Lent Provides Us with Many Opportunities to Grow in Faith

E
ach year seems to go faster and faster. It seems Advent and Christmas have just passed — and before we know it, Lent is already over and Easter has arrived. We don’t want this time to sneak up on us this year — after all, Lent is an important time for renewal in our faith. With COVID-19 precautions in place, Lent activities could look different this year, says seminarian Victor Goranov. But Lent can still be an impactful time of conversion, personal prayer and penance. Victor loves to lead people to Jesus — and he will be doing just that through a virtual mini-series taking place on Sundays this Lent. The mini-series will be a great way to prepare our hearts and minds for Easter. continued on page 11

A Letter From Our Pastor
We Have a Powerful Ally in St. Joseph Dear Parishioners,
C
ount a tree’s rings and you discover the years it has passed through. You catch a glimpse of the journey it’s made. Thin rings may depict a particularly cold winter — blackened rings, a fire that passed through the forest. Our Lenten journey marks for us another passing of a year, another cycle returning. What distinguishes Lent this year? What stands out this spring? As we undertake our practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we find elements that are very familiar. As we become more fully a stewardship parish, we recognize that our prayer builds up the whole parish, that our fasting benefits the whole community and frees up more that we can give to the parish and others, that our almsgiving builds up the church so we can live out God’s commission. But in addition to the familiar, Lent 2021 also has distinctive characteristics of its own. As the fallout of our global pandemic continues to wreak havoc, Pope Francis points us to a guide for this critical moment. Declaring this year the Year of St. Joseph, the Holy Father draws our focus back to another tumultuous moment, when kings raged and empires were in upheaval, but when a newborn brought the promise of new life. St. Joseph, in the face of so much uncertainty, so much opposition, and so much responsibility, relentlessly trusted in God, and kept moving forward. His faith was invisible in the eyes of the world, but unlocked life for all of us. Pope Francis in his declaration writes: “Each of us can discover in Joseph — the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence — an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble.” This month, smack dab in the middle of Lent on March 19, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary. God introduces rescue, God saves a devastated world, through the family — through a husband, a wife, and a newborn child. Let this Lent be the Lent when you discover you have a powerful ally, a friend in high places. You can gain

extraordinary graces and indulgences (see note below) with St. Joseph. St. Isidore’s, our families, our school, our town and county — and the world — need help from heaven. Look to the giant among the saints, known as the Terror of Demons, and start winning with St. Joseph. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Tenemos un Poderoso Queridos Feligreses, uenta los anillos de un árbol y descubrirás los años por los que ha pasado. Echa un vistazo al viaje que ha realizado. Los anillos delgados pueden representar un invierno particularmente frío: anillos ennegrecidos, un fuego que atravesó el bosque. Nuestro viaje de Cuaresma marca para nosotros otro paso de un año, otro ciclo que regresa. ¿Qué distingue a la Cuaresma de este año? ¿Qué destaca esta primavera? Al emprender nuestras prácticas de oración, ayuno y limosna, encontramos elementos que nos son muy familiares. St. Paul Street Evangelization:
Learning About Our Faith and Drawing Closer to God’s Love
W
hat do you think when you hear the word “evangelization”? For many of us, the idea of sharing our faith with someone else may be an intimidating concept. What would you say? How might the other person respond? However, for the members of St. Paul Street Evangelization, their desire to share with others about their relationship with God helps to quiet the voices of doubt. “We’re a grassroots organization,” says parishioner Greg Thompson, who coordinates the group. “The idea is to provide a public witness to the truth of the Catholic faith out in front of places like Walmart or the farmers’ market — anywhere that people gather.” After growing in his own faith as an adult through adult faith formation classes, as well as Catholic radio, Greg began to realize how much misinformation was out there about Catholicism, even among Catholics. “It just seemed like something that needed to be done to help people understand the faith, to get out there and help people understand,” Greg says. Although things have looked a bit different for the group over the past year, St. Paul Street Evangelization typically gathers once a month to share their faith in front of the Walmart in Yuba City. In addition, each summer, they host a table at the Yuba City Fair. As you can probably imagine, stepping out to share your faith for the first time can be quite intimidating. However, the group has Rosaries and Miraculous Medals that they share with people to get the conversation going. “It was scary the first time,” Greg says. “When you go out there, you don’t know what’s going to happen. But most of the time people are just interested and wanted to hear what we had to say. We would offer people a Rosary and we’d get all kinds of reactions. Some people would ignore you or say, ‘Maybe later,’ and 4
you’d have Catholics who were interested in a free Rosary. Then you’d get somebody who didn’t know anything about the faith, and they might be interested, and ask you questions.” During this time when they are not yet back in front of Walmart, the group has a table outside of Mass, providing people with resources to share the faith with their family and friends. “We hope people are encouraged to draw closer to our Lord,” Greg says. “We have all these brochures, and we hope they’ll read those and learn a little more about the Catholic faith if they’re not familiar. Or, if they are Catholic, we hope that they’ll take their faith to a little bit deeper level.” Greg encourages his fellow parishioners to consider whether God may be inviting them to grow in their faith by becoming a part of St. Paul Street Evangelization. “You have to take the action — faith without works is dead,” Greg says. “Put your faith into action and you’ll deepen your relationship with our Lord. “You don’t have to be a theologian,” he adds. “You just have to be willing to share your love of Jesus with others and communicate what He’s done in your life.” If you would like more information, or to learn how you can become involved in St. Paul Street Evangelization, please contact coordinator Greg Thompson at gregandjill565@gmail.com or 530-713-9909.

