WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER The last 18 months have been, by any measure, been a hugely successful time for Caterham and our global community. We started the 2023/24 academic year named as the Times Educational Supplement (Tes) Independent Senior School of the Year, and ended with Caterham Prep School shortlisted as Tes Independent Prep School of the Year, the only such Prep School across London and South East to achieve this.

T

hese two external accolades reflect the journey the school has been on over recent years with the support of our global community. We are an ambitious school with a sense of purpose reaching well beyond our campus. We have a mission beyond simply getting top grades for our pupils – we are a community making an important contribution to the conversation about the role, relevance and ambition of education and educators in the 21st century. This mission spans every area of education with a growing expertise in digital and innovation in education. Many schools in the UK and beyond are now learning how to integrate digital and AI to positive affect through our work at Caterham, and through our Ed Tech start up Sphinx AI. Caterham was recently was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate as part of their three-year cycle of school inspections. The new framework has removed the previously used single word judgements and instead concentrates on speaking to pupils to assess a school’s culture.

I am delighted to confirm that Caterham not only passed the Inspection with flying colours but in addition we are, at the time of writing, the only through school in the country to receive three Key Areas of Strength. The senior school was recognised for the quality of lessons and the quality of pastoral care and the Prep School received an area of significant strength for its

use of Digital and Innovation in the classroom.

My favourite line in the report was that pupils at Caterham are encouraged to be their true authentic selves. I can think of no better praise – and it is this culture that promotes such high levels of pupil happiness and engagement and, as a consequence, such high levels of pupil achievement.

As evidenced in this edition of Omnia, Caterhamians take their achievement and ambition well beyond their time in the Harestone Valley.

Caterham School has always been a school that encourages pupils to go out into the world to achieve and make a difference and I am delighted that our global community continues to share these values. I am also grateful that so many of you are actively supporting the school in so many ways – thank you for the significant difference you make to young lives.

This edition also conveys the buzzing global community with Caterham at its centre. In addition to the well-established programme of events in London and at School, we have held successful Insight Evenings and gatherings across our global community, in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

I look forward to continuing to connect with Caterhamians, and welcome you to one of the many CaterhamConnected, Old Caterhamian and Parents Association events in a busy annual calendar.

WELCOME FROM THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Welcome to Omnia from your alumni community – a community which spans a wide range of age, experience, professions and locations across the globe – but all with a shared root in the heart of Caterham School.

The Caterham School Parents Association (PA) has three objectives – organising fundraising activities, fostering community, and supporting school projects. In 2023/24 we focused on the last one, having built up quite a fundraising surplus in the years since lockdown; whilst also continuing with the other two projects.

It is a privilege to become your OCA President with the baton passed from former president David Kinnear.

My thanks to David for his infectious enthusiasm for all things Caterham, and I look forward to supporting and connecting Old and current Caterhamians through a busy calendar of events and activity.

I am particularly proud of the OCA’s work connecting and supporting Sixth Form pupils and Old Cats heading out into their professional careers with our ‘living library’ of professional experience through the CaterhamConnected.co.uk platform. If you haven’t already done so, do sign up and share your invaluable experience with young people eager to gain sage advice across sectors and professions.

We are always keen to hear from OCs and OEs who would like to join the OCA Committee. We worked with the school team to identify several projects that the Parents’ Association could support including: • A portable Planetarium, with branded cover, enabling the whole school to benefit from immersive experienced based learning. It will also be added to the Resource Library to be lent to our partnership schools.

• A yurt for outdoor learning for the Prep School.

• Games tables, including world map quizzes, chess and snakes and ladders.

• Additional car kits for both Prep and Senior school clubs.

• Mountain bikes and kit for a new initiative for the Senior School.

• Kit for a Quiet Space/Multi-faith space for the Senior School.

• A Wellbeing Tree for the Pre-Prep entrance hall to add a touch of magic to the space, providing a cosy seating area as well as an enchanting welcome to the school.

Our newly nominated charity partner for the year was Holding On Letting Go, a local charity supporting children who have lost someone close to them. Our aim was to be able to support one of the charity’s retreat weekends.

Sal’s Shoes and the 1811 continue to be supported by the PA, with termly collections now in place for the former and donations to the latter. We have also supported The Hygiene Bank this year with termly collections.

The combined Nearly New Uniform and Lost Property office at Beech Hanger is continuing to be a success. The shop is a thriving benefit to the school community, ensuring uniform is recycled. Earlier this year we worked with Sal’s Shoes to distribute all the old-style kit, from both Prep and Senior Schools, overseas and it was fabulous to see the smiling faces of the new recipients. Lost Property is efficiently ensuring all named kit is returned to its owners – with those not wanting to brave the climb to the new office receiving their items at house assembly each Friday!

The PA social life at Caterham continues to grow with termly events organised for all parents. We have hosted coffee mornings every term to introduce new parents and show them everything we can offer; a Christmas Afternoon Tea; a welcome Cocktail Evening; and our annual Pimms Night.

Fundraising events have included our stalls at the Fireworks Night and a Fawlty Towers Dinner. The Summer Ball at the close of the last year was a wonderful Midsummer theme evening and wonderful way to gather together as well as celebrate our Upper Sixth Form leavers as they moved up from Caterham School.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us across our time as chairs, and we look forward to another year of Caterham magic as we hand over to new PA Chairs Gisela Slowinski and Sam Cliff and the Committee.

Mary was interested in Jon’s advice for young lawyers and the impact that technology is having on the legal sector.

Can you give us an overview of your role at Marshall Wace?

Marshall Wace is an alternative asset manager, otherwise known as a hedge fund manager, founded in 1997. London is our main office with others in New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai. We run about $60 billion of assets, for primarily institutional and professional clients with a focus on equities but increasingly looking at other asset classes. Our main objective is to run funds which generate absolute returns whatever happens in the markets. We try and make money in any conditions which is the attraction of this asset class for clients.

I joined in 2005 as the firm’s sole lawyer. Since then, my role has changed a lot. I have taken on compliance, and now run a team across our London, New York and Hong Kong offices.

It’s an in-house legal role, which means a huge variety of work, different issues and questions every day. I’m never sure what will be on my desk or on my phone and having offices in all three regions I have the advantage, or disadvantage, of never being entirely disconnected from what’s going on. I focus on all aspects of the legal interactions that affect the firm, the group and the funds we manage. That includes setting up new funds, matters relating to the partnership so corporate law and partnership law. There can be tax issues, regulatory questions, HR questions, intellectual property, data protection and charitable matters relating to our philanthropic ventures. We also look at emerging areas of law, for example the hot topic of AI. 

Compliance relates to our being a regulated firm and complying with the regulators in the jurisdictions we operate in. They all have their own rule books.

The role of compliance is to ensure that we are apprised of the rules that affect us, have testing in place, training for staff, that we are not in breach and are doing the right thing at all times. There’s a lot to keep our hands around.

It’s an interesting role and I have really enjoyed my 19 years here.

The most significant recent challenge, and there have been a few, was Brexit.

Law can be difficult to get into. Did you face any challenges at the beginning of your career?

I never actually wanted to be a lawyer! I left Caterham full of ambition to become a university academic. I went to Cambridge and read Anglo Saxon, Norse & Celtic. I did that for two years and then reassessed the career I wanted. As much as I loved the environment, academia was not where I saw myself.

I’d always enjoyed politics and debating and that advocacy interest had an overlap with law. I also had friends studying law and could see what they were doing. I got involved in moots and was able to change course to law in my third year. I applied for student vacation schemes and was lucky to get onto one at Simmons & Simmons.

At the end of that scheme, I was offered a training contract before I went to law school. It all fell into place, I was extremely fortunate. It is challenging now; the number of training contract places are few and the number of law graduates are many.

Did you always have it in your mind that you wanted to go in-house?

In short, ‘no’. I started at law firm Simmons & Simmons in 1999, qualifying two years later. I thought private practice was interesting and could foresee a long career in it.

You get to a point in private practice when you have to decide are you gunning for partnership and enjoying interaction with multiple clients or do you want something that’s closer to a commercial arrangement advising one business where you are more invested.

It was commercial exposure, the interaction with a single client and seeing how the benefit of my advice and involvement could affect the performance of that client that was one of the big appeals to me to come in-house. It was less of a push and more the pull for me, the attraction of going into an environment where I felt I could make more of a difference and I could be involved with a business I could see grow and hopefully succeed.

What are the skills and qualities one needs to succeed in a career in law?

Hard work is important, adaptability, being a good listener. Being naturally enthusiastic, which applies to any career where, as a graduate, you need to make an impact and impress the people around you. More than ever adaptability is important as the rate of change is enormous. For example, the impact that emerging technologies are having.

What have been significant career challenges you have faced and how have these been overcome?

The most significant recent challenge, and there have been a few, was Brexit.

We have a number of investment funds which are domiciled in Ireland which is fairly unusual. We came to Ireland over ten years ago, so we had EU funds. There were certain requirements about EU funds having an EU investment manager and of course upon Brexit we were no longer in the EU. We had a perfect structure until Brexit and then we didn’t.

I led an internal working group to put in place a contingency plan to allow us to work seamlessly despite Brexit. That involved establishing an entity in Ireland.

Close to the eleventh-hour negotiations there were concessions and clarifications from the EU which meant that we didn’t need this EU management company set up.

We were able to unwind that structure

but we had done a lot of work to make sure that the business was able to operate lawfully. That was a significant exercise and challenge, but we met and solved it.

In fact, Brexit hasn’t had much of an impact despite the difficulties at the time.

Can you share the rewarding aspects of your role?

I’ve hugely enjoyed being able to hire really good people. The training and mentoring of those members of my team and seeing them grow and develop into talented lawyers and compliance officers, by their own efforts, has been really rewarding.

I never actually wanted to be a lawyer! I left Caterham full of ambition to become a university academic.

Can you share any other achievements from your career so far?

The way I’ve supported the business and how we’ve grown. How we have introduced new products and been very innovative in new areas for example, the ability to invest in digital assets and crypto and convincing the regulator in Ireland to have the flexibility to do that.

Being involved in significant restructuring projects we have done at the corporate level and in our funds. The most rewarding thing has been the management of my team.

So you enjoy being a mentor and helping the younger generation become great lawyers as well?

Yes, I certainly do what I can to help.

Obviously, it’s down to them and their talent as to whether they succeed but it’s good to play a small part in that.

Are there any particular mentors who had significant impact on your career?

My first boss when I was a trainee solicitor at Simmons & Simmons was a significant mentor. As a trainee solicitor you do four ‘seats’, working in different departments for six months at a time and then you decide which department you want to qualify in. My first seat was in financial services which is where I ended up making my career. My boss there was an encouraging and generous mentor, investing a lot of his time helping me to understand what he and the department did. We still keep in touch.

Would you say we should take advantage of the lawyers we’ve met and potential mentors in our lives as early as we can?

The earlier the better but it’s not the end of the world if that doesn’t happen. What matters is that you find a mentor who can invest time and thought, who cares and is willing to help you on your career journey. Some people come to law later.

If you can find someone as I did when you’re in your mid-twenties that’s great but as long as you find someone who helps, has an interest and can advise and steer you that’s really valuable. It’s good to see how much mentoring there is now. We run mentoring programmes in my firm with senior people really helping younger people get established. That investment of time and effort is rewarding for the mentor and valuable for the mentee. I know many businesses are now doing this and it’s to be encouraged, the more the better.

What advice would you have for those starting out at university on developing skills to network efficiently and establish professional relationships with lawyers?

If there’s the ability through CaterhamConnected to connect with individuals in the law and who are willing to act as a mentor that’s terrific.

Once you have started in your career use the opportunity to network by going to events with senior partners or others in your department. Also get actively involved in industry wide events as a speaker or assisting a speaker. Being proactive is the key. Don’t expect things to come to you, go out there and get it for yourself, people really notice that.

Be enthusiastic, ask good questions, be inquisitive, interested, and keen to learn and do more. It can be hard work, but it pays off. Making that good impression at an early stage is hugely valuable.

How about advice for students still at Caterham, is there anything they can do to network?

Many law firms still offer work experience based on merit and there are many opportunities to get involved.

Once at university really try to get a vacation scheme, at a firm in or outside of London. They are super competitive but if you can get on them that’s great.

Mini pupillage is another route, for those wanting to be barristers. Keep applying and be thoughtful in your applications, demonstrating that you know about the firm’s areas of practice.

It’s interesting that you also did pupillages. What made you decide that you wanted to take the solicitor and not the barrister route?

It was partly just how things worked out.

I did two mini pupillages at around the same time as my Simmons & Simmons vacation scheme and then I got offered the training contract there. I had really enjoyed the scheme, the work, the people and the social aspect, everything about 

it and could see myself doing that role.

I think the bar is a very rewarding branch of the legal profession. If you are eloquent, enjoy advocacy and debating, huge variety and thinking on your feet to represent your client, it can be very exciting and rewarding.

How has the global nature of your work impacted your perspective and understanding of legal systems and practices around the world?

