W

e are now back in Ordinary Time, a season in which green is used in church liturgies. Green symbolises new growth and freshness.

There has been good rain in the diocese and wherever we look we can see green fields, trees, and hills which invites us into nature.

Yet somehow this time is far from ordinary for me.

Since Easter the wars and conflicts which besmirch

our world go on without abate. Bombs continue to fall in the hope that peace will emerge through destruction. This seems madness to me. Madness has taken over from good sense and right thinking.

How can peace be the fruit of killing? In the midst of madness there are only two possible responses: a turn to God; and, love. I believe that we must now look to God who in our successes and affluence we have forgotten.

We must also find ways to help and love each other.

In the last month I was in hospital for five days and I am slowly recovering. I have been overwhelmed by visits, wishes and love from so many people. My fridge is full of food given by people who care for me. My need has shown me that I am loved by you.

Thank you so much. Please be assured of my prayers.

2026 Diocesan Art Prize Bishop Greg invites artists to find the face of compassion. Following the success of last year, the Diocese of Lismore is pleased to announce the 2026 Diocesan Art Prize.

ishop Greg Homeming said that the art prize’s theme, the face of compassion, provides artists with the opportunity to recognise the heart of the Catholic Church.

“Compassion lies at the heart of the Gospel and the mission of the Church. It is seen in Christ’s encounters with the vulnerable, outcast, and broken, and it continues to be lived out in the Church today,” Bishop Greg said. “I invite you to use your artistic talents to help recognise

the face of compassion in our world today,” This year, the art prize will host exhibitions at Crowley Care, St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Ballina; St Augustine’s Catholic Church, Coffs Harbour; and All Saints Catholic Church, Kempsey. The final exhibition and awards ceremony will be held at St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore.

The Diocesan Art Prize is open to artists of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels who are parishioners

within the Diocese of Lismore.

Finding God in the everyday Pope Leo XIV and the wisdom of Br Lawrence

As each day, each week, month or year passes our parish and diocesan life grows and changes. It is part of the rhythm of life. A new parish priest or assistant priest is appointed. In our dioceses across Australia, new bishops are appointed. In our parish life we mourn the retirement of a wonderful parishioner who is moving to a new home.

here is often a sense of sadness when change occurs. How will that parishioner, priest, or bishop ever be replaced.

Yet, God always renews.

Each baptised member of the faithful will bring their own God given gifts and talents to the parish. No, it’s not the same, it’s different because each of us is distinct, and each of us has his or her own unique gifts.

Change occurs at all levels of the Church, even the pope.

The mourning of a beloved deceased pope takes time, healing, and God’s grace.

In my lifetime I remember well the warmth and holiness of St Pope Paul VI. The fervour and evangelising spirit of

St John Paul II, a priest formed in the turmoil and harshness of communist Poland, he bought passion and zeal for God’s Church to his pontificate. The scholarly, gentle holiness of Pope Benedict XVI, a pope who with great courage stepped aside and resigned his pontificate.

We than had the outgoing, gregarious Pope Francis whose great gift was to remind us of our need to be a Church where the poor, the lonely, the despised, the immigrant, even the godless could find a home, a shelter, and the warmth of God’s love. A message of love is at times hard to embrace, as our humanity often fears the person or peoples who are different. Pope Francis

knew his message was tough, so he often led by personal example.

When a cardinal is elected as the pope he brings to the Petrine Ministry years of study, pastoral practice, diocesan and parish leadership, his own hopes, dreams and aspirations.

His years of experience and deep personal prayer sustain him in his new ministry.

Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy a life lived in the spiritual practice of the Augustinian friars. His life as a missionary, his younger years as child and student in Chicago, but of particular note his devotion to Brother Lawrence’s little book, The Practice of the presence of God.

Pope Leo in his own words said last year: “This small book places at the centre the experience —indeed, the practice — of the presence of God, as it was experienced and taught by the Carmelite friar Lawrence of the Resurrection, who lived in the seventeenth century.

As I have had occasion to say, together with the writings of Saint Augustine and other books, this is one of the texts that have most shaped my spiritual life and have formed me in what the path can be for knowing and loving the Lord.”

It is worth noting that Br Lawrence was not a theologian or a great intellect, he was the monastery cook, and later the maker and repairer of sandals.

His simplicity and his devotion to God in all matters big or small slowly began to attract those who were highly educated and deeply faithful to those whose faith was simple and uncomplicated and maybe who could not even read or write.

His was disfigured due to war time wounds: he regarded himself as clumsy.

He was not schooled in the finer points of life, yet in his simplicity he was open to the amazing power that a relationship with the Lord could bring.

Pope Leo went on to say: “The path Br Lawrence points out to us is simple and arduous at the same time.

