Our vision is to invite the USC community into a transforming relationship with Christ and one another, empowered to make a lasting impact on the world. Care was taken to ensure the accuracy of the information in this report, but we recognize that mistakes do occur. If you were a donor in 2017-2018, and your name was inadvertently misspelled, omitted, or listed in the wrong place, please forgive us and contact Xochitl Nisbet at 213.516.3959 so that we can correct our records.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

On behalf of the Advisory Board, our Pastor, Fr. Richard Sunwoo, and President Jamie Cappetta, I am excited to share with you the inaugural Annual Report for the USC Caruso Catholic Center. Now in our sixth year, Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center have become an important spiritual presence on our campus. We now serve more than 1,500 students each week and are recognized as one of the top campus ministries in the country. This dynamic growth would not have been possible without the support of our Catholic Trojan Family. This 2018 Annual Report is an opportunity to express our gratitude for your generosity and to share the positive impact it has made on the lives of our students. As you read the pages that follow, I hope you will be proud to see how your contributions have enabled our students to find authentic friendships, enrich their faith, and share in their greater desire to help those in need. As the center expands in its development of thoughtful leaders for our Church and for the world, these contributions will continue to play a critical role in our growth and it is our pledge to remain good stewards of these resources. In these times of transition both in the Church and at USC, we value the trust you have placed in us. On behalf of all the students and members of the Trojan community that we serve, we remain grateful for your commitment and thank you for your continued support.

Rick J. Caruso Chairman of the Board

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR AND PRESIDENT

Our Catholic community at USC is vibrant with life, interest, and activity! What truly makes our community great are our faithful students and their desire to deepen their relationship with God. They are faithful and imperfect, engaging their faith with honesty and vulnerability. We are grateful for the opportunity to extend Christ’s love to all who consider us a home away from home. Within the last year, weekly church attendance grew by 10% with an average of 566 students worshiping at Mass every Sunday. As we continue to enlarge our reach, it is our goal that even though we may grow numerically, we are committed to every ONE to discover their value, their purpose in God’s plan, and a home in the Church. We are thankful for the health and growth of our ministry in 2018, with more students encountering Christ and transforming their hearts through participation in the sacraments, devotions, and works of service. The growth is also reflected in the financial results. The 2018 Annual Report is a reflection of our commitment to playing our part in seeing generations of Trojans finding hope in the message of Jesus Christ.

Empowering us to respond to God’s grace are your spiritual and financial gifts. We are fully donor funded and every dollar given to advance Christ’s mission is counted as a gift to USC! Your support for us is directly correlated to our ability to minister to our students and our growth over this past year. We’d like to thank the members of our Advisory Board for their continued leadership and service. Their efforts ensure that Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center remain healthy and committed to good governance. We are forever thankful for YOU— our alumni, donors, and friends— whose belief in our mission means that our ministry to build God’s Kingdom here at USC continues to advance in strength.

Locations have changed, pastors have come and gone, and generations of Trojans have attended Holy Mass and graduated. Today, Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center (OSP CCC) serves a universitywide community of 10,000 Catholic students, one of the largest west of the Mississippi. We moved into our new church and building on December 9, 2012. From the very outset of establishing this Catholic community, being a Home for Catholic Trojans has been at the core of who we are. As part of the many layers of building a healthy church community, OSP CCC has a strong desire to communicate clearly that all are welcome. Our message of Welcome Home is not simply marketing verbiage, but a heartfelt greeting to all who enter through our doors.

I

would like to share with you my thoughts on our just completed June 30, 2018 fiscal year on the following for the USC Caruso Catholic Center (CCC): (1) the operating numbers, (2) the impact of the proposed Campaign for the USC Caruso Center (the “Campaign”), (3) outstanding loans, (4) investment performance, (5) balance sheet numbers and, lastly, (6) our 2019 budget.

Clearly 2018 was a good year; however, when you look at the Sources of Cash, 75% comes from current fundraising. This high percentage has been true for several years and the last dollars needed have been met by hard work, surprise gifts, and unexpected bequests. To some extent, the CCC is becoming the victim of its own success— attracting more students to the highest quality ministry/events means more people to provide these services hence the largest single expense item, salaries and benefits. 2018 OPERATING NUMBERS. We generated $3M of operating cash and spent $2.9M, leaving an operations surplus of $100K. THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE USC CARUSO CATHOLIC CENTER. The current costs of the Campaign were offset by a gift so there was no current impact on 2018’s overall cash flow. OUTSTANDING LOANS. As of this date, we have two outstanding loans owed to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA) and USC. During the 2018 fiscal year, principal and interest were paid to the

ADLA, reducing the loan to $575K. It also has been agreed that the CCC would pay USC $750K for the “USC Parking Obligation.” The Advisory Board is actively discussing with both the ADLA and USC long term solutions to both of these obligations. INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE. Fiscal Year 2018 was very good to the CCC as its funds held by the ADLA in their investment pool (mostly endowment funds) returned close to 10% and in excess of $1M. BALANCE SHEET NUMBERS. For Fiscal Year 2018, we had $1.7M in our bank accounts, $12.3M in our ADLA endowment accounts, $800K of liabilities (USC Parking obligation not included), and $13.2M of equity. 2019 OPERATING BUDGET. For Fiscal Year 2019, the Operating Budget shows total income of $2.7M and expenses of $3M for a deficit of ($316K). The actual numbers for 2018 were $3.0M and $2.9M. Revenue has been conservatively projected to reflect there will be no Trojan Saint Dinner this fiscal year and, with the Campaign expected to commence this year, that it will impact our annual revenue. Expenses are in line with last year’s actuals.
