In addition to stressing academic excellence, Catholic schools strive to be accessible to all students. They focus on the education of the whole student, not just his or her intellect. They are characterized by genuine community in which all are respected.

We also recently recognized Mrs. Margie Alexander by inducting her into the CHS Hall of Fame. Margie has served CHS for 33 years in a variety of roles, and has always put others’ needs ahead of her own.

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE THE FIRST SEMESTER of the 2018-2019 school year was one filled with excitement, success and instructional accomplishments.

Many of those moments are highlighted within this issue of Bear Facts and I am thankful to all of our faculty, staff and students, for their roles in this outstanding semester.

In particular, I would like to highlight the exceptional response that our students gave to service needs within our local community. In November, CHS held an emergency food drive to respond to the serious deficit of food in the Baton Rouge Food Bank. Because of the various natural disasters around the country, such as Hurricane Michael and the wildfires in California, food banks around the country - including the Baton Rouge Food Bank, shared their resources with areas that were hit the hardest. As a result, our local food bank experienced its own shortage and Catholic High responded to their call for assistance. Students and faculty were asked to bring in canned goods or monetary donations, and a class competition was held to inspire participation. In addition, if the entire school contributed 20,000 pounds of food, then faculty and students could dress in casual clothes during mid-term exams. The response was tremendous and we far exceeded our goal.

There is no doubt that the service opportunities that our students undertake on a regular basis are enriching their own lives, as well as the lives of those they are serving, all while allowing them to put their faith into action. I am proud of our accomplishments and look forward to sharing further service experiences with you in the future.

May 2019 be a year full of God’s blessings and gratitude for all that we are given.

Another success was our Toys for Tots Drive. The main lobby of the school was filled with donated toys throughout the Christmas season and our contributions were able to provide a wonderful Christmas for the needy children in our local community.

Catholic High School’s service to the community has continued and on Jan. 15, we celebrated with Gabby Wicks and her family as they were given the keys to their new Habitat home. This was Catholic High’s third solo Habitat build, with work taking place in August and September of 2018 over four weekends and through exceedingly hot temperatures. During those weekends, CHS faculty and students built the home alongside Gabby and the Habitat staff.

On Jan. 15, with the CHS community present to celebrate, Gabby walked into her new home that unbeknownst to her, was also filled with furniture, groceries, appliances, curtains and everything else needed to complete a home. Once again, Catholic High partnered with Warrick Dunn Charities and his Home for the Holidays program. Through the generosity of Warrick Dunn ’93 and his commitment to providing homes for single parents, Gabby received not only a completely furnished home, but a portion of

Building a Future Catholic High School partners with Habitat for Humanity and Warrick Dunn ’93 to complete its third Habitat home sponsored by CHS.

THE CATHOLIC HIGH School community welcomed Gabby Wicks and her two sons into their new home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2019. Former NFL running back and CHS Grizzly Greats Athletic Hall of Fame member, Warrick Dunn ’93, partnered with CHS, Habitat for Humanity and Aaron’s Furniture to give the family the surprise of a lifetime.

Dunn and his Home for the Holidays program through his charity, Warrick Dunn Charities (WDC), have been serving the community for more than 20 years. WDC has awarded millions in home furnishings, food and other donations to single-parent families and children across the nation to combat poverty, hunger, and ensure families have comfortable surroundings and basic necessities to improve their quality of life.

Dunn’s charity fully supplied and furnished the Wicks home with everything the family could possibly need. From wall décor, electronics and bedroom furniture, to family board games, toothbrushes and groceries, the home was truly move-in-ready. On top of all that, Dunn contributed $5,000 toward closing costs.

“Through the efforts of Habitat for Humanity, CHS and Warrick Dunn Charities, Gabby and her sons received the keys to their completely furnished beautiful home. It was a privilege for members of the CHS community to be with her yesterday and share in her joy.”

During the 2017-2018 school year, CHS announced it would sponsor and build a house for Habitat for Humanity, making it the third house sponsored by CHS. The student body committed to raise $50,000 and Habitat paid the remaining $25,000 for the build. CHS students, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers began the build in fall 2018 with Habitat crew and the homeowner, Gabby.

“The presentation of the Habitat home to Gabby and her family was a tremendous moment for both the Wicks family and Catholic High School,” added Harvey. “I was particularly proud that the CHS students in attendance were the ones to hand over the keys to Gabby. It was a special moment for all of us and we can’t wait to begin the process for the next Habitat build.”