Legal systems do vary but there are similarities and overlap. The language of contracts is pretty international. In regulatory terms there are all manner of regulations, they are specific and sometimes peculiar, and you just have to deal with them, whether they are in the UK or elsewhere. It is crucial when you are looking at a difficult question that you know which legal advisors to call on. We have a whole slate of law firms in different jurisdictions that we use whenever needed.

It is also important that as an internal lawyer you understand the basic principles, know what questions to ask, how to challenge the advice you are getting and can translate it into a language that the business understands. Being an English, Australian or American qualified lawyer in an international business doesn’t really matter even though your knowledge and expertise is limited to one jurisdiction, if you have people around you who have qualifications in other jurisdictions and the ability to use external lawyers.

There’s a scoping phase where everyone’s trying to understand what AI can do. Everyone knows it can do quite a lot but no one’s sure what that is. No one wants to be in a position where they’ve missed the boat or come to it late in the day.

Do you enjoy the global nature of your job? Would you consider moving to an in-house job where it’s just UK?

Global roles can be frustrating due to the volume of regulatory systems and keeping on top of new rules and proposals, sometimes introduced at very short notice. The team’s role is to help with that and the law firms we work with also proactively keep us informed so we are generally ahead of the curve.

It’s interesting, if our work was all UK based it would be a lot simpler but I’m not sure it would be as fun.

What are other emerging trends in the legal industry that young professionals should be aware of?

How do you see growing technological progress, especially AI impacting legal careers?

Chat GPT, Open AI and large language models etc. is a fascinating area. There’s a bubble around it and fear of missing out.

lot but no one’s sure what that is. No one wants to be in a position where they’ve missed the boat or come to it late in the day. We’re looking at it in our business more generally and in different use cases to determine how it can help.

There are concerns and challenges around this technology, for example, data protection, confidentiality, public information, and copyright. If those are overcome it could be a useful tool. I think the same is true within the legal and compliance teams. If one takes for example the sheer volume of information we receive and need to ingest and summarise every week there’s probably scope for an AI module to help. There’s also scope for AI to help with some first draft contracts and communications.

I don’t see AI at this stage replacing anyone, but I can see it making a team more productive. The sad truth is that eventually you can see a situation where a team ends up being able to do more with the same number of staff or even do more with fewer staff and that is a clear concern for anyone joining the profession.

That is true across many professions. I don’t see though that that is something that’s clearly going to happen in a short space of time, say the next few years.

The models are improving but there are cautionary tales, there’s a defamation lawsuit as an AI model allegedly made a defamatory statement about someone, and there are stories of Chat GTP making up cases.

As a tool it helps but it still needs human review and intellect to look at the output, edit, consider, and maybe discard it but in the future it might change. We’re looking at how this technology can help, and I think it presents some interesting opportunities, but I don’t see it revolutionising our team for the foreseeable future.

Hybrid working is an interesting question.

There’s a huge amount of noise on the impact of working from home or in the office and people with strong positions.

Within my team nearly everyone is in four days a week. That works well, giving us the time, we need for collaboration but also some added flexibility.

As a lawyer, especially in the early career stages you need some face-to-face interaction with other lawyers from whom you can learn. You need to be in an environment where that osmosis

takes place which you don’t get from a Zoom call. It is important for lawyers starting out that they are willing to be in the office as required, that shows enthusiasm.

Law is renowned as being a career with not the best work life balance, do you think hybrid working will remedy some of that and encourage more people into a legal career?

I hope it does, and it needs to. The glass ceiling, especially for women is appalling. When I started, half of my trainee intake were women and further down the line, that proportion diminished. Childcare is an obvious cause and coming back into the profession after children isn’t always easy. Having the ability to work with that, and also for men as well, is crucial. One can see the benefits that have come from hybrid working and hopefully it can help to overcome the perception of law, especially in private practice as being a bit of a sweat shop.

You are a Trustee for ‘Help for Children’ – can you tell us a little about that?

I’ve been on this charity’s board for over ten years. It’s a hedge fund industry related charity that has branches including in the UK, US and Canada. Its objective is to prevent and treat child abuse and to disperse grants to other charities that can make a difference. We give out several hundred thousand pounds of grants a year and we always look for a charity proposal which gives a clear impact that can be measured. We apply some hedge fund criteria that we would use around a valuation to ensure the grant can make an immediate impact and achieve an aim. The work makes a difference but the problem is huge and distressing. To do anything is better than nothing but our aim is to grow the charity, raise more and each year give more. It’s something very close to my heart and which I intend to stay close to for many years.

What advice would you give to pupils interested in getting involved with philanthropy or supporting charitable organisations?

It’s great for young people to get involved. At Simmons & Simmons I became involved in ‘lawyers in the community’ where we helped nearby charities. I and other trainees helped

at a local Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

It was rewarding and planted a seed.

I became involved in other things, eventually the ‘Help for Children’ charity. Time is a useful commodity; we often think it’s about donating money but giving time to help is something everyone should be encouraged to do. If you can take advantage of starting at a law firm where these programmes exist, it’s great thing to get involved.

What is your favourite memory of Caterham?

The Debating Society, the late John Bleach, who sadly died a few years ago was instrumental in running it.

On 14 November every year, without fail, we had the annual debating dinner. Mr Bleach chose that date because it was Prince, now King, Charles’, birthday. Every year he invited Prince Charles and every year, without fail, the Prince’s Private Secretary responded and apologised that he would not be able to attend but wished us well. Mr Bleach didn’t give up, he kept trying! There were some great debates and we had some really good battles. That was probably the thing I was most passionate about in terms of co-curricular activity. It gave me a lot of enjoyment and John Bleach was great in running it and keeping everyone really engaged.

Great fun all round that was.

Did your time at Caterham contribute to you pursuing a career in law?

I think the Debating Society contributed to my eventual career.

From it I went onto join the Cambridge Union at university and saw friends

studying law, it all contributed.

I wouldn’t be able to put my finger on it and say ‘that is the reason’ but it was a factor, I’m sure of that.

I’ve always enjoyed words, writing and wordsmithing. I think the impact of the written word is huge, you can achieve an awful lot of good in a well written letter or email. As a career, law is one where you are always writing, and you need to be thoughtful about the impact each word has. That is one of the things that drew me to this career.

What advice would you give to A Level students who are deciding between doing a legal degree or a conversion?

It’s a personal decision, do what is right for you. The joy of university is the opportunity to study a subject that inspires and enthuses you and it’s important that you don’t give up on that. If you want to be a lawyer and do a law degree great but otherwise doing the subject, you want to do and then converting to law is a great option.

What advice would you offer Caterhamians interested in pursuing a career in law?

Go for it! It’s essential that you don’t allow negativity about how difficult it is to succeed to prevent you. Embrace your dreams, get as much experience as you can, speak to as many people as you can but also have a Plan B. You’ve got to think if it doesn’t work out what else might interest you. I think that’s true for all careers. Just because you are planning for possible failure doesn’t mean that you are going to fail. Give it all your commitment, it is hugely rewarding, it really is. 

Caroline Buckland

Caterham student Megan Swan interviewed Caroline Buckland (OC 2009) – Head of Global Fan Engagement at Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology. Sports lover Megan asked Caroline about her sports marketing career, including roles at Manchester City and Chelsea football clubs.

What are the primary responsibilities and goals in your role?

Formula 1 fandom is on a meteoric rise. It’s my role to acquire more fans around the world and develop their connections to the teams.

Most fans will probably never make it to a race as it’s very difficult and expensive to do so. Part of my role is breaking down some of the traditional barriers to entry in Formula 1 fandom, allowing fans to feel closer to the team and putting them closer to the heart of what we do. That can be through campaigns, experiences, competitions, events and other touchpoints.

My role has four key areas. The website and everything that you see and interact with on it. Our CRM proposition, so the emails and direct communications we send out to fans.

Our free fan loyalty programme, called ‘The Paddock’, and finally the world of web 3 which is NFTs (non-fungible tokens), the Metaverse and wherever that takes us next.

That all falls under my remit.

In terms of goals, acquisition is the first one, bringing more new fans in.

Then it’s about engagement. Once we’ve got those fans and we know a bit more about them it’s about ensuring they stay with us, keep engaging and want to keep coming back. It’s about doing the right things for fans.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Lots of things, it’s incredibly fast paced, no pun intended! It means you need to be agile, working in sport anything can happen. We are in a huge growth period so the way that we work is always changing.

I think the thing that I enjoy most is the freedom that we have for innovation and creativity. We’re on a journey of growth. Red Bull Racing really understands that, allows us to try new things and bring new thoughts and ideas to the table.

We can have a great idea on Monday and by Friday there’s full momentum behind it.

You can have a good idea, take it and run with it. Ideas can come 

from anywhere too from the marketing intern to the marketing director. If anyone comes up with a great idea they’re given the responsibility and empowerment to take that through to delivery. For me that’s something I enjoy most about where I work.

What trends and innovations do you foresee in the field of fan engagement?

From a strategic perspective there’s a huge shift in sport and entertainment to put fans at the heart of marketing strategies. We’ve handed the reins over to fans like never before. One of our biggest campaigns is called, ‘Make your Mark’ where we’re asking fans to design the car that we run in a few of our races, so taking our core product and giving it to the fans to design. This adds huge levels of complexity, ensuring new designs don’t add any weight to the car and that they’re still aero-dynamic but it was so important to us to put fans at the heart of what we’re doing.

From a tech perspective there’s a lot of change. We’ve seen the introductions of AI and advance of AR (Augmented Reality) bringing tech to the forefront.

Teams and organisations giving immersive experiences through tech is probably where we’ll see fan engagement go.

You were a high performing athlete yourself, representing England in netball and lacrosse. Did you always have an ambition to work in the Sports Industry?

Yes, I did. Sport has always been a big passion and I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in it. Specifically, I knew I wanted to work in football and my marketing career started at Manchester City. Before that I joined a graduate scheme at John Lewis which is an amazing company to work for, but I was always sure that I wanted to work in sport and set my sights on that.

Through the sport that I played, and representing England I always had an ambitious drive and clear vision of what I wanted to achieve. I made sure that when any opportunity came up for getting into football, I did everything I could to ensure that I was in with the best chance of making that happen.

Having worked with some of the biggest brands in global sport what have been the highlights of your career so far?

I love this question and have a highlight

from each of the sporting organisations I’ve worked for.

Manchester City was my first sports role and one I absolutely loved. I was a Marketing Executive there. My favourite project was working on rebranding the first team building and training areas.

I worked with the team psychologist to understand the players’ mindsets when they were in different areas, for example what would the mindset be when the team walk into the gym versus the changing rooms before a game? It was interesting to understand what would benefit the players at different times and what branding and pictures should be put up. That was an interesting project which took around 6 months in total. It’s still there, the imagery in the changing rooms are the things that we worked on.

I then moved on to Chelsea for three years. My Chelsea highlight is easy. I progressed up to Fan Engagement Lead where part of my remit was delivering match day experiences for fans including delivering a fan zone at the Champions League final in Porto in 2021. Ten days out the location changed from Istanbul to Porto due to Covid. At that point we found out we were going to be allowed to do a fan zone. I was thrown into leading the organisation for everything from obtaining permits from the municipality, hiring food trucks, organising games and photo booths, through to managing the headline stage act. It was one of the best days of my career and would be hard to top. We saw the fan zone in full swing then went to the stadium to watch the Champions League Final which we won. We then celebrated with the players at the after party. That was incredible.

I’ve had the good fortune of success following me around and we’ve had some winning moments at Red Bull Racing too. Max Verstappen, our lead driver won his first Championship quite early on in my career here. I was fortunate enough to be in Austin in the US last year when we won the Constructors Championship and we all celebrated together on the podium. My absolute highlight is the ‘Make your Mark’ fan car design campaign. We have had the first one of those come to life in Miami.

The winner, a graphic design student from Argentina came to see her design on the car that we ran there. The campaign translated across different touchpoints digitally and physically. It was talked about on TV and we had a special event for fans. So far that’s my biggest career highlight at Red Bull Racing.

What are the most significant challenges you have had to face in your career and how have these been overcome?

Covid changed the dynamic and the landscape that the sporting world operated in. I was at Chelsea and we had to totally change what we did for fans.

I oversaw the full entertainment package for fans on match days, everything that is not the 90 minutes of football on the pitch, so the stadium music, videos on the screens, the children that walk out with the players, mascots, pre-match entertainment. Suddenly we weren’t allowed to have fans in the stadium, but I still had to find ways to interact with them. It forced us to think differently to figure out what we could do to give fans a good experience.

Some of the things that came out of it were brilliant. We were in the FA Cup Final and hosted a show called Cup Final Fest from the roof of Stamford Bridge with celebrities, music and competitions.

Broadcast on YouTube and Facebook it gave fans an exciting pre-match build up.

We also dressed the stadium seats with banners and flags sent in by the fans. It was an odd and challenging time, and we hope never to go through it again, but we found different ways of working with fans and unlocked new ways of thinking and growth which continued after things returned to normal.

What is your favourite memory of Caterham?

My absolute highlight is the ‘Make your Mark’ fan car design campaign. We have had the first one of those come to life in Miami.

