There was a moment that sparked the call in my heart to support couples as a way to work toward bettering our entire world. During my counseling studies in college, the professor described how the health of our society is based on the health of the family, and the health of the family is based on the health of the married couple. God has led every step of my path from before that moment until today.

Clients often are coming to me discouraged, defeated and hopeless. It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. For some, simply the understanding that we have the same belief system and worldview is an essential element in building the trust necessary for a successful therapeutic experience. For others, prayer and the sacraments are very present as part of our healing process. Every therapist uses certain techniques and modalities that identify different agents of change for the client. For me, in my work, the Holy Spirit is always the agent of change The Rosary has always been a great source of peace for me. Our Lady of La Leche, Sts Anne & Joachim, and St. Gianna Molla have a special place in my heart.

Students For Life

Florida International University Serving families at FIU

More than 56,000 students attend Florida International University in bustling Miami, Florida.

Until recently, out of over 400 registered student organizations on campus, there was no organization solely dedicated to pro-life issues until, in January 2023, a small group of students formed a Students for Life chapter at FIU. Students for Life of America is a national organization that equips students to stand up for life, make lasting change on campuses, and support women in their community. There are over 1,400 student groups across the country, serving middle schools, high schools, and universities in every state. Since our humble beginnings, SFL @FIU has grown enormously to reach over 125 members in just 11 months.

We are very active on campus, tabling weekly, collecting donations for pregnancy resource centers, hosting guest speakers, attending political rallies, and more. Our pro-life initiatives have even attracted the attention of The Rolling Stone, Students for Life of America’s blog, and local news channels. But by far our proudest accomplishment is the student baby supply pantry started in September 2023. As an initiative of Standing with You, a Students for Life program dedicated to helping women in need, we hope the pantry alleviates the financial burden that often comes with being a new mom in school.

One of the most common reasons for justifying abortion is the economic hardship young parents face. Providing free diapers, wipes, baby formula, and other items is a practical, yet important step in the fight against abortion. Providing these supplies on campus also helps destigmatize being a young, single mom in college, another reason that pushes women to turn to abortion. However, sustaining the pantry has proved to be a challenge. Over a dozen student moms regularly visit the pantry. We donate hundreds of dollars worth of supplies, and they’re gone within a week. We have collected over 3,000 diapers, 200 packs of wipes, 76 bottles of shampoo, and more. And still, we find we are not able to provide enough for the demand of new and expecting parents on campus. For this reason, we are grateful for any support you may be able to offer! Whether it’s cash donations or physical items, we are grateful for any help!

And that example to young men? ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man must sharpen another’ (Proverbs 27:17).” -Thomas W., Hollis, NH Beginning the Saturday before Father’s Day in June 2021, 300 men gathered in Washington D.C. on four weeks notice to pray, witness, and proclaim the truth in the public square that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue,” but rather men have a grave responsibility to stand up and lead this movement to abolish the murder of our children and the exploitation of our sisters for profit.

The national event takes place multiple times each year in various U.S. cities and always begins with men gathering outside of an abortion killing center in prayer and raising up our touchstone of the four R’s: Face REALITY, Take RESPONSIBILITY, REPENT of what we have done and what we have not done, and make a new RESOLVE to do more and better, by God’s grace, than what we have done before. Men are encouraged to gather and march with their sons as an opportunity to train them up in virtue and authentic manhood.

The march is a prayerful, public witness and concludes with the Rally for Personhood that has developed to include women and daughters as an opportunity for entire families to stand up publicly together and provide a witness to the world of the equal dignity and complementarity of men and woman, as well as the beauty and goodness of marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, and family life.

Over the course of three marches I have met like-minded men with whom I still stay in touch. Men who support each other in standing up for the preborn and for being authentic Catholic Men. National events have included Washington D.C. (2021, 2023), Baltimore, MD (2021, 2022), Tallahassee, FL (2022), Boston, MA (2022), Albany, NY (2023), and the next upcoming national event is scheduled in Boston, MA (11/4/23).

The Simple Truth (Radio show and podcast) The National Men’s March to Abolish Abortion and Rally for Personhood flows forth from the Friday edition of The Simple Truth. The show is hosted by Jim Havens and airs Monday-Friday on The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network, including the popular iCatholicRadio app. The Friday show, Friday with Father, is co-hosted by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, and it was out of on- air discussions between Jim and Fr. Imbarrato that The Men’s March was sparked in 2021. Friday with Father on The Simple Truth continues to grow as a must listen every Friday for pro- lifers as it truly provides cutting edge pro-life commentary that you are not going to hear anywhere else and keeps the focus where it needs to be: the urgent need to abolish abortion now and pushing forward toward that goal.

Those in positions of power who vehemently advocate for the murder of unborn children have been allowed to dominate our culture for too long. Owner, Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care Serving clients via telehealth

Providing the Creighton Model FertilityCare System as an effective and life-affirming way for single women and married couples to discover the truth of their reproductive health and embrace the gift of their fertility. As part of the program, married couples learn to identify their fertile and infertile days for either achieving or avoiding pregnancy. In addition, women and couples can also be referred to a Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultant to treat reproductive health conditions and evaluate the underlying causes of infertility and miscarriage.