Preparation + Opportunity = Success Catholic High School’s mission statement includes the phrase “In an environment of Academic Excellence.” While the means to this may have taken different forms over the years, CHS has always remained committed to preparing young men for college and beyond through a rigorous college preparatory academic program. As standardized tests like the ACT and SAT become more important for college admissions and scholarships, the school has recognized the importance of preparing students to excel on these assessments. In spring 2016, CHS implemented a test preparation program that incorporated five dedicated test prep sessions each semester for every student.

Students are divided into groups based on their previous test scores and current course schedules. Each group has a tailored study program with lessons that target specific skills and concepts. Faculty members lead each session and guide students through a series of activities and practice tests to help develop skills and master concepts. Each lesson also includes several test-taking strategies and information on how to interpret scores, how to perform well in the test environment and ways to improve on time management.

Even though it’s only been three years since the program’s inception, the benefits are beginning to show. The current seniors were freshmen when the program started and over the course of their four-year career at CHS, they have received 30 hours of dedicated test preparation. The results are clear. There are currently six students in the class of 2019 who have scored the highest possible score of 36 on the ACT. In fact, the entire class has the highest average ACT score in the last seven years at CHS — 26.3. In 2018, the national ACT average was 20.8 and Louisiana’s average was 19.2.

A phrase often quoted at CHS is, “Everything you do, teaches.”

The commitment of the administration, the resources available for students and their efforts, and the entire staff’s participation has been essential in the success of this program.

In addition to helping students prepare for the tests, the program is also designed to increase the faculty and staff’s awareness and appreciation of these type of assessments, and the challenges students face when taking them. Every teacher, regardless of their primary subject area, teaches the test prep lessons to become familiar with all aspects and subject matter of each test. How my Religious Education is Influencing my Life

Senior Kyle Becnel’s essay was selected as Catholic High School’s winning essay in the Fireside Catholic Publishing Scholarship contest. His essay will move on to the next level where five winners will be selected to receive a scholarship.

MOTHER TERESA once stated, “Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.” Now a saint, Mother Teresa is one of many Christian individuals that provide the Christian masses with an example of love through service to others. In an effort to follow Christ’s example and inspire students to serve their community, Catholic schools began to require that students complete a certain number of service hours. Unfortunately, service hours have become something that many students dread doing and some even try to cheat their way out. My middle and high schools are both Catholic schools that require their students to complete a certain number of service hours depending on their grade level. In fulfilling my service hour obligation through my years in Catholic schools, this aspect of my religious education has inspired me to continue to volunteer and help the less fortunate in the community, and has given me a dedication to serving in the community.

When I first began completing service hours, I got my hours by altar serving at Sunday Mass. For me, altar serving was a fun and engaging way to participate in the Mass, and it almost did not seem like a service. I altar served for about four years before I stopped enjoying the job. At the time, it started to feel like altar serving was more an obligation than something I actually wanted to do.

Knowing that such an attitude was not helping me come closer to Christ and His mission, I decided to stop altar serving. In its place, I used the hours I had accumulated from tutoring. The previous year, one of my friends had approached me and asked if I would be willing to help him out in math class. I felt the pull to help him out, so I decided to start tutoring him. To this day, I still give him help in math when he needs it, and the hours spent bent over the textbook together has strengthened my relationship with him.

During my junior year, however, my school required that I complete hours that were in direct contact with the poor or

otherwise underprivileged in society. In an effort to get valid hours, I decided to start visiting the local St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room and volunteer my time there. In all honesty, I was expecting to not enjoy myself in the least — simply suffer my way through the hours. What I experienced, though, was quite different. I arrived quite nervous and unsure of what to expect, but the workers kindly instructed me on what to do. They had me hand out the Bags of Hope, which are snack bags the patrons take on the way out the door. As the patrons walked in, their smiling faces and grateful eyes put a smile on my face, and the other volunteers and workers at St. Vincent de Paul made me laugh throughout the shift.

Driving away after I had completed my first shift, I felt happy and at peace. For the first time, I felt like what I was doing for service was having an affect on greater than just me and my close circle of friends and family, and that I was truly spreading Christ’s love into the world. I have, to this day, continued to serve at St. Vincent de Paul, and I knew from the moment I left that first day that I would want to continue doing similar service even after I graduated from high school.

