From the Archbishop’s Desk The first account of creation at the beginning of the Book of Genesis tells us that God rested on the seventh day of creation and enjoyed all that He had done. This is an important reminder for us about rest and enjoying what we have. God’s rest led to the Jewish understanding of the Sabbath rest. When I lived in North London, my Jewish neighbours observed this faithfully. On one occasion, I was asked to turn down their slow cooker, which would otherwise have incinerated the Sabbath meal. Another time, after a key football match, a group of teenagers asked me if England had won. They couldn’t watch the catchup until dusk. The Book of Genesis and the Third Commandment remind us that everything is a gift from God and that we are called to praise and thank God for His gifts. We know from David Attenborough’s wonderful nature programmes that everything is interconnected and that all our actions touch the created world for either better or worse.

As Christians, Jesus teaches us that love goes beyond the mere observance of the law. At the same time, Jesus does not abolish the Commandments. After Jesus’ resurrection, the Church began to celebrate Sunday as the day of resurrection, a day of celebrating our faith together as a community, a day of rest, and an opportunity for families to enjoy time together.

Of course, there are those whose work makes it difficult to rest on Sunday. St John Paul II wrote of the importance of Sunday, “Sunday is a day which is at the very heart of the Christian life… today, I would strongly urge everyone to rediscover Sunday: Do not be afraid to give your time to Christ! Yes, let us open our time to Christ, that He may cast light upon it and give it direction. He is the One who knows the secret of time and the secret of eternity, and He gives us ‘His day’ as an ever-new gift of His love.”

(Dies Domini 1998, n. 7). For the Christian, Sunday is the ‘Day of Days’ because we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead and our new life in Him. It is not just part of the weekend. It is the Day of The Lord.

For many people, the days of August, when schools are closed, have a different rhythm. They provide a time of rest for many, and although economic circumstances mean that not everybody can enjoy a holiday away, even a ‘staycation’ can be a time of rest and an opportunity to think about priorities and how to use time well. We can each ask what is truly refreshing and life-giving as we prepare for the days ahead when schools will reopen.

May God bless you all and keep you safe this month, especially if you are travelling.

Monsignor John Furnival Celebrating 50 years of priesthood

By Lizzie Williams On 10 July 1976, John Furnival was ordained to the priesthood in his home parish of Holy Family, Southport. Fifty years later to the day, Monsignor John celebrated his Golden Jubilee with a Mass of Thanksgiving at SS Peter and Paul Church, Crosby – a moment to look back and reflect on the last 50 years.

Beginning with the origins of his vocation, Mgr John recalls that “it was around the age of seven or eight that I first considered becoming a priest” and cites the encouragement given by “my primary-school headteacher and our parish priest, Father Falkner. He was very supportive of my decision to enter the seminary.”

Mgr John attended seminary at Upholland before being ordained at Holy Family, surrounded by family and friends. “It was very unusual to be ordained in your home parish, but Archbishop Derek Worlock agreed to it. It was during the long, hot summer of 1976, and it happened to be the same day as The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, so there was a lot of traffic. Archbishop Worlock was ten minutes late, but we couldn’t start without him!”

Worlock invited him to join his staff. “It was a 24/7 role as I lived in Archbishop’s House,” he explains. “I supported the Archbishop in his daily work and accompanied him on visits throughout the archdiocese. It included a lot of driving! It wasn’t the role I expected after seminary, but it gave me invaluable experience.” It also gave him “the privilege of working with the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, Bishop David Sheppard, and the Methodist Superintendent, Dr John Newton” in their pioneering ecumenical work alongside Archbishop Worlock.

Mgr John remained Archbishop’s secretary for almost 20 years, serving Archbishop Patrick Kelly for a short period too. A particular highlight was Pope John Paul II’s 1982 visit to Liverpool. “The Pope stayed at our house for one night,” he relates. “That was very unusual as normally he’d stay at the Apostolic Nuncio’s residence in London. Archbishop Worlock was a friend of the Pope’s and persuaded him to stay in Liverpool.

“He had dinner and breakfast with us.

Before the visit, we asked his secretary what the Pope would like to eat. He told us that wherever he travelled, the Holy Father usually enjoyed local food. So we served him a traditional roast lamb dinner with all the trimmings and a full English breakfast the next morning.

“When breakfast was served, the caterers brought out a plate of food for the four of us. Pope John Paul II thought it was all for him and we had to explain that it was for everyone! He certainly had a healthy appetite, although he was maintaining a gruelling schedule.”

He remembers above all when the Pope “went upstairs, waved to the crowds and gave them his blessing. His presence changed the atmosphere of the house forever.”

Mgr John then took a sabbatical, embarking on an adventure as chaplain on a world cruise aboard the QE2. “It gave me a much broader understanding of human nature and the wider world,” he observes. He was subsequently appointed parish priest of SS Peter and Paul, Crosby, where he has served

for almost 30 years. “One of the great advantages of staying in the same place for so long is that you put down roots,” he says. “You become part of the community and have the opportunity to make a real difference. I love being part of this parish and at the moment we’re engaged in the pastoral development process, looking ahead and planning for the future.”

As he approaches his 75th birthday, a priest’s traditional retirement age, Mgr John remains open to whatever his own future brings. “Whatever happens, I hope I can continue to serve the archdiocese in other ways,” he says, still grateful for his ability to “bring a spiritual dimension” to lives at a time “when many people are weighed down by material concerns and the pressures of everyday life”.

Mgr John ends by voicing his gratitude to all who have accompanied him along the way. “A priest is nothing without his people.

I’ve been blessed with wonderful support throughout my life – from my family, and from the parish community that’s become my family. That support network is essential. I’d never have been able to fulfil my vocation without it and I’m very grateful for all the people who’ve shared this journey with me.”

On a liturgical note On Monday 10 August, the Liturgy keeps the feast of an early Roman martyr named Lawrence.

Lawrence was a deacon in the church of Rome. Fearing that the Christian Church was becoming too popular and a threat to his position, in 258 AD the Roman Emperor Valerian issued an edict: all bishops, priests and deacons must be put to death. Saint Lawrence, other deacons, and Pope Sixtus II were apprehended.

The Pope was killed on 6 August. At first, the emperor offered to spare Lawrence’s life in exchange for his handing over “the treasures of the Church”.

Continuing the regular charitable and caring work which was part of his ministry, Lawrence speedily distributed any gold or silver in the church reserves to the poor of the city, and three days later, he is said to have presented the emperor with some of the sick, needy and marginalised.

These, he said, were the true treasures of the Church. This infuriated the emperor, who decreed that Lawrence should also be killed. Four days later, on 10 August, Lawrence was publicly put to death, burned alive on a gridiron.

As a deacon, Lawrence was entrusted with the ministry of service and care of others.

given a particular title or role, the rest of us think that we can safely leave that reponsibility to them!

If we have a deacon, then we don’t need to worry about looking after others: that’s his job.

The task and privilege of looking to the good of others – extending to each person the gentle and caring love of Christ – is for each one of us and is rooted in the mission given to us through the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation.

The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, Holy Communion, is food for the journey, strengthening us for this task.

One Latin word which we sometimes use to describe this is ‘caritas’ – love for others and seeking their good. If we think of this using our English word ‘charity’, then it is not merely the giving of money and material resources, but the giving of our time and abilities and care for others.

At the conclusion of our Mass, we are sent out to share with others the caritas of Christ himself: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.”

