An Eye for Photography $90

Ages 10-16

Capture, edit and share! Explore a hobby that can last a lifetime and even branch into an exciting career. This class will have students taking photographs both in-studio and on-location using Adobe Photoshop for editing, building their portfolios, and learning from the instructor who is passionate about photography. Students will be responsible for bringing their own SLR digital camera. Please – no phones or tablets.

Art Media of Your Choice $90 Ages 9-14

Join us as we learn artistic ways of combining paint to create magnificent and unique works of art. Bring your imagination and creativity to life! You will learn how to build your painting background and use various mediums such as acrylics, watercolor, and art pens. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.

ArtRazeous! $90 Ages 9-14

Students will learn the basics of portrait art, how to draw their favorite animals with colored pencils, and landscape art techniques. Beginning drawing techniques and how to use pencils and colored pencils will be introduced. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.

Babysitting 101 $140 Ages 12-16

CVCC has joined with Catawba Valley Medical Center and the Safe Kids Program in hosting a Babysitting 101 camp. This camp will prepare students for the responsibilities of babysitting. This course covers the basics of babysitting, home safety, age-appropriate games and toys, and tips for preventing common childcare problems. By the end of the class, students will receive certifications in ARC Pediatric First Aid and Child/Infant/AED. Students need to bring a baby doll and baby blanket or small towel to first class session. Due to the certification rules, students must be 12 years of age or older to attend.

Back to School Hullabaloo! $185 Ages 6-12

Using the skills and experiences of two veteran teachers, your student will get revved up for a great school year! Reviewing math, reading and writing, the student will receive a strong review for a better foundation. This will provide a positive platform to face the many challenges and adventures of the upcoming school year.

Baking for Beginner Campers $240 Ages 8-14

We will learn the basics of baking by using some mixes and learning proper measuring techniques. We will explore quick breads with pancakes, muffins, cookies, and biscuits. For yeast breads, we will make pizza, and yeast rolls.

Baking for Advanced Campers $240 Ages 8-14

For those that have had a lot of experience in the kitchen or who completed the Baking for Beginners camp and you are ready to bake entirely from scratch, then this camp is for you! We will explore quick and yeast breads with more complex recipes for cookies, biscuits, scones, rolls, and homemade pizza.

Beauty Bootcamp $100 Ages 8-12

This class is perfect for students who are new to doing their own makeup, hair and nails. From practicing braids and heatless hairstyles, learning simple skills on enhancing natural beauty, to experiencing a spa day with facials and manicures. Most of all, they will learn beauty tips to help them look and feel their best while also building confidence. We will

complete the week with a mini-photoshoot party showcasing all things beauty, inside and out!

Candle Making $130 Ages 12-16

In this camp we will be learning how to make your own candles! Customize your jar, scent, color, and decorate your very own soy candle. (Caution: involves hot wax)

Cartooning-Beg/Int $90 Ages 9-14

Draw your favorite cartoon character or create a new one using your imagination. Pencil, ink, and various color media are used for accent and enhancement. Come with an open mind and be creative. No art skill is required. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.

Christmas in July Pottery $130 Ages 10-14

In this one-week camp, students will explore the wonderful world of clay. Students will learn to create their own holiday themed clay pieces by using the hand building methods of coiling, pinching, and slabs. Christmas ornaments, trees and other creative projects will be explored. All finished/glazed work will be available for pick up two weeks after class. CVCC will hold the finished pieces for approximately 4-weeks, so please be sure to pick the pieces up in time!

Creative Expression with Clay $130 Ages 10-14

Creative Jewelry for Kids $105 Ages 10-16

Make your own earrings, necklaces and pendants in this creative jewelry making class! We will use colorful stone beads, a variety of designs, and even create a photo pendant! Siblings are encouraged! Everyone will leave with a brand-new set of jewelry to wear as a lovely conversational piece or give away as gifts!

Creative Journaling

and Cursive Writing $95 Ages 8-12

Ask your parents if they know cursive….or your grandparents! Many schools don’t have the time to teach this beautiful skill anymore so let’s start now during summer! If you like writing stories, making lists, using a Vision Board, or think you might, then join us. We will be using a variety of pens, markers, and fun ideas to create your own journals where we will write daily. The ideas are limitless on what a person can write about. Part of each class will be learning cursive letters and forming words and sentences. The rest of the class will be spent on short stories, poems, lists, characters, imagination, and even some hand exercises to help us form easy to read words!

Creature Creators $130 Ages 10-14

In this four-day camp, students will use clay to create whimsical animals. Using various hand building techniques, students will create several animals of their choice. Students will get to take home several unique ceramic creatures. All finished/ glazed work will be available for pickup two weeks after the camp. CVCC will hold the finished pieces for approximately 4-weeks, so please be sure to pick the pieces up in time!

CSI Camps $115 Ages 10-14

Have you ever wanted to be a CSI Detective and learn about forensics? Have you ever wanted to “work a crime scene?” Use the knowledge and skills you learn during this class to solve the case. During this class, we will talk about fingerprints, DNA, hair, fiber and more! You will have fun learning lab work, Crime Scene memory and even an Escape room! A crime scene will tell you what happened, and the evidence will never lie.

