January 25, Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul

Today’s feast is celebrated in both the old and new calendars, and it speaks to our humanity and the redemption that is possible with Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Saul of Tarsus, or Paul (his Roman name), had remarkable intellect, was a scholar, lawyer, rabbi and Pharisee who had trained under Rabbi Gamaliel, a member of the Sanhedrin and one of the most respected Doctors of the Law at that time. The Pharisees saw perfect adherence to the 613 Jewish laws as the road to sanctity, and Saul was a zealous defender of this position.

When Our Lord came and challenged this approach and the Pharisees, Paul viewed Him as a threat to his way of believing and committed himself to the persecution of Christ’s followers, even against the advice of his teacher, who advised that the Christians should instead be ignored.

St. Stephen’s was the first martyrdom, and Saul oversaw it.

He then received permission to go beyond Jerusalem to arrest more Christians and bring them back to Jerusalem to make an example of them. On his way to Damascus, he encountered the Risen Christ and lost his vision.

Meanwhile, a disciple names Ananias was visited by Our Lord, who gave him an important mission. He informed Ananias that Paul would be arriving blind, and that Ananias would lay his hands on Paul, heal him and baptize him, as Paul was a chosen instrument for evangelization.

Ananias knew of Paul and was terrified of him, but did what Our Lord asked of him. Incredibly, after three days of darkness, Paul was healed and converted because of the obedience of one terrified, faithful disciple.

Following his conversion, God called St. Paul to Arabia and he spent at least two years praying, fasting and preparing for his ministry in the desert.

Then he returned to Jerusalem and met with St. Peter, who blessed him and sent him to 05

spread the Gospel.

Paul traveled for the rest of his life, and significantly molded the Mediterranean’s early Christian communities, establishing churches and teachers who could lead in his absence. Paul’s ministry is specifically set apart from that of the other Apostles because of his message that the Gospel is for Gentiles and Jews alike. For this reason, he is often referred to as the Apostle to the Gentiles.

Paul’s letters to the churches that he established make up over one-fourth of the New Testament, more than any other biblical author, and the impact of his ministry on the Gentiles can certainly be observed throughout history. He truly is the greatest missionary in Church history, and is regarded very closely with St. Peter himself, even buried close together following their martyrdoms.

It is said that the beginning of Paul’s conversion occurred with St. Stephen’s dying words, calling out to God for mercy for his persecutors. Indeed, the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church, and St. Paul is a powerful example of this ever-present truth.

The Fund for Vocations

Nonprofit Unlocking Vocations Nationwide Studies show that around 1/3 of those who want to makes vows as priests, friars and sisters are unable to due to student loans, since candidates must be debt-free to enter formation.

The Fund for Vocations eliminates the obstacle of student loan debt so that no vocation is lost.

By actively working to alleviate the debt burden for candidates, we have opened the door for over 300 future religious, and are actively supporting members of almost 100 traditional communities, including Dominicans, CFRs, Sisters of Life, Benedictines, ICKSP, and so many more.

When a young Catholic is accepted to formation with a traditional religious order but cannot enter because of their student loans, we make their monthly payments out of a donation-based fund.

We keep paying on a monthly basis until they take their final vows, after which we pay off the remainder within five years. If they discern out, they simply pick up where we left off.

The Fund for Vocations started as a mom-andpop apostolate of Corey and Katherine Huber, two very generous and faithful Catholics. They discovered a huge cause of the vocations crisis to be the burden of student loan debts. Most orders will not even allow someone to enter formation with loans. They created a fund out of which to award grants to young Catholics to support a new generation of religious. When they received a flood of applications, they expanded and fundraised to create a 501(c)3.

Many of our grant recipients would attest that they would not have been able to become religious without our help. One Mercedarian sister, Sr. Yvelyne Marie, HMSS, wrote, “I am beyond grateful for your support, not only financially but spiritually. I would not be a Religious today, if not for you.

Our Catholic Faith is at the absolute center of everything we do. Our donors are inspired to give because they understand the importance of making the Church a light for the world, and the crucial role that Catholic religious play in that effort. We are changing the world and renewing a Christ-centered, vibrant Catholic culture by enabling passionate young religious to do God’s will.

Our nonprofit is very streamlined and has only two full time employees.

Mary Radford, our executive director, has a quote in her email signature from St. Catherine of Siena: “If you are what you should be, you will set the world on fire!” Our communications director, Elizabeth Latham has one from St. Ambrose: “It is not enough just to wish well; we must also do well.” Both are deeply devoted Catholics in love with their faith.

Who is your favorite saint?

Mother Teresa, because of her dedication to her work, great love for God and discipline. She continues to be a great course of inspiration for me both personally and professionally.

I am a returning Catholic attending mass worship at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Tequesta, FL. I have come to greatly appreciate the contributions of Catholicism in the realm of mental health. In a properly balanced order, it can be a great compliment to the struggles we face in daily life.