Simple, because it requires nothing other than constantly calling God to mind, with small, continual acts of praise, prayer, supplication, adoration, in every action

and in every thought, having as our horizon, source, and end Him alone. Arduous, because it demands a journey of purification, of ascetic discipline, of renunciation and conversion of the most intimate part of us — of our mind and our thoughts even more than of our actions.”

Pope Leo invites us to constantly be in the presence of God in what we do, when we are dismissed from Sunday Mass the challenge is to continue and prayerfully keep our focus on God. To invite God into our daily lives and tasks: “Through the path that Br Lawrence proposes to us, little by little, as the presence of God becomes familiar and occupies our inner space, the joy of being with Him grows, graces and spiritual riches blossom, and even daily tasks become easy and light,” Pope Leo says.

Could it be that Pope Leo’s devotion to Br Lawrence from the seventeenth century could provide us with an antidote to the constant busyness and rush of daily life. In my last article, in the March edition of Catholic Life, I wrote about the ways in which we could assist in the renewal of our parishes.

We could ask ourselves what might my life look like if I was genuinely devoted to the practice of looking for and seeking the presence of God in my everyday life.

10 year anniversary of the death of Bishop John Satterthwaite This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the passing of Bishop John Steven Satterthwaite, the fourth Bishop of Lismore, who died on Saturday 23 April 2016.

This time provides us with an opportunity to reflect on Bishop John’s contribution to our diocese and the wider Catholic community. The following reflection is adapted from a tribute originally published by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

A late vocation Originally ordained for the Diocese of Armidale, Bishop Satterthwaite was what is termed a “late vocation”.

Before answering his call to the priesthood, he studied engineering at Sydney University, later completing his theology studies at the Lateran University in Rome.

Following his ordination, he served as an assistant priest in Glen Innes, as chancellor and bishop’s secretary in Armidale, and eventually as administrator of the cathedral.

In 1969, at the age of 40, he was appointed coadjutor bishop to Bishop Patrick

Farrelly. He spent his initial years serving in Casino and Grafton before succeeding Bishop Farrelly as Bishop of Lismore in 1971.

A devoted country bishop For 30 years, Bishop Satterthwaite led the diocese through a time of significant change, working alongside priests, religious, and laity to implement the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

He approached this, above all, with characteristic kindness and firmness.

Though highly capable, he chose not to join national committees that would draw him away from his flock, preferring instead the pastoral routine of a “country bishop”. Every week, he traveled the length of the diocese, visiting parishes from Tweed in the north to Camden Haven in the south.

During these visits, he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation, visited Catholic schools, assisted with Reconciliation, comforted the sick, and made a point to visit the parents of local priests and religious.

Always available, he would accept invitations to all parts of the diocese.

He frequently traveled from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads on consecutive days, and he loved celebrating Mass in places like Dunoon, Goolmangar, Larnook, and Nimbin. At Christmas and Easter, after celebrating Mass at the Cathedral, he would drive out to Mallanganee to ensure the community there could also receive the Eucharist.

Humility in leadership When at home in Lismore, Bishop Satterthwaite shared fully in ordinary parish duties. He walked to St Vincent’s Lismore every week to visit patients at the hospital and regularly walked down to the local post office to collect the mail.

He shared a deep bond with local Italian families, regularly celebrating Mass in Italian at the Italo Club in November and at New Italy after Easter. He thoroughly enjoyed sitting down for a plate of pasta and a glass of homemade red wine.

During his three decades as Bishop of Lismore, Bishop Satterthwaite oversaw major developments in Catholic education, healthcare, and aged care across the diocese. Yet, true to his dry, unassuming wit, he refused to take the credit.

He always maintained that these achievements belonged entirely to the hard-working priests and parishioners at the local level.

A teacher to his flock Above all, Bishop Satterthwaite treated everyone with equal dignity. He was a faithful member of the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Ozanam Villa Conference, rarely missing their Tuesday night meetings. Locals affectionately remembered him as a “no-frills bishop” whose homilies were concise and accessible to everyone.

He saw his most important

Above all, Bishop Satterthwaite treated everyone with equal dignity. role not as an administrator but as a teacher. He taught not so much by what he said as by what he did.

Few except those who lived with him would know that if you wanted to find him at 5.30am, he would be found at prayer in the Cathedral.

In December 2000, Bishop Geoffrey Jarrett was appointed as his coadjutor.

Once Bishop Jarrett had settled into the role, Bishop Satterthwaite submitted his retirement to the Holy See, leaving his home in Lismore just as he had arrived 30 years prior — carrying nothing but a small suitcase.

Even in retirement, he returned to active pastoral work, serving in Bellingen and later as a chaplain for aged care in Port Macquarie. Over his lifetime, he ordained 45 priests and dedicated nearly 60 years of official service to building up the Church.

On 1 May 2016, exactly 47 years to the day after his ordination as a bishop, his mortal remains were received into St Carthage’s Cathedral. May he continue to rest in peace.

