n the hustle and bustle of the weeks preceding Christmas Day, it is often difficult in this secular world to pause and recognize Advent as a period of preparation, prayerfulness, and the renewal of faith.

And yet, taking the time to evaluate our lives, repent and turn fully back to the Lord is exactly what the Advent season is all about, for only in doing so can we truly prepare our hearts and souls for the coming of Christ.

“Advent is a time to get our lives together and to plan our resolutions for the New Year,” says Fr. Paul Key. “It is really a season for preparing for the Second Coming of Christ, and daily we should be living in the light of Christ’s Second Coming. Therefore, Advent is both a time of examination of conscience, repentance, and redirection, as well as encouragement.”

Traditionally, Catholics have refrained from decorating for or celebrating Christmas until

My Fellow Parishioners,

ou already know that our parish is committed to living as intentional disciples of Christ through the holistic practice of stewardship. What you may not know is that one of our inspirations and mentors is the late Msgr. Thomas McGread of the Diocese of Wichita.

Who was Msgr. McGread?

Msgr. McGread was a humble, servant priest who created a model for how stewardship should be practiced — both here and in many Catholic parishes across the country. What began simply with Msgr.

McGread applying his stewardship principles at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Wichita — where he served as pastor for 31 years — has become a way of life for our parish family and for thousands of Catholics around the nation.

With such an incredible blueprint from this visionary priest, how could we go wrong?

We have truly embraced stewardship here at St. Boniface, and for that, I am blessed and grateful.

From the beginning, however, the question “What’s in it for us?” had to be on our minds as our efforts to educate parishioners and promote the stewardship way of life were introduced.

At first, “What’s in it for us?” seemed to center on what people were willing to do to give back to God as part of practicing their faith and living as disciples of Jesus Christ. While this is important, there is so much more to it.

The truth is, “What’s in it for us?” is really about “What’s in it for you?”

“What’s in it for you?” perhaps is best explained as one simple principle — cultivating a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

When Christ calls us to discipleship, He is also calling us to be faithful stewards of our time, talent, and treasure. Our gratitude for these gifts is best expressed by giving a portion of each back to God. Thus, stewardship becomes a way of life that is also the way to holiness. Our relationship with Christ is what we get in return.

As your pastor, it is my personal experience, in

my life and observing the lives of others that there are a very large number of blessings that come from developing the lifestyle of stewardship. We grow in virtues. We grow in self-worth every time we serve others. And, finally, God actually promises us material blessings if we tithe (See Malachi 3:6-12) Our efforts as a parish to promote the spiritual benefits of active stewardship are designed to foster a deeper relationship with God for all of us. Membership in a parish family should encourage, support, and celebrate that relationship with the living God, first and foremost. Everything else flows from that.

If we are not focused on our relationship with God, then what will define our spirituality? If we have embraced the blessings of stewardship as a practical way of being the disciples we are called to be, we will in turn know a deeper relationship with Christ.

We celebrate Thanksgiving this month, which truly is a stewardship holiday since stewardship begins with an attitude of gratitude. I am truly thankful for all that is done here at St. Boniface, and for the many parishioners willing to do so much.

In closing, let me share one final thought to help you realize the gift that our parish is to each and every one of us.

Be grateful for all you have.

Be generous in giving something back to God. Be faithful stewards, and you will have done both.

That is what’s in it for you, and in turn, that is what’s in it for us!

And don’t forget — God has been doing this for centuries. We’re just the latest and most fortunate recipients.

a saben que nuestra parroquia está comprometida a vivir como discípulos intencionales de Cristo a través de la práctica integral de la Mayordomía. Lo que quizás no sepan es que una de nuestras inspiraciones y mentores es el difunto Mons. Thomas McGread de la Diócesis de Wichita. ¿Quién fue Mons. McGread?

Mons. McGread fue un sacerdote humilde y siervo que creó un modelo de cómo se debe practicar la Mayordomía, tano aquí como en muchas parroquias católicas de todo el país. Lo que comenzó simplemente con Mons. McGread aplicando sus principios de Mayordomía en la parroquia St. Francis of Assisi en Wichita, donde se desempeñó como pastor durante 31 años, se ha convertido en una forma de vida para nuestra familia parroquial y para miles de católicos en todo el país.

La verdad es: “¿Qué ganamos nosotros?” se trata realmente de “¿Qué ventajas ofrece?” “¿Qué sacas tú de esto?” quizás se puede explicar mejor como un principio simple: cultivar una relación más profunda con Jesucristo.

