How Can I Give Today?
My Fellow Parishioners,
I
would like to share with you my list of 10 ways to be a giver in these days that challenge us to be upbeat, or even to remain on an even keel. If we give effectively, we will spread and experience joy. 1. Give encouragement. Many folks are struggling as they adjust to a new normal, which keeps changing — but they are moving along, trying to do what is right and good. Encouragement helps us all to keep making good decisions and to give and find zest. 2. Give gratitude. Be grateful to God, to family and friends, and to professionals who are helping us through the pandemic. Find a way to express gratitude — maybe send a hand-written note. 3. Forgive others. We are all victims in one way or another. People who have hurt us are usually victims themselves. Holding on to the hurt or harboring resentment does no one any good. Start forgiving by praying for the one who has hurt you or a loved one. This is a good time to mend fences by expressing care and the desire to see beyond the rift. 4. Forgive yourself. During these days, many people report that memories of their own mean, foolish and hurtful actions are flooding them with a vengeance. If others have forgiven us, if God and the Church have forgiven us, if we would forgive someone who did to us what we cannot forgive ourselves for, well then, what good reason is there to withhold forgiving ourselves? 5. Give the gift of volunteer time. There are many needs out there for folks to share their time and talents in one way or another. We know this in our Church, our neighborhood, our places of work. In our bulletin, we regularly invite folks to volunteer, to make another person’s life healthier and safer. Seldom do we volunteer as a solitary person — we can make great friends among our fellow volunteers. 6. Give financial support. These, of course, are uncertain times. Many charitable organizations are offering assistance to those in need. Our Church and parish face the challenge of managing our 2
budget while there are less people attending Mass and giving less of their treasure. There is a joy and a sense of peace when we give, when we trust God to provide enough for our wellbeing, and when we can see the good our generosity and sacrifices are accomplishing. 7. Give the gift of self-care. Balance exercise, healthy meals, rest, staying in touch with family and friends, intellectual stimulation, finding ways to enjoy life with virtual assistance, staying safe and keeping others safe. Find ways to enjoy nature. Self-care is important so we can be our best self in our relationships with others and as we encounter life’s challenges. 8. Give time to listen to God. Trust that God has words of encouragement, direction, clarification and peace for us. We pray speaking to God from our hearts, but also by listening to the Divine Message which penetrates our hearts. 9. Give the gift of petitionary prayer. Petitionary prayer works — the result is not always that our will is done, but petitionary prayer leads us to look for God, to trust in God, and to compassionately put those for whom we pray in the hands of God. Petitionary prayer unites us with those for whom we are praying and those who are also praying. 10. Give the gift of the desire to give. If we start every day with the desire and the question “How can I give today?” we will have a spirit of dedication and build on the joy of giving day by day as we gradually work our way through this pandemic and all the fears, issues and problems which have surfaced. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Paul R. Key

Cómo puedo dar hoy?
?
Mis compañeros feligreses,
M

Through Pivotal Moments in their Faith Formation

aptism, First Communion, Confirmation and Quinceañera — each of these events marks an important moment in a child’s spiritual journey. “Each one draw us back to Jesus, making a greater commitment to Him,” says Fr. Paul Key. “They also involve specific promises by the individual, as well as the parents, godparents, and the surrounding community. These are specific promises to God, involving an affirmation of the faith which also includes a renunciation of the world and the devil.” Traditionally, these sacraments and celebrations are spread out from a child’s infancy to teenage years, strengthening them as they travel from spiritual childhood, adolescence and, finally, adulthood. Doing this effectively, however, requires more than the day of the event itself. Children need their parents and godparents to walk the journey with them on a daily basis, helping them grow in faith as prom-
ised during the child’s Baptism. Fr. Paul says that’s why they remain pivotal moments not only for the child, but also for us as a Church. They serve as a kind of call to action for us to each do our part to “train the youth in the way they should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Not only does this mean showing up at key moments in our children’s lives, but it also means taking time to form ourselves so that we can truly walk the walk. “You can’t provide any sort of real modeling unless you’ve learned first what you need to be,” Fr. Paul says. “That’s why I think adults need to have some sort of ongoing faith formation.” There are many ways for parents and godparents to do that here at St. Boniface. First and foremost, they must attend Sunday Mass and pay attention to the homilies. Families are also encouraged to take Fr. Paul’s homily notes home, using them as a springboard for further discussion. Secondly,

Paul says. “I think if we can really focus on these key moments, together we can really provide a lot of support to the kids.”

THE RANKS AND HONOR THE
A
Dignity of Life in October
ll Catholics are summoned to action — this month, and beyond. October is Respect Life Month. And as we face the looming culture of death, we are all summoned to action. An apostolic exhortation by Pope St. John Paul II, titled Ecclesia in America, described this culture of death’s effects on the “powerless” within American society: “I am thinking here of unborn children, helpless victims of abortion; the elderly and the incurably ill, subjected at times to euthanasia; and the many other people relegated to the margins of society by consumerism and materialism. Nor can I fail to mention the unnecessary recourse to the death penalty… Faced with this distressing reality, the Church community intends to commit itself all the more to the defense of the culture of life” (Ecclesia in America 63). Respect Life Month is the perfect time to prayerfully examine our consciences in light of these critical issues, which directly violate the dignity of the human person. This includes not only the evil of abortion, but also euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, capital punishment, and contraception — all of which are vital contributors to the pervasive culture of death. So we must individually ask ourselves, “Do I, in my personal, day-to-day choices, respect life? If so, do I boldly proclaim this belief or merely stand idle? Do I exercise my right to vote and support candidates who promote a culture of life? Am I known within my home, family, and/or workplace as someone that respects life?” As with every movement of a Christian heart towards goodness, it is imperative that our efforts issue forth from a prayerful foundation. The work of the Holy Spirit allows us to receive the zeal necessary to promote the sanctity of human life, even in the face of suffering. This October, please pray for a revitalization of the culture of life. Every night, as a family, meditate on the prayer from John Paul II’s encyclical Evangelium Vitae. As you pray, allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with apostolic boldness, and ask the Lord to guide your heart towards ways in which you can personally contribute to the culture of life. The call is clear, the stakes are set, and all Catholics are summoned to action. How will you respond?

Pope St. John Paul II’s Prayer for the Revitalization of the Culture of Life O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. — Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae

— Papa Juan Pablo II, Evangelium Vitae 7
