First Fridays Devotion

The Nine First Fridays Devotion is one made in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our Lord requested the establishment of the devotion and Feast Day during a series of visions in which He appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673.

Completing the devotion is simple: Make a Good Confession (if needed in order to be in a State of Grace), Attend Holy Mass, and Receive Holy Communion, all with the intention of reparation for the sinfulness and ingratitude of men. These requirements must be completed on the First Friday of the month for nine consecutive months.

Catholic Crusade has an excellent collection of prayers that can be recited as a small addition to this important devotion. The page for them can be accessed HERE. Here reproduced is a particularly moving excerpt of an ​Act of Reparation to The Sacred Heart of Jesus: For the forgetfulness and ingratitude of men, we will console you, O Lord.

For the way you are deserted in your holy tabernacle, we will console you, O Lord.

For the crimes of sinners, we will console you, O Lord.

For the hatred of the impious, we will console you, O Lord.

For the blasphemies uttered against you, we will console you, O Lord.

For the sacrileges that profane your sacrament of love, we will console you, O Lord.

For the outrages against your divinity, we will console you, O Lord.

For the injuries of which you are the adorable victim, we will console you, O Lord.

For the coldness of the greater part of your children, we will console you, O Lord.

For the contempt of your loving invitation, we will console you, O Lord.

For your bitter sadness at the loss of souls, we will console you, O Lord.

For your long waiting at the door of our hearts, we will console you, O Lord.

For the heartless scorn that grieves you, we will console you, O Lord.

For your loving sighs, we will console you, O Lord.

For your loving tears, we will console you, O Lord.

For your loving imprisonment, we will console you, O Lord.

For your loving death, we will console you, O Lord.

This complete prayer (found HERE) and others can aid in the development of a devotion to the Sacred Heart, as can the Enthronement in your home or business. We will be diving into these in future issues, and encourage all of our readers to complete the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in their homes in 2024.

Our Lord also made Twelve Promises to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque regarding those who practice the Nine First Fridays and have a deep devotion to His Sacred Heart, and we will be examining them in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we can begin our Nine First Fridays for 2024 this week, along with our First Saturdays the following day.

While working on “Mass of the Ages Part 3”, I, Adrián, had the honor and pleasure of planning and coordinating a film shoot in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. While there, we were able to interview a wonderful family. This family was humble and incredibly faithful. I was astounded by their incredible generosity and charity despite having so little. In this case, despite the interview being a professional endeavor, the family became great friends of mine and they continue to serve as wonderful examples to me.

The Catholic faith informs everything we do at Alva Leon. It is a real blessing to be able to have worked with a wide variety of Catholic Clients like Mass of the Ages, OnePeterFive, FOCUS, Tridentine Brewing, the Knights of Columbus and more. In addition to corporate and cinematic clients, it is also incredible to do work for private individuals like capturing moments like weddings and confirmations. The way business is conducted is always with the aim to be in line with Church teaching and morals. e. Favorite saint, devotion, prayer or quote. A little sharing to inspire our readers and help them connect with you on a personal level. St. Maria Goretti and St. George are my favorite Saints, precisely because they are both so different, but both provide such incredible examples of bravery and purity. In particular, St. George was there for me when I first started to become interested in the Faith as I explored the Old Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona. I would create a Youtube video that was a reading of the original story of St. George, and this video would become one of my most watched and beloved. Later on, I would learn about St. Maria Goretti and she would become a great friend and confidant for me, and was even able to go to see all the places she lived in in Italy.

Truly both of these great saints are sources of comfort for me and have helped me through their intercessions in incredible ways throughout the years.

Students For Life

Florida International University Serving families at FIU

More than 56,000 students attend Florida International University in bustling Miami, Florida.

Until recently, out of over 400 registered student organizations on campus, there was no organization solely dedicated to pro-life issues until, in January 2023, a small group of students formed a Students for Life chapter at FIU. Students for Life of America is a national organization that equips students to stand up for life, make lasting change on campuses, and support women in their community. There are over 1,400 student groups across the country, serving middle schools, high schools, and universities in every state. Since our humble beginnings, SFL @FIU has grown enormously to reach over 125 members in just 11 months.

We are very active on campus, tabling weekly, collecting donations for pregnancy resource centers, hosting guest speakers, attending political rallies, and more. Our pro-life initiatives have even attracted the attention of The Rolling Stone, Students for Life of America’s blog, and local news channels. But by far our proudest accomplishment is the student baby supply pantry started in September 2023. As an initiative of Standing with You, a Students for Life program dedicated to helping women in need, we hope the pantry alleviates the financial burden that often comes with being a new mom in school.

One of the most common reasons for justifying abortion is the economic hardship young parents face. Providing free diapers, wipes, baby formula, and other items is a practical, yet important step in the fight against abortion. Providing these supplies on campus also helps destigmatize being a young, single mom in college, another reason that pushes women to turn to abortion. However, sustaining the pantry has proved to be a challenge. Over a dozen student moms regularly visit the pantry. We donate hundreds of dollars worth of supplies, and they’re gone within a week. We have collected over 3,000 diapers, 200 packs of wipes, 76 bottles of shampoo, and more. And still, we find we are not able to provide enough for the demand of new and expecting parents on campus. For this reason, we are grateful for any support you may be able to offer! Whether it’s cash donations or physical items, we are grateful for any help!

