the offer was made with so good a will, and to so good an end, that I was unwilling to deprive this young gentleman of the merit which he might derive from his generosity.

St. Teresa immediately began her journey, without any preparation, and arrived at Valla dolid on the Feast of St. Lawrence. After such arrangements had been made as were absolutely necessary that they might be able to observe enclosure, the Holy Sacrifice was offered.

The alternative is to vote for a person who is manipulated by the deep state, gravely compromised by scandals and corruption, who will do to the United States what Prime Minister Conte is doing to Italy, President Macron to France, Prime Minster Sanchez to Spain, and so on. The blackmailable nature of Joe Biden – just like that of the prelates of the Vatican’s “magic circle” – will expose him to be used unscrupulously, allowing illegitimate powers to interfere in both domestic politics as well as international balances. It is obvious that those who manipulate him already have someone worse than him ready, with whom they will replace him as soon as the opportunity arises.

WE CAN ASSIST THE HOLY SOULS EVEN WHEN WE CANNOT GO TO MASS Mary Kearns

November is the month dedicated to the Holy Souls and the thoughts of Catholic people turn to the souls of the faithful departed offering many prayers for their release from Purgatory. Some people also observe the pious practice of fast and abstinence for the entire month and offer this penance for the relief of the holy souls.

Hours of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament are encouraged and when visiting a church or cemetery from All Souls Day until the 8th November, a Plenary Indulgence may be gained for the holy souls by observing the conditions of Confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and by having the intention of being sincerely detached from all sin. If we are not able to avail of the sacraments at the present time, a Plenary Indulgence may still be gained.

The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary announced an opportunity for a plenary indulgence during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Although we are to avail of the

normal conditions of Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion and Prayer for the Pope’s intentions as soon as we are permitted, we can still gain a Plenary Indulgence by carrying out at least one of the following. This applies to those suffering from the Coronavirus and those taking care of them: • Uniting ourselves through the media with celebration of Mass; • Reciting the Rosary; • The Stations of the Cross’ • Reciting the Creed, the Our Father, and “a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters.”

The faithful not suffering from the coronavirus can: “Implore the Almighty God for the end of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted, and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to Himself.”

In addition to the usual conditions mentioned above for a Plenary

Indulgence, at least one of the following must be carried out: • Visit the Blessed Sacrament or Eucharistic adoration.

• Reading the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour • Reciting Holy Rosary • Pious exercise of the Way of the Cross • Reciting the Chaplet of Divine Mercy We can assist the souls in Purgatory by applying the Indulgence to them instead of to ourselves.

The Indulgence cannot however be applied to any living person other than ourselves. All of this is laudable and is in accordance with the Church’s traditions and the devotional practices of Catholic people for many generations.

All Souls Day is one of the few occasions in the liturgical year when all priests are permitted to offer Mass three times in the same day. This reinforces the tremendous value the Church places on the offering of the holy sacrifice.

When the faithful assist at Mass it is often to offer up that Mass for a special intention. In the present circumstances it is of even greater importance that we arrange to have Masses offered for the Holy Souls although we are not permitted to attend in person.

We should always bear in mind that when the priest offers Mass, it is Christ himself who is offering the Mass in the person of the priest. As Fr. Martin von Cochem describes in ‘The Incredible Catholic Mass’, the Holy Sacrifice is not alone the antidote to all evil, but is the direct line to the heart of God. It is of inestimable value to have Mass offered for the soul of an individual and of course for all the souls in Purgatory.

The custom of having a Mass said for the deceased goes back to the early Church. Inscriptions found on the catacombs in Rome date from the second century.

Saint Augustine, who died in 430 recorded in his Confessions the wish of his dying mother Monica, who asked that wherever he would find himself that he would remember to pray for her at Mass. Another example comes from Pope Saint Gregory (d.604) who exhorted the faithful never to hesitate to offer prayers for the dead.

While having a Mass said for the holy souls is of great value it is even more important to have this done when the person is alive. If we are aware that someone is gravely ill and not expected to live, this is the time we should arrange to have Mass offered for them. The reason for this is that in this life we can actively cooperate with the grace received. Due to this we have the opportunity to grow in holiness whereas the soul in Purgatory is only able to receive this grace in a passive manner.

