From the Desk of Monsignor Dear friends in Christ, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. Which is the least indeed of all seeds; but when it is grown up, it is greater than all herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come, and dwell in the branches thereof." (Mathew 13:31) Mathew's Gospel contains a number of parables, a simple but effective method used by Jesus to teach and illustrate His divine truths. He used the common, ordinary circumstances, ideas and facts of the people of His time.

The Kingdom of Heaven is compared to the very small grain of a mustard seed. Mustard plants are common in Palestine, so the people could understand the parable. When the grain is sowed, it disintegrates and a new tree grows, and the birds flock to its branches, seeking to eat the new seeds.

The parable was meant to teach about the simple beginnings of His Church and to show how the greatness and glory of God was hidden in the humility of Jesus’ humanity.

In John's Gospel, our Lord will also make reference to the small seed of wheat, saying, "Unless the grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it will not produce fruit. But if it dies, it will produce much fruit." (John 12:24-25) This can also be interpreted as the parable about the mystery of life and death. Our lives are hidden in Christ since in the Sacrament of Baptism, an invisible transformation takes place in our souls. At the time of death our bodies eventually return to dust, but life is transformed, not ended.

May we receive Christ's divine grace in the frequent reception of His Sacraments and may we help others to love Him and receive Him as well.

Saint Francis of Assisi personally followed, imitated Jesus and embraced His teachings. The saint inspired his brothers to practice evangelical poverty and to be humble and simple, to the extent that he called his community "fratelli minori or "brothers minor” or “lesser brothers.”

The Mother of the Lord, when recognizing God's greatness and glory exclaimed, "He has looked upon the humility of His handmaid and He has done great things for me " He has regarded the humility of His handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He that is mighty, has done great things for me; and holy is His name.” (Luke 1:48-49) Prayer: “Lord Jesus, I know my life is also small and insignificant like a grain of seed but with Your help, like Mary, I can recognize Your divine presence and greatness within me for without You, I can do nothing.

Even if at times, I encounter the darkness of my soul. I will trust in you and not fear, Your rod and Your staff will comfort me...Your love and Your life are enough for me. Amen.”

It’s a gift and an honor that I don’t take lightly to be invited into their suffering, given permission to walk with them through the pain, and help facilitate healing, growth, and wholeness. My faith is at the center of my life - who I am, the way I live, and the way I run my business. The way faith is integrated within sessions is unique to each client and their own faith journey. For some, simply the understanding that we have the same belief system and worldview is an essential element in building the trust necessary for a successful therapeutic experience. And that example to young men? ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man must sharpen another’ (Proverbs 27:17).” -Thomas W., Hollis, NH Beginning the Saturday before Father’s Day in June 2021, 300 men gathered in Washington D.C. on four weeks notice to pray, witness, and proclaim the truth in the public square that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue,” but rather men have a grave responsibility to stand up and lead this movement to abolish the murder of our children and the exploitation of our sisters for profit.

The national event takes place multiple times each year in various U.S. cities and always begins with men gathering outside of an abortion killing center in prayer and raising up our touchstone of the four R’s: Face REALITY, Take RESPONSIBILITY, REPENT of what we have done and what we have not done, and make a new RESOLVE to do more and better, by God’s grace, than what we have done before. Men are encouraged to gather and march with their sons as an opportunity to train them up in virtue and authentic manhood.

The march is a prayerful, public witness and concludes with the Rally for Personhood that has developed to include women and daughters as an opportunity for entire families to stand up publicly together and provide a witness to the world of the equal dignity and complementarity of men and woman, as well as the beauty and goodness of marriage, fatherhood, motherhood, and family life.

The Simple Truth (Radio show and podcast) The National Men’s March to Abolish Abortion and Rally for Personhood flows forth from the Friday edition of The Simple Truth. The show is hosted by Jim Havens and airs Monday-Friday on The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network, including the popular iCatholicRadio app. The Friday show, Friday with Father, is co-hosted by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, and it was out of on- air discussions between Jim and Fr. Imbarrato that The Men’s March was sparked in 2021. Friday with Father on The Simple Truth continues to grow as a must listen every Friday for pro- lifers as it truly provides cutting edge pro-life commentary that you are not going to hear anywhere else and keeps the focus where it needs to be: the urgent need to abolish abortion now and pushing forward toward that goal.