My favourite memories will always be the sports we played at Caterham. One of the best for me was going to the National Schools’ Finals for netball in 2008, the teamwork and team spirit was amazing.

We won the county and regional rounds and went to the finals and I think finished 7th, a huge achievement. We all got our own branded hoodies and it felt so momentous to represent our school. That team built my love for sports and will always be something that I look back on extremely fondly. Our netball coaches, Nat Lomas and Helen Sanderson were a huge part of the success we had and the team spirit we built.

How did your school sporting experience influence your career today?

It lit the touch paper for where I wanted to go. Representing your county builds that drive and ambition. I was fortunate to play for Surrey with Lottie Gregory and Emily Buckett from my year and the

three of us wanted to go as far as we could. The teamwork mentality is so important, being surrounded by others and finding the best ways to get the best out of everyone drives you and gives you the determination to succeed. I think you take that determination with you into the working world.

For me it was about finding my true passion, making sure I did everything that I could to follow that and find a career path in sport. If you know what you want to achieve you will find ways in which to put yourself in the best positions to be able to do that. You need a little bit of luck along the way but working towards goals and targets and being clear on that gives you the best chance to achieve them.

The flip side of playing sport is that it helps you understand athletes’ psychology which gives insight when working in the industry. I’ve worked with players and my sporting experience helps in understanding what might be motivating or worrying them. It can also help in crisis moments if things don’t go as hoped. You can start to understand some of the emotions involved.

What advice would you give to other Caterhamians wanting to embark on a career in sport?

It’s an extremely popular industry but unfortunately, it’s a small world and there aren’t tons of roles. Getting your foot in the door is about making connections. Go out of your way to talk to people who you may know in the industry or who may be working towards a career in it. Message them on LinkedIn, attend networking events, find internships.

The more people in the industry that you meet the more chances you have to impress and when an opportunity arises, you’re more likely to be front of mind.

If it’s a passion of yours chase it, it might not come straight away, keep your eyes peeled and hopefully something will come along that fits the bill and you’ll be ready. That’s what I did. I was fortunate enough to notice when something did come up and I’d done the prep. If you’ve done the work in advance and spoken to as many people as you can then you’re best placed to get the role that you want. 

A stellar line up of historians and authors joined us for Caterham’s inaugural History Festival on Saturday 18 November. A packed audience comprised students from across the Southeast, including our partner schools, parents and members of the public were treated firstclass speakers on a range of fascinating topics and the opportunity to gain signed copies of their books.

Paul Lay, Editor of History Today, spoke first on Cromwell’s Protectorate.

Focusing on the little-known readmission of the Jews to England under Cromwell, he provided fascinating insights into the roots of anti-Semitism in England and the centrality of the Jews to the Millenarian mindset.

Having set the bar so high, Paul was followed by James Barr, who gave a fascinating talk on the role of Britain and France in shaping, for good and ill, the modern Middle East. Incorporating a physical map delineating the boundary lines drawn c.1910, James’ talk was erudite and engaging, dovetailing beautifully with Paul’s earlier work. 

Next to speak was Giles Milton, prolific author of historical non-fiction and fiction, who brought us further forward in history, speaking on the division of Berlin between 1945–49.

Charismatic and articulate, Giles provided thought-provoking insights into the often-fractious relationship between both the Soviets and the Western Allies, and between the Western Allies themselves.

After this, the audience took a well-earned break to refuel and re-caffeinate before we were treated to Marion Gibson’s exploration of Witchcraft through an analysis of thirteen different trials ranging across geographical and chronological bounds. Marion spoke in conversation with our own Rob Salem, giving a different flavour from the style of talks that went before.

Up fifth was Tom Cryer, who came to speak to us from UCL on his PhD subject of John Hope Franklin, the American Civil Rights movement, and his own passion for history. A fascinating and intellectually stimulating speech, Tom left his audience in no doubt that he has a bright future in academic before him.

Lastly, we reached our headline speaker, Sir Anthony Seldon. Sir Anthony spoke in conversation with the headmaster, Ceri Jones, on a wide-ranging and rigorous analysis of Boris Johnson’s time in Number 10. Witty, erudite, and deeply knowledgeable, Sir Anthony kept the audience gripped with sharp-eyed analysis and personal anecdotes involving the key individuals.

As the day came to an end, we thanked all of our speakers for sharing their wisdom and insight with us. A particular commendation should go to those stalwarts who attended every minute of every talk, and there was a fantastic turnout from both the school community and beyond. We look forward to welcoming everyone back again for the second iteration of the festival!

The programme of physical Insight Evenings, held in London, and Hong Kong for the first time in 2023, plus Insight Webinars provide a brilliant platform to share that wisdom.

From insights into the fast paced world of finance to shifting global politics, there is always something new to discover. For our Sixth Form both at Caterham School, and at the London Academy of Excellence’s Caterham House, the insights and connections are particularly valuable as they contemplate their future careers. INAUGURAL HONG KONG INSIGHT EVENING

Parents, teachers and Old Caterhamians from across the decades joined together in Hong Kong in September 2023 to begin the school year and celebrate the inaugural CaterhamConnected HK Insight evening.

The focus of the Insight Evening was Innovating Futures with a panel of impressive leaders and changemakers.

Mr Jones was joined on stage for a stimulating Q&A session by OCs Mark Joiner and Jason Tong together with current Caterham parent Antoinette Hoon, partner at PWC. Fellow parent Raymond Chao, PWC Chairman, Asia gave an impactful speech to bring the evening to a close. He reminded us of the importance of embracing technology, that it is here to stay but equally the importance of using it responsibly whilst exercising human judgement and sound business ethics. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all at this truly global event – the first of many in Hong Kong.

INSIGHT WEBINAR FOLLOWS US PRESIDENTIAL RACE

As the tectonic plates of global politics continued to shift, we once again tapped into the wisdom of Old Caterhamian and former White House advisor Geoffrey Kemp for his thoughts on the 2024 US Presidential race for our summer Insight Webinar.

The evening begun with Headmaster Ceri Jones getting straight to the point with knowledgeable questioning. However, proving both his wisdom and experience, Geoffrey declined to offer a win prediction, deferring instead to the Macmillan adage “Events, dear boy, events”. Given that this webinar fell when Biden

still had yet to debate his opponent, Trump had yet to visit Pennsylvania and Harris was yet to emerge, Geoffrey’s answer was a faultless prediction in itself.

A fascinating discussion ensued with Mr Kemp bringing different angles and insights from his side of pond to a fascinated Caterham webinar audience drawn from across the globe. The questions from across the age range could have continued long into the night, but eventually the audience had to be satisfied with Geoffrey’s kind offer to reconvene once the final result is sealed.

INNOVATING LAW

CaterhamConnected returned to Glaziers’ Hall in London for our autumn 2023 Insight Evening, this time on the topic of Innovating Law. Leading the evening were six of our CaterhamConnected members who have excelled in the legal profession.

Old Caterhamian Jon May, partner, general counsel and head of compliance at Marshall Wace delivered the keynote to a raptured audience of 100 staff, alumni, parents and pupils. With over twenty years' experience, he offered huge insight into the future of the legal profession as we looked toward UK and International development and changes.

Joining him to create our esteemed panel of legal professionals were OC Daniel Adams, OC Oliver Byrne and Caterham parents Victoria Francis, Rahul Manvatkar and Claire Stockford.

A huge thank you to them for sharing their time and wisdom with us.

Once again, our pupils at Caterham and our friends at our partner school the London Academy of Excellence shone brightly, offering a mature perception of key themes and engaging in insightful conversation for the evening.

A stellar line up of entrepreneurs shared their wisdom with Sixth Form pupils, Old Cats and parents at our spring 2024 Insight Evening held in the City of London. The event was hosted by Alfa Systems with CEO Andrew Denton giving the opening keynote speech.

The packed audience rotated around our six successful and experienced entrepreneurs, learning from the inspiration and resilience it takes to turn a great idea into a thriving business. Each of our guest speakers had a different journey to share.

Insight Evenings provide our Sixth Formers the opportunity to cut their networking teeth and OCs and parents the chance to connect with leading lights across a wide range of sectors, all connected by Caterham School.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF RUGBY ON HOME FIELD

On 17 November we welcomed back our rugby players and coaches of the past to celebrate 100 years of rugby being played on our iconic Home Field.

Celebrating the successes of those who have donned black and gold stripes, our coaches and players reminisced key tries, collapsed scrums and the occasional stolen line out. Our guests delighted over a specially curated exhibition looking back on rugby at the school with team photos and news snippets from our archive.

Highlights included the Yugoslavia tour of 1985, our 2002 Girls VII’s team coming runners up in the National Schools’ Sevens and several rugby photos featuring former staff as players themselves. This was wound up by Mr Taylor, our Director of Rugby, addressing the guests on behalf of Caterham School to thank those who continually show support through playing, coaching, and most importantly cheering from the side lines.

MALAYSIA GATHERING

Headmaster Mr Ceri Jones was delighted to host a reunion in Kuala Lumpur for alumni living in the region on 30 October.

The event took place at the Royal Selangor Golf Club and was well attended by Old Cats who left Caterham from 1989 through to 2015. Caterham School has a long history of welcoming pupils from Malaysia it is wonderful to know that the School retains so many supporters and connections across the region. We would like to thank Chris Syer MBE for kindly arranging this event.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2023 The Caterham School community, including parents, Old Caterhamians and friends of the School gathered to remember the fallen on Sunday 13 November.

Music for the Remembrance Service was provided by the School’s Wind Band who supported hymns and the National Anthem with appropriate pomp and style.

Working together with CCF, impeccable precision was displayed in performances of Holst’s ‘March’ from his 1st suite for military band.

A new work was composed by our Head of Instrumental Music, Dr Chris Brammeld which featured excerpts from various military themes; opening with a haunting and thoughtprovoking piccolo solo accompanied by the Corps of Drums, followed by a beautiful chorale played by the whole band with the iconic Last Post intertwined. Our Corps of Trumpets marked the poignant end to the silence with great elegance both at the Act of Remembrance on Friday and at the Service of Remembrance.

The School’s sacred choirs, JETS, ETS and Chamber Choir performed their annual ‘Recital of Reflection and Contemplation’ following the Remembrance Service. The recital, held in the Wilberforce Hall, continued the tradition of a short, emotional performance where powerful texts are chosen to further commemorate the day. As always, the choirs gave polished performances of beautiful pieces which included old and modern settings of well-known texts associated with Remembrance Day. The occasion brought together our sacred choral family; pupils in Year 6 to Upper Sixth working together and blending in harmony. Parents, Old Caterhamians and staff were moved by the recital and congratulations must go to all of the singers for their continued dedication to their role in providing excellent music for whole-school occasions such as Remembrance Day, Carol Services and Speech Day.

We were delighted to be joined by OCs from 1953 through to 1981 joined together for the annual over 60’s Christmas lunch. This year it took place at The Oyster Shed in London overlooking the River Thames.

The event was heartwarming and nostalgic, bringing together old classmates from different walks of life whilst the crowd enjoyed a wonderful three course festive menu alongside a selection of wines.

Laughter and shared memories filled the air as we caught up on each others’ lives and reminisced about the old school days. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect and strengthen the bonds that were formed so many years ago.

OCA BOARDERS REUNION MARCH 2024

It was a heartwarming experience to witness the reunion of numerous OCA boarders with their Caterham ‘family’ in the vibrant city of London.

Former pupils and boarding parents and matrons gathered together for a memorable evening, the air was filled with laughter, joy, and the unmistakable warmth of camaraderie. Against the backdrop of a bustling cityscape, old friends and acquaintances reconnected, sharing tales of their journeys since they last met, reminiscing about cherished memories, and creating new ones.

The ambiance was infused with an infectious energy, as conversations flowed freely over glasses of drinks and nibbles. It was a testament to the enduring bonds forged within the Caterham community, a testament to the enduring spirit of connection that transcends time and distance. Indeed, it was a night to cherish, a night where the ties of friendship were reaffirmed, and the sense of belonging was palpable in every shared smile and heartfelt exchange.

SUPER CAR SUNDAY FEBRUARY 2024

Rarely does the main school car park look so glamorous, or indeed do drivers navigate Harestone Valley Road’s speed bumps so tenderly, as on Super Car Sunday!

This was the second such event held at the school and it was wonderful to meet so many car owners and their vehicles. After a welcome bacon butty in the Headmaster’s study our intrepid owners had every right to show off their marvellous machines classic and new. The stunning vehicles, all with very different pedigrees but equally loved, drew a large crowd and plenty of enthusiastic chat.

Thank you to everyone for helping us make a success of this day, for braving a chilly morning and for generously sharing and showing your vehicle!

Following unanimous feedback from this our second event, we plan to hold this event again, hopefully making it even bigger and better.

OCA SPRING SPORTS DAY FEBRUARY 2024 A great day for sports and catching up with old friends and teachers at the School.

It was wonderful to welcome back so many Old Cats to play hockey, netball and basketball with parents and friends to cheer the sides. This year the parents’ ‘Back to Netball’ group joined in the tournament, and with so many Old Cats returning for hockey, we fielded two matches including ‘Gold Cats’ v Recent Leavers.

