Young Parishioners Are United with Jesus in the Eucharist

or young Catholics and their families, First Communion is a very exciting and blessed occasion. Last year, in the wake of COVID-19, First Communion celebrations were delayed, and the students received the sacrament at several Saturday morning Masses, in small groups. However, this year, the youth celebrated alongside the larger congregation at several Sunday Masses in May. It was an exciting and blessed Martha Coloradotime for the communicants. Prior and her family “Because receiving Communion celebrate her First unites us more closely with Christ Communion. and, through Him, with one another, we want to incorporate our community into this beautiful day,” says Michelle Knox, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd & Family Faith Formation Director. ara los jóvenes Católicos y sus familias, la Primera Comunión es una ocasión muy emocionante y bendecida. A Letter From Our Pastor
Redefining Love
THROUGH THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS Dear Parishioners,
O
ne of the great feasts of the Christian year will occur in June, but it is often overlooked. It doesn’t fall on a Sunday, and it isn’t a Holy Day of Obligation. I am referring to the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which will be on June 11 this year. This wonderful feast provides a great way to begin the summer. However, despite widespread devotion and many parish dedications to the Sacred Heart, many Catholics have only a vague idea of what it’s all about. So, let me try to briefly fill in the picture. Often, when we think of the heart, we think of it as the seat of our emotions and feelings. The heart is often contrasted with the mind, as though our God-given reason were somehow evil or, at best, second-rate. But feelings come and go — we can’t really depend on our emotions to be reliable, steady guides. However, when classical theology refers to the heart, it is considering an aspect of human life that goes beyond our feelings. It includes our will, where we make decisions. The heart can be considered the center of our personhood. In explaining Christian teaching about human nature, the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “The spiritual tradition of the Church also emphasizes the heart, in the biblical sense of the depths of one’s being, where the person decides for or against God” (368). It is common to mistakenly label love as an emotion. Love often includes feelings, but true love is more than that. Real love is a settled attitude that wants the best for the person being loved. That’s why the Church’s teaching usually uses the term “charity” — to distinguish the Christian virtue
2
from the more superficial popular concept of love. The Catechism tells us, “Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. Jesus makes charity the new commandment. By loving his own ‘to the end,’ he makes manifest the Father’s love which he receives. By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love of Jesus which they themselves receive” (CCC, 1822-1823). This sort of love, this charity — demonstrated by Jesus Christ and commanded to His followers — is no lightweight passing emotion. Feelings alone do not bring one to offer oneself to an agonizing death for the sake of someone else. No, that sort of sacrifice can only come from a considered and deliberate decision. Although we sometimes forget that fact, Jesus is fully human as well as fully divine. So, His human heart was involved in His sacrifice on the Cross. Thus, simply put, devotion to the Sacred Heart reminds us of the basic fact that God loves us. It was a costly love, the ultimate act of charity, to give His life on our behalf. We know the kind of love Jesus has for us. What kind of loving response are you going to make? How will that affect your use of your time, talent and treasure? Sincerely yours in Christ,

Redefiniendo el Amor
A TRAVÉS DEL SAGRADO CORAZÓN DE JESÚS Queridos Feligreses,
U