If you are fortunate enough to have a deacon serving in your parish, remember to pray for him on 10 August.

I recently took part in a retreat for Liverpool priests in Padua, a beautiful medieval city.

Prior to my retirement, I had been parish priest at the Onchan church of Saint Anthony of Padua in the Isle of Man. I’d prayed to St Anthony when I lost things – usually my car keys, an increasing problem with advancing age.

This visit to Padua filled me in on the real St Anthony. He wasn’t Italian. Rather, he was born in Lisbon and his name was Fernando. And he was originally an Augustinian. Inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscans in Morocco, he became a Franciscan, taking the name Anthony.

He set out for Morocco, but illness on the journey forced his return. Bad weather caused his ship to be diverted to Sicily. He ended up in northern Italy where, standing in as a last-minute substitute preacher at an ordination ceremony, he surprised the congregation with his eloquence and profound knowledge of scripture.

Francis of Assisi had a suspicion of theologians, but in Anthony he found a user-friendly academic theologian able to connect with the realities of everyday living. Francis gave Anthony responsibility for the theological formation of the friars.

Although he held academic posts in several universities, he was recognised above all for his popular preaching.

Appointed Franciscan superior in northern Italy, he was based in Padua. His

reputation reached as far as Rome and led to an invitation from Pope Gregory IX to preach at the papal court.

I had dismissed images of St Anthony of Padua with the child Jesus in his arms as sentimental devotion. Yet there’s a moving story behind them. A fellow friar was passing Anthony’s cell and observed a light shining under the door. On entering the cell, he found Anthony with an open copy of the scriptures on his lap. The child Jesus was sitting on the open pages.

Such was Anthony’s devotion that his reading of the Word of God caused the person of Jesus to emerge from the pages of his Bible.

There are many statues and pictures of St Anthony in the churches of Padua. There’s a significant difference between them and the image of St Anthony with which I was familiar. In Padua, the child Jesus is not merely held in Anthony’s arms but is sitting on the pages of his open Bible. This is more than pious sentimentality. We’re accustomed to the practice of ‘lectio divina’, but for Anthony, the living Word of God took visible form.

And why do we pray to St Anthony when we lose things? One day, a brother friar ‘borrowed’ Anthony’s Bible without his consent. Anthony prayed, and the book was returned.

Build the Kingdom I met Tony the other day. He was a Mancunian covered in tattoos and, as we spoke, it was quite obvious that he was a strong, brave man in whose life God was profoundly at work.

His dad hardly ever worked, so in his childhood, the family had nothing. He escaped as soon as he could and joined the army. He lived the life of many soldiers: wine, women and song.

Then his life fell apart. Accused of arson, he went to prison for 10 years. Life was hard, but he survived, and while in prison, God found him through the chaplaincy. He eventually married and has been happy for more than 30 years. I was amazed at this man’s honesty and integrity and what I saw in his story was a living testimony to the miraculous nature and work of God. His encounter with God has called him to a life of service.

Chapter 13 of Matthew’s Gospel contains seven different parables about the Church as the means by which the Kingdom can grow. We are called to build the Kingdom, but unless we nurture our relationship with God, we won’t grow into the faithful followers of Jesus that we’re called to be. When we feed our faith through God’s Word and prayer, our hearts and lives overflow with the abundance of God’s grace and the Kingdom grows almost imperceptibly.

Membership of the Church doesn’t automatically make us part of the Kingdom.

What makes us part of the Kingdom is to turn away from self and turn towards God. It’s that metanoia, that changing of direction within, that makes us Kingdom-centred. We have to choose every day to belong to the Kingdom, to turn away from self and look towards God. The reality is that every day we fail, and so every day we need to “repent”, turn towards the Kingdom and away from self.

Richard Rohr says that in one breath we need to say, ‘Thy Kingdom come’ and in the next ‘my Kingdom go’. So that’s the challenge we’re given, to pray for the coming of the Kingdom among us.

How much time do you spend listening for the voice of God each day, just time to be still and listen? Maybe we’re afraid of what we might hear.

We might hear that we must take risks in order to build community. That we must take the risk to welcome people, to be compassionate and understanding towards the divorced and remarried, to people living with HIV or AIDS, to those with mental health issues, those struggling with addiction, to the LGBT+ community – to everyone.

We might hear that we must take the risk to care for one another and, through that caring, show the world the power of love.

Tony’s life reminds us that the Kingdom grows not through perfection, but through lives transformed by listening to God. We are Church in order to reveal the Kingdom – a Kingdom that is a lived reality and whose ultimate measure is how willing we are to love one another.

Other pilgrimages, part 2: Knock, “The Irish Lourdes”

It was raining. It was Ireland, it’s always raining. But one of the witnesses noticed that the grass at the foot of the apparition was dry.

There were 15 witnesses to the apparition at Knock, aged from five to 75, and whilst they agreed on the generalities, they all seemed to spot a detail that none of the others had observed. They noticed a bright white light surrounding three figures and recognised two of them as being Our Lady and St Joseph. One villager, Mary Beirne, recognised the third figure as St John the Evangelist, in bishop’s robes just like the statue she knew from another church. One boy, crawling closer to St John, saw writing in the book he carried. Off to one side was an altar, and on it was a lamb and a cross.

The apparition took place in broad daylight, over two hours on the evening of 21 August 1879 in a village in County Mayo, in the west of Ireland. But it must have been one of the most unconcerned audiences for a miraculous event ever. The first person to see the figures, the priest’s housekeeper, thought that what she saw was statues they’d been expecting to replace some damaged in a storm, and walked past on her way to a neighbour’s house. The teenagers didn’t hang around long. The parish priest of St John the Baptist had had a hard day and was too tired to come and take a look. Folk came and went, drawn away by the news that an old lady was dying in her house in the village. She didn’t, and by the time the people returned, the apparition had gone. If they’d had Minecraft and TikTok, probably no-one would have noticed at all.

Though nothing was said to the villagers by the figures, and no tidings were imparted, news of the apparitions on the south gable wall of the parish church spread quickly, and a Commission of Enquiry was appointed to interview the witnesses: it reported to the Archbishop of Tuam that their testimony was “trustworthy and satisfactory”. Reports of the apparitions spread and made front-page news in Ireland and England. A number of remarkable cures from various infirmities were soon said to have occurred and Knock gradually became recognised as an important Shrine for devotion to Our Lady. Group pilgrimages to Knock were organised as early as 1880, including some 1,000 Irish emigrants from Manchester in August that year.

Many of Liverpool’s Catholics had connections with Ireland, and Fr Patrick Murphy at St Anthony’s, Scotland Road, recorded newspaper accounts in his scrapbook. Fr Murphy was one of many Irish priests 8

ministering in our parishes, so it is surprising that it seems to have taken until 1939 before one of them, Fr O’Rourke, led the first pilgrimage from our archdiocese. Fr William O’Rourke was born in Leitrim, less than 40 miles from Knock, so must have grown up with tales of the apparitions nearby. In 1939, he was an assistant priest at Our Lady’s in Eldon Street, and it is thought that as Spiritual Director he led a group of pilgrims mostly from that parish.

By 1953, it was reported that the Shrine was “attracting organised pilgrimages from distant countries as well as from many parts of Ireland”, and the following year for the first time over a million pilgrims visited. The new church of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland was completed in 1976, and when St John Paul II visited as Pope for the centenary year in 1979, he elevated it to the status of a Basilica. A mosaic crafted from over a million and a half pieces of glass was unveiled as part of the refurbishment of the Basilica in 2016.