Cuando Cristo nos llama al discipulado, también nos llama a ser administradores fieles de nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro. Nuestra gratitud por estos dones se expresa mejor dando una porción de cada uno a Dios.

Así es que la Mayordomía se convierte en una forma de vida que es también el camino a la santidad. Nuestra relación con Cristo es lo que obtenemos a cambio.

Como pastor, es mi experiencia personal, en mi vida y al observar la vida de los demás, que hay una gran cantidad de bendiciones que provienen del desarrollo del estilo de vida de la Mayordomía. Crecemos en virtu-

des. Crecemos en autoestima cada vez que servimos a los demás. Y, finalmente, Dios realmente nos promete bendiciones materiales si diezmamos (Ver Malaquías 3: 6-12).

Celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias este mes, que verdaderamente es un día festivo de mayordomía, ya que la mayordomía comienza con una actitud de gratitud. Estoy realmente agradecido por todo lo que se hace aquí en St. Boniface, y por los muchos feligreses que están dispuestos a hacer tanto.

Celebrating the Patroness of the Americas:

Our Lady of Guadalupe N

early 500 years ago in Mexico, the Blessed Mother appeared to a Mexican peasant farmer named Juan Diego, speaking his native tongue, and asking him to implore the bishop to build a church on Tepeyac Hill, the site of a former Aztec temple, that she might intercede for the suffering of her children in Mexico.

In order to convince the bishop, the Blessed Mother sent the humble man with a sign, a cloak, or “tilma” filled with beautiful roses, which, in the dead of winter, could only be explained by a miracle. When Juan Diego arrived to give the message and the roses to the bishop, the flowers fell from his tilma, revealing a miraculous image of the Virgin Mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In 1946, Pope Pius XII, decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe to be “Patroness of all the Americas” and her feast day is celebrated annually on Dec. 12, all over the world, and in a special way here at St. Boniface.

The people of this region had venerated for a long time on Tepeyac Hill a deity called Tonantzin (which means “Our beloved mother”). Because of this it was easier to understand the message carried by the Virgin Mary as the true Mother of God and our Mother. She gave this specific name, “Ever virgin Holy Mother of Guadalupe”, to Juan Bernardino, uncle of Juan Diego, when she appeared to him to heal him of his sickness.

“In the miraculous apparition, [Our Lady of Guadalupe] appeared as the Mother full of Guadalupana symbolisms, a primary means to transmit different messages to the various local peoples who would understand these symbols.

The Mother of God did not come to impose something foreign by as one of them. This image, in traditional Indian dress as a sign of God’s love for His mestizo people, led to millions of conversions to the Catholic faith,” says Sister Maria Concepcion [Sr. Conchita], who coordinated our Hispanic Ministry.

These symbols include: Her hair: It was loose which signaled virginity. She is both Virgin and Mother.

Her face: It is brown, oval and in an attitude of deep prayer.

Her appearance is sweet, fresh, friendly, reflecting love and tender care, additionally great strength.

Her hands: Her hands are together in a sign of concentration, in deep prayer. Her right hand is more white while the left is brown which can symbolize the union of the two different races.

Her pregnancy: The form given to her abdomen shows that she is close to giving birth.

Age: She represents a young woman of approximately 18-20 years.

Height: She is about 1.43 meters.

Her belt: The belt shows she is pregnant. The way it is presented represents that this birth marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. This shows that with Jesus Christ a new era for the new world is beginning.

The rays: The Virgin is surrounded by golden rays, which forms a luminous halo. This communicates that she is the Mother of light, the Sun, the Child of the Son, the true God. The moon: The Virgin of Guadalupe is standing on the moon. The word, Mexico, means in native continued on back cover

ace casi 500 años en México, la Santísima Madre se le apareció a un campesino mexicano llamado Juan Diego, hablando en su lengua materna, y le pidió que le implorara al obispo que construyera una iglesia en el cerro Tepeyac, el sitio de un antiguo templo azteca, para que ella pudiera interceder por el sufrimiento de sus hijos en México.

Para convencer al obispo, la Santísima Virgen envió al humilde hombre con un signo, un manto o “tilma” lleno de hermosas rosas, que, en pleno invierno, sólo podía explicarse por un milagro.

Cuando llegó Juan Diego para entregar el mensaje y las rosas al obispo, las flores cayeron de su tilma, revelando una imagen milagrosa de la Virgen Madre, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

En 1946, el Papa Pío XII decretó a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe como “La Patrona de todas las Américas” y su fiesta se celebra anualmente el 12 de diciembre en todo el mundo y de manera especial aquí en San Bonifacio.

La gente de esa región había venerado durante mucho tiempo en el cerro Tepeyac a una deidad llamada Tonantzin (que significa “Nuestra amada madre”). Issues like my age, physical limitations, and the current crisis prevent me from being active in the parish. Should I still turn in a Commitment Card?

Yes! The first section of the card — Stewardship of Time — is the most important because it allows you to make commitments to prayer. Even if you can’t join a ministry or make it to Mass on Sunday, you can still pray for our parish. Your spiritual support has tremendous value in the eyes of God.

Si problemas como mi edad, limitaciones físicas y la crisis actual me impiden participar activamente en la parroquia. ¿Debería entregar una Tarjeta de compromiso? ¡Sí! his has most certainly been a trying and unusual year, as we have navigated through uncharted waters. In the face of great uncertainty or difficulty, it is easy to become complacent. Yet, this is not what God calls us to do. We are called to live stewardship as a way of life — in the good, bad or uncertain times. In moments of trial, God raises up saints!

Our Stewardship Renewal reminds us that God’s gifts never stop being poured out. In turn, we never should have reason to stop thanking Him. So, let us take this Stewardship Renewal as an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with God in the midst of our rapidly changing world.

Preguntas Y Respuestas Sobre Nuestra Renovación Anual De Mayordomía ste ha sido sin duda un año difícil e inusual, ya que hemos navegado por aguas desconocidas.

Ante una gran incertidumbre o dificultad, es fácil volverse complaciente. Sin embargo, esto no es lo que Dios nos llama a hacer. Estamos llamados a vivir la Mayordomía como una forma de vida, en tiempos buenos, malos o inciertos. ¡En momentos de prueba, Dios levanta a los santos!

Nuestra Renovación de Mayordomía nos recuerda que los dones de Dios nunca dejan de ser derramados. A su vez, nunca deberíamos tener motivos para dejar de agradecerle. Entonces, aprovechemos esta Renovación de la Mayordomía como una oportunidad para fortalecer nuestra relación con Dios en medio de nuestro mundo que cambia rápidamente.

One time I turned in a card, but no one ever called me when I signed up for a ministry.

If this happened in the past, please forgive us! And don’t give up on filling out your Commitment Card! We have a very good plan to call every person interested in joining a new ministry. If for some reason the ministry leader does not call you within four weeks of turning in your card, let the parish office know.

What if I can’t fulfill my financial pledge?

While our pledge is not a “contract,” we should all make a good-faith effort to fulfill it. The biggest reason many people don’t fulfill their pledge is that they attend Mass at another parish when they go on vacation, attend a wedding, etc. If you’re out of town, just make up for the missed Sunday when you write your next check to the parish. Using your envelopes is a good way to see which Sundays you missed.

the fourth week of Advent. Fr. Paul encourages parishioners to observe this period of self-examination in the same way. He also hopes that all members of St. Boniface will come to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation when it is offered in our parish.

During December, the Church also celebrates two important feast days related to the Blessed Mother — her Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8 and Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12. As Catholics evaluating the ways we are living out our faith daily, we could ask for no better example.

“There is a strong emphasis on the presence and the graciousness of the Blessed Mother during Advent,” Fr. Paul says. “She said, ‘Yes, let it be done to me according to Your Word,’ and that ought to be the way that we think — ‘Let me do it according to Your Word.’ She is there as a symbol of both holiness and chastity.”

Let us stay focused on the incredible gift of time that Advent offers each of us, so that we may enter more fully into the work of salvation.

“First Timothy 2:4 tells us God desires that all men be saved,” Fr. Paul says. “Nothing imperfect can enter heaven, so a season like this is a gift because it allows us to prepare — to get our lives together so we might be saved, with the initiatives of Christ who gave His life and of His mother, Mary. It makes salvation possible.”

The angel: An angel is at the feet of the Guadalupana with the appearance of just having finished flight, with coloring very similar to the Mexican bird that Juan Diego remembered who came announcing the apparition of the Virgin.

The celebrations for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe begin 46 days before the feast itself. Cultural celebrations such as Our Lady of Guadalupe are an opportunity for people of all different cultures to come together, celebrating the beauty and diversity of our faith. All parishioners are encouraged to come and join in the festivities surrounding the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“It’s an opportunity for all to experience the Hispanic faith and culture,” Sr. Conchita says.

Las celebraciones para la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe comienzan 46 días antes de la fiesta en sí, con la Hna.
