Altar Server Ministry: Faithfully Sharing Talents with Our Lord and Parish
The sacrifice at the altar is the most important part of the Mass, with the Eucharist at the center of our Catholic faith. Since the Mass is of the utmost importance, altar servers play a crucial role. All ministries are important, but this ministry is notable in that our youth assist at the altar, serving the Lord and our parish, and youth show reverence and respect for the Mass.
L.E. Allen has been serving for as long as she can remember. Currently a senior in high school, L.E. has followed in her older brothers’ footsteps as both were altar servers. Her younger sister, Frances, is also a server.

“My favorite memory of serving is when me, my brothers and my sister all served together before my brothers retired from the ministry,” L.E says.
L.E. has wrapped up her service at the altar, as she graduates this spring. For her next step, she plans to join the military. She values her many years serving on the altar, much of the time at the Sunday 7:30 a.m. Mass.
“When I am serving, I feel closer to God,” she says. “It helps keep me focused on Him as I assist the priest.”
In addition, L.E. has had the privilege of serving Mass for several weddings — she appreciated the opportunity. She also appreciates having the chance to get to know the priests and other ministry members, including the sacristans. Through all her years of serving, she has learned more about the Mass. “We have the chance to talk in the sacristy before Mass,” L.E. says. “It’s been cool to learn more about people’s lives outside the church.” In turn, L.E. offers other young people encouragement to get involved as altar servers. “It’s a good way to learn more about the Mass,” she says. “As altar servers get older, they can become an usher, lector, or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. It’s that first step.” In her free time, L.E. enjoys listening to music, rollerblading, and spending time with friends. She is also a member of the Raiders club and serves as a junior mentor for middle school students.
