he Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented towards it (paragraph 1324).” While many of us were already familiar with this description of the Eucharist as the “source and summit” of our Catholic faith, we have now experienced this truth for ourselves — on a deep and personal level. Because we have all gone through a season away from Mass due to the coronavirus, we have all felt the profound deprivation of life without the privilege of sacramental Communion. Perhaps we can now see that in this deprivation our all-loving God was offering us a precious, though painful gift, one that we are only beginning to unwrap — the profound realization that the Eucharist truly is the source and summit of our life. Yes, absence truly does make the heart grow fonder. Don’t our hearts now burn with new love and longing for this Sacrament of Love? Don’t we realize now, as never before, what a treasure we have in all the sacraments of the Church, in the fellowship of our parish family, in the simple acts of service we can offer to each other? We know now because we have experienced it for ourselves, that the Eucharist truly is Our Love and Our Life. At St. Mary on the Hill, we have embraced stewardship as a way of life for our parish family. Because the Eucharist is at the center of our Faith, it is also at the center of our stewardship way of life. As we enter into this time of Renewal in the wake of such a challenging time, we can never be quite the same. We have all been affected in some form or fashion by the pandemic. So, let us put the hardfought lessons we have learned to great use. And let us focus with new intensity on the Eucharist as our love and our life, offering our gratitude to the Giver of this priceless Gift with concrete commitments of Time, Talent, and Treasure. 4
Stewardship of T ime “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.” (John 6: 55-57) Just as our bodies need healthy physical nourishment to survive and thrive, our spiritual lives also require nourishment. We are called to use the gift of time above all to nourish our souls. We must take an honest look at ourselves. Do we put our spiritual life first or do we focus more on the cares of the world or escape from those cares? Do we use our time to obtain the lasting “food” of good spiritual nourishment that Christ and the Church offer to us? When we commit time each day to seeking spiritual food, our loving and generous Father will transform our lives. How will you commit to using your time in the year ahead so that God can truly feed you?
Consider these ideas to help you get started: Plan to attend one extra Mass each week or make a mid-week visit to Jesus in the Tabernacle.
Prepare yourself for Sunday Mass by reflecting ahead of time as a
family on the lectionary readings that will be proclaimed. Even five or ten minutes will change you!
Commit to saying grace before meals and have every family member mention one way they were “fed” by God that day.
Every night before bed, pray slowly and lovingly the prayer that Jesus himself taught us, the “Our Father.”

Stewardship of T alent We have heard these words of dismissal at the end of Mass so many times —“The Mass is ended, go in peace to love and serve the Lord,” but have we truly taken them to heart? If the Eucharist is indeed our Love and our Life, then it must touch everything that we do when we leave the Church at the end of Mass. We have been filled up by Love itself, now, in gratitude, we must pour out our lives for others. We must serve Him who has loved us so well by serving others with the talents He has given us.
Pray about the following possibilities: We have all now, to some degree, experienced what life is like for our homebound parish family members. Perhaps join a ministry dedicated to serving their needs.
We have gone without the beauty of attending Mass in person. Consider serving in a ministry that makes our Church or our liturgies more beautiful and welcoming.
Commit to a daily extra act of service toward a family member as a concrete way to serve the Lord.
If you remain homebound, we value and need your talents! Consider ways you can serve right from home — helping with phone calls or emails for a ministry or offering skills like sewing or baking for parish events. There are countless ways to serve God’s kingdom.

Stewardship of Treasure “From the very beginning Christians have brought, along with the bread and wine for the Eucharist, gifts to share with those in need. The custom of the collection, ever appropriate, is inspired by the example of Christ who became poor to make us rich” (CCC paragraph 1351). For the true steward, money has a spiritual component. When used according to God’s will, our income becomes a sort of prayer — which demonstrates our love and gratitude to God, and our real trust in His plan for our lives. Our spending habits are also a reflection of who and what we truly love. God asks us to love Him above all else. Do we?
Try challenging yourself in the following ways this year: Take a look at your current spending habits, and assess what
expenses are preventing you from offering your treasure more selflessly.
Ask yourself if your family budget reflects what you most love in this life so that your spending is a reflection of that love.
Commit to giving a percentage of your income to God through
the parish offertory as an expression of your love for the God Who withholds nothing of Himself from us.

