ANNUAL REPORT | FY 2020
Father of Mercy, Through your generosity, you gave us what is most precious, Your beloved Son, Jesus. Thank you for your gift of life and for loving each of us into being. As loving disciples of Jesus, we lead lives that strive to make a difference in the world. Where there is hatred, we live love; where there is despair, we enliven hope; where there is doubt, we share our faith. You call us to be good stewards of your blessings and unselfish caretakers of the mission you have entrusted to us here at USC. May our faithful and generous hearts bear witness to the love of Christ, your Son, leaving no member of our Catholic Trojan family in doubt of your goodness or mercy. We ask this in the name and love of your Son, Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
Mission Statement:
OUR VISION IS TO INVITE THE USC COMMUNITY INTO A TRANSFORMING RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND ONE ANOTHER, EMPOWERED TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE WORLD. *Disclaimer: Care was taken to ensure the accuracy of the information in this report, but we recognize that mistakes do occur. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ADVISORY BOARD
On behalf of Fr. Richard Sunwoo and our entire Advisory Board, we are most grateful for your continued generosity to USC Caruso Catholic Center over the past year. I am overwhelmed by the unquestionable strength of our community. So much has changed in such a short time–the world around us, our neighborhoods, gathering spaces and even where we work, but your steadfast commitment has allowed us to continue our mission at the most critical time when our communities need us most. We rely on the support of our families, friends, and alumni to provide funding so that we may continue our mission to celebrate Mass and offer student programs to our Catholic Trojan community at the University of Southern California. I cannot think of a more important time for our faith to be present and your sacrifice allows us to continue our critical work. We carried our theme of “Take Courage, it is I, Do not be afraid” from Matthew’s Gospel throughout the school year. This message of hope and unwavering faith was internalized by our students, staff, leadership, and our entire Catholic community and is still ever-present as we face the challenges before us. Due to the shutdown in March, our ministry pivoted to an entirely online platform. We celebrated Mass on Zoom, Bible studies met online, and our students led several panel discussions on Facebook Live that addressed racial injustices along with plagues and pandemics. While the online platform provided cost savings, unfortunately, it was at the expense of having to cancel retreats, Alternative Spring Break trips, and our Baccalaureate Mass. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize our 2020 Trojan Saint Honoree and fellow Advisory Board member Kevin A. Shannon. Kevin helped us secure over $1.3M from his friends, family, and colleagues at the virtual 2020 Trojan Saint Award and helped us close our fiscal year with a surplus. As we look ahead to our year, we remain committed to enhancing the spiritual lives of our students while remaining a national leader in campus ministry. I ask for your prayerful consideration for financial support to help us continue to form the next generation of Catholic Trojan leaders. I realize that given the current circumstances, it may be challenging for many of us with the uncertainty that lies before us. However, as a 100% donor-funded community, we simply cannot survive without the participation of our entire Catholic Trojan Family. From the bottom of my heart, I am greatly humbled and honored by your selfless generosity and commitment to our students.
God bless and Fight On! Rick Caruso Advisory Board Chair

2019–2020 Annual Report
IT IS I! DO NOT BE AFRAID.
TAKE COURAGE!
“ I believe that it was God’s plan for us to take courage, to keep our eyes focused on Him, and to do what most people think is impossible - ministry during this pandemic. It’s by God’s divine providence that He continues to lead us.” - Fr. Richard Sunwoo Students Fight On! during a virtual meeting for The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) as they continue their journey toward entering the full joy of Eucharistic participation, March 2020.
“The friends I’ve met at the Catholic Center have been so fruitful in my life. They’re the friends who are always supportive, loving, willing to listen - men and women of faith. These friendships have helped to shape me.” - Carlo S. ’21
Trojan Catholic Response to Covid-19 With God’s providence and the guidance of courageous leadership, Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center is strongly positioned to flow with these challenging circumstances of the pandemic. We reflect on this past year and celebrate what the Lord has done at USC. As you read through this report may joy and thanksgiving well up within your soul for what our gracious Father has done in and through each of us in this Trojan Family. Let’s pray together that His will be done, and His Love be known immeasurably more by our students for the upcoming year.

Our New Donor Wall!
C A M PA I G N U P D AT E
Four years ago, we embarked on a campaign with two goals: strengthen our annual giving and grow our endowment. Over 1,800 donors have given to the Campaign for USC Caruso Catholic Center and Our Savior Parish helping us to raise over $16.3M in operating support and adding nearly $4.3M to our endowment. Unlike traditional parishes, our in-pew offertory is roughly $600 each week, mostly from students, which is not enough to support our $3M operating budget. We also do not receive financial support from USC or the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The reality is that nearly 80% of our income is from the generosity of alumni, parents, friends, and foundations which vary in amount each year. This is not sustainable for long-term success nor sufficient to accommodate our increased growth. Thus, it is imperative that this campaign be a success to ensure that every student who seeks our community can find it and call it home! All gifts or pledges of $15,000 or more to the campaign will be recognized on our donor wall located in the lobby of USC Caruso Catholic Center. The donor wall was inspired by our pastor Fr. Richard Sunwoo and designed by Judson Studios, who also commissioned the stained glass windows in Our Savior Parish.

“ The Catholic Center is a home for me. It’s a home because of the people there that I can check in with. It’s where my faith grows, and for me faith is one of the biggest parts of who I am.” - Isabel T. ’21 Small Group Bible Study meets regularly online, May 2020.
The Catholic Trojan Family worships together from different parts of the world during Zoom Mass, May 2020.
A student receives the Eucharist, August 2020. For many members in our community, attendance during in-person Mass at the start of the school year provided an opportunity to receive Holy Communion for the first time in months.
“ The Caruso Catholic Center is a place where everyone knows you by name and everyone wants to better know your story. It’s a place to seek guidance, wisdom and truth, but most importantly it’s a place that we come together to worship our God–whether that be through our music, our prayers, or retreats, and participating in the life of the Sacraments. What this place does best is facilitate encounters with our Lord, Jesus Christ.” - Nick S. ’20