I teach the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, an evidence-based method of providing gynecological health education and charting menstrual cycles for women to monitor their fertility and for married couples to either achieve or avoid pregnancy. Once charting begins, I can refer, if needed, to Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultants who can morally and effectively evaluate and treat reproductive health concerns identified on the chart.

I started this practice as a way to increase access to effective, life-affirming fertility care services. When I worked for the Archdiocese of Miami Respect Life Office, I counseled many pregnant women who were unsure of how their bodies worked, and, once they were postpartum, thought that contraception and sterilization were the only options, since their OBGYN offered these free with insurance. Though I counseled against it, my words made little difference to someone with free birth control pills or an already scheduled sterilization appointment. Therefore, my goal was to create a Catholic fertility care center where couples could receive accessible, effective, and life-affirming counseling, education, and care through a Catholic lens. That’s how I was inspired to start Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care, after the only Marian approved apparition in the United States in Champion, Wisconsin.

The majority of my clients see me to achieve pregnancy. Therefore, my biggest impact has been with the infertility population which is rapidly increasing. I have several clients currently pregnant after experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss (miscarriage), or recurrent pregnancy loss

Besides achieving pregnancy, couples have also commented that this program has helped them grow in their spousal relationship, given them an intimate understanding of their body, and increased their confidence in the evaluation and maintenance of their own gynecological health.

I work with everyone regardless of ability to pay. This service is important for all women to understand their body and use their fertility for the glory of God. The education I give not only includes the science of fertility and how to read and record the signs of the woman’s body, but also the Catholic teaching on Periodic Abstinence and Infertility that the Church has handed down to us for our salvation. Our Lady of Good Help in her apparition said to the visionary, “Gather the children of this wild country and teach them what they need to know for salvation.” Therefore, I also encourage Marian devotion to all of my clients, especially through the Rosary.

My favorite devotion is Marian Devotion. St. Dominic said, “one day through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” Later on when Our Lady introduced the Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine, the medal was also included in the trifecta: Rosary, Scapular, and Miraculous Medal. Saints devoted to the medal include St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Mother Teresa. They witnessed radical conversions because of the medal. That’s why all of my clients receive a free handmade Rosary, made by my husband, and a Miraculous Medal for them to wear around the neck as Our Lady stipulated to St. Catherine. Consecrate yourselves to Mary. I tell everyone: place her first and God’s designs will be realized in your fertility and family.

Mrs. Berquist shared, “First of all, as a Catholic I know that the Faith informs every aspect of life. I heard a sermon once in which the priest said you breathe differently because you are Catholic. I think that is true. Everything we do should be done with our true end in mind.

I tell my students, frequently, that this life is very short. However long it is, it is very short. Eternity, on the other hand, is very, very long. Eternity is our true home and everything we do needs to be done with that goal in mind.

Not only getting there, but, as St John Henry Cardinal Newman says, making ‘new hearts’ that are focused on the things of heaven. That way, when the time comes, we will be entering a familiar place ready to take up our life there.

Also, my faith helps me not to worry too much. We want to do what God wants and He often reveals His will through circumstances. So I try to just put those circumstances into His hands and see them as His will. That doesn’t mean I don’t plan or don’t respond to a new circumstance by encouraging it or addressing it. But it does mean that I see this is all in God’s hands, it is His plan, and His plan is perfect. If my plan is not His plan, then I need to change.”

Dec. 17,-23 O Antiphons

The Catholic Faithful have been singing the "O Antiphons” since at least the eighth century, though many estimates date them to the fifth century or even earlier. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well, pointing us towards Easter and the Second Coming of Our Lord. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

In fact, the O Antiphons are the source of the lyrics of the classic Advent "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" ("Come, O come Emmanuel"), and are a special way to build the joyful anticipation in the final days leading up to the birth of the Promised Savior.

The seven "O Antiphons" (also called the "Greater Antiphons" or "Major Antiphons") are prayers that come directly from the Breviary's Vespers (evening prayers) during the Octave before Christmas Eve, a time which is called the "Golden Nights."

Each Antiphon begins with "O" and addresses Our Lord with a unique title drawn from the prophecies of Isaiah and Micah. The initial letters, when read backwards, form an acrostic, which is a literary tool typical of the time period, for the Latin Ero Cras, meaning "Tomorrow, I come." The titles for Our Lord in Latin & English, along with their Old Testament prophetic verses are found below: O Sapientia (O Wisdom) Isaiah 11:2–3; 28:29 O Adonai (O Lord) Isaiah 11:4–5; 33:22 O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) Isaiah 1:1; 11:10 O Clavis David (O Key of David) Isaiah 9:6; 22:22 O Oriens (O Rising Sun) Isaiah 9:1 O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations) Isaiah 9:5; 2:4 O Emmanuel (God with us) Isaiah 7:14 To pray the O Antiphons as they are prayed in the Divine Office, begin with the Antiphon, then pray the Magnificat, then repeat the Antiphon, praying one O Antiphon each evening from December 17-23. Reading and reflecting on the Scripture references adds 19

additional depth to what are so warmly regarded as the Golden Nights. Families can add more traditions, from singing an Advent hymn, lighting candles, adding to their Jesse Tree, or other practices selected by the family. One suggestion is to first chant the O Antiphons in Latin, and then in the vernacular so that especially young children can understand and further their devotion.

