Dear members, Here we are now in the middle of summer. How the months fly by! I hope that the recent heat wave didn’t cause too many issues with your exterior work. Please remember to keep yourselves protected when working long hours in the strong sunlight, suncream is not just for holidays.

I was speaking to the BCF recently and they informed me that the ongoing disruption in the Middle East is still influencing the price of oil, which is still fluctuating and increasing input costs for our sector. Every $10 on the oil price is said to equate to a 5% rise in raw materials cost for the paints industry. Additionally for our energy-intensive wallcovering manufacturers, the rise in the cost of gas is a major concern, which, of course affects us all further along the supply chain.

At the end of June, the PDA had a stand at the new National Painting and Decorating Show at the NEC. This show is now part of the larger Installer Show, albeit, in its own independent hall. It seemed strange being at the show in June, rather than the end of November, and not being at the Coventry Arena. For me, the show had a different feel and perspective, whereby it seemed that the number of dedicated painters and decorators passing through the halls was somewhat diminished in contrast to the Coventry event. Something new and positive this year was the Skills Hub. This was offered to PDA by the organisers of the Installer Show, who were keen to see apprentices working live each day during the three-day show. It comprised a large working area where we featured four of the apprentices who have taken part in this years’ Apprentice of the Year competitions. The feedback on this from visitors at the show was fantastic. It was also great to meet up with those of you who came to our stand. Thanks go to Mirka, for supplying us with a giveaway gift of one of their superb dust free sanding machines, the lucky winner was Janmar Decorative Solutions.

2 July saw the Premier Trophy Awards take place at Plaisterers’ Hall, London. It was a wonderful day seeing some of the work carried out during the previous year, where 35 certificates across seven categories were given out during the ceremony. Huge congratulations go to Cousins Ltd on becoming the 2026 Supreme Winner.

The seven Apprentice winners receiving awards were chosen from this year’s grand final competition in June.

Ria Smith, from Bagnalls picked up my CEO Recognition and Achievement Award. Congratulations go to each one of them.

Throughout the six regional heats across the four nations this year, all the apprentices have been truly outstanding. Sincere thanks go to my fellow judge, Andrew Davis from the APCT for all his commitment, passion and involvement with these competitions. Details of this year’s Trophy Awards event can be found over the next six pages of this magazine, with the Apprentice competition pages 22 and 23.

Application forms for the 2027 Premier Trophy Awards and the Apprentice Competition will be available on our website homepage from early autumn. When downloading, please note the closing date for both competitions.

Over the coming weeks, we are making a few subtle changes and upgrades to some of the pages on our website. More information will inform you of these changes on our fortnightly e-newsletter in due course.

Finally, our Networking Gala Dinner event on 3 October at the Liverpool Hilton Hotel is fast approaching. Details can be found on page 16 of this magazine and on our website. The evening will include, a drinks reception, the Apprentice Paperhanger Awards, a live band, and a sumptuous meal. I do hope some of you can join us. It would be great to see you there. The Painting and Decorating Association’s 37th Premier Trophy Awards.

More than 200 guests attended the event on 3 July, which opened with a welcome speech by PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie, followed by the presentation of accolades to winners of the Association’s Apprentice of the Year competition (see pages 22 and 23).

Guests enjoyed a three-course lunch before Simon Brewer, Chief Executive Officer at Main Sponsor Brewers Decorator Centres, was invited to the stage to give a speech in which he reflected on current events and their impact on the sector.

He also looked back to the origins of the Brewers business, which started out as a wallpaper producer and was launched by his great-grandparents Clement and Mary Brewer in 1904, adding snapshots of the company’s journey from a single shop in Eastbourne through to the present day, with around 250 stores across England and Wales.

Simon added that the ‘beating heart’ of the Brewers Group is to ‘play our part in making the world a brighter place.’

He was then joined by Neil Ogilvie and Scott O’Connell, President of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate to present the Premier Trophy Awards, the culmination of months of hard work by the judges from the ICWCI. The judging panel of Colin Barnes, Frank Scott, Trevor King, David Bristow and Paul Coward, led by Colin Baker, started the year with 103 entries to consider across seven categories. After much deliberation, visits were made to 53 sites across the country, including bridges, theatres, hotels, libraries and palaces, over the next few months.

A total of 34 accolades were presented during the ceremony, with 26 projects being commended, highly commended or very highly commended, seven category winners and one project, the conversion of a derelict department store into a five-star hotel by Cousins Ltd, selected as the Supreme Winner for 2026.

The refurbishment of Whiteleys, Queensway, Bayswater, was considered by the judges to have been completed to a very high standard, with challenging cutting-in between colours at highly visible positions.

A revitalised central staircase at the entrance was of particular note for the careful restoration of the intricate wrought iron balustrade, with a new section designed to meet modern safety standards.

It was an excellent result for Cousins Ltd, with the Supreme Winner project also taking the win for the Decorative category, alongside another win in New Build for a major development at The Beach Royal Bournemouth Hospital, which required a strict timeline, specialist finishes and reliable dust extraction.