Parish Mission Statement: St. Mary on the Hill Parish, a Catholic community, is committed to caring for God’s people through stewardship. Parish Membership: As a stewardship parish, we answer the call to discipleship by making a commitment of time, talent and treasure. Our offertory funds the needs of the parish and service ministries, including St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School. To reach these goals, we ask that you strive to commit eight percent of your family income to your stewardship of treasure in thanksgiving for all the gifts that you have received. Working together, we provide an enriched parish life and programs to care for those in need. Our commitment is to each other and to Christ.
An active parishioner meets the following criteria: Is a registered active member of the parish for at least one year, attends Sunday and Holy Day Masses regularly, has a Stewardship commitment card on file at the church each year, pledging their time, talent, and treasure and honors those commitments, uses church envelopes weekly indicating regular Mass attendance. ADORATION
Give your week a boost. Come visit Jesus for an hour of quiet time for prayer and reflection. Tell Him how your week is going, thank Him for His grace and guidance, praise Him for His many blessings, pray for a family member or friend, for patience for yourself, or sit quietly and adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus is there ready to help if you ask. Commit to a day and hour each week. You do not need a sub if you cannot attend your hour or register to be a visitor and come often. ALTAR SERVER
Altar servers (fifth grade and older) minister through serving at Mass and providing an example of service, devotion and humility. They assist the priest and other ministers at the altar. ALTAR SOCIETY

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
During the Liturgy of the Word, children gather in a separate room to hear an age-appropriate proclamation of the Scriptures and to participate in an interactive homily. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION Eucharistic Ministers distribute Holy Communion at Mass and also take Holy Communion to the sick and homebound of the community. LECTORS
“The lector is entrusted with the crucial task of making the Word of God come alive by proclaiming it for the Christian assembly” (Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers). Our parish lectors proclaim the Word of God at weekend and Holy Day liturgies. Lectors are high school age and older, and are trained before they begin their ministry. CANTOR MINISTRY
Meets year-round. Rehearsals: By appointment if needed. Vocalists are needed to lead the congregation in song at every Mass. Primary duties of cantors include singing the Psalm, Gospel Acclamation, and other sung Mass parts. Cantors are trained by the Music Director, and scheduling is flexible both for practice and Masses. No experience is required.
PARISH CHOIR
Rehearsals: Wednesdays, 7–8 p.m. The Parish Choir is the anchor and oldest musical group at St. Mary on the Hill. It is an adult mixed chorus (men and women) and sings for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. The Parish Choir is open to ALL, and we encourage participation even if you have never sung in a choir. Important choir skills are learned as you go, with help from the Music Director and choir members. 12
RESURRECTION CHOIR
Meets year-round. Rehearsals: None The Resurrection Choir Ministry gathers to sing for any of the funeral Masses which take place at St. Mary on the Hill. Membership is open to ALL, regardless of experience, and participation is flexible. Members of the Resurrection Choir are notified by the Music Director of upcoming funerals via email. The Resurrection Choir meets just prior to funeral services for instruction and then proceeds to sing for Mass. This is a very valuable ministry as an extension of our consolation and care for grieving families in our community.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC MINISTRY
The St. Mary’s Contemporary Music Ministry welcomes youth (high school and up) and adults alike to lend their voices and other musical abilities (guitar, piano, violin, etc.) to this ministry. The Contemporary Music Ministry provides music for the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Sundays and sings at several other liturgies throughout the year. Please email for rehearsal times and additional information. SACRISTANS

USHERS
Ushers’ friendly greetings help set a welcoming impression as parishioners and guests enter our beautiful church. They assist with seating, as necessary, and with queuing during Communion. Ushers also tend to the collection for each Mass and ensure that bulletins are accessible. Visitors look for ushers to answer any questions they may have about St. Mary’s. CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

CCD SUNDAY MORNING RELIGIOUS FORMATION
CCD is the religious formation program for parish elementary and middle school students who attend non-Catholic schools. Catechists are dedicated to helping students understand their faith, prepare them for the sacraments, and to become active members of the parish community. PARISH PARTNERSHIP ON DISABILITY
As a faith community, we must strive to be a welcoming community to all people. The ministry focuses on areas such as the accessibility of the church 14
campus, assessing/responding to the needs of parishioners who have differing abilities, developing/providing educational information about various disabilities, and developing strategies to link parishioners who need assistance in getting to Mass and other church functions with possible transportation resources. RETROUVAILLE
Retrouvaille (Rediscovery) offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Retrouvaille is a live-in weekend and post-weekend program for married couples. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
The RCIA process functions to educate adults about the Catholic faith and prepare them to enter the Catholic Church if they so desire. Weekly sessions are held September through Easter. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)
VBS offers a fun and exciting program to bring the youth close to Jesus through a weeklong, half-day summer program. YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY OF AUGUSTA — SPIRIT & TRUTH
Spirit & Truth ministers to the young adult population for the Catholic parishes in the Augusta Deanery. This Catholic ministry seeks to bring young Christians into contact with Christ and His Church through faith, fellowship and spiritual growth. We meet weekly, hosting guest speakers for a variety of faith-based discussions, as well as faithbased videos and other fun activities. YOUTH MINISTRY
The St. Mary Youth Ministry is for area middle and high school students interested in coming together to grow in their love for Christ through prayer, works of mercy, social interaction and meaningful participation in the life of the Church and community. This program includes faithsharing groups, social events, retreats, missions, trips and works of mercy opportunities geared toward families and teens. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH (GRADES 9-12)
High School Youth meet once a week during the school year for weekly small groups. We also do multiple trips as a group each year, such as our annual Ski for Life trip, mission trip to Charlotte, N.C., and a summer youth conference! APRON MINISTRY
The Apron Ministry operates under the umbrella of the Consolation Ministry. After a request is made for the services of the Apron Ministry, a team is assembled to assist with the “gathering” or reception, usually held in the home after the funeral. Apron ministers arrange all preparations, serve the food and clean up. Blue aprons clearly designate these ministers. BEREAVEMENT BASKET
The Bereavement Basket Ministry provides support to our brothers and sisters in Christ during their time of mourning. A group of volunteers rotate weekly, and are “on call” to deliver the Bereavement Baskets to the families with funerals at St. Mary’s. The baskets are filled with breakfast items (cereals, coffee, juices, fresh fruit, etc.) and provide breakfast for the morning of the funeral. Parish Organization The Parish Council shall assist the parish pastor by deliberating and acting on matters pertaining to the spiritual, financial and educational affairs of the parish, its management and operation, except in those matters explicitly limited by Church law. The Parish Council shall work with the parish staff and concern itself with all aspects of parish life including, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the following areas: social, liturgical and apostolic programs; evolvement of the long-range and immediate goals of the parish; the Christian formation of the parishioners (including formation as Stewardship parish); and involvement of the entire parish in the conduct of parish affairs. In its work, the Parish Council shall be guided by the following principal objectives: the fostering of parish unity; the development and implementation of a unified program of renewal designed to promote the common good of the parish; the formation of the parish as a Stewardship parish; the coordination of all parish activities; the provision of adequate forums for dialogues among all members of the parish and between parish members in the spiritual and apostolic life; the promotion of diocesan and deanery activities and programs; and the assessment of the spiritual and temporal needs of the parish.

A staff member is assigned to work with the Parish Council. Staff should be kept informed of the actions of the Parish Council and ministries, and may participate in Parish Council meetings as consultants and resource people. They should keep the Parish Council abreast of significant events within the diocese and deanery. CONFIRMATION
The Sacrament of Confirmation is usually celebrated in the fall of a student’s ninth-grade year. The person preparing for Confirmation must be baptized, and have received First Eucharist. A student must have completed a Religious Education class and the family must be attending Sunday Mass regularly. A letter to the bishop is required and Confirmation candidates are required to attend Confirmation Preparation sessions, and attend a retreat. MARRIAGE
You are asked to contact a priest at least four to six months in advance before setting your wedding date. All couples are required to attend a Marriage Preparation Weekend and meet with the parish wedding coordinator. Marriage Preparation Weekends are offered four times a year in the Augusta Deanery. ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Please contact the church office when a loved one is in the hospital or seriously ill, so a priest may visit as soon as possible. We invite all seriously ill parishioners to ask a priest to anoint them and pray for healing. You may want to include the Anointing of the Sick as part of your pre-surgery preparations.

Call the Church Office, 706-733-6627, several weeks in advance if you wish to donate flowers for the altar in honor of an anniversary, birthday or in memory of a loved one.
BULLETIN
The bulletin is published weekly. The deadline is Monday at 12 noon to submit information to appear in the following Sunday bulletin. Your written information can be sent to the church office via mail, fax or email at smbulletin@stmaryonthehill.org. Rest in Peace announcements are published in the bulletin the week following a death. We normally only list registered family members with the deceased. Prayer Request names are listed in the bulletin upon request for two weeks. If you wish your name or the name of a loved one to remain on the list after two weeks, please contact the Church Office (706-733-6627). Please check with the person before calling to add their name to the Prayer Request list. If you have a loved one on the prayer list, please call the office when their name can be removed.
CATHOLIC READING RACK
The Catholic Reading Rack in the narthex of the church has a wide selection of Catholic periodicals and Bible study guides. Envelopes are located on the reading rack for a donation which can be put in the next week’s collection.
CHURCH NURSERY
A nursery is provided during the Sunday 10:30 a.m. Mass in St. Anne’s Hall. It is available for children ages 6 months to Pre-K4. Parents who use the Church Nursery are asked to volunteer. 34
COLUMBARIUM
St. Mary on the Hill dedicated our columbarium on July 25, 2017. A columbarium is a structure similar to a mausoleum, except for cremains. The cremains are inurned into a niche. St. Mary’s columbarium has 408 double niches and 117 single niches. GIFT BEARERS
Individuals or families are invited to bring the offertory gifts to the altar during Mass. Please notify an usher prior to the Mass that you wish to bear the gifts.
HOMEBOUND
If there are parishioners who are homebound, in a nursing facility, or in the hospital and who wish for pastoral visits and Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office by calling 706-733-6627. We rely on family members to notify us if there are parishioners to be visited. Due to the federal confidentiality guidelines for hospitals, we are not notified when 35
parishioners are in the hospital. Therefore, we ask that you please call us if you would like a visit while in the hospital. If you anticipate a stay in the hospital, please let us know so we can keep you in our prayers.

The Marianite newsletter is published bi-monthly and is mailed to parishioners. It includes information about people, activities and events in the parish and community. MASS CARDS
Mass Cards are available through the Church Office. Please come in person, or send your request in writing. The customary stipend is $10 or more per Mass. Masses for the next year are available after Pentecost Sunday.

MOTHER’S DAY OUT/PRE-SCHOOL
Our Mother’s Day Out and Pre-School program is available for children ages 6 weeks through the start of kindergarten. Complete an online Re-Certification Module on VIRTUS assigned by the parish/school 2. Attend another Protecting God’s Children training session • For certain roles, employees/volunteers must read a VIRTUS Monthly Training Bulletin. Background Check • All employees/volunteers must have a background check on file with the parish. Code of Conduct • The Code of Conduct must be understood and acknowledged by the employee/volunteer signature, either physical or electronic. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
In thanksgiving for God’s gifts, each household at St. Mary Church is asked to strive to give 10 percent of their income based on the biblical tithe — eight percent to St. Mary on the Hill Church, one percent to the Diocese of Savannah, and one percent to a charity. Contribution envelopes are mailed to your home address on a bi-monthly basis. Please use your envelope when you attend church, regardless if there is a contribution in the envelope. If you make a contribution without your envelope, please include your envelope number on your check or use a blank envelope and your full name. Contributions are entered for the week they are received; therefore, it is not necessary to include the envelopes for the Sundays that you may have missed. Contribution statements are mailed quarterly and end-ofthe-year statements are provided for tax purposes. If you find an error in any of your statements, please notify the Church Office. Please remember to inform the Church Office of any address change as your envelopes are mailed bulk rate and are not usually forwarded by the post office. The school is located at 1220 Monte Sano Ave. It is an elementary school K-8th grade. The CCD program is held at the school on Sunday mornings.

The Gym is located behind St. Mary School on Arsenal Ave. The Gym is available for use by parishioners for parish-related activities.
ST. JOSEPH CENTER
This facility is located at the corner of Monte Sano Ave. and Bellevue Ave. It holds the Senior Center, the Media Center and school classrooms.