The building of an international airport at Knock is the stuff of legend (and a musical play) and is largely attributed to the drive and vision of one man, Mgr James Horan. As Parish Priest since 1967, he had already overseen the building of the new church and the Papal visit.

He overcame resistance to the very idea of an airport on a peat bog, obtained government funding, and then campaigned widely for private donations when the money ran out.

Construction began in 1981 and the airport opened in 1985. Pope Francis flew into Knock Airport (Ireland West) when he visited the Shrine in August 2018.

In August 1986, the Catholic Pictorial published an appeal by Mgr Horan for funds to expand the new airport’s facilities, following its official opening on 30 May. In a cruel irony, the very same edition also reported his death on 1 August, on a pilgrimage to Lourdes.

“One of the few places where the clergy can meet”, he said. Even priests have a day off.

St Anthony of Padua Parish marks 100 years of faith and community St Anthony of Padua Parish celebrated its centenary on Sunday 14 June with a special Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by Archbishop John Sherrington.

The parish welcomed members of the Greyfriars, alongside parishioners, visitors and friends, as they gave thanks for 100 years of prayer, service and community. The church was filled for the celebration, which reflected the strong Franciscan spirit and sense of belonging that has shaped the parish over the past century.

The celebrations were organised by the Centenary Committee, whose dedication over many months helped make the day a fitting tribute to the parish’s history. Special centenary mugs were also produced as keepsakes for parishioners and visitors.

The Mass marked the beginning of a year of celebrations at St Anthony of Padua, with further events planned over the coming months as the parish looks back with gratitude on its first 100 years and looks ahead with hope to the future.

A number of special gifts and presentations marked the occasion.

Children from the parish’s Little Church presented a handmade wooden cross, while pupils from St Anthony of Padua Catholic Primary School created a colourful display of bunting made up of 100 prayers, representing each year of the parish’s history.

At the end of Mass, the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron presented the Conventual Franciscan priests with a beautiful green chasuble, recognising their long-standing relationship with the friars. Archbishop John also presented parish priest Fr Gerard Mary Toman with a Papal Blessing from Pope Leo in recognition of the centenary celebrations.

The generosity of the parish community was also evident, with funds raised during the celebrations helping to support a sick child’s pilgrimage to Lourdes.

Following Mass, parishioners gathered in the hall and grounds for an afternoon of food, music and entertainment. Live music spanning several decades, children’s activities, bouncy castles, beat-the-goalie and donkey rides helped bring the whole community together.

Archdiocese of Liverpool group to visit CAFOD projects in Kenya The Archdiocese of Liverpool and CAFOD have joined forces for a special fact-finding and faith-sharing visit to Kenya, giving a group of priests, educators and volunteers the opportunity to witness first-hand the impact of CAFOD’s international development work and strengthen links with communities overseas.

Funded by the Liverpool Archdiocesan Missionary Project (LAMP), the visit will enable participants to learn from local communities and Church partners in Kenya, bringing back valuable insights to support their own missionary outreach and faith formation across the archdiocese.

Travelling on the visit will be Fr Anthony Kelly, parish priest of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and St Swithin, Croxteth; Fr Martin Fyles, who is soon to begin his appointment as assistant priest at St Gregory’s and St Oswald’s, Chorley after completing his studies in Rome; seminarian Joseph Campbell; Susan Noblet, Headteacher of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Euxton; Philip Melia, teacher at Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School; Kathryn Edmond, CAFOD Parish Volunteer and Chaplain at Carmel College; and Colette Byrne, Community Participation Coordinator at CAFOD. The group will depart in August, meeting CAFOD’s Kenya team before travelling to Marsabit, where they will spend several days visiting CAFOD-supported projects and meeting local communities. They will then travel to Isiolo to learn more about the challenges facing communities and the work of CAFOD and its partners.

The visit forms part of the archdiocese’s ongoing commitment to mission, global solidarity and Catholic social teaching, helping participants deepen their understanding of the universal Church and the realities faced by communities worldwide.

Fr Anthony Kelly said: “I have always had a soft spot for Africa, perhaps stemming from seeing the terrible footage of the Ethiopian famine in 1984 reported by Michael Buerk.

The charity single “Do they know it’s Christmas?”, which raised money and awareness for this, was the first record I ever bought.

“Although I have visited the continent once before, on a holiday to Egypt, I felt drawn by the invitation to go on the trip.

I see it as a great opportunity to get a snapshot of the lives of the people we meet; how they share and bear witness to their faith, what their education resources are like, and how society in Kenya compares to Western culture. I do believe that encountering different cultures broadens the perspective and, as our parish is a diverse community, we are blessed to experience this enrichment here at home.”

Sue Noblet, headteacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Euxton, added: “I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to have been invited by CAFOD and the Archdiocese of Liverpool to visit Kenya and see first-hand the impact of our school’s fundraising. It is an amazing opportunity to witness CAFOD’s work and meet the communities whose lives have been supported through these projects.

“I am particularly looking forward to learning more about the communities and gaining a deeper understanding of both the challenges they face and the hope, resilience and opportunities that CAFOD helps to foster. I hope to bring these experiences back to our school, sharing real stories and insights with our children so they can better understand how their fundraising, prayers and support make a genuine difference to the lives of others around the world.”

Fr Grant Maddock celebrates 30 years of priestly ministry Parishioners, family, friends and fellow clergy gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ordination of Fr Grant Maddock, giving thanks for three decades of faithful priestly ministry in the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Ordained to the priesthood in July 1996, Fr Grant began his ministry at St Margaret Mary’s before serving at Christ the King. He is now parish priest of Our Lady’s, Lydiate, where he also serves as Dean of the Sefton Inland Deanery.

Alongside his parish ministry, Fr Grant is well known across the archdiocese as Pilgrimage Director for the Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. In 2025, he received the rare honour of being named a Chaplain to the Shrine at Lourdes during the Mass marking the official recognition of the miraculous healing of Liverpool pilgrim Jack Traynor.

Reflecting on the anniversary celebrations, Fr Grant thanked everyone who had joined him for the occasion.

“I have no words to express the immense beauty and privilege of the celebrations for my Pearl Anniversary,” he said. “So many people gathered to praise the Lord, to give thanks for Ss Peter and Paul, and for my frail service of the Lord and His Church.”

He also expressed his gratitude to all those who had supported the celebrations through their prayers, cards, gifts and hospitality.

“Thank you to everyone who made the day so special— through your love, your prayers, your kind words, cards and gifts, and to all those who baked, in the horrendous heat of this past week, the most fabulous cakes! There are so many to thank, and today, as I spend some time in prayer, I will be holding each one of you before the Lord.”

Archbishop’s Statement on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Archbishop John Sherrington, in his role as Lead Bishop for Life Issues for the Bishops’ Conference (CBCEW), has issued a statement highlighting the dangers of the Private Members’ Bill that seeks to legalise assisted suicide:

“The Second Reading of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is expected to take place in the House of Commons on 11 September. Assisted suicide is a matter of life and death, and it is wholly unsatisfactory that this divisive and flawed bill is being put to parliament again as a Private Members’ Bill without the key issues being addressed. The reduced majority at Third Reading in the Commons and the debate in the Lords showed how flawed the Bill is.