“All the Masses which you hear, or are said for you, will await you at your death: they will go to the judgement seat; they will plead for mercy for you. One Mass said in your lifetime will do more to free the soul from the punishment of sin than many Masses after death. For our sojourn in this world is a time of grace, afterwards comes the time of just retribution; now it will be far easier to make our peace with our Judge than it will be hereafter” (The Incredible Catholic Mass) It is regrettable that the practice has declined of having a Mass offered for the soul of a person who has died or indeed for any other intention. Many people now make donations and purchase special sympathy cards available in some parishes and religious houses. These cards are inscribed in a way that states a person’s name will be included in all Masses and prayers of the community during the coming year. While this is praiseworthy it should not be confused with having a Mass offered for an individual, whether living or dead.

When the above practice takes the place of requesting a special Mass for the departed, souls in Purgatory are deprived of the great benefit of Mass being offered especially for them.

The souls in Purgatory are helpless when it comes to themselves and the Church has not given definite teaching on whether or not these souls are permitted to assist the living by their prayers and sufferings.

However some saints have claimed that the holy souls are able to help those who pray to them. Saint Alphonsus for example, is one saint who believed that because the souls In Purgatory are saved and beloved

by God, there is nothing to obstruct their prayers for

Saint Alphonsus also refers to Saint Catherine of Bologna, a Poor Clare mystic from the fifteenth century who claimed that her entreaties to the souls in Purgatory were immediately answered. Nonetheless, while the Church always prays for the holy souls she does not invoke their prayers on our behalf.

As we contemplate the Communion of Saints as an article of faith, we should be consoled by Catholic doctrine, based on scripture and defined by the Council of Trent.We can be sure that our prayers on earth have the effect of reducing the suffering of the souls in Purgatory and shortening the time before they are admitted to the Beatific Vision. The most effective means of doing this is by offering Mass for them. While our beloved departed are probably uppermost in our thoughts, it is a great charity to have Mass offered for others, perhaps those we believed wounded or harmed us in some way during their life, and of course, for poor souls who have nobody to pray for them.

Tuam Babies - Some Factual Statistics Stephen Verity

1918 Flu 20 Million Died The secular State and the secular media faulted Catholic nuns for having interred infants in unmarked graves, one on top of the other, although nearly everyone was being interred in this way during the impoverished pre-vaccination and pre-antibiotics eras when up to 70% of all infants were dying worldwide. This was when about 50 million people (twenty thousand of whom were Irish) died during the 1918 flu epidemic, when 10 thousand died of TB in Ireland in 1916 alone, when 50 thousand Irish people died of cholera before Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of charity came to the rescue, when 41,000 infants died over a thirty year period in one of the many Britishrun foundling hospitals in Dublin, when 3,000 bodies were uncovered in a single Bristol grave which was one of many in Britain, when over a million bodies, most of whom were children, were interred in a mass grave in the state of New York and millions of British colonists in mass graves all over Africa and Asia and in the Australia of the sugar slaves.

Unpaid Nuns Unpaid nuns who ran orphanages such as the one in Tuam (where less than a thousand infants died over a thirty-five year period and where epidemics of incurable and contagious tuberculosis, smallpox, typhoid, cholera, flu and diphtheria, were an ever-present threat to the infants) would be accused of child-trafficking because they had facilitated childless American couples who were anxious to adopt and rescue the undernourished offspring of the irresponsible fathers who had abandoned the infants to the care of the nuns before absconding and leaving them without names or identities.

Worse still, these unpaid nuns who had to give names to the nameless offspring of the absconded fathers, would be investigated for allegedly

falsifying documents and refusing to reveal the true identities of the infants, and this at a time when the State was refusing to reveal the identities of sperm-donating fathers.

