New Fountaine Pajot Alegria 67 Wins Prestigious Christofle Award Fountaine Pajot’s stunning new Alegria 67 sailing catamaran has won the category of “Best Sailing Multihull Over 15m” at the 2019 Christofle Yacht Style Awards. The awards, which recognize the very best of the yachting industry in Asia and internationally, were announced on January 10 at a gala ceremony at Café Del Mar Phuket attended by a swag of yachting VIPs and industry dignitaries. The ceremony coincided with the opening day of the Thailand Yacht Show & Rendezvous with both events serving to confirm Phuket’s status as Southeast Asia’s yachting hub. Launched in mid-2018, the Alegria 67 is the jewel in the crown of Fountaine Pajot’s exclusive Flagship Class range and redefines luxury cruising. Designed to deliver outstanding performance at sea, the new Alegria 67 is the remarkable culmination of the shipyard’s technological advances and innovative concepts, specifically designed for optimal safety and offshore performance.

6

The internationally acclaimed naval architecture partnership of Berret Racoupeau designed the catamaran with no compromises on comfort or volume and have delivered generous living areas and a stunning contemporary design aesthetic. The catamaran has an exceptionally spacious Lounge Deck easily accessible from both sides of the cockpit and fitted with a decadent lounge setting and day beds located aft of the twin steering stations. The innovative design revolutionizes the traditional flybridge concept and emphasizes the shipyard’s philosophy of sharing the cruising experience. Similarly, the main cockpit has been designed for large groups with a dining table to accommodate up to 12 guests, while the forward cockpit has additional lounges and the option of an integrated spa.

The catamaran’s breathtaking interior features a soft and elegant aesthetic with muted contemporary tones, superior quality finishes and expansive windows to enhance the natural light throughout the catamaran. Available in a variety of layouts, the Alegria 67 is ideal for luxurious private cruising or exclusive charter operations. The Maestro version features an exquisite master suite that shatters all benchmarks set by other catamarans in her class with its unprecedented space, beautiful en-suite and stunning luminosity. Each of the four double guest cabins in this version is also surprisingly large with island beds, private en-suites and abundance of storage. The charter version affords six double cabins (or five double plus one twin), each with their own private en-suites, and both the Maestro and Charter versions offer the option of the remarkable modern galley to be located on the main level or below deck for optimized saloon space. The Alegria 67 promises to continue Fountaine Pajot’s reputation for outstanding performance at sea, with maximum stability and superb balance for outstanding comfort underway and at anchor. Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 Awarded ‘2019 European Yacht of the Year’ Fountaine Pajot’s new Astréa 42 recently won the prestigious “2019 European Yacht of the Year” award. The stunning sailing catamaran was awarded the honor ahead of multihulls of all sizes and, along with “Multihull of the Year” award received in 2018, confirms the Astréa 42’s status as arguably the world’s best cruising catamaran. The 2019 European Yacht of the Year award was held at the recent boot Düsseldorf boat show in Germany and decided by a judging panel of 12 leading international marine journalists. Multihull Solutions – the exclusive importer and distributor of Fountaine Pajot catamarans in the Asia Pacific – has already sold 21 Astréa 42 models since its launch last year, with more than 200 now sold worldwide. The Astréa 42 is distinguished by its abundance of natural light, energetic lines, elegant living spaces and unparalleled comfort, while delivering exceptional performance underway.

10

The catamaran demonstrates the boatyard’s commitment to innovation while preserving the classic identity of the Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans’ range. The Astréa 42 features all the elements that contributed to making the shipyard’s latest release, the Saona 47, an international success. Her inverted bow, the new signature mark of the range, gives the boat an elegant and dynamic line while offering incomparable interior space. The Astréa 42 was conceived and designed to facilitate free-flowing movement throughout the boat, as well as linking the helm station

with the outdoor relaxation and living spaces from coachroof to cockpit. The coachroof features a double seat at the helmstation and a builtin sun lounger for enjoying idyllic downtime at sea. The spacious cockpit, equipped with an optional integrated plancha grill, is the perfect place to relax and feel at one with the ocean, enhanced by the Beach Club option that provides an embedded gangway flush with her line. The comfortable lounge has been designed with expansive panoramic windows that bathe the interior in natural light. Her U-shaped galley transitions seamlessly with the cockpit courtesy of a vast sliding pocket door. Available in two versions – Owner and Quatuor – with 12 bathroom layout options, the Astréa 42 has everything needed to clients’ casual or extended cruising dreams. Best Small Cruiser The F-22 from Farrier International recently won the Best Boat 2019 Award from SAIL Magazine for Best Small Cruiser! The original F-27 (now in the US Sailboat Hall of Fame) helped change the sailing world when it was introduced in 1986, and the new generation F-22 has now taken it another giant leap forward. It is a brand new design developed in New Zealand by Farrier Marine (NZ) Ltd, and the finished boat can be shipped anywhere in the world. This pocket-sized folding trimaran was the swan song design for renowned multihull pioneer Ian Farrier, who worked at refining its details right up until his untimely death at age 70 in December 2017. Farrier played a leading role in popularizing and perfecting the concept of trailerable cruiser-racer trimarans starting in the 1970s and was always working to improve his boats. Built by Farrier Marine, the company Farrier formed after splitting with his first breakthrough firm, Corsair (and which was recently acquired by U.S.-based Daedalus Composites), the Farrier-22 is available in both standard and

racing versions and packs a lot of features into a small package. Interior space is maximized by a slightly offset centerboard trunk that is neatly incorporated into the interior furniture (a slightly more intrusive daggerboard is optional) and a further refinement of Farrier’s patented ama folding system, which allows the boat to retain maximum ama beam strength without bringing any of the beam’s structural support into the interior. The amas and their folding struts are also carried higher than before when deployed, which reduces flying spray and increases performance under sail. The boat can be ordered with an aluminum or carbon mast (both

versions are rotating), and Farrier’s unique boomless mainsail furling rig simplifies sailhandling while sacrificing nothing in terms of sailing efficiency. Beyond that, what most impressed our judges was the boat’s very cruisable interior. Galley modules to either side of the companionway include a small sink and a two-burner Origo stove and stow neatly away for sailing, while a pop-top over the companionway provides standing headroom. Better still, the boat’s small chemical toilet can be used away from prying eyes, thanks to a very clever folding bulkhead and rollup screen. Bottom line: with a total of four berths, this boat, which can be rigged and launched singlehanded in about half an hour, can serve as a very versatile cruising platform for couples with or without young children, even as the boat’s screecher set on an optional bowsprit sends you blasting across the bay. Kiwi Sailing Legacy to Live On Through Production On Both Sides of the World New Zealand trimaran company Farrier Marine Group, famous for cutting-edge design and speed, will expand through its sale to American company Daedalus Composites. The original Farrier design changed the sailing world and is a member of the US Sailboat Hall of Fame. Farrier Marine is best known for its F-22, a folding trimaran designed by company founder Ian Farrier. The new generation F-22 is crafted in Christchurch and shipped all over the world. Discussions of a production partnership began three years ago between Ian Farrier and Michael Reardon, CEO of Daedalus Yachts, based in Edenton, North Carolina, USA. “Ian and I reached a deal in principle just before his sudden and untimely death in December 2017,” says Michael. “Those talks then evolved into an outright purchase of the brand and assets, which will continue to be managed from Christchurch by Rob Densem, General Manager of Farrier Marine. “I have huge respect for Farrier yachts, for Ian Farrier and his 40-year history of designing multihulls. Early designs such as the Trailer Tris of the late 1970s were revolutionary. His 18-foot design was put into production in the USA and Australia, where it won Australian Boat of the Year in 1981. Through his design collaborations with production builders, custom builders and his own companies, Ian was responsible for 16

more than 3000 sailing multihulls afloat today. His designs were continually evolving game changers in the world of multihulls, and are safe, affordable and beautifully engineered performance trimarans. “We have an incredibly talented and technically advanced staff in both Christchurch and our Edenton superyacht building campus,” continues Michael. “We are dedicated to producing F-22s to Ian’s extremely high standards, as well as new models from his drawing board. This will ensure the Farrier Marine reputation lives on and thrives into the future.” Rob Densem says the opportunity for Farrier Marine to work with Daedalus Yachts is very good news for Farrier fans the world over. “Working with Daedalus Yachts will give us a secondary production facility to complement the Christchurch one, and so increase production of the F-22,” he says. “There is international high demand for F-22s so we have an order backlog. We will reduce this much more quickly with help from our team in North Carolina, together us-

ing the latest design and technology programs to further enhance production methods, and the environmental sustainability of the product.” About Farrier International Farrier International is a trimaran manufacturer based in Christchurch, New Zealand. The sailing boats produced by this shipyard are designed by Ian Farrier, and have a unique patented folding system without hinges in the beams or the critical beam to float join, allowing the overall beam to be varied in seconds by just one person. About Daedalus Yachts Daedalus Yachts is a yacht design, engineering, and manufacturing company born out of 35 years of yachting excellence. The Daedalus 80 catamaran is the world’s first production hydrogenpowered yacht. Best Multihull Cruising Boat 40 to 50ft With the launch of the new Lagoon 50, the French catamaran builder introduced a whole host of innovations that truly set the boat apart in a world of evolutionary look-alikes. Oh, the places you can go when you start with a clean sheet of paper. With 1,700 feet of upwind sail area between the standard full-batten mainsail and an 87 percent selftacking jib, she is not under-canvased. The mast, which was moved aft to minimize hobby-horsing, is also 87 feet high, giving this cat a higher aspect ratio to catch the wind further aloft. An optional Code 0 provides added oomph sailing downwind. The hydraulic swim platform carries the tender, but in a whole new way, as the ends flip up to reveal a set of chocks. Otherwise, the platform is smooth and a great playground. Two squared-off transoms steps leading to the cockpit are nice and low. Not only does this result in a sleeker look, it also creates an easier transition from the water or dock to the main deck. To satisfy industry regulations, the engine room hatches open up facing forward and are hinged aft so checking the diesels underway will keep you in the cockpit and not out on the steps. Also aft, a grill been built into the transom swivels out and over the steps to keep the smoke out of the cockpit. Inside, a nearly full-beam settee wraps around a table and center island holding a popup TV. This table has