“This matter is urgent. I urge people to contact their Member of Parliament and ask them to vote against this deeply flawed bill at Second Reading. You can do so by using the simple contact form on the Right to Life UK website, the Bishops’ Conference website, or by writing to your MP.

“There are many reasons why this bill should be opposed.

This bill is wrong in principle. By allowing medical practitioners to help patients end their lives, it will fundamentally alter the founding principles of the National Health Service and undermine the trust which is central to the relationship between patient and clinician.

“As many medical professionals and others have pointed out, the legislation is likely to lead to pressure on the most

vulnerable to end their lives through assisted suicide. The safeguards against coercion, pressure and abuse are wholly inadequate.

“Moreover, the bill fails to provide sufficient protection for freedom of conscience for doctors. In addition, health and social care staff could find themselves under pressure to participate in assisted suicide. These concerns are shared by the principal professional bodies whose members would be involved in its implementation, including the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

“Rather than improving care for those approaching the end of life, this legislation risks weakening already overstretched palliative care services. Hospices and care homes may be required to facilitate assisted suicide on their premises. This could force some of them to close.

“We need good hospice care and accompaniment at the end of life as we prepare for eternal life. Christ calls us to protect and accompany people to a natural death, caring and alleviating their suffering along the way. This bill is not the merciful solution supporters claim it to be.

“Our Lady, Help of the Sick, pray for us.”

Humanitas: Catholic Social Action Conference explores human flourishing in a changing world Parish volunteers, clergy, representatives from Catholic charities and community leaders from across the Archdiocese of Liverpool gathered at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Friday 10 July for the fourth annual Catholic Social Action Conference, Humanitas: Flourishing in Action.

The day reflected on how Catholic Social Teaching can inspire practical action in today’s world. This year’s conference took place against the backdrop of Pope Leo XIV’s recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which explores human dignity, the common good, and the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

Archbishop John Sherrington opened the conference, before Fr Maximilian Martin OFM Conv. reflected on our role as the “living stones” of the Church. The keynote address was given

by Jenny Sinclair, founder of Together for the Common Good (T4CG), who invited participants to consider what authentic human flourishing looks like in contemporary society.

A number of member organisations from Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN) helped shape the day. Young leaders from Million Minutes led an interactive workshop, In Our Own Words, sharing how their faith inspires them to work for peace and justice, while members of the Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ) Merseyside explored practical ways of promoting racial justice through everyday acts of kindness, led by Deacon Justin Malewezi. Representatives from Nugent and the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) were also among the organisations attending, alongside many other charities and community groups.

John Paul de Quay, co-founder of The Ecological Conversion Group Charity and The Journey to 2030 project, held a workshop exploring care for creation through Laudato Si’, and how the new encyclical builds upon it rather than replacing it.

A particular highlight of the afternoon was the panel discussion, ‘Leading with Humanity: AI and the Change of Era’, chaired by Cllr Jane Corbett. Reflecting Pope Leo XIV’s recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the session explored how the Church can respond faithfully to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence while keeping human dignity at its heart.

Revd Phil Jump, Chair of Churches Together in the Merseyside Region, contributed a pre-recorded reflection and led participants in prayer, while Tiffany St James, Liverpool City Region’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer – the first public sector regional CAIO in the UK – and Professor Iain Buchan from the University of Liverpool offered thought-provoking presentations on the opportunities and challenges AI presents for society.

During the lunch break, delegates visited charity stalls, exhibitions and displays highlighting social action initiatives from across the region, including Together Liverpool’s Manifesto for Hope display, an “Ask a Deacon” stall, and Dian Kostov’s “Mother’s Warmth” exhibition currently on display in the Unity Chapel.

The conference concluded with a shared time of discernment, encouraging participants to return to their parishes, charities and communities renewed in their commitment to helping every person flourish.

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.” (Luke 10: 25-37)

Father Anton Fernandopulle A life less ordinary By Lizzie Williams On 8 July 2001, Anton Fernandopulle was ordained a priest in Jamaica. Twenty-five years later, Fr Anton celebrated his silver jubilee with his parish in Huyton – the cue to look back with the Pic on the long road travelled since his boyhood in Sri Lanka.

As Fr Anton explains: “I was born into a Catholic family. It’s a Buddhist country, so we were a minority. My parents were practising but not strict – we prayed the rosary at home, and I often fell asleep during it! As the fifth of six children, I usually got away with it.” His vocation began at a Catholic school run by the Marist brothers, with his family connections proving a factor too. “My aunt was a former nun and there are several priests and religious among my parents’ relatives. On family holidays or pilgrimages, we often invited priests along, so faith was always a part of our lives.”

At 16, he entered a seminary and took inspiration there from a visiting Oblate (OMI) priest from Bangladesh and his tales of missionary ministry. “He was full of energy, zeal and a spirit of adventure - he reminded me of Tarzan! His witness encouraged me to persevere in my vocation, remain in the seminary and eventually join the Oblates, where I spent several enriching years in formation.”

Fr Anton left the Oblates after completing his studies in Philosophy and began working as a hotel receptionist in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital. “Working both day and night shifts helped me develop resilience and a strong work ethic,” he recalls. “I still remember my manager’s constant reminder that ‘the customer is always right’ – a principle that taught me the importance of listening, patience and service.”

After time in Switzerland, he moved to Kingston, Jamaica, and joined the Jamaican diocesan seminary affiliated with the University of the West Indies to continue his theological studies.

After a year, the seminary closed, and he and the other Jamaican seminarians were sent to St John Vianney Regional Seminary in Trinidad and Tobago. Having completed his studies in Trinidad, he returned to Jamaica and began parish work, including at an innercity parish in Kingston, near the childhood home of Bob Marley in Trench Town. “It was a tough area with high levels of violence, but parish life was vibrant. Mass could last two hours and, in typical laid-back Jamaican style, never started on time!”

In preparation for his diaconate ordination, he moved to rural Jamaica and lived with a young Jesuit priest, Fr Martin Royackers SJ, who had a deep commitment to the poor. “He was passionate about empowering lay leadership and helping rural farmers secure better prices for their crops by transporting them to Kingston through the Jesuit-run co-operative. He was a straight talker and was not afraid to challenge anyone, including the clergy. I learnt so much from him and he played a vital part in my journey to the priesthood. I’m not wrong in saying he laid the foundation for my priestly ministry.”

But just 18 days before his ordination, tragedy struck. “I left Martin at church one evening and went home to cook for us both. We usually walked back together, but not that day. I heard a gunshot, but that wasn’t unusual in the area. When I went to bed, he hadn’t returned home so I left his meal on the table. The next morning, his food was untouched. I went to the church and found that he’d been shot dead at the door.” Despite this, his ordination went ahead on 8 July 2001 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston.

Afterwards, for his own safety, he was moved from that parish and served at four rural churches across a large area of Jamaica, where he enjoyed bringing the parishes together. He remains grateful for the generosity of the Food For The Poor organisation, which enabled him to assist many struggling families. However, the trauma of witnessing the aftermath of Fr Martin’s murder took a significant toll. Exactly one year later, Fr Anton suffered a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), often referred to as a minor stroke. Following this, he travelled to the United States, where he met what he describes as his “guardian angels”. While taking part in a transformational personal development programme in Florida, he met the Guido family – Nancy, Ron and their son Rob. “They helped me find therapists, counsellors, and medical support.

Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.”