In completing my service hours throughout middle school and high school, I was able to see Christ working through myself, and I was able to make a difference in my own community. I have also been inspired to continue serving my community into the professional field by combining my desire to serve and the intellectual gifts I have been given by exploring the medical field as a profession. Without my school having the requirement to do service hours, I know that I would not have been able to experience the happiness I have gotten from serving at St. Vincent de Paul and through tutoring my friend because I simply would not have had the drive to volunteer. It is my wish that, in the future, I can continue to serve those around me in some capacity and bring Christ’s love to all others in my community.

One of the main objectives of the Big Read is to create a conversation between students and faculty, and provide a platform across subject areas for activities and projects that highlight different themes throughout the book. This past summer, the book selected was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope

by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Set in Malawi, Africa, William Kamkwamba recounts the true story of his youth and his mission to construct a windmill from scraps to produce electricity for his entire village. His story is a lesson in personal perseverance, determination in the face of adversity and triumph.

Bringing the struggles in the book even closer to home, on his recent visit, Brother Chris Sweeney, S.C. ’84, director of Mission Amatongas, a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school in Mozambique, Africa, shared with the CHS community the similarities between the struggles of Amatongas and the challenges William faced in his own village. Since arriving at the school in February 2011, Brother Chris has worked tirelessly to provide even the most basic needs for the students including running water, electricity, textbooks and food. His incredible success is attributed to his hard work, faith and the generosity of many people. The CHS community has played a role in that success with student-led fundraisers to support Mission Amatongas.

In addition, members of the CHS community sponsor students to help offset the cost of school tuition, school uniforms, and room and board. In appreciation, students keep in touch with their sponsors with photographs and letters throughout the year.

CHS Bruin Broadcast Network Makes the Leap to Live Television “IN 3, 2, 1 and we are on the air.” You would expect to hear a countdown like that if you were sitting in the control room of a live television broadcast – right? But what if you were sitting in a production trailer with a group of high school students outside a football stadium on a Friday night? Probably not, unless you were a member of Catholic High School’s Bruin Broadcast Network (BBN). BBN, is a student-run media club that produces live event streaming for local broadcast.

One of more than 30 extracurricular offerings at CHS, BBN was started in 2011 by four ambitious CHS students who wanted to live stream a baseball game. With one camera, a couple of laptops, some luck and a lot of technical know-how, the students launched what is now known as the Bruin Broadcast Network.

In fall 2013, BBN partnered with Wi-Fi Sports Network to host its live stream and began broadcasting football games on a regular basis. Today, the club has grown to more than 40 students, and produces a wide variety of live streaming events including football games, basketball games, baseball games, and choir and band concerts.

The club’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In April 2018, a discussion between two CHS alumni and former classmates, Dixon McMakin ’05 and Michael Shingleton ’05, hatched the idea of BBN’s football production being broadcast live on television in addition to being streamed online. “Dixon, who is one of the announcers on BBN’s football radio broadcast, spoke with Michael, a WBRZ news anchor, about WBRZ broadcasting the live stream on its station,” said Ben DiPalma ’00, CHS assistant athletic director.

Station executives were a bit hesitant with the idea, since producing live sporting events is one of the hardest productions to broadcast with seasoned professionals, let alone high school students. “For a while, it didn’t look like it was going to happen,” added DiPalma. “We showed them some of our archived

productions, and they quickly realized the students’ skill sets were far beyond that of a high school club.” By late summer, WBRZ had agreed to broadcast BBN’s production of the CHS 2018 football season on its sister station WBTR Channel 19.

The first broadcast went live on WBTR on Aug. 30, 2018, with the Catholic High School versus Parkview Baptist game. The inaugural broadcast garnered nearly 6,000 viewers. As the season progressed and the students became more comfortable and experienced in their expanded roles, so did the broadcast. “With each game, we introduced new elements to the production,” said DiPalma. “We added a press box camera for pregame, halftime and postgame interviews, as well as remote halftime and postgame interviews with coach Fertitta.”

As the production grew, so did its viewership. On Sept. 14, 2018, more than 18,000 viewers tuned in to WBTR to watch the Bears take on University High School. By the season’s end, the broadcast was averaging 11,540 viewers per game, with a season total of 115,397 viewers.

