Announcing the CBAC-sponsored 2020 Online Art Auction

By Dorothy Hoffman Please join us for this virtual event at cbayarts-auction.org! Our online auction for 2020 will replace both “Art on the Bay” and “The Gathering.” The online auction will showcase and support visual and performance artists in the Chequamegon Bay Area.

Call for Artists— Visual and Performing • 100 artists maximum. One item per artist, first come, first served. All visual art must be original and created by the participating artist.

• Online bidding begins at 9 a.m. on S ­ unday, September 27, and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 2. Site will open for viewing Friday, September 25, at 9 a.m.

• Unless otherwise arranged, buyers can pick up their purchases at the Washburn Cultural Center on Saturday, October 3, from 3-5 p.m. Exchange will occur in the adjacent park if weather permits; inside if not. COVID protocol, please: masked and distanced.

• Two ways to participate: • Donate an item: $50 minimum value, CBAC sets minimum bid, all proceeds go to CBAC. • Gallery Item: $200 minimum value, artist sets minimum bid, 80% of sale price to artist, 20% to CBAC. • To submit a piece for the auction, print out and complete the entry form on page 12 or download a fillable form at cbayarts.org.

• In an online auction, pieces are represented photographically so a quality image is important. Include at least one, and up to three, images of the piece. Image must be a JPG, PNG, or SVG file format, ideally with resolution of at least 150 ppi. (If producing such an image is difficult for you, help will be available. See entry form on page 12 for contact.)

• All submissions must be received by Dorothy Hoffman by 5 p.m., Thursday, September 10. Paper entries, using the form on page 12 of this issue, are to be mailed or hand-delivered to DHoffman at 89060 E. Romans Point Rd., Herbster, WI 54844 in time to meet the September 10 deadline.

• Artists are responsible to ensure delivery of sold works, including shipping to buyers out of the region. Sold works must be delivered/ shipped out no later than Friday, October 9.

• CBAC will handle all sales and issue payment via check for the artist’s portion of sold items, in addition to any shipping fees collected from buyer. Payment will be mailed to artists no later than October 15.

‘We Are All in This Together’

A story about how Norway declared a National Dugnad on March 12 came to my attention because, despite my Irish maiden name Carmody, I am a lot Norwegian. Because of this community effort, Norway is well into reopening.

The idea that “We Are All in This Together” is the theme of an opportunity we will be involved in with some monies from Arts Wisconsin. While it is still in the conceptual stages, I can tell you that it is akin to WPA. The Work Projects Administration was a New Deal agency created to put people to work after the Great Depression, and the WPA workers included artists. Public artwork helped pull us out of that disaster, and I believe that our collective creative spirit will help us get through this.

Because of the nature of this particular disaster, our lives and livelihoods have moved to digital platforms. Thanks to our new partner and board member J Erin Hutchinson, we as artists are able to offer our creations on her new digital marketplace, Authentic Superior. See page 3 for both an update from Erin and Sharon Stewart’s article about CBAC’s collaboration and financial support to promote Authentic Superior.

CBAC is having a fundraiser, of sorts, this fall. I say, of sorts because the primary intention for this online auction is to provide our area artists a way to sell their art, or a performance in the case of musicians, during a time when most galleries are closed and art festivals cancelled. Any gallery item offered at this auction for sale by the artist will net 80% of the sale for the artist, with a 20% commission going to CBAC. We also have supporters who are looking for ways to support CBAC directly. With that in mind, besides Gallery items for sale, we will be accepting straight-up donations of original art with all of the proceeds benefitting CBAC. See pages 1, 12, and 16 for more details.

This will be happening the last days of September. It wouldn’t be happening at all if it weren’t for the technical skills of Erin Hutchinson and Grace Hogan. Thank you also to co-chair Dorothy Hoffman who not only has creative ideas but also is so good with words. Thank you to Gayle Chatfield for her input which always puts artists front and center. And last but not least what would we do without Cathy Lange who ties it all up in a bow and presents it to our audience of artists and patrons.