NETBALL REPORT Sunday 25 February saw the ‘Old NetCats’ return to the court to take on the current 1st Team NetCats and the Back 2 Netball NetCats. The three teams entered into a tough fought triangular with the Old Cats coming out on top with a total of 41–32 on goal difference versus the 1st VII. The Old Cats Team comprised of recent leavers from 2023 through to leavers from 2016. With Ronnie, Ellie and Rhianna returning back from Uni to take to the court scooping up all the rebounds and precision shooting dominating in the circles. 1st VII players Lucy and Sienna putting Georgie and Ria to the test in mid-court with their super quick changes of direction but deep drives to the pocket and down court vision allowed the Old Cats efficient transitions through the court ending with an easy ball in to Katie to finish with a goal every time.

The Back 2 Netball Team proved their skills putting up a strong challenge to both the 1st VII and Old Cats.

HOCKEY REPORT Caterham School welcomed back a multi-generational squad of Old Cats for the annual contest; including a cohort of recent leavers and a seasoned nucleus of more weathered old cats.

Inspired by a rendition of “the boys are back in town” blasting through his aux on the drive down Harestone Valley Road, the mercurial James Foggin led the Old Cats to an extensive warm up. Tension was palpable as the first XI arrived for push back.

Once the match commenced, the First XI found themselves dominating possession and forced an early own goal via the stick of Harvey New. The Old Cats pushed back strong however, and the pre-match (two minute) short corner practice paid dividends with a deserved equaliser. Honours even at half time, the game was finely poised.

The second half had a frenetic start. Alex Peet’s very existence nearly peaked with an attempted overhead volley, whilst Isaac Quinton overcame attempted assault on one of many dangerous attacks. A miscalculated flurry of substitutes led to 12 Old Cats on the pitch for much of the second half, but even dishonourable tactics couldn’t halt the first XI as they charged to a 3–1 lead.

A few individual defensive performances from Dan Castle and Ryan Dale in particular kept the old cats within distance – when finally a breakaway emerged.

James Foggin, whose performance otherwise questioned his self-proclaimed ability, captivated the crowd with a well struck equaliser to leave the game on knife’s edge.

The Old Cats needed one last chance to equalise, which happened… A scintillating breakaway led to Charlie Hammond producing a pinpoint cross to a recent leaver at the back post. Unfortunately, with all the goal to aim for an astonishing miss was produced. Fortunately the recent leaver’s identity will remain unwritten to save any embarrassment and after he was swiftly substituted.

Despite a valiant final push, the whistle sounded to mark a 3–2 win for the current first XI. Overall, the day was a fantastic spectacle hugely enjoyed by all.

Enormous thanks must go to Mr Patterson for seamlessly organising all aspects of the day. We look forward to next year and welcoming leavers with more OCs coming back each time! It was honestly great to see so many faces from school days who took part in the Netball and Basketball as well.

BASKETBALL REPORT The basketball match between the OCs and the school was a thrilling and tightly fought contest that had spectators on the edge of their seats. Led by the dynamic leadership of Sihu Jung, the OCs team showcased a combination of seasoned experience and raw talent, stunning their opponents with their flair and skill, and seizing an unexpected lead during the initial stages of the game. However, as the match progressed, it became apparent that the school team’s superior conditioning and relentless determination would not be easily overcome.

With the halftime break providing an opportunity to regroup and refocus, the school team emerged revitalized, gradually narrowing the gap on the scoreboard. Despite the OCs’ valiant efforts, the school team’s relentless pressure ultimately proved too much to handle, as they surged ahead in the final moments to secure a hardfought 48–42 victory, leaving both teams and spectators alike with a memorable display of competitive spirit and athleticism.

OVER 60S SUMMER LUNCH

The history of Caterham School was brought to life as our over 60s OCs shared their school experiences with First Year pupils at the OCA’s Over 60’s Summer Lunch.

A nostalgic lunch was served in the old Dining Hall, now known as the Wilberforce Hall, followed by tours of the School. It was wonderful to hear memories from Old Caterhamians reminiscing about their time in boarding as they visited Mottrams and Beech Hanger, as well as relived lessons in Shirley Goss. Many returning OCs had not visited the School in some time and were impressed with the new buildings and facilities developed over the last few decades.

Over afternoon tea, pupils heard stories about the OCs’ former teachers, lessons, pranks and daily life. The event was a chance for the current pupils to provide the visitors with an insight into the changes and continuities of academic and co-curricular life at Caterham.

Being back on the School grounds certainly evoked lots of memories for the OCs and provided a chance for current pupils to find out first-hand about the history and traditions of the School.

Laughter and memories filled the Refectory as OCs returned to School for a fun filled summer afternoon.

A wonderful lunch was served in the Refectory followed by tours of the School which certainly prompted many memories, and afternoon tea.

It was wonderful to hear memories from Old Cats who attended Caterham School, reminiscing about their time in boarding when visiting Beech Hanger, being the first girls in the school and legendary sports fixtures and drama productions.

OLD CATERHAMIANS’ GOLF SOCIETY

OC GOLF SOCIETY WINTER MEETING

The Old Caterhamians’ Golfing Society held its seventh Winter Meeting at Walton Heath Golf Club on Friday 10 November – the first event of Old Cats weekend.

Having hosted the Women’s Open in September, which many of us had attended, we knew we were in for a treat, especially in light of recent improvements to the facilities.

We were blessed with a great turnout of 32 players who entered in pairs taking their combined Stableford scores. The weather was challenging, with steady rain for most of the competition but the course, which was in excellent condition, held up incredibly well.

The club always make us feel very welcome and the hospitality is legendary in golfing circles.

Once again the grit and determination of our members was evident and most should have been very satisfied with their scores which in normal circumstances would have made for a very close finish. However this was no ordinary year, with one pair exceeding all others – Old Cats Alex Chapman and John Fawls won with a combined score of 82, followed by Paul Rawden and Andrew Palmer on 69. Cameron Brown hit a wonderful tee shot to win longest drive and Chappers also claimed nearest the pin. The ordeal on the course was followed by some hilarious regaling of imperfect shots and stewards’ enquiries over handicaps over a sumptuous lunch.

OC GOLF SOCIETY SPRING MEETING

This year’s OC golfing season opened on 2 April with our Spring Meeting which was once again held at Rye Golf Club in East Sussex on the south coast.

It is a privilege to play this traditional links course and we are indebted to OC, past Honorary Secretary of our society and Rye member Charlie Waud for facilitating this event.

The weather has been so dreary this past few weeks that it was no surprise to see a dreadful forecast and torrential rain as we left Surrey.

However the bravery of our members was justly rewarded with very pleasant sunshine, no precipitation until the 36th hole and a gusty breeze to add some spice to the challenges we confronted.

The main event was the morning foursomes where our new Honorary Secretary Ross McInley and Honorary Treasurer Ali Bownass scored an exceptional 38 points to beat the field by two points. Following a sumptuous lunch everyone stayed for a second round of foursomes played as a two team match.

We now look forward to another successful year for OC golfers with a wide range of ages coming together with other keen players from all elements of the Caterham School family. DOUBLE OLYMPIAN OPENS SUPER CHARGED SPORTS CENTRE

Team GB legend and wellbeing campaigner Dame Kelly Holmes opened Caterham School’s new supercharged sports centre on Tuesday 27 February 2024.

The double gold medal winning athlete led an indoor sports session with East Surrey Learning Partnership and local junior schools and answered their many questions before joining Caterham pupils for a GCSE and A Level sports training session. Dame Kelly shared her career highlights and challenges with the pupils as well as her belief in the importance of having a dream and pursuing it with determination and resilience, and the importance of lifelong friendships.

Dame Kelly set and still holds the British records in the 800m and 1000m, is an Olympic, Commonwealth and European champion that has achieved seven Gold, eight Silver and four Bronze medals throughout her career. This includes her double win in the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, becoming the first Briton in over 80 years to do so.

After her Olympic success, she won BBC Sports Personality of the Year, European Athlete of the Year and was honoured with a Damehood from the Queen.

Before cutting the ribbon on the new Sports Centre, Dame Kelly met with teachers, parents, trustees and members of the local community. Remarking on the School’s sports facilities, the school’s fielding of A to E teams each week and the drive to support community sport, Dame Kelly said: “With investment anything is possible but the school is brilliant at opening them 

(sports facilities) to the local community, everyone benefits. The enthusiasm of the head, the teachers, support staff and, my favourite, the PE teachers is amazing.”

First and Second Year pupils made sure the countdown to opening was heard across the Harestone Valley before confetti cannons fired and the building was officially declared open.

Caterham’s supercharged Sports Centre contains a purpose designed and fitted professional standard performance gym, sports teaching facilities, changing facilities and new sports cafe in addition to a 25-metre swimming pool and multi-purpose sports hall.

In addition to enhancing the school’s facilities for pupils the centre is open to the local community for individual use, for use by local state-maintained school partners and community sports groups for training and coaching sessions.

Caterham School also hosts the town’s community sports clubs including rugby, lacrosse and cricket clubs at its Hill Fields sports grounds.

The wider importance of sport was a key theme of the official opening day. Soon after her double gold medal win, Kelly set up the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. The charity helps guide disadvantaged young people, getting their lives back on track by using world class athletes to engage, enable and empower, attitudes they need to fulfil a positive life. She encourages the same philosophy that she lives by, nothing is impossible.

OCEANIC RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT FOR MONCRIEFF-JONES CHRISTMAS LECTURE

On the evening of Tuesday 5 December 2023, the Moncrieff-Jones Society was delighted to welcome Dr Amy Jewell to present her undergraduate, PhD, and career research into various aspects of oceanography.

Since its establishment in 1967, Moncrieff-Jones has been a goldmine of well researched and presented pupil lectures about scientific topics outside the A-Level curricula. Our pupils have presented on biology, chemistry, physics, astrophysics, quantum science, medicine, and almost every possible discipline – and our Christmas lecturers have continued in this spirit. This week’s lecture contained something for everyone: chemical analysis of Saharan dust clouds; studying ancient climate patterns through analysis of seabed sediments; the causes of oil spills and how their cleanups are planned and carried out. Dr Jewell told her compelling story of developing from an undergraduate in Oceanography with French to a key member of a global team dedicated to resolving oil spills all over the world.

WRIGHT SOCIETY LECTURE: OLD CATERHAMIAN DR LUKE BASHFORD OPENS UP THE WORLD OF NEUROSCIENCE

The Wright Society was delighted to welcome Dr Luke Bashford back to Caterham on Tuesday 5 March to talk about his research on Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and his career in neuroscience.

His research has been transformative not only to neuroscience but also to the patients in the clinical trials such as giving a husband the ability to feel the sensation of his wife holding his hand again.

The lecture had a diverse audience comprising of pupils of all ages interested in vastly different branches of science from computer science to psychology, parents, Old Caterhamians and even other guests such as Dr Richard Wright – the patron of the Wright Society.

Speaking to these people after the lecture, it seemed that everyone gained something from it, including the aspiring medics who were given the opportunity to see photos taken during the surgery done to implant these BCIs – apparently a relatively simple operation in the world of neurosurgery.

The Wright Society is Caterham School’s medic society which supports sixth formers in their application to Medical School. It is invaluable to aspiring medics as they are given opportunities such as this one which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. We would like to extend a huge thanks to Mr Quinton, who runs the society, Dr Luke Bashford for his incredible talk and Justin and Katie who are the current President and Vice President of the society.

SPEECH DAY 2024

The traditional Caterham School Speech Day was marked in style with the school community gathered in the tradition marquee which transforms ‘Titch Pitch’ year summer.

Chair of Trustees Monisha Shah gave a warm welcome and Headmaster Ceri Jones guided assembled guests through the many highlights of the 2023/24 academic year.

Be the hero of your own story was the clear instruction from guest of honour Philippa Forrester, who encouraged pupils to be brave and to be themselves as they moved out into the world beyond school.

Philippa was BBC Children’s TV’s resident host for four years before presenting Robot Wars and Tomorrow’s World. Philippa is a keen environmentalist and continues to present and produce wildlife programmes. Alongside her presenting career, Philippa completed a BSc in Ecology and Conservation and made natural history films for the BBC including My Halcyon River, Wye Voices of the Valley, Halcyon River Diaries, and a series for Animal Planet.

Our three pupil Heads of School gave a warm but humorous insight into their careers at Caterham School with tributes paid to the entire departing Upper Sixth Form As the ceremony closed and families spilled out onto the margins of Home Field for drinks, the weather held fair for the OCA versus 1st XI cricket match. This gave the gathered parents, OCs and pupils the perfect excuse to say a long fond farewell as another successful school year concluded.

THE LIGHTNING THIEF – AWARD NOMINATED!

Winter 2023’s senior school musical took us on a journey to Camp Half Blood where Perseus Jackson learned what it meant to be the son of Poseidon.

The Lightning Thief, based on the Percy Jackson novels by Rick Riordan, follows the half-blood’s journey as he goes on a quest with his two best friends; the tough daughter of Athena, and a wellmeaning Satyr. Along the way they have to face monsters alongside their own inner demons, and overcome it all to retrieve Zeus’ lost lightning bolt.

