A Jubilee Year is a significant moment in the life of the Church in which she celebrates the year of messianic favour inaugurated by Christ through his Incarnation and Paschal Mystery. Proclaimed every twenty‐five years since the thirteenth century, the celebration of jubilee years typically includes pilgrimages, processions, celebrations of Mass, and an invitation to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The theme for this Jubilee is “Pilgrims of Hope”, and the Pope’s Letter of Inauguration suggests several ways to bring Christ and his message of hope to the world, for example, by working for peace and an end to conflicts, promoting human life, showing amnesty to prisoners, upholding the dignity of migrants, healing the sick and accompanying the elderly – or even through the forgiveness of debts, a custom of jubilee years in the Old Testament.
The Lord Jesus is the door of our salvation a fact which is symbolised through the spiritual practice of passing through specially designated doors of various churches. The opening of the Holy Door at St John Lateran on December 29 2024 will coincide with the diocesan opening of the Jubilee Year, when diocesan bishops throughout the world are to celebrate Mass in every cathedral and co‐cathedral.
This year also marks the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, which, among other things, discussed the method for calculating the date of Easter. Providentially, the dates for the celebration of Easter on the Julian and Gregorian calendars will coincide in 2025; East and West will celebrate the Lord’s resurrection together. This concurrence is an appeal for all Christians to take a step toward unity on this most important feast. May our celebration witness to our unity in Christ, heal divisions, and be a sign of communion.
Finally, thanks go to all who have made the publication of this Yearbook possible. We appreciate their hard work and attention to detail.
We pray that as we begin this Jubilee Year of hope we might all become beacons of hope for each other and for the world in which we live.
In blessed hope,
Bishop of Middlesbrough

Diocesan Archivist: Appointment awaited, tel: (01642) 850505, email: archives@rcdmidd.org.uk. Middlesbrough Diocesan Archives is the main central repository for historical records relating to the diocese and the churches within its present boundaries. As well as primary source documents, the archives contain a library of books on Catholic Church history. While this is a private collection, not open every day, visitors are welcome by prior appointment. Contact should be established in the first instance by telephoning or writing to the archivist. Enquiries are welcome and the archivist will do his best to answer these either by letter or by arranging for enquirers to visit the archives and view records for themselves. For those researching family history, be aware that although many older sacramental registers are held here, others remain in parishes. Please note also that a fee will be charged for searches carried out by the archivist on behalf of family historians at a rate of £20 for each hour or part thereof, and printed copies of certificates cost £5 each. There is no charge for visiting the archives, or for baptismal certificates required for the purpose of marriage.

INSTITUTES OF CONSECRATED LIFE
SECULAR INSTITUTES
CARITAS CHRISTI
An international secular institute for women in which members make a commitment for life to be totally given to God. Out of love they choose to live a celibate life in order to dedicate their love in its completeness to God, the Church and all people. Their service is given in the circumstances of their everyday lives, home and work. They remain lay people. If you are single or widowed and would like more information, write to Fiona Wraith, 41 Means Drive, Burradon NE23 7NS.
A secular institute for single women and widows who wish to consecrate themselves completely to God following the traditions and spiritual life of the Carmelite family. For information: The Secretary, The Leaven, Aylesford Friary, Kent, ME20 7BX, tel: 01582 766580 email theleavensi@gmail.com, website: theleaven.org.uk
SOCIETIES OF APOSTOLIC LIFE
MADONNA HOUSE APOSTOLATE
Madonna House is an apostolic family in the Church of lay women, lay men and priests, dedicated to loving and serving Christ in all people. We make lifetime promises of poverty, chastity and obedience. Our main house and training centre is in Combermere, Canada. Approximately 200 members serve in 16 field houses in six countries. In 1985, Madonna House was invited to take responsibility for St Bede’s Chapel in Robin Hood’s Bay and to develop a pastoral centre. There are four members here. People are welcome to drop in for a chat and cup of tea, to spend quiet time in prayer or make a personal retreat. Our house is also open to groups. Sometimes it is for Mass and a talk and a gettogether, perhaps a packed lunch or shared meal. Sometimes it is for a day of recollection or an experience of community life. Please call to book a day. Members are also available to travel elsewhere in the diocese to give talks. Contact: Madonna House, Thorpe Lane, Robin Hood’s Bay, YO22 4TQ, tel: (01947) 880169, email: madonnahouserhb@gmail.com, website: madonnahouse.org