or Joe and Sandra Mitchell, keeping their faith as the center of their lives has helped them grow together as a family, in their relationship with God, and with the greater parish community. “Our stewardship allows for our own development of a deeper relationship with Christ — a greater intimacy with Him,” Joe says. “I am drawn to stewardship for love of our Lord, and stewardship in return brings me greater love for our Lord. It is a very reciprocal relationship. “Being more involved with the parish has helped us to cultivate friendships we may never have experienced had we remained ‘spectators,’” he adds. “Our lives are enriched by all the wonderful people we have met as we have become more involved with parish life. By participating in parish ministries, we are trying to live an active faith that will hopefully inspire our children and others to do the same.” Joe was born and raised in Yuba City, and Sandra grew up in the Central Valley/Turlock area. Both grew up around agriculture — Joe, fruits and nuts; Sandra, cows and dairy — and met in college at Chico State in 2001. They were married in 2005, and afterward moved to the Bay Area for graduate school and work. The couple has four children —Henry, 9; Samuel, 7; Olivia, 5; Hannah, 1 — and a fifth baby due in August. Sandra was raised Catholic — however, Joe is a convert, and entered the Church on Easter in 2018. While he didn’t attend church regularly growing up, he did believe in God and identified as a Christian. “When I met and eventually married my wife, I would go to Mass with her at whichever Catholic church we were living nearest to,” Joe says. “She comes from a large Portuguese family who, for the most part, are very devout Catholics. I always thought of the Catholic faith as ‘her thing.’ For this reason, along with my own sense of pride, I never considered joining the faith. My pride stemmed mostly from my
The Mitchell family identity with my family — my parents are two of the most generous people I know. They are smart, successful and kind, and they never sought out or ‘needed’ religion. So, I was happy to just accompany my wife to church never giving much thought to joining.” Around the time that their oldest children were born, Sandra struggled with health issues. “We began to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Rosary together as a way to help us through such a difficult time,” Joe says. “It was also during continued on page 8

that time that a close friend of ours brought a traveling statue of Our Lady to our house, so we could pray a novena and ask for healing. Although throughout this period I still didn’t have the desire to join the Church, I know our Blessed Mother planted a seed in my heart when she came to our home. “When the time came to return the traveling Our Lady, our house felt empty and I felt a longing for her,” he adds. “But it wasn’t until mid-2017 that I felt the calling to join the Church. At St. Isidore during that time, the congregation would pray a vocation prayer before every Mass. At one particular Mass, I said the prayer, and asked God to let it be me who would respond to His call. Not long after, I spoke to the RCIA coordinator and began learning more about the faith and the teachings of the Church. I had wonderful classmates who were engaged, curious and thoughtful — and I had a great support system with my in-laws, Catholic friends and especially my wife.” After Joe entered the Church, something clicked, and the family became more involved at the parish. Among other ministries, they have helped out with the Music Ministry, RCIA, the Parish Council and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The stewardship way of life has truly helped them to grow in faith, together, as a family. “Sandra has been able to help with the formation of all of our kids through CGS,” Joe says. “She has also become involved with the current Family Faith Formation program by checking in with families and providing formation help. We also pray as a family on a daily basis. I currently serve as a parish council member, help with RCIA, make rosaries, and am an active third order lay Dominican.” Joe’s rosary-making ministry started in November 2017, while he was going through the RCIA process. “I was looking for a rosary to buy, but could only find plastic ones, or very ornate ones,” he says. “I had begun to develop a devotion to Our Lady, and was praying a Rosary daily and wanted a more rugged

and personal rosary. I looked up videos on how to tie knots and how to make rosaries and found supplies for making them online. I began making rosaries and then sharing them with people I encountered. Since then, I have made and given away over a thousand rosaries. I have also taught classes on how to make them at the parish, and have met other rosary makers spreading the devotion. It has been a wonderful journey!” Joe also became interested in the Dominican Order while in RCIA, through one of his RCIA instructors. “I began attending monthly meetings with him and learning more about the order by becoming an inquirer,” Joe says. “The meetings begin with morning prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, followed by Mass and a Rosary. Afterwards, we would discuss any assigned readings and cover any formation assignments. I was drawn to the order because I was seeking to learn more about the Catholic faith after completing RCIA. ‘Study’ is one of the four pillars of the Dominican charism, along with prayer, service and community. I find that the charism has immensely helped me in trying to live an authentically Catholic and Christ-centered life. I also feel a kinship to the many Dominicans who have promoted the Rosary and are devoted to our Blessed Mother.” The Mitchell family’s parish involvement has truly brought them closer to the parish family as a whole, as well. For example, through Joe’s involvement in the Music Ministry, he was able to meet his music partner — who, along with his wife, became godparents to Joe and Sandra’s daughter — and provide music for his brother-in-law’s wedding. Joe reflects on how taking the leap to get involved has truly changed his life. “Being involved in ministries is something I never thought I wanted or needed in my life, but it has fulfilled me in a profound way,” he says. “I would never have experienced any of this had I not said ‘yes.’”