In a Year of Loss, ancy ummy Finds Blessings in the Gifts of Faith and Community
B
efore parishioner Nancy Summy joined the Catholic Church in 1980, she had been a nonpracticing Protestant. She regularly attended Mass with her Catholic husband, Dave, and the couple’s three daughters were baptized in the Catholic faith. After Nancy and Dave participated in a Marriage Encounter weekend, Nancy decided to fully enter the Church. “It was wonderful and just really life-changing,” Nancy says. “With Marriage Encounter, we met as couples every two months. We made a lot of friends and received so much support. It was the beginning of community.” Inspired by their own experience, Nancy and Dave continued to help with the Marriage Encounter program for over twenty years. When they felt it was time to allow some younger couples to step into the ministry, they remained active in parish life by getting involved with the hospitality side of RCIA. Nancy greatly enjoys the opportunity to “pay it forward” by helping St. Isidore welcome new Catholics into the Church. “I just keep learning more from the teachers that are presenting with RCIA, and I like that part,” she says. “It’s a great ministry, and to see those people excited about coming into the Church — it makes me relive my own experience.” Nancy also serves with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. For about 15 years, she has been one of this ministry’s “Wednesday ladies.” Like her involvement in Marriage Encounter and RCIA, Nancy finds her participation in this group to be greatly rewarding. Perhaps the greatest reward of staying close to
Christ is the peace and comfort we find in Him even in the most difficult circumstances. For many of us, the past year has been challenging. In addition to the struggles we have all faced in the midst of a global pandemic, Nancy has also been dealing with the loss of her beloved husband on Dec. 29, 2019. In her grief, however, she has been able to remain thankful for God’s blessings, including the timing of the funeral last January, when friends and family were able to gather to celebrate Dave’s life just before the pandemic struck. With her faith as a solid foundation in troubled times, Nancy has also been able to find some blessings in the slower pace of this past year. “We have so much more time to reflect and pray,” she says. “I think I’ve done more reading and praying this year because I didn’t have any place that I had to go, so I’ve had that time to search more, read more, pray more. I did a lot of reading. That’s probably the biggest blessing this year — a lot of quiet time and learning to pray more. Just saying, ‘Guide me, Holy Spirit.’ That part has been good.” As for the strong Catholic faith that enables her to see the blessings in the midst of so much loss, Nancy is the first to say she has Dave to thank. She also credits Dave’s encouragement as the primary reason all three of the couple’s daughters have stayed in the Church and are now passing the faith down to their own children. Nancy will always be grateful for the gift of faith that Dave so generously shared with the family. “His faith was so strong and he just helped lead me,” Nancy says. “And I think you need that, especially in these hard times. They’re not so hard with Jesus, because I feel Him next to me. I’m not really alone, continued on page 8

