Hope and Trust IN THE LORD

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH

2021 STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL

Hope and Trust IN THE LORD

“H

ope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1817). Hope summarizes the deepest longing and disposition of a disciple's heart. It is not something we naturally possess or acquire on our own — rather, it is something that is gifted to us by the grace of God. It is through pursuit of God that we can begin to attain this virtue. Ultimately, it is through the practice of stewardship — recognizing everything as a gift from God and cultivating those gifts for His Kingdom — that we can be receptive to hope. The steward, striving for eternal life, surrenders all that he has to God, knowing that the grace of the Holy Spirit surpasses even his or her noblest efforts. With the virtue of hope, we will not grow weary for we recognize that God hears even our smallest requests. This is why, as faithful stewards, we are called to Hope and Trust in the Lord!

“And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” — Romans 5:5 2

Gift of

TIME

G

od has gifted us with time. How we spend our time can be an expression of love and gratitude to our Heavenly Father. Do we spend it cultivating our relationship with Him and our loved ones? Prayer is a primary way to grow in our relationship with God. It strengthens and nourishes the life of a disciple. Christ taught us a prayer of hope — the Our Father. We offer this prayer at every Mass and it proclaims the hopeful message of mercy and trustful surrender. Do we pray this prayer with zeal? Do we live as we pray? It is through the very act of praying that our hearts will be willing to surrender our lives to the will of God. CONSIDER THESE IDEAS TO DEEPEN YOUR PRAYER LIFE:

eflect on your prayer life. How can you increase the time you R spend with God in prayer? How can you incorporate prayer into your family life? editate on the Our Father. Ask for the grace to pray it with M zeal, and to live by what you pray. ray for the virtue of hope and for the grace to share the P message of hope.

“Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” — St. Padre Pio 3

Gift of

TALENT

E

ach of us has been given gifts and talents. Through the message of stewardship, we realize that we cannot take recognition for these gifts. Rather, it is through the love and generosity of our Heavenly Father that we have been blessed. We show our gratitude to God by sharing our talents for His glory. Are you using your gifts and talents to build the Kingdom of God? How is God calling you to serve Him here and now? Let us each be a vessel of God’s grace to one another. We cannot quantify the effects of God at work in us. PRAY ABOUT THE FOLLOWING POSSIBILITIES:

onsider how God can use your talents to build up His C Kingdom. ead through our parish’s Ministry Catalog, discern where R God is calling you, and consider joining a new ministry. I f you already serve in a ministry, reflect on how you can better serve and grow the ministry.

"Let us make the very best use of the precious moments and do all in our power for His dear sake and for His greater honor and glory." — St. Marianne Cope

Gift of

TREASURE

J

ust as time and talents are gifts from God, so too, are material things, or treasure. And just as the use of our time and talent can glorify God, so too, does the use of our treasure. God has a plan for every aspect of our lives, including our finances. We must learn how to take the gifts God has given us — our skills, our abilities, and our income — and surrender them to His plan for our lives. This trustful surrender fills us with hope, freedom and joy that only God can provide. OUT OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE FOR THE GIFTS GOD HAS GIVEN US, REFLECT ON THE FOLLOWING:

ur parish invites each family to give 10 percent of its gross O income to God — 5% through the offertory and 5% to the diocese and other worthy causes — to give according to the scriptural tithe. I n order to accomplish this goal, we also must learn how to manage the remaining 90 percent. By setting goals, creating a personal budget, sticking to our budgeting plan and, most importantly, coming to a greater understanding of the role generosity plays in our financial and spiritual lives, we can all exercise good stewardship of our treasure. Pray for guidance and wisdom when dealing with your treasure. 5

Ministries

We are blessed to have numerous ministries, organizations, boards and committees at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church! As recommended by our diocese, these ministries are organized under six “commissions,” including Evangelization, Faith Formation, Liturgy, Parish Life, School and Stewardship. Below is a list of all the ministries and groups in our parish.

The Evangelization Commission IC PRAYER NETWORK Our purpose is to offer prayers of intercession for persons in need. Examples: surgery, accidents, death, hospitalization, etc. Each person is prayed for by name every day for one week. If additional prayer is desired, another phone request can be made. Contact: Jackie Pickering, 501-758-0293

MARTHA’S KITCHEN Martha’s Kitchen provides an excellent opportunity to heed Jesus’ call to “feed my sheep.” Have you ever felt a tug in your heart when you hear about people living on the streets, or are you moved by the works of St. Teresa of Calcutta and

wonder how you can help? If so, Martha’s Kitchen may be a ministry for you. Martha’s Kitchen provides homemade meals to be distributed to the homeless in Little Rock. You can help by shopping, cooking, or both. Every month there are grocery bags in the vestibule that you can pick up and fill with the non-perishable items needed for that month’s meal. If you’d like to help cook, we meet the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall kitchen to prepare meals. Contact: Karen Baxter-Rhoades, 501-240-1770

NURSERY The nursery is available during our Saturday 4:30 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Masses for babies and children six months through 4 years old. If you are a ministry or group that is interested in providing a nursery for your meetings, please contact the church office. Contact: Church Office at 501-835-4323 when making nursery reservations for your child or children. The nursery is located down the stairs on the left when you enter the Church vestibule or through the left, single door by Adoration.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry is an informal group of the IC Altar Society that meets at Immaculata