The team caring for Fr Anton urged his bishop to move him from Jamaica and his mother strongly encouraged him to move to the UK, as he already had siblings living there who could provide support. He applied to several dioceses in England and was invited to Liverpool by Bishop Vincent Malone. “I booked a oneway ticket – and the rest is history.”

Since arriving in the Archdiocese of Liverpool, Fr Anton has served in Crosby, St Anthony’s, Scotland Road, and St John’s, Kirkdale, before becoming parish priest of St Agnes and St Aidan, Huyton, where he has now served for over 20 years.

Speaking about his parish, Fr Anton said: “It’s very synodal and allembracing in its approach to ministry. It’s bold, creative, and firmly committed to teamwork. I’m blessed with a dynamic parish team that includes our very talented pastoral assistant, Christine Ball.

We have more than 80 volunteers who help make this parish such a special place.

“I’m passionate about fostering lay leadership and it’s a privilege to support and encourage people as they share their gifts in service of the Church. In this parish, there are many opportunities for parishioners to become involved and make a real difference.”

His passion for mission has also had a profound impact on parish life. “Many years ago, on World Mission Sunday, I invited parishioners to consider overseas mission work. That led to the birth of our parish mission [WCMAD – We Can Make A Difference] to Suriname in South America.

“We travelled into the Amazon rainforest to support several remote communities served by a dedicated Dutch priest. Those mission trips transformed the people who took part. They opened their eyes to the wider world, deepened their faith and, on their return, many became the backbone of parish life.”

The parish later established a mission to Romania, where volunteers continue to travel each summer. Today, this parish is widely recognised for its commitment to inclusivity, outreach and social justice. The parish is home to SHARe Knowsley, a charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers, many members of CARJ, and the archdiocese’s only support group for LGBT+ Catholics.

To mark his Silver Jubilee of priesthood, the parish celebrated with a special Mass followed by a parish celebration attended

by Fr Adrian McNamara, a priest from the Archdiocese of Birmingham, who had been present at his ordination in Jamaica.

The Guido family and many others from different parts of the world joined the Mass virtually, meanwhile, ensuring “especially meaningful and memorable occasion” for Fr Anton.

Hello from home – not Rome!

This month’s Pastoral Ponderings are from home. I’ve been at home for a short time now and I’ve had the chance to see family and friends, along with familiar places, which is wonderful.

When I am back in the archdiocese, people do ask me whether I prefer to be back in Italy because of the different opportunities that I might have there as part of my formation.

However, after being in my home parish church and in a couple of other churches I like to visit, I have realised that our own archdiocese has churches of great beauty – as well as the ones in Italy.

Sitting in church recently on a sunny day during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, I noticed how the sunlight illuminated the stained glass vividly. Images of Jesus, Our Lady, and different saints were so colourful despite well over a hundred years of sunshine upon them.

Whether we visit a church built in the 19th century or from more recent times, the imagery that furnishes it is not simply decorative. This year at seminary, I learned about how images or icons gradually became part of Christian places of worship.

By the sixth century, mosaics and icons were valued as great pieces of Christian art. During the seventh and eighth centuries though, a dispute developed within the Eastern, or Byzantine, Church, which rejected icons due to theological reasons. One reason was a belief that the art, whether it be a mosaic, in wood or stone, was being venerated rather than God the Father, Christ, or Our Lady.

In defence of images, St John of Damascus in the eighth century wrote in great depth with the idea that the material used to create the image brings us closer to God. The images in a church remind us that the mystery of God’s presence and Word became flesh through the birth of his Son.

St John wrote: “In former times, God, who is without body or form, could not be depicted at all. But now, since God has appeared in the flesh and lived among human beings, I can now depict what is visible of God.”

I often feel that spending time looking at a piece of church art helps me pray – especially when what I want to tell God might seem hard to put into words. It might help you too.

I’m pretty sure Pope Leo wasn’t referring to pouring tea when he said we are called to serve the People of God, but tea (and coffee for those java-junkies among us) is a good place to start when trying to build connections and care for others.

After having taught in a Sisters of Mercy school for 17 years, I am very familiar with the wonderful legacy of the Venerable Catherine McAuley, the founder of the order. On her deathbed Catherine instructed the sisters ‘to get a good cup of tea... when I am gone, to comfort one another.’

She knew that her community would be devastated and that this was one way to help them to look after each other in the immediate aftermath of their loss.

Mercy communities around the world to this day have ‘Good Cup of Tea’ gatherings to help form relationships, express care for others, and raise money for those in need.

The humble cuppa is a powerful symbol of hospitality, a simple act of kindness which can bring comfort and tend to people’s needs. But there’s more to it than that.

Louise Coates, a psychologist, says it’s a good brain hack. It’s one of the reasons we make a brew when we’ve had a shock. Making a cup of tea is an action which brings some normality. It gives us something to do, grounding us in the moment. It helps us to stop and take a breath as we boil and brew, giving us a sense of control. We switch our brain out of survival mode that shock can often bring, and into thinking and doing mode - how much water do I need? Is the kettle plugged in? Cups or mugs? Milk and sugar? It means we can just be with someone without the pressure of having to talk.

But it doesn’t take a psychologist to tell us that tea is brilliant in lots of other

ways. It gives us a ‘pause’ from the busyness of life, a breather when we can collect our thoughts. Holding a warm mug gives us a physical sensation of comfort. Tea is rich in antioxidants which can support heart and immune health. Studies say there are also chemicals in tea which promote a state of calm alertness by increasing serotonin and dopamine. Black tea can reduce the stress hormone cortisol.

And making a cup of tea for someone is a simple act of love.

The early Christians shared food as part of their celebration of the Holy Eucharist, a full meal called the Agape (Love) Feast. They recognised that food and spending time together were essential parts of belonging together as a group, not just the celebration of the sacrament itself.

How can we bond with others easily in our parishes if we don’t spend social time together? Just going to Mass and then going home doesn’t necessarily build community. The parishes that appear to thrive are the ones sharing tea, coffee (and biscuits!) and chatter after the final blessing.

So maybe serving tea is the best way for some of us to serve others – calming, nourishing, giving us something to focus on when people might feel anxious or shy, giving us time to feel comfortable until we get to know each other, a space to build connection and belonging. Young people like tea and coffee too! Don’t be afraid to invite them in to brew, serve, wash cups. It might be a gateway to greater community and greater service.

Deanery Diary

Wigan and Leigh Deanery

The Wigan and Leigh Deanery is organised into four Families of Parishes: Family 1 in Wigan; Family 2 in Ashton and Platt Bridge; Family 3 in Golborne, Lowton, Croft and Leigh; and Family 4 in Hindley, Hindley Green, Atherton and Boothstown.

Currently, we have 11 priests serving 14 parishes (20 churches) and expect that figure to drop to five or six priests within five years’ time. In view of the urgency of the situation, we have embarked on our Parish Development Strategy. Each parish has carried out a review of data relating to the parish and its local community and has prepared a parish audit. Each parish has also prepared a Parish Development Tool in which we considered how our parishes relate to each of the six areas in the Pastoral Plan. Encouragingly, each parish has identified ‘green shoots’ - signs of hope within parish life. Being practical, we have also identified areas where we can improve and actions we can take to make a difference.

Currently, we have some joint spiritual, secular, and social activities across our Families and Deanery. Indeed, one of the positive comments about the process is that we have had opportunities to meet new people and have made new and lasting friendships. As we embark on the next stage of our Pastoral Development Strategy, we are invited to be ‘bold and creative’ as we look to the future for our deanery with hope.