“magical” legs that mysteriously articulate to lower and simultaneously move the table away from the settee to provide legroom. Available configurations include three to six cabins, and the master suite boasts a desk with a built-in bookcase and a small settee with a walk-in closet equipped with three rows of three drawers and a skylight overhead to let in plenty of light. There are also lockers hidden behind these closets for stashing things like duffels and even an integrated magazine rack to ensure you want for nothing when under sail and enjoying the best cruising experience possible. hulls—the 51 is a very different animal, a big trimaran with vast interior space that can carry six people across an ocean rapidly in real comfort. Most of that space looks out through a set of large windows in all directions, and the entire vessel is neatly built and nicely finished, featuring a decor and design with a contemporary French flair. Like the 45, the galley, navigation, social spaces and master accommodations are all up on the main bridgedeck. However, in contrast to the 45, the amas of this boat are large enough to hold two more owner-size cabins, comparable to those of a catamaran. Aft, large sliding doors let the saloon blend 17

seemlessly with the afterdeck, while belowdecks, mechanics, rejoice: the interior of the central hull includes a big standup “basement” devoted to all the mechanical and propulsion systems, including a walk-around engine room and easy access to the generator, batteries, air conditioning, tanks, watermaker and whatever else an owner might want to include. (As an added benefit, this placement also keeps the heaviest parts of the boat low and centrally located.) The rig is simple and efficient, the decks are easy to traverse, and the raised helm station provides excellent visibility and is a central gathering point for the control lines. In bad weather, the skipper can also sit inside near the smooth-

est-riding part of the boat at a nav desk resembling a drone control station and steer with the autopilot. Oh, and there’s a panoramic view of the outside world from there, too. Bottom line: the Neel 51 is a fast, seaworthy voyaging yacht with an

In addition, we market to all industry brokers online, with brochures, crew profiles plus availability updates. Increasingly, we are selling more and more large, luxury catamarans. The Catamaran Company meticulously maintains, repairs and provides dockage for the yacht as well as advertising and promotion. Revolutionary Motor Designed Specifically for Dinghies and Tenders PropEle Electric Boat Motors, an innovation leader in portable electric propulsion, recently announced the EP Carry. Now in full production, the innovative motor system provides lightweight, efficient, simple-to-use propulsion. The EP Carry is designed specifically for dinghies, tenders, small rowing and other craft under 13 feet and 600 pounds. The new product line delivers ship-to-shore simplicity, and quiet electric power with unique, patented features for easy control, comfort and safety. Weighing in at a mere 14 pounds, the revolutionary EP Carry motor is sold complete with a 7-pound buoyant battery pack – making it the lightest electric motor system on the market and compact enough to easily handle and lift by hand. This light weight, combined with advanced ergonomics, allows for simple and fast set-up and operation, all from a seated position. The motor clamps onto a transom or motor mount and sets up in less than a minute. With a pull on the tiller arm to lift the prop, boaters can beach their dinghy, eliminating the challenges of traditional outboards that require reaching back or latching with a second hand. All controls including reverse gear are within reach at the end of the longest tiller arm of any outboard motor. In spite of its small size and low weight, the EP Carry provides ample propulsion for one to three hours, depending on the power level selected. Designed to deliver long runtime for multiple ship-toshore trips, most small boats can expect speeds of 3.5 to 4.2 knots with a range of 3-6 miles per charge. Lithium battery packs offer reliable operation with fast recharge times. “I originally developed the EP Carry system to protect my family from harmful carbon monoxide fumes while we were enjoying our time on the water,” said Joe Grez, founder, PropEle. “I wanted a system that provided clean, safe and efficient electric power, with an elegant design that could be hand carried. 28

I discovered that an electric solution enhances your boating experience by removing the hassles, fumes, emissions and noise of gas motors. Now sailors, cruisers, boating dog owners and boaters on lakes can travel quickly, safely and more enjoyably.” Engineered for maximum efficiency, the EP Carry’s custom brushless motor provides 220 watts of power. Offering boaters the easiest ownership experience, the EP Carry includes a patented water-lubricated gear system that requires zero maintenance. Owners of the EP Carry can enjoy safe shallow-water operation due to its innovative design features including a unique, high-aspect ratio and slow-turning prop design; as well as a low-force grounding kick-up, a well-protected skeg and an electronic shear pin. The motor is available in three shaft lengths – Mini, Standard/Short and Long, and is solar-ready with a variety of 24-volt panels available to fit the unique needs of each owner. The EP Carry motor system is available for $1,600 as a complete kit with motor, battery, fast charger, accessory carry bags and a lock for security. To learn more about the EP Carry or PropEle Electric Boat Motors please visit www.epcarry.com. About PropEle Electric Boat Motors, Inc.: Based in in North Bend, Washington, PropEle Electric Boat Motors manufactures the EP Carry system using advanced electronics technology, a lightweight Lithium battery and a unique patented industrial design. The first Electric Paddle motors were sold in 2009 and years later the design inspiration retains the same simple, yet elegant paddle shape, reminiscent of the fact that small boats were originally hand-paddled or rowed. Achieving a new standard of performance and function, the EP Carry is the most lightweight and easy to use portable electric outboard boat motor available, providing a more enjoyable boating experience for boaters of all ages. www.epcarry.com

In the Galley

with Carolyn Shearlock

Carolyn Shearlock and her husband Dave have been cruising over 11 years and 10,000 miles, first on a Tayana 37 monohull and now on a 34’ Gemini catamaran. Along the way, they sold pretty much everything they owned (twice!), gained a great boat dog, had a bunch of wonderful times and some adventures . . . and learned a ton about what does and doesn’t work! Carolyn has a website www.boatgalley.com and co-authored The Boat Galley Cookbook with Jan Irons, which has over 800 boat-friendly recipes and is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

uffalo Wings (aka Hot Wings) are almost traditional while watching football games. They’re great for almost any get together, actually. But if you can’t get a bunch of actual wings, this dip is a great alternative . . . and it’s easy to make on a boat. You can even use canned chicken! If you’re in a remote anchorage and have satellite radio or an SSB that can get Armed Forces Radio, invite the neighbors over! One of our fondest memories is this NASCAR party “aboard” Amazing Grace, anchored off Candeleros Bay, just south of Puerto Escondido in the Sea of Cortez. We cranked up the cockpit speakers and lounged in the water with noodles and PDFs to keep cool in the 100+ degree weather, occasionally crawling out for food and fresh drinks!

Buffalo Wings Dip

Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 20 mins Total Time: 35 mins If you like hot wings, this dip captures the flavor in an easy-to-make dip! 32

Ingredients 12 ounces chicken chunks, canned, drained (OR 2 chicken breasts, cooked) 8 ounces cream cheese (light is fine, but not fat free) ¾ cup blue cheese dressing (OR ranch dressing) ¼ cup hot sauce (to taste, depending on brand of sauce used and personal preference) 4 ounces cheddar cheese, grated (OR other cheese that will melt) Instructions Shred chicken and place in a baking dish, approximately 8 inches square (will also work in a loaf pan, but bake an extra 5 minutes to compensate for it being thicker). Pour hot sauce over chicken, mix well to coat evenly and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the cream cheese in a saucepan over low heat. Add the blue cheese dressing and mix well. Remove from heat and pour over the chicken. Mix well so that all chicken is coated. Bake for 10 minutes at 350. Remove, but don’t turn the oven off. Sprinkle the cheese over the top and return to the oven for another 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and golden. Best served hot, but also good cold. Notes, Substitutions and Variations Serve with tortilla chips, crackers, pita wedges or veggies such as carrot or celery sticks. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

T

his is an absolutely wonderful appetizer for hot days! I’m not normally a big fan of dill pickles, and yet I find it perfectly hits the spot on those sweltering days . . . and considering that there’s never any left when I take it to a potluck, I think others also like it! I got the idea after someone made wonderful dill pickle rolls (slice of ham, spread with cream cheese, then place a dill pickle on top and roll up, then cut into ¼″ slices) and wanted the same flavor but with a lot less work.

Substitutions/variations: Chop dill pickles if dill relish is not available Add a bit of mayonnaise, sour cream, milk or dill pickle juice if dip is too thick Substitute sour cream for the cream cheese Small cans of ham – about the size of tuna cans – can generally be found near the tuna. You can also use roughly chopped deli ham – or leftover baked ham. Substitute a can of drained tuna (or smoked tuna) for the ham – be careful to mix in gently so it doesn’t turn to mush Omit the meat for a vegetarian version Keto/LCHF in moderation - 5g carbs per portion (⅛ of total)

Dill Pickle Dip

Prep Time: 10 mins Total Time: 10 mins Delicious summertime dip -- totally hits the spot on sweltering days Course: Appetizers & Snacks Cuisine: American, Gluten-Free, Keto/LCHF Servings: 8 people Calories: 134 kcal Ingredients ½ cup dill pickle relish 8 ounces soft cream cheese ½ teaspoon garlic power if pickle relish does not have garlic 1 6-ounce can ham drained and broken Instructions Mix dill pickle relish, cream cheese and garlic thoroughly, then mix in ham chunks. Place in serving container. Good served with Triscuits, pretzel sticks and pita chips – the dip is fairly thick so dipping items need to be sturdy. Notes, Substitutions and Variations Can be made ahead and refrigerated – also refrigerate any leftovers (if there are any)! www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

I

’ve always loved Seven-Layer Dip and variations on it . . . but it took cruising for me to decide to make my own. I was surprised at how easy it is — and it’s perfect for a special get-together! If I know a get-together is going to last through the dinner hour and snacks are going to stand in for a meal, I often make it with a layer of meat. Use ground beef, ground turkey, shredded chicken (or even soy crumbles) and prepare it just as you would for tacos. A can of chicken can also be shredded and mixed with the taco seasoning. I also like this recipe because I can use whatever “layers” I happen to have on hand . . . sometimes, it’s a 9-layer dip, other times only 4. And since Dave is allergic to dairy, I just make him a separate plate with no sour cream (you can substitute mayonnaise if you want) and no cheese. And if you make your own taco seasoning, it’s gluten free, too (commercial taco seasonings often have gluten). You can also do variations with no ingredients that require refrigeration (see following sour cream recipe). Oh — and if you have to transport the dip (especially by dinghy) or need to refrigerate it for several hours in a crowded refrigerator, make it in a Lock & 33

Lock container as I did. The high sides and secure lid will make it easier than trying to manage a plate covered with plastic wrap!

Mexican Layered Dip Prep Time: 25 mins Total Time: 25 mins

Looking for a “special” appetizer with lots of variations? Mexican Layered Dip is great when appetizers will stand in for a meal!