Hall from 9-11 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month to knit/crochet shawls for the sick, baby blankets for St. Joseph’s Helpers and caps for newborns at Children’s Hospital. Contact: Valerie Gattini, 501-758-1713

RESPECT LIFE Our mission is to provide information and education, as well as encourage others to be active, concerning the many threats toward the “sanctity of human life,” namely issues such as abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and bioethics. In striving to promote the “culture of life” mentality, we must proclaim the inherent dignity and value of each human being as a gift from God, from conception to natural death. Contact: Susan Tanner, 501-690-2262

VOCATIONS CHALICE BOX One of the primary ways we pray for vocations to the priesthood includes our Vocations Chalice Box. This chalice box contains a priest’s chalice, a DVD and prayer cards for praying for vocations. Members of our parish can sign up through the church office to take the Vocations Chalice Box home and pray each day for vocations. The chalice can be used as a centerpiece for prayer, and the DVD is a wonderful video about the priesthood! Contact: Church Office, 501-835-4323 7

VOCATIONS COMMITTEE At Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, we are dedicated to supporting and praying for vocations to marriage, priesthood, religious life and the dedicated single life. In regard to vocations to the priesthood and religious life, we host numerous seminarians at our parish for ministry work, internships, and we have even adopted a seminarian who did not have a home parish in our diocese! Contact: Tom Brooks, 501-350-6759

The Faith Formation Commission ADULT FAITH FORMATION

8

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops lists three major goals to help guide and direct our efforts in Adult Faith Formation: 1. Invite and enable ongoing conversion to Jesus in holiness of life; 2. Promote and support active membership in the Christian community; 3. Call and prepare adults to act as disciples in mission to the world. This is a lifelong journey of growing in knowledge and understanding of our faith, along with spiritual and personal growth in our relationship with Jesus and His Church. Please consider attending one of the many Adult Faith Formation groups being offered throughout the year. Currently we have various groups meeting, including Vincentian Ministry, Apologetics, Walking with Purpose, Catechism of the Catholic

Church, The Temperament God Gave You, and upcoming groups include Revelation, Forming Intentional Disciples Book Study and various upcoming parish-wide retreats. The parish has also acquired a subscription to FORMED.org, which makes this wonderful resource available to every parishioner. Contact: Phyllis Eubanks, 501-835-4323, ext. 103, or rciacoordinator@iccnlr.org

DIVINE MERCY COMMITTEE We promote the message of our Lord’s Divine Mercy as He revealed in the Diary of St. Maria Faustina and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m., before the 6:45 a.m. Mass, and on Fridays, 3 p.m., in the Adoration Chapel. We assist the School’s Director of Religious Education in promoting this message. The sick and dying are kept in prayer and we welcome a request by an ill parishioner or their family member to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet at their bedside at home or in the hospital. Contact: Jenny Gates, 501-758-6107, 501-912-6154, or gates_m@sbcglobal.net

ENTHRONEMENT MINISTRY This ministry guides individuals or families through the “enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home or business.” It gives a home or business a visual reminder of the centrality of Christ by establishing a prayer altar, trusting that “a family altar alters a family.” Contact: Church Office, 501-835-4323

Modeled on the process used in the first few centuries of Christianity, RCIA offers men and women the opportunity to learn about the gifts the Catholic Church

offers to help people build their relationship with Jesus Christ. Contact: Youth Faith Formation Director Phyllis Eubanks, 501-835-4323, ext. 103, or rciacoordinator@iccnlr.org

VINCENTIAN MINISTRY We meet from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday night in the church office conference room. The purpose is to help you grow in your love for Jesus and the Holy Spirit. We do this by reflecting on our lives and sharing biblical passages with one another in a small community. YOUTH MINISTRY The mission of the Catholic Youth Ministry organization is to help the young people hear the Gospel message and respond with enthusiasm. Our goal is to reach out in service to the parish community and to evangelize. Together, we will seek a deeper knowledge of the Gospel message, help shape morals and values, and encourage one another to become actively involved in the mission life of the Church. This is a safe and caring environment where we are inspired to live the faith and grow closer to God. Adult parishioners are invited to provide the youth with the type of spiritual role models necessary to help them grow in the Catholic faith. Everyone is welcome! We also assist with parishwide functions such as Falcon Fest, the fall Soup Tasting fundraiser for Arts and Crafts, Meals for the Diocesan House of Discernment, and an annual baby shower for either Birthright or the Arkansas Pregnancy Resource Center on a rotating basis. We have three primary committees that have taken

on a life of their own but rely on our members to staff and support. One coordinates the parish-wide funeral meals, and another divides our members into monthly committees to oversee altar care and all it entails. The third committee, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, is described in more detail in the Evangelization Commission. Contact: Joan Finnegan, 501-517-5153 or jfinne@lrchs.org

When we surrender all that we have out of gratitude for what God has given us, we are transformed! This may seem like a daunting task. However, do not grow weary — the Holy Spirit will give us the necessary grace. This is a message of hope! The transformation begins now. Making a Consistent Gift through the Offertory

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart.” In order to keep this commandment, we need to spend time in prayer, talking to the One we love most. Below are some suggested ways to make prayer a priority.

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love requires that we act in the best interests of others. How can you serve others by your involvement in parish ministries? When you sign up for a ministry, the leader will call you to explain how to become involved.

“For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will... but first they gave themselves to the Lord” (2nd Cor. 8:3-5). At Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, we ask that each household give:
