From the Desk of Monsignor

Dear friends of Catholic Owned, Roberto and Cathy are a young couple I recently met. They are happy and enthusiastic about their participation in the Latin Mass community. I usually speak with them during the time of fellowship after Mass on Sundays.

Considering that Wednesday of next week February 14th is St. Valentine's Day, I heard Cathy ask boyfriend Roberto, "Roberto, are you planning any special surprise for me on Valentine's Day?" The answer came in a split second, without hesitation Roberto said, “Yes of course, we are going to Ash Wednesday Mass.”

This year Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th, a popular day in the American society to celebrate love and friendship. I agree with the young man Roberto, who certainly has very firm convictions. We should not miss Mass on Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent 2024.

Before a brief reflection on the importance of Ash Wednesday, it is worth mentioning that from 05

three weeks preceding Ash Wednesday, (approximately 70 days before Easter) the Church has been preparing to begin Lent with Mass, prayer and meditation.

The forty days fast before Easter was officially instituted by the Council of Nicaea in 325, although the practice of fasting dates back to the beginning of Christianity. The idea of a 40 day period of penance and fasting most likely originated as a reminder of Our Lord's 40 days in the desert fasting and praying.

On Ash Wednesday the Church reminds us of our human frailty and calls us to conversion. We are called to detach from sin and to cooperate with God's grace in order to rise to a holier life with Christ. He suffered death on the cross but triumphantly rose from the dead and sits at the right hand of God the Father.

The norms for Ash Wednesday are to pray fervently, abstain from meat and practice a moderate fasting. It is recommended to attend Mass that day but it is not an obligation, nevertheless St Valentine's celebrations can be postponed for another occasion.

Floriani Sacred Music

Nonprofit Revitalizing Sacred Music in America music, as they have grown so proficient as to perform, often while conducting themselves, for Masses, weddings and concerts. The choristers’ own love for sacred music is infectious to those who hear them, almost inevitably moving the heart and soul of the listener.

In the Vatican II document, “Sacrosanctum Concilium,” sacred music is said to be “a treasure of inestimable value, greater than that of any other art.” Our mission is to inspire a renaissance of sacred beauty through the music of the Church, whereby hearts might be able to encounter Christ, the Source of Beauty.

St. Florian is our patron, from whom we take our name. He is Giorgio’s Confirmation saint, and is attributed by Giorgio to have saved him from nearly drowning. Giorgio did not know when he chose him as his saint that St. Florian is the patron of drowning victims!

Our favorite quote would be the one Floriani Sacred Music is dedicated to serving the Church and saving the mentioned above from Sacrosanctum culture through the beauty of sacred music. We believe in the power of Concilium, as it establishes the preSacred Beauty to awaken and deepen a desire for Christ and His eminence of sacred music, as an art, in the liturgy.

By singing for liturgies, performing educational concerts, and teaching, both in person and remotely with our online course, Gregorian Chant Academy, and our Chant School Podcast, we introduce people of all musical backgrounds to the Church’s rich heritage of liturgical music.

Giorgio Navarini founded Floriani originally as a barbershop group as a student at Thomas Aquinas College, where he met Thomas, Joe and Graham, each of whom sang in his choir at different times.

Eventually, they moved on from barbershop to sacred music, and realized it was this which they truly loved to sing. Years later, after they’d all long graduated, they reconnected, quit their jobs, and moved to Arizona to begin Floriani as a non-profit men’s vocal ensemble with a mission to revitalize sacred music throughout the world.

Floriani is proud to have taught and developed a devoted children’s choir in Phoenix, AZ for almost three years. These young choristers have proved to be a remarkable testimony to the accessibility of sacred

The Fund for Vocations

Nonprofit Unlocking Vocations Nationwide Studies show that around 1/3 of those who want to makes vows as priests, friars and sisters are unable to due to student loans, since candidates must be debt-free to enter formation.

The Fund for Vocations eliminates the obstacle of student loan debt so that no vocation is lost.

By actively working to alleviate the debt burden for candidates, we have opened the door for over 300 future religious, and are actively supporting members of almost 100 traditional communities, including Dominicans, CFRs, Sisters of Life, Benedictines, ICKSP, and so many more.

When a young Catholic is accepted to formation with a traditional religious order but cannot enter because of their student loans, we make their monthly payments out of a donation-based fund.

We keep paying on a monthly basis until they take their final vows, after which we pay off the remainder within five years. If they discern out, they simply pick up where we left off.

The Fund for Vocations started as a mom-andpop apostolate of Corey and Katherine Huber, two very generous and faithful Catholics. They discovered a huge cause of the vocations crisis to be the burden of student loan debts. Most orders will not even allow someone to enter formation with loans. They created a fund out of which to award grants to young Catholics to support a new generation of religious. When they received a flood of applications, they expanded and fundraised to create a 501(c)3.