Born to serve

After almost 40 years of dedicated service as president of the Friends of St Vincent’s volunteer group, Ann Spillane looks back on her life of service at the hospital. What began in the paddocks of Coraki evolved into her enduring legacy at the hospital, most notably marked by her drive to establish the hospital’s beloved coffee lounge and childcare centre.

Sitting in Ann’s sun filled lounge room in Lismore Heights, gazing north east over sleepy green farmland as far as you can see, it would be easy to think that not much has changed in these parts.

Ann Spillane, at 88 years young, would beg to differ.

As a little girl running barefoot through the paddocks in Coraki, jumping in the river and trying to keep up with her older siblings in their quest for outdoor fun, Ann had a wonderful start to life as one of 10 children in her family. Ann remembers her father making sure all of the kids were able to handle themselves in the water, he taught them as toddlers

to make their way to the shore. Ann was swimming solo in the river by age 5.

Always fit and playing some form of sport, be it basketball, hockey, water skiing, and horse riding. “We were forever on the go,” Ann says.

It’s this energy and drive that has been a constant — and has defined Ann’s contribution to the community, the Lismore Parish, and the Friends of St Vincent’s team.

After graduating boarding school and achieving her leaving certificate, 16-year-old Ann avoided going to teacher’s college in Wollongong by securing a clerk’s job at the Department of Education in Lismore.

“We didn’t have much choice in those days. Nurse, librarian, serve behind a counter, or become a teacher.”

A year into the job, Ann noticed that there was a large pay gap between the male and female clerks doing the same job, and successfully lobbied the Department of Education to adjust their pay

rates accordingly. This type of gumption caught the eye of a senior accountant at the department, Tim Spillane, veteran, former rear gunner in the air force. The two were married in 1959.

Tragically, Ann lost an infant child in the early 1960s, and later that decade, doctors discovered she was suffering from a brain aneurysm.

She bravely agreed to an unprecedented surgical procedure to seal an artery, which ultimately saved her life. Ann believes she is incredibly blessed to be here.

She attributes her survival to her health and fitness at the time, coupled with her strong faith in God’s will.

The arrival of Ann and Tim’s son Philip in the early 1970s was welcome news, and eventually Ann went back to work in various administration roles at local schools, using the skills she had garnered during her time in the Department of Education. Ann has a track record of empowering others, especially young women, to

recognise and use their own skills, as a way of breaking down accepted norms and barriers. Following her elder sister, Margaret, a trail blazer in volunteer work at the hospital, Ann began supporting St Vincent’s Lismore in 1981. Working in the hospital shop and running the famed lolly trolley around the patient wards and running fundraising raffles in the community.

At this time, several volunteer bodies worked together in the hospital to support different departments, and in 1987 a board decision was made to unite the teams and their services under one banner.

After many committee discussions, nominations, and voting, the Friends of St Vincent’s was born, with Ann Spillane as its inaugural president.

Her first move was to spread the focus of fundraising support across all areas of the hospital equipment and services, as it was traditionally focused on the palliative care unit.

The legacy is notable today, with much of the hospital equipment purchases being supported by funds raised by the Friends, along with community donations.

Moving into the 1990s was where Ann took the Friends’ fund-raising efforts to another level. Using her community connections, team, motivational skills and endless energy, Ann set about building on already large raffle program, delivering major, regular community events such as The Health Expo, The Festival of Flowers and Music, The Hospital Fete and Craft Group.

Each of which raised tens of thousands of dollars to support patient care packs, services and equipment purchase such as the laparoscopic surgical suite introduced to St Vincent’s as a first in regional Australia.

Ann enlisted the support of key public figures in promoting her events, including wife of then PM, Annita Keating, who attended 18

and brought valuable publicity. In Ann’s words “I was never a craft person, I was a good encourager.”

The Friends Coffee Lounge was a great addition to the hospital entry in 1997, but the crowning achievement during this period is undoubtedly the conception, development, and launch of the Friends Childcare Centre.

Even in 2025, 38 years after taking the helm of the Friends, Ann was the driving force behind the research, design and publishing of From the Archives, a hard-bound, full colour coffee table book which captures the history of the hospital through the lens of hospital staff and volunteers over the 100 years from 1921-2021.

During the 2000s the Friends launched many commemorative spaces around the hospital including the plaque memorial to infants that had been lost during the early years and buried on the grounds, the Returned Services War Memorial Flag Station and Garden, the Friends Courtyard, and more recently the Jim Albertini Centenary Rose Garden. The introduction of the Friends Courtesy Buggy for patient carpark transport has helped countless elderly and invalid patients make their way across the campus, and Ann also oversaw a complete renovation to the

Without doubt, Ann has seen, but more importantly inspired, a great deal of change not only in the community, at St Vincent’s Hospital, but in hearts and minds of staff and volunteer members she has met.

Even though the farmland around Lismore may seem unchanged, Ann’s burning desire, and selfless passion to inspire others, ensures that The Friends of St Vincent’s continue to walk with Christ.

