From the Desk of Monsignor Dear friends in Christ, The first Sunday of Advent , December 3, 2023, was the first day of the new Liturgical year of the Church. The Mass of that day properly prepared us for the double coming (Adventus) of Christ.

The four weeks of Advent represent the thousands of years humanity awaited the coming of the Messiah. In Advent, the Church lives again through a period of hope, expectation and prayer.

The Liturgy helped us to raise our hearts in the Introit of the Mass, "Ad te levavi animan meam, Deus meus,” meaning “To you I lift up my soul O my God,” and to purify our hearts for the coming of our Savior. Saint Paul reminded us in the Epistle to "cast off the works of darkness" and “put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:11-14) On the first day of Advent, the Church read the Gospel of St. Luke at Mass. (Luke 21:25-33). The Gospel passage is a dramatic explanation of the end of the world and of Jesus' second coming. There is indeed a sharp contrast between the spiritual preparation the Church invites us to observe and the excessive commercialized atmosphere that surrounds us anticipating the Christmas celebration.

Advent and consequently Christmas in this month of December, is particularly a Marian season. Through the Liturgy we consider the favors which God granted Mary on the day of the Annunciation. He chose as His ambassador the Archangel Gabriel to announce that He had selected her from all eternity to be the Mother of his Son, His Eternal Word. God conferred on her the plenitude of His grace "Salve Maria gratia plena." He accomplished in her the ineffable mystery of the Incarnation, the mystery of God's infinite love by coming to dwell among us assuming our human nature.

The response Our Lady gave to the Archangel at the Annunciation: "Ecce ancilla Domini, fiat." “Here is the servant (slave) of the Lord, Let it be done to me according to your Word,” (Luke 1:26-38) represented the depth of her humility and the conformity of her will to God's Divine Will.

Clients often are coming to me discouraged, defeated and hopeless. It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. The best feedback I receive is when clients begin moving into greater peace, freedom and hope for their lives and future.

My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. For some, simply the understanding that we have the same belief system and worldview is an essential element in building the trust necessary for a successful therapeutic experience. For others, prayer and the sacraments are very present as part of our healing process. Every therapist uses certain techniques and modalities that identify different agents of change for the client. And that example to young men? ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man must sharpen another’ (Proverbs 27:17).” -Thomas W., Hollis, NH Beginning the Saturday before Father’s Day in June 2021, 300 men gathered in Washington D.C. on four weeks notice to pray, witness, and proclaim the truth in the public square that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue,” but rather men have a grave responsibility to stand up and lead this movement to abolish the murder of our children and the exploitation of our sisters for profit.

The national event takes place multiple times each year in various U.S. cities and always begins with men gathering outside of an abortion killing center in prayer and raising up our touchstone of the four R’s: Face REALITY, Take RESPONSIBILITY, REPENT of what we have done and what we have not done, and make a new RESOLVE to do more and better, by God’s grace, than what we have done before. Men are encouraged to gather and march with their sons as an opportunity to train them up in virtue and authentic manhood.

The march is a prayerful, public witness and concludes with the Rally for Personhood that has developed to include women and daughters as an opportunity for entire families to stand up publicly together and provide a witness to the world of the equal dignity and complementarity of men and woman, as well as the beauty and goodness of marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, and family life.

The Simple Truth (Radio show and podcast) The National Men’s March to Abolish Abortion and Rally for Personhood flows forth from the Friday edition of The Simple Truth. The show is hosted by Jim Havens and airs Monday-Friday on The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network, including the popular iCatholicRadio app. The Friday show, Friday with Father, is co-hosted by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, and it was out of on- air discussions between Jim and Fr. Imbarrato that The Men’s March was sparked in 2021. Friday with Father on The Simple Truth continues to grow as a must listen every Friday for pro- lifers as it truly provides cutting edge pro-life commentary that you are not going to hear anywhere else and keeps the focus where it needs to be: the urgent need to abolish abortion now and pushing forward toward that goal.