Cousins Ltd was also awarded a Commendation in the New Build category for a ‘first class decorating job’ at Pinn River SEND School in Pinner.

The paintwork was to a very high standard, with some challenging cutting in between colours at highly visual positions. A revitalised staircase is now the centre of the hotel entrance, where the central highly detailed wrought iron balustrade was repainted. The client was very happy with the standards delivered and extra works added.

Very Highly Commended McEwan Decorating Services Ltd New Town Hotel, 8 York Place, Edinburgh A full redecoration to a Grade I listed boutique hotel in Edinburgh city centre.

Extensive use of bespoke wallpapers, chosen by the client, and care to reinstate the existing features, such as cornices and mouldings, has produced an excellent finish complementing the period property.

Highly Commended Decorella The Old Vicarage, Sheering Mill Lane, Sawbridgeworth Full redecoration of an old vicarage featuring bold design choices, the client and contractor collaborated closely to ensure every detail aligned with the design vision. Wallpaper featured intricate patterns requiring precise alignment and meticulous application. An impressive reflection of skill and attention to detail.

Commended Alliance Painting Ltd St Andrews Church, Church Lane, Langar, Nottingham This Grade I, 13th century church with architectural details more commonly associated with a cathedral. Scaffolding and towers were required to reach elevated areas, with exceptional care taken to protect the floor. The team can be proud of their craftsmanship and appreciation of the church’s historic importance.

Commended S&C Painting Services Ltd The Old Royal Library, 2 Worcester Road, Malvern The ground floor externally required overcoming a number of problems including an excessive gradient and only a few days of scaffold access. The wallpaper choice required very careful setting out and pattern balancing, with other trades on site too. Very well handled and excellent standard of work.

100 plus windows repaired, reputtied and decorated to a very high standard. Internally, the client noted the very high care in preparing plaster detailing before decoration. The highly carved architrave, skirtings and window shutters were also very carefully prepared to maintain sharpness of detail. This project would very much hold its own in the Highly Decorative class too.

Very Highly Commended Borthwick Decorators Ltd Redec of Cat A Four Story Town House Full redecoration to a Grade I city centre townhouse over four storeys. The contractor worked with an interior designer and the client, achieving a good finish to meet their requirements.

Highly Commended M Simmonds Decorating Contractors Ltd Lower Street, Quainton The external painting of a listed building. The house has a number historical movement features, which add to the character of the house. A long term relationship of trust has been developed between the client and contractor resulting in modern materials being used. This choice of finishes resulted in a very happy client, and great character feature being added to the village.

Commended Alliance Painting Ltd Wye House, Barn Street, Marlborough The external decoration of a private group housing complex. The client was very happy with the repair and painting over the wide range of the complex. The interface of the contractor and households helped in achieving a high standard of finish to the woodwork, and protection of the flowerbeds was commented on by the client

Commended Borthwick Decorators Ltd Exterior Painting to Arts & Crafts Category B House The works comprised the external redecoration to a Category B listed, Arts and Crafts house built in 1902, where substantial ivy and other growth was removed before works could commence. A clean and sharp finish has been achieved, to reinstate the character of the property.

Solberge Hall, Newby Wiske, Northallerton Phase two of three in a long-term refurbishment to an aging manor house, used as a wedding venue. The contractor has worked closely with the client, and been innovative in adopting spray techniques, eco-friendly materials and recycling of waste products.

Highly Commended Hugh Irwin Specialist Decorators Ltd Hillcot Farm, Pewsey, Wiltshire A barn conversion house. The existing and new floor binder along with rafters cleaned and refinished with great care. A number of rooms included matching wallpaper to the ceiling, this was very carefully balanced with matching pattern. Top class finishing.

Commended Decorating by Lee Friern Barnet Lane The original builders of this extension delivered poor quality throughout. Plasterwork was far below expected standards, so a range of techniques were used to restore surfaces to a high quality. The transformation of the front door, in particular is a notable example.

The client was extremely pleased with the results.

Commended M Simmonds Decorating Contractors Ltd Holy Trinity Church, Main Road, Drayton Parslow The repair and decoration of walls and ceiling in a listed church, a result of water ingress.

The client spoke very highly of the contractor, who developed the specification with the paint manufacturer to get the best product for the job. The level of protection to features and furniture, showed the workforce had respect for their surrounding. A first class job.

Hartwell Interior Decorators Ltd Gorhambury House Estate, St Albans, Herts Suppliers: Keim, Tikkurila, Craig and Rose, Polyvine, Russell & Chapple, Little Greene, Paint and Papers, Brewers A full restoration of a Grade I Neo-Palladian family home, that also welcomes public visitors, required sensitive adaptions to meet strict heritage and conservation standards. Analysis, testing and removal of historic paint layers was undertaken to identify modern alternatives. The work spanned a wide range of areas within this remarkable stately home, ensuring each space was treated with respect and the technical precision it deserved.

Very Highly Commended Campbell Smith & Co Runnymede Air Forces Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham Artistic mural features were repainted to the shrine domes, heraldry shields, and badges around the cloister to a very high standard, while the working area had to be kept to a minimum as visitors come from all over the world to pay their respects. A great credit to all involved.