Many of our grant recipients would attest that they would not have been able to become religious without our help. One Mercedarian sister, Sr. Yvelyne Marie, HMSS, wrote, “I am beyond grateful for your support, not only financially but spiritually. I would not be a Religious today, if not for you.

Our Catholic Faith is at the absolute center of everything we do. Our nonprofit is very streamlined and has only two full time employees.

Mary Radford, our executive director, has a quote in her email signature from St. Catherine of Siena: “If you are what you should be, you will set the world on fire!” Our communications director, Elizabeth Latham has one from St. Ambrose: “It is not enough just to wish well; we must also do well.” Both are deeply devoted Catholics in love with their faith.

Who is your favorite saint?

Mother Teresa, because of her dedication to her work, great love for God and discipline. She continues to be a great course of inspiration for me both personally and professionally.

I am a returning Catholic attending mass worship at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Tequesta, FL. I have come to greatly appreciate the contributions of Catholicism in the realm of mental health. In a properly balanced order, it can be a great compliment to the struggles we face in daily life.

I am a licensed clinical therapist in Virginia (LSCW) and Florida (LCSW) with over 22 years of experience working as a counselor and life coach. I help my clients become the very best version of themselves. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, and substance abuse related issues. I also helped many people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. My goal in life is to assist any person/s in need of recovery or growth.

I focus on inner strength and self exploration by providing counseling services to individuals, couples and families.

What inspired you to start your business?

My father was an addiction counselor who started an organization called DARE (Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Enterprise).

While working on “Mass of the Ages Part 3”, I, Adrián, had the honor and pleasure of planning and coordinating a film shoot in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. While there, we were able to interview a wonderful family. This family was humble and incredibly faithful. I was astounded by their incredible generosity and charity despite having so little. In this case, despite the interview being a professional endeavor, the family became great friends of mine and they continue to serve as wonderful examples to me.

The Catholic faith informs everything we do at Alva Leon. It is a real blessing to be able to have worked with a wide variety of Catholic Clients like Mass of the Ages, OnePeterFive, FOCUS, Tridentine Brewing, the Knights of Columbus and more. In addition to corporate and cinematic clients, it is also incredible to do work for private individuals like capturing moments like weddings and confirmations. The way business is conducted is always with the aim to be in line with Church teaching and morals. e. Favorite saint, devotion, prayer or quote. A little sharing to inspire our readers and help them connect with you on a personal level. St. Maria Goretti and St. George are my favorite Saints, precisely because they are both so different, but both provide such incredible examples of bravery and purity. In particular, St. George was there for me when I first started to become interested in the Faith as I explored the Old Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona. I would create a Youtube video that was a reading of the original story of St. George, and this video would become one of my most watched and beloved. Later on, I would learn about St. Maria Goretti and she would become a great friend and confidant for me, and was even able to go to see all the places she lived in in Italy.

Truly both of these great saints are sources of comfort for me and have helped me through their intercessions in incredible ways throughout the years.

Students For Life

Florida International University Serving families at FIU

More than 56,000 students attend Florida International University in bustling Miami, Florida.

Until recently, out of over 400 registered student organizations on campus, there was no organization solely dedicated to pro-life issues until, in January 2023, a small group of students formed a Students for Life chapter at FIU. Students for Life of America is a national organization that equips students to stand up for life, make lasting change on campuses, and support women in their community. There are over 1,400 student groups across the country, serving middle schools, high schools, and universities in every state. Since our humble beginnings, SFL @FIU has grown enormously to reach over 125 members in just 11 months.

We are very active on campus, tabling weekly, collecting donations for pregnancy resource centers, hosting guest speakers, attending political rallies, and more. Our pro-life initiatives have even attracted the attention of The Rolling Stone, Students for Life of America’s blog, and local news channels. But by far our proudest accomplishment is the student baby supply pantry started in September 2023. As an initiative of Standing with You, a Students for Life program dedicated to helping women in need, we hope the pantry alleviates the financial burden that often comes with being a new mom in school.

One of the most common reasons for justifying abortion is the economic hardship young parents face. Providing free diapers, wipes, baby formula, and other items is a practical, yet important step in the fight against abortion. Providing these supplies on campus also helps destigmatize being a young, single mom in college, another reason that pushes women to turn to abortion. However, sustaining the pantry has proved to be a challenge. Over a dozen student moms regularly visit the pantry. We donate hundreds of dollars worth of supplies, and they’re gone within a week. We have collected over 3,000 diapers, 200 packs of wipes, 76 bottles of shampoo, and more. And still, we find we are not able to provide enough for the demand of new and expecting parents on campus. For this reason, we are grateful for any support you may be able to offer! Whether it’s cash donations or physical items, we are grateful for any help!

