ne day, back in the early 1970s, St. Isidore parishioner Maureen Guth was driving home from work when she heard on the radio that people were working to pass legislation that would legalize abortion in the United States. Deeply disturbed by this news, Maureen rushed home to discuss the matter with her husband, John, who at that time was studying law. “I just couldn’t believe they would try to legalize such a thing, and I went home to discuss it,” says Maureen, a member of our parish's Right to Life Ministry. “But my husband went on to say, ‘Maureen, you know I wouldn’t want you or our girls to have an abortion, and I know we’re Catholic, but I just don’t know. Maybe a woman should have the right to choose.’ Well, we went on to have the biggest fight of our then-short marriage. And after that experience, I sort of just stuffed it. We wouldn’t bring up the topic. I struggled continued on page 10

A Letter From Our Pastor

THE OPPORTUNITY Dear Parishioners,

he other day I was talking with a parishioner and I shared a favorite story from my childhood, Tomie dePaola’s The Legend of Old Befana. In this Italian folktale, the Magi are passing through Befana’s town, and they disclose that they are on their way to find the Christchild. They invite Befana to join them, but she dismisses them because of her tasks and activities that keep her busy. After they depart, Old Befana realizes what a mistake she’s made, and sets out after them to find the newborn king. Having missed her opportunity, however, she wanders futilely, finding neither the Magi nor the child Immanuel. You’ll have to read the story to hear what becomes of Old Befana, but I recounted the story the other day because, as the parishioner and I were talking, we were looking at how opportunities can come in a moment, unexpectedly, but if we let them pass us by, they can be lost to us. One of the things I love about this month’s newsletter is as you read about parishioners here at St. Isidore’s — Maureen Guth, Peggy Steel and Maria Martinez, glimpses of God’s work here in the parish — you encounter the stories of parishioners who have heard the invitation of God, have caught a glimpse of this opportunity, and have responded. To be Catholic is to believe that you are not here by accident — to believe God created you for a reason, that there’s a purpose to your being here. We believe, we profess that God is extending to you an opportunity, and you don’t want to miss it. The testimonies of our brothers and sisters here and

beyond can provide a glimpse into the opportunity being presented to us: we have Magi passing through our lives and inviting us to join them on the adventure of a lifetime. Opportunity and responsibility: if God has created you for a mission, this opportunity is your responsibility to fulfill. You do not want to arrive at the finish line of your life and discover you have failed in the very reason why you were placed on this earth. The Church gives us a vocabulary for this extraordinary gift and role we’ve received. Recognizing we have a responsibility to God and to each other, we call this discipleship, mission, stewardship. Stewardship specifically means you’ve been entrusted with specific gifts and abilities, resources and opportunities, and you alone are responsible for ensuring they are used to the best of their ability. At the end of Spielberg’s evocative film Schindler’s List, even as Schindler has saved the lives of countless vulnerable Polish Jews, he sees that he could have done more: he had an opportunity, and when the window closed, his one wish was to have done more. God has sent the Magi to pass by, to call us to greet the newborn king. Here at St. Isidore Parish, we can be the ones ready to respond to God’s gift and opportunity. Sincerely yours in Christ,

LA OPORTUNIDAD Queridos feligreses,

l otro día estaba hablando con un feligrés y le conté una historia favorita de mi infancia, La leyenda de la Vieja Befana de Tomie dePaola. En este cuento popular Italiano, los Magos pasan por la ciudad de Befana y revelan que están en camino para encontrar al Niño Jesús. Invitan a Befana a unirse a ellos, pero ella los rechaza debido a sus tareas y actividades que la mantienen ocupada. Después de que se van, la vieja Befana se da cuenta del error que ha cometido y sale tras ellos para encontrar al rey recién nacido. Sin embargo, habiendo perdido su oportunidad, vaga inútilmente, sin encontrar ni a los magos ni al niño Emmanuel. Tendrán que leer la historia para saber qué pasa con la vieja Befana, pero conté la historia el otro día porque mientras el feligrés y yo estábamos hablando, estábamos viendo cómo las oportunidades pueden llegar en un momento, inesperadamente, pero si lo dejamos pasar, puede perderse esa oportunidad para nosotros. Creemos, profesamos, que Dios te está brindando una oportunidad y no quieres perderla. Los testimonios de nuestros hermanos y hermanas aquí y más allá pueden dar una idea de la oportunidad