years, and she really enjoys helping prepare second-grade students for First Communion. The first communicants also receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving for the first time. Most of the preparation for First Communion is done as a family with learning materials provided by St. Isidore. Michelle hopes this helps the whole family to grow in faith. “Preparation and reception of this sacrament helps unite families and often increases the desire of the parents to receive Holy Communion and participate more fully in the sacramental life of the Church,” Michelle says. The children always wait in anticipation for this special day, having spent months in preparation, studying Scripture and the Paschal Mystery. They have also reviewed the gestures and prayers of the Mass. “When the children receive the Body and Blood of our Lord, they are usually filled with joy, peace and thanksgiving,” Michelle says. However, we are all blessed by the Sacrament of First Communion. As the Body of Christ, when more members join with us, it is a time to rejoice. “Each one of us has a unique and irreplaceable identity and mission in the Church,” Michelle says. “We are one in Christ, and this unity is increased and strengthened when we gather together at the altar to partake of the Body and Blood of Christ.” After the time of preparation, it was beautiful to watch the second-grade students receive First Communion in the month of May. Our whole parish celebrates with them and their families. “Jesus desired to remain with us, and so instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper as a memorial of His death and Resurrection,” Michelle says. “We help the children to recognize and reciprocate this desire to be in union with Him. This union is realized when we receive His Body and Blood in Holy Communion.” Michelle invites all parishioners to support the first communicants through prayer. There is the parable of the vigilant and faithful servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, “ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks” (Lk 12:35-40). There is the story of the good Samaritan who was moved with compassion to help the victim of a violent robbery (Lk 10:25-37). And there are several examples of Christ serving those around Him — feeding the multitudes, healing the sick, and even turning water into wine at a wedding banquet. Why is service a running theme throughout the Gospels? Because service is at the root of living in imitation of Christ. Christ served others throughout His life on Earth, and His death on the cross was the ultimate act of service to mankind. And when we serve others, we are not only following in Christ’s footsteps, we are also serving Christ Himself: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). As a stewardship parish, service must be at the heart of everything we do. The parish community is the bastion of service within the Catholic Church, as we serve one another and are also served by our brothers and sisters in Christ. As the Diocese of Wichita’s document, The Pillars of Parish Stewardship, states, “Like a blood family, the parish family stands ready and eager collectively to wrap their arms around their brothers and sisters when they suffer in trial and/ or celebrate special events in their lives.” It is good to recognize the parish community as a place where service is appreciated and can be utilized for the good of the Church. However, it is not enough for us to simply serve other members of our parish family. As disciples of Christ, it is our obligation to serve people in need everywhere they exist — in our families, our greater community, our country, and throughout the world. This can be a challenging concept, as it is often much more comfortable and continued on page 12

SERVICE

convenient to serve those who are close to us than it is to reach out to “outsiders.” But, as The Pillars of Parish Stewardship eloquently points out, “Failure to have this understanding leads to a selfish parochialism, which is life draining to a parish stewardship way of life.” Think of ways that you can serve others around you, both within our parish family and in the greater community. Our many parish ministries offer a great place to begin offering your time and talents, but the opportunities for service don’t end there. There are many civic and nonprofit organizations that do an immense amount to serve others across the globe and are always looking for volunteers. Once you serve, you will find that you will reap numerous rewards in return, much like the faithful servants who doubled the talents their master had entrusted to them: “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy” (Mt 25:21).
SERVICIO