I am a licensed clinical therapist in Virginia (LSCW) and Florida (LCSW) with over 22 years of experience working as a counselor and life coach. I help my clients become the very best version of themselves. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, and substance abuse related issues. I also helped many people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. My goal in life is to assist any person/s in need of recovery or growth.

While working on “Mass of the Ages Part 3”, I, Adrián, had the honor and pleasure of planning and coordinating a film shoot in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. While there, we were able to interview a wonderful family. This family was humble and incredibly faithful. I was astounded by their incredible generosity and charity despite having so little. In this case, despite the interview being a professional endeavor, the family became great friends of mine and they continue to serve as wonderful examples to me.

The Catholic faith informs everything we do at Alva Leon. It is a real blessing to be able to have worked with a wide variety of Catholic Clients like Mass of the Ages, OnePeterFive, FOCUS, Tridentine Brewing, the Knights of Columbus and more. In addition to corporate and cinematic clients, it is also incredible to do work for private individuals like capturing moments like weddings and confirmations. The way business is conducted is always with the aim to be in line with Church teaching and morals. e. Favorite saint, devotion, prayer or quote. A little sharing to inspire our readers and help them connect with you on a personal level. St. Maria Goretti and St. George are my favorite Saints, precisely because they are both so different, but both provide such incredible examples of bravery and purity. In particular, St. George was there for me when I first started to become interested in the Faith as I explored the Old Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona. I would create a Youtube video that was a reading of the original story of St. George, and this video would become one of my most watched and beloved. Later on, I would learn about St. Maria Goretti and she would become a great friend and confidant for me, and was even able to go to see all the places she lived in in Italy.

Truly both of these great saints are sources of comfort for me and have helped me through their intercessions in incredible ways throughout the years.

Students For Life

Florida International University Serving families at FIU

More than 56,000 students attend Florida International University in bustling Miami, Florida.

Until recently, out of over 400 registered student organizations on campus, there was no organization solely dedicated to pro-life issues until, in January 2023, a small group of students formed a Students for Life chapter at FIU. Students for Life of America is a national organization that equips students to stand up for life, make lasting change on campuses, and support women in their community. There are over 1,400 student groups across the country, serving middle schools, high schools, and universities in every state. Since our humble beginnings, SFL @FIU has grown enormously to reach over 125 members in just 11 months.

We are very active on campus, tabling weekly, collecting donations for pregnancy resource centers, hosting guest speakers, attending political rallies, and more. Our pro-life initiatives have even attracted the attention of The Rolling Stone, Students for Life of America’s blog, and local news channels. But by far our proudest accomplishment is the student baby supply pantry started in September 2023. As an initiative of Standing with You, a Students for Life program dedicated to helping women in need, we hope the pantry alleviates the financial burden that often comes with being a new mom in school.

One of the most common reasons for justifying abortion is the economic hardship young parents face. Providing free diapers, wipes, baby formula, and other items is a practical, yet important step in the fight against abortion. Providing these supplies on campus also helps destigmatize being a young, single mom in college, another reason that pushes women to turn to abortion. However, sustaining the pantry has proved to be a challenge. Over a dozen student moms regularly visit the pantry. We donate hundreds of dollars worth of supplies, and they’re gone within a week. We have collected over 3,000 diapers, 200 packs of wipes, 76 bottles of shampoo, and more. And still, we find we are not able to provide enough for the demand of new and expecting parents on campus. For this reason, we are grateful for any support you may be able to offer! Whether it’s cash donations or physical items, we are grateful for any help!

It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. For some, simply the understanding that we have the same belief system and worldview is an essential element in building the trust necessary for a successful therapeutic experience. For others, prayer and the sacraments are very present as part of our healing process. Every therapist uses certain techniques and modalities that identify different agents of change for the client. For me, in my work, the Holy Spirit is always the agent of change The Rosary has always been a great source of peace for me. First Fridays Devotion

Last week, we continued our series on the Nine First Fridays Devotion, covering four more of the Twelve Promises. This week, we finish our overview of the Twelve Promises that Our Lord made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque regarding those who practice the Nine First Fridays and have a deep devotion to His Sacred Heart. The last four are: 9. I will bless every place where a picture of my heart shall be set up and honored.

10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

11. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.

12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant all to those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

The ninth promise speaks about setting up and honoring an image of the Sacred Heart. A special way to do this is the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in one’s home, place of business, parish, hospital, etc. Prayers and suggested practices for the Enthronement can be found HERE. While not all priests have the same gifts, there is something extraordinary about so many of them who are devoted to the Sacred Heart, and we can see it in how they are able to encounter the most hardened hearts and touch them. Just ask one of them for a story or two from their ministry or simply walking around in town, and they will surely have a story or two of a remarkable softening of hearts, or reaching a soul that was otherwise considered unreachable.

The eleventh promise carries a special meaning and warmth with it.