Saint of the Month

St Edmund Arrowsmith Born in Haydock in 1585, St Edmund Arrowsmith was martyred for his priesthood in 1628. Ordained in 1612, he was renowned for his fearless ministry in Lancashire. Our next Families of Parishes pilgrimage walk takes us to South Liverpool, exploring part of the Riverside family.

Starting at St Francis of Assisi Church in Garston, the route takes you through Aigburth and towards Sefton Park and St Anthony of Padua, home of the Franciscan community in the archdiocese, who are celebrating a jubilee this year – 800 years since the death of St Francis of Assisi.

Total Time: 1hr 52 minutes Total Distance: 5.1 miles

Start: St Francis of Assisi Church, Garston We start our first journey in Garston, and at St Francis of Assisi Church, part of the parish of St Wilfrid. The mission of this church dates as far back as 1883, with the church standing in its current location since 1904. These days, the church is under the pastoral care of Fr David Potter. If you are walking on a Sunday, you may wish to begin by attending Mass at either 9.30am or 11.30am before setting off. Take a moment to pray for your intentions as you begin your pilgrimage.

Stop 1: St Charles, Aigburth The first stop on this walk is along Aigburth Road and to St Charles’ Church. Fun fact: the mission was established in 1892, the same year another local institution was established - Liverpool Football Club. The church has stood on its current site since 1900, and is currently under the pastoral care of Fr Ron Johnson, who is also our Vocations Director. When you get there, take an opportunity to pray for Fr Ron, and those who are discerning their vocation, whatever form that may take.

Time: 55 minutes Distance: 2.4 miles Stop 2: St Clare, Sefton Park Next, it is through the beautiful surroundings of Sefton Park and over to St Clare’s Church – which is very close to the St Margaret Clitherow Centre, archdiocesan offices. Like the other churches on this walk, its history predates the 20th century.

The mission was established in 1890, and the church has stood on this site ever since. These days, it is under the pastoral care of Canon Aidan Prescott, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia. Whilst there, just take in a moment to pray for Canon Aidan, and those who have gone before him in the parish.

Time: 31 minutes Distance: 1.4 miles Final Stop: St Anthony of Padua, Mossley Hill The final stop takes us to St Anthony of Padua, who recently celebrated their centenary with a parish fun day. As well as being a church with an active community, in the spirit of St Anthony himself, this church is also a wonderful place to sit alone with God without any distractions from daily life. Whilst you are there, take in a moment to have a look at the incredible artwork around the altar there and give thanks for exploring another Families of Parishes.

All Saints Multi Academy Trust celebrates annual Service of Blessing at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral The All Saints Multi Academy Trust community recently came together at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral for its third annual Service of Blessing.

This year’s theme, ‘One in Christ, United in Mission’, celebrated the shared values and mission that unite the trust’s Catholic and Church of England schools.

The service was led by the Bishop of Warrington, the Very Reverend Simon Robinson, and the Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Reverend John Sherrington. They offered prayers, reflections, and blessings that shared the trust’s commitment to faith and education.

Sponsored by both the Diocese of Liverpool and the Archdiocese of Liverpool, All Saints Multi Academy Trust is founded on the ecumenical partnership of Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock, which began in the late 1970s and developed through the 1980s. Their belief that communities are ‘better together’ remains central to the trust’s mission today.

The service began with a procession made up of students who proudly carried framed logos of their respective academies.

The event featured uplifting hymns, scripture readings, and a poem written by a student from Hope Academy, all centred around the theme of togetherness.

The trust choir delivered moving performances, and was accompanied by talented musicians from St Michael’s Band at St Michael’s Church of England Academy.

The ceremony concluded with a blessing of school badges and the congregation, symbolising the unity and shared mission that connect all members of the trust.

Catholic Teaching Alliance celebrates another outstanding year of teacher training The Catholic Teaching Alliance (CTA) recently marked the completion of another exceptional year of teacher training with a Service of Celebration held in the beautiful chapel at Cardinal Newman College, Preston.

Almost 60 trainee teachers, together with their families, mentors and colleagues, gathered to celebrate the culmination of a year of hard work, dedication and professional growth as they prepare to begin the next stage of their teaching careers.

Guests were warmly welcomed by Nick Burnham, principal of Cardinal Newman College, who spoke passionately about the rewards and privileges of a career in teaching. He congratulated the trainees on reaching this important milestone and encouraged them to embrace the opportunities ahead as they begin making a difference in the lives of young people.

He challenged those taking up roles within Catholic schools and colleges to continue striving to make a difference through their service and witness. He also encouraged those beginning careers outside the Catholic sector to remember the CTA community and to keep Catholic education in mind as they progress through their teaching journey.

Following the service, trainees, families, mentors and staff gathered together for refreshments, providing an opportunity to celebrate achievements, share memories from the year and look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Our Lady Queen of Peace students deliver a magical production of Beauty and the Beast Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic High School, Skelmersdale, recently brought Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. to the stage.

The sold-out production took place over two nights and showcased the incredible talent and creativity of students across all year groups.

The 28-strong cast had been rehearsing since January, attending two rehearsals each week. Taking on the roles of the much-loved characters were Year 10 student Alicia Vicente as Belle, Year 7 student Ollie Sanders as the Beast, and Year 10 student Lacey Lee Lawrenson as Gaston.

An equally dedicated backstage crew of 11 students attended weekly lunchtime sessions to design, sketch and paint the impressive stage scenery, and the technology team demonstrated exceptional creativity by designing and producing a range of homemade costumes for the enchanted furniture characters.

Students were involved throughout every stage of the creative process, with many taking on additional responsibilities beyond performing. From set construction and costume creation to operating the sound during the evening performances, their teamwork ensured every aspect of the production ran smoothly.

Ollie, who played the Beast, commented: “I started at Our Lady Queen of Peace this September as a Year 7 student, and I was so excited when I got the role of the Beast in the school production. I enjoyed attending all the rehearsals and working

Prize-giving day celebrates success of 462 Liverpool students St John Bosco Arts College, Croxteth, recently honoured students’ achievements at its annual prize-giving day ceremonies.

Taking place over the course of two days, celebrations began with a Key Stage 3 graduation and awards ceremony for Year 9.

On the second prize-giving day, the school was joined by guest speaker, Kirsty Doyle.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Kirsty rose to national prominence after winning the first series of Sky One’s ‘Project Catwalk’.

Her success on the show led to a mentorship with Topshop, launching a career that has spanned more than two decades.

Today, Kirsty has built a successful global fashion brand and has also expanded her work into education, founding The KD Club, which empowers young people through creative education, careers and work experience programmes.

Kirsty joined the Year 7 and 8 awards ceremony, as well as the Key Stage 4 and 5 ceremony where she delivered an inspiring speech about entrepreneurship and the importance of building a supportive network.

Kirsty also discussed her latest venture, The Work XP, a social enterprise that connects careers to classrooms. It was founded after Kirsty noticed many young people with incredible talent were unaware of the careers that existed or how to get into them.

Concluding her speech, Kirsty said: “Success isn’t about collecting contacts, it’s about creating connections, helping other people and opening the doors for others to come with you […] Say yes to opportunities, ask for help and offer help, because the opportunities that change your life often come through conversations you never expected to have.”