Owner, Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care Serving clients via telehealth

Providing the Creighton Model FertilityCare System as an effective and life-affirming way for single women and married couples to discover the truth of their reproductive health and embrace the gift of their fertility. As part of the program, married couples learn to identify their fertile and infertile days for either achieving or avoiding pregnancy. In addition, women and couples can also be referred to a Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultant to treat reproductive health conditions and evaluate the underlying causes of infertility and miscarriage.

I teach the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, an evidence-based method of providing gynecological health education and charting menstrual cycles for women to monitor their fertility and for married couples to either achieve or avoid pregnancy. Once charting begins, I can refer, if needed, to Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultants who can morally and effectively evaluate and treat reproductive health concerns identified on the chart.

I started this practice as a way to increase access to effective, life-affirming fertility care services. When I worked for the Archdiocese of Miami Respect Life Office, I counseled many pregnant women who were unsure of how their bodies worked, and, once they were postpartum, thought that contraception and sterilization were the only options, since their OBGYN offered these free with insurance. Though I counseled against it, my words made little difference to someone with free birth control pills or an already scheduled sterilization appointment. Therefore, my goal was to create a Catholic fertility care center where couples could receive accessible, effective, and life-affirming counseling, education, and care through a Catholic lens. That’s how I was inspired to start Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care, after the only Marian approved apparition in the United States in Champion, Wisconsin.

The majority of my clients see me to achieve pregnancy. Therefore, my biggest impact has been with the infertility population which is rapidly increasing. I have several clients currently pregnant after experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss (miscarriage), or recurrent pregnancy loss

Besides achieving pregnancy, couples have also commented that this program has helped them grow in their spousal relationship, given them an intimate understanding of their body, and increased their confidence in the evaluation and maintenance of their own gynecological health.

I work with everyone regardless of ability to pay. This service is important for all women to understand their body and use their fertility for the glory of God. The education I give not only includes the science of fertility and how to read and record the signs of the woman’s body, but also the Catholic teaching on Periodic Abstinence and Infertility that the Church has handed down to us for our salvation. Our Lady of Good Help in her apparition said to the visionary, “Gather the children of this wild country and teach them what they need to know for salvation.” Therefore, I also encourage Marian devotion to all of my clients, especially through the Rosary.

My favorite devotion is Marian Devotion. St. Dominic said, “one day through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” Later on when Our Lady introduced the Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine, the medal was also included in the trifecta: Rosary, Scapular, and Miraculous Medal. Saints devoted to the medal include St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Mother Teresa. They witnessed radical conversions because of the medal. That’s why all of my clients receive a free handmade Rosary, made by my husband, and a Miraculous Medal for them to wear around the neck as Our Lady stipulated to St. Catherine. Consecrate yourselves to Mary. I tell everyone: place her first and God’s designs will be realized in your fertility and family.

Mrs. Berquist shared, “First of all, as a Catholic I know that the Faith informs every aspect of life. I heard a sermon once in which the priest said you breathe differently because you are Catholic. I think that is true. Everything we do should be done with our true end in mind.

I tell my students, frequently, that this life is very short. However long it is, it is very short. Eternity, on the other hand, is very, very long. Eternity is our true home and everything we do needs to be done with that goal in mind.

Not only getting there, but, as St John Henry Cardinal Newman says, making ‘new hearts’ that are focused on the things of heaven. That way, when the time comes, we will be entering a familiar place ready to take up our life there.

Also, my faith helps me not to worry too much. We want to do what God wants and He often reveals His will through circumstances. So I try to just put those circumstances into His hands and see them as His will. That doesn’t mean I don’t plan or don’t respond to a new circumstance by encouraging it or addressing it. But it does mean that I see this is all in God’s hands, it is His plan, and His plan is perfect. If my plan is not His plan, then I need to change.”

From the Christmastide Shopping Guide...