As our final preparations for Christmas are being completed, our prayers should also point to a “count down” of sorts for the birth of the Divine Child, and the O Antiphons do just that.

Winter is the time in which we reflect, as cold and snow have blanketed the terrain around us in most of the world.

For Christians, Winter symbolizes Hope: though the world now appears lifeless and reminds us of our own mortality, we have hope because of the Resurrection of the One Whose Nativity we eagerly await.

In the new Code of Canon Law, Embertides are voluntary but the practice is growing in popularity once again. In Advent, they are a beautiful tradition in the richness of the season of preparing for the birth of the promised Savior.

These special days occur four times per year and are spent fasting and partially abstaining. This is done in penance and with the intentions of thanking God for the gifts He gives us in nature and beseeching Him for the discipline to use them in moderation.

The Israelites had fasted weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but Christians changed the fast days to Wednesdays (the day on which Our Lord was betrayed) and Fridays (the day on which He was crucified). The weekly two day fasts were later amended in the Roman Church to keeping only Fridays as penitential days, (and the requirement eliminated later on) but during Embertides, the older, two-day fasts are restored.

Saturdays (the day He was entombed) were added to these Ember times of fasting and are seen as a sort of culmination of the Ember Days.

Ember Days are generally favored for priestly ordinations, prayer for priests, first Communions, almsgiving and other penitential and charitable acts, and prayer for the souls in Purgatory.

In the hustle and bustle of a busy holiday season, one can easily see the beauty in this short period of penance and fasting. With their proximity to the Nativity of the Lord, it’s the perfect time to slow down, reflect on the blessings in our lives, pray for the souls who have gone before us, and prepare for a truly joyous celebration when the Savior is born. It’s also a great time to serve the poor or do other charitable acts before the full festivities begin.

All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven.

A time to be born and a time to die.

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.

A time to kill, and a time to heal.

A time to destroy, and a time to build.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh.

A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather.

A time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

A time to get, and a time to lose.

A time to keep, and a time to cast away.

A time to rend, and a time to sew.

A time to keep silence, and a time to speak.

A time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Fasting Rules for Advent Embertide Fasting consists of the following: One full meal and two smaller meals, that when combined, do not equal a full meal.

Ember Wednesday of Advent– Fasting & Partial Abstinence: meat is allowed during the main meal of the day.

Ember Friday of Advent- Fasting & Abstinence: No meat is allowed. Fish, eggs and cheese are allowed.

Ember Saturday of Advent– Fasting & Abstinence: No meat is allowed. Fish, eggs and cheese are allowed.

As the time for the birth of Our Lord drew near, St. Joseph and Our Lady learned that they needed to go on a long journey to Bethlehem for the Roman census. The journey was about 90 miles of grueling, dangerous travel. Despite the time of the birth of Our Lord drawing near, Our Lady prepared for the journey with grace, as she did all things. It’s easy to think most moms would feel a little like complaining when faced with this sudden, unexpected and long, arduous journey while nine months pregnant. They may begin to worry about the birth and the uncertainty of the conditions in Bethlehem, and it’s not too hard to imagine at least a small bit of frustration and/or fear at their own plan for the birth being interfered with.

It is likely it took 9-10 days for the Holy Family to slowly make the trip, with temperatures dipping into the 40s overnight.

Simple food and water had to be carried, and there were also wild animals, rain, and desert robbers to contend with. All of this plus riding on a donkey from dawn until dusk for ten days. Imagine enduring this at the late stage of pregnancy Our Lady was in!

Where any normal person would begin to complain or doubt the plan, Our Lady did not.

Since she knew the Scriptures, it’s likely that she was familiar with Micah Chapter 5, which says, “But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, least among the clans of Judah, From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has born.”

Is it possible that when she heard the news of the necessary journey, she was reminded of this Scripture? It could reasonably be deducted that since she knew who the Child 29

in her womb was, it was also likely that she recognized the journey to Bethlehem as part of the fulfillment of the prophesies about this Child. A similar conclusion could be drawn for St. Joseph.

Drawing near to Our Lady, imagine the sentiment she felt at the moment she realized that it was very likely that her Baby would be born on this upcoming and unplanned journey, in order to fulfill what was spoken about the Promised Messiah.

Suddenly, her and St. Joseph’s humble and gracious preparations can begin to be understood even by us. Her patience and grace for the long journey is something we could at least hope to take part in, and the immense peace with which she birthed the Savior while preserving her Perpetual Virginity, in the most humble of accommodations imaginable makes just a little more sense to our simple minds.

While the journey was long and difficult, St. Joseph and Our Lady went in obedience to the civil authorities but also to fulfill what was prophesied about the birth of the Promised Savior.

May we draw near to St. Joseph and Our Lady as they embark on this journey, enduring all that we must in order to do what God has asked us to do.