Notes, Substitutions and Variations Times and servings are all approximate as they depend on the layers used. DAIRY FREE Omit the sour cream and cheese layers. GLUTEN FREE naturally. None of the suggested layers have gluten. Use veggies or other gluten-free items to dip. NO REFRIGERATION make your own sour cream from non-refrigerated ingredients. Omit cheese layer. Other ingredients do not need to be refrigerated.

Course: Appetizers & Snacks Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Mexican/Southwestern, No Refrigeration Servings: 8 Calories: 220 kcal Ingredients 1 can refried beans 16 ounce 2 tbsp taco seasoning (make your own seasoning) Layers – choose as many as you wish 1 cup sour cream (make your own sour cream) OR mayonnaise ½ cup shredded lettuce ½ pound taco meat OR sauteed mushrooms 1 cup shredded cheese, such as cheddar 1 cup chopped tomatoes or substitute ½ cup salsa 4 tbsp green onions, thinly sliced OR substitute ½ cup diced red or white onion ¼ cup minced sweet (bell) pepper any color OR spicy pepper, to taste ¼ cup sliced black olives Instructions If using meat or mushrooms, mix ½ the packet of taco seasoning with the refried beans. If not, mix the entire packet with refried beans. Let sit while preparing other layers. If using meat or mushrooms, saute until browned and then add the remaining taco seasoning and water (if needed). Cook until ready to be used and set aside. To assemble, spread refried bean mix on the plate or other serving container. Spread or sprinkle other layers over the top in the order given – use however many layers you want. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve – may be refrigerated up to 4 hours (after that, some of the veggies may wilt, but it’s still fine to eat). Serve with tortilla chips or crackers. 34

S

our cream is hard to carry on a boat, as it turns green in a week or so even in the refrigerator. And if you don’t have much room in the refrigerator — or no refrigerator at all — it can be impossible. The great thing, though, is that you can quickly and easily make your own from ingredients that are easy to carry and last almost forever! Be sure to check out the video showing exactly how easy it is to make your own sour cream this way! Nestle and several other Latin American dairy companies make a great product called “Media Crema” (literally translates as “half cream” or what we’d call “light cream”). In the US, it almost always comes in cans like the one shown and is generally stocked with the Latin/Mexican foods in larger supermarkets. In Mexico and Central America, you can also buy it (and sometimes “crema” or “heavy cream”) in vacuum-sealed boxes similar to juice boxes, as shown in the second picture (Lala is a huge brand in Mexico). For some reason, I’ve never seen the boxes in the US. I’m told that there are similar products in the Caribbean — if you know of brands and whether it comes in cans or boxes, please add this information to the comments below. Either type of container Wardrobeholds about 8 ounces, or Guest cabin 250 ml — 1 cup. And they both work equally well for MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

making your own sour cream. Best of all, they both last virtually forever (I think they usually have an expiration date of about 6 months away). I found the little boxes easier to stow as they fit tightly together with no wasted space, plus they wouldn’t roll with the motion of the boat. But if you’re in the US, you might not have a choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkiiOqKcOIw Notes, Substitutions and Variations Other types of vinegar, lemon or lime juice, or white wine can be substituted for the white vinegar. It will last 1 to 2 days in the refrigerator. Use it in any recipe, just as you would any other sour cream. Note that this makes 1 cup, or a half pint — many dip recipes call for a pint, so you’d need a double batch.

Sour Cream from Non-Refrigerated Ingredients

Prep Time: 5 mins Let Sit: 30 mins Total Time: 35 mins Make your own sour cream whenever you want it with non-refrigerated ingredients. It’s not a substitute -- it’s REAL sour cream. Course: Appetizers & Snacks, Ingredients Cuisine: American, Gluten-Free, No Refrigeration Servings: 1 cup Calories: 316 kcal Ingredients 1 cup media crema 2 teaspoons white vinegar Instructions Put the contents of the can or box of media crema in a plastic container that has a lid. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vinegar. If you want a thicker sour cream, mix in a second teaspoon after the first teaspoon is mixed in. Don’t use more than 2 teaspoons. You can either use it immediately or, for the best results, put the lid on and refrigerate it for a half hour before using.

Since learning this method, I always keep the ingredients on hand . . . and real, rich, thick sour cream is just minutes away!

BLACK BEAN AND CORN SALSA

L

ooking for a delicious and boat-friendly snack or appetizer? This Black Bean & Corn Salsa is ideal and it even qualifies as a healthy choice. It’s fast to make and even better when made a day or two ahead of time. Two added bonuses are that none of the ingredients need to be refrigerated until you mix it up and there’s nothing to spoil on a hot day. Even better, young kids can help while slightly older children can make it by themselves. Make it as spicy (or not) as you and your guests desire by varying the salsa used. If some people like it mild and other prefer a spicier version, make it mild and then divide it between two dishes and add 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or hot sauce to one. Just be sure to label it as the spicy one! 35

Black Bean and Corn Salsa

Prep Time: 5 mins Total Time: 5 mins Quick and delicious appetizer made from ingredients that don’t require refrigeration. Great for spurof-the-moment get-togethers! Course: Appetizers & Snacks Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Mexican/Southwestern, No Refrigeration Servings: 8 Calories: 206 kcal Ingredients 32 ounces canned black beans, drained and rinsed 32 ounces canned corn, drained 2 cups salsa ¼ teaspoon cumin 1 tablespoon lime or lemon juice 4 tablespoons cilantro, chopped (optional), to taste Instructions Mix all ingredients together. If not serving immediately, refrigerate. Serve with tortilla chips, crackers, pita rounds or even veggie dippers such as baby carrots, cucumber slices or green pepper strips. Notes, Substitutions and Variations Can substitute 2 tomatoes, 1/4 green pepper, 1 spicy pepper (to taste), and 1/4 cup onion, all chopped finely, for the salsa. If a spicier dip is desired, add more cumin and some cayenne pepper or chili powder – or finely chop part of a spicy pepper and add it. Also great over fish, pork chops or chicken. Refrigerate any unused portion.

A

board Que Tal, we loved it whenever we shared an anchorage with a shrimp boat — that meant there was a pretty good chance of having shrimp for dinner! And in mid-July in the Sea of Cortez, when temperatures soared, we doubly loved shrimp as they took almost no time to cook and were a wonderful cold meal. I really didn’t know what to do with fresh shrimp the first time we encountered a shrimp boat. One pulled into our anchorage at Isla San Marcos and our friends Dick and Judi aboard Corazon called on the radio to say that they were going to dinghy over and see if they could buy some shrimp — did we want some? Sure! Dave went with them, armed with the suggested plastic bag. Ten minutes later, he arrived back at Que Tal with about 10 pounds of whole shrimp. Well, this was wonderful, but coming from the Midwest I didn’t have any experience with cooking or cleaning my own shrimp. The last time I’d had shrimp had been at our wedding reception . . . and that had been catered. I dragged out my trusty cookbook — my mom had always taught me that if you could read, you could learn to do anything — and followed the instructions for cleaning shrimp, then cooked about a pound and put the rest in the freezer (thankfully, it was pretty empty right then!). The cleaning went pretty well, but, as with cooking scallops, I learned that the cooking instructions in my cookbook left them rubbery. And again, I turned to other cruisers to teach me how to properly cook shrimp. Over time, I combined advice and methods from numerous friends to come up with the following information on both preparing shrimp and boiling/ steaming it. Preparing Shrimp De-Head the Shrimp. If you get shrimp from a shrimp boat, they’ll undoubtedly still have the heads attached. Just take one shrimp at a time, grab the

36

head firmly between your thumb and index finger and grasp the body in your other hand. Give a quick twist of the head and it should pop right off. Rinse the shrimp in cold water. Two tips here: If you have some disposable latex gloves aboard, this is a good time to use them to keep your hands from smelling like shrimp. Otherwise, rub a little lemon or lime juice over your hands when you’re done to cut the smell. Throw all your “shrimp garbage” in a small bowl and discard it overboard when you’re done. The fish and other sea creatures will eat it and it won’t stink up your boat (and your trash can will smell horrendous if you put it in there!). To De-Vein or Not? You don’t have to de-vein shrimp, but I prefer to. The dark vein running along the shrimp’s back is its gastric vein. Usually they’re small and most people don’t think they make a taste difference. I simply peel the shrimp, then run my thumbnail under the vein to remove it. Most people use a paring knife but I found that my thumbnail was much faster and I almost never broke or cut the vein. My friend Jan, who I wrote The Boat Galley Cookbook with (she also has a website for part-time cruisers called CommuterCRUISER.com) has a little deveining tool that she bought at Wal-mart. She swears that it’s the easiest way to de-vein shrimp. Boiling/Steaming Shrimp The first few times I cooked shrimp, I wanted to be sure that they were cooked through. So I cooked them until they were pink, then a few minutes longer. And then I wondered why they were really tough! The number-one rule with shrimp is not to overcook them. In fact, they’ll cook a little bit more even after you take them out of the water, so you want to cook them only until they are just turning pink. If you get shrimp fresh from a boat, it’s unlikely that they’ll all be the same size. So when I clean them, I try to separate them into rough piles by size. This isn’t an exact science, just putting the really big ones together and the really small ones together, with everything else in their own pile. Then I can cook ones that are about the same size together. My cooking method is pretty simple — and one of the reasons that I really like shrimp in hot weather. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

Total Time: 10 mins Boiled shrimp are a great hot weather meal – delightful tossed on a salad or as shrimp cocktail. The secret is in how you cook them. Course: Appetizers & Snacks, Main Dish Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Fish/Seafood, Gluten-Free, Keto/LCHF, Make-Ahead Servings: 4 (1/4 pound servings) Calories: 119 kcal Ingredients water 2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning 1 pound shrimp (cleaned and prepared) Instructions Put just ½ inch of water in a saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons Old Bay Seasoning or other shrimp boil seasoning and a splash (about 2 tablespoons) of white or cider vinegar. Bring the water and spices to a full rolling boil over high heat. Add up to one pound of medium shrimp, cover and bring back to a full rolling boil. The instant the water starts boiling, turn fire down to low and begin timing 2 minutes very exactly. After two minutes, turn the stove off or remove the pan from the stove if you’re using an electric stove. Time another two minutes – exactly. Drain water from shrimp. There should be a lot of the spices still sticking to the shrimp. You can either serve the shrimp immediately, or put it in the refrigerator to chill for a cold meal later. Notes, Substitutions and Variations NOTE: Large shrimp will take 2-1/2 minutes in each stage and jumbo shrimp 3 to 3-1/2 minutes in each.