ntes de que la feligresa Nancy Summy se uniera a la Iglesia Católica en el año 1980, ella era protestante no practicante. Asistía regularmente a Misa con su esposo Católico, Dave, y las tres hijas de la pareja se bautizaron en la fe Católica. Después de que Nancy y Dave participaron en un fin de semana de Encuentros matrimoniales, Nancy decidió ingresar de lleno a la Iglesia. “Fue maravilloso y realmente cambió mi vida,” dice Nancy. “Con el Encuentro Matrimonial, nos reuníamos con otras parejas cada dos meses. Hicimos muchos amigos y recibimos mucho apoyo. Fue el comienzo de una comunidad.” Inspirados por su propia experiencia, Nancy y Dave continuaron ayudando con el programa Encuentro Matrimonial durante más de veinte años. Durante unos 15 años, ha sido una de las “damas de los Miércoles” de este ministerio. Al igual que su participación en el Encuentro Matrimonial y RICA, Nancy encuentra su participación en este grupo muy gratificante. Esa es probablemente la mayor bendición de este año: mucho tiempo en silencio para aprender a rezar más. Solo digo: «Espíritu Santo, guíame.” Esa parte ha sido buena.” En cuanto a la fuerte fe Católica que le permite ver las bendiciones en medio de tanta pérdida, Nancy es la primera en decir que tiene que agradecer a Dave. También le da crédito al ánimo de Dave como la razón principal por la que las tres hijas de la pareja se han quedado en la Iglesia y ahora están transmitiendo la fe a sus propios hijos. because Jesus is there, and that is a big comfort.” Along with the abiding example of faith Nancy had in her husband, the faith community here at St. Isidore has also been an uplifting presence in her life. She is thankful for the blessing of 24-hour adoration, the many parish ministries, and the extraordinarily loving people in the St. Isidore faith family. “I feel so fortunate,” Nancy says. “We have a wonderful parish and wonderful priests, and the seminarian this year is an extra blessing. This whole church community — these friends — I don’t know what I’d do without them. Their concern is so genuine. I feel like they’ve gotten me through. “It all makes me want to reach out to other people, too,” she adds. “It’s been a year and I feel like, ‘God what do you want me to do now?’ That’s what I’m praying now, just for Him to guide me. I know He’s got something for me to do.”

Hospitality: T H E C O RNERSTONE OF STEWARDSH I P
T
he dictionary defines “hospitality” as “the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly, generous way.” A Christian worldview can refer to hospitality as “Christian kindness.” We see the effects of hospitality – or the lack thereof – time and time again throughout the Bible. Christ speaks of hospitality in Matthew’s Gospel when He says, “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35). The Old Testament told of the Israelites, as they wandered the desert for 40 years in search of hospitable environs. Even the Holy Family spent ample time searching for shelter before the birth of Our Lord. It is safe to say that hospitality is, and most likely has always been, of great importance to people everywhere. Modern hotels and hostels often use the image of a pineapple to advertise their special brand of hospitality. There is no doubt that in ancient times, the distant lights of an inn or tavern struck a chord of hope within weary travelers’ hearts. Indeed, hospitality’s meaning has not diminished at all over the years, decades, and millennia. Christians view the presence of hospitality as meaning the difference between calling others “guests” and “strangers.” Guests are welcomed with open arms and warm smiles, but strangers aren’t. Guests feel the genuine love present in a hearty welcome, but strangers
don’t. Guests often return for second or third visits, while strangers don’t. As a parish, do we find ourselves surrounded by guests, or burdened by strangers? Hospitality is, in many respects, a mindset. The same person may be treated as a guest at the church just down the road, but as a stranger here. Matthew’s Gospel tells of Christ as He reveals a profound truth about hospitality: “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” That is, “I used to be a stranger, but you fixed that when you welcomed me.” It’s a classic example of before-and-after. All it took was a change of heart. Stewardship holds hospitality as an immensely important concept. Remember the “Three Ts” of stewardship – Time, Talent, and Treasure? Well, there are also “Four Ps,” the Four Pillars of Stewardship – Hospitality, Prayer, Formation, and Service. Hospitality is mentioned first. Why? If not for hospitality, none of the other pillars will ever take hold. Hospitality is the cornerstone of stewardship because it opens the door to a person’s heart and allows them to receive joy, grace, and love. Hospitality must become second nature if stewardship is to truly take hold within a parish. So, when a stranger visits our parish, welcome them as a guest. Perhaps one day, they’ll pay us a second visit.