When the musical was announced in spring 2023, scepticism ruled. The Lightning Thief is not a particularly well-known show, especially as it hasn’t really crossed the Atlantic.

Pupils were aware of the novels (some were big fans!) but the idea of the musical didn’t necessarily spark immediate joy.

Nevertheless, we had a great turn out for auditions and ended up

with an incredible cast. It’s safe to say that by closing night, the scepticism had dissipated. In talking to audience members after each performance, the comment that came up repeatedly was how clear it was that the cast were having a great time.

I concur: backstage, the mood was euphoric every evening, sometimes hysterical, and always exceptionally positive and supportive. I was so impressed to see pupils from across the year groups, Third Year to Upper Sixth, crew members included, encouraging each other and enjoying the experience as a whole team. This has genuinely been one of the most collaborative and cohesive productions I’ve had to the fortune to direct, and I’ve loved every second of working with this phenomenally talented and kind group of pupils.

Congratulations to everyone who helped me put this (bonkers) production together. The music, special effects and performances joined in perfect harmony to create

a production none of us will forget in a while. And the cherry on top of the cake? We are nominated in four categories in this year’s National School Theatre Awards: Best Production, Best Actor (Max K), Best Actress (Emily B) and Best Female Solo (Zoe T). Finalists and selected performers were invited to the awards ceremony in London later in the year and, even better, we were thrilled to announce that we were also invited to perform at the ceremony June 2024! We decided to perform ‘Killer Quest’, the upbeat number at the end of Act One which sends Percy on his quest and sets the tone for his adventures to come. We were so excited to have been offered this opportunity; it’s a real testament to how impressive and memorable the production was, and to how much hard work the cast and crew put into it.

SPECTACULAR CONCERT AT ST JOHN’S, WATERLOO

Our spectacular concert at St John’s Church in Waterloo marked the return of Caterham School’s presence in central London.

A magnificent programme featured the best of our choral and orchestral ensembles as well as outstanding soloists. The performance celebrated the tremendous achievements of Caterham School’s singers and musicians and in particular, their maturity, passion and understanding of complex musical works. As with many of our concerts, pupils from both Caterham Prep and Senior School worked together.

Performers spanned Year 5 (Prep) to Upper Sixth.

The first half of the concert explored the theme of ‘light’ through the enchanting, timeless medium of choral music. Chamber Choir and ETS performed a selection of ethereal motets. From Chamber Choir, ‘Northern Lights’ (a stunning piece inspired by the aurora borealis) and ‘Lux Beata’ (featuring a beautiful oboe solo by Fourth Year pupil, Abi P) by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and ‘O Radiant Dawn’ by Scottish composer James McMillan (featuring stunning solos from Tiffany K (Upper Sixth) and Emily B (Lower Sixth). From ETS, two settings of the text Lux Aeterna enchanted all who were present. The first was written

by Canadian composer Randall Stroope and the second by Mr Adam Assen, Director of Music. This exciting premiere, composed especially for ETS, was a joy to hear. The choirs combined alongside Caterham School’s Film Orchestra to perform Bob Chilcott’s uplifting ‘Canticles of Light’– a subtle yet dramatic setting of hymns from the Liturgia Horarum that explores darkness and light across three movements. The prolific ‘giant’ of British choral music visited Caterham School days before our concert – an exciting and joyous experience for every singer and musician.

‘…Your students in both choirs and orchestra were outstanding. The way they worked together in such a positive way, their confidence, which came from their commitment and ability was just superb. I felt really moved because in the end, both choirs really gave a very accomplished and special version of a piece that is not easy.’ Bob Chilcott Our solo performers represented the instrumental families with immense style and precision.

Catherine Yap (Second Year), Organ; Menuetto – Impromptu by John Ireland, Alice H (Upper Sixth), Flute Sonata – second movement by Edwin York Bowen, Alvin P (Lower Sixth), Trumpet Concerto in E flat – first movement by Johann Neruda, Annette S (Fourth Year), Harp, La Source (The Fountain) by Albert Zabel and, Florence N (Third Year), Piano Sonata in F major, – third movement. Congratulations must go to all of our soloists – they exuded confidence and demonstrated an incredibly high level of technical ability.

The final section of the concert was delivered by Sinfonia, our senior orchestra. The programme represented musical grandeur, where the symphonic forces of the past converge to create unforgettable auditory masterpieces. Outstanding and riveting performances of Romeo & Juliet, Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky and Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov left our audience spell-bound. The final work, Symphony No. 104 in D Major, “London”, by Franz Joseph Haydn was truly remarkable. To hear a full symphony performed at such a high level was a huge achievement and required such immense stamina and focus.

Well done to every performer for a wonderful performance of challenging and ambitious music.

Prep school pupils and their families arrived in their PJs to board the Polar Express at the Humphreys Theatre. Christmas had definitely arrived with golden ticket access to some goodies to enjoy during the film followed by a surprise visit from Father Christmas.

CHRISTMAS DINNER DANCE DECEMBER 2023

Christmas kicked off at the start of December with the PA Christmas Dinner Dance, night filled with fun, laughter and generosity. A festive affair, complete with twinkling lights, cheerful decorations, and a warm atmosphere that captured the spirit of the season.

The school community came together to celebrate and make a positive impact on our new charity. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our amazing community partners, who generously donated so many prizes for our charity auction to support the Make Way Foundation. Their support played a crucial role in making our event a success, and we are grateful for their commitment to giving back.

Likewise, thanks to the brilliant PA Christmas Dinner Dance team in organising such a great event.

We’d also like to thank Fleur and Matthew for their speech during the evening, sharing their story and that of the Foundation.

Everything they have done to date and their amazing efforts the next day at the Superhero Triathlon has been phenomenal and inspiring to us all. The funds raised during the auction, prize draw and collections on the night will be directed entirely to the Make Way Foundation and, while we don’t have a final total yet, we hope to have funded at least five wheelchairs – watch this space for updates next term.

PA SPRING FAIR MARCH 2024

The Spring Fair witnessed four seasons in one day as throughout the morning sunshine, hail and even a rainbow greeted us. Needless to say the occasion was, by necessity, an indoor event but retained all the fun of the fair with an Easter trail and lots of pocket money stalls brilliantly run by Year 6 pupils who kept the crowds entertained.

ALUMNI SPORTS

For many of us, the team camaraderie, the pure love of playing and the community spirit around each game provided life long memories of school sport. The good news is that the very same spirit is evident throughout our Old Caterhamian sporting community. Whether playing at the annual rugby, lacrosse, hockey or cricket fixtures held at school or as part of the OCA team in one of the many alumni sports fixtures held against fellow alumni sports clubs, sport is a fantastic way to retain strong links to the school and local community.

Below are a couple of highlights of the 2023–24 alumni sporting season.

OC HOCKEY HAILEYBURY 6-A-SIDE

On Sunday 17 September, a seasoned cadre of Old Cats travelled up to Haileybury School for the annual 6-a-side hockey tournament. Long before first push back, disaster struck. The 7 man squad soon became 6 as Mark Chatfield’s clutch gave in – an inevitable fate following years of older brother Ed’s erratic driving.

Elsewhere, the ensemble ascending from London were stalled in unrelenting traffic; made more insufferable only

by Cam Lagerberg’s hastily volunteered London dating anecdotes as onboard entertainment. This left us 15 minutes before kick off with a squad of two and one stick between them…

Fortunately the traffic eventually dissipated and we were ready to go. With the flavour of tea still fresh in Adam Morley’s unconventionally moulded gumshield, we found ourselves celebrating a comfortable 1–0 win against Aldenham. A hard fought loss against Bishop’s Stortford was followed by two draws and a win against Cheltenham, Haileybury and St Albans respectively. Highlights from the group stage included Charlie Hammond’s glorious reverse hit into the top corner and Harvey New’s deadly finishing into our own net defending a short corner. As a result, we headed into lunch having qualified for the semi-finals.

The afternoon’s hockey unfortunately suffered at the hands of the poorly timed lunch and fatigue from a lack of substitutes. So beset with weariness was Charlie Hammond over lunch that he piled food directly onto his lunch tray; foregoing the customary plate. Despite heroic performances from Cam Lagerberg (enlarged by a double lunch portion), we found ourselves bowing out in a respectable fourth place.

Special mention must go also to Fraser Hart for making up the numbers last minute and James Foggin for proving his class throughout.

OC CRICKET VICTORY

On Sunday 16 June an Old Caterhamians cricket side contested and won convincingly the first round of the cricketer’s trophy against Kings Rochester Old Boys by 201 runs.

The OCA batted first and posted 279 runs being all out in the 41st over with Ankush Patel scoring 57 and Chris Bishop, Owen Cawood and Ethan Whenman all making valuable contributions. When the OCA fielded Ankush Patel was to the fore again with 4 wickets and thoroughly deserved his Man of the Match Award. Captain Jonny Naylor bowled extremely well taking three wickets.

Old Caterhamian Arjun Patel left Caterham in 2006 to study Medicine at the University of Nottingham. He went to qualify as a GP. Arjun’s natural curiosity, people skills and entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue business ventures alongside his medical work, a path which led him to be Managing Partner of private investors Karan Capital.

Interview with

Arjun Patel You’ve had a fascinating career from being a General Practitioner through to working with entrepreneurs, what led you from medicine to Karan Capital?

OC John Paul interviewed Arjun for Omnia to find out more about his career path.

When I started working as a junior doctor, I learnt that in a big institution like the NHS you are not in control of your day-to-day life and realised that one day I wanted to own my own business.

I continued my training but also started a side business, delivering aesthetic treatments.

I learnt how to set up a business and then started a company training dentists, doctors and nurses to administer treatments. 

I enjoyed selling a product, interacting with people, managing a team and having extra income. At every step I was learning about financials, managing people and different businesses, like dentists who ran successful stand-alone practices.

I spent lots of time looking at their business models and decided to do something within dentistry. I researched buying a dental practice and getting lending for it. This was all new territory but what made it possible was that research and planning was largely free. I took the leap and in 2018, with a partner, I bought a dental practice.

We grew the practice and invested any profit into buying other practices.

Fast forward three years and we sold to a bigger group.

On the back of my exit from that business, I joined forces with my father, at Karan Capital, where we work together investing in companies.

The key to making the change was a lot of planning and realising what I wanted, which perhaps I didn’t know when I was 18.

I still practice as a GP but most of my day-to-day is at Karan Capital.

What is the highlight of your career so far?

I think you should not be scared of who you are working with, so being open and honest and having a culture where the door is open and you can talk freely is key.

The highlight is the reward for risk.

The risk was changing career path when, from age 18, I had planned to be a doctor for life. The reward came from learning as I built the business, giving people employment and ultimately the financial reward when I sold the business. That was the big turning point for me in my career.

What have been the most significant challenges in your career?

There are many parts of medicine that I love; working as part of a big team and being around incredible people, who are often selfless, extremely intelligent and caring.

Also interacting with patients and being able to help them. My biggest challenge in medicine was pressing the button and saying, ‘I’m going to leave this’.

The biggest challenge I have faced at Karan Capital has been taking on the responsibility of leadership and being accountable when something goes wrong or things need changing.

A challenge was taking up the leadership position after my father.

He had formed this platform seven or eight years previously and I came in, not quite like a bull in a china shop, but with ideas for technology and processes that I wanted to introduce and a lot of energy and a desire to do my Dad proud. We had to get to grips with how to communicate with each other, it’s not the same as sitting round the family dinner table!

Can you tell us what a typical week at Karan Capital is like for you?

I spend two or three days in our central London office. Here, I typically have meetings with our team, reviewing existing investments. There are also meetings with entrepreneurs or prospective investments, these can be pitches or subsequent meetings where we get to know them, look under the hood of their businesses and understand what their business is about. This is very rewarding,

be good at them, be it sports, any extracurricular activity or your studies. Through this you meet different people and communicate with them as part of a team, that’s where it all starts.

Then you go to university and meet people from different places. I realised that if you can connect with anyone it’s a great starting point and you’re at an advantage. I tried all the sports when I was at school and that certainly helped. Obviously, medicine didn’t hurt because you talk to many patients about tricky topics and learn how to explain things clearly. You also teach those more who are more junior whilst learning from the people above. Communication is one of the key skills I have used from medicine to now.

meeting new people from different areas and seeing them do things that I couldn’t envisage especially in adopting technology and AI. On other days I work from home where there’s a lot of reviewing and reading. I have become much better at taking some downtime. I have a four-year-old and a two-year-old.

There is more to life than just a career.

What do you most enjoy in your work?

Meeting new people who have put energy and time into what they’re working on. I am lucky to be in a position where I can be a part of their journey as an investor or sometimes an advisor, that’s hands down why I love what I do and what I find the most rewarding part of it.

What advice would you give to students on how to become an entrepreneur?

How do you manage your work and your family life?

It’s about having a great team at work and at home. I have a really supportive wife who understands, and I surround myself with people, who have the same values and mutual respect for what we do.

Balance and managing time is always a work in progress but you get better at it.

You manage projects around the globe, do countries have different requirements?