Design XD $275 Ages 14-18

Design XD is a two-week, summer design workshop sponsored by the Advertising and Graphic Design program at CVCC. Design XD participants are introduced to design thinking and visual problem solving in the world around us. During this two-week workshop, students are introduced to creative problem solving, foundations of good design, and how to execute both analog and digital designs into real world applications. Students will conceptualize and develop solutions to projects—including physical and digital prototypes. Upon completion of the camp, students will have a great understanding of the CVCC Advertising and Graphic Design program as well as exposure to several Adobe Creative Suite software applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will also learn about the study of graphic design and the various careers possible in the field.

Digital Design

Using Adobe Illustrator $90 Ages 12-16

Adobe Illustrator is an application used by both artists and graphic designers to create vector illustrations, infographics, logos, characters, and more! After becoming familiar with the illustrator’s user interface and tools, students will have the opportunity to learn how simple it is to create complex graphics using the powerful features of the software. Challenges and projects will allow students to apply their knowledge and create everything from gorgeous web and mobile graphics to logos, icons, book illustrations, product packaging, and billboards.

DIY for Kids $105 Ages 8-12

Crafts are always an enjoyable activity for kids; how about crafts that kids can learn how to do on their own too? With DIY for Kids, children will get to enjoy learning how to make fun and useful crafts! The things they will learn to make will boost their creativity and they will be able to make them again at home. Supplies are included in the price.

Fabulous Cupcakes $240 Ages 8-14

Baking and decorating basics—we will use cake mixes and make homemade buttercream icing, decorate with piping bags and use a variety of tips. New cupcake ideas are used to create everyday and freestyle to use your imagination in a cupcake creation.

Fabulous Cupcakes-Advanced $240 Ages 8-14

For those students that have taken the Fabulous Cupcakes camp and want to dive a little deeper, than this camp is for you! We will make different cupcake flavors from scratch and focus more on piping techniques, and creating advanced designs.

Food & Fun at Hogwarts Culinary $240 Ages 9-14

Welcome all Hogwarts students to a week of FUN and FOOD! This week we will prepare and EAT food from Hogwarts Cafeterium just like Harry and the other wizards in training. We will also prepare potions and do character on all our favorite Hogwarts classmates. Bring your wand and join the FUN!

Funnly Functional $130 Ages 10-16

Gardening Fun:

Kids in the Garden! $185 Ages 8-12

In this four-day camp, your child will explore and discover many mysteries and adventures of plants. The instructor will discuss plant growth, proper soil, how to start your own garden, either a patio garden to a large yard garden. There will be even a discussion of a few bugs! Games and crafts will be part of the fun!

Get up, Get out, & Explore the Possibilities $90

Rising 7th & 8th graders

Let’s ROCK the REAL World by exploring future careers in the much-needed area of skilled trades. Explore your interests in skilled trades such as electrical, engineering, welding, and turf grass through a variety of interactive, hands-on activities. There is no time like the present to start thinking about your future. Your adventure awaits.

Got Game

$90 Ages 10-14

Do you enjoy playing computer games and wonder how they are created? Then this camp is for you! In this four-day camp, Blaire Miller, instructor, will teach students the history of games and how the graphics are made. The students will then design their own games and share the likes and dislikes of game features. The camp will end on Thursday when the student brings a game from home and enjoys sharing their favorite game to other students. Space is limited so sign up early!

Hand Built Pottery for Kids

$130 Ages 10-16

In this camp, we will explore hand building techniques to make functional pottery. Using stamps, found objects, and rollers, we will texture slabs of clay to make fun and original pieces of pottery. After firing, you will have functional, beautiful objects that you can use at home. All finished/glazed work will be available for pick up 2-weeks after class. CVCC will hold the finished pieces for approximately 4-weeks, so please be sure to pick the pieces up in time!

Inquisitive Engineering $95 Ages 12-16

Participants will follow the Engineering Design Process as they participate in these hands-on activities that solve real-life problems. Teamwork and critical thinking skills will be employed as students solve daily STEM-based challenges.

Learning with LEGO’s® $185 Ages 6-12

Students will be involved in a wonderful adventure using LEGO® blocks and books in this class. They will be learning while putting together fun and exciting projects with LEGO’s®. This class will be entertaining and educational! Writing, vocabulary, details, comprehension, and higher order thinking skills will be covered in innovative ways!

Let’s Party!

Creating your Own Party $95 Ages 8-12

In this fun and imaginative class, campers will learn how to throw their own party! It could be a birthday party, beach party, ice cream party, or a barbeque for the family….whatever they want! Campers will learn how to design invitations, make their own party favors, stickers, as well as create and design their own custom coloring books. Come and join the fun and let’s party!

Marvelous Multiplication $185 Ages 8-12

Make multiplication and division a breeze! Students will concentrate on learning these facts with various hands-on activities, games, and projects. Tricks and tips will be introduced to help review and strengthen the students’ multiplication and division skills.