God has led every step of my path from before that moment until today.

Clients often are coming to me discouraged, defeated and hopeless. It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. And that example to young men? ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man must sharpen another’ (Proverbs 27:17).” -Thomas W., Hollis, NH Beginning the Saturday before Father’s Day in June 2021, 300 men gathered in Washington D.C. on four weeks notice to pray, witness, and proclaim the truth in the public square that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue,” but rather men have a grave responsibility to stand up and lead this movement to abolish the murder of our children and the exploitation of our sisters for profit.

The national event takes place multiple times each year in various U.S. cities and always begins with men gathering outside of an abortion killing center in prayer and raising up our touchstone of the four R’s: Face REALITY, Take RESPONSIBILITY, REPENT of what we have done and what we have not done, and make a new RESOLVE to do more and better, by God’s grace, than what we have done before. Men are encouraged to gather and march with their sons as an opportunity to train them up in virtue and authentic manhood.

The march is a prayerful, public witness and concludes with the Rally for Personhood that has developed to include women and daughters as an opportunity for entire families to stand up publicly together and provide a witness to the world of the equal dignity and complementarity of men and woman, as well as the beauty and goodness of marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, and family life.

National events have included Washington D.C. (2021, 2023), Baltimore, MD (2021, 2022), Tallahassee, FL (2022), Boston, MA (2022), Albany, NY (2023), and the next upcoming national event is scheduled in Boston, MA (11/4/23).

The Simple Truth (Radio show and podcast) The National Men’s March to Abolish Abortion and Rally for Personhood flows forth from the Friday edition of The Simple Truth. The show is hosted by Jim Havens and airs Monday-Friday on The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network, including the popular iCatholicRadio app. The Friday show, Friday with Father, is co-hosted by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, and it was out of on- air discussions between Jim and Fr. Imbarrato that The Men’s March was sparked in 2021. Friday with Father on The Simple Truth continues to grow as a must listen every Friday for pro- lifers as it truly provides cutting edge pro-life commentary that you are not going to hear anywhere else and keeps the focus where it needs to be: the urgent need to abolish abortion now and pushing forward toward that goal.

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed. Luke 2:35, DRA The origins of Our Lady of Sorrows goes back to the Bible. The Holy Book mentions the Prophecy of Simeon: “And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.”

Twelfthnight & Epiphany

The beauty of the Epiphany recalls Christ revealing Himself as Divine three times: first to the Magi, second, at His Baptism, and third with His miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. All three of these Divine Revelations are traditionally believed to have happened on the same calendar date.

In this first Revelation, three Magi from the East entered Jerusalem bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the newborn King, having travelled about 1000 miles from Persia. Their gifts were significant: -the gold as a sign of His Kingship.

-the frankincense- a gum resin (i.e., dried tree sap) from the Boswellia tree, native to Somalia and southern coastal Arabia- as a sign of His Deity.

-the myrrh- a brownish gum resin from the Commiphora abyssinica tree, native to eastern Africa and Arabia, and used in embalming- as a sign of His death. It has analgesic properties, too, and was offered, mixed with wine, to Christ on the Cross, which He refused (Mark 15:23). Nicodemus also brought myrrh to annoint Our Lord's Body after death (John 19:39).

The three Magi- meaning members of the priestly class are seen as the "first fruits of the Gentiles"-those outside of Israel who came to the faith. They were willing to take the risk in order to go searching long distances for the truth, in what they discerned was a monumental event, and they worshipped the Christ Child with the finest things that they had when they found Him. And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11.

Similar to the shepherds, the magi were in total amazement when they laid eyes on the newborn King, and they fell down worshipping Him. They were likely speechless, and one at a time reverently presented their gifts to the Christ Child.

May we also fall down and worship the King when we encounter Him in the Blessed Sacrament, reverently offering Him our very best every chance we get.

Today is when the Magi reach family Nativity. Catholic families exchange gifts on this day, too. A beautiful tradition is the Blessing of the Home on the Feast of the Epiphany. Full prayers can be found HERE. Venite adoremus Dominum!

Feast of the Holy Family

There are many hidden years of Our Lord’s time with the Holy Family, and today is the day to contemplate those years.

We know that the Christ Child was obedient to His parents, and that they had peace in their home. The Child Jesus learned from His father the carpentry trade, and they worked hard together. We can only imagine the joy in their home!

It's a good day to think of the ways that your family can better emulate the Holy Family. How can you, as a mother, make your heart more like the heart of Our Lady? How can you, as a father, make your heart more like St. Joseph's? How can you, as a daughter or son, better honor your parents and grandparents by embracing the Sacred Heart of Christ and emulating Christ's submission and obedience?

Do Thou protect us, guard us and establish amongst us Thy holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by living according to the divine pattern of Thy family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness.

Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by the kindly intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings.

O Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, help us by thy prayers in all our spiritual and temporal needs; that so we may be enabled to praise our divine Savior Jesus, together with Mary and thee, for all eternity. Amen.