Throughout the event, guests enjoyed performances from the school band, the cast of this year’s production of Mary Poppins Jr, and the award-winning choir, which concluded the celebration by leading the school community in the hymn to St John Bosco.

Education community gathers for Annual Mass of Thanksgiving Teachers, school staff and education leaders from across the Archdiocese of Liverpool gathered at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Thursday, 2 July for the annual Education Mass of Thanksgiving.

The Mass was an opportunity to give thanks for all those involved in Catholic education and to celebrate their dedication to the life and mission of the archdiocese’s schools and colleges.

The awards ceremony, which took place on Saturday, 20 June, brought together over 100 attendees to recognise the achievements of 29 students from across the UK and Ireland.

The Inspire Awards ceremony recognised achievements across multiple disciplines. Pupils excelled in the ninth International Maths Olympiad and BYITC’s Supermaths Abacus Programme. They also demonstrated leadership and creativity through the She Power Awards.

The event celebrated the importance of community, family support, and inspiring young minds to reach their full potential.

Rohini Sharma Joshi OBE, Kiran Sagar, Harminder Berman, and Charan Gill MBE judged the awards.

Suhan is an Abacus Programme graduate and attends St Nicholas Catholic Academy, part of St Joseph Catholic Multi Academy Trust (SJCMAT).

Suhan’s parents, Sridhar and Sahithi, said: “This achievement shows what can happen when determination meets the right guidance. We are grateful to BYITC for helping Suhan turn challenges into strengths.”

Dr Rashmi Mantri, founder of BYITC, said: “It was fantastic to see such a strong cohort at this year’s Inspire Awards and congrats to Suhan. Hundreds of pupils gather to celebrate 124th Good Shepherd Appeal Hundreds of children from schools across the archdiocese gathered for two Good Shepherd Masses in June, celebrating the generosity and compassion shown through this year’s Good Shepherd Appeal in support of Nugent.

The first Mass, celebrated by Archbishop John Sherrington, took place at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Thursday, 25 June.

Reflecting on the Gospel of the Good Shepherd in his homily, Archbishop Sherrington invited the children to consider the importance of water on a hot day, and how shepherds in the Holy Land would lead their sheep from one oasis to another to drink.

He explained that, just as sheep recognise and trust the voice of their shepherd, Christians are called to recognise the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who leads and nourishes his people.

The archbishop reminded those gathered that the Eucharist is like an oasis where we are fed by Christ through His word and the gift of His body and blood. He encouraged everyone to listen for the voice of Jesus and to go out and put their faith into action by loving and serving their neighbour.

The Schools Singing Programme led the music throughout the Mass. Around 900 pupils from 28 schools across the archdiocese took part, with approximately 350 members of the congregation also joining the celebration.

A second Good Shepherd Mass took place on Tuesday, 30 June at St Mary’s Church, Leyland. Around 200 children attended the celebration, which was celebrated by Fr Joe Bibby, concelebrated by Fr Michael Barrett and assisted by Deacon Paul Rooney, a trustee of Nugent. The music was provided by St Mary’s parish music group.

Across both celebrations, 49 schools from across the archdiocese took part, recognising the fundraising efforts of pupils, staff and families during Lent.

Now in its 124th year, the Good Shepherd Appeal continues to support Nugent’s vital services for children and young people across the region.

Reading changes everything National figures show that children’s enjoyment of reading is at its lowest level in almost 20 years. At the same time, young people are increasingly accessing stories, information and entertainment through audiobooks, podcasts and digital platforms.

Research also highlights that children who experience difficulties with reading are at greater risk of developing mental health challenges later in life, including anxiety, depression and behavioural difficulties.

Sporting legend inspires pupils at school prize-giving St Mary’s College Preparatory School recently descended upon the Concert Room at St George’s Hall, to highlight the achievements of its pupils over the past 12 months.

This year, the junior prize-giving ceremony welcomed local sporting legend, Gill Burns MBE, as its VIP guest.

A former England captain and Rugby World Cup winner, Gill represented her country on 73 occasions and, following her playing career, she served as president of the Rugby Football Union for Women, and was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

She has continued to champion women’s rugby and inspire young players through other leadership roles, mentoring schemes, community projects and charitable work.

Commenting on the event, headteacher, Jonathan Webster, said: “Each and every award reflects something meaningful about the recipient - their progress, perseverance, talent or contribution to school life - and the event as a whole demonstrates the value of belonging to a school community in which every child is known and valued.”

St Mary’s College principal, Mike Kennedy, commented: “This was a very special evening and I would like to pay tribute to the whole Preparatory School community for creating such a caring and loving environment in which our children can grow, learn and succeed.”

In her speech at the event, Gill encouraged pupils to aim high in whatever they do: “My advice to you is to make the most of all your opportunities - give things a try no matter how scary they may seem.

“I guarantee that if you work hard enough you will reap the rewards and - equally importantly - very much enjoy your journey.”

The event celebrated the excellent academic results achieved by pupils as well their success in a wide range of extracurricular activities including music, drama, sport and charity work.

It also included a special new award for inclusion, presented to deaf Year 6 pupil, Theo Sankson. The award will be presented annually and bear his name in the future.

As well as the prize-giving, Concert Room guests were able to enjoy a series of choral and instrumental performances.

Mums the Word What an amazing summer it has been. The weather has been glorious, although some would say that it has been too hot. It is the first time I can remember that Wimbledon wasn’t rained off.

I absolutely love tennis and was glued to the television for two weeks, which was wonderful.

After our Walsingham pilgrimage, it was time to prepare for Lourdes.

The annual Liverpool pilgrimage to Our Lady’s shrine at Lourdes has always been my favourite and I enjoy every minute of it. Apart from the hustle and bustle of meeting friends old and new, there is the quiet time spent at the grotto saying the Rosary or just talking to Our Lady. There, we lit candles for family and friends, and for all those who asked us to.

Mary is such a good listener. We had Mass every day and the music group were fantastic as usual. It was lovely meeting Archbishop John Sherrington too, and I am already looking forward to next year’s pilgrimage.

Most of our foundations have closed for the summer holidays, so I have no news to share. I expect many of you will be going on holiday somewhere warm and sunny. I hope you have a good time wherever you go, and I look forward to seeing you in September.

Bishop Tom’s summer reflection As we enter the month of August, our minds turn towards the holiday period. We become aware of families spending more time together, roads are quieter, and public transport fills up with excited children, young people and older passengers taking advantage of the freedom the summer season offers. With that freedom from our usual routine, a break can give us a chance to be present to ourselves as well as attentive to others in a refreshing way.

In his first encyclical letter ‘Magnifica Humanitas’, Pope Leo XIV places the human person at the centre of all that we do as human beings. During the past couple of years, I have become more aware of those who serve us in the public sector: whether as educators, emergency workers, hospitality staff, those working in health and social care, or employees within the transport system. I admire the warmth of their humanity, their patience with challenging people, and their willingness to be available at the most inconvenient hours of the day. I am also struck by the way members of the public show their appreciation and gratitude to those who serve us, and feel for those workers who receive verbal or physical abuse when we encounter disruption or inconvenience.

One of the phrases that struck me in the encyclical and in many of the messages of Pope Leo is ‘disarming words’. Some words can be very hurtful towards others and to ourselves. In those moments when we are tempted, may we disarm our words for the benefit of others - and our own good too!”