Rockin Robots $90 Ages 10-14

Do you know what a robot is capable of doing? Get ready to take control! Build a program robot to accomplish simple tasks, respond to external stimuli, and overcome challenges using the EV3 robot. This camp is conducted by using programming language and software programming techniques to get your EV3 robot to navigate.

Sewing-Beg. $185 Ages 8-12

Come join us in the sewing room for an introduction to sewing machine basics, hand sewing techniques, hemming, and mending, buttons, pattern reading, and fabric choices. Use your creativity to make some simple projects such as a tote bag, pin cushion, and tissue holder. Sewing machines are provided. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.

Sewing-Adv. $185 Ages 8-12

Continue the fun starting Beginning Sewing Level I to improve your sewing skills. Learn the following techniques used in sewing—sewing machine stitches, hand sewing techniques, hemming and mending, buttons, pattern reading, and zippers. Use your creativity to make simple projects such as a zippered bag, a vest, or stuffed animal. Sewing machines will be provided.

Soap Making

$125 Ages 10-14

In the fun filled camp, we will be learning how to make your own custom soap! Customize your shape, scent, color, and add fun details to your soap. (Caution: contains hot wax and rubbing alcohol)

Stained Glass Mosaic-Beg. $115 Ages 10-14

Come join the fun for a beginning Stained Glass Mosaic camp. We will learn to cut stained glass and how to use glass tools safely. Then we will build a mosaic style framed picture and a suncatcher. Expect to make at least two beautiful stainedglass items for using it as your personal keepsakes or giving it as a gift. This camp will start you on the road of learning the art of stained glass! Most supplies are included.

STEAM Bucket List $95 Ages 7-10

Have you ever made a bucket list of fun things you wanted to do in a certain amount of time? Well, join us to complete our Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) Bucket List this summer! We have an entire list of things to do including making slime, catapults, marshmallow shooters, cup parachutes, high towers, floating ships, Frankenworms, bridges, and so much more! We will also be getting crafty with the experiments and have some science to bring home. Come ready and check items off that bucket list!

STEAM Pets $95 Ages 7-10

Roar, Woof, Chirp, Meow….animals and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) activities will make this a PET adventure full of fun! We will answer the question: What Pet should I get? (No actual pets will be used in the making of this class, however). We will explore activities about dogs, cats, birds, fish, gerbils, and more household pets. Students will read, create, make, investigate, and learn about adopting and caring for pets. Think of it as becoming pet owners ready for Fido---making fancy collars, bowls, going to vet appointments, and more!

Sticker Making Camp $95 Ages 8-12

In this camp, we will be learning how to make any sticker you can think of! Using illustrator, let your imagination run wild and create some fun stickers to put on your computer, phone case, water bottle, and much more!

Stop Motion Film $90 Ages 12-16

In this film class we will be exploring the wonders of filming and editing! Learn how to edit like a pro and film some memorable moments with your friends! In this camp, we will explore the styles of stop motion, trailers, and possibly making a music video!

Summerschool at Hogwarts $185 Ages 8-12

Spend a few days pretending you are training at Hogwarts to become a “Wizard” at reading, writing, math, making potions with poetry and even flying paper airplanes! We will make magical wands and have one “Magical Time” while learning at Hogwarts!

Theme Week: Letter of the Day $95 Ages 8-12

Join us for a variety of activities based on the LETTER of the day of the week. Make it Monday will include crafts, making, building, and inventing activities. Teach it Tuesday will focus on careers, learning new things, jobs we can have one day, and sharing our learning with others. Water Wednesday will let us explore with water by making bubbles, learning about the ocean, and tasting our own hand-made lemonade. Thinking Thursday will be about being imaginative with theater, writing, making cards, experimenting with art, and playing games. Come and enjoy the fun!

Wheel Throwing on the Wheel $130 Ages 10-14

Students will learn the basics and unlock the mystery of making pottery using the wheel. We will make and fire functional pottery that you can take home and use every day. All finished/Glazed work will be available for pickup two weeks after the camp. CVCC will hold the finished pieces for approximately 4-weeks, so please be sure to pick the pieces up in time!

A Word About Waiting to Enroll:

Every class has a minimum required enrollment. If this minimum is not met prior to the starting date, the class will be canceled. If you find a class you like, encourage a friend to join too. Sometimes two or three people make the difference between “go” and “cancel.”

Refund Policy

Our instructors are paid for fees collected so we must guarantee a minimum enrollment to schedule a class. If it becomes necessary for you to withdraw from a class, please contact Cheri Toney at 828.327.7000, Ext. 4320 or email her at ctoney@cvcc.edu at least the day before the camp begins.

NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR CAMPS AFTER THE CAMP BEGINS.

Schedule Changes

The information in this brochure is based on conditions at the time of printing and is subject to change. Classes may be canceled and/or locations may be changed at the discretion of the Summerscapes program administration.

Sign-in Procedures

For safety precautions, a parent/guardian must check your child/children in and check out of all Summerscapes classes each day. Check-in begins no sooner than lO minutes prior to your child’s class. NO CHILDREN MAY BE LEFT UNATTENDED.