Every country may have a requirement in terms of how they operate, laws and compliances so take advice from the best people.

In terms of how to interact with people, it all boils down to communication skills and putting effort and time in, so use technology, speak with people, connect your team, be honest, align your expectations. It goes back to my point on values as well. You can’t treat a set of people in the UK separately to people in other countries, everyone is part of your team.

Do you think your skill of talking to people has developed with your experience in business or is it something you always had?

One of the things that schools like Caterham do (I’m not getting paid to say this by the way!) is provide you with options to try lots of things.

It provides a safe space where you can try things and not necessarily

Entrepreneurship is about trying different things and having grit and determination to try and see that through.

I want to emphasise that this word, ‘entrepreneur’ is heavily used and makes people think that they’ve got to come up with a completely novel idea that’s going to change the world. That’s great for the people it works for but there’s all sorts of entrepreneurs that you don’t hear about.

Entrepreneurship is about trying different things and having grit and determination to try and see that through. It might be doing something completely new or it may be bringing two or three things together that have not been brought together before.

At school I would say do things to spark your curiosity, use the internet, experiment with new technologies like AI, it will help you come up with new ideas or questions you haven’t thought of before.

I cannot underplay the role of interpersonal skills. Leverage the relationships and contacts that the School community can connect you with to gain an informed picture of what you are interested in. Sometimes we jump to assumptions and assumptions are the real risk point of anything, the less you assume the more you know!

Don’t be scared of asking. If you know a friend’s parent is in a space you are interested in don’t be shy to ask to speak to them. When you get that opportunity be organised and prepared, have a proper list of 

questions. Ask them what this career is going to look like in twenty years’ time and where they think the pitfalls of their industry are. Be curious, be hungry, be organised and cherish and respect the opportunity you get when you meet people.

Entrepreneurs are willing to keep on asking, willing to change. Many planning resources are free, you don’t have to a leap to do something and can map out in your head, ‘if I do this, that will happen, if I do that then that will happen’. I always run things past people who are cleverer than me so don’t fear discussing your plan with your parents or their friends or someone you know who can advise you. Surround yourself with good people.

By researching, planning and talking you will map out what you like, or not, and what you want to do.

I cannot underplay the role of interpersonal skills.

Leverage the relationships and contacts that the School community can connect you with to gain an informed picture of what you are interested in.

How would you advise current students to go about getting into medicine? How did you go about it?

I learnt a lot of things from medicine and do not regret it. If I were speaking to my 16 old self I would say, ‘Have you met with enough doctors and asked them what their career look like in 20 years’ time in the UK and abroad? What do they enjoy and don’t enjoy?

Whatever you decide to do, planning is everything and it’s free to do – be curious, ask around and plan.

Would you say that the people you surrounded yourself with at Caterham influenced your path?

You have heard pitches from many businesses. What should a business have for you to make an investment in them?

I’m in regular contact with three people from Caterham. They didn’t mould the career path I chose but those people have not changed in who they are from a personality and values perspective and I’m the same.

You attract people who you are like and that’s probably why I’ve maintained those relationships.

There are different people in your life who nudge you in different directions, so university friends, school friends, work colleagues they all shape who you are.

If someone is to pitch they need to be organised and know what they are talking about. Often you are investing in the people as much as investing in the idea. Whether the pitch is in person, or online it’s about building a connection with that person.

If you feel their passion for their project and what they’ve said makes sense you know that when they face challenges that passion will allow them to keep going. I’m in a privileged position where I can pick who I want to work with. Their idea has to be half decent and the financial model needs to stack up but it boils down to the person.

What is your favourite memory from Caterham?

How much weight do you put on the person versus the idea?

For start-ups which are pre-profit, even pre-revenue, you typically talk to the founders and are relying on their ability to execute their plan.

I’ll often get other people involved to help evaluate and see their track record. These examples depend more heavily on the person than the business.

For an established business looking for investment to make acquisitions, hire more people or enable quicker growth, you do a lot of work on the business, the reason being that the valuation on

those companies is often higher because they have already proven their model. You still look into the people because they are ultimately driving the plan.

I played a lot of sports; I’m not saying I was good at any of them but I will probably say my favourite memory was in House cricket. I was in Ridgefield and we often won this competition. One year, a chap in the year above managed to bowl a sixteen ball over, people were on the floor in stitches, he had to be asked by the umpire to stop bowling.

How do you think Caterham influenced you towards your career path and you as a person?

Caterham has been a pretty big influence on me, just from putting myself out there and finding it a safe place to try different things, I was empowered to try things and felt comfortable doing that. Also speaking to people and not being

shy to ask, that’s helped me not just in my career but in general life too.

Caterham was really influential, and I have very fond memories of it.

How would you advise students to use these opportunities to build themselves up as people?

16–18 is a confusing time when you are making what seem like huge decisions.

The key is to be curious, plan and try to know as much as you can to make an informed decision.

School is a great time to investigate different career paths and ask questions. Whatever decision you make you will learn from it. You may carry on in that direction or change direction. There isn’t a wrong decision. My biggest take home point is know who you are, what you like and don’t like and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. 

COVID HEROES Return for Moncreiff Jones Society Christmas Science Lecture Isabel Singleton, President of Moncrieff Jones Society 2022/23

We had the honour of welcoming to school Old Caterhamian Professor Nick Hart and current Caterham parent Dr. Suneil Ramessur for the 2022 Moncreiff Jones Christmas lecture.

Both were heavily involved with leading the COVID-19 response at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. OC Professor Hart received national acclaim when then Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife named their son in honour of Nick, who treated Mr Johnson when he fell critically ill with COVID-19.

he Christmas talk was entitled “When the Clapping Stops” and discussed what really happened during the pandemic and the ramifications it has had on healthcare now. Too often healthcare news and information about the NHS is masked by what the media wants us to see, so it was truly eye-opening to hear from doctors who witnessed the pandemic first hand. It was also fascinating to hear a combination of professional and personal insights to the journey through the pandemic – including a desperate ring round of personal contacts to help garner vital PPE.

As medical director of the heart, lung and critical care group, Professor. Hart directed the critical care response for the hospitals’ 1,300 patients. In the lecture he talked about how he used data science to facilitate this, and to predict the course of the pandemic.

As the deputy clinical lead to theatres, anaesthetics and perioperative medicine, Dr. Ramessur was on the COVID-19 tactical team, where he helped to design the anaesthetics response to the pandemic, as well as being directly involved in frontline clinical care. He talked of the additional precautions the anaesthetists had to take in terms of PPE to ensure staff

safety. With an increase in need for patients to be put on ventilators, a huge burden of the pandemic fell onto the anaesthetics team.

The team took five main interventions to ensure the best chances of recovery for COVID-19 patients.

They made sure patients had a regulated fluid balance and a safe oxygen saturation. Treatments included antiviral medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and anticoagulants.

Although the general population has come out the other side of the pandemic, this isn’t necessarily the case for healthcare professionals for whom the impact has a greater and longer

legacy. Other health needs were neglected in the summit of it all, and now the NHS is faced with a huge backlog, forced into taking extreme measures like the HIT approach in the anaesthetic’s department.

Moreover, this is all being carried out by an already physically and mentally exhausted workforce.

The talk was truly inspiring as we listened to two incredibly selfless and dedicated individuals reflect on their own experiences during the pandemic, and how much they sacrificed to provide outstanding care for those who needed it most in the nation’s hour of need. 

Matthew Beesley

Matthew Beesley (OC 1994) is the Chief Executive of Jupiter Asset Management. Matthew was interviewed

by Old Caterhamians Christian and Michael, who were keen to find out more about his career path post Caterham and the wider societal side of the Asset Management profession.

Christian: What does your day-today life look like at Jupiter Asset Management?

Asset Management is about making investment decisions on behalf of people who have given us their money to manage. These could be people off the street, ‘retail clients’ who want to build their money up for a pension for example. Clients can also be pension funds, companies or charities. They all want to grow or protect their money. We achieve this for them by investing in a variety of assets.

At Jupiter our asset is the talented and skilled people who are making the investment decisions. Most of my job is managing these people whilst also engaging with our clients and making sure that the two work together harmoniously.

Michael: How does Asset Management help people in their day-to-day lives, maybe without them realising?

We all work hard and are trying to save for our retirement and also things like holidays. Companies and charities that we work with also have money that they want to grow over time. A school for example, might have bursary or scholarship funds that need to grow to continue to fund their bursary and scholarship places.

Rather than leave that money on deposit in the bank they prefer to do something with that money that’s more productive and useful.

One thing that people don’t realise is what a worthy industry this can be.

It is a privilege for someone to give us their money to manage. We can 

ensure that their money goes to the right kinds of companies, doing the right kinds of things. For example, if there are companies who are not thinking about environmental commitments, we can move money away from them and towards companies working more sustainably. So we can help drive good behaviours in society.

Christian: Since leaving Caterham in 1994 how did your studies and career lead you to being CEO of an Asset Management company at such a young age?

I’m not sure it feels like such a young age, and leaving Caterham feels like a long time ago! Asset Management is an interesting industry that can be entered by young people in a variety of ways, it’s not like wanting to be a doctor where you naturally study medicine.

Career options don’t necessarily need to be narrowed down too soon. Being able to keep an open mind and get an educated mind is sometimes going to be good enough in terms of setting you up for that future role.

What hopefully makes me good at my job is that before I became a Chief Executive, I was a Fund Manager myself.

Crucial to being a Fund Manager is being able to analyse events, companies, and opportunities, and to understand the risk and reward of investment decisions.

There are so many subjects that can help this. It’s important to have a mathematical brain although I didn’t study Maths.

I am making decisions in the economic environment, but I didn’t study Economics either. I studied English, History and Music at Caterham, and they gave me an understanding of analysis in different ways. I had a fascination with current affairs and the changing nature of the world which led me to study Politics and Modern History at Manchester University.

If we think about these subjects, it’s not obvious where they will lead but they showed that I have an educated mind, and that I understood the interlink between them.

It’s tricky in Sixth Form where you are thinking about how A levels progress to a degree and in turn into a job because in so many jobs the link isn’t immediately clear. How I approached it was I knew I wanted to do something financially based and around stock markets as I was interested in current affairs, and I was good at analysing and understanding

things. I applied for a range of jobs across Financial Services and it was the Fund Management sector which was most interested in employing me, which I took as a sign!

Michael: What advice would you give to your younger self?

My advice to my younger self – and indeed to my older self – is to ‘be curious’ and ask why things are the way they are.

One of the great privileges of being a Fund Manager, especially if you are investing in companies, is that you get to meet and interview the business leaders of some of the world’s largest companies in key industries. You get a ringside seat and can ask them questions about their industry and company strategy. The questions of ‘why’ and ‘how’ are vastly underestimated in terms of their importance. I learnt quite early on in my investment career, and I still see it now, the importance of asking ‘why’.

Don’t assume that people understand everything, and don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand everything. Most of the best entrepreneurs and innovators challenge the status quo.

If we think about the very best innovators, they are all people who have questioned the way in which we do things and found an alternative. That all comes from asking ‘why’.

Michael: What influence did your experience at Caterham have on who you are today? What is your favourite memory from school?

I learnt quite early on in my investment career, and I still see it now, the importance of asking ‘why’ …

I loved my school years. When I was at Caterham, I threw myself into everything.

I am not particularly brilliant at any one thing but I was OK at quite a few things.

I played football, rugby and cricket and took part in the orchestra, the choir, plays and the debating society. I loved the variety of what I could do at school and these things made me the person I am. The great benefit of being at a school like Caterham is the vast range of activities and opportunities in front of you. Trying these things out, trying them for size, seeing if they fit is an utter privilege. When I look back at Caterham I think of this whirlwind of activity, enjoying all of it and being very happy learning. In my career today, no day is the same, the stock markets go up or down, things happen that impact the value of assets. Every day is different. Having a rich array of opportunities and experiences ahead of you is a wonderful privilege.

for everybody it’s that it’s never too soon to start saving for retirement, even the smallest amount invested today will compound and grow over time. £100 invested today might grow by 5% over the year giving £105 to invest the following year, and that could grow by another 5% and so on every year. The power of compounding is vital and the earlier you start investing the better, even a small amount makes a difference. It is hard to convey this to a younger generation in a challenging economic environment.

Christian: I’ve read that Jupiter Asset Management is committed to diversity and inclusion as well as ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance).

Can you tell us about this?

Financial Services has been a very male dominated sector. It has not been great at attracting and retaining talent from a broad array of backgrounds. This is clearly a problem and something that I am very focussed on trying to change.

Asset Management clients are from the broad population, and it is important for us to be a representation of them. I firmly believe, and there’s evidence to prove this, that we generate better outcomes for clients by being more diverse. For example, if we are running a global fund investing in companies from around the world, we will do better having people from different countries and backgrounds to analyse, find and understand those investment opportunities.

At Jupiter, we spend a lot of time trying to ensure the business is an attractive place to work for female talent, and talent from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. A stumbling block is that Asset Management is not widely understood. I spend a lot of time communicating what Asset Management is and the good that we do. There is a lot of competition and trying to attract top talent takes time, but we have been doing this with both new graduates and senior roles.