Fall 2020

CBAC is pleased to partner with J Erin Hutchinson in the development and promotion of a web-based marketplace— Authentic Superior—for local artists. CBAC has contracted with Erin’s company, Narrative Shift, in order to provide funding for Authentic Superior to support local artists in: • Developing artists’ websites • Photographing their artwork to provide high-resolution images for marketplace items • And eventually launching the Authentic Superior site to regional markets with print and online advertisements.

This investment of CBAC funds responds directly to the top-rated priority in CBAC’s spring survey of local artist’s needs during the pandemic.

We hope that our member artists read the announcement about Authentic Superior in the summer newsletter and are preparing items to list for sale and composing an artist statement for posting on the Authentic Superior website.

By now, it is patently clear that the pandemic will not be over quickly and that online shopping will continue to expand as a market for housewares and gifts. Artists are encouraged to list items for sale on this new online venue by contacting Erin Hutchinson (see contact information at left).

Profiles Instrumental Music in the Chequamegon Bay Area

By Kathy Broadwell “ Music is what language would love to be if it could.“—Irish poet, John O’Donohue During this unusual and unprecedented time of social isolation due to the COVID-19 virus, we all realize how important the arts are to our mental health. In the Chequamegon Bay region, we are blessed with many groups that bring us the joy of music. These articles highlight several of our area’s instrumental groups.

Although music is best experienced through person-to-person sharing, we now have the technology to share r­ emotely and will be doing so for the next several months. When we have conquered the virus and can once again join together in this appreciation of music, the following groups will be ready to become active once again in sharing the joy and light of the art of music.

Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra

By Linda Calhan The Chequamegon Symphonette was founded in 1965 by a committee of symphonic music enthusiasts with a vision to establish a community/college orchestra in northern Wisconsin. Fifty-five years later and with an updated name, the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra (CSO) continues to provide enriching, engaging, and entertaining concerts to a loyal and supportive audience.

The CSO founders envisioned an ensemble that would perform repertoire from all musical eras, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. The musical styles of each era closely follow the visual, literary, and architectural styles of the same time periods. The symphony’s membership includes strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The strings sections are team players and have the largest representation in the orchestra. Woodwinds,

brass, and percussionists are solo performers usually with two players in each section; that is, two flutes, two oboes, two trumpets, etc.

According to Northland College Professor Emeritus Joel Glickman, CSO conductor for 43 years, “One of the reasons for the orchestra’s longevity is that we have a college/community partnership. Northland College provides financial support for a CSO conductor and use of the Alvord Theatre for rehearsals and most performances. In turn, the CSO Board purchases and maintains Northland College instruments and equipment.” The CSO season, including fall, winter, and spring concerts, follows the Northland College academic calendar.

Flutist and 29-year CSO veteran, Leslie Kolesar has the longest tenure with the orchestra. Leslie commented, “The music is what brought me here, but the people are what

keep me coming back every season.” Although three CSO members are area music educators, by far, most of the musicians have non-music related professions. The CSO welcomes the participation of talented high school students.

When she assumed the CSO conductor’s position in 2017, Jesika Cane said, “My goal is to uphold Joel’s level of musicianship by continuing to have the CSO prepare and perform a wide variety of music that engages the musicians and delights the audience at a price that minimizes financial barriers to attendance.”

In 2015 for the CSO’s 50th anniversary, the CSO Board established the Joel Glickman CSO Music Scholarship given annually to a Northland College student who has demon­strated solid preparation, leadership, and maintained steady attendance.

In 2018, the CSO initiated the CSO High School Music Award given to two high school CSO members as incentive to pursue their musical interests and to provide encouragement to continue participating in a symphony orchestra.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Northland College has closed the campus to the public through December 2020. The CSO expects to resume rehearsals in January 2021 for an April concert. Please visit http://www. chequamegonsymphony.org/ for updated information.

The Historic Ironwood Theatre is known for its main auditorium, but the mezzanine level is no less deserving of praise.

The mezzanine features a 1920’s golden era Mason & Hamlin grand piano and intimate seating for about 35 people.

The Players scheduled a total of 36 performances in 2020.