Damned For Being Kind The unpaid nuns who ran the Mother and Baby Homes would even be accused of cruelty because they required the unmarried mothers there to make a working contribution in their cash-strapped laundries, and this in an era when unwed mothers who were branded as ‘irresponsible’, were being sterilised in Germany, in Sweden and in Britain where Winston Churchill said he had a list of 120,000 individuals who ought to be sterilised, and in the US where 65,000 individuals were sterilised between 1907 and 1981. Although the Magdalene laundries were described as punitive prisons by the hostile secular media, the official McAleese report stated that the majority of the women spent less than one year in these institutions, and the same report laid to rest some of the wildest accusations about the laundries on television and in films such as The Magdalene Sisters.

Cesspool Of Lies And Slander In support of the McAleese report, Dr Jacinta Prunty the historian who was reacting against the ‘punitive prison’ smear, found that the laundries were examples of women helping women by giving them a safe place where there was freedom to come and go at a time when the State and the wider society which included the absconded Magdalene fathers, were unwilling to support them. Enquiries such as the one

by Brian Nugent into the Tuam ‘cesspool’ smear in the media, found that (like the one to the effect that Savita Halappanavar had died for want of an abortion rather than from sepsis) it was an example of the kind of lie that could travel half-way around the world before the truth had put its shoes on. The so-called ‘cesspool’ itself which the nuns were said to have constructed, only came into existence twenty years after the nuns had departed.

not to challenge the evidence of abuse submitted by victims on condition that the records of it were destroyed subsequently.

Once the unchallenged evidence had been submitted however, the State shamefully reneged on the agreement in 2015 when the Labour minister for education introduced legislation for the preservation of the records. This caused the religious orders (which had educated anyone who was anything in the State at a time when corporal punishment was legal in the schools) to complain bitterly that ‘future generations will naively take as truth the submissions to the Redress Board and lead to the eternal besmirching of the names of good people’, injustice heaped on injustice as in the case of the tragic Nora Wall.

Gross Exaggeration Members of the religious orders (who knew how economical with

the truth angry institutionalised young people could become once they had been abandoned by their absconded fathers and disciplined by the legal corporal punishment that was now being describing as ‘abuse’) had further reason for complaining in 2019 when it was discovered that the Ryan commission into abuses, grossly over-calculated the number of those who had attended industrial schools at 170,000 when the real figure was 42,000 which corresponded to that in non-Catholic countries with populations of a similar size.

This discovery contributed to the undermining of the credibility of the entire report especially after it was revealed that there had been no enquiry into the abuse which pupils in non-Catholic schools were claiming they had suffered.

The discovery that only a tiny fraction of those who were accused of abuse in Ireland and elsewhere were ever convicted in the courts,

Truth - What Is That?

That both the mainstream and the social media were prepared to collude with the State and with this kind of distortion, was confirmed by what happened during the subsequent abortion referendum.

Over a period of a few weeks in the run-up to this referendum in Ireland, the mainstream newspapers ran thirty-three pro-abortion articles and only one pro-life article. This forced the pro-life people to turn to the social media and the internet to get their voices heard. All the while, the high tech companies were blocking referendum adverts with the apparent approval of the State’s pro-abortion political parties who seemed to be quite happy with that kind of outside interference in our national politics and affairs that both the liberal democratic party and the liberal media were deploring in the US.

Sr Clare Crockett – The Biography Anne Keeling

Derry-born Sister Clare Crockett was a young nun captivated by Jesus and captivating to all who knew her. Budding actress turned devout sister she shone more brightly when she donned the habit of the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother than she would have shone on any Hollywood screen or Broadway stage.

Yet these were the alluring trappings that she had to leave behind both spiritually and physically in the aftermath of her conversion on Good Friday of Holy Week 2000 when God called her at the age of 17.

At that time, on a Holy Week retreat to one of the Home of the Mother houses in Spain, she was more tuned in to sun bathing and smoking than praying. Something happened however when she followed everybody as they processed to reverence the cross.

Having kissed the crucifix she received an awareness of the depth of Christ’s love for her and cried tears of recognition.

The Crucifix Kissed By Sister Clare Crockett During Holy Week 2000 This was how it all started. The talented, vivacious girl from wartorn Derry was set on the road to becoming a nun, despite her family’s pleading and her agents’ displeasure. It ended in 2016 when Sister Clare was tragically killed in an earthquake in Ecuador along with five young girls. She was 33.

