CREATIVE RATIONALE

CONCLUSION 3

INTRODUCTION Let me choose is the Intercourse Project, which is part of the Workplace Training Component (FCT2) and aims to develop a multimedia campaign that seeks to foster teamwork skills in a dynamic interconnection of multiple artistic aspects, by students Cláudio Martins, Gonçalo Valente, Tiago Ferreira, Lourenço Serrão, Maria Viana, Margarida Fernandes, Diogo Costa, Vicente Pais, Alexandre Lopes, Catarina Lima, and Tomás Almeida, 2nd year of the Professional School of Image (EPI), in the school year 2020/2021. In the academic year 2020/2021, they will be in the 2nd year of the Escola Profissional de Imagem (EPI). The Interclass Project is divided into two parts: a written/theoretical component, which consists in the concession of a project dossier, and a practical component, which consists in the elaboration of a multimedia campaign previously chosen by the students, and a making of the work process. During the realization of this project, we were accompanied by the supervising teachers Rui Lança and Pedro Massena.

SYNOPSIS The project brief is divided into four main segments: Synopsis, Creative Rationale, Pieces of the campaign and Working Process.

In the short film we made we chose to create a story about Bernardo, a young ninth grader who is faced with indecision about what he wants for his future.

In the practical component, students will create a multi-media campaign, and present it publicly on 9 June 2021. Our group will produce a short film, an infographic and a poster allusive to the chosen theme.

The action begins with Bernardo walking down the street towards his school. He finds himself under pressure and a little lost for having to choose a course when he is still not sure of what he wants.

The theme of our project is based on portraying the pressure placed on young people in ninth grade when faced with the need to decide on a course, which often leads them to believe that the choice made at that moment will define their future permanently. However, we don’t have to stay in the same job, there is more than one option we can choose from throughout life. Experimenting helps us to feel less indecisive, not getting carried away by the choices of others.

He wakes up suddenly, finds his glasses as if they were new and realises that he had fallen asleep and that thanks to his dream he is ready to move on in life.

This pressure evolves throughout the day, turning into frustration, due to a colleague who pressures him to choose a path. When he gets home, the young man is faced with the same situation from his parents with the expectation that their son will follow their examples. The boy, truly lost, seeks refuge in his room. Now alone in his sea of thoughts clouded by indecision, he watches his glasses shatter as he sinks into his own despair, blurring his vision of his surroundings and falling asleep involuntarily. When he opens his eyes he also opens a door, which, like the next ones he will enter, shows a different profession. Bernardo feels encouraged to try them, but he can’t imagine following any of them in the future, until he finally finds his vocation by opening the last door.

SLOGAN AND CAMPAIGN SIGNATURE

Our aim with this campaign is to portray the pressure and difficulty that teenagers may feel when having to decide their academic path, being so young, with less experience and at a stage when they are still discovering themselves. It is a phase of great difficulty for many, where they are more easily influenced by the choices of others because they are not sure of what they want.

LET ME CHOOSE

YOU DON´T NEED TO FIT IN

We chose the phrase “Let me choose” as a slogan because it refers to the main concept addressed in our project, previously explained, reinforcing the idea that we should not let others decide for us.

For the campaign we created a signature with several messages behind it.

CONCEPT

Society inflicts the idea that this decision is bigger and more decisive than it really is, because, contrary to what we are led to believe, we don’t have to stay in the same profession all our lives and we can do more than one thing at the same time. In order to prove these assertions we made questionnaires to people in vocational education and to people in regular education. So we concluded that we were right. And we based this on the answers.

6

As the school says “creativity takes courage”, and with this signature, by saying that we don’t need to fit in, we mean that you don’t need to shut yourself in, playing with the word box - fit in. On the other hand, we want to show that we don’t have to fit in with society, that we don’t have to go with the flow. We can, yes, be different. Finally, as the posters are made to look like a badly constructed puzzle, there is a literal sense of “you don’t have to fit in”, always referring back to the above explanations.

7

GRAPHIC LINE The colour palette we used is composed of red (symbolising passion and confidence), orange (symbolising creativity, positivity and sociability), blue (from epi, but also symbolising tranquillity, serenity, faith), green (hope), black and white. The purpose of Dadaism is to make art break free from rationalist “prisons” and be merely the result of psychic automatism, selecting and combining elements by chance. Dadaism is a movement of negation: it is about totally negating culture, it defends the absurd, incoherence, disorder, chaos. Politically, it establishes itself as a protest against a civilisation that could not avoid war.

POSTER For this reason, our aim in using this movement is to portray a certain revolt against the pressure we are put under from a very young age. Our aim with the posters is to show that we don’t need to fit into other people’s choices and into one profession, you can choose what really interests you, even if what interests you is more than one profession.

With the posters we tried to appeal to social inclusion in Epi, having a person represented by each poster and in the fourth poster several people, namely from our group. Initially, we had as our main focus Dadaism, as a form of rebellion against the pressure that we are put under from a very young age. However, we ended up not intensifying it so much, resorting more to colour and minimalism. Not leaving Dadaism aside, however, because it continues to be present in the deconstruction of the photographs on the poster.

POSTER

Each poster is composed of a deconstructed photograph and represented by a different colour. All of these have a QR code that takes the target directly to an animation of the same poster. 10

SHORT FILM In the short film we used abstract and symbolic elements to convey feelings such as frustration, confusion, stress, pressure, despair, relief and satisfaction. The main character’s glasses are broken since the beginning of the short film, having only tape holding them, symbolizing the pressure and frustration Bernardo feels when he knows he has to choose a course, without ever having tried anything, and consequently without knowing what he wants for the future. The glasses literally represent the clear vision of the world that surrounds him and his inner world. By having the faulty glasses, this vision is affected, due to the doubts he has about his identity and life. Later, when they break, it is because the young man too has reached a limit and exhaustion. It is for this reason that when Bernardo wakes up, the glasses are intact: the pressure, confusion and 12

despair that previously consumed the boy, had been replaced by decision, relief and satisfaction. When Bernardo sits up in his bed, he begins to hear his parents’ voices repetitively in his head while he gets a distorted and unreal vision of the room. The boy observes with his own eyes the influence of their tension, despair and mental disorder on his precession of the world. The various doors that are opened by the boy mirror the variety of options we currently have, highlighting the idea that there is not just one profession, with not everyone having to follow the same or stick to the same career for the rest of their lives. The moment Bernardo starts to open each door, he is having the opportunity to experience the professions he has a choice of, helping him to have a more defined

idea of his interests, starting to make a selection of what he really wants for the future. As soon as he opens the last door, we can tell by the student’s expression that he has finally made a decision with which he feels satisfied.

CONCLUsion

Acknowledgements

In conclusion, this project gave us the opportunity to work with several different courses, allowing us to have a greater sense of how these areas depend on each other, which is why we believe it is important to carry out this type of project that not only gives us professional experience, but also prepares us for the world of work. With this campaign we hope to reach the people who most need support and confidence to make these kinds of decisions, as well as those who lack the necessary support from those around them.

For the elaboration of this project was fundamental the dedication and commitment spent throughout the process of its realization. We would like to thank teachers Rui Lança and Pedro Massena for their fundamental contribution to the project. We would also like to thank EPI - Professional School of Image for providing us a budget in case of need and for proposing and making possible the realization of this project.

Don’t get carried away by the choices and decisions of others, create your own path.