The level of success took everyone by surprise. “I knew we had some talented students, and I knew what they were capable of doing, but even I was blown away at what they accomplished,” noted DiPalma. Station executives were as equally impressed and offered to extend the BBN partnership beyond football season to include basketball, baseball and soccer games, as well as some extracurricular events. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, WBTR broadcast BBN’s production of the CHS choir and band Christmas Concert. “I am so proud of these students. They are unbelievably talented, and I can’t wait to see where this project takes them,” added DiPalma.

The mission of the Bruin Broadcast Network is to provide a platform for students to develop and display their skills in broadcasting, film production and graphic design.

National Merit Scholarship Program THE NATIONAL MERIT Scholarship Program (NMSP) is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships.

Roughly 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the nation entered the 2019 NMSP by taking the 2017

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. For the 2018-2019 NMSP, CHS had 10 Finalists, one Semifinalist, six Commended and two National Hispanic scholars.

NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST Approximately 16,000 seniors nationwide qualified as a National Merit Semifinalist. The pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Of that group, 15,000 seniors are notified of their Finalist standings. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.

NATIONAL HISPANIC SCHOLARS Students qualify for the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) by scoring in the top 2.5 percent on the PSAT among all Hispanic and Latino test-takers in the region. Each year, the NHRP recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the test.

Advanced Placement Scholars 63 CHS Alumni and Students Named AP Scholars by College Board SIXTY-THREE STUDENTS in the Catholic High School Class of 2018, 2019 and 2020 have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the collegelevel Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

Of those 63 students, 15 qualified for AP Scholar with Distinction Award, 17 qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award and 31 qualified for the AP Scholar Award.

A student qualifies for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP

Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. To qualify for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, a student must earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Finally, to qualify for the AP Scholar Award, a student must complete three or more AP Examinations with scores of 3 or higher.

Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement or both, based on successful performances on the AP Exams.

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL welcomed Margie Alexander into the CHS Hall of Fame on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018. The CHS Hall of Fame Induction and Thirty-Fourth Annual Founders Banquet was held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center in downtown Baton Rouge.

CHS also honored the individuals who have attained the status of CHS Perpetual Founder this year. They are men and women who have donated $100,000 or more to Catholic High School during their lifetime.

Those recognized as Perpetual Founders were Cajun Industries, L.L.C., Mr. and Mrs. Gary J. Lacombe, Mr. and Mrs. Michael O. Rourke, and Dr. and Mrs. Richard R. Vath.

MARGIE ARCENEAUX ALEXANDER was born in Assumption Parish. She was the daughter of the late Blanche Delaune and Louis L. Arceneaux. Her father managed sugar cane plantations most of his life. At the age of five, the family moved to St. Emma Plantation, three miles south of Donaldsonville, LA. From first through mid-year of the sixth grade, she attended St. Vincent’s Academy in Donaldsonville run by the Sisters of Charity. At the age of 11, the family moved to Smithfield Plantation in West Baton Rouge Parish. She attended Holy Family School in Port Allen, LA and was taught by the Marianites of Holy Cross sisters through eighth grade. She graduated from Port Allen High School in 1959 and was the recipient of The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award. She served as editor of the school newspaper, business manager of the yearbook, president of FTA, treasurer of FBLA and member of the Beta Club and 4-H. Margie attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (then SLI) in Lafayette, LA, and later attended Louisiana State University.

From 1960 through 1964, she served as secretary to the Secretary of Union National Life Insurance Company.

assistant leader of a Girl Scout troop. In 1977, the family moved to Richmond, VA, and in December 1980, they returned home to the country outside of Port Allen.

In August of 1981, Margie went to work for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. She was assistant to the Comptroller and the Vicar for Finance. On June 6, 1985, she began work at Catholic High School as an assistant in the Finance Office. She was named Treasurer in 1987 and 24 years later, she was named Director of Legacy Gifts, and later, Grants Coordinator, CHS Capital Campaign Coordinator and Archivist. She serves as Financial Advisor for the CHS Mothers’ Club. Margie serves on the Investment Committee of the CHS Foundation Board, Budget Committee of the Catholic High School Board and Financial Aid Committee.