In the Diocese of Lismore, we have our own local legends whose names are whispered with respect and fondness. One day,

these conversations will be joined by the gentle yarn of Fr Peter Slack — a man who unabashedly seized the day.

What do we hear when we “lean in” to listen to his legacy?

We hear of a man defined by extraordinary academic rigour, a true lifelong learner, an inspirational homilist, and a man of and for the people. His is a life lived

law. In 2025, he addressed the Canon Law Society of Australia and New Zealand at their annual conference in Adelaide. He spoke on the complex canonical issue of civil incorporation and where this dissects with mission.

It is a work which is vital to the Catholic school systems and Church entities of today.

Fr Peter’s work over many years to support our bishops, priests and parishes has been second to none, and irreplaceable. His lecturing commitments still entail regular visits to Holy Spirit Seminary and the Broken Bay Institute.

A lifelong learner Fr Peter’s curiosity has never stagnated. In late middle age, he took up piano lessons, becoming a humble student of the art. He is a man who reads insatiably, fueled by a deep love for the creative and performing arts. This ability to constantly learn and shift his thinking is a rare and vital trait for a contemporary leader of faith.

The inspirational homilist To sit in a Mass celebrated

by Fr Peter is to walk out knowing exactly what Christ asks of us. His homilies bridge the gap between deep theology and modern life — moving seamlessly from the mystery of the Risen Christ to contemporary reflections on popular culture. One of his most enduring messages involved the ‘Bookkeeper of Auschwitz’, a homily that gave me the courage to lead as Christ would, regardless of potential consequences.

A man of community Perhaps his most iconic image is that of a humble man walking through the schoolyard, met by a sea of kids eager for a high-five.

Often, his loyal three-legged 22

companion, Lola, is in tow.

Whether having a beer at the pub, marching with the schools on ANZAC Day, eating chips on the pavement during Beef Week, or visiting a new arrival family to Australia, Fr Peter continues to immerse himself in the community.

Whether at the bedside of the sick, a funeral, a wedding, a Baptism, or a Confirmation, he gives the same level of dedicated love and care.

Navigating the complexities of Church, community, business, and education, this self-proclaimed introvert more than holds his own across our diocese.

What defines a legacy?

In time, will we remember the countless visionary ideas or his meticulous emphasis on process and legality?

I think we will each remember a personal experience and encounter.

I will remember a good friend, a great personal support to myself, our community, and our schools. A man who selflessly devoted his life to God and the service of others.

Collectively, I think we will remember a man who gave his all, whose loyalty to our community, our diocese, and the love of Jesus was unwavering. That is a legacy worth leaning in to hear.

Meet the new Diocesan Pastoral Council

Earlier this year, the new Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC) celebrated its formation with a Commissioning Mass at St Carthage’s Cathedral. Guided by the principles of synodality, the council works to listen to all the voices across the diocese and support the bishop in his pastoral leadership. Catholic Life spoke with the new executive, Emma McDonald (Chair), Brother Bill Sullivan (Deputy Chair), and Christine Wightley (Executive Member) about their background, faith, hopes for the council, and a diocesan assembly.

I was born and raised in an Italian Catholic family at Naughtons Gap, just outside Casino. I attended St Mary’s Primary School and St Mary’s High School in Casino and completed all of my sacraments through St Mary’s Parish.

My husband and I have three school-aged children, and our family has strong ties to the local community. In my professional life, I am head of physiotherapy for Lismore, Ballina and Casino hospitals.

I grew up in Sydney on the Northern beaches, moving to Canberra to finish my Secondary schooling.

This is where my Marist journey began. I have been a Secondary teacher and Principal of Marist schools for over 30 years before moving into the management of our Marist Hermitage Retreat Centre in the Southern Highlands of NSW, where I offered retreats and Spiritual Direction. I am now guiding our Marist House of Light retreat facility here in Lismore.

I grew up in a Catholic family, in Moss Vale on the NSW Southern Highlands.

I was married to Ray for 50 years; we have five married children and 11 wonderful grandchildren. I worked in various management positions for the Department of Education for many years.

What faith means Emma: My faith journey began through my family and Catholic schooling, and it has remained an important part of my life. While there have been times when my involvement was largely limited to major celebrations, the foundations of faith have never left me.

About five years ago, I felt called to reconnect more intentionally with the Church and became actively involved in parish life in Casino.

For me, faith is a mystery.

It is not about having all the answers but about trusting in God and recognising that we are connected to something greater than ourselves. Faith gives meaning, purpose and hope, and reminds us that we are part of something beyond our individual lives.

Br Bill: I have been blessed with an enriching spiritual life, having family and many good people mentor and support me on this journey.

I see God present in the ordinary things we encounter each and every day. Noticing these encounters has been and continues to be a gift for me.

Christine: Jesus is the anchor in my life. We are given God’s love unconditionally; we don’t have to earn it.