que se nos presenta: tenemos Magos que pasan por nuestras vidas y nos invitan a unirnos a ellos para la aventura de nuestra vida. Oportunidad y responsabilidad: si Dios te ha creado para una misión, esta oportunidad es tu responsabilidad para cumplir esa misión. No quieres llegar a la meta final de tu vida y descubrir que has fallado por la misma razón por la que estuviste en esta tierra. La Iglesia nos da un vocabulario para este extraordinario don y papel que hemos recibido. Reconociendo que tenemos una responsabilidad con Dios y con los demás, la llamamos discipulado, misión, entrega. La entrega significa específicamente que se te ha confiado dones y habilidades, recursos y oportunidades específicas, y solo tu eres responsable de garantizar que se utilicen de la mejor manera posible. Meet Parishioner Peggy Steel

aith and family — for St. Isidore parishioner Peggy Steel, these are the two pillars that have gotten her through the ups and downs of life. Born into a typical Catholic family, Peggy was blessed to have an aunt who was a Notre Dame nun. Anxious to ensure that her niece was properly prepared for her sacraments, she convinced Peggy’s mother to send her to Notre Dame Belmont for a month or two as Peggy prepared for her First Communion and Confirmation. “I was so impressed by that experience that I begged my parents to permanently send me to Catholic school,” Peggy says. “So, I began attending Catholic school my eighth grade year in Marysville.” This educational experience had a profound influence on Peggy’s life, laying a firm foundation on which she would rely for years to come, particularly as a wife and mother. Peggy met her husband, Robert, as a young college student on New Year’s Eve 1946. “It’s really a good story,” Peggy says. “I had no date for New Year’s Eve and his mother phoned me that day and said he was home from college. He had been in the service and was in need of a date, so his mother asked if I would go with him. As I used to tell my girls, no self-respecting woman would have said ‘yes’ — but I did and the following November, we were man and wife.” Robert and Peggy would go on to have 10 children together, a new and exciting experience for Peggy who was an only child. They moved to Yuba City and became founding parishioners at St. Isidore Catholic Church. “I think it was 1955 when the parish first started in Yuba City,” Peggy says. “That was much closer to where we lived, so we started going there. We knew the founding pastor quite well and later moved our children from public to St. Isidore School.” Like most young mothers, Peggy would go on to become very involved in the school. She was an active part of what was then called the Mothers Club and worked hard to help raise funds for

As the mother of 10, time was always limited — yet, Peggy did her best to pitch in and help whenever possible. “Of course, I didn’t have a whole lot of time to do many things, but I helped where I could,” Peggy says. “I was president of the Mothers Club at one point, like so many others, and we always attended Mass faithfully as a family and did our best to make faith part of our life. My husband was a great support in that — just one of those people you can always count on and lean on.” Now a widow and empty-nester, Peggy continues to be involved and live out her faith. She attends daily Mass whenever possible, describing the Eucharist as her great comfort in life, and is an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. “I just heard that they needed somebody and decided that was something I could help with,” Peggy says. “I love meeting the people — seeing how some of them are living with these really tough needs — and being able to help them.” Peggy says she is deeply grateful for the gifts of her family and her faith. They are what keep her going, especially since Robert’s passing over 20 years ago. “I love my parish and I think it’s especially good,” Peggy says. “Our pastors and assistants have all been very pleasant, holy men. We are just so blessed here at St. Isidore.”