Wrights Contractors Ltd Boston Hall, High Street, Boston Spa, Wetherby Main supplier: Johnstone's Trade The contractor has done an exceptional job refurbishing a derelict Grade II listed building, previously used as a company head office. The colour scheme and wallpaper choices have been carefully selected to satisfy the householder and the heritage requirements of the local planning department. All-in-all an excellent job.

Highly Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (West) Ltd Royal Crescent Lighting Columns, Royal Crescent, Bath The preparation of the columns required screen and dust control for safety in this highly visited tourist attraction area. The local crest feature and gold leaf ornate details were painted with skill and care. All works carried out under the watchful eye of the Royal Crescent residents.

Commended Ian Williams Ltd 3 The Circus, Bath Decoration of a multi level staircase in a Grade I listed building. The workmanship showed care and skill, including cutting in around plastered features, resulting in a very happy client.

Johns Group Ltd Derby Market Hall, Tenant Street, Derby Main supplier: Dulux Trade A full redecoration to an 1860s Grade II listed market hall. The contractor stripped back several layers of lead based paint to discover the original heritage colours. The finished job highlights the original design features and has rejuvenated a special building.

Cousins Ltd The Beach Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset Main suppliers: Crown Paints, Brewers A major hospital development for 110 beds with modern healthcare facilities over four floors. The client and contractor worked well together to complete this project to a very high standard, under a controlled contract timetable. Some specialist finishes had to be completed within a strict timeline, and dust extraction was imperative.

Very Highly Commended A.C.Beck & Son (Contracts) Ltd Hedsor House Main Staircase Decoration, Taplow, Maidenhead Wallpaper was stripped from the main stairwell ceiling and walls, and then decorated. On completion of the works, the client had artwork applied down the staircase. The wrought iron balustrading was painted and some features were finished in gold leaf, with a senior apprentice undertaking some of this work to upgrade his skill levels. The standard of the gold leaf resulted in the client then requesting further gold leaf to the adjoining gallery balustrading.

Highly Commended Story Decorating Group Ltd Everton Football Club, Hill Dickinson Stadium, Liverpool This a large scale contract to a new football stadium. Many different finishes and applications were required, including reverse paper hanging, floor finishes, non-slip stair nosings, stencilling etc.

Commended J&N Finishes Twelve Trees Park Marketing Suite, London A premier marketing suite delivered for a major development, featuring a variety of wall finishes including high-end, specialist wallpaper installations.

All works were completed to an exceptionally clean, precise, high standard, reflecting the level of craftsmanship required for a flagship sales environment.

Commended Johns Group Ltd Gilbanks at Five St Philips, Birmingham The works comprised the decoration after refurbishment of several areas in a Grade II listed building. This prestigious property is located in Birmingham City Centre and the contractor overcame delivery issues, demonstrating good recycling and repurposing of surplus materials.

After reviewing all the entries and awards given, the Judges selected this contractor as the Supreme Winner. This project includes a wide range of decorative skills all completed to the highest standard.

5 bedroom bespoke house, Totteridge Green A new home designed by the client, where the original contractor went into liquidation mid-contract. Working to an ambitious deadline, a wide range of finishes and products were used to deliver the exact look and performance envisioned, all to a high standard of workmanship. The client expressed exceptional appreciation for the team’s quality, commitment, guidance and support provided throughout the build. A quality job well done.

Highly Commended S&C Painting Services Ltd 84 The Mount, Shrewsbury This is a new build extension to an existing house within a conservation area. The scope of the works included external decoration to match existing Tudor appearance and the whole house was redecorated internally. The finish has been enhanced by the architectural design enabling natural daylight to flood the rooms.

Commended Alizeti Waterhouse Gardens, Cheetham Hill, Manchester The decorator worked as a sub-contractor on a large scale new build accommodation blocks. New innovations were developed to minimise defects and improve quality control.

It has to be noted that spray techniques were used to very good effect on this project.

Commended Cousins Ltd Pinn River SEND School, Fore Street, Pinner A first class job carried out under modern contract conditions, with problems involved, delivering a first class decorating job at a new SEND school. Well done.

Jack Tighe Ltd Barking Barrier Gate 3, London Main supplier: International Paints This industrial repaint project involved a significant number of logistical and technical challenges that needed to be carefully managed. The barrier had to remain fully operational with the ability to be returned to full operational service within six hours of receiving a flood surge notice – anytime, day or night. It was evident that the client and contractor established a strong working relationship, implementing solutions that maintained environmental protection without affecting operations.

Very Highly Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (East Midlands) Ltd Painting of the Victor XL231, Yorkshire Air Museum, York This is a unique project to paint an historic working aircraft from the Cold War period. The contractor worked closely with the client to produce a special finish to a special aeroplane.

Highly Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (North West) Ltd Howley Suspension Bridge, Victoria Park, Warrington

was repainted including new sections to meet modern safety standards, with all the challenges of safely accessing the works.

It must be also mentioned that excellent client services during and after were an aspect that has contributed to this success.

A real credit to the industry and something to be proud of.

A well-deserved award – Well, done.

A challenging scheme to a 1912, Grade II listed suspension bridge structure spanning 55 metres over the River Mersey. The contract involved working with different agencies (Environment Agency and River Authority) to provide a first class finish for the client. The contract was completed within a tight time frame to coincide with the school holidays.

Commended Alliance Painting Ltd JCB, Lowlands Road, Stoke The works comprise the external repainting of metalwork to a huge, ecofriendly warehouse unit. The work was undertaken whilst the building was empty and involved a degree of difficulty working at heights off MEWPs.

EARLY BIRD MEMBER DRAW The winner of the PDA’s Early Bird membership prize draw for this year has been announced as G Borg High Class Painting & Decorating from Ashton-under-Lyne, who were automatically entered after paying their membership fee in full at the start of the year.

George Borg works alongside his sons Lewis and Aaron, saying, “We’ve been with the PDA for at least 10 years, and it was great that we were picked out of the draw for paying our fee for the year upfront. It’s a nice feeling when you win something and the spray machine will be very useful.”

Eastern Procurement has a specific procurement framework for the East of England which requires contractors to hold accreditations, including membership of the PDA. Leigh-Anne said, “The session was really enjoyable with lots of questions and engagement from PDA members. We spent time talking through what the changes actually mean in practical terms and answering the honest questions people often hesitate to ask. If we can help suppliers understand the opportunities available and feel more confident navigating the process, then that is a positive step forward.”

Key questions put forward by PDA members included: • How can SMEs and sole traders find out about smaller projects locally?

• Does the 30-day payment rule apply to sub-contractors and even sub-sub-contractors?

• Does everything need to go to tender?

• Do we need to pay for additional insurances or accreditations before we’ve even won the work?

DEALING WITH DISMISSAL NEW GUIDANCE FOR EMPLOYERS

Changes to regulations on unfair dismissal come into force on 1 January 2027.

What does this mean for employers?

EMPLOYEES IN GREAT Britain currently gain ordinary unfair dismissal rights after completing two years’ continuous employment. At this point, they can bring an unfair dismissal claim in an employment tribunal if they believe their dismissal was unfair.

Employers must show a fair reason for dismissal, such as conduct, capability or redundancy, and follow a fair process. However, no minimum qualifying service is required to bring a discrimination claim, or an unfair dismissal claim, where the dismissal is for an automatically unfair reason, and the law is not changing in that regard.

If an unfair dismissal claim succeeds, the employee may receive a basic award, calculated in a similar way to a statutory redundancy payment, in addition to a compensatory award which is mainly based on the employee’s financial losses resulting from the dismissal.

Until 1 January 2027, the compensatory award is capped at the lower of one year’s pay or the statutory limit which is currently £123,543 in Great Britain.

What is changing?

New Regulations from 1 January 2027 will apply where the date the employment contract terminates falls on or after 1 January 2027. Employers should note that the date of termination is at the end of any notice period given.

These changes apply in Great Britain to: 1. Reduce the qualifying period of employment for bringing an unfair dismissal claim down to six months.

2. Remove all limits on the compensatory award for successful unfair dismissal employment tribunal claims, ie. the compensatory award will be uncapped.

3. Remove the power to vary the unfair dismissal qualifying period by regulations, thereby requiring primary legislation for any further amendments to the period.

notice period, may fall after the employee has acquired unfair dismissal rights. Employers must still follow a fair process where dismissal is being considered, especially where discrimination, whistleblowing, pregnancy or family leave, health issues that may amount to a disability, or other automatically unfair reasons may be relevant. Do not wait until the end of the probationary period to identify or address underperformance.

Stick to the ‘rule book’ What should employers do?

New employees who began employment on 2 July 2026 will reach six months’ service on 1 January 2027, meaning they will qualify for ordinary unfair dismissal protection from the date the new rules take effect on 1 January 2027.

Employers should therefore manage probationary periods carefully for new starters, especially from July 2026 onwards, and for any employees who will have six months’ or more service from 1 January 2027.

While there is no legal requirement to include a probationary period in an employment contract, the purpose of a probationary period is to provide a suitable amount of time in which the employer can assess the employee’s suitability for the employment.

As a cautious approach, employers may wish to limit the standard probationary period for new hires from July 2026 to three months, with any extension limited to one further month, or at most two further months.

Employers should only use longer probationary periods, including any extension, where there is a clear reason, such as where more time is needed to assess performance or where the employee has been absent from work.

This is because any dismissal which takes effect at or near the end of probation, including at the end of any

Employers must follow the Acas Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures for employees with to reduce the risk of unfair dismissal claims.

Where the employer is dismissing a ‘short-serving employee’ and is confident that the employee is unlikely to bring any claim which does not require qualifying service, such as automatic unfair dismissal or discrimination, it may decide not to follow the full Acas disciplinary or grievance process when dismissing with notice at the end of probation. However, employers should first check whether any contractual disciplinary or capability procedure applies during probation, as failing to follow it could lead to a breach of contract claim.