In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birth year, the Players included music by Beethoven monthly throughout 2020.

Currently these series are on indefinite hold due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Players are the only all-local chamber music series in the entire region. All other area chamber music series are largely bringing in ensembles from the Twin Cities and elsewhere. This focus on investing in local chamber music culture and musicians is unique to the Players, and takes the lead in building a bona fide local chamber music scene.

The Players artistic direction is also unique in this area, emphasizing performance with a high level of clarity and expressiveness. Audiences can expect enjoyable and engaging concerts, experiencing accessible music played with joy, vigorous energy, and informed musicianship.

Garland City Chamber Players

By Neil Paynter The Garland City Chamber Players is a collaboration of ­local musicians in the Chequamegon Bay region, focused on chamber music ranging from Baroque to Romantic.

Starting in 2020, the Players organized three chamber ­music series: Second Sundays at Saron at Saron Lutheran Church; Music in the Museum at the Ashland Historical Society Museum; and Music in the Mezzanine at the Historic Ironwood Theatre.

The Music at the Museum series featured the Museum’s Chickering Piano, the first keyboard instrument in the region.

Its construction style and sound is much closer to the pianos that Beethoven used than any modern piano, and is tuned to approximately A430hz. As such, the Music at the Museum series has the region’s only performances at historic pitch.

Garland City Consort

By Andrew McInnes The Garland City Consort is the Chequamegon Bay’s chamber orchestra, performing year-round since our founding in 2016. We formed around the famous “Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi, which we took on tour to four different regional venues. In that debut tour, we were the first classical music ensemble to perform at the Historic Ironwood Theatre since the 1980s.

The Consort is the region’s only Baroque ensemble and one of the few musician-owned cooperatives in the entire world. We are local musicians ranging from retired profesContinued on page 6

sionals to students of area public schools. The Consort is also a conductor-less ensemble, which means we reply upon the musicianship and confidence of each other to make our music happen. We collaborate and grow together, jointly choosing and interpreting the music we perform.

COVID-19 represents a challenging situation for us, requiring new policies and a proactive, flexible approach in the face of rapid changes. We had 13 planned performances in 2020, with all having been cancelled in March. When we resumed rehearsing in June until mid-July, we practiced physical distancing and took everyone’s temperature. The Consort’s board relaxed attendance requirements and established a policy that if masks became required we would go on hiatus, which as of this printing is indeed the case.

We are proud to have joined the first “Make Music Day” in the Chequamegon Bay region, a global celebration of music held every 21st of June. This year’s celebration was all the more poignant because of COVID-19. We ensured physical distancing at the event, provided masks, and took everyone’s temperature. Our in-person audience was extremely understanding, and we are grateful for everyone who attended in person or watched via livestream.

Globally the performing arts are seriously challenged by the pandemic, as many groups are unable to rehearse, much less have an audience. It is going to take a very long time to rebuild from the damage being done to the arts. Despite this, our structure gives us flexibility and resilience in these times.

And our commitment to our music and each other means that we come out of this stronger than before.

Big Lake Orchestra

By Dr. Russell Thorngate The Big Lake Orchestra is the area’s youngest symphony, bringing together musicians for a summer festival of classical music. Our first festival was in July 2018, celebrating the music of Wolfgang Mozart. Last year we invited the area to Party Like It’s 1769, taking a retrospective of the greatest hits from 250 years ago, but with air conditioning.

Along with the rest of the BLO’s leadership, I am watching the situation surrounding the corona virus. I was saddened to have postponed the 2020 Festival until next year. That said, I would prefer to err on the side of caution. The health and safety of musicians and audiences alike are paramount.

At this point I still am hopeful we can proceed next year, and so as the conductor and artistic director of the Big Lake Orchestra, I invite you ahead of time to our 2021 Festival: A Night in Old Vienna, coming July 9-11. I take pride in how we tap into the amazing number of talented musicians who live

Despite the challenges of the coronavirus, I remain excited to announce that the BLO is sponsoring the creation of the Chequamegon Bay’s first permanent string quartet: the Big Lake String Quartet. A major draw to this area is a robust local classical music scene. The Quartet will be a big step forward for the BLO’s festival, and a new chapter in local classical music. The exact timeline for launching the Quartet is uncertain, but I am hopeful it will be yet this year.

