THE IMPORTANCE OF CERTIFICATION IN WORKWEAR

Australian and New Zealand standards created to regulate workwear, are developed by joint technical committees consisting of representatives from relevant organisations, including Australian/New Zealand government bodies, universities, and technical specialists like the CSIRO.

These standards are approved by the Council of Standards Australia and are what a global independent Notified Body (NB) such as BSI Group use as the basis of product certification.

Australian and New Zealand standards align with European and other international standards but differ on some performance requirements. Workwear standards include but are not limited to the following:

AS/NZS 1906.4:2010

Retroreflective materials and devices for road traffic control purposes - Part 4: High-visibility materials for safety garments.

AS/NZS 4602.1:2011

High-visibility safety garments - Part 1: Garments for high-risk applications.

ASTM F1959/F1959M (NFPA 70E)

Test method for determining the arc rating of materials for clothing.

Products in Australia only require to comply with the above standards. Compliance with a safety standard is simply a claim without verification. Simple compliance is unacceptable for TRu Workwear and Bool Workwear. Certification of products by an independent Notified Body (NB) ensures the product indisputably meets safety claims. This validation by the NB is vital for ensuring the protection levels are accurate.

In Europe, certification to the latest workwear standards is mandatory – in Australia, it is not.

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right garments to keep you dry and protected during winter. If you are exposed to rain or chilling winds, Heatleys has a wide range of workwear designed for all conditions whilst also assuring breathability and comfort. But how do you know what garment is best for you?

WATER HYDROSTATIC RATING

Wet weather clothing usually has a rating, measured in millimeters using a hydrostatic head, that determines how waterproof a garment is. It can vary from the manufacturer, fabric and technology used as there is no universal base of measurement. The hydrostatic head is the measurement device used by filling a small, cylindrical tube with water and positioning it vertically above the material being tested, this then calculates how much water pressure a

waterproof material can take before it leaks through the garment.

Choosing the right workwear depends on the type of environment you work in. As a rule of thumb, the higher your activity level, the greater your need for breathability. If you are doing little more than standing around in the rain, then a raincoat with water-repellent (but not waterproof) properties will suffice and high breathability isn’t as important. However, if you are an outdoor worker and are exerting yourself in cold weather conditions, then having lightweight, waterproof breathable garments will keep you comfortable, dry and allow for ease of movement.

Each rating is designed to address specific types of conditions. The guide below outlines the different waterproof ratings and the types of conditions they would be best suited to.

Light rain, dry snow, no pressure. No resistance to little resistance to moisture.

Light rain, average snow, light pressure. Rainproof and waterproof under light pressure.

Moderate rain, average snow, light pressure. Rainproof and waterproof except under high pressure.

Heavy rain, wet snow, some pressure. Rainproof and waterproof under high pressure.

Heavy rain, wet snow, high pressure. Rainproof and waterproof under very high pressure.