Blessings

OF OUR PARISH AND SCHOOL COMMUNITY

aria Martinez has been a parishioner at St. Isidore her entire life — but her faith really took off a few years ago when she decided to become more involved with the ministries and activities offered at our parish and school! Today, Maria and her husband, Ismael “Milo” Ortega, are thankful for the many ways the Lord has worked in the life of their family following their commitment to be more active disciples of Christ. For Maria and Milo, it all began when they transferred their son, Ismael, from the public school system to St. Isidore School. Ismael had been repeatedly bullied during his firstgrade year, both in the classroom and on the playground. He began taking comfort in wearing a rosary under his clothes both day and night. When a teacher took the rosary away from him one day — not understanding the deep meaning it held for him — Maria decided that enough was enough. She and her husband made the decision to enroll their son in our parish school. Their daughter, Mayva, began kindergarten at St. Isidore School. As Ismael and Mayva now start their fifth and third-grade years, respectively, the family couldn’t be happier to be a part of our school community. “The kids just love it,” Maria says. “They’re getting all their sacraments, so that’s good. And I felt really comfortable with the dynamic of it being a campus where all the kids work together, and the older kids go with them to Mass — they call it the buddy system. Tracy [Blankenship] in the office is just amazing with all the kids, and the other parents are all great and get along. We just love the school.” As the family became more and more connected with our school — and Maria began spending more time in our adoration chapel — a greater involvement in parish life followed. Maria and Milo began helping with FOCCUS marriage prep classes and Pre-Cana retreat weekends. Maria also helped with wedding rehearsals, and son Ismael has trained to become an altar server for weddings. Maria and Milo have found that staying active in

Maria Martinez (second from left) with her husband, Ismael (“Milo”) Ortega, and their children, Ismael (left) and Mayva (center), and sister-in-law, Janet (far right) their faith and helping others celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony has strengthened their own union. “Our marriage is definitely stronger after the FOCCUS classes, doing the wedding rehearsals, and helping with things at the school together,” Maria says. “We’re not perfect, but we work together, and it has helped us grow together as a couple. We do things as a team. I can tell him that I feel like I need to pray right now, and I know he understands. I feel blessed that he can also come to me and ask me to pray for him.” Last year, Maria was honored and humbled to be nominated to our Parish Council. She has loved getting to know all of the wonderful people on the council and learning about the many ministries that work together to make St. Isidore such a vibrant and welcoming parish community. Maria also feels like she learns from her children, who come home from St. Isidore School telling her everything they have learned about the Catholic faith each day. As someone who struggled with many questions about life as an adolescent, she is thankful that her son and daughter are growing up with a firm continued on page 8

aría Martínez ha sido feligresa de San Isidro toda su vida, pero su fe realmente despegó hace unos años cuando decidió involucrarse más en los ministerios y actividades que se ofrecen en nuestra parroquia y escuela! Hoy, María y su esposo, Ismael “Milo” Ortega, están agradecidos por las muchas formas en que el Señor ha trabajado en la vida de su familia siguiendo su compromiso de ser discípulos más activos de Cristo. Para María y Milo, todo comenzó cuando transfirieron a su hijo, Ismael, del sistema de escuelas públicas a la escuela de San Isidro. Ismael había sido acosado repetidamente durante su año de primer grado, tanto en el salón de clases como en el patio de recreo. Comenzó a consolarse llevando un rosario debajo de la ropa tanto de día como de noche. Cuando un maestro le quitó el rosario un día, sin comprender el profundo significado que tenía para él, María decidió que ya era suficiente. Ella y su esposo tomaron la decisión de inscribir a su hijo en nuestra escuela parroquial. Su hija, Mayva, comenzó el jardín de infancia en la escuela de San Isidro. Ahora que Ismael y Mayva comienzan su quinto y tercer grado,