An engaging documentary film with archival footage called “All or Nothing: Sister Clare Crockett” was made about Sr Clare in 2018, directed by a fellow Servant Sister, Sr Kristen Gardner SHM. Now, this year, Sr Kristen has written a book called “Sister Clare Crockett: Alone with Christ Alone” which is a biography of her life.

As Sr Kristen says in her introduction to the biography: “This book is far from being a complete biography. Only four years have passed since Sr Clare’s death and there are many, many testimonies yet to be gathered. I hope however that it will permit

all those who have heard about her death and watched the documentary “All or Nothing” to get to know her better. Even those who knew her personally will learn a lot about Sr Clare, just as I have.”

Perhaps we could say that every consecrated person’s story is of great interest, and maybe even our own spiritual journeys are of interest if we were to be examined, but Sister Clare’s journey has proved to be of special interest. She holds attraction for those who read about her or see photos or watch videos on YouTube, perhaps giving her testimony or singing with her guitar.

Comments are made by those who see her referring to, for example, how she touches the heart with her beautiful soul, or how she will be canonised one day and be called Saint Clare Crockett. When the biography was released Sr Kristen answered a question from a reader as to whether or not her cause had been opened and explained that it could not be opened until five years have passed.

Purgatory is Based on a Promise of Jesus’ Monsignor Charles Pope

I want to reflect on Purgatory as the necessary result of a promise. Many people think of Purgatory primarily in terms of punishment, but it is also important to consider it in terms of promise, purity, and perfection.

Some of our deceased brethren are having the promises made to them perfected in Purgatory. In the month of November we are especially committed to praying for them and we know by faith that our prayers are of benefit to them.

What is the promise that points to Purgatory?

Simply stated, Jesus made the promise in Matthew 5:48: “You, therefore, must be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect”. In this promise is an astonishing declaration of our dignity. We are to share in the very nature and perfection of God. This is our dignity: we are called to reflect and possess the very glory and perfection of God. St. Catherine of Siena was gifted by the Lord to see a heavenly soul in the state of grace. Her account of it is related in her Dialogue, and is summarised in the Sunday School Teacher’s Explanation of the Baltimore Catechism: The Soul In The State Of Grace St. Catherine of Siena was permitted

by God to see the beauty of a soul in the state of grace. It was so beautiful that she could not look on it; the brightness of that soul dazzled her.

Blessed Raymond, her confessor, asked her to describe to him, as far as she was able, the beauty of the soul she had seen. St. Catherine thought of the sweet light of that morning, and of the beautiful colours of the rainbow, but that soul was far more

She thought of the pure whiteness of the lily and of the fresh snow, but that is only an earthly whiteness. Oh, if you could but see the beauty of a soul in the state of grace, you would sacrifice your life a thousand times for its salvation. I asked the angel who was with me what had made that soul so beautiful, and he answered me, “It is the image and likeness of God in that soul, and the Divine Grace which made it so beautiful.”

today, without the divine perfection you have been promised having been completed? I can only speak for myself and say that if I were to die today, though I am not aware of any mortal sin, I also know that I am not perfect. I am not even close to being humanly perfect, let alone having the perfection of our heavenly Father!

But Jesus made me a promise: You must be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. And the last time I checked, Jesus is a promise keeper!

Yes, this is our dignity and final destiny if we are faithful to God.

St. Paul says, May God who has begun a good work in you bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6).

Hence, if I were to die today, Jesus would need to complete a work that He has begun in me. By God’s grace, I have come a mighty long way. But I also have a long way to go. God is very holy and His perfection is beyond imagining.

So, I ask you, “Are you there yet?”

God has made you a promise. But what if that promise has not yet been fulfilled and you were to die

personality. Likewise most of us carry with us hurts, regrets, sorrows, and disappointments. We cannot take any of this with us to Heaven. If we did, it wouldn’t be Heaven. So the Lord, who is faithful to His promise, will purge all of this from us. The Book of Revelation speaks of Jesus ministering to the dead in that he will wipe every tear from their eyes (Revelation 21:4). 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 speaks of us as passing through fire in order that our works be tested so that what is good may be purified and what is worldly may be burned away. And Job said, But he knows the way that I take; and when he has tested me, I will come forth as pure gold (Job 23:10).