CARMELITE DISCALCED SECULAR ORDER (OCDS)
Carmelite Discalced Seculars (OCDs) are members of a lay community called to live ‘in allegiance with Jesus Christ’. Under the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and inspired by the teaching of St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, St Thérèse of Lisieux and other Discalced Carmelite saints, they seek to infuse prayer and life with apostolic zeal. God may be calling you to a vocation as a Discalced Carmelite Secular. We meet the first Monday of the month at Christ the King Church, Trenchard House, Thornaby, TS17 0EG. Contact Nora Borg on (01642) 761504.
CARMELITE THIRD ORDER SECULAR (TOC)
The Carmelite Third Order Secular welcomes lay people and diocesan clergy seeking to be contemplatives by God’s grace, forming praying communities at the service of God’s people. Carmelite Tertiaries and enquirers from the diocese are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of York Carmelite Spirituality group. For further information email verrington@btinternet.com.
The Secular Franciscan Order, founded by St Francis of Assisi, is an order within the Catholic Church. Members, of which there are more than 500 in the UK, make a lifetime profession to join the order but remain in their secular state living in the world. Their rule and life is dedicated to observing the Gospel in the secular world by going from Gospel to life and life to Gospel. They support each other by gathering regularly in local fraternities and in the spirit of the beatitudes they seek to share the love of God with all people and all of Creation. NB: THE LECTIONARY
SUNDAY READINGS FOR 2025: YEAR C
WEEKDAY READINGS FOR 2025: YEAR I
The new edition of the Lectionary for Mass (Ordo Lectionum Missae) confirmed by the Apostolic See in 2023 comes into use in England and Wales on the First Sunday of Advent 2024.
By decree of the Bishops’ Conference, “From that date forward, no other English language edition of the Lectionary for Mass may be used in the dioceses of England and Wales.”
Annual Mass Counts must take place the last two weeks of September and first two weeks of October
THE ORDER TO BE OBSERVED IN THE PRAYING OF THE DIVINE OFFICE AND THE CELEBRATION OF MASS FOR THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2025
INTRODUCTION
The Calendar which follows combines the General Roman Calendar with the English National Calendar and Middlesbrough Diocesan Supplements. Parishes should add to this their Titular Feast and the Anniversary of Dedication or Consecration. Both of these are celebrated as Solemnities. Should they coincide with Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter Week
or any other solemnity, they are transferred to the nearest free day. If it is considered pastorally beneficial the Mass may be transferred to the nearest Sunday, provided this is an ordinary Sunday of the year.
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE CELEBRATION OF MASS AND DIVINE OFFICE
SUNDAY
The Sundays of Advent, Lent and Eastertide are Solemnities. On these Sundays no other celebration may replace that of the Sunday.
The Sundays of Christmastide and Sundays in Ordinary Time are Feasts. These can be replaced by an occurring Solemnity. Sundays in Ordinary Time can also be replaced by Feasts of the Lord but by no other Feasts. On Sundays which are Feasts, the Mass of the Sunday may be replaced by a Funeral Mass or Ritual Mass, but other Masses may only be celebrated on the directions of, or with the permission of, the Bishop.
At Mass on Sundays there are three Readings, and the Gloria, except in Advent and Lent, and the Creed are said. The Office starts with Evening Prayer I. The Te Deum is said, except in Lent.
SOLEMNITIES
MASS: Prayers, Readings and Preface are taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Three Readings are used, and the Gloria and Creed are said. Except on Holy days of Obligation, a Funeral Mass may be celebrated, but no other Mass may replace that of the Solemnity.
OFFICE: The Office is taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. It starts with Evening Prayer I. The Te Deum is said. At Midday Prayer the complementary Psalms are used, except on Sundays. Night Prayer after Evening Prayer I and II of Sunday is used.
FEASTS
MASS: Prayers, Readings and Preface are taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Two Readings are used except on Sundays. The Gloria is said, but the Creed only on Sundays. The Mass may be replaced by a Funeral Mass or ritual Mass but no other celebration.
OFFICE: The Office is taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Evening Prayer I is only said on Sundays. At Midday Prayer the Psalms of the day are said with the Antiphons of the Season or day. Night Prayer of the day is said.
OBLIGATORY MEMORIALS
MASS: The Opening Prayer is from the Proper or appropriate Common. If the other prayers are not proper, they may be taken from the Common or the Mass of the day. Unless at least one Reading is strictly Proper, the Readings of the Day are used. If no proper Preface is indicated, the Preface of the Season or of the weekday is used. A Mass of the Dead may replace that of the Memorial, as soon as notice of death is received, on the day of final burial and on the first anniversary. A Ritual Mass may be celebrated. Votive Masses may be only celebrated for exceptional pastoral reasons.
OFFICE: If any part of the Office is proper, then this is said. If not proper, the concluding prayer at Office of Readings, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer is taken from the Common, the Invitatory Antiphon and at Morning and Evening Prayer, the Hymn, Reading, Short Responsory, Benedictus/ Magnificat Antiphons and Intercessions from either the Common or the Office of the Day, and remainder from the Office of the Day.
OPTIONAL MEMORIALS
Optional Memorials should only be celebrated when there is genuine local devotion. It is not correct to celebrate all or even most of optional Memorials. When celebrated, they are celebrated in the same way as obligatory Memorials.
MEMORIALS DURING PRIVILEGED SEASONS
Memorials are not celebrated during Holy Week or Easter Week. During Lent, between 17th and 24th December and during the Octave of Christmas, all Memorials are optional. If selected, they are celebrated in the following way:
MASS: The Collect of the Memorial is said. The rest is of the Mass of the day.
OFFICE: In the Office of Readings the Reading of the Memorial is added as a third Reading, followed by its responsory and the concluding prayer of the Memorial. At Morning and Evening Prayer, the Antiphon and concluding Prayer of the Memorial may be added after the concluding prayer of the day.
WEEKDAYS
ADVENT, CHRISTMASTIDE, LENT AND EASTERTIDE
A Proper Mass is provided for each weekday during these seasons, and this should be used on all ordinary weekdays. The Mass of the day may only be replaced under same circumstances as the Mass of an Obligatory Memorial (see above). In the Office, the Psalms are taken from the four‐week Psalter, the rest from the Proper of Seasons.
ORDINARY WEEKDAYS
The Prayers at Mass may be taken from ANY Sunday of the Year, not just the previous Sunday or from a Votive Mass or one of the Masses for Various Needs and Occasions. Votive Masses, including Masses for the Dead may be celebrated, but these should be used sparingly. In particular the weekday Readings should not be omitted too frequently or without good reason. When it is necessary to omit the weekday readings, on account of some particular celebration, it is permissible to either combine parts omitted with other readings or to decide which readings are to be given preference over others.
THE LECTIONARY
In the Lectionary the SUNDAY READINGS for 2025, commencing on the First Sunday of Advent 2024 are taken from YEAR C.
THE WEEKDAY READINGS, commencing on TUESDAY 13th JANUARY, 2025, are taken from YEAR I.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS
There is always a choice to be made as to which Eucharistic Prayer and Preface is to be used. A helpful explanation may be found in the `Letter on Eucharistic Prayers` ‐ contained in `Vatican II Documents` edited by Flannery pp 233‐240.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER I has special `communicantes` which highlight the major Feast or rite being celebrated.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS I, II and III may be used with any Preface. However, Eucharistic Prayer II has its own Preface, and this may be used even when there is a seasonal Preface.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER IV may not be used on Feasts with their own Preface, nor may another Preface be used. The reason for this is that Eucharistic Prayer IV is modelled on the Eastern tradition which has irreplaceable Prefaces. Unlike the other Prefaces which end with the Praise of Angels and Saints for Redemption in Christ, the Preface of Eucharistic Prayer IV is in praise of God Himself ‐ Jesus Christ not being mentioned until after the Sanctus.
The EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS for MASSES OF RECONCILIATION may be used especially as Masses with a Unity, Peace, and Penitential theme.
MASS FOR THE PEOPLE
The obligation of Missa Pro Populo applies on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation.