In practice, an employee is less likely to bring a claim if they feel that they have been treated fairly. Fair treatment is likely to involve regular communication and feedback from their manager, as well as progress updates throughout the probationary period. It is very important to document these discussions, usually by providing a summary to the employee in writing of what has been discussed and agreed.

Review employment contracts, probation policies and handbooks for new starters, particularly where they allow for longer probationary periods. Managers should also understand when to address performance or conduct concerns before the six-month point, and what is involved from January 2027 onwards.

STATUTORY SICK PAY RULES GUIDE UPDATED NEW STATUTORY SICK Pay (SSP) rules in force since April 2026 introduced important changes to how SSP is calculated, when it’s paid, and who is eligible. For employers, this may already be affecting sickness absence procedures and record-keeping, contractual sick pay schemes, fit note processes, and how they manage short and long-term absence.

Understanding these changes, and checking that existing policies reflect the new rules, is essential so you can protect your business and support your employees appropriately.

BAGNALLS CHAMPION NEW PAINT RECYCLING SCHEME ALFRED BAGNALL & SONS is officially taking part in industry-led national product stewardship scheme, PaintCare, which we covered in our Spring issue.

Developed by the British Coatings Federation (BCF), with support from leading industry organisations, PaintCare’s aim is to establish a circular economy for leftover decorative paints and packaging, as well as supporting social enterprises that specialise in paint reuse.

Currently, a huge 98% of leftover paint is sent to landfill, incinerated or poured down the drain. PaintCare is on a mission to recycle, reuse or re-manufacture 75% of this leftover paint and achieve a 42% recycling rate for paint packaging by 2032.

With quality funding from UK paint manufacturers, PaintCare is able to cover all costs of transporting, sorting and recycling leftover paint to prevent it heading straight for landfill.

Director of PaintCare Ltd, Dr Steve Snaith, commented, “The PaintCare trial will help us understand how best to collect, re-manufacture and recycle this valuable material to support a more circular future for decorative paint.”

With numerous paint drop-off points popping up at decorating centres and paint retailers, the scheme is

currently undergoing a trial in the West Midland area, allowing members of the public to hand over their leftover paint, completely free of charge. Collections of the paint itself will be managed by Biffa for the duration of the trial, ensuring the smooth running of the scheme.

PaintCare’s official launch took place at the House of Commons, during a Parliamentary Reception, where representatives from the scheme spoke alongside BCF members and MPs. Bagnalls was also amongst those in attendance, pledging to support the scheme through its Midlands branch, located in Wolverhampton.

Ben Featherstone, Sustainability and Compliance Manager at Bagnalls, said, “We always welcome innovation that improves our ways of working, so supporting PaintCare and the BCF was an absolute nobrainer for us. This industry-led, innovative circular economy scheme aligns directly with our values, protecting our planet by reducing carbon emissions, preventing excessive waste and supporting local enterprises with donations of reusable and re-manufactured paint.

“We’re excited to see how PaintCare develops in the future and more than happy to support the trial, in the hope of growing the scheme towards a national launch.”

Joanne Gualda, Director at Bagnalls, added, “I have been in the industry for many years and have pushed for change within Bagnalls and within the industry as a whole. We’re always committed to adopting new ways of working so that we can drive for a greener future.

Thanks to the involvement of Bagnalls, PaintCare now has access to accurate data from a national contractor, which aids understanding of paint volumes with a view to a potential nationwide rollout of the scheme.

Dr Snaith commented, “The support from Bagnalls is key to us developing a model that we can scale up and use to create an accessible national scheme. The insight Bagnalls is able to provide will help us achieve our ambition to increase paint reuse, recycling and re-manufacture rates to 75% by 2030.”

MAJOR NVQ INVESTMENT BOOSTS WORKFORCE IAN WILLIAMS HAS delivered a significant training programme, supporting more than 20% of its 1,450-strong directly employed workforce to achieve formal NVQ qualifications across all operational roles.

As building regulations evolve, the company continues to invest in its people to ensure it remains ahead of compliance requirements. This includes the Building Safety Act 2022, which places greater emphasis on demonstrating Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) through measurable standards of competence.

300 people, including operatives, forepeople, supervisors, site managers and contracts managers, have successfully completed an NVQ level qualification with achievements ranging from a Level 2 NVQ in their trade through to Level 7 NVQs in either Construction Contracting Operations Management (Construction), or Construction Site Management (Construction) – Building and Civil Engineering.

The Building Safety Act, alongside changes to CSCS card requirements, is increasing the focus on contractors to evidence workforce competence. Ian Williams’ latest programme builds on its already highly skilled workforce, further strengthening compliance assurance and raising standards within the industry.

Ian Williams’ People Development Manager, Claire Elston, comments, “Continuous professional development is central to how we operate, it’s been a mainstay of the business for 80 years. Many of our site colleagues start their careers with us through a formal apprenticeship via the Ian Williams Academy. We also enjoy an average service of 8+years, with many of our older colleagues having taken advantage of the earlier grandfather rights to obtain their CSCS cards over formal NVQ qualifications.