Owner, Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care Serving clients via telehealth

Providing the Creighton Model FertilityCare System as an effective and life-affirming way for single women and married couples to discover the truth of their reproductive health and embrace the gift of their fertility. As part of the program, married couples learn to identify their fertile and infertile days for either achieving or avoiding pregnancy. In addition, women and couples can also be referred to a Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultant to treat reproductive health conditions and evaluate the underlying causes of infertility and miscarriage.

I teach the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, an evidence-based method of providing gynecological health education and charting menstrual cycles for women to monitor their fertility and for married couples to either achieve or avoid pregnancy. Once charting begins, I can refer, if needed, to Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology Medical Consultants who can morally and effectively evaluate and treat reproductive health concerns identified on the chart.

I started this practice as a way to increase access to effective, life-affirming fertility care services. When I worked for the Archdiocese of Miami Respect Life Office, I counseled many pregnant women who were unsure of how their bodies worked, and, once they were postpartum, thought that contraception and sterilization were the only options, since their OBGYN offered these free with insurance. Though I counseled against it, my words made little difference to someone with free birth control pills or an already scheduled sterilization appointment. Therefore, my goal was to create a Catholic fertility care center where couples could receive accessible, effective, and life-affirming counseling, education, and care through a Catholic lens. That’s how I was inspired to start Our Lady of Good Help Fertility Care, after the only Marian approved apparition in the United States in Champion, Wisconsin.

The majority of my clients see me to achieve pregnancy. Therefore, my biggest impact has been with the infertility population which is rapidly increasing. I have several clients currently pregnant after experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss (miscarriage), or recurrent pregnancy loss

Besides achieving pregnancy, couples have also commented that this program has helped them grow in their spousal relationship, given them an intimate understanding of their body, and increased their confidence in the evaluation and maintenance of their own gynecological health.

I work with everyone regardless of ability to pay. This service is important for all women to understand their body and use their fertility for the glory of God. The education I give not only includes the science of fertility and how to read and record the signs of the woman’s body, but also the Catholic teaching on Periodic Abstinence and Infertility that the Church has handed down to us for our salvation. Our Lady of Good Help in her apparition said to the visionary, “Gather the children of this wild country and teach them what they need to know for salvation.” Therefore, I also encourage Marian devotion to all of my clients, especially through the Rosary.

My favorite devotion is Marian Devotion. St. Dominic said, “one day through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” Later on when Our Lady introduced the Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine, the medal was also included in the trifecta: Rosary, Scapular, and Miraculous Medal. Saints devoted to the medal include St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Mother Teresa. They witnessed radical conversions because of the medal. That’s why all of my clients receive a free handmade Rosary, made by my husband, and a Miraculous Medal for them to wear around the neck as Our Lady stipulated to St. Catherine. Consecrate yourselves to Mary. I tell everyone: place her first and God’s designs will be realized in your fertility and family.

Mrs. Berquist shared, “First of all, as a Catholic I know that the Faith informs every aspect of life. I heard a sermon once in which the priest said you breathe differently because you are Catholic. I think that is true. Everything we do should be done with our true end in mind.

I tell my students, frequently, that this life is very short. However long it is, it is very short. Eternity, on the other hand, is very, very long. Eternity is our true home and everything we do needs to be done with that goal in mind.

Not only getting there, but, as St John Henry Cardinal Newman says, making ‘new hearts’ that are focused on the things of heaven. That way, when the time comes, we will be entering a familiar place ready to take up our life there.

Also, my faith helps me not to worry too much. We want to do what God wants and He often reveals His will through circumstances. So I try to just put those circumstances into His hands and see them as His will. That doesn’t mean I don’t plan or don’t respond to a new circumstance by encouraging it or addressing it. But it does mean that I see this is all in God’s hands, it is His plan, and His plan is perfect. If my plan is not His plan, then I need to change.”

From the Christmastide Shopping Guide...

Dec. 6, St. Nicholas St. Nicholas was born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminals—murderers, thieves and robbers.

After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, 343 AD in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas.

Today, St. Nicholas is celebrated with a distant connection to the modern day Santa Clause, but his feast day can still be celebrated without this commercialization.

Some traditions include leaving shoes or stockings out on the night of December 5. Children can receive chocolate coins, oranges, candy canes, or toys, prayer cards, or books. Some families give the annual ornament or nativity set at this time, as a way to start the season. Serving the poor is also emphasized in the tradition of St. Nicholas.

The following prayers are traditionally said today: “St. Nicholas, my special protector, from that bright throne where thou dost enjoy the vision of thy God, in pity turn thine eyes upon me; obtain for me from GOD that grace and assistance of which, in my present necessities, spiritual and temporal, I am most in want, and especially the grace of N______ , if such be expedient for my eternal welfare. Remember, moreover, O glorious and holy Bishop, our Sovereign Pontiff, the Holy Church, and this City of Rome. Bring back to the 15

right way of salvation those who live steeped in sin or buried in the darkness of ignorance, error, and heresy.

Comfort the sorrowing, provide for the needy, strengthen the weak-hearted, defend the oppressed, help the sick; let all experience the effects of thy powerful intercession with Him who is Supreme Giver of all good. Amen.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

St. Andrew Christmas Novena Beginning on November 30 and continuing through Christmas Eve, this prayer is said 15 times per day.

The prayer, directed to God requesting a special intention on the momentous occasion of our Savior’s birth is this:

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, [here mention your request] through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

It can be done all at once, divided into fifteen separate occasions, or any other method preferred. One suggestion is to say it five times at each meal, setting a reminder on one’s calendar to help.

But who was St. Andrew?

We read in the Gospel of John , Chapter 1: “The next day again John stood, and two of his disciples.

And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith to them: Come and see.

They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour. And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him.

He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.”

We see here that St. Andrew was an Apostle of John the Baptist who immediately recognized Our Lord as the Messiah and immediately followed Him. Not only that, he ran to find his brother, Simon, and let him know that they had found the Messiah. And when Our Lord laid eyes on Simon, He gave him the name Peter. In other words, St. Andrew introduced his brother, the first pope, to the Messiah.

Andrew continued to be close with Our Lord, often being mentioned in the first four of lists of the Twelve, though he is not often mentioned in the rest of the Gospels. He was the one who told Our Lord of the young boy with the five loaves and two fish at the miracle of the feeding of the five-thousand.

As one of the Twelve, he went out and preached following the Ascension, and was crucified in Patras on November 30, 60 AD on what has become known as a St. Andrew’s cross.

His feast day is used to help the Church determine the beginning of Advent-it’s always four Sundays before Christmas and on the Sunday closest to St. Andrew’s feast day. And it is from this that the tradition of praying

the special novena arose. It isn’t even asking for St. Andrew’s intercession, but instead a 25-day, Adventlong novena for a special intention that we are asking God to grant us for the celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord.

In other words, we are asking God for our heart’s desire for Christmas. How beautiful is that!

It is piously believed that whoever recites the St. Andrew Christmas novena prayer FIFTEEN times each day from the feast of St. Andrew until Christmas Eve will obtain the favor requested.

So while the world rushes around to prepare for Christmas, already singing carols and celebrating, we can reflect deeply on just what we are going to be celebrating when “the [blessed] hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight” comes.

And, in our solemn preparations for the receiving of the True Gift, we can also carefully consider the intention we’d like to ask for this year, discerning carefully and drawing near to Our Lady as we begin.

Does anyone know you better than your mom?

Especially when you were a kid.

Moms seem to know everything, whether by instinct, knowledge, or some other way, they just seem to know us in every way.

What about love— there’s that saying, “he has a face only a mother could love”? It’s a harsh old saying but speaks to the entirety and unconditional nature of a mother’s love.

Moms forgive us, they give up their very lives for us and do their very best to give us the best life possible. We are literally bone of their bone and flesh of their flesh.

We can all agree that no one’s love is like a good mother’s love.

And what about serving— mothers serve. They serve our every need, from the moment of our conception until we are self-sufficient. All day and all night for the first several years, and anytime we need them for the next decades.

Question 4 from the Baltimore Catechism asks: What must we do to gain the happiness of heaven?

A: To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love, and serve God in this world.

So, who knows God, loves God and served God in this world more than His own Mother?

Simple, no one. Which is why we must cling to her in our own striving for Heaven. Even more so during Advent, when she was closer to Our Lord than anyone ever could be— nourishing Him with her very being.

At this time, Our Lady had been carrying Our Lord for more than eight months, with less than one month remaining before His Nativity. Her preparations for the Promised Savior were underway. She knew there was a somber future ahead for her Son, and many mysteries still remained, despite the series of remarkable events that led up to this point. We can remember Advent is a solemn time of preparation with joyful anticipation of the arrival of the Savior, and walk with Our Lady in our preparations.