Christian: Do you think Jupiter’s diversity and inclusion policy will help prepare for that shift in generational wealth as you can offer different perspectives for both new and existing clients?

That’s exactly right. There is so much evidence to say that diversity leads to better outcomes, we want more people with different perspectives to contribute to our industry. If decision makers all have the same life experience, education and background, you are more likely to have a one-dimensional conversation and perspective. Having a rich tapestry of experience, background, knowledge, and understanding is likely to lead to a more diverse and richer set of inputs and outputs. Diversity is important on so many levels.

Michael: What do you think is the biggest challenge the Asset Management industry is facing in this inflationary environment?

Christian: How does Jupiter plan to position for the anticipated shift of generational wealth due to our aging population?

Typically, older people want to invest.

And eventually, they switch from investing to spending that investment. We need to replace these clients by attracting younger people who may not have as much to invest today but will have in the future.

The challenge is that younger people want to invest in different ways to older people. Technology has played a massive role here. If you wanted to invest in a fund thirty or forty years ago you would complete a form from a newspaper and send it off in an envelope to be processed.

Today investment can be virtually instantaneous from a mobile device.

We must stay relevant and appropriate for the older generation, who are still the largest portion of the Asset Management industry’s client base, whilst attracting new investors who may not understand the benefit of starting to invest early.

I don’t think it’s one thing, there are many. Convincing people that saving is important is hard in a challenging economic environment and cost-of-living crisis. There are those who cannot afford to put on the heating let alone put money aside for retirement, but every year’s delay makes it harder to fund retirement when it comes, meaning people work longer. I’m talking about individuals as it’s an easy way of framing this challenge but looking at companies, they also need to be balancing the needs for today with those of tomorrow.

Inflation is a real problem. If you have £100 on deposit in the bank, earning 4% interest, at the end of the year you have £104. If your costs are £100 you have sufficient funds to meet them. If inflation is at 10% though, like a year ago, your costs will be £110, your money on deposit won’t cover your costs and you will be minus £6. Unless you do something actively with your money, 

the purchasing power of your money in real terms is worth less than it would have been at the start of the period.

Inflation is really damaging for society because it erodes savings, this is why banks and governments work so hard to contain it. That’s where our industry hopefully plays a role, providing solutions which allow clients to grow their money in line with or ideally better than inflation.

Things go up and down but hopefully over time we can provide solutions that keep pace with or outperform inflation.

When inflation’s lower its less of a risk and challenge. The issue in this inflationary environment is cost challenges meaning there is less money available to invest.

It is deeply ironic, but it is even more important to invest in inflationary environments because ‘putting money under the mattress’ leaves people worse off in real terms.

If there’s one piece of important advice for everybody it’s that it’s never too soon to start saving for retirement.

Christian: The markets have been idiosyncratic in recent years. Do you have ways to prepare and negate unexpected market challenges?

What’s certain is that no one knows what will happen in the future. As professional money managers our job is to navigate through what might be ahead. In Asset Management we talk about ‘risk adjusted reward’, making decisions using the balance of probabilities. We also think about diversification, never betting on one thing. In investing, you never want to invest in just one company or have all of your money just inside the UK. If you are going to buy crypto currency make sure that is not the only thing you invest in. No matter how high your conviction or belief in something always consider that you may be wrong. Balancing risk and reward and diversifying your bets are also interesting ways to think about life generally.

Michael: If someone my age wanted to get into the Financial Services industry what qualities should they have to secure a job or apprenticeship?

It’s about being analytical; about understanding where we are today and what might happen in the future. It’s about being curious, understanding why we are where we are and why we might be somewhere different in the future.

Communication is important, if people are going to trust you with their money they want to understand what you’re going to do with it. This is rarely a job for individuals, rarely a job that you can do by yourself. Asset Management is a team sport requiring a lot of people to work together, using their different skills for the benefit of a client outcome. An ability to recognise that you will be good at some things and less good at others will help you interact effectively with your colleagues around you. This is where playing team sports is so helpful, it introduces you to the benefit of other people on a team. Financial Services over the years has attracted lots of really smart people and that’s what keeps me going every day, I am privileged that I get the chance to work with really talented people.

Michael: Now it’s time to get into the important stuff! I read that you love West End musicals, so I wanted to ask which is your favourite and why?

Christian: Considering you are already CEO at such a fantastic firm what continues to drive and motivate you?

Asset Management is about managing people and I spend my time doing that, engaging with people, communicating with stakeholders. The thing that gets me most excited, that I am always trying to do and that I love seeing, is people being the best they can be.

It’s a wonderful privilege to lead a public company and manage Jupiter’s 500 people. I love engaging with people, giving them a chance to learn new skills and develop. That’s the thing that keeps me most motivated, the ability to hopefully influence not just good outcomes for clients but also see the people I work with develop and grow.

This links back to Caterham. I performed in musicals, did Music A level, played the piano and flute and sang in choirs. My son is madly into sport which gives me a great opportunity to watch sport with him and my daughter loves Drama and musicals so we watch musicals together. If I were to measure musicals by the ones I have seen most my favourite would have to be Les Misérables, I have seen it live five times.

The music is amazing and it’s an epic story, about a guy who finds himself in a really difficult position and works hard to make a positive impact on the world despite his tough starting point.

In musicals generally I love the emotion, the ups and downs, and I love music anyway, it takes me to a happy place. 

The Development Report 2024 Emma Collings, Director of Development

Since our previous Development update, we have had more than a few reasons for excitement within the department

e held our second Telethon at Easter in 2023 to support our partnership projects and Transformational Bursary programme, a major fundraising event in which 12 recent leavers from the school called up members of our school community. It was a great success, with over £100,000 raised! Following the Telethon we published our very first Donor Impact Report and held a Supporters Summer drinks. Both of which will be a regular occurrence from now on!

This year we said goodbye to Tamzin Kerslake, our previous Development Officer. Ever the active member in school life, Tamzin has moved on to pastures new and we wish her all the best. Excitingly, we have welcomed Tom Mason to the department. Tom is an Old Caterhamian himself who has hit the ground running in Development and has played an instrumental role in organising our events this year.

Internationally, Caterham’s presence is stronger than ever.

Last September saw our first overseas CaterhamConnected Insight Evening take place in Hong Kong, with the theme of Innovating Futures. Last October we held a reunion for Old Cats in Kuala Lumpur too at the at the iconic Royal Selangor Club. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Old Caterhamians’ Association for their support for our CaterhamConnected programme of events and the many other alumni sports and social events we hold during the year. Their support is invaluable in bringing our alumni community together. I would also like to extend my thanks to the wonderful Parents Association at Caterham who work tirelessly to raise funds for good causes.

Last November we held a special dinner to celebrate 100 years of rugby being played at Caterham. This event was attended by alumni and sports staff from different generations and held in the Wilberforce Hall. Rugby team photos spanning the 100 years were brought together for the very first time especially for the event, and an auction was held in aid of our Transformational Bursary programme.

In November, we once again held a lunch for our John Townsend Society members, our legator appreciation group, as part of Remembrance Sunday.

We have recently held our second ever Giving Day – it was wonderful to see the school community come together to celebrate what makes Caterham such a special place and to #CreateABuzz! Thank you to everyone who has supported us in the past year – whether that be parents, Old Caterhamians or friends of the school. Almost every area of the School community is involved in our Partnership programme including pupils, parents and staff. Key to the programme is the East Surrey Learning Partnership, a group of independent and state-maintained schools working together strategically and practically to advance children’s learning. The ESLP was founded by Caterham and has grown to include eight schools in the group who plan, problem solve and learn from each other as equal partners.

in Year 5 in primary schools who might have the ability but not the means or preparation to apply for selective schools, whereas other programmes support entire year groups such as the weekly practical science sessions provided for Year 5 children attending ESLP primary schools. Over a three-week cycle, children engage in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics lessons with a focus on using scientific apparatus and learning key skills such as measurement and data presentation.

Since its inception in 2021, the programme has involved 245 children.

Our Sixth Form lead reading groups for students of ESLP schools to encourage reading and improve pupils’ engagement with books.

And a Sixth Form led weekly drama club for Year 5 and 6 pupils from St John’s Primary culminates twice a year in a performance for parents and teachers.

Beyond the ESLP, we support pupils from Clifton Hill School (a Surrey school for young people with severe and profound learning difficulties and autism). Their pupils come to our Sports Hall every Friday to participate in sporting activities and games planned and carried out by our Sixth Form. In the summer term our pupils organise the Clifton Hill sports days here at Caterham and parents and carers are invited to watch.

TOM MASON (OC 2005 – 2019)

I have relished the opportunity to re-enter the Caterham community, taking up the role of Development Officer in January 2024. After completing my A-Levels at Caterham in Spanish, Psychology, and Latin, I went onto Lancaster University to read Linguistics.

Ranked 9th in the country when I went, as well as 2nd in the country for my subject area – Lancaster was the clear choice from day one. I spent three happy years completing my undergraduate degree (despite COVID’s best attempts!), achieving a 2:1 with minors in Film and Spanish. During this time, I also undertook

various roles on my university college’s Junior Common Room – from Visual Media and Communications to Vice-President.

I elected to stay at Lancaster for a further year to complete my master’s degree in Intercultural Communication, an emerging linguistic discipline that combines linguistics with elements of sociology and psychology. I completed my dissertation on the perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on intercultural competence among students, for which I received a merit – driving me to a merit overall in my postgraduate studies. I graduated in December 2023 and started at Caterham two weeks later… talk about a quick turnaround!

My role as Development Officer is hugely multifaceted and no two days are the same. One minute I could be writing donor correspondence, the next – setting up a large-scale event for the following afternoon, the next – completing some of the financial side of the monthly donations we receive at the school! The skills I developed during my time working and studying at university have equipped me to this fast-paced style of work and I’m incredibly grateful I have the chance to begin my career somewhere where I have such a personal history. My time at Caterham was one that I treasure dearly, one which allowed me to make friends for life and attend such a stellar university.

My colleagues however (formerly teachers) are still getting used to me calling them by their first names!

MEGAN DENTON (OC 2015 – 2022)

It would be strange to say I returned to Caterham, seeing as I never really left! Having done my A-Levels in the summer of 2022 I decided to take a gap year rather than head straight to university.

I’ve been so lucky to be able to be involved in a variety of areas across the school. From the Prep School to the U12-D lacrosse team to the Library, I can truly say I’ve made the most of this year.

My favourite moments at school, especially as I got older, were spent on the lacrosse pitch so it’s been really rewarding to see the First Years start their love of lacrosse with enthusiasm and commitment regardless of what team they played for. Alongside this, the CCF team kindly allowed me to rejoin in a volunteer capacity, helping on Wednesday nights and with weekend activities. It was amazing to be involved in something I loved as a pupil. I really appreciate the time I’ve spent at Caterham both this year and as a pupil, it’s taught me so many valuable skills I’ll take with me to whatever the future brings.

Returning to Caterham School in the role of Caterham Connected Officer (CCO) marks a poignant milestone in my journey, one that has come full circle since my days as a student, which commenced back in the Pre-Prep in 1998.

Having walked the corridors as a student over two decades ago, I bring with me a wealth of memories and experiences that fuel my passion for creating connections among alumni spanning over the generations.

As the CCO, I am tasked with developing a vibrant and engaged alumni community, one that celebrates our shared heritage and contributes to the continued growth and success of the school. Through reunions, networking events, and collaborative initiatives, I seek to reignite the flame of friendship among alumni, bridging the gap between past and present. My role also includes working alongside the Parents Association to organise events spanning from school fayres, fireworks night and The Summer Ball.

It is great to see so many of my previous teachers still here educating the next generation of alumni, however it was difficult at first to remember using their first names after so many years of Mr and Mrs. I am excited to be back in such a sociable and busy workspace after four years of working from home.

I look forward to seeing what my future holds being back at Caterham School.

I left Caterham with the class of 2018 and headed to Durham to read Liberal Arts with an emphasis on English. I had known for a long time that I wanted to be a teacher and was already thinking about different pathways into this career, having been so inspired by my teachers during my time at school.

While I was living and teaching in France after university, I received a call from Caterham with an opening in one of the very departments that had sparked my love of learning and had encouraged me into my chosen career: the English department!

Now I am so enjoying the chance to work with the amazing staff team at Caterham, learning directly from the teachers who had such an impact on me growing up. Getting involved in Dance and netball coaching adds so much to my new experience of school and I have loved being able to choose texts to teach to my classes while getting to know the new generation of Caterham students.

Weddings Congratulations to the following Old Cats … q Joe Long (OC 2013) married Hannah Shopland (OC 2014) in Betchworth, Surrey on 13 July 2024 after being together for 9 years.

Joe and Hannah met at school and started dating at University. Numerous OCs were in attendance and even made up the majority of the bridal party!

 Craig Moore (OC 2010 and former Teacher) married Megan Armitage (OC 2011 and former Head Girl) on 5 August 2023 in Lewes, East Sussex. Their wedding day was very enjoyable for all with over 25 per cent of the guests being former staff or OCs!