We all have challenges in life, for many different reasons, and knowing God’s presence is living in us, where we are being nourished by prayer and the sacraments, is such a precious gift.

Hopes for the council

Preparing for a diocesan assembly

Emma: One of my hopes for the Pastoral Council is that we can make a real and positive difference in the life of the diocese. Bishop Greg’s encouragement to “listen humbly and speak bravely” continues to resonate with me. While we each come from different parishes and backgrounds, our responsibility is to listen to and represent the diverse voices across the diocese.

Emma: I see an assembly as an important step in our journey as a synodal Church.

It provides an opportunity to bring together the voices, experiences and hopes of people from across the diocese and to listen carefully to one another.

The consultation that has already taken place provides a strong foundation, and through prayer, discernment and open dialogue, I hope the assembly will help us identify the priorities that matter most to our communities and guide the future direction of our diocese.

Recently, I have found myself reflecting on who I represent around the council table.

As a mother, a woman, a professional, a parishioner and a person of faith, I bring a range of experiences and perspectives. It raises an important question about whose voices we are listening to and how we ensure those voices are heard.

Through prayer, listening and collaboration, I hope we can help build a stronger, more connected and vibrant diocesan community.

Br Bill: I am confident that with the good will, energy and positive outlook of the selected Council members every effort will be made to reach out, connect and make a difference to the wider faith community, supporting and witnessing to the vision of Bishop Greg.

Christine: Through working collaboratively with Bishop Greg, we will reach out to all members of our diocese.

Walking and working together will be a journey of service, listening, and open communication.

Br Bill: I think this offers an opportunity to embrace diversity, listen and engage with people from the committed to the disconnected. In the Gospel Jesus encountered people and met them where they were at; those connected and engaged with the church, those on the fringes and those disconnected. The assembly offers a space to do likewise.

Christine: Being able to include those people who feel they’ve been left out by the Church is really important to acknowledge in our decision making as we prepare for a diocesan assembly. Bishop Greg has asked us to support him in reaching all people, so it’s going to be a journey that will take some time in planning.

Together on the Way Reflections on Archdiocese of Adelaide Synod

I

recently had the privilege of travelling to Adelaide to participate in the Archdiocese’s Synod. From the moment I arrived, the theme, Together on the Way, felt remarkably accurate: not just for Adelaide, but for us here in Lismore, where we share so many of the same hopes, dreams, and challenges. It was a vivid reminder that we are not alone in our local Church.

Across the nation and the universal Church, we are united in faith, sharing the same joy of the Gospel and hope in the risen Christ.

The recurring thread of the day was being sent forth.

We talked about missionary discipleship, active faith, witness to Christ, and the courage to speak boldly (parrhesia). We reflected on the importance of understanding our baptismal

call to participate fully in the life of the Church. In the preparatory work, renowned theologian and consultant at the Synod on Synodality, Fr Ormond Rush, reminded us that in a synodal Church, we journey together. What shapes how we contribute is not our vocation or role, but our charism: the gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit.

Fundamental to all of this is devoting real time to developing our relationship with Christ. Like all relationships, this requires time and effort. In his Carmelite spirituality, Bishop Greg Homeming speaks of “standing in the presence of God.” At the Synod we discussed the personal call to holiness: spending time each day in prayer, experiencing the joy of the Gospels, and encountering Christ anew.

In his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis speaks of a state of constant conversion, an ongoing spiritual renewal and transformation, and a missionary option where we are “permanently in a state of mission” (EG 25), a call reflected in the working document we examined during our Conversations in the Spirit.

Archbishop Patrick O’Regan offered a striking metaphor of a boat, drawing on the symbolism of the Archdiocese’s coat of arms.

The Diocese of Lismore is a diocese of rivers, and his image felt remarkably apt for us. Archbishop O’Regan observed that over time much happens below the waterline of a ship: barnacles accumulate, leaks develop, and eventually a vessel needs to come into dry dock to be

repaired and reset. A dry dock is not where a ship goes to die: it is where it is renewed so that it can sail strongly into the journey ahead. Our local Church is on a similar journey.

The Diocesan Review was our moment to pull into dry dock, to examine carefully the state of our metaphorical boat.

The Diocesan Renewal has been the process of making the necessary repairs to carry us forward for years to come.

As I reflected on the themes of the day, I was struck by how closely they resembled the work already underway here in Lismore. We spoke about the importance of action, liturgy and the Eucharist, the sacraments, formation, lay participation, encounter with Christ, and the primacy of building relationships rather than structures. We spoke of radical hospitality, prayer, witness, nourishing

the interior life, collaboration, transparent and accessible communication, and a genuine place for young people and families. These themes reflect initiatives in our own diocese such as Regional Parish Collaboration, Youth Ministry, the Diocesan Pastoral Council, the Senior Leadership Program, lay led liturgy, and our communications renewal.