It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. For some, simply the understanding that we have the same belief system and worldview is an essential element in building the trust necessary for a successful therapeutic experience. For others, prayer and the sacraments are very present as part of our healing process. Every therapist uses certain techniques and modalities that identify different agents of change for the client. For me, in my work, the Holy Spirit is always the agent of change The Rosary has always been a great source of peace for me. Lenten Preparations

Quadragesima is the Latin name for this liturgical season of penance, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Spanning the forty days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, excluding Sundays (which are not penitential during Lent or any other season) the season comes from the forty days that Our Lord spent in the desert fasting and overcoming the temptations of the devil before His Passion.

We too are called to focus our efforts during this specific season upon fasting, abstaining, giving alms and mortifying ourselves with a renewed focus on The Four Last Things, Death, Judgement, Heaven, and Hell.

The Church prescribes the schedule of fasting, abstinence and Holy Days of Obligation during the season of Lent. It is the season during which we must receive at least one confession during the year, though clearly more often is necessary for most of us poor sinners. It is also the preparation for us to walk Passiontide alongside Our Lord Jesus Christ and Our Blessed Mother, who accompanied Him all the way to Calvary.

In addition to what is required, we can and in most cases should take up additional mortification practices during the preparations for the arduous season of Passiontide ahead. According to St. Louis de Montfort, mortification is “ "the deliberate restraint that one places on natural impulses in order to make them increasingly subject to sanctification through obedience to reason illumined by faith." He viewed these self-imposed practices as an appropriate manner in which one can answer the call to take up one’s cross and follow Jesus, as He stated in Matthew 16:24. Centuries of tradition confirm the validity of such practices, during the Lenten season as well as outside of it.

For example, St. Clare’s strict rule of poverty exemplified the concept of mortifying oneself in all things. In addition to following the specifics of Franciscan poverty, she took additional practices upon herself joyfully. She was known to save the most difficult work of the convent for herself, and she even crafted garments of horse hair for herself to wear under her habit. The extremely scratchy and itchy material she chose to wear against her skin was just one example of how she voluntarily mortified herself in order to grow in holiness. The spiritual fruits of this lifestyle cannot be overstated-- the miracles for her canonization took a mere six days to be examined, and the process was completed in two years following her death.

While horse hair may not be readily available for crafting uncomfortable garments for today’s saints-in-themaking, mortification opportunities abound. In the modern world, comforts and conveniences give us plenty of opportunity to choose the harder path. Some less common ideas worth considering are taking cold showers, electing to wear less beautiful clothing made of linen or other simple materials, not using salt in the food we eat, sleeping without a pillow or on the floor, not complaining about difficult moments in our day, and taking on the chores of another person in the family. Such mortifications and sufferings can and should always be offered for specific intentions, and offering them for others instead of ourselves is an additional mortification

we can take on.

In addition to “giving something up,” it is important to take on additional works as well. These should be in addition to our normal prayer and devotional practices.

Whether a Chaplet, the Seven Penitential Psalms, the Seven Sorrows Rosary, or Prayer Before a Crucifix, take some time this week to select your prayers for the season.

Another element to enriching your faith during this season is a devotional reading plan.

Whether something specific to Lent like St. Thomas Aquinas’ Meditations for Lent, or something focused on Calvary, like St. Anselm’s The Passion of Christ Through the Eyes of Mary, reading devotional content is an important practice to adopt during Lent. Be encouraged, because it doesn’t have to be more than you can handle-- pick something to try for this year and see how you do.

One less-shared element in our Lenten sacrifices that we’d be remiss to leave out is the necessity for them to remain private. It truly is about an internal spiritual growth and growing in closeness to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, not about comparing one’s sacrifices to that of another. In case pride is an issue, the secrecy is yet another mortification to offer up.

Our last recommendation is to add a weekly Adoration to your schedule, during Lent and even beyond.

Of course discussing one’s planned Lenten journey with a spiritual director is encouraged.

Ultima Verba

Ash Wednesday marks the official beginning of Lent, and also serves as a reminder of our own mortality, calling to mind the traditional devotion of Memento Mori. Indeed, we shall pass from this earth, and we must be ready when that day comes. The Church helps remind us of this reality with this liturgical season, which is a blessing in a modern society that otherwise avoids, minimizes and sanitizes death.

Beginning with this sobering reminder, the Lenten season offers us many opportunities for sanctification and spiritual growth so that we may be at least somewhat able to accompany Our Lord to Golgotha, the place of the skull.

There, we must confront our own sin, death, and ultimate destruction, with the only hope to be saved being the unimaginable Mercy that flows 31

from the Pierced Heart of the Savior.

Confronting such matters is not so easy and we must rely on grace. Keeping at the forefront the Four Last Things- Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell- we can reflect on Ecclesiastes 7:40: "In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." The Sacraments are a tremendous source of help when facing these difficult realities, and can be relied upon to supply the graces necessary.

When we receive the ashes on February 14, the priest will speak the words from Genesis 3:19: “Meménto, homo, quia pulvis es, et in púlverem revertéris (Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return.)”

May the end of our earthly lives remind and inspire us to live as we must in total reliance upon Our Lord, no matter the struggle or the cost.