Easy Cocktails That Impress

L

ittle known fact about me – for 6 years I worked in cocktail bars (very, very busy cocktail bars). The downside of this is that I am unapologetically snobby about my cocktails. I don’t like my mojitos too sweet, God help you if you go anywhere near my margarita with sour mix, I want my drinks garnished

correctly, I demand quality spirits with clean, fresh ingredients and I mix a mean iced tea (actually about 20 variations thereof). The upside is that I can teach you a few things about mixed drinks. Now, unlike most cocktail guides, I don’t expect everyone to keep a fully stocked bar cart, so I’m listing my favorite recipes based on the four key white spirits. This way, no matter which of the staples you happen to have on hand, you can rustle up a tasty libation.

Tequila – The simplest and most beautiful te-

quila drink (in my humble opinion) is the Paloma. Wonderfully sharp and refreshing – only 5 ingredients required. Tequila Grapefruit Juice Simple Syrup* Club Soda Fresh Lime Juice Mix equal parts grapefruit juice, tequila and club soda (¼ cup) – add a teaspoon of simple syrup and a quarter lime squeezed. Stir and serve over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime or grapefruit. (Salt rim on the glass or a sprig of rosemary are also optional extras). Serve and enjoy! FYI – many recipes will just mix tequila with a grapefruit soda and it is still very tasty, but I’d urge you to try making it from scratch – it is so much better! 40

MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

In fact, I much prefer it when they’re not. A classic daiquiri requires only three ingredients. (Not to be confused with a Hemingway – which is a different variation altogether). A Good White Rum Fresh Lime Juice Simple Syrup* Add two shots of white rum with the juice of one lime and a teaspoon of simple syrup. Shake vigorously over ice and pour into a coupe/martini glass. Enjoy! (This is the only recipe that actually needs a cocktail shaker or any equipment – apologies for that.)

Gin – Elevating the classic G&T with the quint-

essentially British pink gin. Gin Angostura Bitters Fresh Lime Juice Tonic

Add two shots of your preferred gin with five dashes of Angostura bitters and a quarter lime squeezed to a large glass with ice – top with tonic water – stir and serve garnished with a slice of lemon.

*You will have noticed that a couple of these recipes require a simple syrup. Easily made you will need equal parts granulated white sugar and water. Pour one cup boiling water and one cup sugar into a pan on a medium heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Be careful not to let it boil. When dissolved let the syrup cool and pour into a sterilized bottle or jar. It will keep in the fridge for up to a month. Once you have mastered basic simple syrup you can then start exploring herb infusions (basil and rosemary are two of my favorites) but that’s a lesson for another time… So there you have it – a clean and effortless cocktail that you can throw together no matter which spirit you happen to have at home – just in time for the weekend!

Vodka – the secret to this is a good quality (read: fiery) ginger beer – the Moscow mule. Vodka Fresh Lime Juice Ginger Beer Add two shots of your favorite vodka to a tall glass (or copper mug, if you have one) and half a lime squeezed (some recipes call for you to drop the lime shell into your drink – I’ll leave that up to you) and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a wheel of lime and enjoy!

Rum – Ernest Hemingway’s favorite, the classic daiquiri. Not all daiquiris are blended with fruit. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

Delivery by Captain Calvyn

Around the Point: A Sunshine State of Mind Delivery

I

f you have spent years delivering power and sail cats on their own bottom from Cape Town to the Caribbean and Florida, then perhaps delivering a Leopard Powercat from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa might sound more like a vacation to you and less like work. Even more so when your stopovers involve island hopping from one place to the next and your only real worry (assuming your ship runs as well as this yacht did for this particular delivery) is arriving to each fuel dock before it closes for the day. Captain Calvyn, the fearless leader for the delivery, has been delivering Leopard Catamarans on 44

their own bottom and instructing owners on how to use their new toys for over a decade. In this article, Captain Calvyn will provide details on how to imitate this trip. When necessary, the tips provided will be geared towards making the passage for leisure and not work. Or maybe he will just blur the lines all together. This is his Sunshine State Delivery report:

Preparing Your Yacht

I would trust that anyone who is embarking on this journey, or any journey of a reasonable distance on a boat for that matter, would take the time to do engine checks and ensure that all of the

US Coast Guard safety gear has been installed. Basic engine checks on brand new Yanmar engines are very straight forward. You want to inspect the levels of the gear box oil, engine oil and coolant. Both the gearbox and engine have a dipstick, which is easily located and has markings that are clearly visible and indicate your optimum fluid levels. Keep in mind that gearbox oil and engine oil are not the same thing. Checking the coolant level is also quite simple. The coolant filler cap is located on top of the engine. You can open the cap to check the level and fill up almost to the top if this is required. There is also an over flow

MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

container for the coolant, which should be topped to the indicated lines on the container. As we were dealing with a brand new engine, the racor, which separates water from fuel, should be clear. The racor in this instance is a clear glass bowl, in which you can see the diesel, however not all racors are clear. They may be an enclosed unit that you cannot see into. The Leopard 43 PC for this delivery had been pulled off the freighter coming from Cape Town, SA only late in the day, one day prior to setting off. Luckily, what she lacked in cleanliness on the exterior after three weeks on a freighter, she made up for on performance and indoor comfort. One of the first things I noticed was that this yacht had something that I have not yet seen on a Leopard Catamaran. Half of the instrument switch panel was on a digital switching screen where each instrument had an on/off button on the touch screen. The screen could also show your fuel levels, water levels, and much more. One very handy thing about this, although I could name many, is the “Leave Your Boat” feature where when you are ready to head out for the evening and you select this button, everything will switch off on the boat except for the floor lights outside, the air con and the fridge/ freezer. This made leaving the boat quick and simple. And these features can be adjusted to your personal preferences if for example, you would prefer to not run the air con when you are not aboard. Of course it goes with out saying that you will want to stock the boat with some food. Delivering a new yacht requires that captain and crew bring their own stove

for cooking. Because this trip was rather short and evenings are spent in a marina, we opted to make sandwiches for lunch and eat dinner on land. Weather is going to be another thing you will need to keep an eye on. For anyone making this trip for fun, you have the luxury of leaving as you please. When there is a time sensitive matter, for example getting a yacht to a boat show in time for move in, I cannot always be so lucky – the job has to get done. One website I recommend for checking the weather is www. passageweather.com, but there are other good ones out there too, for example www.windguru.cz. One more thing I should mention before we depart is that you could also get from point A (South Flor-

ida) to Point B (the Bay Area) via the Okeechobee Waterway. Due to the current conditions in Lake Okeechobee, it was decided that the best route would be to go around Florida instead of through it. Although, if you are planning to come back to South Florida you might consider taking the route home this way to complete the full circle. You could consider it a practice round in preparations for completing the Great Loop.

Fort Lauderdale to Marathon, 115nm

Wake up, fuel up, crank up the RPMs and go. Or just take it slow – the choice is completely up to you. The first stop on the first leg of the journey is going to be Faro Blanco Marina in Marathon, FL.

Don’t get distracted by the city lights of Miami because if you are anything like me you will appreciate the Florida Keys much more. If you maintain a cruising speed of 15 to 17 knots you can make this leg of the journey in about seven hours. If fuel consumption is a concern of yours, by all means take it slow and enjoy the ride. While the fuel dock at Faro Blanco doesn’t close until 7pm, it also opens up again at 7am, providing time either at the end of your day or the start of your day to fuel up for your next leg. Marathon took a beating during Hurricane Irma, but after a little down time everything is fully operational again at Faro Blanco. The service from the team that works there was top-notch. They set us up with a splitter to convert our two 30 amps into one 50 amp, and to fill up with water they supplied a hose that was not conveniently located, but the staff kindly hauled it out to the slip. During this delivery the wind on day one was less than favorable leaving Ft. Lauderdale. But once we were in the Hawk Channel, which is the route between the islands and the outer reef of the Keys, the outer reefs provided a protection from the wind. 46

You should be aware that on this route you will be surrounded by reefs and crab pots. You will notice towers marking reefs. You can keep your eyes open for crab pots, although they will be nearly impossible to avoid completely. When coming into Marathon you will go under the Seven Mile Bridge, which crosses both Knight Key Channel and Moser Channel between Marathon (Vaca Key) and Little Duck Key. The bridge is fixed with a 65-foot vertical clearance across Moser Channel. If you are in a sailboat do your research! Should you leave South Florida at a reasonable time, you can make a pit stop at the Alligator Reef Lighthouse. Here you can grab a mooring ball and discover beautiful snorkeling around the lighthouse. If you have a drone, this will be the perfect place for a photo op. Once in the marina, you can relax by the pool or grab dinner at the marina restaurant... only after washing all of the salt spray and seaweed off of your boat of course...

Marathon to Marco Island, 100nm

Today’s run should be calmer than yesterday, but we had to go

south to go north. The Faro Blanco Marina measures your electricity consumption when you are departing, so you will need to go to the office in the morning when they open to pay up on your usage. It shouldn’t set you back more than $8 or $9. After you check the weather and your engines, go ahead and get underway. Today’s destination will be the Rose Marina on Marco Island. Again, call ahead for space, especially if you are making this trip during high season. The folks working the fuel dock were very helpful in getting us fueled up and then helped us move into our slip for the evening. You can make a run to the local Publix grocery store, which is a 15-minute walk away should you need to re-up on any food or supplies. If you are in need of contact with humans who you have not been on a boat with for two days, for recommendations on dinner you could head to Snook Inn, which will be the restaurant with a small marina that you saw on your way in, but be prepared to wait – it is a popular spot. If you want to walk somewhere for a quick bite, the Dolphin Tiki Bar & Grill was recommended by a few locals.

Marco Island to Tampa Bay, 140nm

The last leg of this journey brought us into the in the Tampa Bay area. Because of the distance you will want to get going as early as possible this morning. Unfortunately, on the final stretch of this delivery Tropical Storm Gordon decided to rear his ugly head. And while it was a bit of an inconvenience enduring wind and rain the entire day, this was still a breeze in comparison to weather that I have witnessed 1,500 miles off the coast.

MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

With that being said, it is important to take the weather very seriously. The storm was a bit of a surprise considering it developed quickly and came out of nowhere. Thankfully, this particular yacht was equipped with indoor nav station that included throttles, chart platter and auto pilot, so fortunately for myself and the crew, we were able to stay indoors and we never had to put our foul weather gear to use. And although the foul weather gear was never used, you should always show up prepared because you never know what might happen. In addition to gear, I should mention that you should always bring a good supply of tools with you too. Taking into consideration the forecast for today, I opted to take the passage slow and hug the coastline. This allowed for a smooth and

somewhat relaxing ride. I turned up the tunes, stayed at the helm station inside and took the long day slow and easy. There was one window of weather in which I was able to catch some cooler air on the flybridge, but that was short lived and it was back inside to ride out the remainder of the day. I was able to secure a slip this evening at Harbouridge Marina in St. Petersburg, FL. This quiet marina is conveniently located 18nm from the Tampa Convention Center – the yacht’s final destination. If this itinerary is a vacation for you, St. Pete has a lot to offer, most of which is in walking distance from the Harbouridge Marina, so you might consider staying for a day or two to explore the downtown area.

What is next for this Captain?

I intended to spend the next few months delivering yachts to boat shows around the eastern US and delivering yachts for new buyers, I’ll do that in addition to instructing new sailors on how to sail and operate their yachts. While I don’t frequent the long Atlantic deliveries anymore, what has changed in recent years is that all of the Leopard Catamarans are delivered to Fort Lauderdale by freighter nowadays. When those ships arrive to South Florida I am there to assist in the offload and delivery of the boats, but a one hour delivery from the port to the marina is vastly different than the 45-day deliveries that kick-started my career. Gemini’s Complete Range of Use E

volution in the boating industry comes with a huge cost. Revamping existing models and developing totally new ones to stay current with boater’s needs costs millions of dollars in R&D and retooling. But at the upcoming 2019 Miami Boat Show, Gemini Catamarans is set to show one of the biggest evolutions in the industry – A complete range of catamarans all built on the same hull! “A Complete Range of Use” is the expression that keeps popping up at Gemini Catamaran’s headquarters. It’s an ideology that is putting Gemini at the forefront of giving owners what they need in their cockpit. It has allowed Gemini to be the only market leader in this area. But what exactly is a “Range of Use”? Gemini’s range of use provides buyers with the creature comforts they cannot find on any other boat—both power and sail—under 40’. But it also opens up hundreds of different cockpit applications—both in the commercial and pleasure ends of boating. This new line allows the entire range to sport flexible and convertible deck layouts for power, sail, day charter, ferry, houseboat, mobile office or even AirBNB! This is possible only on their tried and true catamaran hull due to its stability.

Thirty-eight years ago Gemini Catamarans sold its first cat. Since then, Gemini’s cats have circled the globe logging hundreds of thousands of miles. There is a long history with Gemini Catamarans, but with the introduction of this new Range of Use platform… a single boat can encompass many different needs, and with this, the company has embarked on a new really exciting transition. To be the industry leader, staying current with brilliant innovative ideas has never been easy; but without their history Gemini Catamarans wouldn’t be able to pull off this change the way boaters and sailors need. Imagine being able to create a cockpit that would allow you to commercially ferry passengers in the morning and then in the afternoon change it up to take other customers fishing? Imagine a boat that has the square footage the size of a small NYC apartment that can be used as an office, a guest house, even a revenue-generating AirBNB floating hotel… there are literally hundreds of customizable configurations possible with Gemini Catamaran’s new line up. That’s what the new line of Gemini Catamarans can do! Three of the four-boat range is being shown at the 2019 Miami Boat Show:

The world famous 2019 Legacy 35x is their flagship product. The Legacy 35’s hull design has been the defacto standard in catamaran design for 38 years. Slippery in the water, super stable, fast, fuel efficient, with a 14’ beam and 34” draft, the Legacy 35 is the best catamaran anywhere under 40’. It can fit in a standard slip, be hoisted by regular travel lifts, and be trucked anywhere. The interior of the Legacy 35x is so well thought out…well, things are just where they should be. It has all of the essential amenities for the “sailor’s sailor.” From a stand-up shower, to a galley that can really whip out some great meals…to a large and spacious deck…you’ll understand why this boat is the leader in its size. It’s priced super competitively… but looks and feels like a boat costing much more. The Freestyle 37 Sailboat is where the “Range of Use” mantra began. Imagine the first truly “opencockpit concept sailboat” that can hold a family, group of friends, or large parties with ease. This is only possible with a catamaran due to its stability. What distinguishes the Freestyle 37 Sailboat is its dynamic ability for its captain to change the deck layout to suit his/her needs. From charter uses to personal use, you can actually change the deck layout…why be stuck with

52

permanently placed bench seats? Freestyle 37s are currently in service from Cancun to Cabo San Lucas, the Great Lakes, and in California, Maryland and Florida. The Freestyle 37 is the ultimate play boat. Come to the Boat Show and see this amazing innovation. The Power 399 Catamaran completely took the boating industry by surprise. This was Gemini Catamaran’s first power catamaran. It’s a hot looking boat and features all of the same open and ergonomically adjustable deck layout as the Freestyle 37…which will make any power boater envious. The Power 399 can be designed to work as a day charter, ferry boat,

Freestyle 37

fishing boat, island hopper, personal use or floating bar…just let your imagination run wild. The Power 399 is a stable and beautiful addition to the Gemini lineup and is a consistent long lasting workhorse. It’s fast too – cruising with seven people at 15 knots while lightly sipping fuel. The Studio Model is set to debut at the Annapolis show this spring. This is Gemini Catamaran’s newest addition to the company’s line of boats. Just think, every Studio sold comes guaranteed with a water view. Now imagine this: The Studio model is the size of a luxury studio apartment in NYC. With almost 750 square feet of living and deck space it can be used as a family powerboat, houseboat, office on the water, AirBNB studio, marina hotel room, guest dock house, or just about anything you can imagine. There are so many revenue opportunities for the Studio. Marinas can fill empty slips and instead of billing $300+ a month for a slip, marinas can make $250-$500 a day renting the Studio out. Best of all it incorporates Gemini’s four decades of experience into its production. Be sure to see the Studio featured in an upcoming issue of MULTIHULLS!

The Gemini Catamaran line navigates in more varied waters than any other boat on the market today. The combination of shallow draft, high fuel efficiency, and stable deck characteristics, allow all the boats in the line to navigate the Intracoastal, traverse the ocean, or to be able to drop anchor near beaches where you can wade to shore. The Gemini Catamaran line remains on the top of the industry’s list of catamarans to buy in its size. For more information, visit: www.geminicatamarans. com or e-mail: yachtsales@catamarans.com MM

The Making of One of South Africa’s Most Successful Yacht Designers: Anton du Toit’s Story

F

Anton du Toit

by Bobby Jordan

or a man who translates billionaire dreams into line drawings, there is something surprisingly understated about Anton Du Toit. One of South Africa’s top yacht designers sits opposite me in a K-way sweater and nondescript shirt, framed by yacht designs on a pin-board behind his head. He is calm, courteous, and initially says very little, preferring to listen. The man with the carbon fiber touch is measuring me, expert that he is, bit by bit and inside out, assessing the dimensions of the job at hand in the same expert manner that explains why his designs are earning accolades faster than a billfish through the Pacific. One suspects it is a habit that has thrust him onto the prow of global yacht design, where attention to detail requires powers of observation forged across decades of sailing experience. His Balance 526, a collaboration with Multihull Company founder Phil Berman and countryman Jonathan Paarman, won Cruising World’s “Import Boat of the Year” and also “Best Multihull

Over 50 feet.” It has more eye-catching features than a Parisian fashion show, and the brains behind it, is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Even Anton’s office is under-stated, as if he prefers to stay out of the limelight. To find him one must navigate a maze of streetlights and curbs in Cape Town’s northern residential suburbs. There is no sign in front of his house, no billboard or Southern Spar mast sticking up above the chimney. Inside his studio abuts a quiet garden and is neatly partitioned into half-a-dozen work units. It is here where Anton has produced some of his most celebrated designs, such as the Balance 526, the Two Oceans Open Ocean 800 and a fleet of other cruising and performance catamarans. It is here he also hopes to build on that success, expanding his operation at a time when many are cutting back. However, to better understand the secret to Anton’s success involves looking past the front office to catch a glimpse of his extraordinary life-story, which includes 14 years of sailing around Drawing in the saloon of Phayet the world on his father’s yacht, a journey that started when he was just 13 years old. Anton’s parents bought a Tartan 46 Sparkman & Stephens design with the proceeds from the sale of the arable portion of their farm in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, and set off on a family odyssey with their three children. Anton was in eighth grade at the time, which remains the high-water mark of his formal education. The straight-talking South African, who has zero formal design training, believes his practical training in the marinas and yacht ports of the world taught him most of what he needed to know. “I only did one year of high school,” Anton recalls. “My folks bought a boat in the States. We had to participate in an international race so as not to pay sales tax, so they sailed the boat back, took us out of boarding school and we did the 1976 Cape to Rio Race.” The race turned out to be the “In France we started doing black work – varnishing start of their family travels, first to Mauritius and other people ‘s boats or maintaining them. yacht design: “I managed to persuade my parents to buy it for me and from then on I was keen on becoming a designer.” His passion was regularly fuelled by the sight of spectacular vessels arriving or departing, each one reshaping Anton’s nascent design style: “We were keen on boats and all the latest designs that came out. If a new boat came in we would always go in the dingy, us brothers, and go and ask the guys if we could take a tour of the boat. We did that wherever we were – anchorages and marinas in Greece and Italy and wherever.” Anton quickly realized he would need to supplement his practical skill with technical knowledge. Fortunately, he had access to libraries while based in the US: “I would spend my Saturdays and Sundays and in the city library, studying textbooks on engineering – that is where I learned all my engineering stuff from,” he recalls, adding that the more conventional route of yacht design school wasn’t available to him. “My father told me that if I didn’t get a matric (high school diploma) he would not be sending me to university. It would have been fantastic to go to South Hampton Yacht Design School, but it would also have cost a lot of money. That route wasn’t really available to me, so I just had to get on with it.” The no-nonsense hands-on approach was clearly 66

no deterrent for the young Anton, who was by then accustomed to doing things his own way. He credits his father, Pierre, with encouraging a do-it-yourself philosophy of life that continues to bear fruit: “You have to learn as you go along – if you want to know something you have to go out and find it.” It was also an attitude that paid dividend when the family returned to Cape Town where he was able to gain valuable work experience with several local companies, starting off with Angel Lavranos for two and a half years and culminating in a six-year stint with Southern Wind. These too were formative years, says Anton: “It was a helleva good experience. Everything you do at a boat yard like that, you just absorb it and use it in the future. That’s all it is about: finding out what you need to know.” The same is true for boat building in general, Anton adds: “If you have to know something you find out what you need. At certain times you don’t have time to do it and then you have to get a consultant, but in general that is seldom the case.” Anton is by no means the only practical designer who eschewed formal training; some of the biggest South African names in the business entered the profession via the proverbial back door, including US-based designer Dudley Dicks, John Shuttleworth and Angelo Lavranos. Some acclaimed designers were not even experienced sailors, Anton points out: “It helps to be an experienced sailor, but I know of a lot of very good designers who’ve never really sailed. But it does help with practical aspects.” Anton unconventional background is fondly remembered by one of his clients, Krasni Sutic, one of South Africa’s most experienced skippers. He recalls paying Anton and his brother the ‘princely sum’ of $10 to prepare his yacht for charter during the family’s years in St. Thomas in the Caribbean: “I was not surprised, considering their integrity, that they divulged their new-found fortune to their father,” Sutic recalls. “I was even less surprised that he promptly appropriated the money, for food and lodging, he said.” “Hearing that they had been working for no reward, I raised their pay to $20. Pierre got wind of this, and once more grabbed the loot. He claimed inflation was rampant, thus had to increase board. Fortunately, Dad relented and allocated their share to the boys. Anton wisely used his funds to pursue his dream of one day designing yachts. The rest is history.” MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjiqzgQX8P0