Margie is a member of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish and serves on the Social Responsibility Committee as chair of the Bereavement sub-committee and Joseph Home project sub-committee, a group that provides monthly meals for men who have been incarcerated. Margie and Ralph have been married for 54 years and are the proud parents of a daughter, Stephanie Maxwell (David), a 1985 graduate of SJA and a son, David Alexander (Amy), a CHS graduate of 1988. They have five grandchildren to whom she is known as “Maggie” – Alex Maxwell SSC ’12, Madison Maxwell, Logan Maxwell, Ryan Alexander and Charlotte Alexander.

In 1964, she married Ralph Alexander. The first years involved several moves around Louisiana. The first to Iowa, LA where Ralph taught school and Margie worked for Boy’s Village. Next, they moved to New Orleans where Margie worked for Pan American Life Insurance Company and then back to the country in West Baton Rouge Parish and a return to Union National Life.

During these years, she served as president of the West Baton Rouge Garden Club and Secretary of the West Side Women’s Club. Ralph’s career eventually took the family to Williamsville, NY, in 1972. One of Margie’s proudest achievements was organizing and serving as Chair of a parent volunteer committee of 122 formed to tutor students at Maple West Elementary School in reading. She was elected President of the parent’s organization and served as co-leader of a Brownie Troop and CHS President Gene Tullier and 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Margie Alexander.

An Investment in Student Success Continuing a strong culture of giving through The Fund for Catholic High School THE FUND FOR Catholic High School, has served as a vital source of support to the overall operations at Catholic High School, helping to bridge the gap between tuition income and the true cost of a CHS education.

As of Feb. 20, 2019, the Office of Advancement has reported participation in giving from parents, alumni and friends reaching $411,361.30, which represents 62 percent of its $665,000 goal for the 2018-2019 school year. Gifts designated from the annual fund have served as a sound investment in the school’s mission to provide a superior Catholic education for the past 34 years. Today, it continues to support the school’s annual operating budget, as well as need-based tuition assistance, technology and improved programs and initiatives that allow our young men to learn and grow. “Participation is paramount in The Fund year after year,” said Director of Advancement Jamie Segar ’90. “Our students are our number one priority, and in order for us to provide the quality education expected at CHS, it requires a shared commitment from our community to support and impact the holistic experience our students receive.”

AGenerous Soul Will Prosper THE JOHN HENRY PERKINS MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

JOHN HENRY PERKINS never walked the halls of Catholic High School as a student, but the principles that he embraced share surprising similarities with the mission of the school. Though he was not an alumnus, he felt so closely connected to the school that he proudly drove around town with the “#1 CHS” license plate. Throughout his life, Perkins espoused a creed of diligence, sincere engagement with others, and generosity. When his grandsons—Chip Uffman ’96 and Connor Uffman ’02—attended Catholic High School, Perkins felt an immediate connection with the school. At the time of his passing, in the first months of 2018, John Perkins expressed his desire to leave a legacy at CHS, inspiring the Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund that now bears his name.

One principle Perkins shared with Catholic High School was diligence. Born in Forest Hills, Louisiana, in 1933, Perkins grew-up in poverty. Like many in that generation, his family’s possessions were few and their opportunities were limited.

Despite working hard to attend college, Perkins found higher education did not quite suit his humble, shy personality. After a decisive negative experience with a professor, he sold his books, quit college, and went to work at Gulf States Utilities.

While his limited experience with formal education yielded mixed results, Perkins sought opportunities where he could find them, climbing the ranks to supervisor at Monochem, sales representative at Betz and Olin, and eventually founding his own company, Utilities Consulting. “He really represented the American dream,” says granddaughter Becky Eldredge, a 1998 graduate of Saint Joseph’s Academy. “He was self-made, a hard worker, and pulled himself up by the bootstraps.”

Accordingly, Perkins appreciated Catholic High School’s dedication to hard work. In particular, he recognized the impact that the CHS faculty and staff had on the work ethic of students. He admired those like Coach Pete Boudreaux ’59 who encouraged students not only to learn classroom material but also to acquire the practical life skills that would enable them to succeed. While Perkins lacked such opportunities during his own life, he was continually impressed by the way that CHS empowered students to take control of their own destiny through diligence.

In addition to hard work, John Perkins sought to build close, sincere relationships with others. When he took a

Dale Carnegie seminar as a young man, it motivated him to overcome his natural shyness and changed his life forever.