l diccionario define “hospitalidad” como “la calidad o disposición de recibir y tratar a invitados y extraños de una manera cálida, amigable y generosa.” Una vista mundial Cristiana puede referirse a la hospitalidad como “bondad cristiana.” Vemos los efectos de la hospitalidad, o la falta de ella, una y otra vez a lo largo de la Biblia. Cristo habla de la hospitalidad en el Evangelio de Mateo cuando dice: “Cuando era forastero, me recibiste” (Mateo 25:35). El Antiguo Testamento habla de los Israelitas, mientras vagaban por el desierto durante 40 años en busca de entornos hospitalarios. Los hoteles y hostales modernos a menudo utilizan la imagen de una piña para publicitar su marca especial de hospitalidad. El Evangelio de Mateo habla de Cristo cuando revela una verdad profunda sobre la hospitalidad: “Cuando era forastero, me recibiste.” Es decir, “Solía ser un extraño, pero lo arreglaste cuando me diste la bienvenida.” Es un ejemplo clásico de antes y después. Todo lo que necesitó fue un cambio de opinión. La entrega considera la hospitalidad como un concepto inmensamente importante. ¿Recuerda las “Tres Ts” de la entrega: tiempo, talento y tesoro? Bueno, también están las “Cuatro Ps,” los Cuatro Pilares de la Entrega: Hospitalidad, Oración, Formación y Servicio. Primero se menciona la hospitalidad. ¿Por qué? La hospitalidad es la piedra angular de la entrega porque abre la puerta al corazón de una persona y le permite recibir gozo, gracia y amor. Avram Brown led a similar series on Thursdays with a theme of preparing for Christmas and waiting for the Kingdom of God. About 40 to 50 people joined each week, and the series included an hour-long reflection with time for questions. “We got some very positive feedback from this, so we decided we would try it again for Lent,” Victor says. The upcoming Lent mini-series will be the first time that Victor has led a program like this, and he really looks forward to the opportunity to lead people to Jesus. People of our parish have been asking for more opportunities for adult faith formation, so this will be a great way to fill that need. “This will be a chance to deepen the spirituality of our parish and give people more of an understanding of the season of Lent,” Victor says. Victor invites all parishioners, young and old, to attend the mini-series. Each session will follow a new theme, so you can attend as many or as few as you like. There won’t be a book, as the series is topic-based. If you can’t attend the mini-series, Victor recommends a few other ways to observe the Lenten season. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers a number of resources on their website, usccb.org. You may also consider purchasing a Lenten reflection book or following resources from a variety of Catholic Internet apps. Most importantly, we should all make the effort to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent — there will be additional Confession times and dates available. “We should make attending Confession a high priority during Lent,” Victor says. “Lent means ‘spring,’ so it’s a time of preparation. We should think of Lent like spring cleaning. There is nothing like going into Easter with a clean conscience.” Victor also says giving something up can be a wonderful way to prepare for Easter. When we stop eating chocolate or commit to less sin, we can turn our minds and hearts closer to Jesus.

“When we give something up, it helps us spiritually detach from things that have an oversized influence in our lives, and it helps us get in touch with the reality of things,” Victor says. “This life is temporary. The more we unstick from things that entangle us, the easier it is to stick to Jesus.” Let’s use this Lent as a chance to be with Jesus in the desert and grow in faith.