Would Anton ever give it all up again and head for the open ocean? Maybe. Concludes Anton: “When I first got back I thought I never want to go cruising again. Now I want to.” Which begs the question: if Anton could design a boat for himself, what would it be? No hesitation. “I already have the design in my head: a 45-foot to 50-foot monohull, traditional style boat with a modern under-body and a Transpac sleeper. Lots of deck space, big open cockpit to lounge around in, nice little coach roof, lots of sail and an open interior with no bulkheads.” Keep a look out for him on the other side of the horizon. Leopard Catamarans’ Highly Anticipated Leopard 50

W

ith versatility in mind, we bring to you the next generation of Leopard Catamarans, the Leopard 50. She has been designed to replace one of the best-selling Leopard Catamarans of all time, the award-winning Leopard 48. In partnership with the superior design team at Robertson and Caine and the distinguished Simonis & Voogd Yacht Design, Leopard Catamarans set the standard for what a cruising catamaran should encompass.

Her versatility begins with the option to choose the classic hardtop exterior configuration (Leopard 50P), or for the first time on a Leopard Catamaran of this size, an optional flybridge accommodation (Leopard 50L). The Leopard 50L is the ideal layout for anyone looking for more outdoor living space as she comes equipped with a flybridge that includes a lounge area, table, sunbed and optional exterior speakers and shade awning. Floating stairs leading up from the aft cockpit provides access.

An important distinction compared to similar sailboat flybridge configurations is that while under sail, passengers can move about the flybridge with ample headroom and never worry about interference from the boom. The flybridge is also situated to still maintain contact with the hard top helm station; an important feature found on all Leopard Catamarans. Sailors looking for the familiar, continuous hardtop can opt for the Leopard 50P. This version does not have the flybridge and can deliver increased performance particularly when fitted with the offered square-top www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

mainsail and other available performance-orientated rigging and sail options. With either version, the entire exterior styling of the Leopard 50 has also been revamped to give the hull a more sophisticated look. In addition to the exterior options, the interior offers multiple layout configurations with 4 or 5 cabins, and an extensive options list. While the exterior of the yacht has been enhanced, Naval Architect for Simonis Voogd Design, Alexander Simonis, tells us this: “Most of the work has 79

been done ‘under the bonnet’ so to say by advances made in the construction geometry of the new 50. To create the beautiful open plan layouts and the near 360-degree view from the saloon area, while at the same time have a strong and stiff yacht that is not too heavy, requires advanced engineering solutions. The new 50 makes use of carbon-infused ring frames in the most critical areas to achieve this. This type of construction has been pioneered on the larger, allcarbon racing catamarans and is now successfully being applied in this Leopard cruising catamaran

80

so that we can offer the best possible mix between comfort, space and performance.” The hardtop covered helm station is still located in the classic position – raised and to starboard. You will be protected and secure at sea as you communicate easily from the helm station with the aft cockpit and flybridge. A staple in all new Leopard models, the forward facing settee, situated aft, allows for direct communication with the forward facing galley. The saloon is finished off with a saloon sized overhead skylight, and the signature forward cockpit is accessible from

the saloon through a weather-tight door. True to the Leopard pedigree, the Leopard 50 emphasizes functional open spaces and ease of handling. In addition to private ownership through Leopard Catamarans, this yacht will be available for

ownership through the Moorings Yacht Ownership Program, as the Moorings 5000. The Leopard 50 will also be available for charter vacations in select destinations worldwide through The Moorings. MM

OYAGE yachts has taken their popular and most recent model, the VOYAGE 480, to a new level by equipping it with the Silent Electric Autonomy (SEA) integrated network of systems from OCEANVOLT. While VOYAGE Yachts manufactures semi-custom yachts for the private market, this new VOYAGE 480, which is called “electrified,” is joining the VOYAGE Charters fleet in the British Virgin Islands, and will be available in Tortola in February 2019 for vacation rentals as a “bareboat” or with a captain (and even a chef if you like!). Chartering a yacht through VOYAGE Charters is a great way for anyone interested in possibly owning a VOYAGE yacht to try it out first. For more information about their charter program, visit: http://www.voyagecharters.com

This electric version of the VOYAGE 480 uses twin electric motors for propulsion and a large bank of batteries to power all is systems and equipment, which includes air conditioning and a reverse-osmosis water desalination plant. The twin electric motors provide equivalent power to 45hp diesel engines but with no discernible

Mission

The Leopard 43 PC has the onboard space and layout that many have come to expect from catamarans, which seems to suggest an island-hopping itinerary with friends and family, but make no mistake, these boats are oceangoing cruisers. She is ideal for the bareboat charter trade.

Back Story

Robertson and Caine, the largest boatbuilder in South Africa, had formed a partnership with the Moorings in 1994 to manufacture sailboat catamarans for its charter fleet. In 2000, the Leopard brand sail cats started. Leopard built its first power catamaran in 2007, the 47PC, and quickly followed with the 37PC. The boats sold under the Leopard brand are for private owners, and the evolution of powercat design from the Leopard 37PC to the Leopard 39PC to the 43PC is evident in many features. The South African builder has long made a habit of delivering boats on its own bottom from Cape Town to the Caribbean and beyond. Leopard Catamarans and the Moorings are both owned by Travelopia, which is owned by global investment firm KKR. 89

Detailed Inspection Swim Platform

We boarded the boat from the dock to one of the boat’s two swim platforms, one located at the aft end of each hull. The port side swim platform has a reboarding ladder that is hinged and folds intact onto the swim deck, and is designed to be grabbed and deployed from in the water.

Aft Deck

Up a couple of steps from the swim platform, there’s a wide aft deck that stretches between the aft bulwarks. Shore power hookups are on the port side. In this platform are hatches to port, which lead to a compartment that contains the 9 kW Northern Lights genset, and to starboard, a hatch leads to stowage space.

The swim platforms extend 5’2” (1.58 m) from the aft end of each hull. The steps on the aft deck lead to the side decks, the swim platform, and the flying bridge.

There’s a freshwater, pull-out shower recessed and behind a hatch in the bulwarks on the portside swim platform stairs.

The space between the swim platforms is reserved for tender stowage, and there is a tubular stainless davit (optional, $4,635) affixed to stainless steel vertical pillars that extend from the aft deck to the flying bridge overhang. The davit is operated by cables attached to a winch in the overhead and controlled by a switch in the overhead on centerline.

A genset in a hush box is located aft in the port hull, under a gasketed hatch with a stainless gas-assist ram and a turn-andlock latch.

Sturdy stainless steel posts support the flying bridge overhang, which shades the aft deck, and has 6’7” (2.01 m) of headroom clearance. Canvas/isinglass curtains ($1,391), stowed in covers, are snapped to the overhead all around the aft deck and can be unrolled to provide shade or shelter as required.

Seating

This tubular stainless steel dinghy davit lowers on cables at the touch of a button on the overhead.

90

There’s a molded U-shaped settee with fabric-covered seat cushions ($2,936) situated around a composite dining table on two fixed pedestals. The aft section of the settee has a backrest that is designed to flip forward, creating an aft-facing seat looking out to the area where guests and children would likely swim at anchor. There’s a bench seat opposite. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

This aft deck welcomes guests for an al fresco lunch, followed by an afternoon of lounging.

Much of the aft deck seating has stowage for gear underneath.

Side Decks

Catamarans generally have deck space galore for their LOA, thanks to the large beam measurement, and the Leopard 43 PC is no exception. Her side decks are 29” (73.66 cm) wide at their narrowest point. But even more than just good footing on this stable platform, the side decks have a tall, 1 ½” (3.81 cm) diameter tubular bowrail, and grab handles along the house top to facilitate safe movement around the boat.

Our test captain and a Leopard representative show the aft-facing seat in action.

A bench seat to starboard rounds out the seating on the aft deck…

Grab handles, a bow rail, and flush hatches in the side decks make it very easy to get around on the Leopard 43 PC.

Foredeck Access

…and has dedicated, vented propane stowage underneath.

One aspect of the Leopard 43 PC that we found particularly appealing is the direct access on the centerline to the foredeck from the salon and galley. On a pleasant evening at anchor, the foredeck is a terrific spot to take in the sea breeze, and the forward door prevents the entire family from needing to traipse around the superstructure on the side decks, wide and pleasant as they are. Another advantage to this door is ventilation, to the degree where it can make the air conditioning, and therefore the genset, are unnecessary.

www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

91

The forward door from the salon and galley to the foredeck makes it even easier to get around on the Leopard 43 PC.

The Foredeck

The foredeck measures 7’ (2.13 m) fore and aft, and scuppers provide drainage all around. Just forward of the wide, flat, vertical forward windows, which are made of tempered glass, the aft section is elevated and is shaded by a brow and sections of bulkhead to either side. It is designed for cushions when not underway for laying out. This aft section has hatches where the water tanks, stowage, the windlass, and ground tackle are concealed. The foredeck has small benches at each forward corner, welded into the corner of the all-around bowrail. There’s a toe rail all around as well, and cleats are mounted to it to either side of each bow and along the forward edge of the foredeck, precluding the need for fairleads and also mitigating a trip hazard for those getting around.