The BLO is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt symphony, with the mission of cultural investment in the Chequamegon Bay region. Our performances are free and open to the public, so we’re entirely reliant on advertising, sponsorships, and donations for our funding. With those funds, we hire local musicians, advertise local businesses, and perform in local venues. Spending locally means we’re investing in classical music, and musicians, right here in the Chequamegon Bay region.

from as far away as Oslo, Norway. Most concerts, which take place during the academic year, are still being performed at its original venue. The Messiah also found a home with ACMS in 2005 and is presently an annual event at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. We try to vary each concert between strings, brass, woodwinds and choral, as well as the programming for each.

Our mission is to have regional musicians as well as other high-quality fine arts groups perform at a price that is affordable to our area. We also do educational outreach when available and offer concerts for free to students. In 2016, the Lake Superior Magazine wrote a beautiful article about ACMS, referring to the Ashland Chamber Music Society as a “Chamber Music Sanctuary.”

ACMS is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization. It has a dedicated board and group of volunteers who work to put on our concerts, as well as dealing with the planning and the eternally difficult funding situation. We have been blessed with loyal supporters who attend our concerts and donate to our organization. And we also remain grateful to the Chequamegon Bay Arts Council, which were our original fiscal receivers, and have supported us through many seasons.

As the organization heads into the 2020-2021 season, it is obvious that things will not be the same this season due to the pandemic. ACMS, like other organizations, are presently weighing in when it will be safe to hold concerts again.

However, as we know how healing and comforting music can be, we are hopeful that the music will play on when the pandemic has settled.

The Ashland Chamber Music Society

By Sheila Mitchell The Ashland Chamber Music Society is a predominantly classical accoustic concert series with the goal of putting on six high-quality concerts during the academic year. The annual Messiah sing-a long, originally started by Tom Draughon, is also a part of this concert series.

ACMS started in 2001 when Mary Hymans and I (both musicians and private music teachers at the time) were lamenting the lack of performance opportunities in Ashland.

Together, we decided to pursue a series of concerts. We looked for a venue and funding, sent out notices through “snail mail,” and put adds in the Daily Press. Little did we know how much work this would all be!

Our first concert was held in August of 2001 at the Presbyterian-Congregational Church in Ashland, with about 85 well-wishers attending. The program began with Joel Glickman (clarinet), Joni Chapman (piano), and myself (violin) performing Darius Mihaud’s Suite for violin, clarinet and piano. This was followed by several selections for duo guitar performed by Tom Draughon and Steve Young, and a banjo solo with Steve. The concert concluded with the Claude Bowling Suite for flute, piano, bass and drums with Carolyn Haase (flute), Mary Hymans (piano), Debra Powers (bass), and Henry Niemann IV (drums).

Since that first concert, 113 wonderful concerts have been put on by ACMS, with local groups as well as groups hailing

‘North Country Seasons’: An Invitation to Area Artists to Collaborate

By Marina Lachecki The Four Seasons are a foundation for our life here in the North Country. We sing, dance, paint, draw, write, and tell stories about the four seasons. We have ancient cultural teachings which can deepen our understanding of them (Ojibwe, Celtic, European ethnic, African).

2021 exhibit, performances, and workshops If you are a visual or performing artist in the ­Chequamegon Bay area, you are invited to exhibit existing work on the theme of the four seasons in a yearround art show, “North Country Seasons,” to be hung by the end of 2020. The project will also involve four seasonal performances and workshops (where you can collaborate with other artists to create new work) scheduled for January, April, June, and September 2021. Think: music, dance, storytelling, poetry, prose, pastels, pen and ink, photography, acrylics, watercolors. All these activities will take place at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center outside of Ashland, Wisc., or with some virtual applications as we continue to monitor the health needs of the region.

How did this project come about?

The project was inspired by the Chequamegon Bay Arts Council’s 2019 spring community art show, “Art Heals.”

