A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR When I joined the Red Hawk Communications team in January 2022, I was quickly tasked with what I thought would be the simplest part of my job: Writing and editing the college magazine.

The idea of a magazine was very exciting. I love writing, I love stories, and I love meeting new people—that’s why I wanted to work in Marketing, after all—and it was an honor to undertake the makings of a college magazine.

Little did I know that this achievement would require the help of my whole team.

As you explore the third issue of CVCC SOAR Magazine, think about all that Red Hawk Nation has accomplished in just one year. We launched our first Ready. Set. SOAR. Open House. We’ve added student events, like CommUNITY Day and a revamped New Student Orientation. We’ve established new degree programs, achieved accreditations, and watched many, many students find jobs or graduate to the next part of their lives. What a story we have!

So again, Red Hawk Nation, I could not have written the THIRD issue of CVCC SOAR Magazine without my team— and that includes you.

This has been a season of many ‘firsts’ for Red Hawk Nation, and it has been my privilege to guide the college through our exciting ventures.

We’ve established new academic degree programs, welcomed prospective students to our doors at the Ready. Set. SOAR Open House, and witnessed the growth of CVCC locations like the Alexander Complex. As you read through this magazine, I hope you gain a deeper understanding of why teamwork is such an important aspect of success.

Red Hawk Nation could not be the community cornerstone that it is today if it weren’t for the hard work of our faculty, staff, partners, and students, and while the academic year continues to unfold, I hope these stories inspire each one of us to reach new heights.

[graduating] a lot more special,” Marcus Sigmon said. “He’s the one who really put me on this path and pushed me to do my best.

I wouldn’t have any of this if it weren’t for him.” Marcus has his sights set on the CVCC Engineering Program, remaining close to the family legacy.

Other graduates included Ashley HernandezMartinez, an Associate in Arts recipient gearing up to attend Cornell University. “It is exciting, and a bit scary,” Ashley stated.

“I’m going to study Communications [at Cornell] and possibly minor in business.” She continued to explain that the entire family moved to the United States from their home country so that Ashley could go above and beyond to reach her dreams.

Some graduates received award recognition, like 2023 President’s Award recipient Bradley Jamison. Along with this award, Jamison was a finalist for the Governor Robert W. Scott Leadership Award through the North Carolina Community College System. He received three degrees during this year’s ceremony, including an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Business Administration and an Associate in General Education.

“CVCC has helped me achieve goals beyond my imagination,” Jamison said. “It was a lot of hard work and late nights, but that hard work paid off today. This is the most accomplished I’ve felt in my whole life. This moment paves the way for the rest of my future.”

We hope every student feels this way about their

How a Cosmetology graduate built her business f rom the roots up.

Becoming a business owner — and running her own salon studio — was not always on Marlee Wharton’s radar. However, as someone committed to developing her passions, Marlee found great success in her professional pursuits after graduating from the CVCC Cosmetology program.

Her story begins a few years ago, when she worked 9-5 hours at a local restaurant to support her son while he attended Pre-K. She did her best to work during the day, so that when evening rolled around, she could stay home and be there for her son.

It was a job that she enjoyed, because it allowed her to serve others, to meet new people in the community, and to continue showing support for her family. As she got to know her customers better, she would engage in longer conversations with some of the “regulars”, who occasionally asked Marlee what plans she had for the future.

One day, the question caught her off-guard.

She wasn’t certain of her plans, but she knew what she didn’t want to do—go to school during the day, work during the night, and miss spending time with her son.

We were Catawba Valley Technical Institute, a small, local institution with ample room to grow. And since the college opened its doors on April 3, 1958, we have seen decades’ worth of progress—the addition of academic programs, the transformation of the student experience—and the establishment of our first Student Government Association.

His time in the service opened his eyes to what he could accomplish, even at a young age. Though he wasn’t sure where he would eventually call home, he and his wife settled back in the Catawba County area, and he enrolled in CVTI in 1967.

A week or two after starting college, Hunt decided to get familiar with campus, which included visiting the cafeteria during lunchtime. Though he was excited to make friends, he describes his first day at the CVTI cafeteria in one word: Disappointing.

When Caitlin Raper heard that she had the chance to be nominated for Student Government, she almost declined. It’s not that she lacked any confidence—she knows how to rise to the challenge—but she also knew that the responsibilities of SGA were a huge undertaking. “I’m not 100% sure I’ll be elected,” she said, “but I’ll try.” Thankfully Mr. Ron Carson, Coordinator for the Office of Student Equity & Engagement, did not take no for an answer. He reminded Caitlin that, whatever the election results, this was an opportunity to shine as a Red Hawk leader.

With goals to become an Orthopaedic surgeon, Caitlin is currently enrolled in CVCC’s School of Health Education. She maintains a strong courseload and holds a work-study position at the nursing program in the ValleySim Hospital, where she receives the opportunity to work alongside the nursing instructors and discover the ins-and-outs of nursing care, an experience she is quite thankful for. “A surgeon can’t really work without their nurse,” she explains, “and if I’m also learning the same skills as the nurses I might work with in the future, this will help me become a better surgeon.”

In addition to this work-study position, Caitlin creates time to volunteer for Students Striving For Success (SS4S), which connects students to local service projects. That’s where she met good friend Emely Tiscareno and CVCC Student Ambassador, Nisha Wright-Cavanaugh. Both of these women, along with Mr. Carson, helped Caitlin find ways to soar above 42

background or upbringing,” she says. “I’ve been in that same situation.

You can feel like your voice is so small...but to know that I can be the person who makes a difference is a really great thing. Kind of nervewracking, but a great thing.”

