academic and faith foundation, as the Catholic faith is woven into everything they do at school. Another facet of a Catholic school is service hours which are required of each student. This is another way they grow in service to our Lord. “Supporting our children’s spirituality and academics leads to a well-rounded, productive member of society as they move from school to the workforce,” Pat says. “Through Catholic school, our students learn to be servants not only to God but to others as well.” Pat hopes all parishioners will consider continued support to the Tuition Assistance Ministry, whether through direct donations, or by attending or supporting all the fundraisers, such as Oktoberfest, Cinco de Mayo, Discount Card sales, and Raffles, to name a few. Students who receive tuition assistance also must complete service hours at our parish. Olivia and Bella look forward to continuing their education at Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School, as well as participating in the Cheer Team. They love the camaraderie with the other girls and the positive team morale. Bella, especially, looks forward to continuing her work in cheerleading so that she can be on a college team. In May, there were 40 graduates from Gorman. This group collectively received $5.4 million in college scholarship offers. They had volunteered more than 1,600 hours in their senior year alone. Six students signed letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level in a sport, and five were accepted into honors programs. In addition, four students attained the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout. We feel privileged to have our students in such an excellent educational situation. Please join us in praying for the Class of 2021 students as they go onto the next step on their life journeys. Please pray for all St. Boniface students, too — we are proud of each of them!

I
n his letters, St. Paul often began by greeting his “brothers and sisters.” Every time I read one of these letters, it reminds me that you and I truly are sisters and brothers in the Body of Christ, the Church, but especially here in our parish. We need to understand that we are indeed a family, and the way we see and treat one another is fundamental to the health and happiness of this family. Our spiritual family doesn’t stop at the walls of our church, but rather, extends to include every man and woman created in God’s image and likeness. You may be familiar with the term “Catholic Social Teaching,” part of which is built on a commitment to the poor. These are the beliefs that guide Catholics on how to apply the faith to all aspects of life, and they lay the framework for the Church’s teachings on the dignity and sacredness of human life. Once we make a commitment to be disciples of Jesus and pursue stewardship as a way of life, the principles of Catholic Social Teaching become very easy to incorporate into our lives. Catholic Social Teaching has been around since those first followers of Jesus tried to balance their new faith with the realities of living in a world of Roman oppression. Jesus reminded His disciples then, just as He reminds us now, that caring for and administering to the poor should be at the core of all we do. Recall when the Lord said in Matthew, “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me; I was naked and you gave me clothing; I was ill and you cared for me; I was in prison and you visited me.” This is our foundation as we seek to embody mercy and justice to our fellow man and should be one of our major goals as a faith community. Many of our parish ministries provide for us an opportunity to do just as Jesus asked — to serve those most in need. As we move into the fall season, with Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas soon to follow, now is a good time for continued on page 7

n sus cartas, San Pablo a menudo comenzaba saludando a sus “hermanos y hermanas”. Cada vez que leo una de estas cartas, me recuerda que tú y yo somos verdaderamente hermanas y hermanos en el Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, pero especialmente aquí en nuestra parroquia. LIVING FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP
“We Have To Do The Most” T
he First Commandment is clear: “I am the Lord your God, and you shall not have other gods before me.” If we consider this commandment from the lens of financial stewardship, we simply cannot serve both God and money. “Our management of money and possessions is a First Commandment issue,” says Fr. Paul Key. “It is a preliminary principle that we cannot serve both God and money, and money is the number-one idol in our society of conspicuous consumption.” If we pause to consider this preliminary principle, that we cannot serve both God and money, we might ask ourselves a few questions. What would it look like to examine our priorities in light of how we spend our money? What would it look like to interrogate these spending habits and make changes? “In terms of the stewardship of money and possessions, we need to be clear about what the Bible tells us and the Biblical guidelines,” Fr. Paul says. In the Old Testament, we read that tithing came before the Law, as Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18-20 — “Melchizedek, King of Salem, brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. He blessed Abram… Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” “Tithing is clearly indicated as a fundamental action in the Old Testament, and Jesus affirms it repeatedly,” Fr. Paul says. “If Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek, which we read in Hebrews 7, and Abraham brought his 4
tithe to Melchizedek, then should we bring our tithe to the King of King and Lord of Lords?” In the Catholic sense, when we tithe, the basic guideline is that we give five percent to the parish, one percent to the diocese, and four percent to special causes — totaling 10 percent. While tithing or “first-mile giving” is what is required of us, there is “second-mile giving,” which is going beyond the required or the expected to give. The name for this kind of giving comes from Matthew 5:41 — “Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.” “If we want to be right with God, it seems to me we basically have to tithe, and any giving above 10 percent, we can call ‘second-mile giving’ and is to be commended,” Fr. Paul says. “I think it is important for us as Christians to simplify our lives as much as possible to give as much as possible.” continued on page 6

There are many ways for us to be intentional or even creative when it comes to second-mile giving. We can do small things like not spending as much on clothing, food or recreation, and giving that amount to a particular cause. We can read resources on financial stewardship like Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. “I think it is really important that we work from a budget and involve Christian financial principles in our ordering of things,” Fr. Paul says. “We become more effective when we plan wisely. My wife and I apply all of these and have found a great deal of joy in doing so.” On occasion we have found ourselves giving away up to 30% of our gross income. At different phases in our life, we can also discern other ways of giving such as larger sacrifices from our regular budget or even taking on a second job. “The enemies of God are so great and numer ous, we need to be intense and radical about how we organize our lives financially,” Fr. Paul says. “There might be time when, considering the work of the Lord, we take out of our retire-
ment. In a certain phase of our life, we might tithe on our estate.” There are some extra special areas that our second-mile giving could directly support, such as offering tuition support for children in Catholic school or supporting the building of a new church and a Christian education space. “The total cost for the Christian education space is $3.5 million, and we already have $1.6 million,” Fr. Paul says. “We’re looking forward to supporting Catholic education in our facility and possibly becoming a satellite school and assisting with homeschool education.” Fr. Paul is particularly grateful for how the faith community has given generously and grown in their faithful giving since he joined the parish. “It is my hope that we can be a model for the diocese of being a stewardship parish,” Fr. Paul says. “We have to maximize our giving to enable the ministry of the Lord, especially regarding education. We have to do the most that we can instead of the minimum.”

I am proud of our collective efforts in assisting and serving the poor, but I also know that we can do more. Many of us personally need to get involved in these efforts. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has a great love and regard for the poor and, like Jesus, he reminds us often of what we need to do. Pope Francis once said in a homily, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty.” Together, we can make a difference.

News from Our Parish:
St. Boniface Catholic Church Feeds the Poor
W
e have never had the opportunity to have a food bank or a way to provide food donations to the community. That all changed about mid-April, thanks to the hard work and connections of Raul and Tracy DeLaGaraza. Raul had been in touch with a Men’s Group, the Lila Lane Outreach/ Men’s Life Recovery Center in Athens, Texas. They have a large food bank — however, they also have a surplus of food. They are so gracious to bring that surplus to our little church in Chandler, Texas. We then dispense the food with an open-door policy — if you need it come, get it. Any extra that we have is donated to area churches. Early in July, the Men’s Group brought boxes of flowers. There were too many for us to use, so the remainder were taken to the Chandler Nursing Center — they were able to put flowers in every room. We are so thankful and blessed!

unca hemos tenido la oportunidad de tener un banco de alimentos o una forma de brindar donaciones de alimentos a la comunidad.