respectivamente, la familia no podría estar más feliz de ser parte de nuestra comunidad escolar. “A los niños les encanta,” dice María. “Están recibiendo todos sus sacramentos, así que eso es bueno. Y me sentí realmente cómoda con la dinámica de que es una escuela donde todos los niños trabajan juntos y los niños mayores van con los mas pequeños a Misa; lo llaman el sistema de compañeros. foundation in the faith and a knowledge of God’s love for them. Of course, life for all young families today is certainly busy. Things became even more hectic for Maria when Ismael and Mayva transferred to our parish school. She had to juggle her schedule quite a bit in order to get them to school on time while keeping up with her job as a school bus driver. However, the rewards of making the family’s faith life a top priority have been great. “You’re never going to just have the time,” Maria says. “It’s like when you need to start a diet or make any big change in your life, and you keep saying, ‘tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow,’ Well, tomorrow is today — you just have to jump in! And if you get your kids involved as much as yourself, you’re not missing any time together. I hope a lot more families will get involved. There are so many great families at St. Isidore.” Reflecting on the past few years, Maria feels a deep sense of gratitude for the spiritual growth her family has experienced by becoming more engaged in the life of our parish and school community. “I’ve had so many blessings,” she says. “I feel that my husband and I are very close, and our relationship with our kids is very close and growing. I just feel blessed to be as close to God as I’ve been able to be. I can’t put it into words, but I know that every day with my kids is a blessing and every day my husband comes home is a blessing. Every day we start our day with Jesus, and every night we go to bed and end our day with Jesus.”

TALENT?

B R I N G I T T O T H E S P O T L IGH T!

he word “talent” often conjures up images of stage performers in the spotlight, captivating awestruck audiences with their impeccable musical or acting skills. While these talented performers are certainly deserving of applause, the majority of the population sits hidden in the shadows, staring on in amazement while feeling overlooked — and perhaps wishing to possess such talents themselves. But even when we feel overlooked and untalented, God knows better. As Christians, we are all called to dig deep and trust that we are specially blessed with valuable talents and abilities, even if our talents aren’t so obvious or don’t garner applause and accolades. Along with “time” and “treasure,” “talent” is one of the “three Ts” of stewardship. Exploring our natural inclinations and preferences, especially when guided by the intricacies of

our unique personalities, can unearth God-given talents. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same spirit,” writes St. Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians. “There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.” Some people have the gift of working peacefully with children. Equipped with patience and gentleness, they are able to guide young souls to the Lord. Yet, others shudder at the thought of a classroom full of 5-year-olds, and instead seek the quiet solace of behind-the-scenes tasks — cleaning the church, sewing altar cloths or stuffing envelopes. Our interests and abilities are varied, and our volunteer options are endless, as we are called to give our talents back to God in loving service. Examine your heart and prayerfully discern your gifts, then direct those gifts towards serving the people of God. continued on page 11

This national movement helps unite pro-lifers across the country so that they may provide a consistent presence of prayer at designated abortion facilities for a total of 40 consecutive days. “In fall of 2019 and spring of 2020 alone, we know of eight babies that were saved from abortion,” Maureen says. “We know that the presence of people praying and the positive signs we hold have caused women to cancel their appointments. Only God knows the true numbers saved.” St. Isidore’s Right to Life Ministry also coordinates baby showers for mothers in need, helps educate parishioners on pro-life matters, and offers training for volunteers interested in becoming sidewalk counselors. Working together with many dedicated parishioners, their goal is to continue spreading the pro-life message. “As I look back at our beginning and what the Lord has accomplished through these efforts, I am humbled to have been called to do His work,” Maureen says. “I have learned so much. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it is going to be forwards, backwards, or sideways.” If our gifts of talent are not guided by the discipline of prayer, just like an octopus on roller skates, we will get nowhere fast! Yet, if we keep our eyes on the goal of heaven and serve the Lord with joyfulness, our efforts will produce a bountiful harvest. In the words of St. Paul to the Corinthians, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully.” The next time you sit quietly in the shadows behind a glaring stage spotlight, rest assured that your talents are no less impressive in the eyes of God, and will always be “applauded” when directed to the service of His people.