The call for entries for that show said: “Art heals. It can lift, brighten, lighten, and enlighten. It informs, teaches, edifies, and can sanctify. It helps us uncover, reveal, confront, forgive, descend, ascend, and transcend.” To build upon that foundation, CBAC applied for and received a Creative Communities Grant this year from the Wisconsin Arts Board. The Creative Communities Program is a statewide competitive process which supports the creation and development of the arts at the local level.

The planning, teaching, and performing team are working now and will be advertising the details of these opportunities to all area artists and aspiring high school students as the project develops.

“Maple Wheel,” by Janet Moore

The project is coordinated by Marina Lachecki (a retired minister, singer, writer, and storyteller from Ashland): She has directed community arts grants (La Pointe Center and WI Arts Board) to develop a community choir and organize Marina Lachecki cabarets, festivals, and musicals on Madeline Island for the past 20 years. Her primary art is one of interdisciplinary collaboration, working with musicians, actors, dancers, potters, weavers, mixed media artists, painters, and playwrights. She is an author of three books (1990, Teaching Kids to Love the Earth; 1995, More Teachings Kids to Love the Earth; 1999, These Twelve Days), a published essayist (2009, 2019, 2020 in Lake Superior ­Magazine), and has produced two CDs as a community arts project on Madeline Island (2011, Across the Water, and 2018, Lake Affections).

The following area artists will participate as workshop teachers and performers:

• Rob Goslin, Sr. (an Ojibwe storyteller and cultural educator from Bayfield): Rob is a tribal member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Indians. He holds a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Higher Education. Rob has spent his career of over 40 years in American Indian communities The project is in partnership with the Northern Great Lakes Visitor both on a local, regional, and national level, with the majority Center and is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts of his experience focusing on community wellness. ment and has held key administrative positions in his tribe.

He is known as a historian and storyteller and has practiced his cultural traditions the majority of his life. One of his many accomplishments is the development of a cultural-based 10-week parenting curriculum called “The Circle of Life Parenting Program.” He currently works as an historical interpreter and educator for the Madeline island Museum.

• Sharon Handy (an intentional creativity instructor and retired doctor from Ashland): Sharon’s artistic background includes fiber and fabric arts, creating labyrinths, and ceramic and stone mosaics. She has served on the Board of the Grand Rapids Ballet company, directing their artisan boutique. For the past decade she has studied the intersection of art and spirituality through Abbey of the Arts. She believes that art has the power to heal us as individuals and to bridge gaps between people who do not immediately recognize their common humanity. She approaches art through the lens of a healer (40 years as a family physician). She is a Teacher-in-Training of Intentional Creativity (TM) with Shiloh Sophia.

• Regina Laroche (a dancer, storyteller, and farmer from La Pointe): Regina has provided interactive, rhythm-driven, cross-cultural creative arts and education experiences to schools, churches, retreat centers, and the general public for over 30 years. Her work is inspired by Inter-Play, her multi-cultural heritage, Afro-Caribbean dance, as well as farming on the edge of Lake Superior. She created Diaspora Arts and Gardens to nurture connection with the natural world. She has worked with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, schools districts in the Chequamegon Bay Area, Madison, Wisc., and the Twin Cities, and in the International School of Zug and Luzern in Switzerland. Current offerings include: “Rising: Spirit, Voice, Stirrings in the Movement for Justice” and “Three Seasons of Stories: Harvest, Dream, and Water.”

• Barbara Meyer (a musician, theater artist, and musical therapist from La Pointe and Minneapolis): Barb is a professional vocalist, guitarist, and all-around performer. As an accomplished musician and theater artist with excep-

tional knowledge of human dynamics, Barbara works with elders through musical and therapeutic connection. She fronts several bands (B & the Sting, Imaginary Numbers, World Beat Connection) and plays frequently on Madeline Island and in Hudson, Wisc., with various iterations of these groups. She toured with her female world music trio, ­Zingara, to Eagle River to play a concert and church services, as well as touring in Wisconsin with One World (a Twin Cities reggae band). She has recorded two CDs of her own songs and one CD covering Harold Arlen tunes.