Synodality is about the renewal of ecclesial practice.

We gathered as pilgrims: uncertain about what would emerge, and dependent on the grace of God. This is, of course, where the Holy Spirit does its finest work. We asked that the Spirit open our ears before our mouths, that we walk together genuinely, and that we remain attentive to where we were being led.

As Archbishop Patrick reminded us: the Spirit is not

a strategy or a program.

Our task was not to direct the Spirit, but to be open to it.

During the Synod, I felt something that is difficult to put into words and yet immediately recognisable: a sense of joy and hope.

Archbishop Patrick noted words that stayed with me: “The Spirit is moving.

There is something wonderful happening here today.”

I left Adelaide with a renewed conviction that this is precisely what it means to be together on the way.

Not arriving, not having all the answers, but walking forward in faith, attentive to the Spirit, and in the company of a Church that is alive.

And perhaps the greatest gift of that day was the reminder that in Adelaide, in Lismore, and in local Churches across this vast country, we are making that journey together.

100 years

Faith, learning and community at Mount St Patrick College

For 100 years, Mount St Patrick College, Murwillumbah has stood as a lantern on the hill, shaped by faith, learning and a deep sense of community, and carried forward by generations who have called it home.

M

ount St Patrick High School first opened as a one classroom, one teacher co-educational school with 25 students.

From these modest beginnings on its original site, the college has grown into a large and vibrant Catholic school community. 100 years later, it continues to operate on that same site, remains co-educational, and is still formed by the Presentation charism, the enduring legacy of the Presentation Sisters.

Today the college has more than 45 classrooms, approximately 820 students and 76 teachers.

remarkable, not only in size but in spirit. It is a story shaped by faith, struggle, sacrifice, community, spirit and tradition, which together have formed the college into a high quality Catholic educational community.

This centenary year has also been marked by the publication of A History of Mount St Patrick College Murwillumbah, a time capsule of the college’s first 100 years.

The book preserves the people, events and memories that might otherwise have been lost, and honours the parish priests, Presentation Sisters, parishioners, parents and staff who have all

contributed to the college’s development. It notes that their efforts are firmly embedded in the college’s DNA. At the heart of the centenary celebrations, Principal Gavin Dykes reflects on the identity of the college and its spiritual foundation. He describes Mount St Patrick College as “a lantern on the hill”, a place that offers guidance, strength and leadership to students, families and the wider community.

“I reminded the students that this whole year is a milestone event that won’t be repeated until 2126,” Gavin reflects.

“We stand on the shoulders of giants, of Presentation Sisters, staff, parishioners, and former students who have contributed to make this school not only the light on the hill, but the light that shines the life and love of God into the world around us,” he adds.

“We look forward in hope to be the witness of Christ in our lives, to be beacons of light from the lantern on the hill, to always go one step beyond, for another 100 years.”

The centenary celebrations brought together past and present students, staff, families, clergy and friends of the college. School tours, historical 31

displays, a commemorative dinner and the book launch invited reflection on a century of Catholic education in Murwillumbah, while also celebrating the living community the college remains. A special parish Mass strengthened the bond between school and parish that has sustained the college since its foundation.

The spiritual highlight was a special Mass celebrated

by Bishop Greg Homeming, together with Fr Peter Wood, Fr Anthony Lemon, Fr Paul McDonald, Fr David Gilbey and Fr Richard Foley.

Fr Michael Alcock and Fr Joe Guinea, both past students of the college, also celebrated the Mass. Fr Michael is also a former school captain and teacher, reflecting the ongoing continuity between the school’s past and present.

In his address, Bishop Greg reinforced pride, identity and belonging in Catholic education: “I am very proud and happy to be here.

The greatest thing that Murwillumbah has is the Catholic schools. Be proud of what you are. Great schools are great because students are proud to be members of the school. I proudly stand with you.”

Mount St Patrick College was founded under the guidance of the Presentation Sisters, inspired by Nano Nagle in eighteenth century Ireland.

Nano devoted her life to educating those most in need, believing deeply in faith and learning. Her vision travelled to Australia and took root in Murwillumbah, where the 32

sisters arrived in the late nineteenth century.

The Irish Presentation tradition continues to shape the college’s identity, with its values of courage, hospitality, justice, and service woven through daily life. While education has evolved over time, the mission remains unchanged: To form young people grounded in faith, committed to learning, and inspired to serve others.

What makes Mount St Patrick College distinctive is its strong sense of continuity.

Generations of families have passed through its gates, and many former students now return as staff, continuing a living tradition of belonging that strengthens the College across time.

A key feature of the centenary was the launch of A History of Mount St Patrick College Murwillumbah, written by former Principal Tony Daly, who led the college from 1999 to 2015. In the book’s introduction, he reflects simply and modestly on the College’s journey, noting its continuity on the original site and its co-educational identity.