What is her favorite parts about being elected as SGA President? Her friend Emely was chosen to serve alongside her as VP. “I work very well with her,” Caitlin says. “I don’t ever think there is a time that I haven’t seen Emely working hard on something. I am very privileged to have her as my right-hand person.” Caitlin is ready to work with college leadership, connecting her peers to the academic and personal resources that will help them best navigate the college journey.

One responsibility of the SGA President is to participate in meetings with the college leadership board. These are not always simple to attend. Sometimes, they require knowledge of state budgets or other educational topics; however, Caitlin is eager to use these meetings as an opportunity to bring all student voices to the table, which goes hand-in-hand with the college’s effort to help students achieve success. Through her participation, she has also become more aware of resources available to students who walk through CVCC’s doors.

Some of her favorite resources include: Kintegra and counseling services (Located in S.O.A.R. Commons); the Hawk’s Nest food pantries (Located in S.O.A.R. Commons and the Student Center); and new avenues of online tutoring services in writing and other subjects. As Caitlin takes the leap at CVCC, this college continues to change her perspective of all that’s possible in higher education.

“I feel like community colleges are very overlooked,” she says, “but community colleges are honestly where you get your core classes done—and you can join at any level of financial abilities. I want students to come back and not fear the unknown. I want them to take the leap of faith and know that they will be supported.”

CONTINUING TO INSPIRE The Workforce Solutions Complex honors two educational trailblazers.

The Workforce Solutions Complex is one of the newest constructions on campus. It houses many programs in our School of Career and Technical Education (CTE), and it was the original landing ground for the Office of K-64.

Thanks to the generous donations and visionary insight of several partners, the WSC was transformed into a powerful memorial, as the CVCC Foundation dedicated two new wings to remarkable college leaders: James “Vernon” Tarlton III, and Mark Story.

Directly on the left side, students and staff can pass through the Mark Story Innovation Wing. Story, who served as CEO of K-64 Learning from 2017 until his unexpected passing in 2020, pioneered the bright outlook of our education systems not just at the community college, but for all three school districts in Catawba County.

Family and friends of Story gathered together during the unveiling this year to honor not only a great leader and visionary, but also a great husband and father.

“It was a wonderful day celebrating all Mark’s contributions to CVCC, K-64 and all of Catawba County,” said Mitzi Story, his wife. “He loved the area he grew up in and ultimately wanted all our young people to come back to this region. The celebration that took place solidifies all his efforts and hopefully will help to keep his passion alive for years to come. It is my hope that when students move throughout the Workforce Solution Complex that they will realize the contribution that Mark made for their futures.”

Jones credited Story’s innovative approach to the reason why Catawba County provided students and educators with the tools to successfully navigate the educational challenges brought forth by the pandemic.

“Without his forward-thinking leadership and razor focus on the K-64 priority of One-to-World Technology, which placed a Chromebook in the hands of all Catawba County students, we would not have been prepared to seamlessly transition to online learning during the COVID pandemic,” Jones said. “He was a visionary leader with a no-nonsense style and a heart of gold. Mark genuinely cared about others and was passionate about helping students. I will never forget the compassion, encouragement and kindness he extended to students, especially those who needed it the most.”

The outstanding story of a Red Hawks coach.

Coach England is a Catawba Valley standout. She has served as the head coach of the Red Hawks women’s basketball team for more than a decade, taking the sideline to continue the program after the first coach, Tommy Edwards, retired from the college. England’s work at CVCC has brought forth astounding athletic achievements—and she continues to shine a light on her Red Hawk student-athletes.

England’s passion for basketball began in elementary school, when she found herself bored at home and decided to start attending her older sister’s basketball practices at Newton Recreation. Her consistent appearance did not go unnoticed; eventually, her sister’s team invited her to play during practice. Getting the chance to go head-to-head on the court really sparked her dreams to life. “I soon realized that I liked the challenges and the object to score the ball in the basket,” England recalls.

From a young age, people identified her as a leader, as she was told time and time again that she would make a great teacher and coach.

Unsure of all the responsibilities this path required, however, England was convinced that coaching was not a feasible goal for her.

She continued to play basketball throughout high school and joined her college team at USC-Aiken for two years. During her college career, she quickly rose to the top. England got to play at the NAIA All-Conference and the NAIA All-District as a Freshmen and Sophomore, holding the scoring record at USC-Aiken and the Conference with 20.0 points per game. Before graduation, she became the only USC-Aiken basketball player, male or female, to ever win the Peach Belt Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Along with these impressive credits, England was reapproached by her college mentor, who asked her to help coach an AAU team. Though originally, she felt this was way off her radar, England soon discovered that working with young people and children was a great privilege, and she stayed with the AAU team for a while. After finding much success, this position quickly evolved to assisting at Newton Conover High School, which then turned into another position as a collegiate coach. Her time at CVCC began in 2010, when Women’s Basketball coach and team founder Tommy Edwards asked England to work as an assistant. For the next two years, England got to learn more about Red Hawk athletics, and eventually took on the role of Head Coach in 2012.

It may sound daunting to create a team of women with diverse personalities, values, and work ethics together on the court. But with a daily agenda and a bit of encouragement, England has brought to life a team of Red Hawk student-athletes who are both committed to the game and committed to each other. “I believe in teaching, re-teaching, and repetition,” England says, noting that she has developed a highintensity condition routine, for her athletes which includes weights, yoga, and running, along with regular court practice.

Being a college athlete is almost a full-time job; a player’s intensity, time management skills, self-discipline, and organization are all vital to the sport (and self-care is a large aspect of overall performance).