News from around the province Developing our community Following some sterling work by Grand Knight Mark and Council 493, I am delighted to report that there is a genuine possibility of establishing a new council at the University of Liverpool. This would provide Catholic students with an opportunity to join the order during their time at university and become involved in our mission of charity, unity and fraternity. A meeting is currently being arranged for interested students and, with the support of knights from across Liverpool province, we will ensure this exciting new venture has the very best opportunity to flourish.

Lourdes 2026 Many of our brothers took part in the Archdiocese of Liverpool’s Pilgrimage to Lourdes.

During the pilgrimage they supported fellow pilgrims, particularly the elderly, sick and disabled, assisting with practical arrangements, offering companionship and helping to ensure that everyone could participate fully in this special spiritual experience.

Council 51 – The Wirral Council 51 is organising a fundraising event with a difference. A ‘Pig Race Night’ will be held at St Joseph’s Parish Hall, Upton. We wish the council every success with what promises to be an entertaining and well-supported evening. Photos will follow in the next edition.

Why Faith in Action celebration gives fresh hope Father Simon Gore from Animate Youth Ministries reflects on the end-of-year awards for the Faith in Action programme and what they tell us about our young people.

The Archdiocese of Liverpool recently celebrated three joyful and grace‑filled days for this year’s Faith in Action Awards.

Around 300 young people each day came together and the atmosphere across all three days was marked by pride, gratitude, and a sense of genuine hope as our young people were recognised for the ways they have lived out the Gospel in their schools, parishes, and communities.

The award ceremonies were led by Archbishop John Sherrington and Bishop Tom Neylon, each offering words of encouragement that spoke directly to the heart of the programme: that faith is not simply something we hold, but something we do. Their presence was a powerful reminder that the Church sees, values, and celebrates the witness of its young people.

We had schools in attendance from all over the archdiocese, with young people ranging from Year 6 all the way through to Year 11.

There were also some Sixth Form helpers alongside our team of volunteers who came to ensure the days ran smoothly – a big thanks to them! The result was a real sense of diocesan togetherness.

After the formal presentations, the celebrations continued with a lively ‘fun day’, giving the young people time to relax and enjoy being together. The garden was filled with colour and laughter as inflatables, arcade games, and other activities brought out plenty of friendly competition. It was a simple but joyful way of marking the end of a year of service, prayer and reflection, and a way for the archdiocese to thank the young people for their service.

Lauren’s commitment, creativity, and pastoral care have left a lasting legacy, and her contribution was warmly acknowledged. She even received her own unique plaque from Bishop Tom with all four award level badges!

Across all the days, what stood out most was that sense of hope.

These young people – 300 each day and another 1,000 who could not make the awards ceremonies – represent a Church that is alive, outward‑looking, and rooted in service. Their projects and reflections show that faith continues to inspire compassionate service and courageous witness.

As the archdiocese looks ahead, we do so with gratitude for everyone who supports our young people. We also celebrate those who received their awards and look to the future with confidence that the seeds planted through Faith in Action will continue to bear fruit.

This year’s celebrations carried a particular poignancy as we marked the final Faith in Action Awards under the leadership of Lauren Lynch, who has guided the programme for the past 10 years. Her dedication has shaped the award into a cornerstone of youth ministry in the archdiocese, helping thousands of young people discover how their gifts can build up the Church and transform their communities.

Liverpool interfaith walk brings communities together

Interfaith walks have played an important role in community cohesion over the past few years. As part of our charism, we in the Missionaries of Africa would never miss a chance to participate in such encounters, which foster mutual understanding and community cohesion. As members of a small group known as Scriptural Reasoning (SR), we planned this annual walk to continue building bridges of religious tolerance in Liverpool and beyond. We are grateful to all who supported us in different ways. The below was written by Adeline Salim, one of our parishioners who attended this year’s walk for the first time.

Now in its fourth year, the event on 2 July attracted more than 230 participants, with some travelling from well beyond the Liverpool region. The event began at St Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, now home to the University Chaplaincy, which was included in the walk for the first time. After introducing the history of the building, including its recent appearance in the TV series ‘This City Is Ours’, Fr Neil Ritchie, the chaplain, answered questions from participants. He spoke about efforts to build relationships across faith communities through both social outreach and dialogue. During university term time, students from Catholic and other Christian traditions volunteer at the soup kitchen run by the Missionaries of Charity Sisters. The chaplaincy regularly welcomes student groups from other faiths. Fr Neil emphasised the Church’s desire to become more outward-looking and to engage positively with people of different religious traditions.

Will Kelly, a Liverpool resident, commented: “The first thing that struck me about this event, and what I will remember for months to come, is the number of people who attended. It’s a rare enough thing when you get to see a church, a synagogue, and a mosque packed with so many different souls all brought together by this amazing expression of solidarity among the faiths in Liverpool.”

From there, Fr Stavros Kasinos led the group to the Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and merchants in honour of Liverpool’s maritime heritage. Born and raised in Liverpool, Fr Stavros explained several aspects of Orthodox tradition, including the customary seating arrangement in which men and women sit separately, with unmarried women traditionally seated in the upstairs gallery behind a low screen.

Next stop was the Princes Road Synagogue where Dr Peter Grant, a member of the synagogue’s board, guided visitors around the magnificent building, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024.

He related that when Liverpool’s Jewish community commissioned their flagship synagogue, seven architectural firms submitted 30

designs, six of them Jewish. The winning design, however, came from the Scottish Presbyterian Audsley brothers. Visitors admired the richly decorated interior, adorned with intricate geometric and floral patterns but notably free of human images – a feature immediately recognised by several Muslim participants. This provided an interesting contrast with St Nicholas’s, whose walls are filled with icons of Christ, the Holy Family, and saints.

Questions followed about Jewish traditions, including the differences between Orthodox and Progressive Judaism, particularly concerning the role of women and practices surrounding ritual purity, such as immersion in the mikveh (ritual bath). The highlight came at the end of the tour, when Dr Grant drew back the heavy curtains to reveal the Ark containing the Torah scrolls, a breathtaking sight that drew audible admiration from the crowd.

The final stop was the Al Rahma Mosque where Dr Badr Abdullah, chair of the Liverpool Muslim Society (LMS), recounted how Liverpool’s Muslim community began in 1953 when Al-Haj Ali Hizzam, a Yemeni sailor, opened a prayer room in his own home.

The journey towards deeper interfaith understanding has not always been easy. Mustafa Abdul Yassir of LMS reflected: “There are people who want us to fear our differences rather than celebrate them. They want to convince us that there cannot be a church, a synagogue, and a mosque on the same street, let alone share the same vision of a peaceful community. But look around you today - this interfaith walk is our answer to that. When we open our doors to one another, fear evaporates. When we discover that mercy, charity, and love of neighbour are woven throughout the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an, we realise just how much we truly share.”

Rocio, a participant from Mexico, agreed: “We are all brothers and sisters as we are all sons of God. This walk was a reminder of the similarities rather than what could make us different. I had the honour to hear about other people’s experiences of meeting God which reminded me of His Greatness and Highness.” Another participant, Abdulwase Sufian, affirmed: “If the hearts are united, the people will be united.”

Perhaps the greatest sign of that unity came afterwards as everyone gathered around a shared meal at the recently opened World Faith Cafe. Conversations continued long into the evening, proving once again that friendship often begins with simply walking together and sharing a table. We are ready to share our experiences with everyone who is interested in interfaith and interreligious dialogue, whether that be in parishes and families of parishes, or deaneries and institutions of learning.