Dec. 8, Immaculate Conception A holy day of Obligation in the United States, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates when Our Lady was conceived in the womb of St. Anne.

The parents of Mary were St. Joachim and St. Anne and were devout in their faith. It is believed that they tithed two thirds of their income- one third to the Temple, one third to the poor, and then they lived on just one third.

Seeing how abundantly God chose to bless them for their generosity is remarkable. They became the parents of the Immaculate Conception, and the grandparents of the King of Kings.

We know that God exists outside of time and space, so it’s easy to see that the sacrifice of His Son was applied to Our Lady preemptively, preventing the stain of original sin from ever touching her soul. This was all in Divine Providence: God knew she would say yes when He asked her to be the Mother of His Son. It is, of course fitting that the New Ark of the Covenant would be free from sin. The flesh from which Our Lord’s flesh would come must have had to be pure and undefiled.

by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.” The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as “full of grace”.

In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.

491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception.

Her Immaculate Conception is the reason why she was Assumed into Heaven (and never died), as the pain of sin is death. Many also believe she did not suffer in the miraculous virginal childbirth of the Savior, as suffering in childbearing was a punishment from Original Sin. The Papal Encyclical on the Immaculate Conception is Ineddabilis Deus, by Pope Bl. Pius IX, in 1854. Today is a wonderful day to spend some time reading it in its entirety HERE. The encyclical closes with this hoped-for result for the faithful: “Let them fly with utter confidence to this most sweet Mother of mercy and grace in all dangers, difficulties, needs, doubts and fears. Under her guidance, under her patronage, under her kindness and protection, nothing is to be feared; nothing is hopeless. Because, while bearing toward us a truly motherly affection and having in her care the work of our salvation, 17

she is solicitous about the whole human race. And since she has been appointed by God to be the Queen of heaven and earth, and is exalted above all the choirs of angels and saints, and even stands at the right hand of her only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, she presents our petitions in a most efficacious manner. What she asks, she obtains.

Her pleas can never be unheard.”

This day is extra special for us at Catholic Owned, because we are consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our stated purpose is to spread devotion to her Immaculate Heart.

Dom Gueranger, O.S.B writes: “The feast of the blessed Virgin's Immaculate Conception is the most solemn of all those which the Church celebrates during the holy time of Advent...Let us, then, celebrate this solemnity with joy; for the Conception of Mary tells us that the Birth of Jesus is not far off.”

Dec. 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mexico in the early 16th century was a brutal land ruled by the Aztecs, a people whose demonic religion involved human sacrifice. Scholars estimate that between 20,000 to 250,000 people per year were sacrificed to the Aztecs' gods. Conquered by Hernan Cortes in 1519-1521, just ten years later, against this backdrop of generations of brutality, a beautiful miracle occurred.

Our Lady of Guadalupe first introduced herself as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity when she appeared on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico in 1531. An indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw a glowing figure on the hill. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared in order for her to show and share her love and compassion with all those who believe.

Afterwards, Juan Diego visited Archbishop Juan de Zumárraga, of what is now Mexico City. Zumárraga dismissed him in disbelief and asked that the future Saint provide proof of his story and the Lady’s identity.

Juan Diego returned to the hill and encountered Our Lady again. The Virgin told him to climb to the top of the hill and pick some flowers to present to the Archbishop as the sign.

Although it was winter and nothing should have been in bloom, Juan Diego found an abundance of a type of roses he did not recognize. The Virgin bundled the flowers into Juan Diego’s tilma. When Juan Diego presented the tilma to te Archbishop, the exotic flowers fell out and he recognized them as Castilian roses, which are not found in Mexico.

What was even more significant, however, was that the tilma had been miraculously imprinted with a colorful image of the Virgin herself.

The actual tilma, preserved since that date and showing the familiar image of the Virgin Mary with her head bowed and hands together in prayer, represents the Virgin of Guadalupe. It remains perhaps the most sacred object in all of Mexico.

scholar Antonio Valeriano. It was written sometime after 1556.