Principal Means.
i) Announcing it and urging people to pray for the intention.
ii) By announcing it at the beginning of Mass.
iii) By including the intention in the Prayer of the Faithful.
iv) By means of publicity in parish newsletter etc.
Choice of Liturgical Texts
Normally, the Mass of the day is to be celebrated, especially on Sundays. Where a special Mass is permitted it is indicated in the Calendar. It is only permitted to replace the Mass of the Sunday on the following occasions:
I) Sunday between 18th and 25th January.
ONE Mass for the Unity of Christians.
II) Mission Sunday
ONE Mass for the spread of the Gospel.
III) Remembrance Sunday
ONE Mass for the dead of two World Wars.
IV) On a Sunday arranged locally.
ONE Mass ‘After the Harvest.’
At all Masses the readings corresponding to the Mass being celebrated should be used whether this is the Mass of the day or one of the Masses for various Needs and Occasions.
The Homily on Days of Prayer
As the homily is an integral part of the liturgy, on a Day of Prayer, the homily or a major part of it, should be related to the readings that are used at the Mass, and not given over entirely to the intention of the day of Prayer.

In Eucharistic Prayer I, the commmunicantes, Hanc Igitur and Qui Pridie are proper. At the end of Mass, the blessing and dismissal are omitted, and the Blessed Sacrament is carried in solemn procession to the Altar of Repose, where there is solemn Adoration until no later then midnight.