Not only did his business relationships improve, but his newfound extroversion boosted his personal relationships as well. Perkins had always been affable, and relationships were central to his life. “He wasn’t involved in many official organizations,” says Eldredge. “He was involved in others’ lives.” Perkins kept in touch with even his most distant relatives, visited sick friends in the hospital daily, and placed importance on the needs of others. His inspiring partnership with his wife of nearly 66 years, Carolyn, was a testament to his dedication to personal relationships. Chip Uffman remembers well his grandfather’s connection with others, noting, “He took a genuine interest in others. He always asked, ‘What do you need? What problem can I help you solve?’” Perkins never forgot where he came from or who had been a part of his journey.

“ Be Giving, Always Be Giving" With such an approach to relationships, it should come as no surprise that the tightknit community at Catholic High School impressed Perkins. He enjoyed attending events, especially cross country, where he saw first-hand that the CHS community shares close bonds. Perkins praised the kinds of relationships CHS enabled for his grandchildren and other students, knowing that these connections would enrich their lives immeasurably.

Perkins’ relationships concentrated on a simple value: generosity. Grandson Connor Uffman explains about Perkins, “When we asked him what he wanted to be remembered for, he always responded that he wanted others to strive to be generous givers and gracious receivers.”

Perkins shared abundantly. He shipped gifts across country to friends and relatives; his grandchildren recall that they had to be careful when they told him they liked something because he would probably send them way more than they needed.

He treated people incredibly well and got to know them. At

his funeral, there were 18 pallbearers, a testament to how his friends reciprocated his generosity. Most of all, he enjoyed giving time to others, especially at parties where he was always the last one awake. “He abided by the rule that you should never eat a meal alone,” remembers Connor. “He shared his time and his blessings with others.”

He was joyous that his grandsons benefited from CHS’s integration of values and morals into the curriculum, especially how CHS cultivated in students a responsibility to help others. He saw himself as sharing in that generosity as he continually gave to the school’s various fundraising efforts.

The spirit of generosity is another principle embraced by both John Perkins and Catholic High School. Perkins appreciated the CHS mission to pushback against the self-centric attitude so prevalent in today’s world through the school’s charitable

others, and develop a spirit of generosity. Perkins recognized that his grandsons and their friends, many of whom he knew very well, were prepared for lives full of gratitude and generosity, achievement and success. John Perkins is also proof that the CHS community is vaster than students, faculty and alumni alone, and that it is a community with the power to change lives. The Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund represents a manifestation of Perkins’ desire to contribute to CHS’s mission and a way for him to inspire others to donate to a cause in which he strongly believed.

The Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation Awards Two Grants to Catholic High School Photo: Irene W. and C.B. Pennington

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL is happy to announce that The Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation awarded two grants to the school. One for the security plan that was established. The second grant is for Advancing the Mission – the Capital Campaign for the school.

Safety of students is of paramount importance. Security of our campus is on the mind of everyone today due to recent events at schools around the country. CHS has developed a safety plan that includes surrounding the campus with fencing and gates, and all sections of the campus are visible with cameras. The security guards’ hours have been extended and they are more visible to our faculty and students. Now in the final phase of the plan, the grant will help with the purchase of fencing and gates along Claycut Road.

The second grant awarded to the school by the Foundation is for the Advancing the Mission Capital Campaign. The campaign is for the construction of a new Student Center.

The Center will be located on the property at 720 and 808 Hearthstone, where the Advancement Office and Finance Office are presently located. Demolition of these houses is scheduled for the end of March. Groundbreaking for the new building will take place at that time.

The Student Center will house a new union and kitchen, five classrooms, the Campus Ministry Center, a conference room, a faculty work center, and a spacious student commons

featuring the Student Pavilion for outdoor dining, learning, interaction and engagement.

Claude B. “Doc” Pennington and his wife, Irene Wells Pennington, officially created the Pennington Foundation in 1982, but the story actually begins in the early 1920s. Doc Pennington began his career as a laborer in the Louisiana oil and gas industry but soon decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a practice in the field of optometry.

Following his father’s passing, Doc Pennington returned to his original passion – the oil and gas industry. He purchased Mount Pleasant Plantation, which later became adjacent to one of the largest oil and gas finds in Louisiana history.

Mr. and Mrs. Pennington were adamant in sharing their success with the community and today the board of trustees for the Foundation assures that continues to happen. As mentioned on its web page, the Foundation “strives to continue to not just identify problems in our community, but to identify the unique assets of the South, and to invest in creative solutions that create impact in Louisiana and the world.”