The port side water tank is easily accessible in this wide opening locker.

The starboard water tank is in a large locker with substantial stowage volume.

Seats in the forward corners of the bow rail give scale to the large open space. The shady area of the foredeck adds another social space. The vertical windshield looks odd, but by eliminating a raked windshield saves lots of valuable space both inside and out.

The ground tackle is deployed from here, under a hatch, with a wired remote operating a Lewmar windlass through an anchor roller at the forward end of the locker.

92

Flying Bridge

Access to the flying bridge is from a set of stairs on the aft deck outboard and then make a 90-degree right turn so climbers emerge onto the flying bridge facing aft. The flying bridge on the Leopard 43 PC is definitely a gathering spot for the entire crew and has the most open space for social gathering. With a substantial hardtop with 6’9” (2.06 m) headroom covering much of the upper deck, the space is protected and can even be enclosed by curtains all around. The helm is to starboard forward, with a bench seat. Opposite is a U-shaped settee with cocktail table, with an al fresco galley with sink aft. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

There’s a sun pad on the forward rooftop measuring 6’3” by 5’2” (1.91 m by 1.58 m). It extends beyond the flying bridge surround, and it has a grab rail all around it, as well as grabrails on the raised section of the surround to either side. This should only be used when the boat is at rest.

The flying bridge has good cover from its molded hardtop, which provides shelter and 6’9” (2.06 m) headroom and is held up by fiberglass aft by diagonal columns and forward stainless steel supports, none of which impinge on sightlines.

The stairs make a right turn as our test captain ascends to the flying bridge, hanging on to the vertical grab bar. Note the tubular stainless steel supports in an open riser design which is sturdy but maintains better lines of sight.

This U-shaped lounge will let a large group keep the helmsman company and has stowage beneath the seats.

The forward flying bridge sun pad has grabrail all around.

The flying bridge will be a very popular spot for family and friends to gather for cruising.

Helm

The al fresco galley console on the flying bridge has a grabrail for safety and a stainless steel sink. There’s stowage beneath as well as a refrigerator and icemaker. An optional grill on the counter is available. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

The helm console is situated forward and to starboard on the flying bridge. The remote microphone to the Raymarine VHF is mounted on the port side of the console. On the helm dash, the wheel is to starboard and has a compass mounted above on the top of the console. To port of the wheel is a wide shelf with a fiddle to keep binoculars and other odds and ends in position. There’s a bank of switches at the top port side of the console. A Fusion stereo control head and covered USB and 12-volt receptacles are on the dash. There are two Raymarine Multifunction displays flush93

mounted on the helm dash as well, and an autopilot control is positioned right above the wheel. To starboard of the wheel, we find another fiddled shelf, a Yanmar engine display, the engine throttle and shift control, as well as engine start-stops mounted on the inboard side of the bridge surround. A pair of large beverage holders are positioned down low, aft of the engine control binnacle.

Salon

The main deck salon and galley area can be entered from the foredeck or the aft deck. There’s an L-shaped lounge with a folding leaf dining table on a high-low pedestal so it can be lowered and used with a filler cushion to create an additional berth for guests. The aft bulkhead here is made up of a sliding glass door to starboard that offers access from the cockpit. Two glass windows abaft the salon settee slide to port to open up much of the aft bulkhead to the cockpit.

The helm has excellent lines of sight.

The open aft-bulkhead door and windows create an indoor-outdoor space that many boaters enjoy.

The helm seat is a single bench for two with a wraparound backrest. We would prefer the bench seat to adjust fore and aft instead of being stationary.

Interior

The salon and galley basically share the interior main deck space evenly, with the navigation station and the electrical panel rounding out the open space that allows easy movement by several people at a time.

The salon table has folding leaves to keep it from being in the way when serving a smaller group or when people are moving through the salon on their way fore and aft.

This layout shows the deck plans for the shared space of the main deck as well as the accommodations within each hull for the four-stateroom layout. This layout is ideal for bareboat chartering.

True to her cruising heritage, the Leopard 43 PC has in-sole stowage in the salon.

94

MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

Three boxes in the sole have removable lids and offer additional stowage for provisions and gear. To port and starboard amidships are the companionway stairs to the accommodations on the lower deck within each hull.

Docking Helm

Inside the cabin on the port side is the navigation station which faces forward. It has a throttle-and-shift binnacle mounted on a flat chart table. An autopilot control head, mounted on the forward bulkhead is within relatively easy reach. In shorthanded docking, the captain can use the binnacle to move the boat into position and then get forward quickly to manage the tie-up. For this procedure, it would help if the door opened to starboard, instead of to port, for going forward. The chart table has a locker beneath the lid to stow cruising guides and navigation gear. A stool stows out of the way in its corner and also contains stowage under its removable top cushion. We’d like to see a little padding on the polished stainless safety railing that serves as a backrest.

The small navigation table facing forward by the centerline door to the bow has a control binnacle for docking.

Electrical Panel

The electrical panels are contained in a locker with a tinted-glass door. In this panel are inverter controls, the VHF main unit, engine and genset controls, panels for 120-volt AC and 12-volt DC system, airconditioning controls, and the control head for the Fusion stereo.

The glass covering of the panel ensures that an astute skipper will notice any warning signs, but the glow of the digital readouts will not affect the salon’s ambience. Note the large air conditioning grate behind the electrical panel at left.

into it, and the galley is closed by the door to the foredeck. On the starboard side, the counter has a three-burner gas cooktop equipped with sea rails, and an oven.

The L-shaped counter and cabinets of the galley have stowage in drawers and bins. Even though this boat is very stable, we’d like to see high fiddles all around the counter’s edge.

Galley

The galley is located at the starboard forward end of the salon and features an L-shaped Corian counter with lockers beneath. There’s an underhung stainless sink with a single-lever stainless faucet. The large Dedicated trashcans are a good idea on a boat geared for large forward window has a rectangular opening port set groups. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

95

The guest stateroom in our test boat had full headroom, unlike the typical 43’ (13.11 m) monohull guest stateroom. What’s more, there is a third stateroom that few 43’ monohulls have. At the end of the day, this cat has the same or more actual square footage of accommodation space as we find in a typical 43’ monohull.

Starboard Master Suite

A covered sink in the counter corner serves as a concealed drying rack handy to the main sink. It can also be used for storage.

Accommodations

Staterooms: Cat vs. Monohull

Perhaps the hardest for thing for boaters used to monohull cruisers to get their head around is the very different shape of the staterooms in a catamaran. Typically a 43’ (13.11 m) cruiser will have two staterooms and one or two heads. Generally, the master is forward in the bow, and the guest stateroom is under the bridge deck amidships, usually with a stand-up entrance and a crawl in bed or beds. The master is narrow at the head and wider aft where the head is, but not quite as wide as the maximum beam. The guest stateroom is often full-beam, which might be 13’ to 15’ (3.96 m to 4.57 m), generally.

A set of four molded stairs lead down the companionway to the master suite. On our test boat, this owner’s stateroom takes up the entire starboard hull of this catamaran, and consists of a sleeping compartment with the berth aft, a dressing area amidships, and a head forward.

The layout seen here is the one we tested – a three-stateroom version.

On the Leopard 43 PC, the staterooms are just a little over 6’ (1.83 m) wide, making them narrower than either stateroom in a typical monohull of similar length. But, in the case of the master stateroom on our test boat, there is quite a bit of deck space between the bed and the head. This turns out to be far more room than we find at the foot of a bed in a forward cabin of this size of a monohull. Virtually none have a vanity/desk, much less one as big as that on the Leopard 43 PC. Plus there is much more deck space for changing clothes and moving around. And, the heads are about the same size. 96

The entire space of the starboard hull is given over to owner comfort in the master suite. It is clearly more comfortable than the forward cabin of most 43’ monohulls. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

The sleeping compartment in the master suite is aft and features a crawl-in berth. The space avoids a cave-like feel with an elongated hullside window outboard, an integral, framed opening portlight, and another opening portlight aft. An electric fan situated at the foot of the berth helps ventilate the space even more, and there’s an overhead hatch that can be opened for ventilation, and also serves as an escape route. There are two LED reading lamps over the head of the berth and the inboard side of the berth has a pair of shelves along the berth for stowing odds and ends. We’d like to see electrical outlets and USB ports here for cell phones and iPads.

The owner’s stateroom berth measures 59” (1.50 m) wide and 78” (1.98 m) long, with 3’7” (1.09 m) headroom over the berth.

Moving fresh air around is sometimes an excellent alternative to air conditioning. There’s also an overhead hatch for air and egress.

The amidships dressing area has 6’2” (1.88 m) of headroom and is finished in laminate with solid-wood trim, and has a sole finished in laminate. The area has a dressing table or desk with stowage bins beneath lids, a fold-up vanity mirror, and a stool that stows underneath. There’s a hanging locker and a locker with shelves, as well as a chest of drawers. Because the companionway to the stateroom is open wide at the top, the sliding door has a large panel to cover it, but it all slides out of the way unobtrusively, and slides into position where it can be locked, both open and closed. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

A combination desk and dressing table with stool and chest of drawers are flanked by a hanging locker aft, at right, and a locker of shelves, forward, to the left.

Within the master suite, the sole has numerous lockers that offer stowage.

The companionway is closed off with a sliding door shaped to ensure privacy. Note the top section that angles overhead.

Master Head

The head compartment is at the forward end of the amidships dressing area and has 6’4” (1.93 m) of headroom. The compartment has a door that swings in. The marine toilet is outboard as we enter and there’s a hullside window with an integral framed portlight for ventilation. Inboard is a vanity with Corian top, a sink, stowage, a shaving mirror and in the locker beneath, the holder for the toilet-paper roll on the back of the door. A dedicated trashcan is hinged on the bottom. 97

The head is finished with a fiberglass liner for easy cleaning.

The engine is beneath the berth, under a lid that raises with electric rams.

The head makes the most of the space with such design elements as the offset faucet and the vanity counter extending into the shower to serve as a shelf.

A light on the bed substructure makes engine inspections easier, and the lid is insulated for sound and heat.

The shower has a glass door with stainless hinges and a European style wand spray nozzle with single-lever mixer. The shower sump has an automatic drainage system. At the forward end of the shower compartment is a hatch in the bulkhead that offers access to a washer-dryer combo unit.