“Due to the size of our direct delivery workforce and the wide range of skills in the team, it was a huge undertaking by the company, driven by the Academy team, who work with everyone across the business to support their training and development needs.”

As part of its long-term commitment to skills development, Ian Williams continues to invest in future talent through its apprenticeship and early careers programmes. The company has a strategic target for apprentices to represent 10% of its workforce, regularly exceeding this at around 14%, significantly above the industry average of approximately 5%.

Last year, 43 apprentices joined the business, with further opportunities planned in the 2026 recruitment programme. In addition, 17 individuals were recruited onto the company’s Trainee Surveyor programme, a 3-4 year, in-house designed scheme that has produced future managers, general managers and directors.

PIONEERS With cycling her preferred mode of transport, and a talent for reusing, recycling and upcycling, Jessica Walters has found multiple ways to support the principles of the Painting and Decorating Association’s Paint Green scheme.

A SELF-TITLED female Stig of the Dump with a life-long aversion to waste, Jess launched her painting career five years ago, specialising in exterior restoration because she loves architecture, working outside, and making things beautiful again.

When the PDA launched its landmark Paint Green scheme in 2023, Jess was among the first to sign up, bringing her own unique vision to embedding sustainable principles into her day-to-day on-site working practices.

Waste not, want not “I hate waste,” says Jess, “I just can’t throw anything away. If there’s a possibility it could still be used for something, I’m saving it! So when the PDA launched the Paint Green initiative, I was immediately on board.

“My incentive is to get restoration work locally so I can cycle or walk to work. I give an attractive discount to local clients, so I don't have to make daily journeys in the car.

“It’s a win-win for me and my clients... I’m never late, fuel costs are kept low, no parking fees or parking tickets! And my mental health is positive... I’m happier and healthier.

“Yes, I lose a bit on my financial profit, but I get to work in my neighbourhood, word of mouth spreads making me busy, and clients love that I’m local as it builds trust. It also allows me to reduce my carbon footprint while supporting a more sustainable, community-based way of working.”

Share and save As well as finding innovative ways to reuse items others might consider fit for the bin, Jess actively engages her clients in conversations about waste and offers them a Paint Green Saving Scheme if they choose coatings she

already has in stock, including specialist fillers and resins that are often costly.

“The majority of my work is external, and there are certain colours like black for downpipes, or white for mouldings and door surrounds, which are extremely popular.

“Instead of charging the client the price of a full tin, I charge them for the amount I use and leave a small jar or pot with just enough for touch-ups.”

“For me, working this way is fulfilling. I love the thrill of finding exactly the right scrap of something I have recycled or reused that just finishes off a job beautifully, or being able to take on a project knowing that the client isn’t going to be left with another tin of slowly hardening paint to add to their collection.”

A sharing of ideas As well as finding myriad ways to reuse items, Jess also promotes the use of low-VOC and specialist exterior water-based paints to her clients, alongside sharing her passion for durability and longevity when working on their houses.

“My work is always collaborative. I spend time understanding what a client wants to achieve emotionally as well as visually.

“A Victorian terrace restoration stands out to me, where the client moved away from standard white and returned to a Portland stone palette, contrasted with blue-grey juniper ash woodwork.

“The result felt authentic to the building’s heritage while still personal to the owners. Being part of that process, and leaving a lasting mark, puts a smile on my face.”

Beyond business Jess is also a member of the Archway Upcycle Group (AUG), a volunteer-led community initiative that offers free space to upcycle and encourages people to repurpose discarded items into functional and artistic products.

“While I happily think of myself as a bit of a ‘Stig of the Dump’, collecting bits from here and there. I don’t have piles of stuff accumulating everywhere, because I get so much pleasure when I can repurpose it, and that’s what drives me.

“I would 100% recommend that PDA members join the Paint Green scheme. It’s opened up new opportunities and allowed me to look at my business and do things in a completely new way.

“It’s not just about the environment, it’s about the conversations you can have with your clients about all the ways you’re working to be less wasteful...

Surely everybody hates waste?”

Launched in November 2022, the Paint Green campaign is a sustainability initiative which encourages PDA members to commit to drive down waste paint and paint containers, those who take the Paint Green pledge can display the Paint Green logo on their online platforms, stationery and vehicles. The initiative aims to dovetail with existing paint and container reuse and recycle schemes and help customers identify painters and decorators who are committed to protecting the planet.

UK’S TOP APPRENTICES GATHER FOR BATTLE OF THE BRUSHES AT DONCASTER PAINTING AND DECORATING apprentices from across the UK have been battling it out over the past four months for the title of PDA Apprentice of the Year 2026.

Year on year the competition continues to evolve, and 2026 is no exception. We are proud to boast that we now include every region of the UK: Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in addition to the North, Midlands and Southern regions of England.

With the arrival the new Level 3 Painting & Decorating qualification, we created a Senior Plus category to cater for those now working at that level, otherwise they would have been excluded as their skill levels would have exceeded the requirements for the existing Junior and Senior categories.