He writes: “The transformation is a remarkable story… stories of faith, struggle, sacrifice, community, spirit and tradition have combined over the last one hundred years to make Mount St Patrick College what it is today, a high quality Catholic educational community.”

He acknowledges those who have shaped the college over time, and concludes that

their contribution is “firmly embedded in the College’s DNA.” The publication, he notes, also serves as a record for future generations to better understand the unique qualities of the college.

Across the celebrations, historical displays brought the past to life, while school tours allowed alumni to reconnect with familiar spaces. The centenary dinner provided an atmosphere of gratitude and shared memory, with stories flowing across generations.

As the celebrations concluded, there was a shared sense that this centenary was not only about looking back, but recognising a living tradition still unfolding. The light first carried by the Presentation Sisters continues to shine through every student, staff member and family connected to the college.

One hundred years on, Mount St Patrick College remains a place where faith is nurtured, learning is valued and community is cherished. Guided by the vision of Nano Nagle and the enduring Presentation tradition, it continues to stand as a lantern on the hill, a light that has guided generations and will continue to shine into the future with hope and gratitude.

2006 alumnae and Leader of Evangelisation, Grace Molloy looks back on what makes Mount St Patrick College so special.

I

began high school at Mount St Patrick College in 2001 as a shy year 7 student, eager to impress and terrified of getting into trouble. I was never in trouble, probably because I was too afraid to be.

I would constantly check my diary to make sure I was in the correct uniform and had everything I needed. I can laugh about it now, but that was me.

I graduated in 2006, but my connection with the college has never really left me.

Even when I walked out those gates as a young adult, something of this place stayed with me. I always had a quiet sense that this was where I was meant to be.

Mount St Patrick College has never just been a school to me. It has been a place that shaped who I am, formed my sense of purpose, and quietly called me back long before I understood it.

One of the most influential people in my school years was my geography teacher, Marc Lionnet. I admired him and feared him in equal measure. He expected a lot, but he also taught with fairness, discipline and care.

I was privileged to complete my final teaching practicum under his mentorship, and the lessons he gave have stayed with me for life.

straightforward, but I always carried Mount St Patrick College with me and always knew, quietly, that I would return.

I still remember forgetting a homework sheet and pretending I was sick because I was so nervous about facing him. Years later, as an adult on my teaching practicum, I told him this story. He simply asked, “What was the lesson?”

Before I could answer, he said, “You never forgot again.”

He also often said, “Even if you get angry, always apologise to your students.”

Those words have shaped the teacher I am today.

I came back to the college as a teacher in 2017. Since then I have taught music, english, religion and HSIE, and in 2023 I began my role as leader of school evangelisation.

It is a privilege to now work alongside staff who once taught me, current students, parents, our local primary schools and the Sacred Heart Parish. This is a true community of faith and life.

After school I studied business and events management and worked as a beauty therapist for 10 years while studying and working in different roles. My path was not

because it gives meaning, hope and direction, especially when life feels uncertain.

It reminds young people they are seen, known and loved

by God. At the centre of my own faith journey is my grandmother, Nellie Walls. She was my model of faith, love, and service. To this day I still sit in her seat at Sacred Heart Church in Murwillumbah.

Everything I know about faith began with her quiet example.

When I am asked what makes Mount St Patrick College so special, I usually say it is the feeling. It is something you

cannot manufacture or fully explain. It is found in the care of staff, many of whom once taught me, the spirit of students, the trust of families, and the connection with our local Catholic primary schools and the parish. It is a place where faith is lived in ordinary moments and where people are gently met where they are.

This is a true community of faith and life.

I congratulate Mount St Patrick College on 100 years of light, and I pray it continues to shine brightly for generations to come.

One in Christ: Walking together towards World Mission Sunday As we journey towards the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday on 18 October 2026, the Holy Father invites us to renew our missionary commitment as one people united in Christ.

T

hrough prayer, solidarity, and acts of love, we are reminded that mission is not reserved for a few. Through our baptism, each of us is called to be a missionary disciple, bringing Christ’s hope and compassion into our families, communities and the wider world.

As the pope’s international mission agency in Australia, Catholic Mission is helping this call resonate across the country, inviting parishioners, families, friends, schools, and communities to celebrate this centenary year in a spirit of faith, joy and renewal.

Throughout World Mission Month, there are many ways to take part. Students can engage in Socktober initiatives

and discover how Catholic Social Teaching comes to life through action and solidarity.

Parish communities can participate in mission appeals, prayer opportunities and local celebrations. Others may choose to support community fundraising events or simply take time to learn more about the lives and experiences of our brothers and sisters around the world.

At the heart of World Mission Sunday is a simple yet profound invitation: To love and care for one another as Christ loves us.

In his Message for World Mission Sunday 2026, Pope Leo XIV reminds us: “The mission of the disciples and the Church as a whole is to continue the mission of Christ in the Holy Spirit: A mission born of love, lived in love, and leading to love. In fact, the Lord himself, in his great prayer to the Father before his Passion, after invoking unity among his disciples, concludes: ‘so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them’ (Jn 17:26).”