We are very grateful for these grants as it allows the school to fund special projects that are not included in the operating budget of the school.

An update for

Winter/Spring 2019

Building for the Future Have you heard the news? Catholic High School is about to begin construction on a new Student Center! Of course, it has not exactly been a secret. We have been talking about it and planning it for quite a while. In fact, we began the “not so silent,” silent phase of our Advancing the Mission campaign on Nov. 1, 2015. Since that time, we have spoken individually with literally hundreds of alumni, parents and friends who have made cash and pledge donations to date totaling $8,800,000.

On Friday, March 29, we will kick off the Student Center project with a demolition and groundbreaking ceremony. The new Student Center will be constructed on the footprint of two houses that formerly housed the school’s Finance, Advancement and Communications offices. Those offices have relocated, and the houses where they were located will come down in a brief ceremony attended by the entire student body, faculty, staff, donors and guests.

This demo and groundbreaking ceremony, however, is about more than the construction

of a new building. Even more importantly, it marks the continued commitment of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Catholic High School to the mission of forming young men in Gospel values in an environment of excellence according to Catholic tradition and in the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Fittingly, the Student Center will be named in honor of Brother Donnan Berry, S.C., a former principal of Catholic High School and a truly inspirational leader. The Campus Ministry Center will be named in honor of Ms. Judy Stewart and Mr. Jeff Nola ’94, two dedicated individuals who initiated the campus ministry program at CHS. The faculty work center will be named in honor of Mr. Greg Sollie, a former physics teacher who was loved and admired by students. By honoring Brother Donnan and others in the many other naming opportunities available for portions of the building, we seek to have the actual brick and mortar be physical reminders to students of the core values upon which our school is founded. In addition, the Student Center will be a lasting legacy of the

29 former students and their families who have helped to make it possible, and it will be a tangible symbol for current and future students of their great potential that will be nurtured within its walls.

In front of the Student Center will be a Student Pavilion that will create a partially shaded outdoor student area. Eleven columns or “Mission Pillars” will support the pavilion, and each will be named in honor of an individual or family, and will represent a core value of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

The new facility is much needed. Most of the first floor will be dedicated to student dining and food preparation areas. These activities now occur in the existing Union Building which is significantly undersized for our student population. However, the space is not designed to be exclusively for dining and food preparation. It is a multi-function space that will accommodate large group gatherings such as school convocations and award ceremonies.

The second floor will house a faculty work center, four classrooms, a special seminar classroom, and student collaboration rooms. The additional classrooms and studentteacher conference and collaboration space are especially needed, and will directly encourage the type of student-teacher interaction that most effectively facilitates the school’s mission.

Another important feature of this project is that it includes a chilled water central mechanical plant that will provide an

efficient cooling system for the Student Center and will replace the oldest and least efficient chillers on campus, the ones that currently serve the Fine Arts Building and the gym. This central plant will produce significant and long-term financial benefits for the school.

We thank the many alumni, parents, friends, and 100 percent of our faculty and staff who have so generously donated to this campaign. The support from these 354 donors is a strong affirmation of the mission of Catholic High School and the crucial role it plays in the formation of young men and leaders.

Never-the-less, with an anticipated total cost of approximately $14,000,000 for the Student Center, Student Pavilion and central mechanical plant, we still have a long way to go to fully fund this project. 1959 PATRICK CLARK retired from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston after 27 years as a teacher and principal (2017). In 1989, Clark retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

P.M. LAROSE has published his third mystery novel, “Beers Ahead.” The story, set during Halloween season 2000, continues the adventures of department store detective Jim “Beers” Biersovich.

2009 ALEX KLEINPETER, a Ph.D. candidate in biochemistry and structural biology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and a fourth generation CHS graduate, was lead author on a scientific study, “Structural analysis reveal the mechanism of inhibition of influenza virus NS1 by two antiviral compounds,� published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The study deals with improving therapies against H7N9 and other strains of influenza.

C.J. SOLAR co-wrote, “Up Down” which went No. 1 on the country billboard and media base charts this past summer. It was recorded by country artist, Morgan Wallen, and featured Florida Georgia Line. It also just received RIAA gold and platinum certification. Solar also had a No. 1 on the Texas Charts last year with the co-write with Texas artist, Kyle Parks, “What the Heaven.” This past summer, Solar opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd for two shows on their farewell tour.