Each stage of the competition involves a gruelling six-hour challenge incorporating intricate designs that require precise setting out and scaling up of detailed drawings. Apprentices are then tasked with using a range of techniques including freehand cutting in of curves, circles and straight lines, making and applying a stencil and creating broken colour effects such as rag-rolling and sponging.

Junior category

A total of 92 apprentices took part overall, across all the heats our competitors excelled in enthusiasm and craft competence. Though there inevitably has to be a category runner-up and winner we acknowledge that all our entrants are winner in their own right.

Thank you to all trainees and apprentices who attended the regional heats. You have contributed to the success of this 2026 edition of the competition. You have all demonstrated the level of craft skills that the industry requires for its future sustainability.

Feeling the heat Starting back in February at Workforce Training Services in Belfast, 11 apprentices took part, including Charlie Montgomery from Carrickfergus who returned in the Senior Plus category, having been the first entrant from Northern Ireland to participate in the competition, travelling to Birmingham as a Junior in 2023 and again as a Senior last year.

The event was competently managed by craft teacher Sandra McMurran who has been at the forefront of bringing our event to the North of Ireland.

Senior category

The second heat took place at City of Glasgow College, the judges were thrilled to see 23 apprentice painters and decorators from colleges across Scotland gather at the college for the competition’s fourth Scottish regional heat.

There is always an enthusiastic welcome here from staff and management for the PDA team and the competitors. This centre regularly attracts significant competitor numbers and always provides quality work resources that ensure the day’s event runs smoothly.

In another college centre first, the modern, bright learning environment of Merthyr Tydfil College, South Wales, hosted 10 apprentices. The college provides a well-resourced opportunity to make this day a positive success. The competition work panels were well positioned giving our competitors every opportunity to demonstrate their craft skills. Lewis Jones and his team managed competently, ensuring all provision and hospitality was generous to all.

City College in Plymouth, another first time venue, provided a spacious and bright competition location for 12 competitors. Resources and work areas gave every

South and City College Birmingham, as in previous years, once again presented excellent facilities and technical support from Micha, with effective management from Mark Morris. This established centre offers great offthe-job support and full-time learner training, an excellent framework for our 10 apprentices.

The final heat of the competition took place at yet another first-time location. Preston College invited us to use their training facility and resources with assistance from Phil Burgess and technician Leo. An impressive 20 competitors took advantage of this trade ready workspace, appropriately setup for the demands of the competition criteria.

The grand final The 17 highest scorers from the regional heats all travelled to Doncaster for the Grand Final of the competition, where they faced a new design to complete.

The finals heat has been held at Doncaster College now for five consecutive years. The facilities and layout of the workshop providing excellent opportunities for our regional winners to reinforce their skills and contest with their peers.

Managed and organised by Glen Galbraith with tech support from Reiss Hewitt, our finalists reinforced the skills level competence that brought them to this finals event.

Andrew Davis of the Association of Painting Craft Teachers is competition judge, alongside PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie.

Neil said, “2026 has been a landmark year for our Apprentice of the Year competition. We’ve held a regional heat in Belfast for the first time, ensuring that the opportunity to take part is extended to apprentices in all home nations across the UK. The calibre of work the apprentices have completed throughout has been outstanding and we have been impressed by the talent, professionalism and skill on display.

“So many of these apprentices return year after year in a bid to claim the title and it is fantastic to see them grow in confidence and develop the abilities and attributes required for a career in colour.”

The competition is sponsored by Purdy Professional Painting Tools, and each participant was presented with a set of Purdy paint brushes. As main sponsor of the PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards, Brewers Decorator Centres supplied paint and materials for the contest and provided a goody bag for all those taking part.

APPRENTICES TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT NEC FOUR APPRENTICES HAVE completed a three-day challenge at the PDA Skills Hub as part of the Painting and Decorating Show at the NEC. The PDA invited four apprentices, all of whom have competed in our Apprentice of the Year competition, to replicate specifications from the contest in front of a live audience at the show.

Charlie Montgomery from MCN Painting Contracts, Courtney Irwin and Joe Deas from Bagnalls, and Romilly Oliver from Scott Oliver Decorating took part in the Skills Hub, recreating their work for delegates at the event.

PDA Chief Executive Neil Ogilvie said, “Under competition conditions, apprentices are in a closed space where they take on a time-limited challenge to scale-up and map out a complex design, which requires precise freehand cutting in and specific decorative effects.

“At the Painting and Decorating Show, they were presented with the same task, but in an environment where visitors were able to see their progress and engage with them.

RECORD SUCCESS AT SKILLBUILD LEEDS COLLEGE OF Building (LCB) students delivered one of the college's strongest-ever performances at the regional heats of SkillBuild 2026, the UK's largest construction skills competition for trainees and apprentices.

Delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board, SkillBuild is a series of regional competitions held across the UK for 12 trade specialisms, testing technical skills, technique, character, professionalism, and the ability to perform under pressure.