Over 20 million people visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe each year, now situated on the very same hill on which she appeared. The Virgin of Guadalupe was declared Queen of Mexico and is Patroness of the Americas. Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary—and the God who sent her—accepts all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for the indigenous population. While a number of them had converted before this incident, they now came in droves. According to a contemporary chronicler, nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time.

Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God’s love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself.

Dec. 13, St. Lucy

“Lucy, a virgin of Syracuse, illustrious by birth and by the Christian faith, which she had professed from her infancy, went to Catania, with her mother Eutychia, who was suffering from a flux of blood, there to venerate the body of the blessed Agatha.

Having prayed fervently at the tomb, she obtained her mother's cure, by the intercession of St. Agatha. Lucy then asked her mother that she would permit her to bestow upon the poor of Christ the fortune which she intended to leave her. No sooner, therefore, had she returned to Syracuse, than she sold all that was given to her and distributed the money amongst the poor.

When he, to whom her parents had against her will promised her in marriage, came to know what Lucy had done, he went before the prefect Paschasius and accused her of being a Christian. Paschasius entreated and threatened, but could not induce her to worship the idols; nay, the more he strove to shake her faith, the more inflamed were the praises which she uttered in professing its excellence. He said, therefore, to her: We shall have no more of thy words, when thou feelest the blows of my executioners. To this the virgin replied: Words can never be wanting to God's servants, for Christ our Lord has said to them: When you shall be brought before kings and governors, take no thought how or what to speak; for it shall be given to you in that hour what to speak; for it is not you that speak, but the holy Spirit that speaketh in you. Paschasius then asked her: Is the holy Spirit in thee? She answered: They who live chastely and piously, are the temple of the holy Spirit. He said: I will order thee to be taken to a brothel, that this holy Spirit may leave thee. The virgin said to him: The violence wherewith thou threatenest me would obtain for me a double crown of chastity.

Whereupon Paschasius being exceedingly angry, ordered Lucy to be dragged to a place where her treasure might be violated; but, by the power of God, so firmly was she fixed to the place where she stood, that it was impossible to move her. Wherefore the prefect ordered her to be covered over with pitch, resin, and boiling oil, and a fire to be

kindled round her. But seeing that the flame was not permitted to hurt her, they tormented her in many cruel ways, and at length ran a sword through her neck. Thus wounded, Lucy foretold the peace of the Church, which would come after the death of Diocletian and Maximian, and then died.”

Prayer to St. Lucy: “O Saint Lucy, named from the light, full of confidence we present ourselves before thee, to ask of thee a holy light, which may render us cautious in avoiding the ways of sin and escaping the darkness of error. We beg also, through thy intercession, for the preservation of the light of our eyes, together with abundant grace to use it always in accordance with the will of God and without injury to our souls. Grant, O blessed Lucy, that, after venerating and thanking thee for thy powerful patronage on earth, we may come at last to rejoice with thee in the paradise of the eternal light of the divine Lamb, thy sweet spouse Jesus.

Amen.”

St. Ambrose is one of the original four Doctors of the Church. As Bishop of Milan, he baptized Augustine of Hippo, the son of St. Monica, who credited Ambrose "as an angel of God who uprooted her son from his former ways and led him to his convictions of Christ."

A fearless leader known for his diplomatic, pastoral approach while still holding fast to the Truth, Ambrose is credited with authoring and composing many of the Church's important writings and hymns, including the “Antiphonal Chant” and the hymn "Te Deum."

Here reproduced is the Prayer of St. Ambrose, ideal for before Mass and especially appropriate for prayer immediately before receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist. (Emphasis added is ours.)

“O loving Lord Jesus Christ, I a sinner, presuming not on my own merits, but trusting in Thy mercy and goodness, with fear and trembling approach the table of Thy most sacred banquet.
