From the Desk of Monsignor Dear brothers and sisters, "All of you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Him." (Galatians 3:27) These words from Saint Paul to the Galatians acquire a special significance during the Rite of Baptism when the child is clothed with a white garment and the priest says, “You have become a new creation and have clothed yourself in Christ, see in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity."

Saint Mathew (3:13-15) says Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan unto John to be baptized by him, but John protested saying, “I should be baptized by you, yet you come to me." He finally consented to our Lord's request when Jesus insisted.

If Jesus is the Son of God, the Second Divine Person of the Blessed Trinity who became man, why did He need to get baptized? He was free from all stains of sin. The voice of the Father was heard, “This is my Beloved Son." An old heresy called "Adoptionism" looked upon Jesus as the purely human "adopted" son of God". Such heresy still persists nowadays in some sects who misinterpret the New Testament and deny Christ's Divinity.

Jesus desired to commence His public ministry by an act of great humility, by receiving the Baptism of penance at the hands of His precursor, John the Baptist. We can never overestimate the importance of John the Baptist. All four Gospels begin the public ministry of Jesus with the preaching of this prophet.

John has a pivotal role in leading God's people from their ancestral hopes and promises found in the Old Testament to fulfillment in the Person of Jesus, therefore the New Testament can never be fully understood in depth, except in relation to the Old Testament.

Baptism is the first Sacrament of Christian Initiation and it is absolutely necessary for salvation. "I solemnly assure you, no one can enter into God's Kingdom without being begotten of water and spirit." (John 3:6) In Baptism, original sin is removed from the soul along with every other sin an adult may have committed during his lifetime. It infuses the gift of sanctifying grace. When sin is removed, grace flows and infused virtues of faith, hope and charity are received. We baptized Christians are living temples of the Holy Ghost, the true Church of Christ on Earth and heirs of His Kingdom.

Jesus wanted to share in our human nature in all things except sin, so we could share in His Divinity. He also wanted to teach us the necessity of sharing our lives with Him through the Sacraments. "Live on in me, as I do in you. I am the vine and you are the branches, whoever lives in me and I in him, will produce abundantly.”

(John 15:1-11) Jesus' own Baptism became the example of what we were to do and accomplish in his name.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Mathew 28:20) The Synoptic Gospels of Mathew, Mark and Luke, each in their own way, show the development by which Judaism reached a climatic moment in Jesus’ Baptism by John the Baptist. In the words of Pope Pius XI, “In baptism, we are also spiritually Semites...but the Sacrament of Baptism perfects what otherwise would have remained underdeveloped or isolated.”

O glorious Virgin Mary, you were the Chosen instrument to give us the Son of God, Jesus our Lord, ora pro nobis.

I pray before and after sessions privately. I believe God has put me on this earth to be a healer and helper for others who are struggling. My belief in Jesus Christ is catalyst for this mindset.

Who is your favorite saint?

Mother Teresa, because of her dedication to her work, great love for God and discipline. She continues to be a great course of inspiration for me both personally and professionally.

I am a returning Catholic attending mass worship at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Tequesta, FL. I have come to greatly appreciate the contributions of Catholicism in the realm of mental health. In a properly balanced order, it can be a great compliment to the struggles we face in daily life.

I am a licensed clinical therapist in Virginia (LSCW) and Florida (LCSW) with over 22 years of experience working as a counselor and life coach. I help my clients become the very best version of themselves. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, and substance abuse related issues. I also helped many people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. My goal in life is to assist any person/s in need of recovery or growth.

I focus on inner strength and self exploration by providing counseling services to individuals, couples and families.

What inspired you to start your business?

My father was an addiction counselor who started an organization called DARE (Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Enterprise).

While working on “Mass of the Ages Part 3”, I, Adrián, had the honor and pleasure of planning and coordinating a film shoot in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. While there, we were able to interview a wonderful family. This family was humble and incredibly faithful. I was astounded by their incredible generosity and charity despite having so little. In this case, despite the interview being a professional endeavor, the family became great friends of mine and they continue to serve as wonderful examples to me.