LCB hosted one of the regional heats at its South Bank and North Street Campuses on 2 June. Of the 78 competitors, LCB students took 13 of the top 27 spots up for grabs. In total, more than 1,100 competitors from 223 organisations entered SkillBuild 2026 across the UK. Mark Sims, LCB SkillBuild Coordinator, said, “We are so proud that so many of our students took part in SkillBuild this year, with 13 placing first, second, or third in their respective trades. All our entrants demonstrated exceptional commitment and professionalism, and we were very proud of every one of them. These results are testament to the dedication, hard work, and commitment of our learners and the amazing staff supporting them.”

LCB’s winners now await the judges’ decision on qualification for the national final. The eight top-ranked competitors from across all the regional heats will be selected to battle it out at Stadium MK in Milton Keynes from 17 to 19 November.

FROM A MINNEAPOLIS GARAGE TO A GLOBAL MANUFACTURER A CENTURY AGO, in the depths of a Minnesota winter, a downtown Minneapolis parking lot attendant named Russell Gray grew fed up with grease guns that froze, failed, and injured workers while servicing cars.

PAINTER OF THE YEAR 2025 WINNERS ANNOUNCED JOHNSTONE’S PAINT HAS unveiled the Supreme Winner at the 42nd annual Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards. Voted for on the night by fellow attendees, Lee Burns Decorators Ltd was awarded the prestigious title as their second win of the night, after they took home the Residential category award for the outstanding work on Matheson Church, Dunoon.

The historic project required highly skilled, intricate work as the team completely transformed the church's 172-year-old interior into a bright, modern private residence. The team had to carefully work around striking original features, including a large stained-glass window that dates back to 1867. Also uncovered and brought back to life during the project were the original exposed timber ceiling beams that had been hidden under years of paint layers.

To restore the Victorian-era building and protect it for years to come the team used a variety of Johnstone’s Trade products, including Aqua Guard Primer Undercoat, Aqua Guard Durable Satin, Perfect Matt and Woodworks Quick Dry Polyurethane Varnish.

CONSTRUCTION WORKFORCE OUTLOOK THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Training Board has recently published its Construction Workforce Outlook 2026-30. The annual report sets out expected construction demand over the next five years and the implications for the construction workforce.

The Outlook shows growth is expected to return to the industry over the medium-term, but that it continues to face ongoing pressures in recruiting and retaining the workforce it needs. The short-term picture for construction is challenging, with uncertainty and cost pressures affecting activity.

Meeting future demand will require sustained focus on recruitment, training and supporting people into construction jobs. This will require collaboration across industry, stakeholders and Government to meet the demands of the workforce.

Too few people are entering the sector, too many experienced workers are leaving, and productivity improvements have not been sufficient to close the gap. This will increasingly put a strain on the industry’s capacity to deliver on housing, infrastructure and retrofit commitments. However, recent initiatives, such as the government’s £600m investment to support construction training and alongside additional funding such as the Youth Guarantee and Jobs Guarantee to help younger people into work, demonstrate a willingness to support the industry.

BRADITE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS BRADITE ONE CAN has become the go-to finish for the team at Snowdon Mountain Railway, thanks to its quick-drying, highly durable formulation.

The iconic attraction is the UK’s only public rack-and-pinion mountain railway. First built in 1895, it has been welcoming visitors for 130 years, offering a unique and accessible way to experience the landscapes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and Eryri National Park.

Where cladding shows signs of contamination such as algae, mould or mildew, this must be addressed prior to any coating application. A professional-grade fungicidal wash, such as a mould and mildew cleaner with active biocides, is typically recommended to kill spores and inhibit regrowth.

Best practice involves applying the cleaner evenly by brush or roller, allowing sufficient dwell time (often up to 24 hours) to maximise effectiveness, followed by a thorough rinse. Adequate drying time is essential before moving to the next stage.

Restore weathered wood

Grey, UV-damaged timber doesn’t necessarily need replacing, restoration products based on oxalic acid like Barrettine’s Wood Reviver, can effectively remove the degraded surface layer, revealing the original tone of the wood beneath. For trade use, these products are applied liberally along the grain and kept damp during application to ensure even activation. After 15-30 minutes, the surface is agitated with a stiff, non-metallic brush before rinsing clean.

The result is a visibly revived substrate, ready for protection.

Treat before you protect

Preservative protection

Once the timber is clean and dry, a high-quality preservative primer forms the foundation of any long-term system. Typically oil or spirit-based like Barrettine’s Universal ‘Primer’ Preserver, penetrates deeply into the timber, protecting against fungal decay and insect attack.

Application usually involves 2-3 thin coats, allowing adequate drying time between each. This stage is critical for extending the service life of the cladding and should not be overlooked, particularly on new installations or exposed elevations.

UV and weather defence

The final stage is the application of a high-performance UV protection oil, like Armourflex Ultimate UV Protection Oil. This premium cladding oil works by dispersing UV radiation as heat, slowing the degradation process that leads to greying. At the same time, it provides a hydrophobic, water-repellent barrier, reducing moisture ingress. A microporous finish allows the timber to breathe, preventing issues such as peeling, blistering or cracking that are often seen with film-forming coatings. A generous first coat saturates the timber, followed by 2-3 lighter coats are sufficient, with drying times of a few hours between applications.