Her songwriting is heavily influenced by the beauty of our natural world, particularly the North Shore and surrounding areas.

• Janet Moore (a visual artist, naturalist, and environmental educator from La Pointe): Janet’s work is informed by a deep and direct relationship with the natural world. She holds degrees in Art and Environmental Studies. Combining her interests in art, environment, and indigenous culture, Janet teaches the integration of art and science, using observational drawing and journaling to capture experiences in nature. She sees art as a language that crosses cultures, empowers people, promotes caring for the environment, and communicates a sense of place. She has worked for the UW-Madison Arboretum’s Earth Partnerships for Schools program, the LEAF K-12 Forestry Program, and as an independent presenter, teacher, and consultant for art, nature, and science integration.

• Jan Wise (a visual artist, spiritual director, and art teacher from Washburn): Jan’s career as an artist spans four decades. With an M.A. in Art, she has taught art in public schools, directed a design studio, and worked as a commissioned artist. Her mediums include fiber arts, masonite, airbrush on fabric, weaving, and acrylics. Painting stories, both mythical and factual, Jan’s favorite subjects include natural wonders and wonderful beings alike. She is the author of A Storytelling of Ravens and Crows World Lore (2012). Wise is a CBAC member and is a frequent contributor to and curator of regional arts shows.

Grants Aiming to Make Grant ­Applications Available in ­December

Laeken Ramsey is from Mason and gradu­ ated from Drummond High School. In the fall, she will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Superior to pursue a double major in music and art education.

Taylor Vyskocil is also from Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School. She will be attending Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minn., in the fall and plans to major in music education.

By LeeAnn Frey Once again CBAC is happy to announce the winners of the 2020 High School Scholarships.

Jocelyn Rewalt lives in Ashland and grad­ uated from Ashland High School. She will be pursuing a major in musical theatre at Virterbo College in the fall.

Because of the changes in the school calendar year, CBAC extended the deadline for applicants to July 1. CBAC was also able to award three $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors in our area who will be pursuing further education in the arts.

We’re concentrating on positive thoughts and hoping we can continue our normal grant cycle in 2021. So, if that is the case, Arts Initiative Grant applications will be available December 1, 2020 at cbayarts.org and will be due Monday, January 18, 2021. Grant announcements will be made February 15.

Arts Initiative Grants support the creation of projects in a variety of disciplines that may include public exhibitions, performances, publications, commissioned art, and educational activities.

CBAC serves as a regranting agency for the Wisconsin Arts Board. Through this collaboration, CBAC offers grant opportunities to artists and organizations in Bayfield and Ashland counties.

Profession: Primary: I’ve owned/run Narrative Shift, a digital/print design, marketing, and go-to-market strategy firm, the past 10 years. I also own Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management services company focused on the South Shore, and just launched Authentic Superior, a nonprofit organization focused on establishing a strong brand for the South Shore region and increasing revenue flowing to creative “producers” in the region.

What is your interest in the arts? To me, creativity is the core of life, like breathing.

And so, I’ve always been passionate about the arts – creating, supporting others who create it, and appreciating its power to connect us. Right now, my focus is more on helping bring more visibility to those who make a living from the arts in the South Shore region (be they painters, writers, musicians, farmers, etc.).

Whatever I can do as a board member to help support our artists and bring more visibility to the incredible work that gets produced here. I’m thrilled to be able to bring my marketing and design experience to the board!

What is your involvement with CBAC?

Right now, I’m keen on seeing how we can create more opportunities for the arts in virtual realms – the web, social media, etc., given how the pandemic has resulted in in-person experience of the arts so much more challenging (if not impossible). And, some day I’d love to see an ­exhibit centered around a South Shore regional interpretation of the “Dogs Playing Poker” painting, but that’s just my kitschy sense of humor bubbling up to the surface....

What is your ­vision for CBAC?

Other interests: Baking (used to be a pastry chef & still love being in the kitchen), my three dogs, target shooting, hiking (or anything related to being outdoors and enjoying the beauty of this area), reading, or just staring out at the lake with a good glass of wine.