These words carry particular significance coming from a pope who experienced missionary life firsthand during his years of ministry in Peru. Yet mission is not only found in

distant places. It is present in every act of kindness, every gesture of compassion, and every effort to accompany those in need within our own communities. As Jenifer Fernandes, Diocesan Director of Lismore and Maitland/ Newcastle, reflects: “Mission, to me, is simply walking in Christ’s footsteps and responding to His call, wherever it may lead. I am grateful to be part of a legacy that has inspired others on this beautiful journey. Mission transforms not only the lives we touch, but also our own.”

As we celebrate 100 years of World Mission Sunday, let us come together as one Church, united in Christ and united in mission, answering the call to share God’s love with the world.

Dr Berenice Kerr RSM (1942–2026)

Dr Berenice Mary Kerr RSM was a woman of deep faith and courage, anchored by a profound love of Christ.

A gifted scholar and passionate supporter of Catholic education, she brought warmth and genuine humanity to every encounter.

Her life bore witness to the Sisters of Mercy values of compassion and service.

Berenice died peacefully on 4 March 2026, in the 60th year of her Religious profession.

“Life for me means Christ” and “Yes Father”.

Berenice was born in Kyogle on 2 October 1945, and was the youngest of seven children of Herbert and Anne (nee Lawler). Strong family bonds supported her throughout her life, particularly her relationships with her nieces and nephews.

Berenice’s life was devoted to learning, teaching, and leadership. She served in Catholic schools in Casino, Kempsey, and Grafton, holding roles as principal and deputy principal. Her service included work as an education consultant with the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Office; Commissioner of the Catholic Education Commission NSW; Chair of the Commission’s Standing Committee on Educational Policy; Director and later Chair of Trinity Catholic College, Lismore; and member of the Education Committee

After primary schooling at St Brigid’s in Kyogle, Berenice attended St Mary’s College in Grafton as a boarding student.

She joined the Grafton Sisters of Mercy Congregation on 9 February 1964 and was professed on 12 September 1966, taking the mottos 38

A distinguished scholar, Berenice earned a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Oxford. Her doctoral thesis, Religious Life for Women c.1100–c.1350, was published by Oxford University Press in 1999.

of the Council of Leaders of Religious Institutes NSW. She also served as a board member of St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Lismore.

She later moved to the Diocese of Ballarat, making a profound contribution to their schools. She became a foundational member of the Diocese of Ballarat Catholic Education Limited board, where she served as Deputy Chair and as a member of both the Learning and Teaching Committee and the Catholic Identity and Mission Committee until her retirement in December 2025.

We give thanks for Berenice’s devotion, service, and leadership across the diocese, and enduring legacy across Catholic education in Australia.

Frank Hannigan KSG (1951-2026)

The Diocese of Lismore deeply mourns the passing of Frank Hannigan KSG, who died on Friday 19 June 2026.

Born on 7 July 1951 in Casino, Frank was educated at St Mary’s Primary School, Casino, and St John’s College, Woodlawn. On 23 August 1975, Frank married Lorena Yager, and later had five children: Nadene, Brett, Monique, Renee, and Joseph.

r Bernadette Fitzgerald LCM, serving as our appointed canonical delegate, will represent our Lismore congregation for any matters requiring Vatican approval. While this transition means that the Lismore Presentation Sisters do not currently have a traditional congregational leader or leadership team, it opens a peaceful new chapter for us.

With twenty ageing senior members remaining in our beloved congregation, the sisters thoughtfully chose to invite the support of Emerging Futures Collaborative Limited.

This organisation was formed specifically to walk alongside religious congregations in Australia, assisting them with management when they no longer have the capacity to oversee day-to-day administration. While this represents a profound

change for our remaining Lismore Presentation Sisters, it is a transition we need to respect and trust as we journey forward.

Looking back, the Presentation Sisters recall, with immense gratitude, the support of everyone throughout the parishes, Catholic schools of the Diocese of Lismore, and the Archdiocese of Sydney over the past 140 years.

Our shared ministry, which largely flourished in primary and secondary education, music teaching, and later expanded into other professions, has allowed us to respond wholeheartedly to the needs of our contemporary society.

The gift was ours in return.

As we reflect fondly on our past, we look forward with hope to the continuation of the

spirit of our foundress, Nano Nagle. Nano saw a pressing need in her time to reach out and assist others, possessing a bold, beautiful heart that was ready to respond. Today, we honour that same courage and commitment.

Our International Presentation Association is deeply grateful to the younger women and men who continue to carry Nano’s spirit forward across Australia and throughout the world. Their enthusiasm is truly inspiring.

May our Presentation community, in these modern times, continue to bring peace and comfort to many.

May the lantern continue to shed its light.