The Catholic faith informs everything we do at Alva Leon. It is a real blessing to be able to have worked with a wide variety of Catholic Clients like Mass of the Ages, OnePeterFive, FOCUS, Tridentine Brewing, the Knights of Columbus and more. In addition to corporate and cinematic clients, it is also incredible to do work for private individuals like capturing moments like weddings and confirmations. The way business is conducted is always with the aim to be in line with Church teaching and morals. e. Favorite saint, devotion, prayer or quote. A little sharing to inspire our readers and help them connect with you on a personal level. St. Maria Goretti and St. George are my favorite Saints, precisely because they are both so different, but both provide such incredible examples of bravery and purity. In particular, St. George was there for me when I first started to become interested in the Faith as I explored the Old Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona. I would create a Youtube video that was a reading of the original story of St. George, and this video would become one of my most watched and beloved. Later on, I would learn about St. Maria Goretti and she would become a great friend and confidant for me, and was even able to go to see all the places she lived in in Italy.

Truly both of these great saints are sources of comfort for me and have helped me through their intercessions in incredible ways throughout the years.

Students For Life

Florida International University Serving families at FIU

More than 56,000 students attend Florida International University in bustling Miami, Florida.

Until recently, out of over 400 registered student organizations on campus, there was no organization solely dedicated to pro-life issues until, in January 2023, a small group of students formed a Students for Life chapter at FIU. Students for Life of America is a national organization that equips students to stand up for life, make lasting change on campuses, and support women in their community. There are over 1,400 student groups across the country, serving middle schools, high schools, and universities in every state. Since our humble beginnings, SFL @FIU has grown enormously to reach over 125 members in just 11 months.

We are very active on campus, tabling weekly, collecting donations for pregnancy resource centers, hosting guest speakers, attending political rallies, and more. Our pro-life initiatives have even attracted the attention of The Rolling Stone, Students for Life of America’s blog, and local news channels. But by far our proudest accomplishment is the student baby supply pantry started in September 2023. As an initiative of Standing with You, a Students for Life program dedicated to helping women in need, we hope the pantry alleviates the financial burden that often comes with being a new mom in school.

One of the most common reasons for justifying abortion is the economic hardship young parents face. Providing free diapers, wipes, baby formula, and other items is a practical, yet important step in the fight against abortion. Providing these supplies on campus also helps destigmatize being a young, single mom in college, another reason that pushes women to turn to abortion. However, sustaining the pantry has proved to be a challenge. Over a dozen student moms regularly visit the pantry. We donate hundreds of dollars worth of supplies, and they’re gone within a week. We have collected over 3,000 diapers, 200 packs of wipes, 76 bottles of shampoo, and more. And still, we find we are not able to provide enough for the demand of new and expecting parents on campus. For this reason, we are grateful for any support you may be able to offer! Whether it’s cash donations or physical items, we are grateful for any help!

There was a moment that sparked the call in my heart to support couples as a way to work toward bettering our entire world. During my counseling studies in college, the professor described how the health of our society is based on the health of the family, and the health of the family is based on the health of the married couple. God has led every step of my path from before that moment until today.

Clients often are coming to me discouraged, defeated and hopeless. It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. And that example to young men? ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man must sharpen another’ (Proverbs 27:17).” -Thomas W., Hollis, NH Beginning the Saturday before Father’s Day in June 2021, 300 men gathered in Washington D.C. on four weeks notice to pray, witness, and proclaim the truth in the public square that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue,” but rather men have a grave responsibility to stand up and lead this movement to abolish the murder of our children and the exploitation of our sisters for profit.

The national event takes place multiple times each year in various U.S. cities and always begins with men gathering outside of an abortion killing center in prayer and raising up our touchstone of the four R’s: Face REALITY, Take RESPONSIBILITY, REPENT of what we have done and what we have not done, and make a new RESOLVE to do more and better, by God’s grace, than what we have done before. Men are encouraged to gather and march with their sons as an opportunity to train them up in virtue and authentic manhood.

The march is a prayerful, public witness and concludes with the Rally for Personhood that has developed to include women and daughters as an opportunity for entire families to stand up publicly together and provide a witness to the world of the equal dignity and complementarity of men and woman, as well as the beauty and goodness of marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, and family life.