Service points such as, left to right, the coolant overflow tank, sea strainer, and fuel-water separator are easy to see and reach as they are mounted prominently on the upper outboard side of the engine compartment. This makes daily fluid checks easy and quick. The engine room is extremely tight, but operators are not going to be working on the engine in any case.

Leopard put a welcome combination laundry machine behind a door in the shower.

Engine Spaces

Because Leopard is using so much of the onboard volume for accommodations, those who are new to catamarans may be surprised to discover the engine spaces are just inches away from the staterooms – and directly below the aft beds. 98

Access to much of the boat’s electrical rigging is located to inboard behind a hatch just forward of the master suite sleeping compartment. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

Aft Port Guest Stateroom

The aft guest stateroom has a berth situated in a crawl-in compartment identical to that in the master. There’s a hullside window with opening portlight built in, as well as an opening portlight aft and a hatch overhead. A pair of shelves with lipped edges run the length of the berth on the inboard side. Again, electrical outlets and USB ports would be welcome.

The guest head optimizes space and has an opening portlight for ventilation in the shower.

Available Four-Stateroom Layout

The aft port guest stateroom has similar dimensions to the sleeping compartment for the master…

The available four-stateroom layout (as seen in the layout above) has shared heads amidships in either hull, between the fore and aft staterooms, just like the port hull on the three-stateroom layout. The forward berth in the port hull is open to the forward guest double stateroom, while the starboard forward berth is for crew or a kid (or a nimble adult), and is accessible through a hatch in the foredeck. They are also useful as stowage.

Performance

…but it has some space at the foot of the bed for dressing in privacy and a hanging locker within its confines.

The Leopard 43 PC has a LOA of 42’8” (13 m), a beam of 22’1” (6.73 m), and a draft of 3’1” (0.94 m) powered with a pair of 320-hp Yanmar 8LV320 diesels matched to 21.65 x 20.27 (550 mm x 515 mm) props. With an empty weight of 30,700 lbs. (13,925 kg) and a half load of fuel, no water, 50 lbs. (23 kg) of equipment, and three people on board, our test boat had an estimated test weight of 32,097 lbs. (14,559 kg). During our test, she had a top speed of 24 knots at 3730 rpm. At 1500 rpm, she had a cruising speed of 8.3 knots and a fuel burn of 2.8 gph (10.4 lph) for a fuel economy of 3.0 nmpg (1.47 kpl) and a range of 713.7 nautical miles (1,321 km).

Engine access on the port side is beneath the berth in the aft stateroom just as in the master.

Guest Head

The guest head compartment has an opening portlight, mirrored medicine cabinet, a sink with offset faucet, a separate, glass-enclosed shower with European-style shower wand, and a manual-flush freshwater head. It is used by both portside cabins and doubles as a day head for the vessel. www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

While she has a top speed of 24 knots, she is essentially a displacement cruiser and will reward her owner with 3 nmpg at 8.3 knots.

99

Fast Cruise

This catamaran offers a range of useful speeds and some boaters may want to go a little faster to get from place to place with limited cruising time. In that case, a fast cruise of 16.7 knots at 2800 rpm had a fuel burn of 15.6 gph (58.9 lph) for a fuel economy of 1.1 nmpg (0.52 lph) and a range of 254.4 nautical miles (471 kph).

bled off a knot and a half of speed. This means that there’s no need to accelerate into the turn as many monohull drivers may be inclined. We were at a loss for rough conditions so we took her through the wake of our test boat a few times. When taking the waves on the sharp entry forward, the boat asks the driver to accelerate through the waves, rather than throttling back, and our test boat had no sneeze effect to speak of, in the conditions we created.

The sharp entry on the hulls means she is driven a little differently than a monohull – accelerating through the seas makes her handle the way she should – it’s counter intuitive.

Acceleration

From a standing stop, the boat got on plane in 4.2 seconds and went from zero to 20 mph in 6.4 seconds.

Even under hard acceleration, she maintained a near-level running attitude.

She kept her level attitude as we passed through the waves of our camera boat.

Docking

Because it’s a catamaran, the props are very far apart, so the differential thrust is extremely responsive, countering misgivings someone might have about the response to the rudders. We would not want to be spinning this wheel to try to get into a slip since it’s relatively hard to turn (this is not fingertip control) and also it requires 5.5 turns to go from lock-to-lock. Best to use the steering indicator on the Raymarine autopilot control head above the wheel on the helm dash, turn the wheel to set the rudders to straight ahead, and use the throttle and shift levers to back her down. The Leopard 43 PC is a pussycat, very easygoing and responsive to the controls.

Handling

The Leopard 43 PC is sporty in her acceleration and responsiveness to the throttle. That said, she is a bit resistant to the helm at slow speeds, until we got the water flowing past those rudders a bit. She had a flat running attitude in tight turns that may take some getting used to for monohull veterans, but it is proper and doesn’t ever give the unsteady or vulnerable feeling that it does in a monohull. We took our test boat into a tight turn at 19 knots and she made the 360 rotation in 40 seconds and only 100

Because the props are so far apart, it is much easier to dock her than a monohull. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2019

Using the throttle and shift levers, moving them into forward or reverse as needed to adjust position, and the boat is easily maneuvered into a dock.

Price

Base price is $499,000.

Some Options to Consider

• Northern Lights 9 kW genset ($30,130) • Air conditioning, two 16,000-BTU system ($16,010) • Solar panels, 70 watts each (multiple options starting at ($3,708) • Watermaker and water treatment system ($25,718) • Washer/dryer ($2,089) • Electric grill on flybridge ($1,530) • Composite teak decking on aft deck, foredeck, transom steps, and flying bridge ($15,451)

Observations

The Leopard 43 PC has shown how a design can

evolve from generation to generation, with new features that remedy problems that arose with earlier designs. The designer Alex Simonis says the interior volume of the 43 PC is 30% larger than the previous model. The oceangoing capability of this model is belied by its 264-gallon (999 L) fuel capacity, and delivery crews carry a substantial amount of extra fuel (more than the boat’s tank capacity) for deliveries from Cape Town to the Caribbean. While there are those who will say the interior is relatively sterile, we would suggest that it’s a clean canvas to better show the personality of her owner. Because the boats are primarily built for charter, the simple and robust systems should serve ownercruisers well. While it has been challenging to find dock space for a boat with a 22’1” (6.73 m) beam in the past, catamarans are considered to be a fast-growing segment globally and new marinas are being built to accommodate them.

Test Result Highlights

Top speed for the Leopard 43 PC (2018-) is 27.6 mph (44.4 kph), burning 33.0 gallons per hour (gph) or 124.9 liters per hour (lph). Best cruise for the Leopard 43 PC (2018-) is 19.2 mph (30.9 kph), and the boat gets 1.2 miles per gallon (mpg) or 0.51 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 293 miles (471.54 kilometers). Tested power is 2 x 320-hp Yanmar 8LV320. MM

Part 5 – Restaurants & Bars Are Quick to Recover

I

n 2017, hurricanes Irma and Maria dealt a huge blow to the restaurant business the BVI. Damage ranged from a few restaurants and bars escaping with just needing minor repairs to most with significant damage such as roofs being blown off to those that were in the path of tornados that the hurricane spawned and were

102

completely destroyed. Many of the restaurants were housed in buildings with wood frame construction, which was no match for the 250+ mph winds during Irma. The bad news is that while many of the damaged establishments have either completed or are in the process of repair and rebuilding, there will certainly be a sig-

nificant number that will decide to throw in the towel and remain closed permanently. In addition, most of the high end resorts and their restaurants including Peter Island Resort, Rosewood Little Dix Bay and The Bitter End Yacht Club will remain closed until the end of 2019 or early 2020. The good news is that, since the end of 2017, the BVI has made significant progress in repairing and reopening restaurants and bars for locals and visitors alike. According to BVI Traveller’s database of BVI Restaurants & Bars, as of July, 2018 approximately 123 were open for business and while 32 remain closed. The restaurant business was able to get back on its feet quickly as many of the establishments could be reopened temporarily under a tent or makeshift structure until more permanent repairs could be made. Such was the case with the BananaKeet Café and Myett’s on Tortola, Sidney’s Peace and Love on Jost Van Dyke, The Wonky Dog on Anegada and many others.

In addition, the fact that close to 80% of the business were open by July makes the restaurant industry the fastest recovering sector in the territory!

More Restaurants Reopen for the New Year

Looking forward to the 2019 tourist season, BVI Traveller has reported on an additional 10 establishments that have reopened with more to come. Those include wellknown places such as Foxy’s Taboo on Jost Van Dyke plus Brandywine Estate Restaurant and Quito’s Gazebo on Tortola. All in all, the restaurants and bars sector has made significant progress, and is leading the way in the overall recovery in the BVI. It’s all about knowing when 1999 Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, Certitude. This particular Bahia has been owned by its current owner for over 10 years and has spent its time cruising the Caribbean Islands, in that time the owner has made modifications over and above a standard Bahia that make sailing and living aboard easier and more comfortable. Its three electric winches make light work many of the jobs on deck including the sails. It has a large custom 11 CU freezer in the galley provides impressive frozen storage. Extra house batteries give ample power storage, and two large solar panels and two wind generators keep up with most power demand onboard. The vessel has two power inverters fitted to help keep the power usage on board efficient, a smaller one handles low demand items such as keeping phones and computers charged, and a larger one for the higher power demand items such as toasters, coffee makers or hair dryers and can be turned on as needed. A Northern Lights generator located in the port engine compartment provides air conditioning via three air conditioning units and also provides battery charging. Four Bilge pumps with alarms keep you notified of any water in the bilge and the system also indicates which pump has activated. The crew bunk beds in the port and starboard companion-way have been converted into useful storage and also accommodate the water maker. The current owner has converted the Starboard forward cabin to a workshop and storage, which is very useful if you plan to live aboard but could also be converted back into a cabin if the new owners prefer to have a fourth Cabin. The hull is okoume marine plywood totally encapsulated with fiberglass and epoxy resin. The deck and bulkheads are ply/foam/ply sandwich and also encapsulated with glass and epoxy. The smallest of the Lagoon range, the amazing 380 holds the record for the largest number of cruising catamarans built worldwide now over 800. This used Catamaran is easy to handle and can comfortably be sailed by one person. Halyards and almost all lines coming back to the helm making sail trimming and handling a breeze. The 380 is very comfortable both at sea and at anchor and most of all is fun to live aboard. This 4-cabin version offers two shared heads and maximizes accommodation.