Purgatory has to be — gold, pure gold; refined, perfect, pure gold. Purgatory has to be, if God’s promises are to hold.

Catholic theology has always taken seriously God’s promise that we would actually be perfect as the Father is perfect. The righteousness is Jesus’ righteousness, but it actually transforms us and changes us completely in the way that St. Catherine describes. It is a real righteousness, not merely imputed, not merely declared of us by inference. It is not an alien justice, but a personal justice by the grace of God. Esse quam videri – Purgatory makes sense because the perfection promised to us is real: esse quam videri (to be rather than to seem). We must actually be purged of the last vestiges of imperfection, worldliness, sin, and sorrow.

Having been made perfect by the grace of God, we are able to enter Heaven, of which Scripture says, Nothing impure will ever enter it (Revelation 21:27). And again, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the souls of the just made perfect (Hebrews 12:22-23).

How could it be anything less? Indeed, the souls of the just made perfect. How could it be anything less if Jesus died to accomplish it for us? Purgatory makes sense based on Jesus’ promise and on the power of His blood to accomplish complete and total perfection for us. This is our dignity; this is our destiny. Purgatory is about promises, not mere punishment. There’s an old Gospel hymn that says, “O Lord I’m running, trying to make a hundred. Ninety-nine and a half won’t do!”

That’s right, ninety-nine and a half won’t do. Nothing less than a hundred is possible because we have Jesus’ promise and the wonderful working power of the precious Blood of the Lamb. For most, if not all of us, Purgatory has to be.

No “Good Evidence” To Close Churches, Says Uk’s Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Hayes

The UK’s chief scientific adviser has said scientists working on the pandemic “haven’t got good evidence” to justify imposing the new lockdown measures on places of worship.

Sir Patrick Vallance made the comment at the Science and Technology committee this month when asked by Tory MP Mark Logan what advice the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) gives to the British government “in making decisions where evidence is weak, for example on the closing of places of worship?”

Vallance replied, “you’re right we haven’t got good evidence on the exact value of each intervention on R. We produced a paper suggesting

what that might be in different areas but really said look this is not a very exact science at all.”

Scientists, he said, views the measures as “a package” that would combine to reduce the reproduction rate of Covid-19.

“You had to think of this as a series of things that interrupt individual activities, but also as a whole, will have an effect on contact and interaction,” he claimed.

“And the danger in trying to then pick apart each one, and when you get down to the ones towards the lower level, where you might say, well, this doesn’t make much of an impact on its own, is that you keep cutting things off, and then you end

up with a suboptimal package that doesn’t get R below one.”

When asked how much transmission is estimated to take place in places of worship, Vallance said they had no “good data to answer with any degree of certainty”, whilst his counterpart, UK Chief Medical Officer Prof. Chris Whitty expressed fear that groups congregating outside places of worship would pose a greater risk.

Meanwhile, former prime minister Theresa May MP told the UK parliament that restrictions on public worship by a government with “the best of intentions sets a precedent that could be misused for a government in the future with the worst of intentions.”

Announcing The Latest Books From Lumen Fidei Press The purpose of this book is to help people to complete the devotion of the Five First Saturdays of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary which was given to the Catholic Church by Our Lady of Fatima.

One part of the Five First Saturday Devotion, perhaps the part where most people fail, consists in accompanying Our Lady for fifteen minutes whilst meditating on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. One can meditate on one or on several mysteries of the Rosary for that time.

This book is a collection of Rosary meditations composed by the celebrated French Dominican, Father JacquesMarie-Louis Monsabré, which were translated into English in 1885. Although these were composed before Our Lady visited Fatima, they are perfectly suitable for use with the Five First Saturdays Devotion of Reparation.

The importance of the Five First Saturdays Devotion cannot be over emphasised, Our Lady specifically came from Heaven to Fatima to ask Catholics to honour her in this way.