 Katherine Penney (OC 2014) and Jack Williams (OC 2014) were married at Farnham Castle on 22 June 2024. Fellow Old Cats in attendance at the wedding included Jasper Moore and Will Rady (who were joint best men) Olivia Samuel (Maid of Honour) and Patrick Colquitt, Ruari Bride, Marcus Wilson, Tom Alexander, Jayson Pepper, Matt Hill and Anna Tulchinskaya-Hill.

q Martha Barber (OC 2010) married James Waudby, of HolmeOn-Spalding-Moor, East Yorkshire on the 19 August 2023. James, a Software Developer, and Martha, a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, met when they were living and working in Yorkshire.

Martha is an Officer in the RAF Section of the CCF at Caterham.

They were married at St Mary’s Church, Caterham, the fourth generation (at least) of Martha’s family to do so. During the service, the organ was played by Jeremy Lloyd (OC 2003–2010). They were joined by a mixture of former students, former staff and current staff from Eothen and Caterham. It is estimated that those present had over 300 years of combined involvement with the school.

 Ryan Dale (OC 2014) married Alannah Hoban (OC 2015) in Brighton on 12 July 2024 after exactly 12 years of dating.

Former Chaplain and Head of Philosophy & Theology Dr. Rick Mearkle (2000-2017) kindly officiated their ceremony. A touching way to commemorate where they met at school in 2011. Several OCs attended the celebrations as well as their one year old son, Rudy.

 Hannah Pearson (OC 2016) married Callum Thompson (OC 2015) on the 27 April 2024. The ceremony was at Ide Hill Church and the reception was at Hever Castle.

 Lisa Mill (OC 2011) married Tom Redfern on 8 October, at Wrenbury Hall, Nantwich. Many Old Cats attended such as Craig Moore, Bethany Hutchings, Emma Houlden, Hollie Coleman, Jess Puntan, Megan Armitage, Matt Mill and they were also joined by Rob Salem (Mr Salem).

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON PENULTIMATE YEAR

By Alex Richings (OC 2021) WHY? I chose to study biological sciences at university because of how much I enjoyed biology throughout school. It made sense to me to study a subject I knew I enjoyed and one that I would be happy to dedicate my time to. My teachers in Sixth Form had a big part to play in exposing me to areas of biology beyond the syllabus which also drew me to wanting to study the subject further.

WHERE? I am currently studying at Imperial College London.

I chose to study here because of its international reputation for science and because of its great location in London. I also watched some online lectures by the university during lockdown which helped me to see what studying here would be like.

ANY CLUBS/SOCIETIES? In my first year I tried out a lot of clubs and societies from badminton to water polo to dodgeball to hip hop and breakdancing. Whilst I don’t go to any of these clubs anymore, it was through a friend at dance that I found out about the parkour, free running and gymnastics society which I have now been attending twice a week for the past eight months. I think this shows how important it is to not get discouraged if you don’t find a club or society for you straight away because by trying something new, you can discover new interests. They are also great for meeting new people, both on other courses and in different year groups. For me personally, gymnastics has also allowed me to meet a lot of people at UCL because we do joint training sessions.

YOUR ADVICE? There are lot of changes when you go from school to university which can make it hard to settle in. The most important thing to remember is that everyone around you is in the same position so I encourage you to reach

out to the people around you, not just if you need help but also so you can meet new people. Again, meeting new people can be challenging, particularly if you haven’t had to do so since starting school. Something as simple as smiling at someone in the corridor or introducing yourself to someone you see regularly can make it a lot easier to connect with others.

One of the things I found hardest adjusting to was the way things are taught at university. You have to get used to the shift from lessons to lectures which may require you to rethink how you have learnt in the past.

It can take a while for you to find a system that works for you but that’s really the whole point of first year: trying new things. You also have to get used to different expectations in your work which can be overwhelming if you don’t get marks as high as you did at school. Marking criteria is widely available so you can check what is expected before completing an assignment, but it is also important to make an effort to reflect on your feedback because you are expected to be more independent than at school.

It is also important to see university as an opportunity.

As much as it’s a place to study and work hard, it is also a place where you will make a lot of memories. You will only spend a few years here and so I encourage you to take every chance you can. I can’t quite believe that this time next year I will have finished my degree, especially since the start of first year feels like yesterday.

WHAT NEXT? I don’t feel like I am quite ready to move on from science yet and am currently thinking about doing a master’s degree in public health or epidemiology. If I do go down this path, I may consider doing a PhD but I think it’s too early to say. 

EARTH SCIENCES AT DURHAM UNIVERSITY

Specialising in Geology, Climate Science and Environmental Management

WHY? From my very first days at Caterham, I was captivated

by Geography—especially Physical Geography.

As I progressed through school, this initial fascination deepened. I found myself drawn to the complexities hidden within subjects that at first glance seemed straightforward. This growing passion made choosing Geology as my degree an easy decision. It offered a unique opportunity to merge the scientific and analytical aspects of Geography, perfectly aligning with my interests.

University expanded my horizons far beyond what I had imagined. Earth Sciences revealed itself to be an incredibly diverse field, ranging from the mathematical modelling of avalanches to reconstructing tectonic events from 4 billion years ago, and even pioneering research into the management of coal mining waste.

These experiences constantly surprised and challenged me, taking me in directions I hadn’t anticipated.

In my opinion, education isn’t just about earning a certificate – it’s about fuelling curiosity and building skills that will serve you, no matter where your career path leads. For me, Earth Sciences is particularly meaningful because of its relevance to climate modelling. Just as history teaches us to learn from the past, understanding Earth’s history is vital for making informed decisions about the planet’s future. Climate science will undoubtedly play an increasingly pivotal role in shaping our world, making Earth Sciences a field worth exploring for anyone with a curiosity about the planet and its processes.

WHERE? I had the privilege of studying at Durham University, and my time there was nothing short of fantastic.

From the moment I visited, I knew Durham was the right place for me. The city’s friendly atmosphere and vibrant buzz made it feel like home. Although Durham is smaller than many other university cities,

that turned out to be one of its greatest strengths – you’d often bump into friends, and everything was within walking distance.

Another thing I loved about Durham was how easy it was to escape the city and immerse myself in the surrounding countryside. It gave me the chance to explore a completely different part of the country, which was an adventure in itself.

One piece of advice I’d offer to anyone choosing a university is to consider going somewhere a bit further from home. It’s a brilliant opportunity for personal growth and independence. Also, think carefully about what kind of university experience you’re looking for.

Larger cities like Manchester or Birmingham offer a different vibe compared to smaller towns or campus universities like Durham. Each has its unique appeal.

Whatever you decide, I highly recommend visiting friends at other universities to experience their environments first-hand. It’s a great way to see different parts of the country and understand the variety of student experiences out there!

ANY CLUBS/SOCIETIES? When I first started at Durham, I was overwhelmed by the sheer variety of clubs and societies available – it felt like there was almost too much choice! My advice to any fresher is simple: try as much as you can. University is a unique opportunity to explore new interests, revisit old ones, and discover what truly excites you.

For me, joining the hillwalking society (DUHWS) was a game-changer. Having enjoyed the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Caterham, I was eager to spend more time in the mountains, and this society offered the perfect opportunity. University societies are unlike school clubs – they’re run by students for students and often feel like independent organisations. Being part of them is not only enjoyable but also a valuable learning experience in its own right.

Another passion I rediscovered at university was long-distance running. While I’d dabbled in running at Caterham, it was at Durham that I connected with like-minded friends who shared my enthusiasm for covering long distances. This sport has pushed me to push my limits, and I’ve now completed three ultramarathons – experiences that have challenged me more than I ever imagined and proved equally rewarding.

University is about more than just academics; it’s a chance to grow, try new things, and explore the world outside of leavy Surrey. So, don’t be afraid to dive in and embrace all the opportunities that come your way!

YOUR ADVICE? My first piece of advice is not to worry too much about where your friends are going. The truth is, wherever you go, you’ll make new friends – and with a bit of effort, you can maintain strong connections with your schoolmates as well. University is a time of new beginnings, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to build lasting relationships.

I’d also encourage you to study something you’re truly passionate about. In my experience, when you genuinely enjoy a subject, you’re far more likely to excel at it.

Choosing a course that excites you will make your time at university both more rewarding and more fulfilling.

AFTER YOUR DEGREE? After graduating, I began my career at an engineering firm where I worked for 18 months. My journey with the company started earlier, during a summer internship where I applied the climate modelling skills I developed at university to create carbon calculators for energy projects.

The experience was so rewarding that I was invited back the following summer, this time in a full-time role.

Working at the cutting edge of engineering, digital solutions, and climate-based decision-making was incredibly exciting. However, I quickly learned that the two most valuable workplace skills are problem-solving and effective communication. In my view, Caterham

does an excellent job of fostering these skills. While a strong academic foundation is essential, the skills you gain through extracurricular activities – like CCF, sports, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award – are just as important for thriving in the workplace.

After my time at the engineering firm, I transitioned to a consultancy role in the North-East. Careers rarely follow a straight line, and that’s okay. Some people prefer to have their paths meticulously planned out, but it’s equally valid to embrace a more flexible, “squiggly” route. In my current role, I’ve been given new opportunities to build fresh skills and continue learning, which is something I’ve come to value deeply. 

FINANCE, ACCOUNTING AND MANAGEMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

WHY? From a young age, I recognized the tremendous power that comes with understanding the global economy.

However, I found myself in a predicament where I lacked connections in the industry and lacked role models to guide me. This inspired me to become a role model myself, with the goal of promoting financial literacy.

The drive to succeed has always burned within me, as growing up with limited resources motivated me to excel academically and gain a deeper understanding of wealth accumulation and distribution.

Furthermore, I strongly believe that financial markets serve as a cornerstone of global stability. Being able to comprehend and leverage these concepts to improve one's financial situation greatly intrigued me. However, I didn't want to limit myself to a single subject. By pursuing studies in finance, accounting, and management, I gained exposure to various sectors within the financial services industry, allowing me to choose a career path that best suited my interests and aspirations.

WHERE? University of Nottingham. Nottingham struck me as a smaller version of London, exuding a vibrant and contagious energy. The city is culturally diverse, and the locals are welcoming. Situated in the East Midlands, it provided the perfect balance of independence and proximity to London when necessary. As a dedicated student athlete, I was thrilled by the state-of-the-art performance sport facilities available, fostering a culture of excellence in both academics and sports.

Academically, the university's reputation attracted me, particularly the Nottingham Business School, which holds the esteemed "triple crown" accreditation from AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS – the most influential accrediting organizations. This accreditation played a significant role in my decision to study here. I firmly believe that graduates from the University of Nottingham are highly sought after in the job market.

ANY CLUBS/SOCIETIES? As an avid rugby player, I had the privilege of representing both the University 1XV and 2nd XV teams.

Being part of such a close-knit and expansive group greatly enriched my university experience. Surprisingly, it provided me with a sense of identity and a supportive community with whom I could confide. Throughout our three years together, we actively advocated for inclusivity and diversity in sports, particularly within the LGBTQA+ community.

Additionally, I actively participated in the Nottingham Economics and Finance Society, which welcomes individuals from all backgrounds. This society afforded me the opportunity to attend seminars featuring esteemed leaders in the financial industry, network with professionals, and engage in mock investment programs.

YOUR ADVICE? Be proactive and forward-thinking when applying to universities. It's natural to feel uncertain about your future career path, but that's okay. The key is to find a field that truly ignites your passion. When faced with challenges, your love for the subject will provide the necessary discipline. Take the time to research different career opportunities and make an informed decision based on what suits your circumstances best.

AFTER MY DEGREE After graduating from university in the summer of 2022, I had the fortunate opportunity to intern at a RE Private Debt Fund. I believe internships are essential, depending on one's career path, as they provide real-world exposure and help develop crucial skills needed to stand out in a competitive job market. Successful interns often receive full-time job offers based on their performance during the internship.

Initially, transitioning from undergraduate studies to Private Debt seemed daunting. However, I found that being proactive, asking questions, and maintaining a willingness to learn were key. At the conclusion of my internship, I was offered a permanent position, and I am thrilled about the potential for growth in this field.

For those considering internships, I recommend starting the application process as early as possible.

Internship opportunities are highly competitive, so be on the lookout for job postings. Thoroughly research the target company, understanding its organizational culture, and tailor your interview answers accordingly.

Practice extensively, as there are abundant online resources offering interview questions and practice tests to help you prepare. 

inspiring education An outstanding education has the power to transform lives – the lives of the individual child and of their family and wider community.

The Caterham School Transformational Bursaries Fund was established in 2019 to transform young people’s life chances. We work with local primary schools and the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation to identify children facing challenging circumstances, who are from lowincome households and who qualify for free school meals. In addition, we prioritise places for children who: may be on the edge of, or in the care system; have a lack of mentors and role models within their immediate environment; are living in overcrowded housing; and are from families where there is intergenerational unemployment.

Throughout our appeal, we have been overwhelmed by the community support and your generosity. Please consider helping us to support life changing opportunities for even more young people by setting up a regular Direct Debit to the Transformational Bursaries Appeal.