The Simple Truth (Radio show and podcast) The National Men’s March to Abolish Abortion and Rally for Personhood flows forth from the Friday edition of The Simple Truth. The show is hosted by Jim Havens and airs Monday-Friday on The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network, including the popular iCatholicRadio app. The Friday show, Friday with Father, is co-hosted by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, and it was out of on- air discussions between Jim and Fr. Imbarrato that The Men’s March was sparked in 2021. Friday with Father on The Simple Truth continues to grow as a must listen every Friday for pro- lifers as it truly provides cutting edge pro-life commentary that you are not going to hear anywhere else and keeps the focus where it needs to be: the urgent need to abolish abortion now and pushing forward toward that goal.

First Fridays Devotion

Last week we offered a brief overview of the First Fridays Devotion. This week we will dive into some of the Twelve Promises that Our Lord made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque regarding those who practice the Nine First Fridays and have a deep devotion to His Sacred Heart. The first four are: 1. I will give them all of the graces necessary for their state of life.

2. I will establish peace in their homes.

3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

4. I will be their strength during life and above all during death.

The first promise assures devotees that they will receive all the graces necessary. The quantity and specific graces necessary can vary widely from person to person, and between the states of life as well. Our Lord shows us that we can trust He will provide whatever graces are necessary for our individual circumstances and vocation with this promise, which can be comforting in times of trial.

The second promises peace in the homes of devotees. In today’s world, peace in the home is something that seems to be less and less common. For the devout Catholic, it is certainly a goal and takes real work. To establish true peace, the surest way is through a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Despite sincere devotion, every Christian must take up their cross and follow Our Lord. This process often includes afflictions of all kinds. Not only that, but the world and sin bring additional suffering upon us. For all of these afflictions, Our Lord promises us comfort, a grace unearned that can assist us in persevering.

With the suffering of the afflictions comes a need for strength: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strength. We truly cannot do it on our own, and especially at the hour of our death, when we will be relying on Our Lord and Our Lady to persevere. Our Lord promises to be our strength...during death. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting source of help in the final battle.

Prayer of Adoration and Love to the Sacred Heart I adore Thee, I love Thee, I praise Thee, I cry to Thee for mercy, I return Thee thanks, I invoke Thee and confide myself entirely to Thee, O most holy and adorable Heart of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who for the salvation of us all didst submit Thyself to the rigors of Divine Justice, and didst voluntarily accept a birth accompanied with poverty, sorrow and contempt, a life of labor and contradictions, but of kindness for all, and a death full of opprobrium, confusion and sorrow, and who, in fine, for the love of those who wish to be saved through Thy divine charity, dost remain in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar to the end of time. Accomplish, O most adorable Heart, Thy wishes in my poor and miserable heart, which I dedicate and consecrate to Thee forever. Grant that it may live in the sentiments of love and gratitude which it owes Thee, that it may at all times breathe only Thy honor and glory, in order that it may expire in the waters of perfect contrition. Amen.

The next First Friday is February 2, 2024.

Throughout the Advent & Christmastide Seasons, sometimes we can focus on Our Lady and the Newborn King, and maybe even take lightly the vital role that St. Joseph had as foster father to the Son of God. It’s understandable as there is so much wonder to ponder as feast day after feast day unfolds, each with its own traditions and the magnitude of the birth of the Savior to soak in, too.

As the liturgical seasons change and the hidden years of the life of Our Lord unfold, it is there that so much of this remarkable saint’s work was done.

It’s also fitting as the new year has dawned and so many of us are getting into the work of the year ahead. It’s the perfect time to turn to this Guardian of the Holy Family.

St. Joseph was silent in Scripture, and God chose to speak to him in dreams. He was the provider for the Holy Family and was a skilled carpenter, a trade that he taught to the Son of God. He was an exceptionally

virtuous man, who married Our Lady knowing theirs would be a celibate marriage. He taught Our Lord so many things, including how to pray.

How much the Father trusted St. Joseph! First, with His Mother, the one He created for His Son. She was certainly vulnerable, but with St. Joseph, she was safe. God also trusted St. Joseph with His Son, Our Lord, in His most vulnerable stages of life. The entire of Salvation History depended on the security of that Baby, and St. Joseph was the one created to keep Him safe.

Perhaps Our Lord is calling you to explore a Consecration to St. Joseph in 2024.

“If Joseph was so engaged, heart and soul, in protecting and providing for that little family at Nazareth, don’t you think that now in heaven he is the same loving father and guardian of the whole Church, of all its members, as he was of its Head on earth?”