GOLF CLASSIC Presented by CHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

2018 THE CATHOLIC HIGH School Alumni Association held the 29th Annual Golf Classic on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, at Santa Maria Golf Course. This year’s title sponsor was Williamson Eye Center and the Golf Classic committee chairman was Matt Doiron ’92. A great day of golf was enjoyed by 124 golfers, including 52 alumni of CHS. The $56,000 raised will support the Capital Campaign for the new Student Center.

MORE THAN 400 alumni, family members, friends, faculty and staff of CHS attended The CHS Alumni Homecoming Tailgate on Oct. 26, at Memorial Stadium. The event featured food cooked by the CHS Men’s Club, music

by Russ Joffrion, inflatables and more. The Grizzly Greats were honored before kick-off with the newest class of Grizzly Greats being introduced which included: Coach Don Hood, Dr. William Laughlin, Ryan Jummonville ’91 and Calvin Williams ’97. Members of the Alumni Band, Bruinettes, Cheerleaders, Boosters, and Flag Corps not only performed before and during the game, but they also participated in the Homecoming Court presentation.

More than 550 alumni, guests and friends of Catholic High School gathered to experience a wonderful evening of great food and beverages and exciting silent auction items. Guests were treated to samples from 30 area restaurants, caterers and beverage distributors. The event raised more than $36,000 for Catholic High School.

Perry Key ’78 Honored As Catholic High School’s 2019 Distinguished Graduate Perry Key ’78 was honored by the Diocese of Baton Rouge as Catholic High School’s 2019 Distinguished Graduate during its annual Distinguished Graduate Awards Dinner on Jan. 28, at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel.

Throughout his life, Key has served his parish in a variety of ministries. He serves as a lector, Eucharistic minister, retreat captain for Manresa, member of the Diocesan School

Board, chair of the finance committee, member of the CHS Foundation Board, member of the Grizzly Greats Athletic Hall of Fame and as a senior retreat volunteer for CHS. Sporting only 36 players, few people would have predicted the 1973 Catholic High School football team would win the district title. Coming off three consecutive losing seasons where the Bears could win no more than three wins in a season, most supporters were not expecting any significant improvement.

turnaround in the program. “Juniors came through for us and our senior group has shown leadership we were missing from other seniors in other years,” said Hannie. “Leaders like Kenny Samaha and Buddy Hoffman, and a fine attitude on the part of the entire squad are other contributing factors.”

Catholic’s 7-6 win in the jamboree over defending 4AAAA district champion Lee High School set the tone for what was to be one of CHS’ most successful football seasons. Catholic defeated Terrebonne (20-7) and Baton Rouge High School (19-16) before losing to Lutcher (6-14). Coach Barrett Murphy’s 1955 team then rolled to seven consecutive wins: Central (26-0), Redemptorist (18-6), Ouachita (21-14), Zachary (24-0), Denham Springs (14-7), Plaquemine (13-0) and Woodlawn (28-0). Catholic then fell to Amite in the state playoffs.

“Coach Murphy put in the wishbone offense in the offseason after going to Oklahoma and studying their offense,” said quarterback Emmett Vollenwelder ’74. “We were a grind-it-out offense. The other teams in Baton Rough did not know how to defend the wishbone. We had a great running back in Buddy Hoffman and a solid defense.”

The last time CHS won an outright district title was in 1937 when the team had only 13 players. In a later interview, longtime team physician, the late Dr. James Hannie ’55, commented on the

SAYING, “YES!” During the Christmas Season, the Church invites us to reflect on various aspects of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, including Mary’s courageous, faith-filled, and trusting “Yes” to becoming the mother of the world’s Savior. But wait; Luke’s narrative (Lk. 1: 26-38) begins with the angel Gabriel TELLING Mary that she will become a mother. There’s no indication that the angel ASKED Mary if she would be willing; but we can presume that somewhere in the unrecorded conversation there was a clear invitation to which Mary could have declined rather than speak her unconditional, “Let it be done…,” thereby embracing a vocation she never dreamed of.

Like Mary’s, our vocation in life is, in fact, an invitation. God does not tell us what to do with our life. God invites us to consider various vocational choices through our life’s experiences, our interests, our gifts and talents – and sometimes through direct invitation. And through this brief message, I am directly inviting YOU to consider the vocation of a Brother of the Sacred Heart.
